A LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Vikki Millender-Morrow For three decades, NBAF has presented, advanced and celebrated the contributions and achievements of our emerging and established artists and spotlighted excellence in all disciplines of the arts. From Dance to Theater, Music, Film, Visual and Literary Arts. We have looked at the many ways creatives of the Diaspora have explored our history, identity and vision. These artists have moved us and shaped our culture and inspired our children. We celebrate them ALL and for our 30th Anniversary we chose to spotlight Visual Arts. This year, NBAF presented Fahamu Pecou with our 2018 Visual Artist Award and presented Radcliffe Bailey with one of our highest honors, our Luminary Award, for his excellence in Visual Arts. Radcliffe is internationally recognized and his works have been exhibited at top galleries throughout the U.S. Radcliffe began his career in Atlanta with the support of NBAF and was commissioned by NBAF to produce several works. Radcliffe’s influence has been transformative for young artists. Numerous aspiring artists learning from the trailblazers who preceded them, have deepened their creativity and launched careers. In support of our 2018 theme of Visual Arts, NBAF will include two extraordinary gallery exhibits, one exhibit that will take a historical look back at 30 years of NBAF. The other exhibit looks forward to showcase amazing visual artists who are exploring contemporary social, political and theoretical issues through their work. We will partner with the High Museum for jazz and with True Colors for a theater production. Ending our 30th Anniversary Season with a processional parade and a concert in the park. We hope everyone will join us for these celebrations of ART. Our audiences have been uplifted throughout our 30 years. We owe much gratitude to our supporters for the success of NBAF and what it has meant to our community. NBAF is now exploring our next 30 years to determine how best to leverage its rich history, iconic brand and deep connections to lift the next generation of artists. REIMAGINE NBAF — no longer just a festival but an experience — NBAF “Experience Black Art” Vikki Millender Morrow President & CEO

is thrilled to present Christina Ham’s Nina Simone: Four Women September 23 at 7pm. The play is set in 1963, the year Medgar Evers was murdered in Mississippi; the year four black children were killed in a church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama; the year Simone wrote “Mississippi Goddam,” the blistering activist anthem that was RMW photos by Tom Wallace banned in several Southern states. In her autobiography, Simone noted that she wrote the song in lieu of getting a gun. Regina Marie Williams, who portrayed Nina Simone at the plays premiere at Park Square Theatre in Minneapolis, will step into the role again for the play’s Atlanta debut. She shared her excitement for the role, “Sometimes Nina’s voice would be warm and soothing, other times angry and harsh, and then again light and sweet. Her voice, her music, made me feel.” She added, “Over the years I have performed in musicals and plays, comedy and tragedy, Shakespeare and Wilson. The variety has been a gift and will be an asset when working to access the brilliance, the vulnerable, the self-righteous, the human and the Goddess in Nina.” Christina Ham does a brilliant job of placing audiences in the space that most of us have only read about. They will revel in the familiar as well as be piqued by the new—an historical fact or Production photos by Petronella J. Ytsma, a line in Simone’s courtesy of Park Square Theatre music. Audiences will gain a deeper appreciation for the fact that she jeopardized her life and sacrificed her career by expressing her opinion with songs like Mississippi Goddam and Jim Crow.

MOVE/DANCE! PROGRAM Move/Dance Program The Move/Dance Program was established by the National Black Arts Festival in 2015. It brings much-needed arts education and physical education back into local Atlanta middle schools. The project encourages and nurtures the talent and the aspirations of middle school students while supporting the school, parents, and guardians with their academic as well as their health and wellness goals. As an interventionist project the Move/Dance Program marries the creative arts with the goal of addressing prevalent health issues such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity and other conditions that plague our communities, with fun dance lessons that support movement and exercise.

Create a New Dance Scholarship Competition Left: Aaliyah Chaney Right: Samantha White

The classroom experience is augmented with journal writing and research about the rich history of Black dance and about the dancers, choreographers and dance companies that have paved the way. The project also encourages the students to improve their communication and presentation skills in preparation for the public dance performance. The project also includes a “Create a New Dance” competition, and scholarships to enrich their arts exposure and training. NBAF’s Move/Dance! Program is now in several schools. To date, over 500 middle school children have participated in the Move/Dance Program. It is a successful program because it focuses on addressing the needs of the whole child—on supporting, nurturing, expanding and improving their creativity, talent, knowledge, academics and health. www.nbaf.org
