FROM OUR DIRECTOR Dear NBAF Friends and Patrons, Fresh off the heels of our 30th anniversary year, our Board and staff embarked upon an exciting strategic planning process to ensure that we continuously focus on building a world where the contributions of artists of African descent are celebrated, integrated and elevated in every form. As most of you know, NBAF has worked for several years to become known as more than a festival. Thanks to all of you for your encouragement for our transformation from a summer festival into a more sustainable, year-round arts organization. Over the past year, we’ve worked to cultivate year-round programming that impacts the future through youth education, supports emerging artists and provides festival-like arts programs for the public at various times and locations throughout the year. And we have already enjoyed great success by eliminating the barriers to exposure that were imposed by a defined season. These efforts further our mission to expose, educate, engage and entertain audiences as we present and support art and artists of African descent, while broadening cultural experiences for all. Our mission and our arts disciplines are the same, just no longer bound by time. To reflect the success of these efforts, we have started to refer to ourselves as the National Black Arts. We’re keeping the acronym NBAF because it has become a familiar and cherished brand across many communities and for many years. It also serves as a reminder, as we work every day to further the mission of the National Black Arts — we will Find it. We will Fund it. We will Feature it. And we will Fight for it. All with your continued support and patronage. With your help, guidance and vital support, the stage is set for NBAF to thrive for generations to come. We depend on YOU! Artfully yours, Vikki Millender Morrow President & CEO www.nbaf.org

as hypertension, diabetes, obesity and other conditions that plague our communities. Curriculum: The program has four components: teaching artists who teach various dance forms from the 18th to the 21st centuries. They also teach classroom etiquette and act as mentors and role models. Their lessons are based on a new curriculum on Black dance developed by NBAF to match the Atlanta School system’s curriculum standards and goals. The project also includes a “Create a New Dance” competition that provides scholarships opportunities for students to choreograph their own dance and present it at the final dance performance.
