FLORAL DELIGHT ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: Your designs exude timeless, classic style. What was your inspiration behind this tabletop and what are the standout elements? HEATHER DEWBERRY: There are flowers everywhere in our client’s dining room—on the beautiful wallpaper and their gorgeous china, so we decided to take their “indoor garden party” to the next level to celebrate spring. Some of my favorite items in composing a gracious and welcoming tabletop are raffia place mats because they accentuate formal china beautifully and instantly relax the setting. I also use block-printed tablecloths as a winning addition to the mix, alleviating the darkness of many dining tables. AH&L: Tell us about the color palette you selected and how you implemented it from first to final layer. HD: The color scheme was pulled from the soft blue, green and peach tones of the scenic wallpaper. Having first sourced the blue tablecloth and rimmed raffia place mats, monogrammed napkins were the next step, and this green scalloped

set felt fresh and classic. Channeling the birds in the wallpaper, we added a vintage blanc de chine pair on the table. To carry the peach and light orange tones around the room, we ordered a fabulous custom striped cake and added kumquats and macarons to the sideboard. AH&L: This luncheon setting features many fun details, from the stamped wine bags to the personalized place cards. What layers are vital to a spring table setting to make guests feel welcome? HD: Personalized details show guests that you are excited to have them over. People love to know their spot at the table, and these monogrammed place cards repeated our garden theme. Plus, you can write a “table topics” question underneath that can be a great icebreaker for conversation. The monogrammed gift bags are a fun way to send your friends home with a glass of rosé to continue the celebration. AH&L: The verdant wallcovering invokes feelings of dining al fresco-style. What tips can you give our readers about hosting a

memorable meal during the spring season? HD: My best advice is to set the table a day ahead of time when you can really have fun with it. Once that’s done, the bottom line is to mix it up, keep things easy and serve food that is in season. Spring meals call for a breezier approach, so bringing the outdoors in, or items that are typically used indoors outside, creates a juxtaposition that makes gatherings more festive. AH&L: Your business partner, Will Huff, and you have worked together for years. Tell us about your dynamic and why it’s been so successful in Atlanta and beyond? HD: It’s hard to believe that Will and I have worked together for 22 years! Being able to bounce around design ideas and consult on roadblocks with each other has created a great synergy. We’ve stuck to our love for the classics over the years and try to shy away

from current trends. Now that fresh, traditional design is back at the forefront, we emphasize that we never left it! Our clients know that their interiors will reflect their personality, endure the test of time and will require only minor tweaking to feel current. Many of our images that circulate on social media are 10–15 years old and no one would know it. AH&L: March is a time where spring eagerness grows in Atlanta. What are you most looking forward to this season? HD: I love all the elements of spring that celebrate lightness and signal warmer days to come. I can’t wait to break out my spring sundresses and espadrilles, and hope that the Atlanta pollen holds off a bit this year! Featuring a pool, spa, cabana and plenty of open area for lounging and play, this recently overhauled backyard is an entertainer’s paradise. “We wanted it to feel like an extension of our home, but also a special place to retreat to at the end of a long week,” says designer and homeowner Whitney Durham. “We wanted all of the selections to feel natural, organic, charming and family-friendly.” Working with landscape architect Graham Pittman, Tennessee bluestone stepping stones guide visitors to various entertaining zones. The newly added pool features a raised spa with waterfall feature, and steps away, the cabana welcomes with punchy patterns on indoor/outdoor fabric. An abundance of floral and plant species— such as viburnum, Encore azalea, hydrangea, boxwood, autumn cherry and more—support fresh blooms year-round, while large evergreen trees and mature oak and magnolia trees provide privacy from surrounding homes. “We wanted interest during all seasons, whether that be with color, fragrance or textures,” says Pittman. Durham and her family couldn’t be more thrilled with the result. “We can have one child practicing soccer in the turf and one swimming with our dogs in the pool while we enjoy a cocktail and watch them from our view in the cabana, or while cooking on the Big Green Egg.”

