Alliance Theatre’s Susan Booth is “So Ready” to Start Making Theatre in the New Coca-Cola Stage By Holley Calmes
I
n 17 years at the Alliance Theatre, Susan Booth has been an integral force in creating numerous projects, birthing new plays, and ushering the Alliance to new artistic heights. Now she is “so ready to start making theatre in the new Coca-Cola Stage!” The new space was intentionally designed to expand the theatrical experience for patrons and artists, further enriching the Alliance’s 50th Anniversary Season. “It is truly a complete transformation of our theatre,” Booth explains. Some of the elements she is most excited about are state-of-the-art technology to support the artists’ work, a beautiful audience chamber to support the patron experience, and a designed sense of community that unites artists and audience. “The entire room is more intimate and closer to the stage,” she says. “The audience will feel more connected to each other and to the actors.” The new theatre incorporates a long list of enhancements, such as improved acoustics, which will facilitate realizing what Booth sees as theatre’s purpose. “Theatre has a responsibility to be a convener and connector of its community, a kind of town square where we come together to understand all the things that unite and divide us,” she explains.
Under Booth’s artistic direction, the Alliance continues to be this advocate for Atlanta, a “deeply complex American city that is wildly rich in its diversity of voices, cultures, beliefs and aesthetics. That makes the convening even more necessary,” she says. The upcoming season will include audiences convening to experience new works. “Premieres are important to our DNA,” Booth states. “Both as a theatre and as a city. When an audience meets a new work for the first time, they do so on a level playing field. Nobody’s privileged; we’re all having this fantastic experience that’s going to open our hearts and minds in some fashion.” One such premiere, in January 2019, will be the first production performed on the renovated Coca Cola Stage. The play is a Cinderella themed new musical titled “Ever After,” and it has Booth auditioning actors in New York City. “I make sure they know that Southern Hospitality is real,” she says. “It doesn’t look like mint juleps on the porch. It looks like candid inquiry, a real commitment to connect across difference, and a desire for open dialogue and shared experience. I tell them they will leave and tell their friends, ‘you HAVE to go to Atlanta. It’s amazing.’ And they do.”

he 2018-2019 LIVE! in Roswell season kicks off in October with Backstage and Other Stories: Confessions of a Broadway Star — an original one-woman show conceived and performed by Terry Burrell. Atlanta theatre patrons will know Terry from her many performances at top theatre companies around town. But she is also a hugely accomplished Broadway musical actress with credits including the original production of Dreamgirls and starring roles in major productions of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods, Eubie, and Swinging on a Star. She also starred as Julie in the first London production of Showboat. Backstage and Other Stories is Terry’s newest solo concert, and in this delightful evening of memories and melodies, Terry spills the beans and then some! This rare and candid glimpse of life as a performer on the Great White Way will include special vocal arrangements from Terry’s illustrious career — songs that hold special meaning for Terry as well as tributes to the legendary chanteuses who inspired her — from Lena Horne and Barbra Streisand to Ethel Waters, Eartha Kitt and Judy Garland. Backstage and Other Stories will premiere at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, October 13 at 8 pm. Other performances in the LIVE! in Roswell Series include Classic Nashville Christmas, a holiday
concert starring Katie Deal & Jason Petty on December 22. On February 16, 2019, Ranky Tanky will perform their jazz-influenced take on traditional Gullah music that has created a stir on the national music scene. Award-winning Bluegrass quintet Balsam Range will close out the season with a special performance featuring the Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble on June 8. 2019. Individual show tickets are $30 per person; LIVE! in Roswell Season Tickets are $100 per person. For younger audiences, the Story Pirates Greatest Hits Show takes the stage on October 6 in a sketch-comedy musical written by kids for kids and starring comedians featured on the Story Pirates podcast. National Black Arts Festival Celebrates 30 Years of Arts and Educational Excellence

