Just in Time for the Holidays:

Theatrical Outfit’s Family Musical Big Fish

2016

has been a landmark year for Theatrical Outfit. Not only is it the theatre’s 40th anniversary, but the 2016 “Season of Hope” marks one of the biggest and most spectacular seasons yet. Theatrical Outfit has cultivated 6 shows that pull from a variety of subject matters and formats. The second oldest continually operating theatre company in Atlanta has already opened big: Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights (a co-production with Aurora Theatre) sold out the 833-seat Rialto Theatre and received rave reviews (A from the AJC), and Thurgood has also been praised for its timeliness and engagement with the community. Theatrical Outfit’s next production is a fantastical production, meant to inspire hope and offer Atlanta a unique family experience during the holiday season. Inspired by the novel and hit Tim Burton film, Big Fish spotlights Edward Bloom, a

traveling salesman whose biggest hope is to live life to its fullest. Edward’s tall-tales thrill everyone in earshot except his questioning son Will, about to be a father himself, who demands to know the truth behind Dad’s epic stories of giants, fortune-telling witches and mermaids. Full of heart, humor and inventive stagecraft, Big Fish offers an experience only theatre can — one that’s richer, funnier and bigger than life itself. Join Theatrical Outfit from December 1st through December 18th for a dazzling family musical directed by Theatrical Outfit’s Artistic Director Tom Key, with musical director by S. Renee Clark and choreography by Ricardo Aponte. Familiar Theatrical Outfit including Travis Smith (star of 2014’s smash hit Memphis) and Julissa Sabino (of In the Heights) take the stage for this refreshing and inspiring family musical. For tickets and information go to TheatricalOutfit.org or call (678)-528-1500. Actor Geoffrey D. Williams, 2016/17 Theatrical Outfit production Thurgood Photo by Chris Bartelski

CREATIVE PROCESS:

Marietta’s New Theatre In The Square Leadership Wants To Give Audiences “Something To Talk About” By Holley Calmes

E

mil Thomas is a 22-year-old Artistic Director taking the helm of a venerable Atlanta theatrical institution reboot. He hopes to recreate the innovative spirit and respect for classics that the first Theatre in the Square gave regional audiences. Thus opening with “Hamlet” this September was a good beginning, but young Thomas’ view of the future bodes well for “outside the box” experiences. “In the past, the Theatre was producing new and challenging works that pushed the community to see new narratives,” Thomas explains. “I have no intention of delivering anything different. There are plenty of theatres producing popular, commercial work. We all want to see that theatre, but we also need to see new theatre. It’s just like TV. We will all watch another episode of Law and Order, but we are even more excited when a new Series starts. Theatre should be the same way.” “I fell in love with theatre because I love storytelling,” he continues. “The beauty of theatre is finding the voice of others and allowing their story to be a narrative. There are classic stories that can be retold with new narratives and there are stories that haven’t been written or produced yet and need to be. Also, it is important to Artistic Director Emil Thomas

me that theatre is inclusive of everyone in the community.” Thomas is a product of Pebblebrook High School’s Performing Arts Magnet Program and a recent graduate of Ball State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre. His acquaintance with the first version of Theatre in the Square occurred during high school. Pebblebrook’s theatre students performed at the nearby Strand Theatre. “It wasn’t uncommon for us to walk to Theatre in the Square, grab food, and see what the ‘other’ theatre in the community was doing.” Not many years later, Thomas is directing that “other theatre.” He wants to bring in new works. “There are so many new plays out there that I want to read,” he states. “If they’re ready to be staged, I want to stage them. Marietta’s New Theatre in the Square Stage is such a space to create innovative work.” He cites August Wilson, Suzi Lori-Parks, Sam Shepard, Shakespeare, The Group Theatre and Tarell Alvin McCraney as favorite writers. “When patrons leave my theatre, I want them to be ready to have a conversation,” Thomas says. “I want them to talk about the piece of work they just saw. I want them to discuss the ideas and views that were shared in the piece. I want them to be able to say they ‘understand someone more now because I was this play at Marietta’s New Theatre in the Square.’”

DANCE FASHIONS

Putting the Final Touches on a Perfect Performance By Tolbert Yilmaz

A

s the 2016 holiday season approaches, the Atlanta dance scene is bustling in anticipation of one of its biggest seasonal traditions: The Nutcracker. The city of Atlanta is home to many companies and schools full of dancers working hard to meet the demands of bringing this ballet classic to the stage; and local retailer Dance Fashions Superstore, one of the country’s largest dance retailers, has been partnering the last thirtyeight years with Atlanta dance companies to enhance the Nutcracker experience. Party Children, Snowflakes, Cavaliers, Sugar Plum Fairies — and even Mice — can benefit from the store’s broad selection of shoes as well as professional fittings with employees of various dance backgrounds. Other performance essentials at this one stop shop include flesh-toned leotards designed to be worn under costumes, tights, hair accessories, false eyelashes, and sew kits for last-minute backstage fixes. Such a wide array of dance apparel and accessories serves to help Nutcracker participants of all ages be prepared for their time on stage. www. dancefashions.com

Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra Celebrates 10th Anniversary Season!

W

hen Maestro J. Wayne Baughman picked up his baton ten years ago to conduct what was then the very first Christmas Gala & Holiday Pops concert in December of 2006, he could only imagine what it might be like to lead a professional symphony orchestra season after season. But after that first exceptional and very successful performance, he knew anything was possible. And so it was that in April 2007, the Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra was born, and the rest as they say, is history. Now entering their Tenth Season, the JCSO has achieved some remarkable milestones, and performed for thousands of delighted patrons all across the greater North Fulton and Johns Creek region. Though part-time in nature, the JCSO has managed to bring three new and inspired concerts each of these last nine seasons. In addition, there have been outdoor concerts in the park, Virtuoso Strings performances, a chamber music series, and Handel’s Messiah. And along the way they have featured some remarkable guest soloists, developed some outstanding educational

programs presented to area elementary schools, such as Meet the Orchestra, performed a side-byside concert with the Georgia Piedmont Youth Orchestra, and brought outreach programs to area senior citizens. Looking back, Maestro expresses his thanks and gratitude to those who have made this all possible, and is excited about what is to come. “I hope many of you and your fellow music lovers will join us for this landmark season,” Maestro remarked. Landmark is truly what Season Ten promises to be. The JCSO will present its 11th Annual Holiday Pops Concert on December 17, 2016, and then the official 10th Anniversary Concert will be performed on March 4, 2017 with A Night at the Opera, featuring choruses, solos, duets, divas, and drama, of course. The season finale on May 13, 2017 brings the Sounds of the Big Bands to the forefront with not one but two big bands and an incredible finale that is sure to blow the roof off! The JCSO invites you to join them as they perform these three new and exciting concerts and launch their next decade of inspired symphonic performances.