Spring Fever

When first tasked with this project, landscape contractor Michael Jackson knew it would require a lot of labor to transform the overgrown backyard, however, it was the client’s love for flowers that fueled Jackson and landscape architect Richard Anderson’s motivation for a complete garden overhaul. “It was a project driven by the homeowner’s enthusiasm to have an expansive, ever-evolving garden that bloomed throughout the year,” says Jackson. “So that’s how we approached it—a combination of formal landscape architecture paired with less structured elements.” With an abundance of species, Jackson and Anderson incorporated plantings that would bloom throughout the year. “We knew the homeowner wanted to keep a similar palette to what they had at their California property—plenty of color, but no reds,” says Jackson. “Luckily the property’s high shade provided an ideal environment for some of their favorites—hydrangeas, hostas and roses.” The result: a charming vista that will be enjoyed for years to come.

Working in collaboration with architect Stephen Fuller and Carson McElheney Landscape Architecture & Design, interior designer Michelle Doughtie crafted a year-round retreat for her longtime clients. With the addition of a guest cottage, “We wanted it to feel like a part of the current architecture,” says Doughtie. “It was very important that it felt like it had always been there, and Stephen Fuller did an amazing job creating an exterior that is fresh and current but still speaks to the traditional home.” Equipped with an outdoor kitchen, shower and weather-resistant furniture, the cabana space acts as an ideal locale for spring soirées. In the second phase of the project, Carson McElheney Landscape Architecture & Design transformed the landscape into a lush garden that beautifully frames the main home’s lower sitting area. “[The homeowners] have a very large extended family and love to host parties with large groups,” says Doughtie.” I feel like we achieved their goal of beautifully appointed spaces.”

Located at the highest point of Blackberry Farm, Tennessee, this tucked away guest home by designer Tammy Connor and architect D. Stanley Dixon was designed to reflect a contemporary tree house. “We wanted the house and the outdoor and indoor spaces to make you feel as though you are part of the landscape, not just viewing it through a window,” says Connor. Reflecting the original summer homes built in the area in the 1930s and ’40s, locust bark siding accented with a green trim was inspired by the lichen growing on the nearby hardwood trees. The wood-shingled roof adds an additional element of both historic and organic materials. “We chose the materials and color palette to be sympathetic to the surrounding forest,” says Dixon. The enclosed porch, with trussed ceilings and vintage fabric cushions, is a favorite space of the homeowner, used for sunrise coffee sipping and outdoor dining. Says Connor, “When you sit out on the porch, you really do feel like you’re living in a modern-day Swiss Family Robinson dreamland.” 22

Moroccan Muse Designer Alison Baker worked closely with architect Braulio Casas to achieve this vacation-ready hideaway located in Alys Beach. Both the Mediterranean architecture of Greece and the The Royal Mansour resort in Morocco acted as inspiration throughout the entire design process. Water elements peacefully coexist alongside chic tiles and bright, playful patterns. “Water was an extremely important feature, evidenced by the many fountains, pools and plunge opportunities,” says Casas. Natural light dominates each sitting space and bright blue tones pay homage to the nearby ocean. “[The outdoor spaces] delight the senses and create a wonderful backdrop that only enhances the character of the house,” says Baker. “An escape from the day-to-day, the ensemble of the architectural and interior design seamlessly delivers the desires of the homeowners.”

The multiyear reimagining of PHIPPS PLAZA continues with new places to play, stay, shop and dine. The upscale shopping destination entered the year with more to attract retailers, Atlantans and visitors: NOBU HOTEL AND RESTAURANT ATLANTA, the five-story LIFE TIME BUCKHEAD (a 115,000-square-foot facility with Life Time’s athletic club and the Life Time Work coworking destination), the 13-story ONE PHIPPS PLAZA and an outdoor event space connecting new and existing buildings. “It’s an amazing time to be here,” says ERIC HOWARD, Phipps’ general manager. Citizens Culinary Market, a 24,000-square-foot, chef-driven food hall by the makers of New York’s Hudson Yards with options such as Umami Burger, is set to open in March near the greenspace, and Alexander McQueen, Dior, Fendi, Cartier and Paradise Grills should open in the first half of the year. The $5-million remodel of Legoland Discovery Center

is also expected to be complete then. Boutiques such as Givenchy and Amiri opened in 2022 at Phipps, a Simon property. Some of the anticipated stores will be near the greenspace, which hosts public and private events, as well as in the first level of the new One Phipps Plaza, a 365,000-squarefoot Class A, LEED-certified office tower. Hermès will start construction in mid-2023, with seven to eight to-be-announced luxury brands to come in the next year, says Howard. “We’ve seen a really transformational evolution of the retail here,” he says. Sales increased in 2021 and 2022 and about 30% of Phipps’ multigenerational customer base is from a seven-state region outside of metro Atlanta. The international traveler is a demographic that Howard expects to see grow. “Our collection of retail is unmatched,” he says.

