FROM THE ARCHIVES Celebrating AH&L’s 40th anniversary year
celebrations
40 YEARS, AND WOW, have we been through a lot together since our first issue was published in 1983. Recessions, royal weddings, the introduction of the World Wide Web and a global pandemic. There were the ’96 Olympics that established Atlanta as a fast-paced, modern city, and rapid population growth with booming city development following suit. Despite the changes we have experienced throughout the last 40 years, one thing remains the same: Atlantans’ devotion to home. From family heirlooms and customized linens to embracing bright colors, punchy patterns, story-filled antiques and more, our homes offer guests a glimpse of who we are and what we love. In this special anniversary issue, we’re celebrating the very style that has kept Atlanta at the top of the design market. Style Editor Clinton Smith talks design trends that have stood the test of time (page 10), while Assistant Editor Evan Edwards revisits a handful of AH&L’s best dressed

dining rooms before the summer entertaining season kicks off (page 18). Also inside: Three projects from a pool of Atlanta’s A-List professionals—Suzanne Kasler, Spitzmiller & Norris and Carson McElheney Landscape Architecture & Design (page 50); Melanie Millner and Matt Brownlow (page 72); Chris Holt, Norman Askins and Richard Anderson (page 86)—epitomize sophistication, understated elegance and architectural significance, all serving as a poster child for gracious living. As we carry the torch into another decade, the AH&L team would like to thank those who have helped usher us into this milestone year: The designers, architects and other professionals who continuously push the and staple Atlanta retailers that support our community’s collective effort to live beautifully; the writers, editors, art directors, photographers, stylists and advertisers that bring life to our pages; and the house-loving readers who have loyally stuck with us through the decades. Cheers! Lauren Iverson, Editor-in-Chief

CLASSIC CHIC
NEWS
A forever favorite, blue-and-white palettes are a touchstone of Atlanta design, and are at home in every room of the house. And why not? They’re soothing, comforting, familiar and always in style. Here, LAUREN DELOACH painted a breakfast nook’s shiplap walls a muted shade of blue, then adorned its built-ins with an array of antique creamware for a pop of contrast.
Setting the Scene Handpainted wallcoverings are a staple in some of the city’s most beautiful homes. From hunt-country scenes, to chinoiserie designs to garden-inspired patterns, there is no shortage of style inspiration. Inside a powder room, MELANIE MILLNER used a Cowtan & Tout scenic wallpaper as a quiet backdrop.

PATTERN PLAY Hanging plates on the wall is a decorating staple for many designers. From plain stoneware to fanciful fine china, the plates allow one to create intriguing and unique patterns, and they give a wall added depth and dimension. For example, in a guest bedroom by JACKYE LANHAM, brown pottery plates from Lanham’s personal collection create a layered, inviting respite.

GOING GREEN Atlanta has long been known as the city in a forest, and residents take great pride in their lawns and gardens. From Ansley Park to Buckhead and beyond, sweeping lawns, manicured boxwoods and bodacious blooms—shown at right in a garden by JEREMY SMEARMAN of PLANTERS INC.—are an intrinsic part of our landscape DNA.
A good night’s sleep is worth its weight in gold, and so is a personal retreat in which to escape. A great mattress, crisp linens, a proper reading light and a nightstand with storage are key components in making a space of one’s own, exemplified at left in a tranquil primary bedroom by NINA NASH LONG and DON EASTERLING. 12

OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING With outdoor spaces now being furnished at the same level of quality as their interior counterparts, dining al fresco is one of the true gifts of Atlanta hospitality. Thanks to a temperate climate—and outdoor heaters in winter!—we can host guests outdoors almost year-round. For this dinner party, SUZANNE KASLER used arrangements of sweet peas, lavender and purple heather to set the scene for a summery affair.
Bright Idea
Starburst mirrors have long been a decorating stalwart for Atlanta designers, including BETTY BURGESS, who used one in a serene bedroom shown at left. Big or small, concave or convex, they are a no-fail design choice that can be a room’s focal point or just a subtle addition.
ATLANTA TO the world
We all know that Atlanta design and hospitality knows no bounds, as evidenced by ANN HUFF and MEG HARRINGTON who just opened a spin-off of their Atlanta store, Huff Harrington, in Paris, the City of Light! No doubt the Francophiles and design gurus will be mixing the best of Southern style and grace with fabulous French flair. 13

A 1920s home with ties to architect Neel Reid has been documented in the pages of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles on three separate occasions. First published in 2009, and then once again in 2013, Atlanta design firm MARGAUX INTERIORS LIMITED was responsible for the home’s well-outfitted interiors on both occasions. Following suit, designer CLARY BOSBYSHELL (formerly with Margaux Interiors Limited) led the home’s third iteration in 2018.

