From subtle stripes and organic grasscloths to fanciful florals and hand-painted scenes, wallcoverings and murals have long played a starring role in many Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles-sponsored showhouses, and this year was no exception. At the most recent Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens, (recap begins on page 82), Honorary Chair Tish Mills Kirk enveloped her sleeping space in a dazzling scenic wallcovering that left visitors feeling immersed in a lush park or forest. (And just imagine the calm of waking up under a canopy of trees every morning!) While selecting a bold pattern can be a major commitment, this collection of showhouse spaces from over the years proves that unique wallcoverings can leave a lasting—and most stylish—impression, in rooms both big and small.

KNOWN FOR HIS MASTERY OF traditional architecture and classical designs that bridge the gap between old and new, architect Norman D. Askins, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s (ICAA) 2022 Lifetime Achievement honoree, has spent more than 40 years paving the way for gracious Southern living. “Norman Askins has truly set the bar for Atlanta architecture,” says Suzanne Kasler, who is a member of the ICAA Southeast Board of Directors and is the 2022 Shutze Awards chairperson. “His unique positivity, classical point of view and support of young talent has made an incredible difference in Atlanta architecture and the Atlanta design community.” Growing up near Birmingham, Alabama, Askins’ admiration for architecture developed at an early age, spending days riding his bicycle through the streets of Mountain Brook teaching himself his architectural likes and dislikes. Throughout the years, that admiration grew into a profound passion for historical preservation, restoration and residential design, eventually leading him to open his eponymous Atlanta firm in 1977. “Atlanta was good to me when I started my practice,” says Askins. “We got so lucky to have the incredible talents of architects like Philip Shutze, Neil Reid, Bo Dean and James Means. They set the standard for true classicism in the South.”

NORMAN ASKINS SHARES HIS FAVORITE INSPIRATIONS DESIGN INSPIRATION FROM THE PAST: Without a doubt Attingham Park summer school in England. I first went there for summer school in 1966 and again in 1994. Attingham was an exhaustive three-week study of historic architecture and decorative arts, traveling from one great house to the next.

Askins has since become a staple of his own in the city. His unwavering devotion to his craft drew in eager young architects looking to learn—including Yong Pak, D. Stanley Dixon and William B. Litchfield—before establishing firms of their own. “I now have 24 firms that I compete with and they all do great work,” says Askins. “We’re all still buddies and I’m very proud of them.” And with his expertise in historical precedent, devotion to elegant, yet innovative design and a passion for people and how they live, it’s clear why Askins remains a leader in the industry, continuously breathing life into new homes and restoring the old to their original grandeur. As for what’s on the horizon for the renowned architect: “Just keep on keeping on.” Askins will be honored by the ICCA Southeast at the 16th annual Philip Trammell Shutze awards on Sept. 17. normanaskins.com

FAVORITE PLACE IN ATLANTA: It’s not public necessarily, but my favorite place in Atlanta is my back porch and courtyard, which transports you from busy Atlanta to a peaceful world.

ON A CLASSIC SUNDAY AFTERNOON: After working in the yard, you would most likely find me asleep or watching Downton Abbey on my porch in Highlands, enjoying the views of the mountains and my backyard.

T.S. ADAMS STUDIO ARCHITECTS, INC. is helping redesign the 15-acre CHASTAIN HORSE PARK (chastainhorsepark.org) to expand its nationally recognized therapy program for children, teens and adults. The original stables were founded in the 1930s, and now the park is one of the country’s last urban horse parks, conducting more than

5,500 sessions annually. The $8.95 million project includes new covered areas and climate-controlled spaces with a focus on efficiency and an artistic eye toward its structures. Two new barns are designed by TIM ADAMS in distinct and differing styles: a shingle-style barn with a gambrel roof for the Therapeutic Horsemanship Center and a Southern vernacular for the boarder barn. The center’s location on a hill and its size—15,595 square feet on the first floor and 1,170 square feet on the second floor—makes it visible from the neighborhood and major roadways. “It is going to enhance the community,” says Adams. “The horse park in general has always been this iconic thing. This is going to draw more attention to it.” TRISHA GROSS, executive director of Chastain Horse Park, a 501(c)(3), credits Adams’ experience building homes and barns as important because of its presence in an “amazing residential neighborhood.” “This is going to enable us to stand tall from a facilities viewpoint,” says Gross. MACALLAN CONSTRUCTION and GROVE STREET PARTNERS also are collaborators. The project, which includes an additional covered riding arena and expansion of paddocks, is expected to be complete by mid 2024.

