RICHARD CALMES
“A
Passion for Dance” is the title given to Richard Calmes’ 2008 Photography Exhibition in Charnwood, England, and it is an apt description of the commitment he has given his new career. An Atlantan since the age of 15, Richard has been an architect and an international entrepreneur. Yet nothing in his past has given him the excitement and challenge of visually capturing the essence of dance. 2008 has been a breakthrough year. He has had four magazine covers, cover stories, and dozens of published articles and photographs to his credit. He photographed the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association annual event for the third year. He was tapped by the North Carolina School for the Arts to work with their Dance Department’s Dean, Ethan Stiefel, creating new promotional images. He worked with Lois Greenfield and enjoyed covering dance events such as the ABT’s “Make a Ballet” program in New York City for Dancer Magazine. One recent opportunity resulted when Richard photographed Atlanta dancer Angela Harris’ “Dance Canvas” (www.dancecanvas.com) premiere last summer, introduced Richard to yet more beautiful dancers such as Koya Craddock seen leaping across this issue’s Atlanta ShowGuide Magazine cover. Richard discovered photography in the Army where he was a Combat Photographer in Viet Nam. Video and photography both played a role in his career, but dance came later. Four years ago, his wife, Holley, asked him to shoot promotional photos for her publicity work with Gwinnett Ballet Theatre. “I immediately connected with the dancers’ efforts and commitment. As an aerobic athlete for the past forty years, I know the incredible dedication it takes, and how ephemeral the ‘moment’ is,” he says. “As my daughter grew up studying dance, I gained a deep respect for the work and sacrifice that goes into building a dancer. This type of knowledge is critical for a photographer. If you try to shoot a performance without understanding choreography, you will miss opportunities for pictures. Timing is critical.” In addition, the stage is only one place where Richard captures dynamic images. He has also found success putting dancers in Times Square, Central Park, the Pacific Ocean, downtown Atlanta, popping out of rivers and lakes, and other “unexpected” places. “For me it is about catching the moment that goes by in the blink of an eye. I
was once advised that even a nugget of an idea is too big of a start, that quality comes from a single kernel of an idea. These tiny kernels are always the starting point for my process of making dances and they often live in an art form outside of dance. Even when my inspiration to create a piece is based on an abstract thought, the first kernel for the actual dance comes from music, or an image from a film or photograph, another dance I’ve seen, or a single David Robinson, Kristyn McGeehan, Joanna Brooks, line from a poem, or sometimes an Shannan Smith, Whitney Sauve, Rian Maxwell. entire play or story. Some of these Photo credit Dinny Addison, 2006 kernels pop as soon as I witness them. Some are rough around the edges at first and require research to smooth out. Some I simply sit on for years. Usually more than one of these kernels align side by side forming a sort of metaphorical billboard advertising my next dance, my subconscious mind trying to sell an idea to my waking self. My brain serves as a sort of storage system for all these millions of kernels. When the ideas for a dance begin to form tangible images, one or two of those little kernels propel the idea to the surface. But once the images for a dance begin to materialize the process is no longer my own. I have to have outside bodies, dancers, in order to choreograph. I always sketch loose movement phrases by myself in the studio but rarely do these singular sketches retain their original form. I can’t see the body dancing when it’s my own, so I have to set the movement on other dancers. Now the real work can begin. Once I have the picture in front of me where I can see the Joanna Brooks shapes, motion, patterns and nuances of a dance all at the same time, I can start editing. The editing process is often the longest and most important part of making dances. It is also the stage where the individual dancers inform the choreography with their own phrasing. My decisions here are simply instinctive; what goes and what stays, what is modified and what evolves 6

come from a place that I can’t really explain. This editing is often painstaking for both me and the other artists because we are constantly erasing, scribbling, erasing and redrawing, sometimes the only difference being the angle of a splay between two fingers. Choreography can remain set and unchanged for months but usually this editing process lasts until the two or three weeks prior to showtime when we are finally forced to rehearse for continuity. Only when the dance is put on stage in front of an audience does it become complete, when the person that watches the performance begins forming and adding their own kernels to the experience. Courtney is a graduate of the Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education and is very grateful for having been given the opportunity to perform the roles of Nutcracker’s Dew Drop Fairy and Marya, and Daisy in The Great Gatsby,, as well as contemporary works such as Lauri Stallings’ Shoo Pah Minor and bekken/the drum also waltzes. When she is not dancing, Courtney enjoys going to Piedmont Park, teaching Pilates, listening to music, shopping, and attending Georgia Tech as a Business Management major. Courtney would like to express her appreciation for her undyingly supportive family and friends who consistently serve as sources of encouragement and enrichment in her life.

