When the first residents moved to Serenbe 16 years ago, we had a master community design on paper and only a few houses built, yet I could already see what Serenbe would look like once completed. I could see how the winding country roads would connect our family’s first home in Chatt Hills—now The Inn and Farmhouse restaurant—to all the neighborhoods. I could see the varied styles of homes with welcoming porches clustered closely together among the woods and how we would preserve as much of the land as possible. I realize now that my years in hospitality running the Pleasant Peasant Group—where I brought people together over good food in beautiful spaces—informs my current work and what many now call “community placemaking.” Food and hospitality have been at the forefront of everything I do—our country home eventually became an Inn, and we offered guests dinner then fried chicken lunches that turned into The Farmhouse restaurant. Growing fresh local food is an integral part of the vision. “Agrihood” wasn’t a term when we planned an organic farm in the community, but we believed in farmers and connecting people to the natural food systems. We even integrated edible and medicinal landscapes into the neighborhoods so you’ll find blueberry bushes at the crosswalks. You may know us for our extensive cultural events, staying at The Inn, dining at one of our restaurants or maybe you’ve read about us in a magazine or newspaper or listened to our podcast, Serenbe Stories. The years we’ve spent in this community have flown by, but underneath the beauty of Serenbe there is deep substance and larger purpose. We have created a model of how to build with nature rather than against it. Our purpose is to develop in balance with the planet by connecting people with nature. We do that in many ways but it starts with our respect for the land, the climate and our neighbors. The buildings and the sidewalks, the sustainable practices, the preserved nature trails are all important features that form the foundation for this place we call Serenbe. The people and personal connections energize those spaces making this a special place where waving to neighbors and strangers alike is commonplace. People tell me to be touched by Serenbe is to be changed forever. But I know it’s the collective spirit of the people who make Serenbe a true community. You, our residents and visitors, inspire me to do more.

THE ART FARM AT SERENBE

Serenbe is a community that passionately explores, embraces and expands the connections between nature, culture and the art of living. Multiple arts programs at Serenbe have been built out of intention and have grown organically over the years. The Art Farm is the central platform and place for cultivating artists and the arts through residencies, workshops, studios and has been a literal platform for dinners, performances and artist celebrations.

In a typical year, the Art Farm at Serenbe hosts 50+ public programs, including it’s signature series, Art Over Dinner. Prior to the pandemic, gallery exhibitions at Gainey Hall, art classes, corporate workshops and more also filled our roster with the goal to bring back a full slate in 2022. The Art Farm is located across the street from the Serenbe community and provides an opportunity to bring people together in support of the arts, with the belief that art in everyday life can create a greater understanding of the world.

Also located at the Art Farm are artist residency cottages designed by the award winning Rural Studio architecture program. These cottages promote the creative process by providing artists of the highest caliber uninterrupted time and space and a welcoming community in which to create. Hundreds of artists have stayed in and been supported by the artist residencies over the years. You’ll also find art in the meadows of Serenbe where ballets and plays have been performed, films are shown and the Atlanta Symphony honored us during the pandemic with a safely distanced two nights of magical performances in 2020. Serenbe is also a platform and forum for dialogue providing cultural presentations, workshops and seminars for residents, neighbors and visitors to interact with cultural and environmental thought leaders and eminent scholars. Arts, culture and classes happen all over the neighborhood—from the trails to galleries including a co-op space featuring over 40 artists members from Serenbe and the greater community. Art classes can also be taken, offering private and group fine art classes located in a Grange art studio.

This growing 40-acre Art Farm complex serves as a place for artists, the arts and culture and provides a physical space to ignite passion and imagination in nature and works in collaboration with the greater community and beyond along with national and international partners to amplify their work and makers. ART OVER DINNER Art Over Dinner is a series of gatherings with artists and the organizations that support their work. We collaborate with chefs and farmers to create a seasonal meal that showcases winemakers and brewers, and invite our guest artists to spark the conversation in an intimate setting. We have one dinner planned this fall with a full series coming in 2022. GAINEY HALL GALLERY SHOWS Curated art exhibitions in Gainey Hall, an Inn at Serenbe event space, rotating every 6-8 weeks. Artists featured are Serenbe residents and regional artists, emerging and established. Gainey Hall as a venue provides artists with a rich, diverse audience of visitors, corporate event guests, neighbors and residents. Proceeds from artwork sales support local artists and the Art Farm. Note: During the pandemic, the Acton School enrollment grew so much that classes expanded into Gainy Hall. Gallery shows will return once Acton has finished their new school building.

