FROM THE ARCHIVES Celebrating AH&L’s 40th anniversary year
the art of living SUMMER IS WINDING DOWN and the excitement for a new season is starting to build. This is one of my favorite times of year, where nesting mode engages and I take a close look at my home— and how it makes me feel—in preparation of the cooler months ahead. I added a new bookshelf this summer that I’m slowly curating items to style with, and I’m also on a color craze as of late, spending hours scouring Instagram, Pinterest and design publications for ideas to liven up my home with. And perhaps I’m biased, but as we produced this issue, I kept earmarking pages from our 2023 Southeastern Designer Showhouse highlights (page 74). Heads were certainly on a swivel at the 8,500-square-foot home in Buckhead, where soft curves and organic architectural details were a dramatic blank slate for participating designers who all brought their A-game. Designed by Benecki

Homes, William T. Baker & Associates, Land Plus Associates and Source, style inspiration abounded for any taste, from the delicate and whimsical to the bold and bodacious. Also inside: I had the honor of speaking with Historical Concepts founder Jim Strickland about receiving the ICAA 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award (page 18), and it’s a conversation I’m still talking about weeks later. As Jim recounted stories from his past that led him to winning this prestigious award, it felt like a movie reel was playing in my head—scenes filled with unexpected but impressive particularly inspired, as do most after they speak with Jim. And while his Historical Concepts colleagues carry the torch of his legacy day in and day out, may we all continue to uphold Jim’s enthusiasm for timeless Southern design for years to come. On the Rise The Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) has welcomed a handful of showrooms in the last year, but taking the industry by storm is furniture, lighting and textile brand WARECO. RECOGNIZED FOR HIS architectural excellence with a keen eye for historic precedent, Jim Strickland—founder of award-winning architecture firm Historical Concepts and the 2023 recipient of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s (ICAA) Lifetime Achievement Award—is a household name in Atlanta and beyond. And with more than 40 years in the industry, Strickland’s influence largely set the standard for tailored, traditional homes that stand the test of time. A Yale alumnus, Strickland has a storied career, from his start in real estate development in Florida to the publishing of his Savannah Tidewater Series, a collection of plans created as an ode to the historic homes that influenced his passion for buildings with permanence. With the launch of his firm in 1982, Strickland’s work cast a spotlight back on livable Southern elegance. Today, Historical Concepts is coveted for designing characterrich homes and communities that span far past Georgia. And while it’s easy to list Strickland’s many accolades, what holds most impressive is his sharp, tenacious spirit and his unwavering commitment to gracious Southern design. “Jim is just a font of knowledge,” says Don Hooten of Hooten Land Design, who has worked with Strickland for almost the entirety of his career. “He’s

an absolute talent and a purveyor for classic design. And when you look at the people who work with him and how long they’ve been around, it’s a testament to his unparalleled enthusiasm and care for others.” A team-centered mindset is the common denominator in Strickland’s work, often spending more time crediting those who have helped him along the way than speaking of his own accomplishments. For example, the countless professors who contributed to his winding journey through school at the University of Georgia and Yale University—including Professor Ronald Arnholm, Strickland’s graphic design professor, who encouraged him to apply to Yale and thus began the domino effect of his achievements. Of course, there are his Historical Concepts colleagues—referencing everyone from the earliest team members to the current interns—who lift the firm to new heights, and other industry professionals that have given him a new perspective on design. But perhaps most important, notes Strickland, is his wife, Linda. From helping him get through school, to mapping out business ventures on their kitchen floor, drawing his early developments and more, Linda is a major player in Strickland’s success. “As you go through life, there are certain folks who are really influential that aren’t necessarily mentors, but still influence your path,” says Strickland. “All of my professors and countless colleagues throughout my life are my influencers, but my true mentor has always been my wife. She’s my secret weapon.” And should anyone be fortunate enough to sit down with Strickland, it’s likely he’ll reference the children’s book The King with Six Friends. Following the story of a lonesome king that won his kingdom thanks to the combined skills of himself and the friends who joined his journey, this story paints a picture of what life and career moments brought Strickland to win this prestigious award—with the nucleus being the people who walked beside him along the way. “In truth, this award—which I’m so flattered by—is not just about my achievement, but the achievement of many people,” says Strickland. “The little king couldn’t have created a better story.” historicalconcepts.com

Little Rey and Fadó Irish Pub have also announced plans to open at Medley, which will be the first suburban outposts for both brands. The project’s 900-unit residential component will be equally high-end, comprised of both luxury apartments and 133 brownstones. “As we learned with Avalon, people are willing to pay a premium for luxury apartments that are immersed within a vibrant mixed-use community,” says Toro. Scheduled to break ground later this year, Medley’s first phase is expected to open third quarter of 2025.

