CREATIVE PROCESS:

Gwinnett Performing Arts Center Caters to Community and Far Beyond

By Holley Calmes And the Gwinnett community is one of the most culturally diverse counties in the United States. The GPAC’s list of clients reflects this fact. “Japanfest, Kalavani Indian Dance, and TM Asian Cultural Arts perform here regularly among many other international groups,” says Selina Branstetter, Events Manager. The venue attracts more than locally grown fare. Desmond Richardson’s acclaimed “Complexions Contemporary Ballet Company” is leaving its base in New York City for Atlanta, and GPAC is to be their new performing home. Complexion’s first post-move performances will be October 8-10 on the GPAC’s spacious stage. What makes the venue so popular with audiences as well as renters? “Free parking is big!” states Miller. “And there is not a bad seat in the house.” “GPAC accommodates any type of event,” continues Miller. “From rehearsal dinners to Broadway shows, film festivals and dance competitions, we offer it all. We’ve recently presented ‘Menopause: The Musical,’ comedian Ron White, guitarist Tommy Emanuel, ‘Home By Dark’ (a song writers’ showcase,) and a child prodigy pianist named Ethan Bortinick.” “Our guests are important to us,” says Joseph Dennis, General Manager. “So whether you’re a patron coming in the front door or a client coming in the back door, we strive to make everyone’s experience memorable.”

I

t is now one of Gwinnett’s busiest intersections, but less than 15 years ago,Satellite Boulevard and Sugarloaf Parkway met in a dead end. Forward a mere decade or so, and there is no “dead end” of any kind. Now thousands of people flock to the area to enjoy a suburban lifestyle that borrows the best of urban amenities, especially in the area of performing arts. The Gwinnett Performing Arts Center is one of four major segments of Gwinnett Center which includes The Arena, The Gwinnett Convention Center, and The Hudgens Center for the Arts. GPAC, as locals call it, is one of the most highly sought venues for performing arts in Metro Atlanta with a waiting list for dates “a mile long.” A large stage, bountiful preparation space backstage for performers and crews, and an intimate, 708 seat seating capacity have presenters scrambling for dates. Its built-in technology is on par with any Broadway venue. Yet it is the amiable staff and commitment to community that serve GPAC best. “90% of our business is repeat business,” says Marketing and PR Manager Jaclyn Miller.” We specialize in continuity and continuation, and our best marketing has been word of mouth among area performing groups. We have taken great care to grow relationships within our community.”

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF WORLD-CLASS THEATRE IN THE HEART OF THE SOUTH by Katie Perkowski Cast of Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid

T

A Christmas Carol (adapted by ASF Producing Artistic Director, Geoffrey Sherman). We jazz things up with Ain’t Misbehavin’ January through February on the Festival Stage, while the classic fairy tale Cinderella plays for young audiences on the Octagon Stage. March comes in with a roar via White Lightning by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder, an exciting world premiere about moonshine running and the origins of NASCAR. Our season peaks in March through May with Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream on the Festival Stage and The Comedy of Errors on the Octagon Stage. Summer at ASF offers entertainment for the entire family with the musical spectacular, Disney’s Beauty & the Beast. For residents of Atlanta, ASF is the perfect weekend get-away. Montgomery is easy to navigate with a charming downtown area that includes many important Civil War and Civil Rights sites, from the White House of the Confederacy to the Martin Luther King’s Dexter Avenue church and the Rosa Parks Museum. Several weekends in the spring you can enjoy a “play-cation” and see multiple productions over a single weekend. Downtown hotel partner Embassy Suites offers a special rate for ASF patrons. Come play with us!

he 2015-16 season marks 30 years of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF) in Montgomery, Alabama. The theatre company, which began as a summer festival in Anniston, Alabama in 1972, quickly garnered a reputation for its high-caliber productions and was proclaimed the state theatre of Alabama in 1977. A $21.5 million dollar gift from philanthropist Wynton Blount saw the festival relocated to Montgomery, Alabama in its own 250-acre cultural park, where it was reinvented as a year-round repertory company. In the past 30 years ASF has seen over millions of visitors from all fifty states and over sixty countries. ASF mounts between eight to twelve productions a season, including works of Shakespeare, Broadway musicals, and new work developed through the Southern Writers’ Project, this year celebrating 25 years of bringing Southern plays to national stage, including notable titles Gee’s Bend, A Lesson Before Dying, Fair and Tender Ladies and Bear Country. The 2015-16 season is an exciting ride, opening October 8th with Alfred Uhry’s Driving Miss Daisy, then in November on to Alabama’s favorite holiday tradition, Dicken’s