General manager GERASIMOS FERENTINOS says although occupancy has not rebounded to prepandemic levels, he is optimistic by the demand for group and leisure customers seeking an elevated experience. “2023 could be probably the best year in the history of the hotel,” he says.

The INTERCONTINENTAL BUCKHEAD ATLANTA enters the fall with a new contemporary look, thanks to the luxury property’s first major transformation since it opened in 2004. The hotel’s signature restaurant is now the second U.S. location of The Americano, a modern Italian steakhouse by celebrity chef Scott Conant. KTGY SIMEONE DEARY DESIGN GROUP, based in Chicago, updated the lobby lounge with rose marble floors and abstract paintings by Atlanta artist Niki Zarrabi, as well as the breakfast cafe and 422 signature suites and guest rooms. Naomi Von Habersham I HAVE A FEELING THAT MY current home is likely my forever home. You see, I’m a creature of habit, and I don’t do well with change, so even thinking about moving and adjusting to a new environment is enough to make me curl up in the fetal position. Not that I’m complaining or anything. If I end up living in this home for the rest of my life, I’ll be perfectly content. My home suits me to a T, and that, in my opinion, is what helps a house become a forever home. That being said, I do daydream from time to time about what my ideal forever home would be. Call it an exercise in wishful thinking. So what does it look like in my mind? It’s definitely English Regency in style, much like some of the homes designed by the great Philip Shutze, because one can never go wrong with anything reminiscent of Mr. Shutze’s work. Inside the house, the rooms would be on the small side. It might just be me, but I prefer the coziness of small spaces. The kitchen would be functional but not extravagant, and there would have to be an adjacent butler’s pantry to hold all of my china, table linen and the other accessories I seem to accumulate at an alarming rate. Oh, and a proper, old-fashioned breakfast room too. I would love to have one of those. I see lots of classic wallpapers, from a Zuber scenic paper for my study to one of those charming Paul Poiret prints from Schumacher for the powder room. There must be plenty of bookshelves, too, in almost every room. After all, books do furnish a room, to quote the writer Anthony Powell. My dream home’s fabrics would be like a hit parade of favorites, including anything and everything from Rose Cumming. Gosh, writing all of this down is getting me excited about my dream home, even though in all likelihood, it will only remain a fantasy. But you know what they say—dreams do sometimes come true.

ADDING TO THE ASSEMBLAGE OF exceptional restaurants in the rapidly growing West Midtown, Bastone brings Atlantans their very own mozzarella bar featuring homemade pastas, craft cocktails and wine. Already famous for his establishments Grana and The White Bull, chef Pat Pascarella of The Porchetta Group is the brains behind this new dining concept that offers guests an array of mozzarella and salumi options to taste test. “Our focus is on mozzarella and pasta dishes inspired by Campania, Abruzzo and Puglia,” says Pascarella. “We offer a robust mozzarella and salumi bar and tastings that include mozzarellas accompanied by boards of prosciutto, roasted artichoke, eggplant caponata and more.” Described as simple but elevated, the menu also features seasonal small plates, salads and an evolving selection of pastas.

As for the dining experience, Pascarella wants guests to feel as though they are on a holiday. “I want it to feel like an all-day Aperitivo hour,” says Pascarella. “We want guests to be enjoying salumi and mozzarella while sipping on a spritz. Everything’s meant to be shared—guests can try a bunch of different dishes and create their own experiences that way, or leave that to us and we’ll make it really special.” Beverage director Anthony Panzica depicts the drink program as a thoughtful roundup of cocktails that uses as many farm-sourced ingredients as possible. “We love our boozy and stirred cocktails, but Bastone really celebrates those that are shaken and fresh,” says Panzica. “You don’t want to weigh down your palate when you’re knocking back mortadella and burrata. The spritz menu has a great