SWEET HOME ALABAMA Lake Martin, one of Alabama’s most desirable locations for primary and secondary homes, will soon become even more enticing with the addition of THE BENJAMIN LAKE CLUB, the lake’s only multiuse waterfront lake club. Currently under construction, the club will be located within The Heritage, a 1,500-acre residential development that will consist of approximately 250 waterfront and 150 water-access properties. Developed by RUSSELL LANDS, The Heritage is already home to the private Wicker Point Golf Club and its Coore & Crenshaw-designed golf course, the first to be built in the state. The Benjamin, which is being designed by Atlanta-based architecture firm COOPER CARRY, will cater exclusively to homeowners in The Heritage. “The addition of The Benjamin to the community will provide families and friends who own in The Heritage a place to have fun and unwind with an assortment of amenities at a

Atlanta-based TORO DEVELOPMENT COMPANY, whose leadership team was behind the successful Avalon development during their tenure at North American Properties Atlanta, is bringing its community-building expertise to Johns Creek with a new mixed-use development known as MEDLEY. The 43-acre project won unanimous rezoning approval from the Johns Creek City Council earlier this year, the first to be approved as part of the city’s Town Center Vision and Plan, which sets guidelines for the redevelopment of the 192-acre area surrounding City Hall. According to MARK TORO, principal and chief vision officer of Toro Development, Johns Creek is particularly suited to the company’s plans for Medley, which will include 200,000 square feet of dedicated retail, dining and entertainment space as well as 110,000 square feet of office space.

Naomi Von Habersham THE CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY in Atlanta right now is making me dizzy and disoriented. Everywhere I look, there are cranes dotting the skyline, while down on the ground, major roads are frequently blocked to accommodate development projects. And what about all of the buildings and houses that are here one day and gone the next?! I’m finding all of these changes unsettling, because at my age, I don’t accept change very well. The only way I’m able to cope is to seek solace in Atlanta traditions, like visiting The Varsity for chili dogs and fried peach pies. Unfortunately, I can’t seek comfort there very often, because doing so would positively wreck my figure, but when I do venture there, it’s like stepping back in time. It reminds me of when Atlanta was a quaint big city and you could drive from West Paces Ferry to Lenox Square in less than five minutes during late afternoons and evenings. Try doing that these days. I’m also enjoying watching movies once again at the Tara theater. I was heartbroken when it closed, because it was yet another Atlanta institution that had bitten the dust. But thanks to new ownership, Tara is open for business once again. In the past few months, I’ve taken some shoes to be shined at Bennie’s, had the Swan’s Favorite for lunch at the Swan Coach House and spent the day soaking in local history at the Atlanta History Center— all places that I’ve frequented for many decades. I even drove out of my way to get my Covid-19 booster shot at Wender & Roberts Pharmacy, which dates all the way back to 1918. Don’t get me wrong, there are all kinds of wonderful new and recent additions to our city’s business and cultural landscapes, for which we should be grateful. But moving forward, I’m going to make an extra effort to support those businesses and organizations that have deep roots and long histories here in Atlanta. Doing so will (hopefully) help to ensure that our city’s past is not completely obliterated. Care to join me?

