Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center looks forward to the holiday season with special appearances by songstress and activist Judy Collins, crooner Johnny Mathis, Christian rockers Newsboys, the venerable Vienna Boys Choir, and a sparkling concert with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on New Year’s Eve! Go to citysprings.com for all the details.
Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal triumphs, and social activism. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly, as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 50-album body of work. See her on November 8.
The next night, November 9, crooner Johnny Mathis sings straight to your heart with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra. Best known for his supremely popular hits like “Chances Are,” “It’s Not For Me To Say,” and “Misty,” Mathis has recorded close to 80 albums, produced seven Christmas albums, and sold millions of records worldwide.
With a decades-spanning career and
a catalog blending different styles and genres, award-winning Newsboys have propelled hits like “We Believe” and “Born Again” up the charts. They’ve brought their live show to many corners of the world, all while in constant pursuit of reinvention and inspiration, and following their calling. They’ll be at Sandy Springs PAC November 23.
The Vienna Boys Choir has been delighting music lovers across the globe for six centuries with purity of tone, distinctive charm and popular repertoire. Christmas in Vienna, December 19, showcases these gifted musicians with voices of unforgettable beauty in an extraordinary program featuring Austrian folk songs, classical masterpieces, popular songs and, of course, holiday favorites.
Your New Year’s Eve will start with a WOW: Verdi’s La forza del destino kicks off a varied program by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra that includes sumptuous music from Hansel & Gretel, party music from Chabrier, and Offenbach’s Can-Can. And no New Year’s Eve concert would be complete without Strauss’ On the Beautiful Blue Danube and Radetsky March!

Shen Yun Brings 5,000 Years of Civilization to Atlanta
Exquisite beauty from the heavens. Profound wisdom from dynasties past. Discover authentic Chinese culture, as Shen Yun Performing Arts, the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, comes to Atlanta’s Symphony Hall in December.
Shen Yun, a New York-based company, was founded in 2006 by an impressive group of Chinese artists. Their dream was to create a renaissance for mankind’s most ancient heritage. Today, their wish has become an international phenomenon.
Shen Yun performs in 150 cities worldwide. With breathtaking dances, gorgeous costumes, live orchestra, and dynamic backdrops, this is a show brimming with themes of courage, hope, and triumph of good over evil. Shen Yun is the world’s only company depicting Chinese culture as it had been before it was nearly destroyed by decades of communist rule.
Each year, the company debuts a new lineup of original music and choreography, ranging from classical Chinese dance to traditional ethnic and folk dance styles to
theatrical depictions of beloved stories.
At the performance’s core is classical Chinese dance. This is the same richly expressive art form that had once been performed in front of emperors in palace halls. Today, it has evolved into one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.
Shen Yun features hundreds of handmade costumes — showcasing apparel from China’s 5,000 years of history. Their exquisite colors blend seamlessly with the animated backdrops, instantly transporting the audience to another world. The animation also contains a few surprises, but those are best left for the performance.
In this holiday season, Shen Yun’s warm embrace of this ancient heritage is a great way to celebrate holidays, and is a highly accessible, enlightening, and entertaining experience.
Shen Yun is at Atlanta Symphony Hall from December 23 to December 27, and at Cobb Energy Centre from Jan 31 to Feb 2. For tickets and more information, visit http://www.shenyun.com/Atlanta.

Arís Puts a Panto in Your Stocking
Winter is a mysterious, mystical time of year, with all manner of magic associated with it. From ancient solstice rituals to modern Christmas myths, this darkest season often sheds a particular, if peculiar, light on the doings of the human animal. We come together to observe and participate in curious celebrations of each other and the world around us.
One such holiday tradition is the panto. A panto (or pantomime) is a theatrical form descended directly from Commedia dell’Arte, the 16th century Italian entertainment which gave us such stock characters as Harlequin, Scaramouche, Pantaloon, Punch, and Columbine. As the form spread across Europe and the British Isles, it changed and adapted. By the Victorian Era, panto was a world of its own, inhabited by fairy-tale characters, and the traditional panto dame, a female role played by a man.
Characterized by broad comedy, upbeat musical numbers, and audience participation, the panto starts with a typical children’s fairy tale such as Cinderella or
Jack and the Beanstalk, and turns it into a rip-roaring event lampooning ourselves, our society, and often even theatre itself.
As old as its roots are, the panto tradition is with us still, alive and well and employed every holiday season in the British Isles and elsewhere. No Christmas season is complete without a holiday panto to add peals of laughter to the raucous winter merry-making.
Last year (2023), Arís presented the first traditional panto ever performed in Atlanta, “Cinderella”, by Irish playwright Karl Harpur. This winter Arís has a bit of fun with the classic “Aladdin & The Magic Lamp”. Join us on a journey to the not-sofar-away Academy Theatre in Hapeville, where you will meet Aladdin, his wishful twin, their busybody mum, a princess who wants to know what love is, and a Genie that will make you wish for more wishes so you can see it all over again!
“Aladdin and The Magic Lamp” runs December 6-22 at the Academy Theatre in Hapeville. For tickets, visit aristheatre.org.

