GREETINGS FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends and Supporters: Welcome to the 2012 National Black Arts Festival presented by The Coca-Cola Company. The U.S. Congress recognized the National Black Arts Festival as the “premier festival of its kind in the United States” (H. Res 1286). We remain dedicated to our mission—to engage, cultivate and educate diverse audiences about the arts and culture of the African Diaspora and to provide opportunities for artistic and creative expression—which sets the National Black Arts Festival apart from other festival events. This year’s National Black Arts Festival, themed Connecting Communities, brings together diverse communities of various ages, nationalities, ethnicities and means. It is important to us for everyone to be able to participate in our annual summer Festival. To that end, we are presenting a variety of world-class programs, the majority of them free and open to the public. From July 6th through the 15th the National Black Arts Festival offers free art exhibits, community concerts, workshops, special events at senior centers, children’s programming, film screenings and more. In keeping with the Connecting Communities theme, NBAF is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence at the National Black Arts Festival with free events including art exhibits, concerts and artist talks. The centerpiece of the Festival is four days of free summer fun with NBAF @ Centennial Olympic Park, July 12th through the 15th! Activities at the park include the International Marketplace, with vendors and artists from around the world, offering shoppers a unique array of items to choose from. Families can learn how to prepare healthy meals with cooking demonstrations by chefs at the Publix Healthy Cooking Pavilion on Saturday and Sunday. Our highly anticipated Children’s Education Village: Destination Afrika and Beyond offers families and children a fun and extraordinary opportunity to learn about Africa through hands-on activities, a Radio Disney experience and much more! The Main Stage will feature children’s programming during the day and familyfriendly programming in the evening. There will be some special surprises at the park as well. We encourage you to bring your family and spend the weekend in the park with us. While most of the programming is free, the Festival will feature several very special ticketed events this year. First, is Slavery by Another Name: The Dialog, a ground-breaking panel discussion, moderated by award winning journalist Cynthia A. Tucker, which examines author Douglas A. Blackmon’s expose about forced labor of imprisoned African American men and women through the convict lease system. Second, is True Colors Theatre Company’s production of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” with a great cast featuring Phylicia Rashad of The Cosby Show. We are also honoring legendary actress Ruby Dee who will make a rare public appearance at the NBAF Gala: A Ruby Evening. There is really something for everyone at this year’s Festival. As you review this program, you will find information on all Festival events, so plan your itinerary and take MARTA to all the Festival events. This is an exciting time in the history of NBAF. As we stand on the threshold of our 25th anniversary in 2013, we hope you are as excited about the future of NBAF and the National Black Arts Festival as we are. We ask you to join us as members, sponsors, volunteers and donors, and continue to support us as we present the art and culture and preserve the legacy of people of African descent. Thank you for your support and enjoy the 2012 National Black Arts Festival! Warm Regards, Michael Simanga, PhD Executive Director, NBAF 2012 NBAF Playbill

