There’s so much to love about spring in Atlanta! Everything’s green again, and it seems like more people are out and about, enjoying the beautiful weather. I’m glad for the chance to use our screen porch again; we love having dinner together in the fresh air. Grab the kids and get outside — head to your neighborhood park for a game of tennis, explore the BeltLine on bicycles or just get out and walk.

Our May issue takes a leap into the world of toddlers. It doesn’t seem very long ago that my kids were at the toddler age; they could be screaming one moment and adorable the next. Writer and mom Sarah Lyons offers some time-tested wisdom on the joys and challenges of the toddler years. When you need to get out of the house, there are lots of options around Atlanta for young children — we rounded up our favorite ideas for toddler fun. Explore the zoo or a nature center and you’re introducing your kids to the wonders of nature. Sign up for an art or music class and get the creativity started. Rainy day? Visit an indoor play center and jump off that extra energy. No matter what, just remember that the toddler stage doesn’t last forever; enjoy it while you can.

I’m looking forward to Mother’s Day. My kids usually make the day special by fixing me breakfast and encouraging me to take it easy all day — but that’s difficult for me! As moms, it’s hard to take a break without feeling a little guilty, or that if we take some time for ourselves, we’ll never catch back up. Try to remember that your needs are important, too. Even if it’s something small, like indulging in that iced latte while you’re running errands, the little things can be a mood-lifter.

May means fresh-picked strawberries, one of my favorite treats. Whether you pick them straight from a local berry patch or buy them at the farm stand, it’s a fun family tradition to start. May is also a great month for things to do. One of my family’s favorite events is the Decatur Art Festival; we’re also planning to see the new Immersive Disney Animation experience at Armour Yards. For her birthday lunch, my daughter wanted a tropical drink with a tiny umbrella in it. You deserve a tiny umbrella too, mom. Or, maybe a dollop of whipped cream with a chocolate swirl or a little heart design atop your coffee foam.

l Exposure to nature

The civilized world gallops at a breakneck pace. But nature helps us slow down to the incremental speed of life. The seeds we plant don’t sprout overnight. And we can regain our patience and our pacing by frequent exposure to the earth, air, sun and stars.

l Your favorite books and magazines

Books inspire movies in our minds. Even the internet with all of its diverse content cannot replace the feeling of hunkering down, one spread at a time, and escaping into artfully photographed and delightfully designed magazine pages. Phone calls with old friends can be the best medicine. There’s nothing like chuckling over old antics or sharing a giggle with someone who has known you forever. A quick nap. A long bath with bath salts and bubbles. Saying no to everything that does not feel like a yes. Asking for hugs. Moms who practice self-care probably live longer. For sure, they live happier.

Flowers are love. They bring cheer to a space and liven it up. It doesn’t have to be a big expense when you choose small, seasonal bouquets from the store or use what’s growing in your yard. If you are feeling cynical about the gift of flowers, try a more playful approach like a cookie bouquet or some balloons.

Celebrate Culture & Honor Heritage All Month Long

Every May is Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AANHPI). It’s a time to celebrate the heritage and culture of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 since the majority of workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. Learn more about the month at asianpacificheritage.gov. Explore the countries, histories and cultures of AANHPI with our ideas.

l Educate

Make it a point to learn about the diversity of countries of Asia and the Pacific Islands. Can your kids spot all these countries on a map or globe? Can you? Asia is the largest continent, and the area contains 48 countries; some you may be familiar with and others not so much. The Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia include 24 countries.

Learn more about the contributions of people, especially notable figures, together. Fred Toyosaburo Korematsu was a civil rights activist who resisted the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII.

Patsy T. Mink was the first Asian American woman and woman of color in Congress. Did you know Vera Wang became an independent bridal wear designer at age 40? Have your kids create a project about a person who inspires them.

