D
angerous Liaisons stoke the flames of the human heart when a parade of iconic characters descends upon The Atlanta Opera’s 40th Anniversary season. The 2019-20 season packs high drama and breathtaking vocalism behind the femme fatale Salome, the disabled beggar from Porgy and Bess, the selfish stepsisters in La Cenerentola, and the two-timing cad from Madama Butterfly. Addiction, romance, and men who misbehave — that’s our season onstage at The Atlanta Opera. La Cenerentola features Atlanta Opera favorite and former Studio Artist Santiago Ballerini as the dashing Ramiro. Salome — a brand-new production built just for The Opera — features UGA grad Jennifer Holloway in the title role. Porgy and Bess stars the powerful bass Morris Robinson. And Madama Butterfly brings home a production first done in 2015, with worldrenowned soprano Yasko Sato as Butterfly. “We’re staging classic works by Puccini, Rossini, and Strauss, but in new and different ways, as part of our commitment to classic opera, and we have chosen to stage the Gershwin’s largerthan-life operatic musical, Porgy and Bess,
as part of our commitment to bringing new & different audiences in to the world of The Atlanta Opera,” said Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. General & Artistic Director Tomer Zvulun. Now one of the hottest tickets in town, The Atlanta Opera Discoveries series celebrates its sixth season before sold-out crowds across the city. Bringing singers and a live theatre experience into unexpected places, we’re reimagining, redefining, and revitalizing the art of storytelling. This season we’re offering two riveting productions: Frida, based on the revolutionary Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and performed in the new Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center at City Springs, and Glory Denied, the heartrending saga of America’s longest-held prisoner of war. Committed to making opera more accessible, The Atlanta Opera has more affordable seating options than ever at all our performances, including up to 25% savings for subscribers off the new single-ticket prices. Go online at atlantaopera.org for important information about subscription opportunities, the opera-going experience, and your exclusive subscriber benefits, including the Discoveries series discounts.

The Strand Presents a Seven Show Blockbuster Theatrical Season in 2019
S
ince the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre reopened as a multi-discipline performing arts venue after undergoing a complete renovation in 2008, it has stood as the premiere arts destination in metro Atlanta. A cornerstone of the historic Marietta square, in the 10 years since reopening, The Strand has brought film festivals, national theatre, concerts, and comedy tours, world premieres, awardwinning in-house productions, and a celebrated theatre education program to Cobb County. In 2019, The Strand is curating a seven-show theatrical season, the first of its kind at the theatre. The season includes the return of the popular Murder! at The Strand franchise in April with Murder! at The Strand II: Dark Matters, an original production based on the hit interactive theatre experience Murder! at The Strand pioneered in 2018 by creative team Corey Bradberry and Jeremy Ledbetter. The only one of its kind, Murder! at The Strand allows theatre patrons to become part of the show itself as investigators in a production that’s part escape room and part theatrical performance that breaks down
the fourth wall and expands what the traditional theatre experience can be. Also premiering in 2019 is the national tour of the hit girls night out musical Little Black Dress, brought to stage by the creative forces behind Tony Nominated Mean Girls Broadway, SPANK! The Fifty Ed Asner Shades Parody!, Sirius XM’s Canada Laughs, and Evil Dead The Musical! Ed Asner will also be making a one weekend only appearance on The Strand stage in his internationally touring A Man and His Prostate, a one-man show from award winning Mary Tyler Moore Show writer Ed Weinberger. The seven-time Emmy award winner and icon of American television stars in the seriously funny show about the true story of a sudden and unexpected trip to a foreign emergency room, brought to life by Asner’s unparalleled comedic talent. Other shows in the season include the beloved gospel musical Smoke on the Mountain, fan-favorite musical revues Jukebox Giants: Motown & More and A Christmas Tradition, and the comedy-oferrors play Whose Wives Are They Anyway? Season tickets are on sale for a limited time only at strandmarietta.org.

