ONE OF MY SAVING GRACES for the last few months has been the on-point memes that have been circulating through group texts, e-mails and Instagram. As our homes have become the setting for nearly every occasion for the past few weeks, from Zoom meetings to driveway dates, it’s strangely comforting to find humor in what has become the collective “everyday.” Another diversion we’ve found rewarding is planning what our everyday will look like down the line—when we can meet with a design-build team, draw plans to renovate our kitchen and back porch, and add a sport court to our rear landscape— a time where we can genuinely prepare to entertain again, and not just hunker down. WHEN HIS CLIENTS built a vacation retreat beside a placid lake, architect Scott West made it his mission to create a soothing space where the couple could experience more than a moment of zen. “The goal of the bath—as with the rest of the house—was to find a modern design language that felt appropriate for the rural context,” says West. “I wanted to embrace a certain rusticity, organicness and warmth in the materials—a crisp ‘wabi-sabi’ with subtle natural tones and patterns.” Case in point: in order to balance West’s desire for plenty of natural light with his client’s need for privacy, the designer incorporated a series of clerestory windows to achieve both. From there, he layered in a mix of natural elements—wood-like tile floors and custom vanities fabricated by George Peker’s Addhouse topped with Walker Zanger’s White 18

Macaubus—along with man-made materials in earthy tones, such as the chevron tile wrapping the fireplace and planks of porcelain tiles surrounding the sunken bath and in the shower. West’s goal of achieving “visual serenity” for the space is no more apparent than in the large, recessed rain shower. “I tend to keep things simple and not overcomplicate with a dozen different controls and heads,” he says. Instead of flooding the space with excessive accessories and gadgetry, he kept it clean, adding only a “boulder” seat that the homeowners found at a local landscape shop. “In retrospect, I think the browner tones of the rock make for an interesting counterpoint,” he says. It’s a great example of where collaboration with clients produces more interesting results.” In these uncertain times, the master bath offers just the right amount of quiet and beauty. Says West, “The world is a complicated, overstimulating place, so I think a respite such as a bathing space should offer calming serenity.” 20

SENSORY SANCTUARY 2020 Bath of the Year award winner LORRAINE ENWRIGHT brings natural elements to life in a quiet retreat for two busy homeowners Written by LAUREN IVERSON Photographed by JEFF HERR

NESTLED AMONG THE TREES in the Old Ivy neighborhood of Buckhead, a soothing, thoughtfully compact master retreat by designer Lorraine Enwright beckons. The homeowners, who are both physicians, craved stillness—a respite from the chaos of their hectic careers. “They wanted this space to be quiet,” says Enwright. “Every sense, from what they touched to the sounds of the water that came out of the faucet, had to be soothing.” A Japanese soaking tub, custom made by builder Chris Donnelly of Brookside Custom Homes, serves as the focal point of the bathroom—and was also one of the larger challenges encountered by the design duo. “The homeowners wanted a tub, but we didn’t really have the space to include a standard-size one and the amenities that typically go with it,” says Enwright. “We had to dig the soaking tub much deeper than the floor you walk on, and when you’re sitting in it, the water comes up to about the shoulders.” To uphold the zen environment without sacrificing function, special attention had to be given from corner to corner. For example, the 22

deck of the soaking tub doubles as a bench for the shower, while a custom cabinet hiding behind the vanity mirror conceals 24 inches of storage space for toiletries. The richness of the walnut vanity wraps the mostly cool-toned bathroom in a blanket of warmth, but it also offers dedicated space for a laundry bin. A few steps over, the sliding walnut barn door leads to a water closet. “Every functional detail should also be beautiful,” explained Enwright. And those details were not lost on Enwright. Integrated sinks are sloped to minimize water splashing and to contribute to the soothing sensory experience. As for the jewelry of the room, iridescent glazed tile melts together the floor, walls and tub—its specks of gold and silver reflecting sunlight. Says Enwright, “The sun hits and everything sparkles.”