HUMANITIES HIGHLIGHTS Mississippi Delta farm town, lost episodes of the Civil Rights movement, and, repeatedly, the dilemma of how a contemporary society should grapple with a troubled past. Many of his stories in The Wall Street Journal explored the interplay of wealth, corporate conduct, the American judicial system, and racial segregation. International assignments have included the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the reunification of East and West Germany, the Civil War in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia, post apartheid South Africa and the international war crimes tribunal in the Hague. Political assignments have included the inauguration of President Barack Obama in 2008, presidential campaigns of 1988, 2002, 2008, and 2012, the post presidency of Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton while governor of Arkansas in the 1980s.
The Journal’s coverage of Hurricane Katrina received a special National Headliner award in 2006. In 2000, the National Association of Black Journalists honored Blackmon for his stories revealing the secret role of J.P. Morgan & Co. during the 1960s in funneling funds to opponents of the Civil Rights Movement.
Blackmon is also a co-founder and board member of two socially and ethnically diverse charter schools serving more than 600 students, including his own two children, in grades kindergarten through eight in the inner city of Atlanta.
Prior to his work at The Wall Street Journal, Blackmon covered race and politics at the Atlanta Journal Constitution for seven years. His reporting on corruption at Atlanta City Hall in the 1990s helped lead to the conviction and imprisonment of eight city officials, including two former councilmen and the city’s chief investment officer.
In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, Slavery by Another Name was a New York Times bestseller in both hardback and soft cover editions, and was awarded a 2009 American Book Award, the 2009 Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters non-fiction book prize, a 2008 Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights Book Award, the NAACP Freedom Fund Outstanding Achievement Award, and many other citations. He has been honored by the state legislature of Georgia for distinguished scholarship and service to history. In 2010, he received the Grassroots Justice Award from the Georgia Justice Project.
Slavery by Another Name grew out of his 2001 article on slave labor in The Wall Street Journal. It revealed the use of forced labor by dozens of U.S. corporations and commercial interests in coal mines, timber camps, factories and farms in cities and states across the South, beginning after the Civil War and continuing until the beginning of World War II. Janet Maslin wrote in the New York Times that the book is “relentless and fascinating” and “will now haunt us all.” New York University Pulitzer Prize winning historian David Levering Lewis says the book reveals “an America holocaust that dare not speak its name, a rivetingly written, terrifying history of six decades of racial degradation in the service of white supremacy.” Bill Moyers called Slavery by Another Name “brilliant” reporting. Cynthia Tucker, Pulitzer winning editorial page editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote that Slavery by Another Name “illuminates … an ignominious economic system that depended on coerced labor and didn’t flinch from savagery toward fellow human beings. Blackmon’s exhaustive reportage should put an end to the oft-repeated slander that black Americans tend toward lawlessness.”
Blackmon is co-executive producer of a documentary film based on Slavery by Another Name, which is currently in production and scheduled for broadcast on PBS in the winter of 2012. Directed by distinguished filmmaker Sam Pollard, the film completed principal photography in May 2011,with more than $1.5 million in funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Kellogg Foundation, and corporate sponsors. Blackmon is a much sought after lecturer on race, history and social memory. In Spring 2010, he was invited by Attorney General Eric Holder to present a lecture to senior Department of Justice of officials in Washington D.C. He also has lectured at Harvard School of Law, Yale University, the New School, Emory University, Vanderbilt School of Law, the Clinton and Lincoln presidential libraries, and many other institutions. 2012 NBAF Playbill

SAM POLLARD is an accomplished feature film and television video editor, and documentary producer/director whose work spans almost thirty years. He recently served as Producer and Supervising Editor on the Spike Lee directed HBO documentary If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise, a five year follow up to the Emmy and Peabody award-winning When The Levees Broke. His first assignment as a documentary producer came in 1989, for Henry Hampton’s Blackside production Eyes On The Prize II: America at the Racial Crossroads. For one of his episodes in this series, he received an Emmy. Eight years later, he returned to Blackside as Co-Executive Producer/Producer of Hampton’s last documentary series I’ll Make Me A World: Stories of African-American Artists and Community. For the series, Mr. Pollard received The George Peabody Award.
Working since the summer of 2008, Morris has created a body of work that addresses, reflects and responds to slavery in Savannah, as well as re-enslavement throughout the South after the Civil War. His stories retell little-known, but monumentally horrific episodes in American history. His work has evolved in three phases, beginning with the Savannah-inspired pieces created shortly after he read a draft of Blackmon’s book. The manuscript gave Morris a new perspective about the South’s history. “Slavery was no longer in a tidy time period,” he explains. Beginning with Savannah, his home since 2002, Morris reflected on his surroundings and the city’s darker past. After receiving a favorable response to his first creations, Morris broadened his work to include examples composed of images and scenes depicted in Blackmon’s book. As a tenth-gen-

As well, Mr. Pollard and Mr. Lee co-produced a number of documentary productions for the small and big screen: Spike Lee Presents Mike Tyson, a biographical sketch for HBO for which Mr. Pollard received an Emmy, Four Little Girls, a featurelength documentary about the 1963 Birmingham church bombings which was nominated for an Academy Award and When The Levees Broke, a four part documentary that 2012 NBAF Playbill

His last and most recent phase places emphasis on materials from the period. From Georgia to North Carolina, Morris hunts and collects objects from junkyards and flea markets. By repurposing the materials, Morris creates new visual images that force viewers to reconsider our collective past. With this many seniors going to college, a high-five just wouldn’t cut it. Thanks to you, over 1.4 million Georgia high school seniors have had something more to celebrate on graduation day—the chance to go to college. Every time you play the Georgia Lottery, you help fund the HOPE Scholarship Program that provides Georgia students with financial assistance at any of Georgia’s colleges, universities or technical colleges. That’s awesome! And on top of that, you’ve helped send over 1.1 million 4-year-olds to a Lottery-funded Pre-K Program and raised more than $13.6 billion for education. That’s an A+ in our book.