GRAND DESIGNS Connectivity, walkability and artistry are woven into the vision for HUB404, a half-mile greenspace planned above GA 400. Conceptual drawings show a multipurpose, nine-acre park that will bridge the highway and Lenox Road, connecting to the MARTA Buckhead station and Path 400. The public-private partnership with the Buckhead Community Improvement District and HUB404 Conservancy is seeking to raise about $270 million for the project, says ANTHONY RODRIGUEZ, the conservancy’s executive director. Arts installations and cultural experiences are part of the vision for the public space. Work is expected to begin this year 26

engineering the bridges over Lenox Road, with the section over Peachtree Road slated for late 2024. The initial pedestrian bridges at Lenox Road that would serve as the first entrance to the park are scheduled for completion in 2025. Completion of HUB404, depending on fundraising, would take several years, likely not until 2030. The design decisions are guided by mobility, sustainability and biophilic elements connecting to the natural environment. Renderings by Rogers Partners, working with Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, show a shaded allée of trees and abundant canopy. “This one spoke to me in a very different way,” says Rodriguez. “It was artistic in and of itself.”

Naomi Von Habersham THE MONTH OF MARCH IS when most families take their spring break holidays, and with each passing year, it seems like parents are taking their kids on increasingly elaborate trips. Saint Bart’s, the Greek islands and African safaris are just some of the spring break destinations I’ve heard about recently, and while I think it’s great to be able to take such luxurious trips, it does make me a little nostalgic for the days when going skiing in the North Carolina mountains was as exotic as spring break ever got. Speaking of skiing, on a whim, I recently took my own spring break, and for whatever reason, I decided to go skiing in Aspen. Now mind you, I went skiing once, almost 40 years ago, and it was a disaster because I never could learn how to stop properly. My technique involved hurling myself into a snow mound, which wasn’t very graceful, but it did stop me from plowing into people. So why I ever thought that somehow I would magically take to skiing after all these years is beyond me. I spent a few hours on the slopes before deciding that skiing is just one of those skills that I will never master during my lifetime. But the trip wasn’t a failure … or maybe it was? While others hit the slopes, I spent my days shopping, and I suspect that the high altitude might have made me a little loopy. How else can I explain the dirndl that I bought? There was one bright spot to my trip. I discovered that I’m really good at the après-ski thing. Late afternoons, I would get myself dolled up in sporty-chic attire and hit the bars and restaurants to indulge in decadent fare: champagne, raclette, boeuf bourguignon and schnapps, but not all in the same meal, of course. Basically, I ate and drank my way through my spring break, which I’ve decided is not such a bad way to spend a skiing trip. Maybe next year, I’ll hit Saint Moritz. I hear their après-ski is to die for.

Botanico Hospitality Group introduces ultrachic modern Mexican restaurant PALO SANTO to West Midtown Written by EVAN EDWARDS

AN INDUSTRIAL-STYLE building on the Westside acts as home base for the city’s must-try modern Mexican establishment Palo Santo. Once inside, you are instantly transported to a luxe, coastal-inspired eating locale complete with a lively rooftop bar for guests ages 25 and over. After spending time in South Florida, chef Santiago Gomez joined forces with Felipe Rivera and Eduardo Rivera to establish Botanico Hospitality Group in Georgia. Palo Santo is the trio’s first restaurant in the city. “It’s not just dinner, it’s not just drinks—it’s a memorable dining, drinking and socializing experience,” says Felipe of their concept. “You can have an intimate date night in the dining room, a lively night out with friends on the rooftop or a little bit of both.” Chef Gomez describes the cuisine as a twist on traditional Mexican. “We honor Mexican ingredients, techniques and traditions while using local produce and a combination of modern techniques and 30