ART SMART Classic or contemporary, art is integral in any Atlanta home, and the city is lucky to have no shortage of fabulous galleries that feature top-caliber artwork to suit every taste. DRESSING UP
NEWS
Over the past 40 years, one thing is for sure: Back-of-house spaces have gone from being purely utilitarian to sumptuous and extra special. Case in point: primary closets. Once outfitted with simple storage solutions, the spaces have grown into glamorous—and expansive— his-and-her personal oases in which to retreat. For example, inside a primary her-closet, the designers of SOURCE used floor-to-ceiling tinted glass doors to keep couture in view while built-in drawers, cubbies and shelves maximize organization in style.

Whether you’re looking for an overflowing European-inflected arrangement or something with simpler farm-to-table flair—such as in the below arrangement by floral designer KEITH ROBINSON—there’s no shortage of design talent to execute any wish.
Passion Projects Whether it’s a focus on a single object or interest in any array of cultural pursuits, collecting is a favorite pastime, and how those collections get displayed is an art form in itself. Luckily, local design talent—including MICHEL BOYD, who filled a gallery wall with contemporary art and antique portraiture—always knows how to show off coveted pieces. 15

FOR THE LOVE OF PETS Over the past 40 years of publication, pets have always been integral to the magazine’s mission—they offer another window into how people live. And, after all, what brings a house to life more than a pampered canine or feline? This handsome pooch poses for a photo op inside an entryway by PETER BLOCK and JOEL KELLY.
UP IN THE AIR
Perhaps one of the biggest changes that Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles has witnessed over the last four decades is the proliferation of high-rise living. Not only have the buildings changed the city’s skyline, but the luxurious amenities they offer are often on par with your favorite resort hotel. Inside this Buckhead high-rise, BARBARA WESTBROOK took a dining room to new heights with an intriguing blend of textures and styles.
As much as Atlantans love their homes, they also like to get away! From the Carolina mountains to 30A in Florida to Georgia’s Golden Isles, vacation houses in resort, rural and coastal communities have been integral to the magazine since its beginning in 1983. At right, a boat house by FRANCES ZOOK and CAROLYN MALONE offers a scenic, stylish gathering spot on Lake Burton. 16

30A Debut Written and Produced by JENNIFER BOLES
If the combined talent and experience of its design-build team is anything to go by, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ inaugural 30A SHOWHOUSE is destined to wow both visitors and potential homeowners when it opens this month. “We spend a lot of time on second homes down on 30A and have created some great designs. This showhouse can help visitors envision themselves vacationing or
owning a luxury home here,” says designer MELANIE TURNER of MELANIE TURNER INTERIORS, who worked with BENECKI HOMES, LEW OLIVER, INC., SOURCE, and CHASE GREEN BUILT to craft the newly built house that fully embraces the carefree 30A lifestyle. Located on Elysee Court in the Santimo development, a neighborhood which is situated between Rosemary Beach and Alys Beach, the showhouse makes the most of its seaside surroundings thanks to its clever vertical layout. An architectural blend of classicism and modernism with Deco and Aegean-style influences, the white stucco house is notable for its height with outdoor living spaces that take advantage of the home’s coastal views and breezes. An elevated pool and poolside bar are situated on the home’s second level, while the fourth level boasts a space for lounging and TV watching that is enclosed by a wraparound terrace, creating a rooftop conservatory effect. There is even a lookout deck on the roof from which one can fully appreciate sunsets and starry skies. As far as its interiors go, the five-bedroom house is warm, sophisticated and, according to Turner, unexpected. “It’s not your typical beach design. It’s romantic, happy and cultivated.” And, with the added benefit of abundant storage, a four-car garage and even a miniature golf course, it seems that the house has something for everybody. 30Ashowhouse.com
ATLANTA: THEN & NOW Over the last four decades, Atlanta’s landscape has changed dramatically, from an increasingly dense skyline—40 years ago, skyscrapers were mostly concentrated in the downtown business district, while today, they make their presence known throughout the city—to a continuously growing geographical footprint. One longtime Atlantan who can attest to these changes is powerhouse real estate agent GLENNIS BEACHAM of BEACHAM & COMPANY, REALTORS, who has been selling real estate in the Metro area since 1982. “The Metro area has grown dramatically, with both population growth and land mass expansion leading to major development in the suburbs,” says Beacham, noting that now booming Forsyth County was not even considered part of the Metro area 40 years ago. Within the city limits, Beacham says that neighborhoods such as Midtown, Virginia-Highland, Morningside, Buckhead and the West Side have likewise experienced tremendous growth over the past 40 years. “Those neighborhoods located within the city of Atlanta have become increasingly popular among younger buyers. They are, however, expensive and beyond the reach of many. Today, 26