LOOK NO FURTHER FOR your next evening soirée. Art aficionados and culinary connoisseurs alike will be dazzled by the highly anticipated new private dining room at Buckhead Japanese restaurant Umi. Named The Murphy Room in honor of prolific artist Todd Murphy, the design stimulus for the space’s moody and sophisticated setting surrounds the artist’s 1994 painting The Swimmer. “In partnership with designer Tom Dixon and his team, we designed the space with elegance, decadence and refinement in mind,” says Umi co-owner Farshid Arshid, who also worked with Dixon on the restaurant’s high-profile cocktail lounge, Himitsu. “The interiors, combined with a curated wine and sake list, a best-in-class cocktail program and myriad of exquisite dishes from Umi’s kitchen and sushi bar makes every gathering in the space feel exceptional.” With both Arshid’s and Dixon’s visions woven into the brand’s overall identity, it was an obvious choice to tap the designer again to assist with the new space. “We were skeptical a few years ago with Farshid’s original brief on Himitsu, which incorporated a Todd Murphy painting as the departure point,” says Dixon. “We subsequently realized that it is actually a brilliant way to design spaces—art first. We learned a lot from that project and it made sense to continue along the same vein.” When guests make a reservation for The Murphy Room, they are escorted up a sleek, custom-designed staircase leading into the private space. To harmonize the rest of the interiors with the painting, Arshid commissioned a black wavy mirrored

A LETTER FROM
SERENBE’S FOUNDER Steve Nygren
When the first residents moved to Serenbe 18 years ago, we had the full community design on paper and only a few houses built, yet I could already see what Serenbe would look like once completed. I could see how the winding country roads would connect our family’s first home in Chatt Hills—now The Inn and Farmhouse restaurant—to all the neighborhoods. I could see the varied styles of homes with welcoming porches clustered closely together among the woods and how we would preserve as much of the land as possible. I realize now that my years in hospitality running the Pleasant Peasant Group—where I brought people together over good food in beautiful spaces—informs my current work and what many now call “community placemaking.” Food and hospitality have always been at the forefront of everything I do—our country home became a bed and breakfast then an Inn, and we offered guests dinner then weekend fried chicken lunches that turned into The Farmhouse restaurant. Growing fresh local food is an integral part of the vision. “Agrihood” wasn’t a term when we planned an organic farm in the community, but we believed in farmers and connecting people to the natural food systems. We even integrated edible and medicinal landscapes into the neighborhoods so you’ll find blueberry bushes at the crosswalks and fig and apple trees along the sidewalks. You may know us for our extensive cultural events, staying at The Inn, dining at one of our restaurants or maybe you’ve read about us in a magazine or newspaper or listened to our podcast, Serenbe Stories. The 15-plus years we’ve spent in this beautiful community we call home have flown by, but underneath the beauty of Serenbe there is deep substance and larger purpose. We have created a biophilic model of how to build with nature rather than against it. Our purpose is to develop in balance with the planet by connecting people with nature and each other. We do that in many ways but it starts with our respect for the land, the climate, and our neighbors. The buildings and the sidewalks, the sustainable practices, the preserved nature trails are all important features that form the foundation for this place we call Serenbe. The people and personal connections energize those spaces making this a special place where waving to neighbors and strangers alike is commonplace. People tell me ‘to be touched by Serenbe is to be changed forever.’ But I know, it’s the collective spirit of the people who make Serenbe a true community. THE ARTS AT SERENBE
Serenbe is a community that passionately explores, embraces and expands the connections between nature, culture and the art of living. Multiple arts programs at Serenbe have been built out of intention and have grown organically over the years. The ART FARM is our non-profit platform and place for cultivating artists and the arts through music, film, dance, and theatre programming, artist residencies, workshops, and public art projects, and it has been a literal platform for dinners, performances and artist celebrations. One aspect of the Art Farm are artist residency cottages designed by the awardwinning Rural Studio architecture program. These cottages promote the creative process by providing artists from all backgrounds uninterrupted time and space, and a welcoming community in which to create. Hundreds of artists have stayed and been supported through residencies over the years. You’ll also find art in the meadows of Serenbe where ballets and plays have been performed, films are shown, and the Atlanta Symphony honored us during the pandemic with a safely distanced two nights of magical performances. Serenbe also provides a forum for dialogue, cultural presentations, workshops and seminars for residents, neighbors and visitors to interact with cultural and environmental thought leaders and eminent scholars. HONORARY SHOWHOUSE CHAIR & ART FARM PUBLIC ARTS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS COUNCIL CHAIR
GEMMIE DAYRIT GEMMIE DAYRIT spent her childhood in the Philippines, Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States, leading to a fascination with culture, love of travel and curiosity about the world. She founded her own company that runs and manages exhibition retail operations—work that led to a number of exciting life experiences, including a visit to the Titanic wreck site in the the North Atlantic. She was also part of the team that launched the ArtScience Museum in Marina Bay Sands Singapore, and was involved with many projects associated with the venue. Gemmie ended her nomadic lifestyle when she found her home in Serenbe. She is an active member of the Art Farm and is chair of Public Arts and Special Projects, fusing her personal inspirations with her work expertise. This council was created to provide unforgettable adventures where inspiration is ever-present. As Gemmie says, “[Their] aim is to disarm your ordinary day with artistic alchemy and reward curiosity.”
ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY
ARTS FELLOWSHIP
The DECORATIVE ARTS FELLOWSHIP invites an artist in their early-to-mid career to feature their work in the Serenbe Designer Showhouse. The artist will make objects for the interiors of buildings and/or interior design—including textiles, furniture, lighting, ceramics, metalware, and fine arts—and be chosen in partnership with the editorial staff of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine and Serenbe. The 2023 recipient of the Decorative Arts Fellowship is THOMAS JACKSON, who installed multiple temporary pieces in the woods to photograph while in residency at The Art Farm cottages in partnership with Jackson Fine Art. Thomas Jackson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up in Providence, Rhode Island. After earning a B.A. in History from the College of Wooster, he spent his early career in New York City working in book publishing, then as an editor and writer at Forbes Life magazine. An interest in photography books eventually led him to pick up a camera, shooting Garry Winogrand-inspired street scenes, then landscapes, and finally the installation work he does today. A self-taught artist (with the exception of a number of classes at the International Center of Photography in New York), Jackson has pioneered a unique working process that combines landscape photography, sculpture and kinetic art. His work has been shown widely, including at The Photography Show (AIPAD) in New York, the Center for Contemporary Arts in Sante Fe and the Bolinas Museum in Bolinas, CA. Jackson was named one of the Critical Mass Top 50 in 2012, won the “installation/ still-life” category of PDN’s The Curator award in 2013 and earned second place in CENTER’s Curator’s Choice Award in 2014. He lives in Pennsylvania.