styles,” says Gomez. “Carne asada is paired with bone marrow, while las bravas are accompanied by black truffle.” To start, guests can choose from an array of delectable appetizers like the guest-favorite Las Bravas or the Wagyu Tartare with pine nuts, morita mayo, caviar and eggplant tatemada. For a main course, opt for the “A La Talla” (grilled octopus) with Guajillo sauce, crispy potatoes and shiso serrano mayo or the Bone-in Ribeye topped with Mezcal jus and truffle butter. And on the rooftop: “This is a Japanese-Mexican fusion,” says Gomez. “We focus on handrolls and tostadas—snackable dishes that are easy to grab and eat while holding a drink.” The cocktails at Palo Santo are one-ofa-kind and carefully curated by beverage director Antonio Morales. “We are agavefocused as a modern Mexican restaurant, but it’s not just about a margarita—we experiment with modern techniques and different agave spirits to create a menu

With extravagant agave chandeliers by artist and designer Angela Damman hanging overhead, the interior of Palo Santo is inspired by the bustling nightlife of Mexico City. “Downstairs we wanted to keep the rustic shell and exposed industrial ceiling while adding some sophistication to the space with the accents and finishes,” says Eduardo, who worked alongside interior designer Melody Rendon on sourcing all furnishings. As for the rooftop, the all-concrete bar channels inspiration from “architecture found in Mexican beach towns like Puerto Escondido, Costa Careyes and Cabo San Lucas,” says Eduardo. Looking toward the future, El Santo Gallo, a taqueria-style restaurant by Botanico Hospitality Group, is slated to open this spring. Says Felipe, “We do have some other concepts in mind, but for now, we want to focus on establishing these two restaurants as new staples in the city.” botanicohospitality.com

About the Kitchen This home started as a traditional, compartmentalized Virginia Highlands bungalow. The young family loved the neighborhood but desired a more modern environment with better translation to the outdoors. They previously lived in Australia and the influences show up in the design, materials and colorations. The kitchen was kept sleek and simple. Innovative REHAU materials were used on the perimeter cabinets in matte black paired with a high gloss white on the island cabinets. About the Kitchen Our clients wanted a dream-worthy kitchen but thought moving out of their 1927 Tudor in Morningside was required due to the petite footprint. After being presented with the various possibilities, they quickly decided to stay and renovate their beloved home. Their wish list included a highly organized, two-cook kitchen with a Parisian apartment vibe. There was consideration of a separate bar area in the home for entertaining, but we were able to incorporate that into the kitchen design as well. This jewel box kitchen packs a lot of punch with high quality materials, fine craftsmanship and attention to detail!

About the Kitchen This client came to us looking for clean, modern cabinetry that would fit the aesthetic of the new home he was building. He wanted high function with minimal cabinetry, so we made sure every cabinet had a purpose and organizational options. We opted for a beautiful grey-stained poplar finish for his kitchen with white quartz countertops. Complete with both function and style, we incorporated a table into the large island for friends to be able to gather and eat while the homeowner cooks. Clean lines and interesting textures were a key part of the overall design for this kitchen. We also incorporated dark, moody greys and blues along with crisp whites throughout the home.

About the Kitchen We wanted to maintain the midcentury vibe but give it a modern and unique twist. With some luxury retro elements like the curved island and heavy brass fixtures paired with the modern application of marble on the hood, floating shelves and metal framed glass doors, we were able to give this kitchen the special one-of-a-kind design the client was looking for. We chose to have a separate walk-in pantry with countertops and outlets for small appliances, to keep the main kitchen countertops clutter-free. The fabricator (A Touch of Stone, Inc.) meticulously cut a marble slab into bullnose strips that were applied vertically around the curved portion of the island. It was a truly collaborative effort between the fabricator, designer and cabinet maker to get the result of the floating bullnoses, metal toe kick, rift sawn oak side panels and the inset metal reveal under the countertop.

About the Designer Katherine Kidd created KKIDD Designs in the Atlanta/Decatur area as primarily a renovation design company. The challenge of working with the quirkiness of old homes and transforming them into something modern, yet unique, is where they all thrive. With function as a top priority when they redesign the layout of a home, they meticulously plan every space around the homeowner’s needs and lifestyle. About the Kitchen This house is quintessential southern elegance, and our job was to create a kitchen that matched the pretty bones of the space while also capitalizing on every inch of storage capabilities. We widened the island and moved the double ovens down to make way for a tall cabinet for in-kitchen grab-and-go cooking essentials. We also prioritized two cabinets to the counter to house small appliances, both of which have pocket doors so all can be closed off when not in use. Finally, we lined the walls with v-groove paneling, the perfect backdrop for the white marble countertops and white (and blue!) cabinetry to shine.