Naomi Von Habersham ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES MAKES turning 40 look so easy. When I hit that milestone birthday many moons ago, it wasn’t pretty. Gravity began to take its toll almost immediately, and wrinkles and gray hairs seemed to appear practically overnight. Not so with this magazine. In fact, I would argue that at 40 years old, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles has never looked better. Over the decades, the editors who have helmed the magazine have managed to stay on top of the myriad design trends that have come and gone, starting with the jewel-tone colors that were the rage when this magazine was born. That’s not to say there wasn’t great design in Atlanta during the 1980s. There was, and the magazine was there to cover it, although back then, it went by a different name: Southern Homes. Back in the 1980s and ’90s, people living both inside and outside of the South often assumed that Southern design was almost entirely traditional, but thanks to this magazine’s coverage of the Atlanta design scene, they learned that it was so much more than that. Midcentury modern, contemporary, transitional and traditional interiors have graced these pages through the years, as have single-family homes, lofts, high-rise condominiums and grand old estates. I think that’s one of the things at which this magazine excels—covering a wide range of styles and homes that are located throughout the city and in communities beyond the city limits. Likewise, if it wasn’t for this magazine, many readers might not have had the opportunity to view the work of the many designers who have called Atlanta home over the years. Actually, that might be what I appreciate most about this magazine. Few have championed our local and regional design talent as passionately and enthusiastically as Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, and I can’t help but wonder if we would have the vibrant design community that we do without that coverage and support. So, to everyone who has worked to make this magazine the must-have read that it remains today, thank you for these last 40 years—and here’s to 40 more!
Atlanta History Center is proud to present an exhibition on the life and work of one of America’s most influential interior designers, Ruby Ross Wood, whose work was characterized by eclectic combinations of furniture, bold color, and impeccable taste.

HUSBAND-AND-WIFE DUO Linton and Gina Hopkins, co-founders of hospitality group Hopkins and Company, have reintroduced the new rendition of their legendary restaurant Holeman & Finch Public House to Colony Square. Open for lunch and dinner, this establishment is a must-visit for all Atlantans and out-oftowners alike. “Warmth and deliciousness are our jam at Holeman & Finch. I want our guests to feel like they are in a place that welcomes them before they even walk in the door,” says Chef Hopkins. An assortment of shareable fare occupies the dinner menu, like their indulgent pimento cheese and the Sapelo clams with bacon, bourbon, jalapeño and toasted levain. The menu also offers a wide selection of meats and cheeses to build your own 30
charcuterie board. Among the selection of main plates is Hopkins’ famous cheeseburger as well as delectable options such as a snapper meunière and a skillet beefsteak. “Many of the dishes at Holeman & Finch are inspired by the original location, but we are always weaving in new stories,” says Chef Hopkins. “We have a full oyster and shellfish bar and are featuring a traditional Sunday roast each weekend. Regardless of the time of day, we celebrate from-scratch, whole-animal and whole-vegetable cookery.” Designed by Gina, daughter Avery Hopkins and Katelyn Belson, thoughtful furnishings inhabit Holeman & Finch’s interior. “We used our love for cozy British pubs and our connectivity to the art district in Midtown as a starting point,” says Gina. “The three of us

