Natalie DeLancey Engages a “Big and Bold” Business Model at City Springs Theatre by Holley Calmes Natalie DeLancey

“W

e started out ‘big and bold’ at City Springs Theatre in 2018,” says Natalie DeLancey, Executive Director of the young non-profit theatre. “Even during the pandemic, we kept finding ways to keep going.” Performing in City Springs’ 1,000 seat Byers Theatre, the non-profit company continues its 4th season with three shows: “A Chorus Line” March 11-27; “The Color Purple” May 6-22; and “West Side Story” July 8-24. City Springs Theatre has been a “hit” from the beginning, and DeLancey believes there are at least three major reasons for this success. “First, our organization creates large, significant productions utilizing the combined efforts of talent from Atlanta and New York City.” This combination of teams has created what DeLancey calls “a hybrid approach.” The qualities and standards of NYC theatre are offered to Atlanta artists who benefit from these learning experiences and new connections. “It’s all about networking,” explains DeLancey. Another major reason for success is a commitment to arts education. A preprofessional company of 52 students from all over the Metro Atlanta area currently study their craft at City Springs Theatre’s Conservatory. “This educational component is one of my biggest interests,” says DeLancey. She is a

6

past Director of Arts Education and Outreach for the ArtsBridge Foundation where she produced the annual Shuler Awards for young theatre artists. “The pandemic allowed us to focus on our Conservatory kids,” she says. “We are training the next generation of theatre artists. All our instructors have professional accreditation. Investment and connection with the individual student resonate within our faculty.” The third component of success is all about community. “City Springs Theatre is a separate 501(c)3 non-profit, not a part of the City of Sandy Springs. However, our theatre complex has identified a ‘Downtown area’ for Sandy Springs, creating more of a sense of community,” DeLancey says. “All of our events have become an integral part of our patrons’ social calendars!” Another facet of the theatre’s community involvement is the “Leading Ladies Program.” “These women are our ambassadors in the community,” DeLancey explains. “They enjoy backstage experiences and volunteering. They create a ‘small town feel in this big city.’ They feel that it is their theatre.” “When you start with an organization from the ground up, you have a personal attachment that you just can’t describe,” says DeLancey. “I believe in the work.” Visit City Springs Theatre online at cityspringstheatre.com.

Ballethnic’s Urban Nutcracker Experience

Photos by Sirk Photography

U

rban Nutcracker is Waverly T. Lucas’ adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s ballet. Set in Atlanta’s historic Sweet Auburn community of the ‘40’s — the production offers a soulful celebration with whimsical characters such as Reggae Ragdolls, the sultry Arabian dance, the spins and leaps of the Black Russians, Mother Spice and her tumbling Spice Drops, the bubbly Coca-Cola Pas de Six, and the elegant Brown Sugar and her Chocolatier. While the contemporary ballet remains true to its classical tradition, Mr. Lucas’ choreography showcases Ballethnic’s signature style — blending classical ballet with jazz, modern, African, and other ethnic dance. This unique and engaging style creates a fast- paced and upbeat performance which captivates audiences of all ages and cultures. The production is set to the traditional Tchaikovsky score along with adapted music by L. Gerard Reid. Ballethnic’s Urban Nutcracker Experience features a multicultural cast of aspiring and professional artists, including veteran company members Karla Tyson and Calvin Gentry. They are joined by students from the Ballethnic Youth Ensemble and

senior citizens from the H.J.C. Bowden Multi-Purpose Center in East Point. The production will return to the Legacy Theater where audience members will experience a beautiful space that allows the colorful production to pop off of the LED screen onto the stage. Ballethnic is able to provide a COVID friendly live performance that incorporates the magic of the big screen. Big Mama, played by Sheila Spivey, brings the story to life. Urban Nutcracker is generously supported by the Fulton County Arts Council, and the Chestnut Family Foundation. https://ballethnic.org/

T

he Michael C. Carlos Museum is currently hosting three temporary exhibitions, Each/ Other: Marie Watt and Cannupa Hanska Luger, Resonance: Recent Acquisitions in Photography, and Confronting Slavery in the Classical World, all on view now through December. Visit the Carlos Museum and explore these exhibitions and rediscover the Southeast’s most comprehensive collections of art and archeology from ancient Egypt, Nubia, and the Near East; Greece and Rome; the Americas; Africa; and Asia as well as a collection of works on paper from the Renaissance to the present.
Explore the critically acclaimed Each/ Other: Marie Watt and Cannupa Hanska Luger. This is the first exhibition to feature two leading Indigenous contemporary artists whose processes focus on collaborative artmaking. Over two dozen mixed-media sculptures, wall hangings, and large-scale installation works by Marie Watt and Cannupa Hanska Luger are now on view at the Carlos Museum through December 12, 2021. Resonance: Recent Acquisitions in Photography, explores the act of interpretation through the seemingly opposing themes of isolation

and togetherness, loss and shared joy, and fear and courage, among others. The photographs seen here, all from recent gifts to the collection, are intended to resonate in some way with the unprecedented realities and profound emotions experienced by many during 2020. They are on view through December 5, 2021. This intervention, Confronting Slavery in the Classical World, addresses the reality of slavery in the ancient Greek and Roman world with selected objects in the Carlos Museum’s galleries. New labels highlight objects that either depict enslaved people or help elucidate the realities of slavery in classical antiquity. These labels, written with Emory undergraduates, are now accessible in the galleries and online. They prompt viewers to consider the untold and unseen histories that can lie behind conventional (art) historical narratives. Visit for November 5, 12, or 19 and receive free admission to the museum in recognition of Native American Heritage Month. Free public tours are offered every Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. For more details, to plan your visit, or for a full list of upcoming programs, visit carlos.emory.edu.

