Two Premieres at the Alliance Theatre
Close the 2023-2024 Season
Spring at the Alliance Theatre features two premieres. One, the Atlanta premiere of FAT HAM. The other, the world premiere musical, THE PREACHER’S WIFE.
Winner of the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in drama, FAT HAM follows the story of Juicy, a queer, Southern college kid, grappling with some serious questions of identity as the ghost of his father shows up at their backyard barbecue and demands Juicy avenge his murder. Playwright James Ijames has reinvented Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Hamlet, creating what The New York Times calls “a hilarious yet profound tragedy smothered in comedy.” FAT HAM, running April 3 through May 19, marks the return of Marshall Mabry, IV, to the Alliance’s Hertz Stage. alliancetheatre.org/fatham
The season will close on the Coca-Cola Stage with THE PREACHER’S WIFE. Inspired by the beloved blockbuster film, the stirring new musical is about the power of hope. In their fast-gentrifying Harlem neighborhood, Preacher Henry and his wife Julia struggle to keep their congregation going in the face of development. When all seems lost, Henry asks God for help, and receives it in the form of an angel. Through it all, Julia must find her voice and the strength to lead. The show features an original gospel-infused score by actor, comedian, and writer
Tituss Burgess (TV’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and a book by Burgess and actress, producer, and writer Azie Dungey (TV’s Harlem), and stars Loretta Divine and Amber Riley. THE PREACHER’S WIFE runs on the Coca-Cola Stage, May 11 through June 16. alliancetheatre.org/preacherswife

Atlanta Women’s Chorus Presents ‘Phoenix Rising’: A Musical Journey Through Atlanta’s History and Identity
The Atlanta Women’s Chorus is set to captivate audiences with their upcoming performance, “Phoenix Rising” scheduled for Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the Lawrenceville Arts Center, Home of Aurora Theatre.
This thought-provoking show promises a deep exploration of what it truly means to call Atlanta home. Through a series of poignant musical pieces and reflective narratives, the chorus will traverse the rich tapestry of Atlanta’s history and cultural heritage.
From the indigenous Native American tribes who first inhabited the land to the seismic events of the Civil War and the transformative Civil Rights Movement, Atlanta’s story is one of resilience and evolution. The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. looms large, a beacon of hope and justice that continues to inspire generations.
Yet, the chorus doesn’t shy away from addressing the challenges that Atlanta, like any city, faces. Discussions on issues such as gay rights highlight the ongoing struggle for equality and inclusion. The Atlanta Women’s Chorus seeks to foster a dialogue on these important topics and inspire
positive change through their performance. One of the hallmarks of Atlanta’s identity is its rich musical heritage, which the chorus celebrates with a diverse repertoire ranging from classical to popular to hip-hop. These musical influences reflect the city’s vibrant cultural landscape and its role as a melting pot of artistic expression.
While the show pays homage to Atlanta’s past achievements and cultural contributions, it also serves as a call to action. The chorus acknowledges that while there is pride in being Southerners and in Atlanta’s storied history, there is still work to be done. It’s a reminder that progress is not a destination but a continuous journey, and that by coming together as a community, we can create a brighter future for all.
Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the transformative power of music and storytelling with the Atlanta Women’s Chorus performance of “Phoenix Rising.” Join us as we celebrate Atlanta’s past, embrace its present, and envision a more inclusive and equitable tomorrow.

Here’s the Cutting Edge of American Opera
The mayor’s annoyed, the town is in an uproar. Forsyth County is flooded with mysteries. A private detective and a witch are put on the trail to discover what is causing the trouble in this dynamic new work. The Atlanta Opera, with Morehouse College, presents the world premiere of its first commission with the new opera from Marcus Norris and Adamma Ebo, Forsyth County is Flooding (with the Joy of Lake Lanier) to open the 3rd Annual 96Hour Opera Festival. Selected as winners of the 96-Hour Opera Project in 2022, Norris and Ebo were commissioned to write the one-act opera now presented as the first of many new works that will be launched from the annual competition. Directed by Tinashe Kajese-Bolden, the Jenning Hertz Artistic Director at the Alliance Theater, the new work is a dark comedy that captures the energy of improv traditions from the African diaspora coupled with structures and techniques of European classics.
“I was immediately attracted to this opera because of how accessible the art is!” says Kajese-Bolden. “The depth of heart, levity, and humor are all the more compelling because of Marcus’s capacity to encompass diverse influences in a creatively charged synthesis.”
The Festival also brings five new 10-minute operas to the stage for the 96Hour Opera Project — a competition that has been the centerpiece of the project since it
launched in 2022. The Project Showcase is the culmination of a new works competition that starts with the application and selection of five composer-librettist teams. The Atlanta Opera invites applications from creatives across the country who self-identify as under-recognized in the opera field. Ten people are selected and paired into teams to create new mini-operas and compete for the $10,000 Antinori Grand Prize and commission. Audience enthusiasm counts in the judging of the competition, so cheer on your favorites!
The 96-Hour Opera Festival opens with the world premiere of Forsyth County is Flooding (with the Joy of Lake Lanier) on Saturday, June 15 at 7 p.m. and the Project Showcase is on Monday, June 17 at 7 p.m. Performances are at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Centre at Morehouse College. Tickets are available at atlantaopera.org or by calling 404-881-8885.