Children’s books are an excellent way to introduce cultures, holidays, peoples and experiences that are different than your own. Books represent a variety of backgrounds, and for older children, they may launch a deeper discussion. Check out “Chinese New Year Colors” for ages 0-3, “Sunday Funday in Koreatown” for ages 3-7 and “Brother’s Keeper” for ages 8-12. For older kids and yourself, try the new book, “We Are Here: 30 Inspiring Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Have Shaped the United States,” for profiles of artists, activities, scientists, writers and more.

American Public Television offers Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month educational programming. “Barakan Discovers: Ainu – A New Generation” follows the history and cultural heritage efforts of young Ainu, the indigenous people of northern Japan, to restore their heritage. “Meet and Eat at Lee’s Garden” explores how early Chinese restaurants played an important role in the social history of Chinese and Jewish communities. Fictional films allow viewers to step into the lives of the characters. Check out some of these familyfriendly films for a movie night.

“Moana” is based on stories from Polynesian mythology. “Lilo & Stitch” is set in a fictional Hawaii town. Two siblings reconnect with their Hawaiian heritage in “Finding ‘Ohana.” “Raya and the Last Dragon” uses Southeast Asian influences to tell its fantasy story.

Rhea Kumar lives with her tight-knit multigenerational family and wants to be an EDM DJ in “Spin.” The animated musical “Over the Moon” is based on Chinese legend, and “Wish Dragon” is based on Chinese fables; both are on Netflix.

More than 390,000 AANHPI are estimated to live in the state of Georgia.

l Be an Armchair Traveler

Use Google Earth to “visit” historic locations. Explore the Taj Mahal in India, the Towers of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Itsukushima Shrine in Japan and more; earth.google.com. The National Park Service has information on special sites that honor Asian American and Pacific Islanders in the U.S.; nps.gov/subjects/aapiheritage/places.htm. Take a virtual visit to the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center at smithsonianapa.org.

Search for music and dance performances from the different countries that are part of AANHPI. Search YouTube for the music of Hawaii, traditional Samoan music, Carnatic music with origins in Southern India, traditional Khmer music from Cambodia and classical Indian Bharatanatyam dance.

l Attend Cultural Events

Make plans to attend more events and festivals celebrating other countries. Throughout May, the Children’s Museum of Atlanta will celebrate the Heritage Month with activities and crafts designed to showcase the contributions of different Asians and Pacific Islanders. Check to see if your community is hosting a celebration; Suwanee is holding one on May 19. The JapanFest in Atlanta will be held on September 16-17. At the beginning of the year, many places across metro Atlanta hold Lunar New Year events.

l Visit a Japanese Garden

In Japan, some of the most beautiful gardens consist of rocks and stones, as part of a tradition following the arrival of Zen Buddhism from China. Zen emphasizes the importance of meditation and a simpler, more mindful outlook. Travel to Gibbs Gardens in Cherokee County to see “Tsukiyami,” which is the largest Japanese Garden in the nation and features seven spring-fed ponds with islands, bridges, cherry blossoms in the spring, stone Japanese lanterns and more. Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Japanese Garden combines several styles of traditional Japanese gardens. The Japanese Zen Garden at Grand Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead features winding paths, a bridge, a 30-foot waterfall and plenty of greenery.

l Make a Craft

Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding. Learn how to make flowers, birds, hearts, animals and more at origami.guide. Paper lanterns originate from China and Japan. They were originally made from paper or silk with a bamboo or wood frame and lit with a candle. Make your own paper lanterns with construction paper, scissors, a pencil, decorations, a ruler and tape or stapler; find full instructions at pbs.org.

A lei is a garland or wreath common in Hawaii, across Polynesia and the Philippines. Make your own with string, construction paper and straws; find full instructions at emmaowl.com.

