2013 NBAF 25th Anniversary Playbill
Greetings from the Board Chair Dear Friends and Supporters: In celebration of our 25th year as the nation’s premier convener of art, culture, and artists of African descent, the National Black Arts Festival extends a warm thanks to the Atlanta community and its surrounding areas for your support. We are especially grateful to the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, who created this institution and continue to nurture it, and also to our sponsors for their enduring and generous support for two and a half decades. We are thrilled to offer an extended season this summer — spanning the months of July, August and September — in celebration of our Silver Anniversary. From the Rialto to the Southwest Arts Center to Grant Park, NBAF covers the city with exciting new events that will offer something for everyone. The NBAF 25th Anniversary Festival highlights include: • The Annual Gala at the InterContinental Buckhead featuring Broadway legend Jennifer Holliday; • The Family Book Fair in July and August with surprise, guest storytellers; • The popular Legends Celebration, remembering 25 years of amazing moments and looking ahead to what’s next • A Question of Relevance: Black Culture and Expression in the 21st Century, a convening, featuring leaders in the fields of dance, music, visual arts, and other disciplines. We invite you to join the celebration as NBAF turns 25! Our Silver Anniversary Circle campaign is an opportunity to participate in an exclusive group of patrons in honor of NBAF’s 25 years of extraordinary programming and service to the Atlanta, national and international communities. By attending our programs and supporting the organization’s work through initiatives such as the Silver Anniversary Circle, we look forward to the role that you and others will play in this year’s celebration. As we look toward the future, we are excited to showcase new and emerging ideas alongside the signature programs you’ve come to expect. Throughout this year’s 25th anniversary celebration and for years to come, the National Black Arts Festival will continue to elevate and underscore our important role in promoting, celebrating and advancing the art and culture influenced by people of African descent — locally, nationally and internationally. Many thanks,
Sonya Halpern Board Chair, NBAF 2013 NBAF 25th Anniversary Playbill

Greetings from the Board of Commissioners of Fulton County Dear Friends, As the National Black Arts Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary, I take this opportunity to congratulate them on this milestone and thank them for the dynamic artistic and cultural offerings they have presented to us — residents and visitors alike — for the past two and a half decades. I am proud of the role that the Fulton County Arts Council, through the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, has played in increasing the vitality of this community through the arts. As a premiere arts agency, the Fulton County Arts Council provides more funding to arts organizations locally than any other single governmental agency in this state. Our support of programs such as the National Black Arts Festival — which was founded in 1988 by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners and has received major support since its inception — has helped to sustain and advance the arts in Fulton County for our residents and visitors. The National Black Arts Festival adds to the strength and diversity of our community by presenting established and emerging artists across many disciplines, nurturing a strong sense of community spirit, and bringing young and old together to be inspired, provoked and educated about the arts and culture of the African diaspora. More than a local event, it has gained a national and international reputation as the premier convener of arts, artists and culture of the African descent. On behalf of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners and the dedicated staff and members of the Fulton County Arts Council, I thank each of you for supporting the NBAF. We join with you in celebrating 25 years of dynamic programming and service to this community, as well as national and international audiences! Warm Regards,
John H. Eaves, Ph.D. Chairman, Fulton County Board of Commissioners

who surround her — and the powerful rituals connected to their dazzling hats. This jubilant musical traces the roots of Gospel through contemporary hip-hop, fusing rich storytelling with abundant “hattitude” into a stirring coming-of-age tale. Crowns is a not-to-bemissed celebration of song, dance, cultural history — and glamorous headwear. Featuring a guest performance by Pauletta Washington, who reprises her role as Wanda.
Written by Trey Anthony, Directed by Andrea Frye Friday, August 16, 7 PM, The Balzer Theater at Herren’s, 84 Luckie St., NW Tickets: $10 Andrea Frye directs this stage reading of Trey Anthony’s play. Set in a Caribbean hair salon in Toronto, da’ Kink in my Hair gives voice to eight black women who tell their unforgettable stories in a kaleidoscope of drumming, singing and dance. It is a testament to the challenges and triumphs in the lives of contemporary black women, many of who are immigrants to North America from the Caribbean. Mixing laughter and tears, revelation and inspiration, the unapologetically intense stories of each woman are woven together in this powerful piece.
