Exciting New Plays at the Alliance Theatre this Fall

T

he Alliance Theatre opened its 2016/17 season on August 18 with the world premiere musical, The Prom. Staged by the Tony Award-winning Director of The Book of Mormon, The Prom tells the story of Emma, whose high school cancels the prom after she announces her intentions to take her girlfriend. Sensing a chance to correct an injustice — and maybe get some good publicity along the way — a group of fading celebrities takes up her cause, and invades Emma’s small Indiana town. This hilarious and heartwarming musical about loving yourself and accepting differences is on the Alliance Stage through September 25. The Alliance’s Hertz Stage season will open on September 16, 2016, with the return of two-time Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition finalist, Lindsey Ferrentino, with her searing new play, Ugly Lies the Bone. Ugly Lies the Bone tells the story of one returning soldier’s search for physical and emotional healing following a traumatic injury. Playwright Lindsey Ferrentino was recently described by The New York Times as “a brave new playwright and a writer of dauntless conviction.”

The Alliance will also present a stunning adaptation of Moby Dick, originally produced by Chicago’s world renowned Lookingglass Theatre Company. The Chicago Sun-Times called Moby Dick “a triumph of grand theatrical imagination, deep thought, superb acting, and eye-popping, ingeniously deployed physical daring.” Bold trapeze and acrobatic work turn this seafaring American classic into a thrilling experiment in aerial storytelling. Lookingglass Theatre Company last performed on the Alliance Stage with Lookingglass Alice in 2010. Moby Dick runs on the Alliance Stage Oct. 12-30. The Alliance will also present the family productions — From Head to Toe, a production of the Kathy and Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young, designed for children under the age of 5 from Sept. 24 – Nov. 6, and Slur, a world premiere developed for middle school audiences from Nov. 5 – 12. Season tickets offer the best seats at the best rates. Tickets for individual productions are also available. WAR OF THE ROSES BEGINS TO BLOOM AT THE SHAKESPEARE TAVERN PLAYHOUSE

F

all brings all kind of beautiful colors to the city and it is no different at The Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse where the War of the Roses (White and Red) begins to bloom and the banners start to fly. Henry the Sixth Part One not only kicks off the start of the Atlanta Shakespeare Company’s 2016-2017 season, it begins a run-through of Shakespeare’s Histories in the order they were written. With the beginning of this play and this History series, the company enters the final stretch of producing Shakespeare’s entire canon for the second time in ASC’s existence. In 2011, the company became the first American theatre company to complete Shakespeare’s thirty-nine play canon. It took them twentysix years to finish. That same year they embarked on the Shakespeare Evolution Series, where they performed Shakespeare plays by genre (Comedy, Tragedy, Romance, History) in the order they were written. By the time the Evolution Series is over (2018), it will only have taken ASC less than ten years to complete.

Many surprises are in store for the audience when Henry the Sixth Part One opens in September. Mary Ruth Ralston will star as the gentle, young and inexperienced King. While this is not the first time a woman has played a male role on the Tavern stage, this will be the first time it has been a lead role. The interior of the theater will change slightly as well. Rather than the usual proscenium stage, the plays will be shown in the round, as close to the audience as possible. Seating will certainly be at a premium. A new LED lighting system will be installed to bathe the stage in a richer depth of color and emotion. A new painting of Queen Elizabeth by Atlanta artist James Weigle will match the portrait of Shakespeare hanging in the house. The first four Histories (Henry the Sixth Parts 1-3 and Richard The Third) will be performed in succession over the course of a few weekends throughout the season so that audiences can experience them not only in the order they were written, but in chronological order.

My First Broadway Show By Nicholas Carson

A

t age 14, I saw my very first Broadway show this summer: Disney’s Aladdin the Musical (www. aladdinthemusical.com). And while I hope to enjoy many more Broadway shows in my lifetime, I can’t imagine any of them measuring up to the magic and excitement of this one, and I know I will never forget it. I’ve seen Broadway shows on tour in Atlanta, so I thought a performance in New York wouldn’t be that different. Boy, was I wrong! First, the theaters are all grouped together at Times Square. They’re not spread out like they are here at home. That means all of the audience members are outside together before and after the shows and we can all see the huge signs and bright lights advertising the different productions. It was really exciting and fun. I also thought the theaters in New York would be much bigger than the ones I’ve been to at home like the Fox Theatre and Cobb Energy Center. Wrong again! Most of these theaters were built before actors used microphones, so they are small and intimate. All of the actors in Aladdin sang and danced as well as acted. Sets changed in the blink of an eye as scenery swooped in from above, below and each side of the stage. I’ve been in a school play and taken an acting class at Act3, so I know the actors can’t really see the audience when the bright lights are shining on them, but it felt like every actor on that stage looked right at me and made me part of the story. It was amazing. Thanks to my mom’s friend from Atlanta,