H

aving launched the celebration of a half century anniversary last season, the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra (DSO) approaches the upcoming 2015-16 Season with a varied and exciting program that promises amazing artistic quality and major, acclaimed soloists. Music Director and Conductor, Fyodor Cherniavsky, has announced these classical centerpieces for the year: Opening the season in September, accomplished ASO players, Christopher Pulgram and Yang-Yoon Kim, will join the orchestra in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola. In November, Elizabeth Pridgen, described as a “big piano presence,” performs Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2; and the concert includes the world premiere commissioned by Georgia Perimeter College Foundation commemorating the joint anniversary of DSO and college — Laurence Sherr’s Doina & Dances Overture. The March concert features William Ransom, about whom a reviewer said, “He made the piano sing,” whose selections will be Bach’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Stravinsky’s Concerto for Piano and Winds. April’s concert is an All Orchestral Concert highlighting Borodin’s Symphony No. 2, nicknamed “Heroic Symphony.” In May, cellist Charae

Krueger will present Bloch’s Schelomo in which the cello represents the voice of King Solomon. In addition to this core of programming, June brings DSO’s free, community concert in downtown Decatur introducing Cuban-born classical guitarist, Rene Izquierdo, playing Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. While the summer Pops Concert soloist is still a surprise, that event is always a delightful opportunity for DSO to demonstrate what a swinging group they can be. Indeed, ask any kid who has attended DSO’s annual Children’s Concert held in January, and they can attest to how much fun the DSO is. This year is no exception as WSB’s Jovita Moore resumes her role as narrator when DSO invites children of all ages to travel musically “Around the World in 60 Minutes.” The DSO intentionally presents wonderful music that is accessible and affordable in a welcoming atmosphere. Most concerts are held at Georgia Perimeter College, Clarkston Campus, where DSO is in residence. A full year subscription is only $110; individual tickets are also available. Additional information and purchasing are available online at DeKalbSymphony.org or by calling 678-891-3565.

Daring Season Ahead for Actor’s Express

A

ctor’s Express will present a daring and highly theatrical 2015-2016 season that includes six stunning plays, three of which are world premieres. The season opens September 12 with Aaron Posner’s hilarious “sort-of-adaptation” of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, Stupid F*cking Bird. Directed by Freddie Ashley, this play has been a hit all over the country, and we expect no less in Atlanta. In October and November, Actor’s Express will produce two world premiere plays by Steve Yockey in repertory. Yockey penned previous AE hits Wolves and Pluto. The Thrush and the Woodpecker is a white-knuckled thriller full of the power and theatricality audiences have come to expect of Yockey, while Blackberry Winter, a National New Play Network (NNPN) Rolling World Premiere and Co-Production with Out of Hand Theater starring Carolyn Cook, is a poignant story of a woman caring for her Alzheimer’s-stricken mother. An electrifying production of the Sondheim masterpiece Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street starring Kevin Harry kicks off 2016 for a six-week run. Winner of eight Tony Awards, this production will explode off the stage with raw power and some of the best singing you’ll hear in Atlanta all year. In April Actor’s Express will stage its third world premiere of the season, Serial Black Face by Janine Nabers, an emotionally powerful piece about a mother coping with the disappearance of her young son set against the backdrop of the

Atlanta Child Murders. This piece is especially exciting given its connection to our city’s history. The season will close in May with Significant Other, a gay romantic comedy by Joshua Harmon, the writer of last season’s smash hit Bad Jews. Significant Other recently opened in New York City to rave reviews. In addition to its mainstage season, Actor’s Express will introduce Threshold, a new play reading festival scheduled for December 5-6. This season’s offerings are Obsession by Lee Nowell, I Love My Brother by Johnny Drago and Trick Church by S.M. Shepard-Massat. Libby Whittemore will return to Actor’s Express for three engagements throughout the season, continuing her cabaret series Libby’s at the Express. Season subscriptions to the 2015-2016 season at Actor’s Express start as low as $132. Both subscriptions and single tickets can be purchased at actors-express.com or by calling 404-607-7469.

onumental classics, world premieres, distinguished visitors and spectacular choral masterworks mark a year of celebration as the 2015-16 Atlanta Symphony Orchestra season honors the 100th birthday of the legendary Robert Shaw. The season includes many of the works most strongly associated with Shaw, pieces he conducted countless times. The season opens September 17, with Mahler’s Second Symphony conducted by Robert Spano. Mr. Spano will also conduct Verdi’s Requiem November 12-14, and the Brahms Requiem April 14-16. Country and Mo-town Team Up At Roswell Cultural Arts Center Growing up in South Carolina, Nikki Lane loved her mom’s Motown records and her dad’s country cassettes, but she’d also sneak to see alt-rock and punk shows. All of those influences come through on her new album, All or Nothin’, which was produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. Paste Magazine reviews this album saying “Lane defies convention with a record that evokes Dusty Springfield, Loretta Lynn and Jackie DeShannon.” This October, Nikki Lane will bring her rambunctious and fun performance to the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. Join us early for food and drinks sponsored by one of Roswell’s famed local restaurants. For tickets and more information visit www. roswellcac.com or call 770-594-6232.
