Celebrate the Beauty of Dance with Atlanta Ballet’s Midwinter Dreams
Let Atlanta Ballet take you into a world of dreams with immersive, live experiences that celebrate the joy and beauty of dance with Midwinter Dreams with the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra, February 10 – 12 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
In Midwinter Dreams, Atlanta Ballet will bring to the stage four works that will awaken your soul to the full range of human emotion, from joy and passion to sorrow and heartbreak.
The program opens with Concerto Grosso choreographed by San Francisco Ballet’s Helgi Tomasson as a showcase for five male dancers, demonstrating the different possible trajectories of men’s ballet careers and emphasizing each dancer’s unique qualities.
Next on the program is Ricardo Amarante’s Love Fear Loss. Inspired by the poignant personal life of French singer Edith Piaf, Amarante choreographed this exploration of romantic love to four of her most famous songs. Love Fear Loss takes you on a journey through three distinct phases of a passionate relationship, from
the high of new love, to the fear of waning intimacy, and finally, the tragically inevitable loss of love. Although it ends in heartbreak, Love Fear Loss is ultimately a celebration of the beauty we find even in the darkest moments of our lives.
The Atlanta Ballet premiere of acclaimed choreographer Cathy Marston’s Snowblind is the centerpiece of the evening. Based on Edith Wharton’s 1911 novella, “Ethan Frome,” the critically acclaimed Snowblind tells the story of Ethan, an unhappily married man, who falls in love with his beautiful young housemaid, Mattie. Desperately in love but trapped by poverty and their duty to a sickly wife, Ethan and Mattie decide to commit suicide during a blinding snowstorm.
The program concludes with the return of audience favorite, Classical Symphony, choreographed by Yuri Possokhov. This exuberant celebration of ballet will astonish and delight with unexpected movements and dizzying tricks that challenge the dancers to their limits. For more information visit atlantaballet.com.

Alabama Shakespeare Festival: Stories for All. A Place for Everyone.
Agood story sets our hearts and minds, even our bodies, in motion. Every culture around the world tells stories to build and strengthen its com munities: love stories, stories of courage, of shared history and heritage, of inspiration, cautionary tales. Stories give us access to personal and collective discovery. They let us see and share our distinctive experi ences so we might grow and strengthen our community through understanding and inclusion in the shared experience that is theatre. At Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF), you’ll find stories for all.
Stories are best told in a place that welcomes everyone. Alabama Shakespeare Festival is a place for people from all walks of life and in every stage of living and learning. People grow together and as individuals over the stories they see on our stages. Every person who sees our stories, their stories, come to life on our stages, is transformed in some way. And they, in turn, transform the world around them. We are a place for stories of togetherness. ASF is a place for everyone.
This season’s stories feature something for everyone and lots for everyone to share with the people important in their lives. Enjoy It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, a family-friendly holiday show that combines nostalgia for the classic film with the charm of 1940s radio. January brings Jubilee, an a cappella celebration of the history of the Fisk University Singers, with a gospel and spiritual song list including “Steal Away Home,” “Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel,” and “Wade in the
Water.” Shakespeare’s The Tempest opens in February with Greta Lambert taking an unusual turn as Prospero. Based on real events, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins unite for a once-in-a-lifetime jam session in Million Dollar Quartet in April. May brings the Tony-nominated Clyde’s, Lynn Nottage’s dark comedy about sin and redemption (through killer sandwiches, no less). We close the season with the classic Kander and Ebb musical Cabaret, transforming ASF into prewar underground Berlin and the infamous KitKat Club. Tickets and information at ASF.net

