e know the parable of “the little engine that could” is overused and banal, but there may be no more apt use for it than in describing North Atlanta’s City Springs Theatre Company. While there have been numerous struggles in the post-pandemic age, the six-yearold Sandy Springs-based company has managed to grow its subscriber base to a robust 4,500+, and recently expanded its operation to include a 9,000 square foot production facility in Marietta. “It’s all about having the right staff, and an engaged board of directors,” says CSTC’s Executive Director Natalie DeLancey. “We’re incredibly fortunate to have employees who are not only remarkably knowledgeable and talented, but they selflessly work together in a way that allows us to maximize output on all levels. And that’s a major reason for our growth and success, I think.” CSTC productions are grand efforts, with union stagehands and musicians, and a mix of local and national talent. “We’ve been a professional company since we started, “says Shuler Hensley, the Broadway veteran and company’s Artistic Director, “and producing shows that look like these, and sound like these, with this level of

talent onstage is not cheap. Everyone who works on our shows gets paid to do so, and the value we place on all our artists is reflected onstage.” DeLancey juggles many responsibilities as Executive Director, including managing the many donors and sponsorships that keep the non-profit company afloat. “Fundraising has always been key to the success of this company,” said Steve Hauser, one of those four founders. “Subscriptions and ticket sales only account for half our annual budget, so we’re enormously grateful to every individual and business that has taken an interest in what we do — and that they continue to value what we do.” Now in its sixth season, there’s much to look forward to. Broadway legend Baayork Lee is returning to direct/ choreograph Beauty and the Beast in March, and there’s the regional premiere of Jersey Boys next summer. DeLancey says, “Jersey Boys is another show that’ll probably bring in lots of first-timers. ou Belong Here: Place, People, and Purpose in Latinx Photography celebrates the dynamic photography of Latinx artists across the United States. The exhibition brings together established and emerging artists, who tackle themes of political resistance, family and community, fashion and culture, and the complexity of identity in American life. The artists in the exhibition contribute to a vast visual archive of the Latinx experience as pluralistic, nuanced, and fluid. They illustrate a range of histories and geographies, contextualize and reinterpret watershed social and artistic movements, stake space for queerness, and articulate the importance of photography within the larger field of Latinx art. You Belong Here explores contemporary photography that sheds light on social spaces — from intimate portrayals of home and family to collective experiences of the streets and nightlife — as well as the inbetweenness, or “nepantla,” of transnational, multiracial, and postcolonial identities.

Curated by Pilar Tompkins Rivas, chief curator and deputy director of curatorial and collections at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, You Belong Here, organized by Aperture, originates from Tompkins Rivas’s work as guest editor of “Latinx,” the Winter 2021 issue of Aperture magazine. The exhibition features work by Laura Aguilar, Genesis Báez, William Camargo, Sofía Córdova, Perla de Leon, Tarrah Krajnak, Hiram Maristany, Joiri Minaya, Steven Molina Contreras, Star Montana, Eddie Quiñones, Reynaldo Rivera, Guadalupe Rosales, Gabriela Ruiz and Bibs Moreno, and John M. Valadez. On Nov. 2, join ‘Moving Still: A Night of Dance’ in the galleries. The Emory Dance Company students, alongside Assistant Professor of Dance Julio Medina, will perform in the galleries, celebrating and reflecting on contemporary photography by U.S. Latinx artists. Performances will start at 7 and 8 p.m. Free admission and art-making for families will be offered Dec. 3.

(KNOCK, KNOCK) invites little ones to come in from the cold to celebrate community, family, and warmth this winter, and to interact with a variety of friends who call the apartment building home as they “knock” on doors, meet the neighbors, and use their imaginations to create winter magic. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Will Uplift Audiences at the Fox Theatre During Its 65th Anniversary Performances, January 25-27

he incomparable Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to the Fox Theatre Jan. 25-27, a perfect prelude to Black History Month. The Company will celebrate its 65th Anniversary with four breathtaking performances, bringing a radiant repertoire of exciting new works and time-honored favorites to Atlanta. A world premiere taking the stage is CENTURY by first-time Ailey choreographer Amy Hall Garner. Kennesaw State to Present “Once on This Island: The Musical”