When your wheels-up clients have experienced the best of everything during their travels to just about everywhere, how do you create an equally enchanting spot for them to land? If you’re interior designer James Wheeler, you bring all the glamour and serenity found in international luxury hotels and spas to a master bathroom retreat. “My design intention was to create a timeless oasis infused with both masculine and feminine elements,” says Wheeler. “The property sits on a pastoral landscape, and I wanted to capture as much of the view as possible to add to that feeling of an oasis.” But this is no garden-variety bathroom. The homeowners demanded some sparkle, and Wheeler more than delivered. He started with a classic black-and-white palette and added plenty of shimmer and shine via the three-tier, antiquebrass-and-acrylic chandelier, a host of antiqued mirror and polished-nickel accents and a showstopper of a stainless

steel soaking tub. “The tub changes from a sparkling silver to an almost black matte finish as the light moves through the space,” says Wheeler. “It functions like a mirror, reflecting the custom tile mosaic ‘rug’ that lays just in front of it.” No less dramatic is the huge (18-by-7-foot!) shower, awash in dolomite marble on the walls and in the custom herringbone pattern on the floor and ceiling. But this is more than just a pretty space: It’s equipped with two separate showerheads and a total of six high-power jet sprays that can be positioned in any direction, along with two steam generators and heated floors. The perfectly peaceful spot is the embodiment of Wheeler’s philosophy when it comes to creating ageless design. “Marble has been around for centuries and stands the test of time, as the sculpture collections in any museum will attest,” he says. “And when in doubt, always go white.” 27

Designer KAREN FERGUSON centered mind, body and spirit in this joint bathroom-yoga studio Written by LAUREN IVERSON Photographed by MAX KIM-BEE MINDFUL WAS THE WORD that kept coming up when designer Karen Ferguson of Harrison Design was asked to craft a holistic retreat for a Buckhead family. The homeowners, who desired a space that included both a bathroom and a yoga studio, wanted an escape for when they were in need of recentering, both physically and mentally. “They have stressful jobs, so it was really important for this spa to make them feel like they had walked into a whole different world,” says Ferguson. Starting with a blank slate, Ferguson employed materials that are calm and connected to nature. Floor-to-ceiling Galala honed limestone walls are a smooth backdrop for oil-rubbed bronze finishes and cypress paneling, which is seen both on the ceiling in the bathroom and on the walls in the yoga studio. Special amenities, such as antimicrobial flooring in the yoga studio and a sauna, which sits in the corner of the room by the bathroom entry, elevate the environment. “It was all about the experience and how the space

flowed together,” says Ferguson. “The sauna is great for detox after a yoga session, then, a cool steam shower after the sauna is always an absolute luxury.” Because the homeowners have traveled the world, it was only natural to infuse the holistic retreat with exotic antiques that echo faraway lands. Wooden Egyptian heads sit stately at the top of the legs on an Italian Egyptian Revival-style antique étagère. Above, light from a Persian lantern glimmers against the mother-of-pearl, horn and bead detailing in a Syrian antique mirror. “Elevating a quiet room with antiques is truly a form of escapism,” explains Ferguson. “It’s nurturing, it’s unique. It makes homeowners feel more cared for.” And thanks to the clever use of those antiques and natural materials, the euphoric sensation the homeowners craved is inevitable when inside the space, according to Ferguson. “Reality truly doesn’t exist once you enter.”

THESE HOMEOWNERS started with a straightforward design request to designer Melanie Turner. “They wanted a calming bathroom with a double vanity for guests to relax in while getting ready in their Alys Beach, Florida home,” says Turner, who has worked on eight homes in the tony coastal community. Once Turner, architect Domin Bock and Alys Beach Construction had the layout and functionalities of the new construction home’s bathroom in place, the owners tapped into Turner’s creativity by asking her to pay homage to a Moroccan riad. Turner obliged with a breezy all-white palette, specifying hardware-free cabinetry by Karpaty; a crisp yet plush window seat made out of indoor/outdoor Donghia fabric; and a few strategic touches of Moroccan exoticism like the angular brass mirror. “It worked with the unusually placed window,” notes Turner, who matched the mirror’s finish with the Kohler sink fixtures, brass door hardware from Source, and accessorized the counter with a brass crab found in Bali. Last, but certainly not least, no true Moroccan riad homage could be complete without a statement-making tile. Turner toned down the typical brightly colored Moroccan tile with a neutral-and-putty colored floor selection to maintain the space’s overall serene spirit. 38