Atlanta Women’s Chorus
Voices of Note — Music with a Message
U
nder the umbrella of Voices of Note, the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus (AGMC) and the Atlanta Women’s Chorus (AWC) are not your usual standand-sing choirs! Both choruses are always dishing up some wonderful entertainment. Music with a message is the hallmark of these engaging performing arts groups. The AGMC was founded in 1981 and has been singing ever since. Born in a time when it was risky to be “out” as gay, the men stepped forward to be their authentic selves. The AGMC has performed with the likes of Maya Angelou, Leslie Jordan, the Atlanta Symphony, and the Gay Men’s Chorus of Paris. Always a bit tongue-in-cheek and forever musically engaging, the concerts are both fun and heartfelt. In 2013 the AGMC founded the Atlanta Women’s Chorus, recognizing the Atlanta area needed this kind of artistic group and diversity. The AWC is in its sixth season and singing to sold out audiences. Performances are diverse including all genres of music, from foreign language to classical, and world music numbers to good old American Broadway. Both groups have upcoming summer concerts. On June 22 the AGMC presents
I See You: 50 Years After Stonewall. The Stonewall riots in 1969 started the gay rights movement. These concerts will be an homage to the Stonewall legacy, to the music of that decade and a celebration of how times have changed. The AWC presents LEGENDARY! on June 8. AWC pulls out all the stops to bring you the music of the most notable female artists of our times. Aretha, Barbra, Adele and more! The music is thrilling and the AWC will delight and entertain. Community outreach is an important component of the work of both choruses. In addition to the three-concert series each chorus performs per season, each group gives back to the community with multiple public performances. The AGMC and the AWC hold auditions for interested singers. Please check out the website for more information on the upcoming concerts and auditions. www.voicesofnote.org

oin us for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s season finale performances. Over the course of five days, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra presents the final performances of a two-year celebration of musical masters Ludwig van Beethoven and Leonard Bernstein. The (mostly) Beethoven Festival features four works by Beethoven, beginning on May 30, June 1 and June 2 with Principal Guest Conductor Donald Runnicles leading the Orchestra in Beethoven’s evocative Symphony No. 6, which Atlantans will recognize from Walt Disney’s 1940 film Fantasia. These performances feature Beethoven’s magnificent overture written for his only opera, Fidelio, and later set aside: the Leonore Overture No. 3. Also on the program, Bernstein’s musical response to the tragic death of an Israeli flutist and soldier, Halil, performed by ASO Principal Flutist Christina Smith. On June 6 and 8, Music Director Robert Spano closes out the season with a full presentation of Beethoven’s Fidelio, featuring the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and an all-star cast of vocal soloists, including soprano Christine Goerke, baritone Nmon Ford, bass Morris Robinson and more. The
opera follows the courageous Leonore as she spurns social mores to free her husband from the clutches of a ruthless tyrant. Swapping her corset for a pair of trousers, the subversive Leonore restyles herself as the young Fidelio to carry out the rescue mission. Both finale performances include a special pre-concert talk from Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Program Notes Annotator Ken Meltzer. Ken takes ticketholders inside the music for an in-depth look at the history and making of each program. Visit aso.org/mostlybeethoven for more information about the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s 2018/19 season finale. Music for the Very Young: Music of Africa The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Music for the Very Young series is designed for preschool-age children and their grownups. A Love Story as Old as Time It has been told and retold over and over, in movies (Pretty Woman) and books (La Dame aux Camélias) and musicals (Moulin Rouge), but no one tells the story quite like Verdi —with a sumptuous setting and sweeping music. Violetta, a young and beautiful courtesan, falls in love with the equally young and beautiful Alfredo. Love, however, can be deadly to a woman in her position. The Atlanta Opera mainstage season closes with this classic story of love and loss — a gorgeous interpretation of one of the most well-known and well-loved operas in the repertoire. www.atlantaopera.org