An Atlanta native, Kristine began her serious dance training at Atlanta Ballet’s Centre for Dance Education. She furthered her dance education by spending summers at distinguished schools such as the School of American Ballet, Boston Ballet, and Chautauqua Ballet. With Atlanta Ballet, Kristine has performed principal roles in John McFall’s Swan Lake, Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker, Ben Stevenson’s Esmeralda pas de deux, and George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante. Beauty, Giselle Her recent favorite roles include Aurora in Sleeping Beauty in Giselle, and the Liberty Bell in Stars and Stripes Stripes. Kristine is currently a senior inching towards an undergraduate degree at George State University. She is extremely grateful for her family and friends continued love and support.

John Michael Schert began his dance career as a “Party Guest” in Valdosta, Georgia’s local production of the Nutcracker. Linda Chase, who later became Schert’s first dance teacher, initially sought one of his older brothers to play Photo by Ben Rudick the role. During the production, it became clear that the 5 year-old Schert wanted to be involved in every scene and was fascinated by the backstage energy. This young dancer from south Georgia is now both a dancer and the executive director of the Trey McIntyre Project, one of the hottest dance companies in the country. Using classical ballet as a point of departure, Trey McIntyre’s company creates emotionally-charged experiences in movement that defy categorization, distilling emotions, and exploring ideas about culture and human relationships. In Valdosta, at an early age, Schert decided he was interested in pursuing ballet full time. Understanding the necessity to surround himself “in an artistic environment with others pursuing the same goal,” Schert left for school in North Carolina at age 14, leaving supportive, but not so eager parents behind. Having always been interested in the frameworks of the dance world, Schert is appreciative of the administrative and the creative side of the arts. He will be on his way back to Georgia to perform at the Georgia State’s Rialto Center on March 14 as part of Trey McIntyre Project. For more information visit www.rialtocenter.org. oetic Dance Ensemble is a non-profit organization dedicated to presenting the quality of the human spirit through the athleticism and artistry of dance to a wide audience by creating and producing innovative and accessible choreographic works. Zoetic was established in 1999 to give voice to the extraordinary potential of the human body and spirit. The founders envisioned a professional modern dance company serving the Atlanta community reflective of their commitment to training, performance, and accessibility. Zoetic is a volunteer-run organization with artists who contribute on every level, from performing to choreography, teaching to board and committee service. Zoetic has been acclaimed for their “quirky sense of humor in the company’s athletic, technically accomplished approach to dance” (Creative Loafing, 2007). Zoetic’s unique culture attracts dancers and other creative partners who can most accurately be described as ‘special’ people that create and perform exciting new works with integrity and spirit. Zoetic has established a following among young, hip individuals who regularly attend our performances, perhaps for the free beer. One of our greatest compliments was received from a 22 year-old after a performance of WET at Dad’s Garage Theater: “You make me want to like modern dance.” Zoetic was named ‘Best New Moves’ in the 2007 Best of Atlanta issue of Atlanta Magazine. Zoetic was also recognized in the Creative Loafing’s ‘Best of Atlanta’ issue for their productions of CAKE, 2005 at Nickel & Dime Studios, and in 2004 for their production of WET at Dad’s Garage Theater. CAKE was also named one of 2005’s best dance performances in the Creative Loafing’s Year in Culture edition. Zoetic was the recipient of the 2002 ABBY Award for “Best New Arts Organization” from the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and was named the ‘best dance performance of 2002’ in the Creative Loafing’s Year in Culture for their production of SPIN. Zoetic’s work has been chosen for inclusion in the Modern Atlanta Dance Festival, the