IT’S NO SECRET that 2020 has brought unprecedented changes to our world. Even with the challenges, our housing market insiders see a bright future. “We’re open for business,” says AMY BUBES of HARRY NORMAN, REALTORS. “The market is very robust and people are still moving. They want to take advantage of low interest rates, which are a driving factor. explains ROBERT NORRIS, executive vice president of architecture firm SPITZMILLER & NORRIS, adding that clients also value safe rooms for storms and modern sculleries for bulk storage. Similarly, AL KELEKCI, president of HASK CUSTOM HOMES, is noticing an uptick in demand for recreational environments like pools, screened porches, gyms and outdoor spaces. Technology has allowed businesses to thrive, even without the possibility of face-to-face meetings with clients and vendors. “For the past four years, we have been using an internet portal where our clients can log in anytime to get updated information,” says Kelekci of the real-time access to job logs, photos, selections, schedule and project financials. Norris’ firm is likewise accustomed to working on projects outside of Atlanta (as far afield as Costa Rica), so it’s been a seamless transition to connecting with local clients online. “We have many ways of communicating, whether it’s FaceTime, Zoom, conference calling, emails, text messages—you name it,” says the architect. As for the future of caravans and open houses this summer? Only time will tell. “It’s a wait-and-see kind of thing,” says Bubes. “I think moving forward, it’s going to be a little bit different for all of us.”

ARTIST TODD MURPHY’S DEATH in Brooklyn at 57 from cancer left behind his wife Liane, five children and a devastated design community. Murphy’s iconic artwork, combining painting and photography, could be found in an array of prominent area homes, notable Atlanta restaurants like Himitsu and Two Urban Licks and in the personal spaces of top Atlanta tastemakers. Designer Melanie Turner and her husband, developer Stan Benecki, knew Murphy for 20-plus years and count more than 30 of Murphy’s works in their personal collection.

“He was bigger than life. Everyone loved Todd,” says Benecki, testifying to Murphy’s ability to create not only emotionally resonant work but also his talent for connecting deeply with other people. “His study and love of art was only superseded by his study and love of people,” notes Murphy’s twin sister Gina Solomon. “There was a sense of timelessness to all he created,” says Solomon who saw a reverence for life, for the natural world, for science and for spirituality in her brother’s work. Murphy’s images of kingfishers and lions, hummingbirds and deer had a metaphysical quality that spoke to both art world insiders and new collectors. Steeped in theatricality, Murphy’s artworks shaped the spaces where they resided with their very presence. That quality made him especially beloved by Atlanta designers who saw how his work could lend gravitas to a room. Turner and Benecki found Murphy’s work uniquely compelling when placed in homes where his artworks’ innate drama and grandeur spoke to a variety of people, often with very different tastes. “He elevated the spaces,” says Turner of how Murphy’s art could impact a room. In a certain project of the couple’s, Turner attests, “It sold because of Todd’s pieces.” Benecki sees Murphy’s legacy in Atlanta as akin to architects like Neel Reid or Philip T. Shutze who have become part of the city’s culture. “His art is both elegant and disruptive,” says designer Kelly Anthony of Wolf Design Group, who not only owns Murphy’s works, but has selected them for many clients’ homes as well. For Anthony, that delicate balance was what made his body of work speak to so many different Atlantans—and firmly aligned him with the city’s identity. Says Anthony, “He started in Atlanta and his legacy will always remain in Atlanta.”