About the Kitchen The clients wanted a transformational, fresh and light-filled kitchen. We created this with the big steel window composition up and around the range hood, which took careful coordination to integrate with the beautiful pewter hood and solid marble backsplash. The combination of light-painted cabinets with the tapered profile combined with the dark stained rift oak finish on the island base and tall refrigerator cabinets play to the feeling of the light and dark contrast in the rest of the home. We had to carefully construct the island to be linear and to float the L-shaped seating portion to the end. This allowed a spot to sit and enjoy the island away from all the appliances. We waterfalled the ends and the back of the island and connected in a rift oak drop eating surface at 30-inch table height for look, convenience, and to fit the geometry of the room.

With a strong foundation in business and client services as well as years of owning her own design firm, Jane and team have had the opportunity to create many wonderful spaces in Atlanta and throughout the Southeast. They have curated projects working closely with clients nationwide to include homes in New Hampshire, Montana, Puerto Rico, Texas and more. About the Kitchen What to do with a kitchen as the children grow and begin to move away? That was the challenge facing homeowners Jane and her husband Dean as they made the decision to stay in their home and re-design its interior. The goal was a kitchen that became the place everyone gathers and to which everyone returns. In seeking a combination that is both luxurious and relaxed, both modern and classic, and by making decisions about placement and type of appliances and finishes, kitchen designer Matthew Rao and Jane collaborated on the design. About the Kitchen Our client’s spectacular new kitchen was a major part of a whole-home renovation. We renegotiated walls and adjacent areas to create an entirely new space that was highly customized to their needs. A dramatic Blackened Steel hood with mirrored stainless accents graces a magnificent 66” Viking Tuscany Range. The walnut plank island is accented by custom steel channel pulls and toe kicks. Opposite that is a seating counter under a wall of new windows that opens to a beautiful back yard and pool. The tops are honed Macchia Vecchia Italian marble with veining that pulls together all the finishes in the room. Walnut and dark grey cabinetry surround a stunning copper espresso machine that will take your breath away! This project was a wonderful collaboration between Cardea Home LLC, Habachy Designs Inc., Regents Custom Homes, and our very adventurous and insightful homeowners.

About the Designer Laurie Lehrich of Cardea Home has been designing kitchens and residential cabinetry for almost 30 years. She has a singular skill for infusing real, emotional resonance into living spaces by balancing inspired design with practical functionality. 2023 SPECIAL GUESTS OF HONOR SAM LANDO Owner, Lando Wines

Sam Lando began attending the High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction with his own label in 2014. He has been a regular attendee since then, pouring at Winemaker Dinners, Gents Lunch and hosting tasting seminars. Each year, his stellar auction lots have been crowd favorites, with last year’s lot raising more than $122,000! Sam Lando started his career working for large global wine producers, and soon identified his true love of working with and enjoying Pinot Noir. While his emphasis was in sales and marketing, he realized early on the need to understand as much as possible about differing winemaking and viticulture techniques. After working with and becoming friends with some of the best new world wine producers, it was a natural evolution to begin hobby winemaking. After five years with Kosta Browne Winery, he departed at the end of 2012. Working with dear friends was a deeply rewarding experience—personally and professionally. They worked (and played) so well together because of a love and passion for what they did. In addition to their shared affection for Pinot, they enjoyed the company of great people and food.