A LETTER FROM

SERENBE’S FOUNDER When the first residents moved to Serenbe 17 years ago, we had the full community design on paper and only a few houses built, yet I could already see what Serenbe would look like once completed. I could see how the winding country roads would connect our family’s first home in Chatt Hills—now The Inn and Farmhouse restaurant—to all the neighborhoods. I could see the varied styles of homes with welcoming porches clustered closely together among the woods and how we would preserve as much of the land as possible. I realize now that my years in hospitality running the Pleasant Peasant Group—where I brought people together over good food in beautiful spaces—informs my current work and what many now call “community placemaking.” Food and hospitality have always been at the forefront of everything I do—our country home became a bed and breakfast then an Inn, and we offered guests dinner then weekend fried chicken lunches that turned into The Farmhouse restaurant. Growing fresh local food is an integral part of the vision. “Agrihood” wasn’t a term when we planned an organic farm in the community, but we believed in farmers and connecting people to the natural food systems. We even integrated edible and medicinal landscapes into the neighborhoods so you’ll find blueberry bushes at the crosswalks and fig and apple trees along the sidewalks. You may know us for our extensive cultural events, staying at The Inn, dining at one of our restaurants or maybe you’ve read about us in a magazine or newspaper or listened to our podcast, Serenbe Stories. The 15-plus years we’ve spent in this beautiful community we call home have flown by, but underneath the beauty of Serenbe there is deep substance and larger purpose. We have created a biophilic model of how to build with nature rather than against it. Our purpose is to develop in balance with the planet by connecting people with nature and each other. We do that in many ways but it starts with our respect for the land, the climate and our neighbors. The buildings and the sidewalks, the sustainable practices, the preserved nature trails are all important features that form the foundation for this place we call Serenbe. The people and personal connections energize those spaces making this a special place where waving to neighbors and strangers alike is commonplace. People tell me ‘to be touched by Serenbe is to be changed forever.’ But I know, it’s the collective spirit of the people who make Serenbe a true community. THE ARTS AT SERENBE

Serenbe is a community that passionately explores, embraces and expands the connections between nature, culture and the art of living. The ART FARM is our non-profit platform and place for cultivating artists and the arts through music, film, dance, theatre, artist residencies, workshops, and public art projects and it has been a literal platform for dinners, performances and artist celebrations. One aspect of the Art Farm is the artist residency cottages designed by the award winning Rural Studio architecture program. These cottages promote the creative process by providing artists from all backgrounds uninterrupted time and space, and a welcoming community in which to create. Hundreds of artists have stayed and been supported through residencies over the years. You’ll also find art in the meadows of Serenbe where ballets have been performed, films are shown, and the Atlanta Symphony honored us with two nights of magical performances. Serenbe also provides a forum for dialogue, cultural presentations, workshops and seminars for residents, neighbors and visitors to interact with cultural and environmental thought leaders and eminent scholars.

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY

GEMMIE DAYRIT spent her childhood in the Philippines, Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States, leading to a fascination with culture, love of travel and curiosity about the world. She founded her own company that runs and manages exhibition retail operations—work that led to a number of exciting life experiences, including a visit to the Titanic wreck site in the North Atlantic. She was also part of the team that launched the ArtScience Museum in Marina Bay Sands Singapore, and was involved with many projects associated with the venue.

The ART FARM DECORATIVE ARTS FELLOWSHIP invites a Southeastern artist in their early-to-mid career to feature their work in the Serenbe Designer Showhouse. The artist will make objects for the interiors of buildings and/or interior design—specifically textiles, furniture, lighting, ceramics, metalware or fine art—and be chosen by the editorial staff of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine and the lead designer for the Serenbe Designer Showhouse.

GEMMIE DAYRIT

Gemmie ended her nomadic lifestyle when she found her home in Serenbe. She is an active member of the Art Farm and is chair of Public Arts and Special Projects, fusing her personal inspirations with her work expertise. This council was created to provide unforgettable adventures where inspiration is ever-present. As Gemmie says, “[Their] aim is to disarm your ordinary day with artistic alchemy and reward curiosity.”

ARTS FELLOWSHIP

The 2022 recipient of the Decorative Arts Fellowship is LYALL PENLEY, a wildlife and landscape photographer in Atlanta, Georgia. Having grown up the son of two professional artists, he began his lifelong passion for art and photography early on. Drawing and painting since he could hold a pen, he has developed a keen sense of perspective, composition and eye for detail. After a trip to Wyoming in 2019, his love for landscape and wildlife photography was born. Since then, and many trips back to Wyoming and Montana since, he is proud to offer memorable images of the American West and more.