BAF celebrates its 30th Anniversary at the elegant Flourish Atlanta. For three decades, NBAF has presented advanced and celebrated the contributions and achievements of our emerging and established artists and spotlighted excellence in all disciplines of the arts. From dance to music and theater, we have looked at the many ways creatives of the Diaspora have explored our history, identify and vision. For the 30th Anniversary, NBAF is celebrating the Visual Arts.
NBAF began the year by honoring visual artist and scholar, Fahamu Pecou, whose works combine observations on hip-hop, fine art and popular culture. NBAF also presented the Luminary Award at the 30th Anniversary Gala to Radcliffe Bailey, painter, sculptor and mixed media artist who utilizes the layering of imagery, materials and text to explore themes of ancestry, race and memory. Both Fahamu and Radcliffe credit NBAF as contributing to their journeys from emerging to established artists. NBAF’s Season public events held this September will include two extraordinary gallery exhibits, “NBAF@30” Exhibit will highlight photos, videos and art pieces that will take guests on a journey of NBAF’s 30-year history. NBAF’s Fine Art Exhibition, “Without Stopping” curated by Jonell Logan, showcases some of the country’s most amazing visual artists. You will not want to miss these exhibits!

he global sensation Africa Umoja is coming to DeKalb County Oct. 30 – Nov. 8, 2018 as part of its worldwide Africa Umoja Male Ensemble tour celebrating the 100th birthday year of the late South African President Nelson Mandela (www.africaumojausatour.com). The high-energy musical tells the story of South Africa through song, storytelling, dance and drama, performed by a youthful, all-South African cast. The production is particularly appropriate for students, and a number of daytime performances have been planned to accommodate school field trips. We are asking the local business community to step forward to help underwrite the cost of these field trips”. The show, which has played to sold-out audiences in over 50 countries, is an exuberant journey through South African history, using the traditions of storytelling, drum talk, dance and song. Cast members will offer workshops and master dance classes at local schools and dance studios while they are in Atlanta. Africa Umoja is presented by the nonprofit organization International Arts Foundation (IAF, www.internationalartsfoundation. com) and International Arts Solutions, and sponsored by South African Airlines. IAF was founded 30 years ago in New Orleans to promote the benefits of cultural diversity through community projects and economic development. International Arts Foundation has expanded its focus to include art, education and international exchange, using music, dance, song and folklore to enrich communities.

Something Old, Something Bold, Stories Well Told: Aris Remembers the Great War
S
ince their inception in 2013, Arís, (pronounced ah-Reesh), Atlanta’s stage for celtic culture, has become known for their daring forays into contemporary Irish, Scottish, and Welsh theatre. They are bringing some of the most exciting new plays from the British Isles to Atlanta; past productions include The New Electric Ballroom by Enda Walsh and The Artist Man and the Mother Woman by Morna Pearson. They have earned a reputation for their deft handling beloved gems like Philadelphia, Here I Come! by Brian Friel, and The Playboy of the Western World by J.M. Synge. And they know how to throw a good party! Their annual Burns Night celebration is a rollicking evening of music and poetry that is not to be missed! Coming this fall, Arís is proud to participate in the worldwide commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day — the day that marked the end of World War I — with a number of special events. This special commemoration centers around the mainstage production of Not About Heroes by Stephen MacDonald, opening November 2nd and running through November 18th at 7 Stages Theatre Back Stage in Little Five Points. This moving play is based on the real-life
friendship between noted World War I poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen. Against the backdrop of the horrors of trench warfare, these two men forge a powerful bond which not only impacts them for the rest of their lives, but proves to be the catalyst for some of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching poetry to come out of the Great War. During the run of Not About Heroes, the hilarious WWI comedy Home and Beauty by M. Somerset Maugham, will be presented as a staged reading. There will be a special evening that celebrates the wonderful music and poetry of the era at Manuel’s Tavern. And on Sunday November 11th, Arís will host a special Armistice Day service at Cannon Chapel at Emory University, followed by a potluck lunch. More information and tickets at www.aristheatre.org.

Renovations Begin in Ferst Theatre The Ferst Theatre at Georgia Tech’s Ferst Center for the Arts will close this fall for a renovation that features the installation of new seats, lighting, carpet, and upgrades for accessibility. Madison Cario, Director of the Office of the Arts which manages the Ferst Center, said this is the first major renovation of the inside of the theatre since the late 1990s. When completed, the theatre will have all new seats, two center section aisles instead of the existing single aisle in the orchestra section, more space for accessible seating, a wheelchair lift, and wireless service upgrades. Following the renovation, the Arts@Tech Season begins in January with an intriguing and innovative line-up of performances at the intersection of art and technology.