In the middle of a 2012 vintage, Sam and his wife, Jennifer, decided to take their winemaking hobby to the next level. They borrowed against their savings and began building the foundation to develop a small Pinot Noir focused winery. As for the winery, they rent space at one of the most advanced custom crush facilities in North America. There is no trickery or odd chemicals in the wines they make. DUANE NUTTER Known for his simple, yet intricate dishes, Chef Duane Nutter delivers chef-driven ‘Southern-national’ cuisine to all SONAT Hospitality Group concepts. Nutter has truly come into his own as one of the nation’s most innovative chefs, impressing diners and critics with his signature modern spins on classic dishes for more than 15 years. Nutter began his culinary career in 1994, studying under well-respected Chef Daryl Evans at the Four Seasons Hotel in Atlanta. Nutter went on to work at the Ritz-Carlton in Palm Beach, Florida before making his next big move in 2004 to Louisville, Kentucky’s Seelbach Hilton’s Oakroom. The Oakroom is one of only 48 AAA Five-Diamond restaurants in the world. In 2006, Nutter was invited to compete on the Food Network’s Iron Chef America, and the following year he cooked at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City. He has been praised in a variety of highly regarded publications such as Garden & Gun, Men’s Journal, Delta Sky Magazine, Condé Nast Traveler and Details. Most recently, Nutter was a nominee for the 2020 James Beard Foundation’s “Best Southern Chef.” The duo will soon open a Southern National in Atlanta’s historic Summerhill neighborhood. Audra and her husband, Matthew, have an active teenager who can be seen on Lovett’s middle school cross country team or playing soccer for Concorde Fire. When she isn’t a soccer mom, Audra has been active in the Atlanta community, chairing the Garden of Eden Ball, A Meal to Remember, and Pink Ribbons Luncheon. She is also a dedicated servant leader as a past president of the Junior League of Atlanta and currently serving on the boards of Leadership Atlanta and Fernbank Museum. Professionally, Audra is a practicing lawyer and the General Counsel of Aston Martin Lagonda of North America. Before joining the automobile industry, Audra was a trial lawyer with one of the city’s largest firms.

The Wine Auction has created such an inspiring, enjoyable and enduring call to action for Sandy that has kept her attending the event for the past 17 years. HIGH MUSEUM OF ART HIGHLIGHTS JOSEPH STELLA: VISIONARY NATURE FEBRUARY 24 – MAY 21, 2023 Co-organized by the High and the Brandywine River Museum of Art, this is the first major museum exhibition to exclusively examine the nature-based works of pioneer, American modernist Joseph Stella (1877 – 1946). Though Stella is primarily recognized for his dynamic, futurist-inspired paintings of New York, particularly of the Brooklyn Bridge, he was also compelled to express the powerful connection he felt to the natural world, a subject he would pursue persistently throughout his career. Visionary Nature will feature more than 50 paintings and works on paper that reveal the complexity and spirituality that drove Stella’s nature-based works and the breadth of his artistic vision. The exhibition will dig deeply into his works’ context as well as explore their inspirations, sources and stylistic influences.

EVELYN HOFER: EYES ON THE CITY MARCH 24 – AUGUST 13, 2023 Evelyn Hofer (American, born Germany, 1922 – 2009) was a highly innovative photographer whose prolific career spanned five decades. Despite her extraordinary output, she was underrecognized during her lifetime and was notably referred to by The New York Times art critic Hilton Kramer as “the most famous unknown photographer in America.” She made her greatest impact through a series of photobooks, published throughout the 1960s, devoted to European and American cities, including Florence, London, New York, Washington, DC, and Dublin, and a book focused on the country of Spain. Comprising more than 100 vintage prints in both black and white and color, Eyes on the City, the artist’s first major museum exhibition in the United States in over 50 years, is organized around those publications. The photographs to be featured combine landscapes and architectural views with portraiture, conveying the unique character and personality of these urban capitals during a period of intense structural, social, and economic transformations after World War II.

GEORGE VORONOVSKY: MEMORYSCAPES MARCH 24 – AUGUST 13, 2023 This exhibition marks the first major museum presentation of work by the late Ukrainian American artist George Voronovsky. Born in a small village in eastern Ukraine in 1903, Voronovsky immigrated to the United States after World War II and began working in the rail industry of Philadelphia. Employed as a train car cleaner and upholsterer for many years, he eventually retired to Miami Beach in the early 1970s. There he turned his room in South Beach’s Colony Hotel into an art refuge, living in the area until his death in 1982. His paradisiacal art installation included carved Styrofoam sculptures, cut in cans, and glorious paintings on cardboard and canvas, which melded his Old-World memories and his neon present. This exhibition will showcase approximately 40 of his paintings alongside sculptures he created from materials discarded along the local beaches, such as old Styrofoam coolers and pizza boxes. His work has been preserved by Florida-based collector and photographer Gary Monroe, whose photos of the artist and the vibrant art environment he created will also be included in the exhibition.