Steve Dray and Cecilia Winston, formerly partners of Winston-Dray Designs, have combined their 30 years of residential design experience with Serenbe’s unique vision. Their goal is to enhance the relationship between residents and the natural environment through thoughtful and authentic design. They find inspiration through their travels and continued learning experiences such as their work with The Institute of Classical Architecture and Art (ICAA).

Andrew Kelly is a licensed builder and principal partner of 10/23 Construction. Owned and operated by Andrew and Amy Kelly, 10/23 Construction is a family-owned construction firm with over two decades in the home building industry. The 10/23 Construction philosophy is simple: to build each home as if it were our own. This is the guiding principle that informs every decision made and every partner chosen.

Alec Michaelides co-founded Land Plus in 1985, bringing his multi-layered design talents to a wide array of residential and estate clients. With a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Virginia Tech, Alec’s fine eye for site planning and landscape architectural design has been honed by his experience in project management and site construction coordination. Alec has forged invaluable alliances with highly respected architects, designers, builders and real estate professionals, and has curated a trusted team of hardscape and landscape contractors to bring his visions to life.

Living and designing in Serenbe has afforded them the opportunity to explore a variety of architectural styles and influences, designing custom and spec homes and offering home plans for builders and clients alike. This is their fourth Designer Showhouse with Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and their designs have been featured in numerous local and national publications.

FRONT PORCH COLEY CUTTINO Coley started Coley Cuttino Interiors in 2014 and has since worked on various projects both nationwide and abroad. She enjoys mixing traditional and contemporary elements in a cohesive manner, keeping an open mind always to the endless possibilities of design. DEN & LIBRARY KRISTAN MOORE Kristan’s passion for design began in her childhood when she would clip pictures from her grandmother’s Southern Accents magazines to create design boards. This passion took Kristan through the University of Georgia’s Landscape Architecture program. In 2006, she combined her training and talent for interior design with her landscape architect training and founded Kristan & Co., a full-service design firm. Kristan’s work employs clean lines, soothing palettes and an understanding of space that intersects function and flow. One renovation landed them on the cover of a design magazine and the Sharps started their eponymous design studio in 2015. DINING ROOM, BAR, PUBLIC POWDER ROOM & INTERIOR SPECIFICATIONS An aubergine bar with Arabescato Corchia marble and faceted crystal sconces atop an antique mirrored backsplash sets the stage for Kit Castaldo’s sophisticated, tailored formal dining room. “It acts like jewelry,” says the designer. The sconces coordinate with both the tiered chandelier over the fluted oak table and the bespoke ceiling moldings—by architect Linda MacArthur—which are painted in alternating bands of flat and highgloss white. “This architectural detail adds dimension,” says Castaldo. A large painting by Todd Murphy and smaller pieces of custom-framed art pop against the charcoal grasscloth wallcovering, which is balanced by a light silk rug and white-glazed linen drapery panels with a beaded trim that adds a touch of extra shimmer. “It’s a tailored, dressy approach,” says Castaldo, noting that it’s a shame that dining rooms have fallen out of favor in recent years. “A dining room is a place to be a little more formal and make great memories.” —Tate Gunnerson 85

KITCHEN & BREAKFAST ROOM The light-filled kitchen served as the starting point for the home’s interior design, where the clean lines of the cabinetry by Bell Cabinetry & Design and the curvature of the window laid the foundation for stunning architectural details throughout. On the side walls, quartersawn white oak cabinetry is finished with a light whitewash stain, softening the sharp edges of the multi-faceted door fronts that conceal items like appliances and a coffee bar. The periwinkle cabinets emboldened designer Cathy Rhodes to let her love of blue run through the spaces, most notably in the sitting area’s cloud wallcovering by Emma Hayes. “This room reflects my goal on projects—a clean, tailored look that is transitional and rich in texture with a quiet use of color,” says Rhodes. She collaborated with Bradley to customize the media cabinet, ottomans and breakfast table, and designed the new curved Genie barstool with a thicker, higher back. Contemporary paintings by Lynn Sanders and flowers in small containers (rather than a formal arrangement) for the tablescape offer movement. Nearby, four Cooper lounge chairs invite loved ones to enjoy the happy atmosphere while gazing upon the clouds. —Lori Johnston 87