Alabama Shakespeare Festival makes a Big Return for Golden Anniversary Season

The Little Mermaid, Photo Courtesy of Alabama Shakespeare Festival

A

labama Shakespeare Festival’s 50th season continues its mission of building community with captivating stories that speak to and represent all people in the South. Featuring eight productions, including four musicals and a world premiere, ASF’s golden anniversary season explores stories of contemporary culture, heroic activists, everyday people in extraordinary times, and lots of music. Beginning with the holidays, ASF returns to its Festival and Octagon stages with Rogers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella and Greta Lambert’s one-woman adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. In the new year, Shakespeare’s most famous power couple comes to life in ASF’s bold and muscular production of Macbeth, followed by yet more blind ambition with the mega-hit musical Little Shop Of Horrors. The season continues with compelling stories based on actual events: Until the Flood and Freedom Rider (a world premiere). ASF wraps up its season with two summer musicals: The Marvelous Wonderettes and American Mariachi. “I knew the 50th anniversary would be a year marked with celebration, but I didn’t

realize it may very well be our most defining,” said ASF Artistic Director Rick Dildine. “What we do best is what people need most right now: we need to be together. This season spans real life to fairy tale. It celebrates families and heritage. It spans from Medieval Scotland to modern day Ferguson, MO. World premieres and some classics that never get old. There’s serious art and some pure campy moments.” Audiences can expect the lush and lavish in Season 50. ASF is the state’s only professional producing theater, and artisans and craftspeople returning to stage work have vigorously turned their industry and labor toward realizing the visions of this season’s directors and designers. This season of delightful and meaningful theatrical experiences also highlights ASF’s goal of making live theatre more accessible to more people. The addition of a new, lower-price seating option and a payment plan for subscriptions puts stories for all within reach for a variety of budgets, truly making ASF a place for everyone. Single tickets and subscriptions are on sale now at ASF.net or by calling the ASF Box Office at 334-271-5353.

Atlanta Master Chorale “It ’s the most wonderful time of the year”

T

he opening line of this holiday song evokes the memories, feelings and sentiments associated with childhood and family, gift giving and receiving, of joy and comfort, the time of social and religious celebration. Christmas music has become, whether on purpose or by accident, synonymous with the tradition of celebrating holidays and occasions of significance. It’s the holiday season and in most every culture, music resounds with all the joys and hopes of familiar songs and new ones, and surrounds our lives through streaming and radio to television specials and concerts, and perhaps, even some caroling in the neighborhoods.

with hopes for the future. Each year, Christmas with Atlanta Master Chorale celebrates with songs and carols of the season and allows us to pause in the midst of the hustle and bustle to experience the wonder and beauty of this festive time of year. “Yes, we need a little Christmas right this very moment.” For many, Christmas with the Atlanta Master Chorale has become a treasured part of their holiday tradition, and brings family, friends, neighbors, and out of town visitors together to share this special time. While we could not be together last year, our concert’s popularity will continue with three concerts at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. Join us at 8 p.m. on the evenings of Friday, December 10th and Saturday, December 11th, and Sunday afternoon, December 12th at 4 p.m., and experience again the birth of a promise of new life, peace, and joy. The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus is thrilled to announce our 40th annual Holiday Concert!

Y

ou have three opportunities to catch this fabulous program; December 3rd at 8 p.m., and December 4 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Our annual holiday show at The Cathedral of St. Philip is always a must-see event, and this tradition is how thousands of Atlantans have kicked off their holiday season for four decades. This year is extra special as the chorus performs some all-time favorites from the singers and audience alike. These favorites include Eric Whitacre’s beautiful “Lux Aurumque,” the Nigerian Carol “Betelehemu,” and Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria,” which is arguably the most beautiful piece ever written for men’s chorus. In celebration of our 40th anniversary we’re also premiering two new arrangements: a

Hanukkah song, “Hanerot Halalu” arranged by artistic director, Donald Milton III, and a joyful and hilarious song, “Holiday Lament,” arranged by Jay Wynn. The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus puts on the most fun holiday show in town and we can’t wait to see you there! The Voices of Note holiday season continues with the Atlanta Women’s Chorus show, Remembrance and Joy. On December 18th at 2 pm.. and 6 p.m., join the AWC at Morningside Presbyterian Church for some beautiful music. Remembrance and Joy is dedicated to those who lost their lives during 2020 through COVID or social injustices. We will be singing a new arrangement written for Sopranos and Altos of the Gabriel Fauré “Requiem” for the first half of the show and holiday tunes for the second half of the show. The holiday songs are also reflective but joyful such as Dan Forrest’s “Silent Night” and his new piece, “The Work of Christmas.” We are excited to sing the Fauré with organ and have the opportunity to acknowledge the difficulties of the past two years and express hope for the future. We hope you’ll join us. www.voicesofnote.org