Tony Award-winning musical bursts to life with Afro-Caribbean rhythms

ennesaw State’s Department of Theatre and Performance Studies (TPS) will present the Tony Awardwinning musical “Once on This Island: The Musical” in the Stillwell Theater Nov. 2-5 and Nov. 9-12. Written by Lynn Ahrens, with music by Stephen Flaherty, the musical is the universal tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl in search of her place in the world, and ready to risk it all for love. With the power to inspire and heal, the story is simply, beautifully told. Director and Guest Artist Kayce Denise appreciates the importance of the storytelling basis, as it “comes from the people. Sometimes, stories have been taken away from their culture, erased, or given a different perspective…each character can own their story, share that story, keep that story going,” she says. “We’re bringing stories to life — it’s the center of what we do in TPS,” says Amanda Wansa Morgan, associate professor of theatre and performance Studies. “The

musical starts with a literal storm, and examines what communities do to recover, and how people in those communities keep their stories alive,” adds Morgan. Theatre student Ebony Golden (Acting, 2025) is also trying to keep the stories alive in her role as dramaturg under Tom Fish, assistant professor of theatre and resident dramaturg. Her favorite song from the robust score is “Why We Tell the Story,” because “it’s a wonderful, beautiful song, and, at the end of the day, we should be telling our stories.” The musical score bursts to life with Afro-Caribbean rhythms and instruments. “We have a live band — a combination of Bailey School of Music students and professionals — and it’s been a lot of fun,” says Morgan. Angela Harris, executive artistic director of Dance Canvas, Inc., is bringing dance choreography to the stage because it’s “intrinsic to the story. Atlanta Ballet’s The Nutcracker will Add a Little Magic to Your Holidays

tlanta Ballet has a long history of making The Nutcracker part of Atlanta audiences’ holiday tradition that goes back 60 years. In 1958, Robert Barnett left George Balanchine’s storied New York City Ballet to become a principal dancer and associate director with Atlanta Civic Ballet, later renamed Atlanta Ballet, and in 1962 he was named artistic director. During his tenure, he helped Atlanta Ballet secure its professional status and gifted both the organization and local audiences with the magic of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker. Atlanta Ballet was the first regional company outside of New York City Ballet to perform this famed version of the holiday classic when Mr. Balanchine granted Mr. Barnett, his original Sugar Cane male soloist in the production, exclusive permission to restage the ballet in 1959. Enjoy the Diverse Repertoire of A Cappella by The New South Festival Singers

he New South Festival Singers, created in 1985 by founder William Baker, was known as The William Baker Festival Singers from 1998-2015. Its founder led the Festival Singers through its 30th season. The ensemble is now “The New South Festival Singers” in homage to Henry W. Grady’s description of Atlanta’s historical legacy of tolerance, justice, opportunity, and enterprise. The ensemble is now in its fifth season under the leadership of Music Director Lynn Swanson.   The Festival Singers specializes in short-form sacred a cappella classics and spirituals and annual performances of masterworks for chorus and orchestra. Major concerts have included a performance of Brahms Requiem with the Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra and a performance in Spivey Hall of Bach’s St. John Passion and Mass in B Minor. The Festival Singers performed the Bloch Avodath Hakodesh for the rededication of the pipe organ at The Temple on Peachtree, and, at the Community Christian Church in Kansas City, a performance broadcast in its entirety by Kansas Public Radio on the eve of Passover 2012. The Festival Singers’ recording of the John Rutter Requiem and Dreyfoos Songs of the

Holocaust was reviewed graciously in the American Record Guide. The ensemble is known for its expressive memorized performances of signature a cappella concerts demonstrating a striking diversity of repertoire. Pace Academy’s Light One Candle Shines the Spotlight on Holiday Traditions

s 2023 comes to a close and families throughout Atlanta celebrate the holiday season, Pace Academy Lower School students will take the stage to share the Hanukkah and Christmas stories with the school community. Light One Candle, Pace Academy’s annual holiday program, celebrates its 33rd year this winter. The beloved tradition began in 1991 when retired Head of Lower School Anna Valerius, then a first-grade teacher, was looking for a way to involve her students in the performing arts. She went to the Pace Academy administration with an idea for a production that would honor Pace’s Judeo-Christian values by celebrating the Hanukkah and Christmas traditions and including all Lower School students in age-appropriate ways. School leadership welcomed the addition to the calendar and gave the project the green light. In consultation with local ministers and rabbis, faculty members developed the script, which incorporated classic holiday songs such as Hanerot Halalu and We Three Kings of Orient Are, and Light One Candle was born. The production has remained relatively unchanged since

Students in Pre-First dress as angels and cherubs; first-graders depict the historical figures; second, third and fourth graders sing along; and fifth graders provide the narration. In the early 2000s, the simple set was redesigned, but it continues to incorporate as its focal point the Temple in Jerusalem which, when turned around, becomes the stable in Bethlehem, a symbol of unity. Prior to the performances, students learn about the holidays and share their family traditions with each other so they understand the stories behind the events portrayed on stage. In addition to Lower School students and families, Light One Candle has special meaning for Pace Academy seniors. At the conclusion of the production, members of the graduating class join the Lower School cast on stage, standing behind the character they played during their first-grade year at Pace Academy. “It is a full-circle moment, and there’s not a dry eye in the house,” says Head of School Fred Assaf. “For more than 30 years, Light One Candle has been our youngest students’ gift to our Pace community.”
