GREETINGS FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Welcome to the 26th year of the National Black Arts Festival! We appreciate our corporate and foundation sponsors along with the many individuals whose generosity allows NBAF to host this year’s incredible range of events. NBAF is the only festival of its kind in Atlanta that brings together artists of African descent in the areas of dance, theater, film, music and visual arts. In fact, it is the longest-running multidisciplinary arts festival of the African Diaspora in this country. On the heels of a successful 25th anniversary season in 2013, we are proud to introduce you to the new NBAF. Our 2014 season is grounded in a fresh Strategic Vision that begins with the foundation of building local and national partnerships to bring compelling programming of the African Diaspora to Atlanta while empowering others along the way. This bold new vision will take us into the future and allow NBAF to become a national leader in the development of new work by artists of African descent. This season, NBAF has commissioned three world premieres — in dance, spoken word and hip-hop theater — as we move forward in this new direction. The theme for this year’s festival is “Higher and Higher” and the artists that will be presented are some of the most well-known and accomplished in their fields. The heightened cultural offerings begin with the inaugural Spotlight Series, which digs deep into one of the five NBAF disciplines each year, and continue with the new NBAF Global event, annually highlighting one region of the Diaspora. We have added educational programming, such as the Youth Empowerment Series (YES!), and created a new awards show format for the Legends Celebration. This summer, NBAF unveils this fresh, long-term vision that builds on our proudest accomplishments while taking the Festival to a whole new level as we celebrate works and exhibitions from renowned legends as well as emerging young artists. I am honored to serve NBAF as Chair of the Board during this amazing transformation. I hope you will join us throughout the season to celebrate culture, support the arts and feel your spirits lift higher and higher.

NBAF STRATEGIC VISION

Entering its 26th year, NBAF has announced an exciting new Strategic Vision for 2014-2017, framed around seven strategic priorities which promote NBAF’s status as: 1. artistically world-class; 2. in vibrant partnerships with producing institutions in Atlanta and throughout the United States; 3. a leader in education and thought leadership on topics relevant to the art of people of African descent; 4. a vital part of the Atlanta and national communities; 5. recognized for its role as a springboard for new artists and new work; 6. supported by governance bodies at a financial level commensurate with the programmatic ambition; and 7. administratively sound, financially sound and diverse. The national black arts festival advances the art and artists of the African Diaspora, engaging children and adults as supporters, thinkers and creators on topics of social, historical, and economic importance, within a context of inclusivity, partnership, and unimpeachable artistic quality. NBAF will take concrete steps to achieve this vision every day. With the support of its loyal audiences, donors, and sponsors, and in partnership with artists and institutions in Atlanta and around the world, this year NBAF enters a new chapter. Join us this summer as NBAF’s star rises higher and higher. 2014 NBAF Playbill

NBAF STRATEGIC VISION This season’s programming is emblematic of the new vision: • Events in five artistic disciplines — dance, music, theater, visual arts and film — will take place throughout Atlanta. • Each year, the Spotlight Series will go deep into one of the five NBAF disciplines in a series Wynton Marsalis of events curated by a legendary artist. This year Third World is the year of music, and beginning on July 25 at Atlanta Symphony Hall, NBAF 2014 Music Legend and Series curator Wynton Marsalis performs with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. • Each year, NBAF Global will provide a high-energy showcase of one region of the Diaspora. In August, reggae superpowers Third World (NBAF 2013 Legend), British-Jamaican megastar Maxi Priest and Atlanta’s own Julie Dexter team up for a high-intensity, super-smooth evening at The Tabernacle. • The Youth Empowerment Series (YES!) ups the game for children and their families with the Atlanta premiere of a new hip-hop theater piece (Game On!), a spoken word intensive for teens, a national awards competition, and the Generations Project — a series of free master classes for

2014 MUSIC SEASON Spotlight Series Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet — Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton “Serious musicianship ... deeply satisfying.” Marsalis: Modern Life, Modern Music, an – Chicago Tribune evening curated specifically for NBAF by Marsalis, features original compositions by members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Marsalis describes the inspiration for the concert thus: “The DNA research is in. We are all descendants of Africa. Let’s celebrate the scientific death of tribalism. Modern life any person is related to all people, long before DNA told affords us the opportunity to choose our tribe by interest instead of genetics. Today, families are formed us it was so.” Friday, July 25 at Atlanta Symphony Hall across the superficial lines of race and nationality. They are more flexible and numerous. The divisive conventions, “I’ve selected artists whose virtuosity and dedication which force us into competing clans who wish to claim has earned the spotlight. In addition, I’m excited to bring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to Atlanta superiority over ‘others,’ are giving way to an emphasis on July 25 as part of the Spotlight Series.” on culture and its shared mythic symbols that unify us at the deepest levels of our collective consciousness. Duke – Wynton Marsalis Ellington said THE people are my people. Jazz knew that Heath Brothers Quartet Jimmy Heath Heath Brothers plus Jeremy Pelt offers Quartet plus Jeremy an evening of classics from Pelt - “…immensely the American Songbook sophisticated…” as well as signature — The New York Times compositions by Heath himself. Marsalis states, “NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath, brilliant instrumentalist, magnificent composer and arranger, is vital at 87 years old — when he walks into a Tootie Heath room, jazz history is made.” Saturday, August 23 at Rialto Center for the Arts Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet, performing hits from Marsalis’ new album, will feature Marsalis on vibraphones, Will Goble on bass, David Potter on drums 2014 NBAF Playbill