With a cozy patio, flavor-filled fare and family-style serving, Inman Park’s DELBAR quickly rose to the top of my list since its opening in May 2020. My must-haves while dining: the Dill Labneh (strained yogurt) and Kashk Bademjoon (fried eggplant) spreads, the prime beef sirloin with the Sabzi Polo rice and any of their spice-infused craft cocktails. Cheers! delbaratl.com —Lauren Iverson, Editor-in-Chief You can never go wrong with dinner at KING + DUKE. Situated in the heart of Buckhead, this classicmeets-contemporary restaurant features a 24-foot open hearth and an American literature-inspired theme. The menu is seasonal and locally sourced, but one thing that remains a fixture are the white cheddar popovers—my favorite! The perfect spot to unwind after a week at the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles office. kinganddukeatl.com —Lindsey Wohlfrom, Art Director My go-to spot to bring friends from out of town is RUBY CHOW’S. Situated on the corner of North Avenue and Glen Iris Drive and illuminated by a retro-style sign, the Asian-fusion restaurant is a brisk walk from my apartment. share a similar sensibility and we each brought ideas to the design.” A variety of art pieces and memorabilia from the Hopkins family collection, Scott Antique Markets, 1stDibs, Chairish and more reside in every dining nook. “For the booths, I have to give Chef Hopkins all the credit,” says Gina. “Having those special nooks was his idea and became the canvas for the overall design.” The team also worked with cabinetmakers to create the furniture and millwork, and the zinc bars—ideal for happy hour—were custom-made in Savannah. With an alluring environment to match, Holeman & Finch is the new city hangout for an enticing meal and cocktail. Says Chef Hopkins, “The idea of a public house is to come as you are without too much fuss. Meet a friend, grab a drink, stay for a short time or stay for a long time.” holeman-finch.com

WHEN A YOUNG DESIGN-MINDED couple with three children and a golden retriever first purchased this home on a sought-after street in Buckhead, they knew they needed just the right design team to reimagine it for a new era. Designed by interior designer Suzanne Kasler along with architects Rick Spitzmiller and Robert Norris, who first renovated this early 1920s-era brick Italianatestyle home two decades ago, the team got started on translating the homeowner’s love for classic interiors in a fresh, youthful way. In pursuit of warmth, the architects had the stark white exterior painted in a warmer shade punctuated by black window shutters. They also swapped out the steel front door with a wooden one and replaced the clear kitchen windows with paned—just a few of their many subtle yet impactful changes. “We pulled the house together and made it more cohesive inside and out,” says Norris. “There’s a classical basis, but it’s also timeless,” says Spitzmiller. Painted in a vibrant color by Fine Paints of Europe (S1515Y8OR), the glam bar hidden behind a door juxtaposes the light walls in the main living areas.
Architecture & Design enhances that timeless quality. Among their many changes, the firm incorporated large boxwoods alongside flowering plants such as oakleaf hydrangea and azaleas. “We only wanted to use green and white plantings,” says the firm’s CEO Kaitlyn Peake. “It’s showstopping but in a modest way.” The interior likewise radiates a quiet elegance. Tailored draperies, for example, call attention to the height of the tall windows in the formal living room, where blue velvet
accent chairs add a hint of color to a soothing area of sumptuous fabrics rendered in neutral hues. The palette flows into the kitchen, which is outfitted with a mix of oak and painted cabinetry accented by light marble countertops and brass hardware. A white metal hood adds a bespoke touch. “Even in a house with a classic or traditional foundation, you can push the envelope,” says Kasler. “This house has more than one note.” The lighting exemplifies her assertion: Pendants 57

with large fabric drum shades soften the linear architecture in the kitchen. And a vintage chandelier with a trio of metal shades adds another dimension to the adjacent breakfast room, where a set of curvaceous, modern upholstered chairs by Saarinen surround a white Tulip table. “The light fixtures are special elements,” says Kasler. “The clients loved that.” The dining room chandelier is one of their favorites. Its constellation of smoked glass globes appears to float above a wooden pedestal table that is surrounded by iconic Platner chairs with Venetian silk velvet upholstery. An embroidered patterned wallcovering adds to the sense of romance. “In a house with a quiet elegance, wallcoverings give you a chance to have your own personality,” says Kasler.
“It’s a great way to create a strong point of view.” Indeed, a handpainted Gracie Studio wallcovering in pale blue and white hues creates an equally magical backdrop for the neutral furnishings in the wife’s office, which has tall arched windows overlooking the lush landscaping. And while its impact is subtle, the neutral fabric wallcovering in the primary bedroom establishes a sense of warmth that is reflected in the plush furnishings. No strangers to renovations, the owners took the pandemic-related supply chain issues in stride. That said, they were overjoyed when they could finally relax in their newly renovated home. “It’s beautiful and chic, but it lives very comfortably,” says Kasler. “They love it.” See Resources, Back of Book