SCULLERY, BAR & PANTRY Traditionally an often lackluster space, this home’s scullery, which serves as a pantry and bar, instead exudes liveliness. “I wanted to multiply the level of joy, fun and color,” says designer Joy Williams, who did just that by lavishing the space with her signature use of vibrant color, specifically, an electric periwinkle shade which was selected for the room’s cabinetry and repeated in the wave-print wallpaper, a nautical nod to the home’s Cape Cod-style architecture. A sense of history is also prevalent with decorations intended to pay tribute to the past, including a collection of custom-designed pottery pieces, whose textured design was inspired by African tribal markings. A classic jute rug and gold-tone hardware provide warm counterpoints to the room’s cool hues, adding yet another seafaring element to this bright, cheery space. —Jennifer Boles

POOL BATH & LAUNDRY ROOM With her rooms located adjacent to the pool, Jenna Gross sought to imbue her space with tropical, summertime vibes reminiscent of Palm Beach, Harbor Island and even Slim Aarons’ iconic resort photography. “I love that this home’s architectural design, landscaping, layout and colors all suggest a vacation home,” says Gross. “This really freed me up to have a lot of fun with my design.” To brighten up the space and complement the existing dark-tone cabinetry, Gross indulged in snappy pattern and the color pink, especially in the laundry space, where palm-tree print wallpaper mixes with coral pink ceiling paper. Beach-inspired accents include the window’s custom-made fringed cornice, which was designed in the style of a vintage beach umbrella, and accessories, such as a rattan table lamp and decorative coral objects. The pool bathroom is equally as playful with exuberant dragon-print wallpaper, a whimsically shaped mirror and a statement tile in the shower. —Jennifer Boles 91

ARCHITECTURE, BUILD & LANDSCAPE The design-build team invited showhouse visitors to experience a joyful 9,300-square-foot residence inspired by homes in Massachusetts’ Nantucket and Wyoming’s Jackson Hole. “We embraced happiness and livability,” says builder Kattia Easterly of Evercraft. Creativity is evident in color choices from the classic navy blue and white exterior to vibrant blues, purples and greens in the interior design. They celebrated the charm of the New England shingle-style house while taking cues from the angular western landscape for the peaks and faceted details, says architect Linda MacArthur. Diamond cutouts on the gated porte cochere—accessed by a cobblestone drive—and balustrades echo motifs in New England fences.

The rectangular pool, outdoor raised terrace, covered porch, event lawn and firepit area create a cohesive entertainment area, and a lower yard offers additional porch and play space. “The backyard is built for parties,” says Lucinda Bray of Floralis. Her chevron pattern in the artificial turf and fluted containers pay homage to the architecture, and the pool’s navy blue tile nods to the exterior. Set in Buckhead’s Kingswood neighborhood, the floor plan across the four levels—including a junior primary suite on the second floor and an elevator—is designed for multigenerational living. “I do feel like there was a really unique symbiotic relationship with this being an all-woman team,” says Easterly. “We came up with this really great house that is fresh, happy and approachable.”—Lori Johnston

COVERED PORCH Dubbed the “Daydreamer’s Den” by its designer, Heather McKeown, the covered porch is a spot for unwinding and entertaining that blends the rugged, earthy style of Wyoming’s Jackson Hole with a traditional Cape Cod aesthetic. “I aimed to imbibe the room with an alchemy of styles that both comfort and delight.” Nods to the West include cowhide rugs, sheepskin and an abundance of warm woods, while patterned rugs and floor pillows, hydrangea-blue accents and teak chairs upholstered in patched sail cloth lend some East Coast personality. Furnishings adapted from natural materials are also present, such as a pair of liveedge, walnut slab swings and a fossilized clamshell side table, while other examples are contemporary interpretations, like a burnished silver branch chandelier, which strikes a polished note. The focal point of the space, however, can be found above the fireplace mantel, where a large photograph of a woman relaxing outdoors reflects the space’s laid-back mood. —Jennifer Boles 97