TRudolph the Red-Nosed ReindeerTM Returns Along with Special Museum Puppets at Atlanta’s Center for Puppetry Arts
his holiday season, don’t miss out on one of Atlanta’s favorite traditions.
From November 14 to December 29, the Center for Puppetry Arts (1404 Spring St NW, Atlanta, GA 30309) will bring to life the beloved tale of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer™ in a captivating and familyfriendly performance. Based on the 1964 Rankin/Bass stop-motion television special, this show celebrates the timeless themes of friendship, bravery, and self-acceptance through the wonder of fully-stage puppetry.
Watch as Rudolph, Santa, Yukon Cornelius, and even the Abominable Snowman embark on their charming journey to the North Pole right before your eyes in a breathtaking performance.
A Must-See Holiday Exhibition
This year’s new additions bring lesser-known stories and artists to the forefront and highlight traditions from both Jewish and Christian holidays. Along with the performance, the Festive Features exhibition showcases a curated collection of puppets from holiday productions on the stage and screen running from November 12 to December 29. The fan-favorite pieces include a pair of original Santa and Rudolph stop-motion puppets, alongside new
additions like the whimsical puppets from The Famous Chelm Players, which celebrate Jewish traditions like Hanukkah. New Yorkbased puppeteer Robert Rogers created The Famous Chelm Players based on the famous Eastern European folk characters of the Wise Men of Chelm to animate the stories of Jewish holidays.
Also new this year, the exhibition will include Jane Henson’s masterful Nativity Story, a large-scale Christmas crèche created with puppets by Jane Henson, cofounder of The Jim Henson Company and wife of Jim Henson. Popular in Christian art for centuries, nativity scenes helped people feel more immersed in the story of Jesus’ birth. Henson’s Nativity Story brings the scene to life through puppetry. Few of Jane Henson’s works are on display in museums or public collections, making the Center’s exhibit a unique opportunity to see her craft.
Plan Your Visit
Tickets include museum admission, a hands-on Create-A-Puppet Workshop™, and free parking in Midtown Atlanta. The Center for Puppetry Arts invites everyone to gather with loved ones and celebrate the rich traditions that unite us this time of year through the art of puppetry. Join us at 1404 Spring St NW, Atlanta, GA 30309.
A Festive Season of Arts at Oglethorpe: Music, Mythology, and More
Discover Oglethorpe University’s thriving arts community! Here, it’s all about the experience — for our students and our audiences.
Conant Performing Arts Center, the university’s premier venue, stages both student and professional theatre productions and music performances throughout the year.
First up this season is the annual Fall Music Gala, a free event featuring performances from all of Oglethorpe’s musical ensembles. Enjoy an evening of classical and contemporary music with the Oglethorpe University Singers, Chorale, Symphony, and Singers. This gala is a festive showcase of the diverse talents within the university’s music department.
Next, the Oglethorpe University Theatre brings to the stage “In the Red and Brown Water,” a play inspired by African and Caribbean mythology. This compelling drama follows a young woman who sacrifices her dream of becoming a track star to care for her ailing mother, delving into themes of family, duty, and self-discovery.
Finally, the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art invites guests to a free day of performances by Deaf and disabled artists, complementing two unique, interactive exhibits, “The Gaze” and “Feel the Music.” These exhibits highlight the
works of Deaf and disabled artists, offering a unique opportunity to experience art from diverse perspectives.
Plus, Oglethorpe University and Atlanta-based theatre company Actor’s Express recently announced their upcoming co-production: “Marie Antoinette.” Queen Marie Antoinette is a product of unadulterated extravagance and indulgence. However, things turn sour when the royal family’s popularity plummets and salacious rumors about Marie clang through the streets of France to the thrum of revolution; the clinking of crystal glasses devolves into the clatter of the guillotine. In this hilarious and audacious take on history’s most provocative icon, this young queen’s survival will hardly be a piece of cake.
This exciting endeavor marks the fourth consecutive year of collaboration between Oglethorpe University and Atlantabased theater company Actor’s Express.
“Marie Antoinette” follows three immensely successful productions that featured both professional and student actors performing together on the Conant stage.

The Magical, Musical Journey of “Pippin” from Kennesaw State University
Kennesaw State University’s Department of Theatre and Performance Studies (TPS) is excited to announce its upcoming production of the Tony Award-winning musical “Pippin,” running Nov. 7-17 at the Stillwell Theater.
This vibrant production brings to life the timeless story of Pippin, a young prince in search of purpose and fulfillment. Set against the backdrop of a traveling performance troupe, “Pippin” invites audiences on a fantastical journey filled with dazzling choreography, unforgettable songs by Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked,” “Godspell”), and a captivating exploration of ambition, identity, and meaning.
Chuck Meacham, chair of TPS, believes this production will deliver a fresh take on the beloved musical while staying true to its core themes. “This is a show about exploration,” he explains. “It’s about finding your way in a world full of illusions and distractions. It speaks to audiences of all ages, especially our students who are themselves navigating the transition to adulthood.”
TPS faculty member Timothy Ellis directs the production, which he counts as one of his all-time favorite musicals. (He played
the lead role at Pebblebrook High School in Mableton, Ga., 40 years ago!) He says it’s been a joy to direct the student cast of 30, representing some of Kennesaw State’s most talented performers bringing their high energy to the fully-staged production. Audiences will be mesmerized by the dynamic set designs, colorful costumes, and engaging choreography by guest choreographer Kari Twyman. The choreography is a nod to the original Bob Fosse production from 1972.
The musical remains relatable today because it’s the journey of a young person into adulthood. Ellis explains, “Our students can connect because Pippin is journeying into his adulthood with innumerable questions about the future. I’m honing in on the voices that we seek to hear from — the voices that they think know better —that may either encourage you or steer you the wrong way. In essence, it’s choosing between reality and non-reality, between the true and the magical.”
Patrons will have Magic to Do if they see “Pippin” at the Stillwell Theater on the Kennesaw campus November 7-17. Buy tickets online at ticketing.kennesaw.edu or call 470-578-6650.