If you were a mature woman, you were advised to forgo wearing pink lest you appear as though you were trying too hard to look young. If you had blue eyes, you were told that brown was the only shade of eye makeup for you. And once upon a time, painting your bedroom red was a big decorating no-no, because the vibrant shade was considered the enemy of sleep. Thank goodness times have changed and people are flouting the rules, because if there was ever a time to surround yourself with your favorite colors, now is it. Over the last couple of months, certain hues have helped to give me a sense of security, comfort and even moments of joy. To some, blue is standoffish and cold, but not to me. The living room that has been my safe haven for so many weeks now is decorated almost entirely in shades of blue, which in turn are warmed by glints of gold and antique brass. At night, when awash in lamplight, my blue living room feels like a comforting hug, which is just what I need right now. But when I need a place to clear my head, I often go to my study, which is a quiet oasis of neutrals. Cream and wheat tones offer me a respite from the noise and provide me with some much needed peace and tranquility. Then there were the glorious, mood-enhancing colors of late springtime in Atlanta, which sadly, I was only able to admire from my balcony. But what hopeful colors can be seen outdoors! Almost every shade of green is present in the trees, and against that verdant backdrop one can fully appreciate the uplifting pinks, blues and whites of the blooming hydrangea and dogwoods. Of course there have been perhaps more meaningful things, such as moments spent with loved ones, that have helped us get through these troubled times, but letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not underestimate the power of color to lift our spirits.

sugar, chile paste, orange zest, orange juice, onion, garlic and pepper. Remove as much air as possible from the bag and seal. Move the steak around to evenly coat it in the marinade. Refrigerate for 4 hours and up to 24 hours, moving the steak four or five times to evenly distribute the marinade. Heat a charcoal grill to high. (If using gas, place the gauge on the highest heat possible.) Wrap the tortillas in aluminum foil. Put them on the grill to warm them through, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the meat from the marinade and pat dry (discard the marinade). Season with the kosher salt. Grill until charred on both sides, 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 125 degrees Fahrenheit for rare. Transfer the steak to a cutting board, cover, and let rest for 5 minutes. Thinly slice the steak and season it with Maldon salt, if desired. Serve with the warm tortillas.

SWEET PLANTAINS CON CAJETA (Serves 4)

1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk Vegetable oil, for frying 4 very ripe plantains Peel the label off the can of condensed milk. Place the sealed can in a large saucepan and cover with water by 2 inches. Set the pan over high heat and bring the water just to a boil. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting possible and gently simmer for 3 hours. Be sure to add more water as needed to keep the can covered at all times. Carefully remove the can from the water, and let it cool to room temperature. Once cool, open the can and pour the cooked condensed milk, which is now cajeta, into an airtight container and set aside at room temperature until ready to use. Fill a Dutch oven or other heavy pot with oil to a depth of 2 inches. Heat the oil over medium-high heat to 365 degrees Fahrenheit.

TEXAS STAR PALOMA (Serves 1)

Ice 1½ ounces Gran Centenario Rosangel hibiscus tequila ½ ounce St. Germain elderflower liqueur ½ ounce fresh lime juice 1 ounce fresh grapefruit juice ½ ounce Simple Syrup Lime wedge, for garnish Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the tequila, St. Germain, grapefruit juice, lime juice and simple syrup, and shake well. Strain into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice. Garnish with the lime wedge and serve.

Peel the plantains and cut them on an angle into 4 even pieces each. Carefully add the plantains to the hot oil, 8 pieces at a time, and fry until the plantains are brown and crispy on the outside and very tender on the inside, 6 to 7 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate. Repeat to fry the remaining plantains. Place the warm plantains on a plate, drizzle with the cajeta, and serve immediately. 49

THE OPEN-CONCEPT DINING ROOM and kitchen harnesses the power of contrast. Crisp white cabinets from Bell Cabinetry pop against the black textured backsplash, creating a palette that harkens Scandinavia. “I wanted to draw people into a clean and inviting space that fits the relaxed lifestyle of Serenbe,” says designer Anna-Wooten Loggins. As the lead finish designer for the showhouse, Loggins threaded the kitchen’s black and white palette with natural textures throughout the 3,300-square-foot home. The dining room continued the high-contrast pairing, adding touches of blue in the form of stools and artwork to dress it up. She also kept real-life functionality front-ofmind, furnishing the space with a round table and comfortable, upholstered chairs. The room shifts to any situation—like big family dinners or work-from-home office.