Floralis Garden Design is a landscape architecture and garden design firm founded by Lucinda Bray that serves Atlanta and its surrounding areas. Upon entering the Southeastern Designer Showhouse, globe sconces affixed with hand-cast bronze butterflies flank the arched entrance between the foyer and intimate study, which is painted in a glossy pinkish lavender hue punctuated by horizontal brass reveals. “We wanted something unusual, different and more feminine than your typical study,” says interior designer Kelly Wolf-Anthony, who served as honorary chair alongside her restaurateur husband, Justin Anthony. Indeed, a long, low-slung linen-covered sofa with a pleated skirt and a pair of curvaceous chairs in complementary neutral fabrics create a cozy conversation area. “Because the room is a box and the reveals are hard and lineal, we wanted the furniture to have soft, feminine curves,” says WolfAnthony. A woven chandelier in a burnt orange hue adds “a bit of juxtaposition and unexpectedness,” she says. That’s also the case for the dark elements throughout, which include a round cocktail table with a smoked-glass top and a bespoke bar cart underneath a modern oil painting rendered in a dark, monochromatic palette. “Without those elements, the room might feel too fluffy,” she says. “This reinforces that while it’s soft and feminine, it’s not just cotton candy.” —Tate Gunnerson

Designer Whitney Ray balanced the tailored dining room with character-driven pieces, starting at the dramatic quartz crystal chandelier. “The way that the light filters through the crystals is so beautiful,” she says. The oversize brass chandelier and tall Venetian plaster ceiling stirred her to create a gallery wall inspired by a recent trip to Rome. She took a modern approach to the displays she saw in century-old Italian villas with clean lines and pieces that evoked a soulful feel. “Our dining room design reflects an artistic approach, not only in the wall art, but also in the detail of the rug and the abstract take of a traditional dining table and chairs,” says the designer. The restrained neutral scheme is accented with deep purple fabric on the velvet skirted dining chairs and silk seats on the antique chairs. Above the slim, shagreen-covered console, photographer Bastiaan Woudt’s large-scale portrait of a woman provides another powerful moment. —Lori Johnston

