Sultry, Playful and Passionate Dance Will Open Atlanta Ballet’s Season
Sultry, playful and passionate dance meets neoclassical and lively jazz styles in Atlanta Ballet’s September season opener. Fall Into Rhythm will feature fluid, colorful and energetic choreography that will span genres and musical forms to showcase the passion and power of Atlanta Ballet.
An ambitious repertoire of vibrant dance will bring together neoclassical and lively jazz styles in an eclectic program featuring the stunning works of three celebrated choreographers. Tu Tu by Stanton Welch, Elemental Brubeck by Lar Lubovitch, and Harmony of Opposite Tensions, a world premiere by Kiyon Ross, will span genre and musical forms to showcase the passion and power of Atlanta Ballet on the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre stage.
Stanton Welch’s Tu Tu, a highly stylized classical work with a playful twist, features 22 dancers in three movements, set to Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major with costumes inspired by Gustav Klimt.
Lar Lubovitch’s Elemental Brubeck channels the iconic style of Dave Brubeck’s ‘jazz-meets-symphony’ piece with swaying hips, jazzy twists and breathtaking leaps. Acclaimed choreographer and Associate Artistic Director at Pacific Northwest Ballet Kiyon Ross, last in Atlanta for 2022’s Sum Stravinsky, will take audiences deeper into his signature neoclassical style with a new work commissioned specifically for Atlanta Ballet — Harmony of Opposite Tensions set to the music of Kirill Richter, Sofiane Pamart and Max Richter.
Fall Into Rhythm will be on stage for one weekend only, September 13 to 15 at Cobb Energy Centre. For tickets go to atlantaballet.com.

Hear Us Out: Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Explores the Classical Era in its New Season
Entering its 80th season, the GRAMMY® Award-winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, led by Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann, is readying a thrilling 2024-2025 program of classical greats, showcasing soloists from around the world and right here in Atlanta. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra invites you to share in a memorable season as it takes a deep dive into the Classical era with works from Mozart, Haydn, and a full season Beethoven Project.
Stutzmann is praised around the world as a master of both orchestral and operatic repertoire and was recently named “Best Conductor of the Year” at the Oper Awards, in part for her outstanding debut at the Bayreuth Festival in June of 2023 with Wagner’s Tannhäuser, of which BR Klassik reported, “never having experienced such a standing ovation at a pit debut in Bayreuth.” Her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2023 garnered praise from critics and audiences alike, with The New York Times calling it a “splashy Met debut.”
Nathalie Stutzmann and the Orchestra kick off the season with Gustav Mahler’s exultant Symphony No. 1. Unfolding like the coming of spring, the Symphony moves
from a popular children’s song to a mighty orchestral thunderstorm before exploding in technicolor radiance. The ASO welcomes cellist Edgar Moreau, who made his recent Atlanta debut “with dazzling accuracy and insouciant wit” (ArtsATL). Moreau joins the Orchestra for one of the great masterpieces for the cello, Robert Schumann’s enigmatic Cello Concerto.
The following weekend, September 26 & 27, Stutzmann is joined by mezzosoprano Fleur Barron and baritone Samuel Hasselhorn, both making their ASO debuts, for Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy’s Magic Horn), followed by Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6.
Stutzmann returns to the podium on November 7, 9, and 10 to conduct an evening of Mozart, presenting his passionate Symphony No. 40 and the masterpiece Mass in C Minor. Joining the Orchestra for the Mass are Olga Kulchynska, soprano; Julia Lezhneva, soprano; Lunga Eric Hallam, tenor; and Harold Wilson, bass, as well as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus.
Single tickets for the 2024-25 Delta classical season are now on sale; for more information, visit aso.org/hearusout.