ART, CREATED BOTH on canvas and through nature, was the catalyst for the living room designed by duo Angela Means and Danielle Carney. “We wanted to feature original works from as many local and emerging talents as possible,” the women said. Limited wall space did not deter the designers, who appointed 17 works throughout the room, including one painting that hung from the windows to add depth, warmth and privacy to the rest of the contemporary-leaning interiors. The porch is a continuation of the living room, which they dubbed “Modern Woodlands” thanks to the unencumbered natural views paired with streamlined furnishings and a gallerist’s approach (treating everyday objects as art). The duo adorned the space with decorative elements crafted of natural materials like stone, woven grasses and wood to blur the lines between indoors and out.

WHEN DESIGNING the powder room, Michele Gratch wanted to pack a big punch. A wallcovering by Anna French makes a bold statement, complementing the floating soapstone vanity. “Using patterned paper, especially stripes, made the space look bigger,” shares Gratch. “The design continues on the ceiling to draw the eye up.” In the foyer, Gratch juxtaposed the home’s Scandinavian simplicity with a warm Turkish rug. Since there was very little wall space, she utilized the patterned barn doors to display an abstract work by Karina Bania. Gratch pivoted in the laundry room with a more traditional and colorful Anna French wallpaper. “I love pattern and color and wanted this space to feel more like a beautiful escape than a room for drudgery,” she laughed. “Even the most utilitarian spaces can be beautiful.” 58

WARM EMBRACE MASTER SUITE REGAS INTERIORS

WHEN WALKING INTO the master bedroom, one immediately feels enveloped by the space. Although the room’s footprint is intimate, designer Kim Regas mixed luxurious layers and contemporary furnishings throughout the inviting retreat. “Because of its small size, we capitalized on its height. The bed crown and drapes were raised to the ceiling, helping unite the room instead of dividing it.” While Regas generally leans toward warmer tones, she brought the peacefulness of Serenbe’s surroundings indoors with a sea of soothing and cool blues and grays. The bathroom also reflects that sentiment, with a distinctive, tonal and textured wallcovering unifying the rooms. Throughout her mostly traditionally decorated master bedroom and bathroom, Regas pulled in the home’s overall modern sensibility with streamlined light fixtures and accessories. 60

UPSTAIRS BEDROOM & BATHROOM COLEY CUTTINO INTERIORS WHEN CONCEPTUALIZING the guest room, Coley Cuttino was inspired by the clean showhouse finishes selected by fellow designer Anna-Wooten Loggins. “Like many houses, the kitchen is the heart of the home, so I tried connecting my room with the kitchen,” she shares. Cuttino followed suit with a similar high-contrast black, white and natural color palette, starting with the distinctive canopy to optimize the height of the room, but with sheer panels so as not to weigh the space visually. Iron details and white plaster walls contrast with organic materials, like the detailed floors and woven rattan globe pendant. “I used textiles to warm up the space,” says Cuttino, who also covered the adjoining bathroom with a textured Phillip Jeffries woven grass cloth, pulling in the greys and black from the tile and vanity.

WHEN KENSON OWENS sought inspiration for the bedroom, she looked no further than outside. “The natural setting of Serenbe inspired me,” she shared. “It embodies outdoor serenity—a peaceful reprieve from the bustling city.” Calm, comfortable and warm were the ethos of the space, which she channeled with contrasting grays and blues that, like the great outdoors, vary in tone throughout the day. While dramatic contrast was a common Scandinavian thread, she used softer tones on her clean-lined, but plush bed canopies. A BRIGHT SPOT PLAYROOM PEBBLES NIX INTERIORS

ON THE TERRACE LEVEL, PEBBLES GLENN NIX masterfully created a screen-free haven that was cheerful yet considered. “I wanted a colorful, happy playroom that sparked creativity,” shared the designer and mother. In lieu of heavy upholstery and bean bags, Nix anchored the space with four delightful and durable mid-century chairs bursting with vintage Palm Beach personality. She designed a custom ottoman table that was the perfect height for board games, art projects and snack breaks. “I wanted clean lines to complement the interior and outside of the house, with pops of intentional colors to keep things playful.” Bold and beautiful House of Harris fabric hangs in the windows and is inset in the cabinet panels in the adjoining “pooches corner,” a sweet nook designated for dogs and packed with storage. “Even the most practical places need some color and fun,” she shared.