DESIGNATED TASK AREAS such as gift wrap rooms and home offices in a floor plan are a luxury—if they are utilized and enjoyed. But, if they aren’t needed, they become nothing more than awkward storage closets. Such was the case when a family with two young boys moved into their Northwest Atlanta home built in 2010. Working with Matt Brownlow of Brownlow & Sons, designers Melanie Millner and Katie Moorhouse of The Design Atelier renovated the kitchen, ancillary rooms and upgraded finishes throughout to make the home live large for its new owners. “There was plenty of room for everything they wanted, but they asked us to update and customize
MelanieMillner.indd 77
the kitchen and rework the adjacent spaces to suit their specific needs,” says Moorhouse. In the kitchen, the duo relocated appliances and moved door openings to improve function and flow. New custom cabinets offer a clean, classic look while providing storage and specialized compartments—including a full coffee station with water supply and lighted display cabinet. “The homeowner is very well-organized, so the kitchen had to be extremely efficient,” says Marcel Olariu, cabinet designer and principal of Kingdom Woodworks. “Everything down to the silverware, coffee cups and small appliances was accounted for in the design.” The gift wrap room and a small

office combined to create a larger home office and mudroom—something better suited to a family with little boys. After restructuring the workrooms, Millner and Moorhouse turned to furnishing the home’s empty spaces. “This house was bigger than their former home. They didn’t have furniture for the living and dining room, and everything was painted white. It was pretty much a blank slate,” says Moorhouse. “This is a fun, vibrant family, and the design needed to reflect their personality.” Channeling the family’s youthful energy, the designers looked to the cheery hues in their client’s Oushak rug as a starting point. In the living room, neutral upholstery is enlivened with blue trim, while blue draperies, table lamps and an upholstered slipper chair repeat the summery hue. The Michelle Armas painting above the mantel, along with accent pillows and painted bookcase walls, cue the rug’s pinks and corals. For the dining room, they leaned into a 79

cherry blossom print that the client had long adored—a grasscloth featuring pink spring blooms and ruby-throated hummingbirds on a metallic charcoal background. Green velvet upholstery on side chairs and green trim on draperies underscores the birds’ feathers, while a gilt chandelier with decorative leaves repeats the floral motif. Throughout the project, balancing light and dark finishes and playing soft contemporary lines off of traditional styles was just as essential as the use of color and pattern in the new design. “For visual interest, it’s important to mix things up,” says Moorhouse. “It’s like a puzzle. We didn’t want it to look like we threw a bunch of brand-new furniture into the house all at once.” The end result: a tailor-made home perfectly suited for the new family. “We started by making sure the house functioned right and then layered in all of the pretty things,” says Millner. “We were lucky to have a really great team to help bring it to life.” See Resources, Back of Book

MORE THAN TWO DECADES after their first collaboration, a cosmopolitan couple asked architect Norman Askins to revitalize their new Buckhead home. The owners envisioned a fresh, updated milieu that would befit their collections of contemporary art, antique porcelain and African artifacts. “All good things work together,” says Askins. “Nothing makes a house better than a good collection.” Simply painting the dated orangeish brick and framing a pair of unornamented first-floor windows with trellises instantly transformed the exterior. Inside, Askins and project architect Daniel Witt raised and widened the doorway to create a more open, flowing floor plan. They also enhanced the millwork throughout, reconfigured awkward spaces and added a new first-floor primary suite addition.

In the front foyer, for example, black double doors adorned with a series of Hollywood Regency-inspired concentric square moldings disguise a posh bar with complementary cabinetry and a mirrored backsplash. “We didn’t do anything very radical, but a lot of small changes made a huge impact,” says Askins. Mirroring the transom between the living room and library, for example, adds architectural interest while reflecting natural daylight. Meanwhile, interior designer Chris Holt enlivened the interior with the sort of vibrant colors and boisterous patterns that

his clients so adored. Visually stimulating ikats, dragon and geometric fabrics in coordinating shades of blue brighten the white walls in the salon-style formal living room. And he painted the walls, ceiling, millwork and shelving in the adjacent library in a complementary shade of blue. “The color palette threads throughout the house, so everything is in harmony,” says Holt. While most of the walls are white, the designer covered the walls in the kitchen and adjacent den with a neutral grasscloth that highlights the white cabinetry and quartzite countertops.