Kitchen & Butler’s Pantry Inspired by traditional European designs, Natalia Makarova of Karpaty selected a mix of
eucalyptus and quarter-sawn oak cabinetry accented by veiny Calacatta Viola honed marble countertops for the showhouse kitchen and butler’s pantry. Selected in collaboration with Source, the same white marble borders the dark limestone flooring and the lowerthird of the Venetian plaster-coated walls. “We used materials that had a lot of age and weight,” says Makarova. Calacatta viola marble countertops likewise adorn the sleek white cabinets in the galley-like butler’s pantry, which features a curved ceiling. Those curves flow into the kitchen, which spotlights a generously proportioned arched window system, barrel-vault ceiling and a long eucalyptus island with rounded edges. The perimeter cabinetry, meanwhile, boasts a fluted motif that juxtaposes those curves. “We added a bit of texture and play, so the flat doors don’t look too clean,” she says. Housed in a marble-lined niche and paired with a custom reclaimed wooden table with a live edge, the built-in banquette seating is likewise covered in a textural alpaca fabric, which fosters a sense of warmth despite the many hard surfaces. “Softening those edges makes it feel more comfortable,” she says. “This is a place where people will spend time together and create amazing memories.” —Tate Gunnerson

When Katie Kirby saw the architectural plan for her spaces, she says that her vision was sparked by the rooms’ hardwood floors and marble finishes, particularly the Calacatta Viola and Shakespeare Gray tiles which clad the laundry room’s walls and ceiling. “The veins in the marble inspired me to create a color palette through the space using Farrow & Ball’s Brinjal.” The aubergine paint plays a prominent role in the informal powder room, where it stars as the principal color in the room’s handpainted mural. For the mudroom, the designer selected a dramatically veined wallcovering to give the space movement, partnering it with an abstract painting and a bronze and mohair bench. A different kind of movement occurs in the nearby desk area, where Kirby added an oversized faceted mirror above the console to “create different compositions with every step.” —Jennifer Boles

The salon’s floor-to-ceiling fireplace reminded Michael Habachy of the ancient columns he saw while visiting the ruins of Luxor. Embracing his Coptic Egyptian heritage, he ran with the theme. “Egyptian Revival was a design movement that reflected luxury and exuberance from an ancient age of power and elaborate treasures,” he says. “I felt a calling to reinterpret it—to make it more approachable, softer and more livable.” Playing off the home’s blend of Art Deco and Moderne influences, a curvaceous sofa that echoes the shape of the fireplace anchors a convivial seating area that includes pieces covered in jacquards, carved velvets and printed linens. “These textiles draw on the patterns and designs from ancient, preserved works, but they have been reinterpreted with more of a contemporary and graphic feel,” he says. Bespoke pieces likewise elevate the space. Inspired by native Egyptian plants such as papyrus and lotus flowers, Habachy commissioned a blackened steel-and-bronze fireplace screen with a handforged papyrus motif. And a pyramid complex in Egypt inspired a monolithic console table covered in hand-applied plaster to replicate the look of stone. “I took my inspiration from the age-old ruins and weathered temples,” he says. “This space transports people, and that was my goal.” —Tate Gunnerson

Upper Terrace & Pool Deck To celebrate the art of relaxing and hosting, designer Shelby Adamson of Little Black
Fox created a distinctive outdoor area filled with foliage and furnishings that mirrors the beauty of the interiors. Adamson selected seating with textural appeal and striking silhouettes, such as the chunky, knit wovens of Ratana’s Bogota Collection, wingback-style Hatteras chairs and curvy dining chairs. “This is one of the most beautiful showhouses I’ve seen,” she says. “I wanted it to hold its own with that and complement the home.” Adamson’s love of texture is evident in the plaster accent tables, tall planters and taper candleholders. Inspired by contemporary botanical artist Fiona Strickland, the designer paired the darker hues of the furnishings with merlot and peach in the pillows and florals, such as succulents and Japanese maples. “I wanted to match the refined aesthetic of the home, but also add a bit of whimsy in the color palette,” says Adamson. —Lori Johnston