First Glance Festival, and the Inman Park Dance Festival. Zoetic offers unique training opportunities for advanced/professional dancers, including company classes, outreach programs, and workshops led by emerging choreographers as well as internationally renowned artists including Seydou Boro of Salia Ni Seydou, Burkina Faso, Gary Abbott and Kevin Iega Jeff, Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre, Antionio Sisk, Philadanco, Matt Kent, Pilabolus, Anna Leo, Emory University and more. Zoetic’s latest effort, the Zoetic Dance Exchange, offers emerging and professional dancers an opportunity explore technique, create movement and perform new contemporary dance works in collaboration with some of Georgia’s most exciting dance artists. Now 14 members strong, the group of 9 dancers combine their fusion of talent and training; bringing both modern dance expertise and traditional West, Central and Southern African dance expertise together to present authentic indigenous African Dance and culture. Manga dancers perform with a lot of high energy and a strong master of the African dance form, successfully engaging all audiences. The drummers of Manga African Dance are versed in traditional African drum rhythm native to countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, and Senegal. The five-member drum unit make-up the musical core of Manga African Dance and feature master artists who play a variety of drums including the dundun (talking drum), the kutrio, the djimbe and the djoun djoun. The Yoruba Dance Concert Music Director, Bisi Adeleke, born in Osun State Nigeria, comes from a long line of drummers. Bisi was taught to play the talking drum by his father. Manga is dedicated to preserving, presenting and teaching indigenous African culture through dance, education and performance. Company members bring a variety of languages to their portfolio of cultural education including Yoruba, Ewá, Ghá, French Wolof, Pulaar, Jola, Mandinka and one of the 16 indigenous languages of Liberia. Under the direction of Executive Director, Ramatu Afegbua-Sabbatt a native of Idah, Kogi State Nigeria, and the organization has presented its services to the community and school as roster artists for the Fulton County School Arts Program, Georgia Council for the Arts and Young Audiences. A recipient of several awards this organization received the John Lewis office, Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in 2006 and 2005 as well as special recognition from the National Council of Arts and Culture in Oshogbo for “Great Authentic work in USA (Congratulations).” For more infomation visit www.mangadance.org.

T
he Ruth Mitchell Dance Theatre (RMDT) has been known for dance excellence in Metro Atlanta for over fifty years. Since 1956, the company has consistently produced some of the region’s best trained dancers. Former students have danced with The Boston Ballet, The Houston Ballet, The Louisville Ballet, Koresh Dance Company, Martha Graham, and the grand stages of Broadway. Ruth Mitchell Dance Theatre is committed to the presentation of professional quality, varied dance programs, with specific goals of providing local dancers and choreographers with a showcase for their work, as well as pre-professional dancers with performing opportunities. We strive to balance entertainment with educational concepts, while reaching a broad audience. RMDT dancers train under the guidance of exceptionally qualified teachers at Georgia Dance Conservatory (GDC) located on the Historic Marietta Square. Master classes in all forms of dance are offered throughout the year. RMDT Artistic Director, Lisa A. Toups is an award-winning choreographer and instructor with over 30 years of experience. Ms. Toups was recognized at the International Dance Festival in Los Angeles for her unique style of choreography. She is a former faculty member of the Governor’s Honor Program and Pebblebrook High School’s Program for Excellence in Performing Arts in Cobb County. Lisa Toups is the Director at Large for the Southeastern Regional Ballet Association which is the regional branch of Regional Dance America and also serves on the Dance Advisory Board for Kennesaw University. Ms. Toups is also the director of the Georgia Dance Conservatory (GDC). Ruth Mitchell Dance Theatre has 3 productions a year.