Diwali, or Dipawali, is India’s biggest and most important holiday. The Festival of Lights gets its name from the row of clay lamps that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. l Have Fun with Food

Eating at a new restaurant is a delightful way to try a different cuisine. Trader Vic’s features dishes from the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Asia and Japan and uses Chinese wood-fired ovens; tradervicsatl.com. Food Terminal features a high variety of Asian street foods with a heavy emphasis on Malaysian cuisine; foodterminal.com. If your kids are older, visit a grocery store together to find new snacks and foods. Wagaya Groceries focuses mainly on Japanese and some Eastern Asian products; wagayagroceries.com. Once you find your ingredients, cook up something new together. Find a cookbook featuring a cuisine that’s different than your usual fare. Atlanta’s for foodies! The metro Atlanta area is a marvelous place for trying new foods and enjoying delicious dishes. These impressive restaurant-owner moms are balancing the food scene and family life. We spoke to them about how they combine their love of family and food.

Foodie Mom: Pinky Cole

Pinky Cole is the founder and CEO of Atlanta-based chain Slutty Vegan, which is a vegan restaurant featuring a menu of delicious burgers, sandwiches and more. She is the mom of D Ella Hayes, 20 months, and Derrick Jermaine Hayes Jr., 9 months.

Do you have a hard time convincing your children to eat plant-based?

When I try to give my daughter vegan pizza, if she sees cheese pizza, she looks at it like she wants it. So, I improvise by removing the cheese and allowing her to eat the dough. It’s challenging sometimes, but she likes fruits, and that saves me because I like to eat fruit, and she eats a lot of what I eat.

Do you have any tips on how to encourage your children to try new items/ cuisine?

I’ve learned what they like and don’t like based on the things they eat. My daughter loves avocados, so I know if she doesn’t want anything else, I lean into that. My son basically eats anything.

What do you hope your children learn from you based on your business/ entrepreneurship?

Be confident in all things that you do and own your space. Don’t allow anyone else to define how you choose to show up.

Does your family life inspire your business/ restaurant pursuits?

Absolutely! Even before Charlie Mae was here, I always knew I didn’t want to be a chef working 60+ hours a week, missing bath time. The entire reason my husband and I went with a breakfast concept with Gracious Plenty Bakery & Breakfast was to be able to balance a family life. Our second concept, Cherried Mary’s Ice Cream Parlor, has allowed us to continue this balance while also expanding. Since having Charlie Mae, our desire to create environments and products of genuine goodness has only increased. We want a place where all parents feel safe and proud feeding their children.

What’s the best advice you received from a fellow mom about parenting?

Parenting isn’t about controlling your children’s emotions; it’s about controlling yours.

What advice would you give a new mom?

Your children don’t measure happiness with expensive things, schools and trips. The best thing you can give them is a happy parent. Don’t let false standards set by society turn you into a ball of stress. Make the mess. Make the memory! Mothers do not need to be a business owner to be a superhero. There is such beauty in every form of motherhood, and we need each of them.

Atlanta is a fantastic town for foodies. Do you have any tips on how to encourage your children to try new items/cuisine?

I let them experience all types of cuisines and form their own opinions, even with food I don’t particularly care for.

What advice would you give a new mom?

Find the good in every moment. Be present in your parenting journey because they’ll be grown before you know it.

Who inspires you?

Parenting is a momentous task. Without my mom, I would not be the mom that I am.

Foodie Mom: Alessandra Noviello Hayes

Alessandra Noviello Hayes is co-owner and co-operator of Nino’s Italian Restaurant, which she runs with her father and her husband. Nino’s, which opened in 1968, is the oldest, family-owned Italian restaurant in Atlanta. Her father, Antonio Noviello, bought Nino’s in 1982. She is the mother of Eva, 9; Enzo, 7; and Eliana, 2.

Do you have any family traditions you grew up with that you hope your children continue?

The family values of meals. I’m from a big Italian family, and dinner is very important, and we’d have long two-hour Italian dinners together. My mom did a really good job making sure it was a long conversation and we were enjoying each other and the food. Even last night, at the restaurant, we had the kids sit down at the table. Even when we’re working and even if we have to get up and down, we’re having dinner together.