Experience the Spirit of Hope and Love at The Historic Holly Theatre
With a fresh take on Sondheim’s Into the Woods, The Holly Theatre in Dahlonega opened its first full season in three years. Seen through a child’s eyes, the cautionary, magical combination of familiar fairy tales showcased the regional talent and highlighted the spirit of the 2022-2023 Main-Stage Season — hope and love.
The theme Hope Endures and Love Conquers All continues with the upcoming shows: musical She Loves Me with its hilarious and touching Christmas finale in December; Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing just in time for Valentine’s Day; the musical The Spitfire Grill in the spring; and the beloved Matilda concludes the season.
According to the Artistic Director Stephanie Garrett, “Our first season back together again, we felt it was important to share a message of hope. And hand in hand with hope, love is a ubiquitous thespian theme!” (For show and ticket information go to hollytheater.com or call 706-5305162.)
The patrons have been the Holly’s inspiration, remarks The Holly Board Chair, Ivana Pelnar-Zaiko. Their steady support allowed the Theatre to face the uncertainty
of the past two years. “Now we are more than ready to give back to the community through the enchantment of live theater,” says Ms. Pelnar-Zaiko, “and it’s thrilling once again to be producing a full theatrical season. We are delighted to see our audiences come back.”
In addition to full-scale, main-stage productions, the children’s program, Holly Performance Academy, is in full swing. On the first November weekend, the youngsters will usher in the Holiday season with The Best Christmas Pageant Ever The delightful 101 Dalmatians will follow in March.
During the COVID-required “intermission,” the Holly Theatre used the time to renovate. They rebuilt the entire stage, added elegant new curtains, improved the lighting, added new backdrops, and upgraded its comfort and air quality systems.
The historic beauty and relaxed atmosphere of The Holly, however, remain unchanged. With no seat more than seventy feet from the stage, The Holly offers an intimate and inviting setting for guests to relax and escape through the magic of theater.

The NutcrackerShen Yun Brings 5,000 Years of Culture to Atlanta
Exquisite beauty from the heavens. Profound wisdom from dynasties past. Discover authentic Chinese culture, as Shen Yun Performing Arts, the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, comes to Atlanta Symphony Hall in December.
Shen Yun, a New York-based company, was founded in 2006 by an impressive group of Chinese artists. Their dream was to create a renaissance for mankind’s most ancient heritage. Today, their wish has become an international phenomenon.
Shen Yun performs in 150 cities worldwide. With breathtaking dances, gorgeous costumes, live orchestra, and dynamic backdrops, this is a show brimming with themes of courage, hope, and triumph of good over evil. Shen Yun is the world’s only company depicting Chinese culture as it had been before it was nearly destroyed by decades of communist rule.
Each year, the company debuts a new lineup of original music and choreography, ranging from classical Chinese dance to traditional ethnic and folk dance styles to theatrical depictions of beloved stories.
At the performance’s core is classi cal Chinese dance. This is the same richly expressive art form that had once been per formed in front of emperors in palace halls.
Today, it has evolved into one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.
Shen Yun features hundreds of handmade costumes — showcasing apparel from China’s 5,000 years of history. Their exquisite colors blend seamlessly with the animated backdrops, instantly transporting the audience to another world. The animation also contains a few surprises, but those are best left for the performance.
In this holiday season, Shen Yun’s warm embrace of this ancient heritage is a great way to celebrate holidays, and is a highly accessible, enlightening, and entertaining experience.
Shen Yun will perform at Atlanta
Symphony Hall Dec. 24, 2022 - Jan. 8, 2023. For tickets and more information, visit www.shenyun.com/Atlanta.

Growing Musicians and Global Leaders at Pace Academy
In the fall of 2022, Pace Academy published Excellence in Every Endeavor, a five-year strategic plan that emphasizes the school’s motto — To have the courage to strive for excellence — and imagines an ever-greater place for children to learn, grow and thrive. As part of Pace’s strategic efforts, the school will expand performing arts programming for all students, while continuing to develop foundational knowledge in the arts by bridging curriculum across the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools. Within Pace’s thriving strings program, that work is already underway. This year, students in third grade may elect to participate in strings, a program expansion that represents Pace’s investment in arts education for its youngest learners. The expansion was made possible by the 2021 opening of the Kam Memar Lower School, which added 36,500 square feet of state-of-the-art space, including nearly 3,000 square feet of classroom space dedicated to music education, in addition to
spaces for science, STEAM, Design Thinking and play. “It’s exciting to see the growth that the Kam Memar Lower School has already made possible within our arts program,” reports Pace Academy Director of Fine Arts Sean Bryan. “We know that children who commit to a specific musical discipline early in childhood build a unique set of skills that serves them throughout their lives. Dedication to an instrument enhances fine motor skills, and it develops the part of the brain used to focus and concentrate. But more than that, musical study allows students to learn through failure, trial and error, and — ultimately — success. This boosts confidence and self-esteem, as well as creativity and discipline, skills necessary in today’s global market.” The goal, Bryan says, is to use education in the arts to create lifelong learners and critical thinkers. “Academics develop the mind, athletics develop the body and the arts develop the soul.” Visit paceacademy.org/arts for information.