Cheryl Thomas, Hair and Makeup Supervisor for Aladdin, we were able to go backstage after the show and meet some of the cast. I talked to James Monroe Iglehart, who plays the Genie (and won a Tony Award). His role is so energetic, he told me it’s like being shot out of a cannon every night, because all of the action begins in an instant. I bet the dancers would say the same thing, because some of them spring onto the stage from a lift underneath that actually throws them into the air. The family in front of us at the theater was also from Atlanta and loved the show, too. Cheryl told us Aladdin is going on tour next year and I hope it comes here. I can’t wait to see it again! In the meantime, I’m going to try to figure out how they made that magic carpet fly.

Rialto Center for the Arts 100 Years and Running — Where Atlanta Meets the World

G

eorgia State’s Rialto Center for the Arts celebrates its centennial year with the 2016-2017 Rialto Series filled with fan favorites and new discoveries — from jazz artists to world musicians to dance. “We’re so proud to celebrate our 100th year in downtown Atlanta and our 20th year with Georgia State by bringing back favorites such as Brazil’s Balé Folclórico da Bahia and Sweet Honey in the Rock®,” said Leslie Gordon, Director of the Rialto. “We also have a few surprises to delight our audiences as we commemorate the Rialto’s 100 year history, such as the renowned Alloy Orchestra, performing live accompaniment to the sci-fi classic silent film “Metropolis” that played in the era when the Rialto was still a movie theater.” Considered “the largest motion-picture theater in the southeast”, when it opened in 1916, the Rialto is now the only remaining movie theater in downtown Atlanta. Today, the Rialto is the place Where Atlanta Meets the World. This season features 17 performances by national and international artists. The season kicks off with the political satire of The Capitol Steps just in time for the election. The Rialto is known for emblematic performances by jazz greats, contemporary dance and ground-breaking international musicians. International music programs include Jazz Masters: Ramsey Lewis, Jimmy Cobb, Lou Donaldson and Richard Davis; GRAMMYwinning jazz superstar Dianne Reeves; celebrated jazz innovators Chucho Valdes and

Joe Lovano Quintet; GRAMMY-winning salsa and Latin jazz pianist/composer Eddie Palmier; a musical voyage down the Nile with The Nile Project; and Bent Frequency performs the music of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams. The diverse dance programming includes remarkable, exhilarating architects of international movement: Israel’s Vertigo Dance Company, Cuba’s Malpaso, Brazil’s Balé Folclórico da Bahia, and Argentina’s Che Malambo. Rounding out the Series is the sweet blend of message and music by renowned a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock® and, new to Atlanta, the theatrical Kung Fu spectacle of China’s Shaolin Warriors: The Legend Continues. Rialto Series subscriptions are available now. Single tickets go on sale August 16, 2016, at rialto.gsu.edu, or (404) 413-9TIX (9849), or at the Rialto Box Office.

For more info please contact us at www.GeorgiaSymphony.org, 770-429-2390 A Bold Season for Synchronicity Theatre Synchronicity Theatre’s 2016-2017 season features bold, contemporary plays for adults (Bold Voices Series) and enchanting theatre for children and their families (Family Series). 2016-17 kicks off with the regional premiere of Howard Brenton’s Anne Boleyn, a fresh, tantalizing take on the familiar tale of romance, betrayal and political intrigue. Devout as she is ambitious, Anne navigates courtly love, lust and lies to secure her marriage to King Henry VIII and a Protestant reformation. Anne fulfills her calling to be England’s first Protestant queen, but keeping her crown — and her head — is a different matter. Directed by Richard Garner. Hamlet with a Twist Something may be rotten in Denmark, but there’s nothing rotten about Marietta New Theatre in the Square’s production of Hamlet. This classic Shakespearean tragedy is unlike you’ve ever seen it before — gender swapped. Princess Hamlet is visited by the ghost of her mother and called to seek revenge for the queen’s unjust death. Thus the exciting tale of vengeance and loyalty unfolds! Featuring bold new talent, a fresh vision, and a comfortable but intimate theatrical experience, Hamlet promises to deliver strong classical storytelling with a new modern twist.