FAMILY/LIVING ROOM Designer Ashley Gilbreath, a mom of three, instantly connected with her room’s role as a social hub. The views through the bifold doors cued a palette of cool blues and vibrant greens, and served as the impetus for earthy and organic textures. Creating the perfect hangout started with a versatile layout for easy flow in and out and furniture groupings for games or cocktails. The room’s size spurred Gilbreath to go big with furnishings, art and lighting that blend modern and traditional. “We needed large pieces to really help balance the scale and the drama of the space,” she says. On the walls, Schumacher’s updated take on a traditional damask wallcovering provides dimension. Abstract artwork by Kayce Hughes above the brass mantel surround and an oversize paper lantern light fixture bring on the drama. FOYER Because the house’s exterior architecture reminded her of a Nantucket home, Kristan Moore set out to “bring the New England coast into the foyer,” but instead of taking her color cue from the water, she focused on the colors of the sun and sand. “The pink tones pull in elements from the sea—shells, sand and sunset hues, while the purples speak to New England’s moody days,” says Moore. Cloud-pattern wallpaper used on the ceiling enhances the jewel-box coastal landscape, as does a ceiling fixture that is reminiscent of clouds. In keeping with the room’s atmospheric feel, furnishings are mostly bleach-tone, such as the gesso white scroll console table, a white mirror whose frame is reminiscent of weathered shells, and an organic-looking upholstered ottoman. Chosen to add texture and visual interest, the space’s artwork is an inspired mix of three-dimensional floral pieces, which are evocative of the trellis-climbing roses often seen in Nantucket, and framed geometrical abstracts. —Jennifer Boles 100

OFFICE & MUDROOM Envisioning a space for conversation and connection, Jason Mitchell reimagined the office as a posh parlor. “I wanted a space to get inspired,” he says, “a place to relax, rethink and refocus.”A woven wallcovering with a water lily motif establishes a cozy backdrop for an eclectic mix of 1940s to 1970s-era furnishings commingled with contemporary pieces and artwork. “Natural elements soften and ground the room,” he explains. Indeed, paired with a contemporary olive desk staged with small artworks, a sculptural carved wooden chair with curvaceous legs and a tapered totem-like back acts as a conversation piece. And a brass side table with a hand-carved top pairs effortlessly with a chrome bench covered in a dynamic black and white fabric. Softened by Venetian plaster walls, the black and white palette flows into the adjacent mudroom, which the designer staged with wall art and sculpture. “It’s all about layering,” he says, summing up his design philosophy in three simple words: “More is more.” —Tate Gunnerson

GENTLEMAN’S LOUNGE Don Easterling and Nina Long, known for their use of florals and chinoiseries, were enchanted by a scenic wallcovering from a land far away. The wallpaper by Iksel for Schumacher depicts the Bosphorus, a significant strait that helps form the boundary between Asia and Europe. An Instagram deep dive into Turkish design revealed Ottoman-era palaces and Victorian and European architecture. “We loved the history of this magical place,” says Long. For a collected look that balances masculinity and femininity, they layered antiques such as an English secretary and urns from France, textiles such as hand-blocked pillows, and pieces with caning and bone inlay. A wood ceiling, soft upholstery, white furnishings and decor—including an oversize mirror with painted gold details—lighten the intimate gentleman’s lounge. “So many details and elements made it special enough to be showhouse-worthy, but it’s also a room that you would feel comfortable in at your own home,” says Easterling. —Lori Johnston

PRIMARY BEDROOM Once Tish Mills Kirk saw the antique doors leading into the primary suite, the showhouse’s honorary chair channeled New York’s Upper East Side. Zoffany’s Tyndall Vine wallcovering, the white Venetian plaster ceiling and marigold drapery are key players. “I wanted to show the roaring ’20s of design—now, for us—by incorporating a lot of pattern, color, texture and personality in this room, but show that it can still be really serene,” she says. Inspired by the canopy of trees in Central Park, the designer enveloped the room with leaves, starting with the delicate, versatile wallcovering. “It’s got this beautiful iridescence that adds to the romance and sexiness of it,” she says. Leaves cascade from the Niermann Weeks chandelier to the bed drapery and the Peacock Alley bedskirt. Mindful of New York’s cosmopolitan character, a photograph shot in Buenos Aires depicts life on the outside while cocooned in the bedroom. —Lori Johnston 105

HIS-AND-HER BATHS & CLOSETS A corner window stirred Jena Salmon’s design vision for a soft, feminine “her” bathroom. “I kept on seeing pinks, pale greens and blues in my head,” says the designer, known for her impeccable sense of color. The tones in Anna French’s Paxton wallcovering for Thibaut—a fresh take on butterflies—fit with Salmon’s “keep it pretty” mantra, accented by petal-inspired sconces. “The crystals made that whole space come together,” she says. An antique mirror, wicker pedestals with urns, and hints of green in the Weezie towels and lamp add to the airy aura. Steps away, a high-gloss paint in “her” closet matches the bathroom in elegant fashion. Juxtaposing the feminine details, dark and smoky features—such as marble and tile in black, gray and white—in “his” bath and closet result in classy, handsome spaces. The bathroom’s vinyl wallpaper, with the illusion of a grasscloth, adds texture. Italian cabinets in both closets are a design yin and yang in white and dusky finishes. —Lori Johnston 107