UPSTAIRS LOFT/OFFICE & STAIR HALL VIRGINIA CHEEK DESIGNS INSPIRED BY ITS DISTINCTIVE Scandinavian details, Virginia Cheek leaned into the loft’s modern disposition, sprinkling in welcoming appeal. “We continued the thread of high-contrast colors mixed with warm elements, like the floors and book installation,” says Cheek. The built-in shelves created a framework for the space, with a custom bench nestling perfectly inside and adding warmth with the mohair upholstery. She notes that the faux-bois Zak+Fox ceiling paper was a bit out of her comfort zone, but she was thrilled with the end result. “Transitional spaces can be tricky, similar to a foyer that’s too large with no detailing to break up the white ceilings and walls,” shares Cheek. “This unique ceiling treatment did just that—broke up the white space in a way that seamlessly transitioned the downstairs to the upstairs.” 68

NATURAL INSTINCTS LANDSCAPE AND PLANTERS FLORALIS GARDEN DESIGN

SINCE ITS INCEPTION, the Serenbe community has sought to celebrate its lush, natural setting in a functional but thoughtful way. To enliven the grounds of the Showhouse, Lucinda Bray and Tyne Martinez of Floralis Garden Design first added structure with evergreen gardenias, rosemary and grasses. Next, they organically layered in white-blooming kalimeris, blue and white flowering catmint, foxgloves, bearded iris and other mixed perennials to add consistent color throughout the growing seasons. “The painted exterior provided the perfect backdrop for cast-stone containers with a mixture of evergreens and flowering seasonal plants, chosen for both their prolific color and textural qualities,” shares Bray. As the season progresses, these plants bloom with shades of purples and blues and glints of pale yellow. “These hues and flowering cycles blend hardscape and landscape seamlessly, creating a welcoming entry to this home.”

ARCHITECTS STEVE DRAY and Cecilia Winston are masters of the Serenbe aesthetic, having designed countless homes in the Georgia hamlet. A STATELY SWATHE LIVING ROOM ♦ ERIC ROSS INTERIORS