As a family-owned restaurant, do you hope to pass it onto your children?

I started working 17 years ago, and it was my dream to carry it on after my dad retired. My kids are showing a lot of interest. My 9-year-old wants to work; she’s asking if she can hostess or pour water. My parents never pushed it on us and, of my sisters, I was the only one who fell in love with the food industry. I don’t want to push it on them, but it would be wonderful to have them carry it on.

What advice would you give other moms?

As moms, we’re all really busy, and we have to pack in all of our activities. We work 80 hours a week, and with taking the kids everywhere, we’re crazy busy. Remember to take a beat and slow down and make conversation with your kids, especially the young ones. Make eye contact and learn about their favorite hobbies; ask about their day. Kids can change within a week, and we have to make sure we’re really connecting and not missing it.

Foodie Mom: Sarah Davies

Sarah Davies is the co-owner of Biggerstaff Brewing, and she is the stepmother of Cole, 27, and mother of Logan, 19. How do you maintain a family-friendly environment in a brewery?

It’s the atmosphere we’ve created. We have a table of board games; our highchairs are visible; we have family bathrooms and changing tables. The staff enjoy children and interacting with them. It’s word-of-mouth that we’re family-friendly, and I think we get more families than anything right now. We have comedy on the second Friday of every month, and we moved it from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. because some comedians’ language is a little rough around the edges, so to stay family friendly, we changed the time. We’re starting a Taco Tuesday menu in a couple of weeks, which I think families will enjoy.

As a family-owned business, do you hope that legacy passes onto your children?

The name Biggerstaff is a family name; it comes from my mom’s side, and my mom is a business owner as well. She runs a chain of hair salons. I remember a time when she told me, I don’t want you to feel like you have to take over this business. It was nice to hear. What I would say to my kids: It’s yours if you want it; we’re happy to leave it to you, but chase your own dream. I hope the most important thing that they would learn from this is that if you have an idea or a dream, and you don’t ever give up on it, you can make it happen. That’s a more important lesson than taking over one day.

Foodie Mom: Allisha Kelly

Allisha Kelly is the co-owner of Cosmo’s Pizza + Social. Opened in 2001, when the original owners retired, Kelly and fellow co-owner Dana Martin purchased the restaurant to keep the gem from closing its doors. In addition to Cosmo’s Pizza, they opened Social in 2021, a full-service bar. She is the mother of two sons, ages 22 and 20.

Atlanta is a fantastic town for foodies. Do you have any tips on how to encourage your children to try new items/cuisine?

I encourage my kids to try new food items by making all sorts of different foods and cuisines available to them. Typically, if I enjoy something, they do, too. I am very thankful as both of my children are very adventurous eaters.

Is there a family tradition you have from growing up that you hope your children will continue?

My mother is Filipino, so we make lumpia at home; lumpia is the Filipino version of an egg roll. When my lola (grandmother) was alive, my mom, my aunts, my sister and my lola would gather around the table and make lumpia together. It was a labor of love that took an hour or two. My childhood is filled with a lot of those sweet memories while making lumpia.

What has the food industry taught you?

Being a woman in the restaurant business is not for the weak. It’s hard work and dedication and constantly proving you will not fail. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Do you have any tips for work/life balance?

There is nothing wrong with working hard for what you want, but do take time to enjoy, even if it’s one day every two weeks.

As a business owner, what do you hope your children learn from you?

Responsibility and that nothing comes easy. Challenges are always present and being able to change directions is part of life.

Is there a tradition you grew up with that you do like to do with your kids?

I loved family dinners as a kid when everyone could get together and just share time despite busy schedules. I am the family dinner home. I love hosting and seeing everyone together, just enjoying time.

Do you have any tips for work/life balance?

I believe in work/life integration because balance always seems off. We have one life, and it includes both work and play, so we must incorporate our activities on every level in our daily lives. When everything is incorporated as one, it flows seamlessly — well, as seamlessly as possible!