Award-winning Plays, World Premieres, and Beloved Classics at the Alliance Theatre this Fall
The 56th season of the Alliance Theatre continues with awardwinning plays, world premieres, and works developed for youth and families.
This fall, the Alliance will produce the critically acclaimed play by Lloyd Suh, THE CHINESE LADY. Described by The New York Times as “moving and often sharply funny,” THE CHINESE LADY is inspired by the true story of the first Chinese female to set foot in America and is a unique portrait of a young country struggling with its identity and role in the world as seen through the eyes of an idealistic migrant.
For the holidays, the Alliance will present an Atlanta favorite and classic, A CHRISTMAS CAROL on The CocaCola Stage, November 9 – December 24. Described by The Atlanta JournalConstitution as “high art of the season… a nostalgic feast for the eyes” audiences will be transported to the streets of London for the redemption story of Ebenezer Scrooge, told with beautiful live music and an allstar cast.
Following THE CHINESE LADY on the Hertz Stage, the Alliance will produce
the world premiere of the 21st winner of the celebrated Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, BUSINESS IDEAS, by Milo Cramer from the University of California San Diego. Inspired by Cramer’s experiences with his enterprising mom, BUSINESS IDEAS is a cross-generational comedy about wealth — who has it and why? — and the value we place on it. Theatrical Outfit’s Artistic Director Matt Torney directs. Past winners of the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition have become some of today’s most exciting playwrights and writers, including Tarell Alvin McCraney, whose play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue inspired the 2017 Academy Awardwinning film for Best Picture, Moonlight; Mike Lew (Tiger Style!), 2018 winner of the PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award for an Emerging American Playwright; and Mansa Ra, whose winning play Too Heavy For Your Pocket received multiple productions including Off-Broadway. Did Shakespeare write A Christmas Carol?
Shakespeare enthusiasts certainly are not questioning the efficacy of their dedication to the works of William Shakespeare. The fact remains that with twelve months of programming to present each year, more than any other theatre company in the state, there are opportunities for the Atlanta Shakespeare Company to present something “Shakespeare adjacent”, (aka “Nearspeare”). Or maybe, ASC just wants to tell a timeless tale that Shakespeare didn’t write.
It’s a benefit to everyone from educators bringing their students to see, for instance, Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie” at the Shakespeare Tavern, a theatre they trust, to well-seasoned subscribers who are interested in expanding horizons, to actors stretching their performing chops in a new way.
For families who want to introduce their kids to the theatre, ASC has begun offering summertime adventure classic tales, like Ken Ludwig’s Sherwood: the Adventures of Robin Hood and his version of Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers. Of course, let’s not forget about Charles Dickens every December for the past 20+ years!
Audiences are on board for the variety. Last season, ASC, along with Havoc Movement, presented a month-long
version of Dracula: The Failings of Men in October that was the quickest-selling show in their history. In April 2024, along with Belle Esprit, ASC thrilled audiences with a fresh new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility
Of course, for those “Shakespearespecific” kinds of patrons, The Atlanta Shakespeare Company will always produce more ‘Speare every year than any other company in the country. After all, they are the only Shakespeare company in the world to have completed his 39-play canon...twice.
It IS the SHAKESPEARE Tavern Playhouse after all. So naturally it’s “All Shakespeare all the time…except when it’s not!”

dECOlonial Feelin Symposium and La Vaughn Belle Exhibitions
September 19 and 20, Emory College, Emory University Libraries, the Michael C. Carlos Museum, and the Clark Atlanta University Art Museum will host dECOlonial Feelin, an international symposium that raises awareness of lingering coloniality in the Virgin Islands and offers a space to engage with ecological thought and anticolonial practice. Led by Emory Professor of English and Creative Writing Tiphanie Yanique, this two-day symposium uses art, poetry, archives, philosophy, storytelling, anthropology, and spiritual practice led by the Virgin Islands Studies Collective as lenses through which to engage in this meaningful work.
A major component of the symposium is the opening of two exhibitions featuring the work of the internationally acclaimed artist La Vaughn Belle. Come Ruin or Rapture, opening in the Carlos Museum’s John Howett Works on Paper Gallery, includes work from two of Belle’s series, Storm (in the time of
spatial and temporal collapse) and Storm (how to imagine the tropicalia as monumental) where she uses materials from her studio that were exposed to Hurricane Maria in 2017. These repurposed materials take on new forms and express the resilience of people of African descent in the U.S. Virgin Islands in the face of both natural disasters and colonial powers.
The exhibition A Haunting Between Us, at Clark Atlanta University Art Museum, displays work from Belle’s Swarm series, which delves into the Danish colonial archives and uses photographic images from the Danish West Indies. Belle reimagines these images through a method of cutting and burning that not only changes them but utterly transforms their colonial context by removing black bodies from scenes of servitude and highlighting them as subjects of strength and perseverance. Both exhibitions will be on view September 19 through December 8.

The company is not resting on its laurels by any means, looking for new ways to challenge audiences and production personnel. “All of our shows are now being built in-house, in our new
scenic facility,” says DeLancey, “and while that means we’re taking on a host of added creative challenges, it also means that things get designed and built for the specific needs of the Byers Theatre.”
Season seven will kick off September 6 when The Music Man, its memorable cast of characters, and feel-good Meredith Willson’s tunes, march into the Byers Theatre for a 3-week run. “I don’t believe there’s another classic American musical with as much ridiculous fun in it as The Music Man,” says Director of Media and Marketing Mason Wood. “And with this creative team, and this cast of performers, I don’t see how anyone is going to be able to resist this production.”
After The Music Man, the season continues in December with the regional premiere of Frozen. “Expectations are high for that one,” says Wood. “But with a team that delivers time and time again for us, this latest Disney musical should have no trouble delighting holiday audiences.”