ALTHOUGH IT HAD BEEN updated in a previous renovation, this 1950s-era brick abode in Buckhead lacked a cohesive style and didn’t reflect its new owners, a young couple with three children. “The original renovation emphasized a French vernacular aesthetic, however the compartmentalized living spaces still felt like a ’50s ranch,” explains architect Stephen Fintak. “Our goal was to create a more relaxed English cottage that lives in a contemporary way.” During the nearly one-year gut renovation, the architect had the exterior brick repainted, raised the shed dormer to create a full second floor, replaced most of the windows and deliberately introduced the sort of minor imperfections that are a hallmark of rural English architecture. Think windows that don’t precisely align and shutters that don’t lay flat against the brick. “The original programming for this project was that of a smaller renovation, but the owners were not willing to go halfway and were very receptive to the broad-scope approach proposed by the design team,” he says. Involved from nearly the get-go, interior designer Lanier Gupton introduced a lively mix of furnishings punctuated by discreet patterns and pops of color. Surrounded by English Drabware porcelain, for example, a French barometer is one of the many timeworn pieces in the front foyer. And a vintage green hutch plays off the custom white cabinetry in the spacious kitchen and keeping

room. “It’s beautiful and formal, but the colors make it feel young and fresh,” she says. Indeed, inspired by the blue and green hues just outside, Gupton peppered the colors throughout the interior. A light blue area rug, for example, defines a convivial seating area in the keeping room and kitchen, where a pair of shiplap-lined arched niches house a scullery and a breakfast nook that overlook the backyard. And light blue draperies with a contemporary trim comprise a pleasing array of blues in the formal living room, complemented by a skirted sofa and a pair of mismatched antique chairs. While color and pattern play a supporting role in the main rooms, it takes center stage in several of the ancillary spaces. The bar, for example, is lacquered in a sage green hue accented by an antiqued mirror. “It’s a jewel box,” says Gupton. Concealing doorways to the en suite bathroom and a spacious closet, blue velvet-clad cabinetry likewise creates a wow moment in the husband’s office. “Each space has its own character, but they all feel cozy and warm,” she says. the designer worked closely with landscape architect Jonathan Bussell to select furnishings and accessories. A pair of blue umbrellas shade the teak chaises near the pool while perfectly coordinating with the newly added bluestone pavers. Centered behind the new spillover spa at the far end of the swimming pool, a sculptural olive jar is another one of Gupton’s finds. “It draws the eye back and creates a focal point,” says Bussell. nearly one-acre property. “The curvilinear forms nestle the house into the woodland setting of mature oaks and beech trees while echoing the sinuous lines of the stream that winds through the property,” says Bussell. UP A HILL AND OVER a rambling creek, the slate roofline of an English countrystyle home comes into view. The dual-gabled porte cochere is visible first, and through the gateway, the home’s facade—an edifice in weathered granite with elegant limestone detailing and a wrought iron balcony—is revealed. The small, formal cottage exterior belies the magnitude of the home’s 9,000 square feet and its luminous, serene interior. This measured unveiling of the home is intentional and echoed inside, says architect Bulent Baydar of Harrison Design, who collaborated with interior designer Karen Ferguson of Harrison Design, builder Bill Grant of Bill Grant Homes and landscape architect Chris Holden of Land Plus. Off the foyer, hidden paneled doors disguise an elevator and powder room, and unfurling passages reveal tucked-away guest suites, including a tower with a separate entrance. The subtle unfolding inspires intrigue and enjoyment from the many visitors—

children, friends and colleagues—the homeowners host regularly. The thoughtful eye toward intriguing spaces is reinforced in the graceful interiors, helmed by Ferguson, and is evident upon entering the home’s airy foyer. Here, a gray and ivory checkerboard floor, sweeping elliptical staircase and soothing white walls in Benjamin Moore Silver Satin create a welcome lightness that forgoes the moodiness of traditional manor homes. “The homeowners gravitate toward a cleaner palette,” says Ferguson, and the interiors derive energy and balance from strategically placed hues and materials that create a pleasing and cohesive visual map through the home. Through the barreled paneled vestibule, the dining room evokes a lush garden scene awash in soft pastels inspired by lustrous, hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper. “Building off that paper with the unexpected gray dining table and pink, blue and green color palette, the room feels light and fun,” says Ferguson. The soft blue in the dining room is echoed in the upholstered Highland House chair in the foyer and again on sitting chairs in the grand salon. Off the salon, it takes on a greater