As a business owner, what do you hope your children learn from you?

I hope they learn that anything is possible if you work hard enough to achieve it. I pray that as they have watched me, they have learned that hard work, education and perseverance truly pay off.

My husband, daughter and I recently moved to Dawsonville, where we have six acres and are growing our farm. We currently have more than 40 chickens, two turkeys, three goats and, of course, the farm dogs and cat. We are working on a halfacre garden for the restaurants, so we really love to stay around our new hometown and visit Amicalola or the animal sanctuary in Cleveland.

I moved here with my kids 12 years ago, and one of the things I absolutely love is the diversity and culture Atlanta has to offer. From the museums to sporting events to the BeltLine, the area is not short of family activities to engage in.

We all work together, so it’s really tough to turn work off. Cole is a barista, and Logan is a dishwasher. We’re often discussing the business in some way. We all like to work out. We’ll exercise together, and that’s a cool way of being together and turning off the business, along with enjoying the health benefits of exercise.

Toddlers Don’t Come With Instructions

Meltdowns in the aisle at a store when you feel all eyes are on you?

Feeling like you’ll never leave the house again because your child insists on putting on her own shoes?

Wondering how giving him the snack he asked for 5 minutes ago is cause for throwing food?

Phrases like “the terrible twos” didn’t come from nowhere, but embracing this unique time in life is possible.

Toddlers are defined as kids ranging from ages 1-3 years old and during this time, they meet many developmental milestones including learning to walk, talk, interact with others, and explore the world around them. As a parent this can be a joy to watch, but can also become exhausting as kids express their independence and work out their frustrations through tantrums.

While all of this is normal, parents can feel overwhelmed and frustrated. You will likely find yourself saying, “It’s a good thing you’re so cute!” more often than you’d like.

Toddlers don’t come with an instruction manual, but these tips can help you survive and perhaps even enjoy the toddler years.

Laughter

The old saying “Laughter is the best medicine” could be applied to parenthood. When things seem particularly stressful or you are overwhelmed by a messy playroom, a little laughter can turn your mood around. Allow yourself to be silly and play with your child. Try to slow down and see the world through their eyes. Laughing and playing with your child can also be a good distraction if your child needs to be redirected.

Patience

When parenting a toddler, your patience will be stretched to the limits. Whenever you’re dealing with a child, it’s best to remember they are learning and testing limits. Try to give grace to yourself and your child and allow for bumps along the way. Set boundaries for your child knowing they will be tested. Arguing with a toddler is never worth the effort. If you feel yourself becoming angry, simply walk away for a few minutes and come back when your patience has returned. Modeling this behavior will help your child understand how to work out their own frustrations in a healthy way.

Anticipation

One of the best ways to help keep your toddler from getting into trouble is to anticipate what might be tempting for little ones. Before nap or playtime, scan the room for dangers or messes waiting to happen. Pack your car with an extra change of clothing, emergency snacks and diaper supplies in case you need them when you are away from home. When you are headed out of the house, try to leave a few minutes early in case you need extra time. If you know a toy or situation triggers your child to feel frustrated, avoid it if possible. You can’t prevent every tantrum and challenge you will face, but some can be avoided with a little planning.

Let it go

Life is too short to worry about having a perfectly clean house. Toddlers are famous for making messes, dumping toys and moving from one thing to the next in minutes. During the toddler years, try to focus on playing with your kids and allowing them to have fun rather than exhausting yourself cleaning. There will be plenty of years in the notso-distant future when your house will stay clean. If toy clutter is stressful to you, reduce the number of toys that are out at any given time. Toddlers are often motivated by music; play or sing the “Cleanup” song and have your child help pick up toys before transitioning to mealtime or bedtime.

Routine

Toddlers thrive on routine because they know what to expect. When kids know what to expect, transitions are smoother for kids. The whole day doesn’t have to be planned but having a routine at transitional periods of the day can make things easier for parents and little ones. Naps, bedtime, meals and clean up time can give your kids consistency that they thrive on. For parents, routines can be a game-changer, especially if you are used to work schedules and being in control of the world around you.