Steve and Cecilia Dray, formerly partners of Winston-Dray Designs, have combined their 30 years of residential design experience with Serenbe’s unique vision. Their goal is to enhance the relationship between residents and the natural environment through thoughtful and authentic design. They find inspiration through their travels and continued learning experiences such as their work with The Institute of Classical Architecture and Art (ICAA).

South Haven was founded among friends and colleagues who have dedicated their careers to designing and building the finest custom homes. Together, the South Haven team delivers the experience and resources to make your custom homebuilding process realistic, predictable and delightful.

Living and designing in Serenbe has afforded them the opportunity to explore a variety of architectural styles and influences, designing custom and spec homes and offering home plans for builders and clients alike. This is their third designershowhouse with Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Magazine and their designs have been featured in numerous local and national publications.

Since moving from healthcare to interior design full-time in 2014, Beth has been an Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Bath of the Year winner, designed for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestras Showhouse and Gardens and the Atlanta Magazine HOME Modern Showhouse, and has created vignettes for the Atlanta Food and Wine Festival, ADAC, dk Gallery. She has been published in Traditional Home, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Atlanta Magazine’s HOME, Kitchen and Bath Makeovers and more.

For more than a decade, Jeffrey has passioned his discipline and is designing a future in Atlanta and across the globe. Whether business owners or homeowners, Jeffrey’s clients are assured from day one of a clear design process that starts with listening to carefully detail the full scope. This includes budget and research studies, current site or building assessment, program needs to align with the client’s aesthetic and wishes. Next stage is renderings that are art pieces themselves, and with final client approval, construction drawings and specifications for permitting. With offices in Atlanta and New York, Jessica Davis’ multi-faceted design studio, Atelier Davis, offers a creative vision that spans across interiors, landscape design, furniture design and her notable in-house hardware brand Nest Studio. Atelier Davis is known for imaginative design solutions, making spaces as livable as they are eye-catching. Atelier Davis seeks to inject personality into a space with something offbeat and unique to each client. Jessica’s goal is to devise spaces that tell a story about their inhabitants and the way they live. She has worked on new-builds, restored Victorian gems and taken midcentury modern homes into the present day.

Kit Castaldo Design is a full-service interior design studio based in Atlanta. After graduating from Florida State University with a degree in fashion merchandising and textiles, Castaldo later followed her heart and earned a second degree in interior design from the Art Institute of Atlanta. Her southern roots coupled with extensive travel throughout Europe and the Middle East give her a true appreciation for an array of different design aesthetics. Castaldo is thoughtful about transforming homes by focusing on detail and strives to create beautiful, comfortable spaces while reflecting each client’s personality—evoking a sense of sophistication and creating a feeling of home for each and every one of her clients.

Lorraine Enwright, award-winning designer and owner of Atlanta-based design firm Enwright Design Inc., has spent more than 20 years creating well-loved spaces for clients around the globe. Lorraine’s holistic, heartcentered approach to design begins with understanding the client to craft personalized spaces using color, light and decorative expression. Her approach led to the creation of her brand Intuitive Dwellings, which helps clients rediscover their intuitive nature through architectural and interior design. Lorraine and her clients embark on a journey of self-discovery that is both provocative and inspiring, creating unique design solutions that are timeless, artful and highly personal.

Patrick and Meghan Sharp are a husband and wife design team with a focus on modern, well edited residential and commercial spaces. When the couple were first married they quickly discovered their mutual passion for design. The design duo began renovating homes, from San Francisco to Serenbe. One renovation landed them on the cover of a design magazine and the Sharps started their eponymous design studio in 2015. Mister + Mrs Sharp offer full service design to clients in Serenbe and Atlanta. Their work has been featured in multiple shelter magazines and media outles including Rue, Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles, Atlanta Magazine’s HOME, Naturally Danny Seo and HGTV.