Taking the living room from rustic to refined was an easy task for Nashville-based designer Eric Ross. All it took was a generous helping—yards and yards—of Thibaut fabric, which he ingeniously draped over a knotty pine wall, adding instant polish. “Since the entire first floor is one giant space, the fabric acts as an unobtrusive room divider,” he says. DINING ROOM AND KITCHEN ♦ JOAN ANDERSON INTERIORS Joan Anderson made it her mission to separate the kitchen and dining spaces from their surroundings. “My overall goal was to define the space,” she says. “That’s not always easy to do.” She created invisible dividing lines with area rugs, furniture placement and dramatic lighting from Visual Comfort. In the kitchen, she replaced old granite with HanStone Quartz countertops in Coast. Says Anderson, “I like the look of quartz, and it’s also so durable. It doesn’t stain, and it’s easy to clean—so it’s perfectly suited for a vacation home.” She pulled up a trio of Charles Stewart barstools (“They reminded me of tractor seats!”) for casual kitchen-counter dining, and carved out a more formal dining nook complete with a sophisticated cerused oak round table and rattan dining chairs. Inspired by both the terrain and tradition, Nancy Dyleski and Melanie Couch of Spruce Interiors set about to create an elegant, high-impact entry that’s an explosion of bright blue walls, blue-and-white porcelain and floor-to-ceiling draperies in bold blue fern-bedecked fabric. “Blue is our favorite color,” says Couch. “We painted the window trim and one of the walls to define the beautiful mountain views and to ground our palette.” With so little room in the space, they opted to hang classic blue-and-white platters in a not-so classic spot—on the window frame. “We hung it just as you would hang art on bookcase shelves,” she says. The gallery wall is a mix of vintage seascapes and native tortoise shells. The design duo’s use of natural elements with their signature blue makes for a unique Cashiers hello. In order to achieve just the right balance of formal and family-friendly for his living space, designer Jamie Elliott McPherson brought in a mix of elegant elements ranging from yards of Belgian linen, a massive French chest, pastoral paintings and his signature piece—a layered coffee table. Of the latter, he says, “I like to provide the function of a hard surface for resting drinks along with soft areas made for kicking up your feet.” The long, narrow space allowed him to create two “rooms”—a sophisticated sitting area and a fun-filled game zone. Says McPherson, “It’s totally multifunctional. GREAT ROOM ♦ KERRY HOWARD, TRIBUS INTERIORS Greenville, South Carolina designer Kerry Howard took his cues from his surroundings—literally. “Before we got started, we took a tour, and I found a beautiful hawk’s feather,” he says. That feather—in conjunction with the beautiful terrain—helped inform his take on a High Country artist’s retreat. Howard, formerly of KMH Interiors, gave the room a top-to-bottom makeover, starting with the dyed cork he added to the tray ceiling. “It’s very celestial—it’s like staring up at the stars,” he says. “It adds a lot of movement.” A floating daybed, an eclectic mix of antiques and large pieces of artwork by Southern artists—including a massive triptych by South Carolina painter Diane Kilgore Condon and the bold No. 5 piece on drop cloth by Paul Flint—come together to create an environment where creativity is free to flow. The first order of business for a cramped, wood-paneled bedroom? Drench the walls in white to brighten it up and create the illusion of space, says designer Cathy Rhodes. And when it came time to add color, Rhodes simply looked out the window. “I saw all these beautiful trees, and I decided that we had to go with green.” That natural selection allowed Rhodes to create a relaxing retreat built around mossy and grassy greens—including the custom canopy window treatments, custom wool headboard, shams and bolster. LAUGHRIDGE, OLD EDWARDS INN AND SPA Designer Holly Laughridge set the stage for rustic elegance in the master bedroom from the very start thanks to a dramatic metal bed by Texas artist Jan Barboglio. “It’s definitely the focus of the room. At 90 inches tall, it’s both bold and powerful,” says Laughridge. In order to balance all that heavy metal, she added softness to the space by painting the walls a soothing tan and adding lush linens, a vintage 1940s Herez rug and floral-and-dragonfly drapes—the latter of which were a nod to the views accessible from the room’s set of French doors. “The pattern is a perfect match for a country cabin,” says Laughridge. “When you look out from this room, you see lush trees, a horse pasture and an incredible view of Black Rock Mountain.” 83

Tasked with a bedroom that was “incredibly small,” designer Teri Duffy decided to transform it into the ultimate little girl’s retreat. Taking her cues from the property’s horse farm history, Duffy themed the room for a young equestrian. While the views and history were inspirational, the room itself didn’t have much by way of architectural interest, so she added some drama right above the quaint daybed. “We constructed the canopy to allow for some volume, and it also added a lot of personality to the room,” says Duffy. “The Isabel Kimbell fabric is just delightful for a mountain and equestrian property. I love that we were able to tell a story here about a little girl who woke up every morning with her horses right outside her window.” 84

After seeing rich bronzes and reds at Parisian trade show Maison & Objet, designer Bruce Andrews was inspired to transport the hues from Paris to Cashiers for this “Japanese jewelry box” of a bedroom. “Color has become an experience,” he says. “I wanted to bring that here to inspire people.” He covered the walls in a cinnamoncolored velvet, which is as practical as it is plush. “It keeps the room five degrees cooler in summer and five degrees warmer in winter,” he says. “It’s also a great sound barrier.” For more dramatic bursts of color, he painted the ceiling a bright pink bordered by a rich red and a green-gold cornice. But what’s a jewelry box without jewels? Says Andrews, “The chandelier was indicative of pearls with a modern twist.”

Sloped ceilings and natural wood walls drove every square inch of designer Leigh Mowry’s design plan for this cozy bedroom space. “I thought the inherent color and pattern of the wood were beautiful and appropriate for the mountain setting,” she says. But Mowry’s selections for the space were not provincial. In addition to choosing gorgeous textiles for window treatments and wallcovering, she also chose a rich green fabric for the custom window seat cushion. “It was almost exactly the green of the trees you see when you look out the window,” says Mowry. Here, vintage artwork mixes with modern furnishings, including a gold-and-stone-topped table and a sleek swivel chair in gray linen. “I always strive to combine various styles and textures as well as new and old pieces,” she says.