Perspective

Toddlers are naturally curious, which helps them learn and develop. This curiosity can also lead them to do things that are unsafe like climbing where they could fall, putting things in their mouths, and getting into things they shouldn’t. Create a safe place for your child where they can play without safety concerns. You may find it easiest to create a play space where you can use gates to help keep kids safe. For some parents, it’s easier to toddler-proof the entire house and let them have free reign.

The toddler years are short. Your child is learning, discovering the world, and growing every day, which is so important to their development. When they are still and quiet, cuddle up and enjoy the moment. When they want to be carried, try to remember all too soon they will be too big. Enjoy the sweet moments, embrace challenging ones, and try to remember that toddlers are cute for a reason and this stage will pass in the blink of an eye.

Pools Around Atlanta to Keep You Cool This Summer

Summer is around the corner and so are the long, hot days! Joining a community pool is a fun and — believe it or not — affordable way to stay active and make memories this summer. Many parks and rec departments run pools at parks, complete with lifeguards, with summer membership options. Some private community and fitness centers also offer summeronly packages you can take advantage of. If you aren’t sure about committing for the season and want to check out your options, you can buy day passes for most pools.

You can also elevate your pool day experience by purchasing day or spa passes to some of Atlanta’s best hotels; depending on your budget and what the hotel offers, you can get access to the fitness center and spa, along with the pool. If you have a big group, consider splurging on a cabana to guarantee space for your stuff and chairs for your crew during snack and rest times.

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR EXPERIENCE

n Join early. Most pools in the area open around Memorial Day, so commit early to get as much swim time in as possible. Plus, early bird rates are available at some pools if you sign up before their deadline.

n Do your research. Find a pool that’s close to you and has the right amenities for your family. Some options have baby pools or splash pads for younger children. Others offer snack bars, slides and shower facilities.

n Be aware of hours and holidays. Many pools have different hours on the weekends versus during the week and are closed on certain holidays. Pay attention to these dates on the pool’s website to avoid disappointment if you show up and can’t get in.

n Have a dedicated pool bag. Chances are, pool outings will become a family favorite, so be prepared to save yourself time and stress. Keep a bag ready with goggles, sunscreen, towels, pool toys, snacks and water. This way, you can be pool ready in a jiffy!

n Recruit friends. Swimming is always more fun with friends! Reach out to a neighbor who has kids the same ages as yours to see if they will join a pool with you. Your kids will appreciate the playmates, and you’ll be glad there are other adults around to chat with (and to keep watch if you need to make a quick phone call or run to the restroom).

Omni Hotel at the Battery Atlanta

If you’re a Braves fan, this rooftop pool is the perfect option as you can see parts of Truist Park from the pool and its surrounding deck. Day passes start at $60 and can be $100 or more on game days.

There are also pools Downtown and in Buckhead that offer day and spa passes, including adults-only options if you need a summer staycation.

Browns Mill Aquatic Facility

Featuring a lazy river, over-the-pool climbing nets, slides and more, this Lithonia pool is fun for the whole family. Chairs to relax in and tubes for floating are available. Seven Springs Water Park

Cobb County’s Powder Springs boasts this community water wonderland featuring two water slides, a lazy river and a splash pad area for little ones. Even if you don’t have your own backyard pool, you can still host a private pool party thanks to a new platform called Swimply. Think of it like Airbnb or Vrbo, but it’s just for pools and you rent by the hour. You can search by various criteria, including heated, indoors, outdoors and price range. We think it’s worth a try!

You pay based on the date you select and how many adults, children and pets will be with you. Kids younger than 2 are free for most pools. Resort-style pools with views of the Chattahoochee River can go for $200/hour on a Saturday in the summer for a family of four while a more homey pool in the ‘burbs will run you around $55.