When Melanie Turner discovered Schumacher’s whimsical jungle-print wallcovering, she knew instantly that it would serve as the starting point for her room’s vibrant design— particularly its spring-like color palette. “Sherbets, cantaloupes, blues and neutrals are intense enough to define the space without overpowering it,” says Turner. Melon-hued curtains and window shades, a zesty citrus-colored upholstered bench and splashy blue artwork complement the wallpaper while also enhancing the room’s personality. The designer gravitated to organic materials, such as a jute rug and a woven chandelier in the style of a flowering tropical plant, not unlike those depicted on the surrounding wallpaper. Describing the overall look of her room as “a preppy, inviting, transitional space,” Turner put a modern spin by introducing a curated selection of contemporary artwork and furniture, including sculpted metal side chairs and a sleek white credenza with carved front. —Jennifer Boles 91

Primary Bathroom, Closets & Formal Powder Room Playing off the sweeping curves and arches throughout
the home, Source carried the home’s subtle Art Nouveau theme into the primary bathroom, his and her closets and formal powder room. “We wanted to push the limits of the Atlanta design scene,” says co-owner Cydney Mitchell. Aptly named for its web-like veining, Golden Spider marble distinguishes the flooring and dual vanities in the primary bathroom, which flank a sculptural soaker tub. The flooring flows into a spacious stand-alone shower, which is housed in an arched niche. “It kind of envelops you like a hug,” says Mitchell. There, a glass tile mosaic depicting tree branches and autumnal leaves is an ideal complement to the view from the single round window overlooking the verdant lawn. A segmented barrel-vaulted ceiling likewise softens the wife’s closet, which boasts matte-finished Venetian plaster walls tinted in a reddish hue. Similarly, in the formal powder room, a mix of Dry Rose marble and champagne-colored limestone dramatically covers the floor, walls and ceiling. “We pushed the boundaries, and the details all complement one another,” says co-owner Brittany Stafford. “It’s like a curated puzzle that came together nicely.” —Tate Gunnerson 92

Stair Halls, Upstairs Pet Spa & Art Studio Art defines Evan Millárd’s rooms, which have all
been recast as gallery-like spaces. The stair hall features an inspired mix of artwork, including jewel-toned paintings, photographic works and a vine-like wall sculpture that was fashioned from repurposed tuxedos. Using a black-andwhite color palette as the backbone of his overall design, the designer accented the stair landing with graphic details, such as framed ink-on-paper works and a zebraprint window shade. The laundry room, which now serves as a pet spa, is appointed similarly, with black-and-white photographs of French Bulldogs—his Sophia Marie and a friend’s Georgie Pearl—and a patterned rug. For the linen room, Millárd did the unexpected by turning it into an artist’s studio, explaining, “I really wanted to transform my spaces into ones that caused guests to stop and take in the beauty of each one.” Basking in natural light and an assemblage of colorful paintings by artist Daniel Zimmerman, the artist’s studio also features an antique farm table that doubles as a work surface. —Jennifer Boles

Sara Hillery took inspiration for her space from the rolling landscape of her home state of Virginia. The room’s light, airy color palette was drawn from the flowers that bloom in her garden during springtime, including azaleas, camellias and peonies. “These light blues and greens to lilacs and pinks lend the space an instant sense of freshness and capture the essence of the season,” says Hillery. Natural elements, like the woven ceiling fixture and a seashell-encrusted mirror, are joined by floral specimens that are displayed on wall brackets. Another source of ideas came from the designer’s travels, which prompted her use of a bone chair from India and an antique Swedish bench, one of the designer’s favorite pieces in the room. For the adjoining bathroom, Hillery took a similar approach. Framed botanical artwork, potted topiaries and a vintage mirror stand alongside modern accents and finishes, such as the geometrically patterned tile floor and sleek sink vanity. —Jennifer Boles 97

