The Alliance Theatre’s 56th Season Features World Premieres and New Works

The new season will feature award-winning plays, world premieres, and works developed for youth and families. In the fall, the Alliance will produce PEARL CLEAGE’S SOMETHING

MOVING: A MEDITATION ON MAYNARD — a new play by Pearl Cleage written for the 50th anniversary of the landmark election of Maynard Jackson as Atlanta’s first Black mayor.  This limited engagement will run on the Hertz Stage, August 2–11, 2024.

On The Coca-Cola Stage, Alliance will produce THE MOUNTAINTOP, a gripping reimagining of events the night before the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Olivier Awardwinning play offers an intimate and empathetic portrait of one of history’s most consequential figures told by one of today’s most important writers, Pulitzer Prize winner Katori Hall (The Hot Wing King).  THE MOUNTAINTOP is directed by Jennings Hertz Artistic Director Tinashe Kajese-Bolden.

The Alliance will then produce the critically acclaimed play by Lloyd Suh, THE CHINESE LADY. Inspired by the true story of the first Chinese woman to set foot in

America, it is a unique portrait of a young country struggling with its identity and role in the world as seen through the eyes of an idealistic migrant. For the holidays, the Alliance will present the timeless Dickens story, A CHRISTMAS CAROL on The CocaCola Stage, November 9 – December 24.

On the Hertz Stage, the Alliance will produce the world premiere of the 21st winner of the celebrated Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, BUSINESS IDEAS, by Milo Cramer from the University of California San Diego.

Inspired by Cramer’s experiences with his enterprising mom, BUSINESS IDEAS is a cross-generational comedy about wealth — who has it and why? — and the value we place on it. Theatrical Outfit’s Artistic Director Matt Torney directs.

Founded in 1968, Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. The Alliance is led by Jennings Hertz Artistic Directors Tinashe Kajese-Bolden and Christopher Moses, and Managing Director Mike Schleifer. Get tickets at alliancetheatre.org.

Meet the cast of City Springs Theatre Company’s upcoming Jersey Boys!

Director Shane DeLancey had his hands full when casting the upcoming City Springs Theatre Company production of the musical hit Jersey Boys. “The turnout at the auditions in terms of talent was overwhelming,” says DeLancey. “There were a number of performers who had already done the show, which is always a bonus, but in this case the four leads that fit together best were all first-time Jersey boys.”

Leading the cast of the July 12-August 11 show is Haden Rider as Frankie Valli. Haden is a CSTC veteran, and a familiar face to theatergoers across the Atlanta area, with memorable recent roles in CSTC Legally Blonde (Emmett) and Fiddler on the Roof (Perchik). He’ll be joined by another CSTC audience-favorite Nick Walker Jones, who has played memorable roles in Monty Python’s Spamalot (Lancelot), Beauty and the Beast (Lumiere), and most recently, Legally Blonde (Warner). Jones plays The Four Seasons’ Bob Gaudio, alongside newcomer Alec Beard as Tommy DeVito, and JD Myers (CSTC’s West Side Story) as Nick Massi.

Returning to the Byers Theatre stage are Tyler Pirrung (as famed music

producer and songwriter Bob Crewe), as well as performers Rob Millerick (as Hank Maajewski), Amanda Fallon Smith (as Lorraine), and ensemble members Mallory Nolting, Meredith C. Rhines, Ruby Calamia, and Zachary Pritts.

Making their City Springs Theatre Company debuts are Chris Damiano (as Gyp DeCarlo), Chloe Cordle (as Frankie’s wife, Mary Delgado), Jordan Sam Rich (as Norm Waxman), Rayvon Love (as Barry Belson), Frankie Marasa 5th (as Joe Pesci), Samantha Lane (as Frankie’s daughter Francine), and ensemble members Claudio Pestana, Asher Patten, Branden Hembree, and Keely Cauble.

In addition to DeLancey as director, Broadway veteran Meg Gillentine will choreograph the show, with Miles Plant (CSTC’s Anything Goes, Fiddler on the Roof) returning to music direct and conduct the show, which will feature musicians on and off the stage for the production.

Jersey Boys is City Springs Theatre Company’s most-ambitious effort yet, with five full weekends of performances at the Byers Theatre at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center.  Tickets are available at CitySpringsTheatre.com

Atlanta Master Chorale — Our 40th Season Begins

Join us in celebration of our anniversary season of “music

that touches spirit.”

We open with Choral Tapestry on October 11 & 12, a reminder of the complexity and beauty of choral music we will celebrate all year. Viewed closely, a tapestry is a group of randomly arranged colorful threads. But from further away, we discover the threads are thoughtfully placed to form a design of exquisite beauty. Similarly, in choral music each voice and part of the music is distinct, yet when carefully arranged by a great composer, the voices swirl together in harmonies more than the sum of the parts.

Christmas with Atlanta Master Chorale has become one of the region’s annual holiday traditions. Awaken your holiday spirit with us on December 13, 14, and 15. While some pieces will be familiar, there are always surprises, and the audience sing-along never fails to disappoint. Plus, tickets make welcome holiday gifts.

The anniversary festivities continue with our March concert, Pathways, on March 14

and 15. Life is full of large and small choices about paths, from love to work to trips. Even if we are fortunate enough to know where we are headed, we may not be sure what path to take to get there. This concert will encourage us to set out on a journey. Who knows where the music will take us?

A major work closes our season May 2 and 3. In An Evening with Mozart, we will be joined by an orchestra to perform two of the composer’s celebrated works, The Coronation Mass, and Requiem. You won’t want to miss this stunning finale.

All performances are at Emory University’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. For concert dates/times, ticketing, and other information, please visit www.atlantamasterchorale.org. Discounts are available for groups, seniors, and students. And Georgia teachers can attend Friday night performances for free through our Tickets for Teachers program. NBAF 2024 Theme: Artistry Unbound!

At NBAF, we believe that art is not just about creating beauty, it’s a call to address the issues of the day in new and creative ways.

Art has the power to incite change in the world and in the individual. Beyond creating what may seem frivolous to some, we look to art to inspire and energize us as we face our daily struggles. It is its own form of evolution, encouraging us to be better and do better than we have been or than has been done to us. It calls us to find creative solutions to the problems we face as a people and a nation.

As the vanguard organization promoting and presenting the best in Black art, NBAF is always striving to innovate in the field, to find creative solutions to the obstacles that we face, and to present our work in ways that set the standard.

NBAF’s 2024 theme, Artistry Unbound is an exploration of the resounding power of African American art to propel us toward the realization of our collective freedom.

This theme celebrates the profound contributions of African American artists in their relentless pursuit of social justice, equality, and financial equity. It celebrates the trailblazers who have paved the way for a new generation of artists, continuing the legacy of social commentary and artistic innovation. This theme calls us to be “Black on purpose” and create programs that directly speak to the injustices that we still face as a people and find artistic and creative ways to address these issues. Help NBAF answer the call by contributing $36 to help us reach our $36,000 annual individual donation goal! Your support helps sustain NBAF’s yearround, high-quality public programs, youth-focused initiatives, and artist grant and professional development opportunities, enabling thousands of people around the country to experience the transformative power of Black art.
