Although Jon Ludwig came to Atlanta’s Center for Puppetry Arts in 1978, the Artistic Director’s enthusiasm has never waned. Speaking about this Fall and Holiday Season offerings, Ludwig is definitely animated. “See a show! See the museum! Make a puppet! That is what is unique about the Center — it’s a multi-dimensional experience. What seems to WOW our patrons is the vast scope of puppetry,” he says. A visit to the Center offers a host of puppet shows created for specific age groups and for the entire family. There is also the renowned World of Puppetry Mu seum to explore, and hands-on experiences where visitors can make their own puppet. This Fall’s on-stage line-up includes “The Tortoise, the Hare and Other Aesop’s Fables” in the Theatre for the Very Young through September 18th. To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, “La Cucarachita Martina” is a Latin rock and roll musical about a “sweet little roach” on stage September 22-October 2. Ludwig explains, “It might seem unlike ly that a roach could be charming, but she is. Martina’s look is as sweet as her character.” “Animal Amigos,” October 6-16, presents Mexican folk tales with hilarious characters. “The Ghastly Dreadfuls” is a local “cult classic” offered October 12-29 for Halloween.“Wefound that adults wanted to party around Halloween, so we made a show featuring ghost stories and songs just for them,” says Ludwig. “It is best to leave the kids at home while the adults play!”

the Red Nosed Reindeer” is another fan-favorite that families can enjoy from November 9 through December 31. “The entire Center will be decked out in our holiday finest to create a festive place to enjoy for the season,” Ludwig explains. “We always have a ‘Build Your Own Puppet’ experience,” Ludwig continues. “In the Create A Puppet Workshop™, guests make a puppet based on a character from a current show. Then they learn to bring it to life. This program is a big hit with kids and adults.”After the Holidays, the new year brings a fresh calendar of family fun at the ever-exciting Center for Puppetry Arts. For information, visit www.puppet.org

“How to Snag a Sea Monster,” a show for all ages, runs from October 20-23. Ludwig says, “If you like to laugh, this show is for“Rudolphyou.”

M aking an Impression: The Art and Craft of Ancient Engraved Gemstones is the first exhibition of ancient gems in the southeastern United States and will open on August 27, 2022. Organized by the museum’s curator of Greek and Roman art, Dr. Ruth Allen, Making an Impression draws from the museum’s collection of Greek and Roman gems, many of which have never been displayed publicly. The museum’s gemstones are supplemented and contextualized by key loans that explore the material, iconography, and function of engraved gemstones in classical antiquity. Carved from semi-precious stones with miniature images of various subjects including gods, emperors, animals, and characters from myth, engraved gems in the Greek and Roman worlds were used as signets, amulets, and personal ornaments, typically mounted in rings. During the exhibition, the Carlos Museum will offer a wide variety of related programming. Join Atlanta Master Chorale for our 2022-2023 Concert Season!

.  And, in a show-stopping season finale on April 28 and 29, the award winning Chuck Nation Band will join us to perform High Lonesome Bluegrass Mass on a program featuring folk songs and hymns arising from the bluegrass tradition.  In its almost 40-year history, the Atlanta Master Chorale has come to define excellence in choral performance. This season showcases the group’s virtuosity, equally at ease handling pieces classical and contemporary, known and less known, German classics and Appalachian folk songs.

Tickets are available now, and our Atlanta ShowGuide patrons receive a $5 discount on individual adult concert tickets by using the code AMCShowguide at checkout. For ticketing and more information, www.atlantamasterchorale.org/concertsvisit.

When Atlanta Master Chorale re takes the stage on October 14 and 15 at the Schwartz Center for Per forming Arts, the evening’s theme will re flect where many of us find ourselves these days: In the Middle. Artistic Director Eric Nelson once again skillfully brings together thematic repertoire from a varied group of composers ranging from the 16th century to the contemporary. One of the highlights will be Fern Hill, a work for choir and chamber orchestra by John Corigliano based on Dylan Thomas’ poem. You will want to be there as we lead the audience to contemplate the experience of living in the moment. Our three additional programs of the 2022-2023 season promise amazingly diverse experiences. Christmas with the Atlanta Master Chorale is an annual tradition for many and a great way to celebrate the season of peace and light with friends or visiting relatives. Be sure to get tickets early because the three performances on December 9, 10 and 11 sell out quickly!  Our March 10 and 11 program will feature various settings of Magnifcat, the powerful text attributed to Mary, mother of Jesus, and interestingly, the longest set of words by a woman in the New Testament. Those words have been rendered in marvelously distinct pieces, and we will perform versions by six different composers from the Renaissance to the present, culminating with the celebrated Bach Magnificat

Balanchine Inspired runs for one weekend only, September 16 to the 18th at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center. The evening features one of Balanchine’s most beloved works, Serenade. At Pace Academy, the Process is the Product Fred

W hen Pace Academy Director of Fine Arts Sean Bryan and performing arts teacher Donna Pottorff decided to reimagine the school’s third-grade play, they brought in the professionals: Pace’s third-grade students.  Over a six-week period, students enjoyed lessons in literature, theater, music, collaboration and ingenuity while creating Charlotte’s Web Redux, a dramatic interpretation of E. B. White’s classic barnyard tale. Bryan and Pottorff provided the premise: as Pace third graders prepare for a quiz on Charlotte’s Web, they spend their recess period reenacting the story for each other. From there, the students filled in the“Everyonerest. split up into groups,” explains student Olivia Kaufman. Each group was assigned a portion of the book, and students improvised to bring the scene to life, incorporating real-life characters like their teachers. “Mr. Bryan and Mrs. Pottorff wrote down what we were saying as we acted things out,” Kaufman continues. “The story was sort of hidden, and then they helped us [refine our] lines, and that became our script.” The creative process gave students ownership of the production. “Instead of just reading a script and memorizing it, we had to try harder and really pay attention,” says student Kinsey Crumley. “We realized that putting together a play is a long process — it’s harder than you think! And you can’t complain about anything when you’re the one in charge of writing it.” That, says Bryan, was the point. “We really wanted students to get creative and to have fun. We wanted to show them that there should be joy in the journey.”