Upstairs TV Room & Hall
Designer Michele Johnson drew from the clean lines and purposeful nature of modern European design for her chic light-filled loft. “I immediately wanted it to be almost all white,” she says. Texture adds interest, with mohair, velvet, linen, bouclé, leather, concrete and plaster in the furnishings and Schumacher rug. Resisting the need to overcomplicate the space, she relied on curves in the furniture—largely collaborating with Coley Home—to soften any spareness. The room embodies the modern, timeless way in which the designer mixes classic motifs with contemporary items, such as with the shiitake ottomans and a serpent side table. Another animal element—bust mounts—are a signature in her rooms due to their sculptural quality and 3D dimension, she says. A painting by Colombian-American artist America Martin pulls in shades of pink and leads the way to the hall. Featuring an 18-foot ceiling with skylights, Hunt Slonem’s whimsical butterflies and a Tibetan tiger rug serve as a gallery-like entrance to the surrounding bedrooms. “The art is amazing,” gushes Johnson. —Lori Johnston 98

This tranquil bedroom’s design stems from the fern-print curtain fabric, whose celadon and cream coloring set the tone for the space, says its designer, Woody Yeomans. “A bedroom needs to be a place where you can relax and recharge, and I think this color palette achieves that.” Transparent furniture, such as an acrylic four-poster bed and a pair of Murano glass occasional tables, accent the space without disturbing the peace. The same goes for the room’s collection of cream-colored fabrics, accessories and furniture, including nightstands, a trio of plaster mirrors hung above the bed and a stylish vintage chair. A pale blue rug and warm metal finishes, like those on the fluted floor lamp and X-frame benches, round out the restful mix. A similarly soothing color palette can be seen in the adjoining bathroom, whose mix of finishes includes heavily veined Lilac marble, which was used inside the shower and as a floor border alongside Cinderella Gray marble. An artist in his own right, interior designer André Hilton approached the design of the guest bedroom suite as if he were painting a canvas. Eschewing a vision board, he instead employed a more freewheeling approach, selecting pieces that he says “gave me chills,” noting that each selection was akin to a brushstroke. “Artists paint with emotion, and they start with a blank canvas.” Indeed, crisp white walls foster a gallery-like backdrop for the heady mix of sumptuous furnishings and artwork he selected. A pair of tall porcelain floor lamps atop wooden side tables flank the bed that is upholstered in a rich sienna mohair. At the foot of the bed, a cowhide rug anchors a plush sofa underneath a brass three-armed chandelier. “It feels like a gallery and an upscale hotel room at the same time,” Hilton says. Artwork further enlivens the white walls. A pair of black metal sculptures, for example, appear to float over the marble-topped vanities in the en suite bathroom. For an added layer of masculinity, a vintage painting by Todd Murphy commands attention as soon as one enters the room. “The more layers an artist applies, the more interesting their piece becomes,” Hilton says of the space. “I think we’ve created something pretty wonderful.” —Tate Gunnerson 103

Bedroom & Bath Black-and-white textiles, animal prints and an affinity for pink blend in Sande Beck’s sophisticated, youthful
suite. The casement windows and Edite Grinberga’s painting of an entry to a light-filled home served as starting points for the designer’s vision of a first apartment for a young woman in Paris. “I just went to Paris for the first time in January and fell in love,” says Beck. The blackand-white scheme was based on the bathroom’s tile, then layered with hot pink and coral accents. Vintage pieces mingle with new items, such as the Thibaut Maverick fabric for the custom bed—with her logo on the headboard—and custom drapes. At the foot of the bed, plaster cake slices and intaglios from a French market continue the ode to Paris, while iron and brass chairs with tiger velvet cushions and a Lucite table accent the room’s modern sensibility. Bar & Wine Room Upscale does not begin to describe the swanky
wine bar that Source designed for the lower level in collaboration with Benecki Homes. The rich, maroon-hued Venetian plaster wall finish casts the space with a soft glow, further enhanced from the custom brass-and-acrylic wine rack system with integrated LED lighting. Separated from the wine room by a sheet of glass, the back bar sports a graphic quartzite countertop that lends the space a timeless quality. The same stone has been used to fill the grid of water-jet cut circles in the complementary quartzites they selected for the front bar. “It makes a statement,” says co-owner Cydney Mitchell. “We’re on a mission to bring back all these old materials and reinvent them for the modern era.” Near the doors that lead out to the swimming pool, a vibrant gallery wall provides a lively backdrop for a cozy conversation area that includes a golden velvet sofa and a pair of concrete cocktail tables atop a soft area rug. “This space is beautiful and comfortable, elegant but fresh,” says co-owner Brittany Stafford. “It was exciting to see people use it the way we all dreamed about.” —Tate Gunnerson