JUNIOR PRIMARY BEDROOM & BATH Situated at the end of the hallway, the junior primary suite bestowed a gift to Kim Regas: 16-foot ceilings and a windowfilled wall to match. The designer turned draperies with a Thibaut print of vertical stripes and pheasants into the focal point, which, along with the canopy bed, accentuates the room’s scale. “I wanted it to be woodsy but sexy,” says Regas. Mohair club chairs from UpCountry Home suggest the outdoors with an upscale vein. Neutral walls showcase artwork with a meditative mood, such as Steven Seinberg’s painting that features the hues of dusk. Although Regas tends to use warmer wall tones, she allowed the furnishings and paintings by local artists to infuse color into the peaceful environment. In the bathroom, an abstract play on light and dark by artist Wellon Bridgers overlays a Chelsea House screen with metallic details around the tub. Acrylic and gold decor allows the lines of the tile and wallpaper to shine. —Lori Johnston

THIRD FLOOR LOFT In what could easily be an overlooked area, interior designer Michele Johnson created a destination of sorts—one with dark walls and an eclectic collection of furnishings that foster a moody, collected milieu. “I love mixing things from different eras, because that’s how life actually works,” she says. “These are like their prized possessions that they couldn’t let go of and they may not have worked anywhere else.” In the center of the space, for example, a brass and glass globe pendant hangs over a round stone-top table with hand-forged iron legs. An antique Napoleon writing desk and Turkish runners add to the mélange. Plush seating includes a pair of velvet tête-à-tête sofas and a couch-like window seat. “It feels like you’re in a completely different space,” says Johnson, “a place to get away from the norm and listen to music, be creative or even just lazy.” —Tate Gunnerson

BEDROOM & BATH Stephanie Jarvis approaches interior design projects from a collector’s point of view. “I prefer to start with found items and let them all speak to each other,” she says. “I love placing a beautiful light fixture next to an 18th-century-style bed next to a bold, modern painting.” In this case, the launching point was a “lit à la Polonaise” canopy bed, which she draped with a soft blue and white floral-patterned fabric reminiscent of a toile. The same fabric covers the walls and it’s also used for the draperies. “Even though it’s incredibly busy, it comes across as a very quiet, soothing space,” says Jarvis. A Moroccan rug in the same colorway adds another layer. As do contemporary pieces, which include a handmade plaster ceiling light and a cozy lounge chair paired with a spherical ottoman in white bouclé and pink suede. “It’s a little bit cheeky and adds a touch of whimsy,” she says. The palette flows into the bath, where a light blue woven wallcovering and faux coral wall mirror play off the existing floor tile and vanity. “The spaces are definitely feminine, but nothing feels too girly,” she says. “A bedroom suite should be a sanctuary. It should be memorable and it should make you feel special.” —Tate Gunnerson

BEDROOM & BATH Not every young boy exalts team sports and superheroes, says interior designer Whitney Durham, who envisioned a pair of brothers with more sophisticated leanings when designing the second-floor bedroom suite. “They are into the outdoors and hunting but also fine art,” she says. A tan and white faux bois wallcovering references the outdoors while acting as a neutral backdrop for a lively mix of boisterous patterns and colors. The twin beds, for example, are upholstered with a stylized tiger-print fabric. On each, a colorful silk throw pillow depicting animals and flowers plays off the vibrant patterned cornice board, drum chandelier and Turkish area rugs. The designer also painted the window trim in a soft shade of green inspired by the geometric floor tile in the adjacent bathroom, where a 1970s-era mirror with a whimsical scalloped edge adds a pleasing pop of black and white—one of Durham’s signatures. “[The palette] is timeless and a little edgy,” she explains. The result can be enjoyed by parents as much as the children, and that’s the idea. “It’s kind of worldly but still masculine,” summarizes Durham. “A room they can grow with until they move out of the house.” —Tate Gunnerson 114