BEDROOM & BATH ♦ DEE SIMMONS INTERIORS The design for this Southeastern space actually began in the Middle East—on a trip to Turkey, to be exact. “I started my plan for this bedroom with all the wonderful textiles that I collected on a buying trip there,” says designer Dee Simmons. She brought in Turkish rugs, used Turkish fabrics for custom lampshades and draped an entire wall with a luscious Turkish textile, covering an awkwardly placed window in the process. “Without the window distracting the eye, I was able to hang a starburst mirror as the focal point,” she says. From there, she layered in a mix of pieces from different eras and finishes, as well as artwork displayed in somewhat unexpected places. Says Simmons, “The way the ceiling sloped—it just begged for sculptural objects on the floor.”

REFINED RUSTIC In order to create an elegant living space in the adjacent barn, designer Christy Dillard let the landscape and architecture guide her. “There is so much texture in this tiny space—from the stacked fireplace to the wood walls—you really get a sense of the natural, more rural setting,” she says. While she chose to keep the walls as-is, she painted the ceiling a sophisticated gray and layered in a mix of equestrian-inspired pieces, including the large Lucy horse painting by Bonnie Beauchamp-Cooke, a lamp made from an equestrian boot and a black wingback chair covered in hide. When designer Douglas Hilton spied the incredible views of Black Mountain from the deck, which runs the length of the house, he immediately said, “This is the space I want!” Says Hilton, “It says so much about Cashiers—you come up here primarily for the views.” He went to work, carving out three different living areas within the T-shaped deck. In order to keep everyone’s eye on the prized landscape, Hilton kept all the furnishings low. While the prettyyet-practical furniture was designed to withstand the elements, he also added a mix of surprising touches including luxe pillows, sculptural artwork and onyx accessories. “I wanted to keep it all clean and simple,” he says. “This space was made for guests to come out and relax and enjoy a glass of wine. FIRST-FLOOR PORCH ♦ LISA WESTER INTERIORS Lisa Wester had quite the design challenge to scale—how does one create a comfortable, inviting space that doesn’t compete with a neighboring mountain? “Standing there staring into the glass, I saw the mirror image of Black Rock, and that’s when it dawned on me: The space needed to be a reflection of the landscape,” says Wester. With the help of her 13-year-old daughter, she painted the window and door frames a soothing gray and added loads of texture via rugs and poufs as well as plenty of sophistication with solid-brass hardware on the chairs, velvety outdoor fabrics, gold-leafed artwork and a custom zinc-topped coffee table. SUBLIME DISCOVERIES

SHROUDED UNDER THE HEAVY CLOAK of forested growth, and with roots buried under blankets of earth, a mighty sentinel stood. Fed by the constant ocean breeze, this majestic live oak had flourished for 125 years—though no one knew it was there. When interior designer Nancy Braithwaite considered placement for her contemporary South Carolina beach home, she contemplated sight lines and sunlight—not existing plantings—because she knew that the gardens would be designed around the new house. Ultimately, she found a site that offered expansive views, abundant light and enormous privacy and peace. Backhoes plowed into the long-neglected yard and hauled away tons of decayed foliage. As the work progressed toward the place where the front of the house would be, landscapers were met by an imposing tree trunk with sprawling branches that had grown horizontally across the land. When the area was cleared and the canopy revealed, it was met with surprise, 96

delight and awe. Perfectly symmetrical, the canopy rose like a crown above the exquisitely patinated branches and trunk. The twists and turns of the branches told the tree’s story of having endured bracing storms, scorching heat and smothering humidity. It had changed and adapted in order to survive, and now the tree stood regally commanding the property. Nancy did not plan to design her home around a tree, but the quiet majesty and stunning presence it offered became the focal point of the landscape. The past few months have been unprecedented, yet light and hope have prevailed. We’ve learned to never underestimate the strength and power of the natural world; neither the lessons it teaches, nor the miracles that surprise. As you enter this new season, may you embrace the patina that the twists and turns of recent months have provided, as well as the chance for fresh beginnings, ever certain that there is beauty in the courage, strength and wisdom to age gracefully and naturally, and to accept life in all its glorious gifts.