depth in the dramatic ink-blue kitchen, where honed black granite countertops, brass hardware and an antique mirrored backsplash mingle to create a sophisticated, tailored effect. Satin brass finishes throughout are a unifying element, exuding warmth and brightness. Geometric furnishings, fixtures and architectural elements—from rounded archways to curved chair backs—add interest to lofty spaces. The home’s connection to the outdoors is palpable too, with manicured landscaping and views of a meadow, stream and

prestigious golf club. Expansive sliding doors on both ends of the grand salon unite the gathering space with the inviting exterior, and Juliet balconies off his and her offices beckon. “People have said that when they’re in this home, they feel like they’ve been to a spa; they feel rejuvenated,” says Ferguson. “And that’s how you feel when you’re with the homeowners. PROJECT CREEP IS AN all-toocommon phenomenon in home renovation projects, and that was the case when empty nesters commissioned interior designer Daniel DeSantis to spruce up their dated 1990s-era abode on seven verdant acres in Milton. Indeed, by the end of the decade-long project, DeSantis was working handin-hand with architects at Historical Concepts and landscape designers at Carson McElheney Landscape Architecture & Design to transform the dwelling into an English Arts & Crafts home surrounded by relaxed, informal gardens inspired by the Cotswolds.

“They envisioned a warm, comfortable home that reflected their interests in science, history and land preservation,” says DeSantis. “Something rustic that spoke to the area’s old barns and historical houses.” To create that sense of history, the designer incorporated wood from a decommissioned tobacco warehouse in Kentucky throughout the interior. For example, reclaimed beams add character to the soaring shiplap-covered ceiling in the living room, where the designer refaced the formerly brick fireplace with Tennessee fieldstone accented by a salvaged wooden mantel. 117

Such beams likewise elevate the formal dining room, which has been updated with pecky cypress wall paneling. “Preserving things from the past was important to them,” he says. “Everything tells a story.” Running with that story, architects Domenick Treschitta and Allyson Vincent worked closely with the owners and DeSantis to further elevate the home, which had previously been a mishmash of styles. “They knew that it didn’t live up to the character Dan had created on the inside,” says Treschitta. “As we say, paper is cheap, so we dared to dream and came up with some aggressive ideas.” The architects recognized that making a few strategic changes would lend the home an English Arts & Crafts feel that would align with the newly revamped interior. Simply removing the window shutters, redesigning the windows and painting the formerly orangish-red brick with a white limewash, for example, lent the home the sort of old-world character the clients envisioned. “You can see where it’s 121

weathered in certain areas,” says Treschitta. “It gives it a patina and the feeling that it’s been there for a while.” Even more dramatically, the architects streamlined the gables, designed a new front bay, adding square footage to several rooms, and created a detached carriage house, which opens on three sides to the relaxed, informal gardens that surround both structures. “Everything feels like it’s been there for a very long time,” says Treschitta. “It’s green and romantic.” The architect is quick to credit Carson McElheney Landscape Architecture & Design for enhancing that illusion. To create a grander sense of arrival, the firm relocated the driveway and motor court, the house slowly coming into view as it leads through the forest, where the team planted ferns, buckeye and other native plants.

Gray Crab Orchard stone pavers crisscross the property and elevate the poolside patio, which is surrounded by perennials designed to bloom throughout the year. “The design is elegant, understated and very intentional,” says Kaitlyn Peake of Carson McElheney Landscape Architecture & Design. “It feels like a beautiful cottage garden near the house, but the natural woodland was preserved and enhanced.” The owners are overjoyed with the result and eagerly anticipate hosting large family gatherings in their newly expanded dining room and carriage house. “They were wonderful clients who wanted to run with most of our ideas, which was fun,” says Treschitta, crediting the close collaboration for the outcome. “We’re very proud of the way it turned out.” See Resources, Back of Book. 125