Lower Lounge Because the lower lounge
opens up to a pool and lush greenery, Jessica Kain Barton endeavored to welcome the outdoor landscape into her space. A blue botanical-patterned wallcovering and matching fabric lavishes the room, including walls, upholstery, window treatments and even shades for the room’s ceiling pendant lights. Because she “envisioned a setting that can be easily dressed up for formal events or dressed down for casual occasions,” the designer added plenty of comfortable seating, such as slipper chairs, as well as a versatile center table, whose feminine floral-print skirt pays homage to style icon Deeda Blair. A highly detailed space, there are nods to the outdoors everywhere, starting with a collection of ceramic flowers, fruits and vegetables, some of which are displayed in a black chinoiserie hutch. Home Theater, Bar & Powder Room Designer Marie Cloud of Indigo Pruitt Design Studio united the
concept of a theater, living room and art gallery into “one colorful bubble” that celebrates the bold vibrancy of women and sisterhood. Shades of orange rust, slate blue, lavender and pastel pink in the furnishings and artwork complement the moody backdrop of the walls, which the warm lighting transforms from eggplant to wine tones. The artwork depicts a look of wonder, while a custom fluted console table and circular coffee table plus custom geometric ottomans present a vivid pattern play. Cloud further layered the rich hues with dried florals on the adjacent minibar, juju hats and the handpainted bathroom mural. “It is unapologetically expressive and impactful with the layers of interest, and that is what I would like to think I put out into the world when I show up,” says Cloud. —Lori Johnston

Game Room Color is as much of the conversation as competition in this eclectic space designed by Elizabeth McKay. She started with the alabaster billiard table and black walnut shuffleboard table with brass detailing, then chose fuchsia for an unexpected pop. “I really wanted your eye to find this room from lots of other vantage points,” she says. The French influence of the billiard table’s legs and streamline modern style of the shuffleboard table complement each other, says McKay. The chandelier represents the home’s ode to Art Nouveau and its scale perfectly fits the gracious room with its 11-foot ceilings, she adds. McKay praises the architectural and design team for providing incredible symmetry with the curved ceilings and a bump-out seating area that fit a curved sofa, bar cart and side tables. For the final touch, she wrapped all sides of the room with artwork, celebrating Southern muralists and painters. —Lori Johnston

Lower Patio To both highlight the home’s sophisticated architecture and channel the sunny landscape of the Greek Islands,
designer Kit Castaldo chose a minimalist color palette of white and cream with accents of black and yellow—which were inspired by the patterned terrazzo floor—for the lower patio. Divided into two separate seating areas, one end of the patio is furnished with rounded pieces meant to echo the room’s arches, including barrel-back upholstered chairs and a pair of black iron chairs that Castaldo particularly admires. “Their semi-sheltered silhouette creates a mini getaway moment.” In lieu of color, the designer added layers of organic texture, such as a sisal rug, linen drapery and contemporary wicker chairs. Separated from the seating areas by an arch, a dining area with a large round table skirted in a white and black-fringed cloth is the prime location for al fresco dining. —Jennifer Boles

Design-Build Clad with stucco accented by a cedar shake roof and steel-framed windows and doors, the three-level abode
that William Baker designed combines traditional and contemporary elements in a fresh way that’s ideal for a modern lifestyle. “It has the good manners to fit in rather than compete with the older homes on the street,” says Baker. He collaborated closely with building project manager Vern Vanderkleed of Benecki Homes to design the interior architecture and with Source to select the finishes, zeroing in on an updated Art Moderne milieu characterized by long horizontal lines juxtaposed with curvaceous forms. The living room fireplace, for example, has a bowed shape and a circular hearth that contrast the room’s otherwise linear dimensions— one of many examples throughout. “This house is inhabitable art,” says Vanderkleed. Pillowed boxwoods likewise soften the exterior, where landscape architects Charlie Sears and Alec Michaelides selected a restrained green and white plant palette that includes Natchez crepe myrtles, flowering hydrangeas, and flanking the motor court, a pair of Ligustrum trees. “Both the house and landscape are clean, elegant and understated,” says Sears. “It’s a timeless design that will never look dated.” —Tate Gunnerson