UPSTAIRS SITTING ROOM & HALLWAY Envisioned as an evening hideaway where one can read, sketch or simply enjoy a glass of wine, the upstairs sitting room was designed to reflect the home’s architecture. “It’s a beautiful mixture of tradition with a modern twist,” according to Lathem Gordon, who relished the opportunity to partner antiques with modern silhouettes, such as the classic English chest and round mahogany table that are joined by a Panton chair. Equally fresh is the room’s color palette of moody greens and vibrant coral, which were chosen to reflect the spring season. The room’s highlight, however, is a charming upholstered window seat niche, whose flanking coral-color draperies and valance make it feel like a room within a room. Doing double duty as a gallery to showcase artwork, the adjoining hallway is outfitted with a brass gallery rail, from which an eclectic mix is displayed, including 19th-century landscapes, antique portraits and contemporary paintings. —Jennifer Boles 116

BEDROOM, BATH & LAUNDRY ROOM A space for rest, reflection and getting ready for a night on the town, the guest bedroom was designed with an ultrachic woman in mind. Going back to her roots as a textile designer, Coley Hull created the room’s primary fabric after discovering a set of vintage botanical prints. “They were classic but had the perfect amount of edge,” which could just as easily describe Hull’s use of her botanical-pattern fabric on almost every available surface, including the walls and ceiling, headboard, chairs, pillows and even bedside tables that serve double duty as desks. Working with a soothing color palette, the designer chose modest-size furniture, such as slipper chairs, in order to accommodate several seating areas throughout the room, including an upholstered window nook. The botanical references continue into the nearby laundry room, where snappy leaf-green cabinetry and woven rattan furnishings, including a vintage console and mirror, create a lively space for taking care of household chores. —Jennifer Boles

STAIR HALL & DOWNSTAIRS LANDING Described by designer Theresa Ory as a “beautiful beast,” a custom 30-foot chandelier with 22 champagne-tinted handblown bulbs cascades down the three-story space between the grand open staircase and an entire wall of windows in the stair hall, hovering just over a custom quartzite table on the lower level. “It’s simultaneously grand and soothing,” she says, noting the filament is based on the repeating Fibonacci sequence that is so ubiquitous in the natural world. “I wanted this space to feel elegant but elemental.” To that end, she also commissioned a number of artworks for the space. Organic concrete pieces rendered in complementary textures, for example, adorn the stairway’s walls. And a series of abstract paintings enliven the landing, where hide rugs anchor a sculptural sling back chair covered in hair on hide. A moss ball adds another layer. “It feels intimate and alluring at the same time,” she says. “I love to celebrate craftsmanship and custom pieces.” —Tate Gunnerson 121

LOWER COVERED DECK Inspired by travel to faraway places, the lower covered deck is both a destination and an escape. “We wanted to push the envelope and make it feel like an outdoor living room complete with all the components that make an indoor space feel so cozy and comfortable,” says Amanda Khouri. The duo created the room’s tented look by draping walls in pinstripe fabric and amplifying the illusion with an exotic-looking valance and decoratively painted ceiling, an altogether dramatic effect which gives the impression of a Moroccan riad. An Indianpattern fabric, used to both curtain the room’s open-air entrances and cover a rattan banquette, adds to the room’s wanderlust, as does an antique Egyptian inlay table and an embroidered suzani. Relaxation is guaranteed thanks to a restful, neutral color palette and ample seating, while contemporary art, antique klismos chairs and other worldly accessories round-out the room’s globe-trotting mix. —Jennifer Boles 122

GAME ROOM & BAR Taking inspiration from 1940s female jazz singers such as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, designer Lizz McKay transformed the terrace-level living area into a game room with a decidedly feminine mystique. “Those women paved the road for all that we’re doing now, and we gave power and voice to that,” she says. Despite the space’s lack of natural daylight, McKay had the walls painted in a dark hue balanced by curvaceous Deco-inspired pieces in lighter shades. “[The wall color] reflects the strength that women show every day,” says McKay. “Everything else is softer, lighter and a little sparkly.” An alabaster Ping-Pong table with pink accents, for example, coordinates with the felt top on the Deco-style bumper pool table, as well as the carpet tiles and abstract artwork. A rounded Chicago shuffleboard continues the fun. A pair of olive barrel-back chairs offer a spot to enjoy cocktails and conversation while listening to an old-timey jukebox. “In a technologically advanced society that’s always moving forward, the analog can’t be forgotten,” she says. “This is an escape where people can have fun and reconnect.” —Tate Gunnerson