Life on the Fringe Annual Festival Highlights
Artistic Risk-Takers from Across the Country
Fringe Festivals have always been a place where outsider art can shine, where anybody can take a big risk and try something strange and fun and new. To be sure, Diana Brown, Executive Director of the Atlanta Fringe Festival, has seen it all while producing a massive live performance festival for the last 12 years. “Whatever you can think of, we’ve had it. All kinds of puppets, dancers with live music, a LOT of naked people, performance artists dressed up as killer robots. People just go for it at a Fringe, because it’s relatively inexpensive to produce and our audience is always up for anything!”
2023 Artist (and Producer’s Choice Award winner) CB Goodman agrees. “The audience was so game. They were so ready to play. The call and response was so wonderful. I don’t know — it was so different from when I did (this show) in New York and in Austin. Here, they were like ‘Let’s go, let’s party, let’s have fun.” Her experience is typical for out of town artists who trek in from all over the country for the annual week-long performance festival. Year after year the artists venture
into traditional spaces and makeshift venues in and around Little Five Points and find audiences filled with Atlanta arts patrons who are supportive, curious, and ready to experience something new.
“I’ve always viewed festivals as a medium for experimental performance,” adds 2024 artist Benjamin Goldberg of BFG Images. “You can break the conventions of traditional storytelling because the audience has no expectations for what they’re about to see. The freedom to explore in these unconventional ways is why so many of us create art.” And, like most Fringe artists, Goldberg’s intention is rooted in community. “I really just wanted to direct/produce a show that I could include as many working artists as I know. Atlanta has such a strong sense of community and collaborative spirit; with artists who do an incredible job of uplifting each other and I wanted this to become a way to work with a number of the artists I have met over the years.”

Spend the Weekend with ASF’s Southern Writers Festival and the Premiere of Zelda in the Backyard
Alabama Shakespeare Festival celebrates its Southern Writers Festival in June with the festival’s return and the world premiere of Zelda in the Backyard.
Zelda in the Backyard is a one-woman play written by SWF favorite Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder that stars Nancy Bell, running June 13-30. When Libby inherits a wrecked 1961 Rolls Royce named after fellow Alabama native Zelda Fitzgerald, she sets off on a journey to reassemble the car and pieces of the past her father left behind. A little broken herself, Libby’s path leads her to a new understanding of love, marriage, and family. Rick Dildine directs Zelda in the Backyard, his final project as ASF’s artistic director.
Zelda in the Backyard was workshopped during the 2022 Southern Writers Festival, concluding with a staged reading of the play. Wilder’s Gee’s Bend and White Lightning were also developed during past festivals and later produced by ASF.
The 2024 Southern Writers Festival will be a day-long event on Saturday, June 15, scheduled around performances of Zelda in the Backyard. It will feature two theatrical readings, stimulating conversation, playwrights’ panel discussion, and delicious food. SWF explores Southern identity via works that reflect the shared histories and unique narratives of those who have called the South home. Visit ASF.net for complete details as they are announced.

City Springs Theatre Company Announces Seventh Season
City Springs Theatre Company is currently coming off its fastestselling production ever (Disney’s Beauty and the Beast), and after repeatedly breaking records during 2023, it is poised to continue entertaining enthusiastic North Atlanta theatergoers heading into its newly-announced 2024-2025 season.
“We are very excited to bring four legendary Broadway musicals to area audiences,” said City Springs Theatre Company’s Executive Director Natalie DeLancey. “We will again be casting local and Broadway talent for all our shows here in Sandy Springs, and we’re super excited that we will be designing and building all of this season’s sets at our new production facility in Marietta.”
The award-winning theatre company’s seventh season at the Byers Theatre will launch in September with Tony® and Olivier Award®-winning Artistic Director Shuler Hensley directing the Broadway classic Meredith Willson’s The Music Man, September 6th through 22nd. Hensley recently played Marcellus Washburn in the hit Broadway revival of the show (opposite Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster), and certainly knows his way around the material. Hensley has previously helmed the classics The Sound of
Music and Fiddler On The Roof for CSTC.
The season then continues in December, as the company mounts its second regional premiere of the year (this summer’s Jersey Boys will be the first), when it presents Disney’s Frozen: The Broadway Musical (December 13-29). That will be followed in 2025 by the much-beloved Flaherty-Ahrens musical, Ragtime (March 14 –30), and then the season will come to a close with the jukebox hit, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical (May 2–18).
Since subscription renewals started on March 11, the company says it has processed more orders, faster than ever before, and interest in new subscriptions (available May 6) is at an all-time high. DeLancey says, “You cannot underestimate the enthusiasm of family audiences, and if a title like Frozen helps generate subscriptions, that’s a win for us, and a win for our community.”
City Springs Theatre Company will round out its’ 2023-2024 season in May with Legally Blonde: The Musical (May 3-19) with Broadway’s Lily Kaufmann as “Elle Woods” and original Broadway cast member Nikki Snelson directing the show.

Opportunity, Impact, and a Place to Belong: The Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra
More than just an orchestra — The Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra (GYSO) is a community where young musicians connect with peers who share their love of making music. Students form lasting friendships and have the opportunity to broaden their horizons beyond their own communities.
Established in 2006 as part of the Georgia Symphony Orchestra, GYSO is among the largest youth orchestra programs in the Southeast, serving students from 17 metro counties in elementary through high school. Through five orchestras and seven instrumental chamber ensembles, including jazz and percussion, GYSO provides a place for everyone.
A Place to Belong: Cellist Antonia Patel is a member of GYSO’s Camarata Orchestra and a fifth-grader at Mount Bethel Elementary School who joined GYSO three years ago. She has advanced to a higher-level ensemble each school year since, all while making new friends from different schools. “I love the challenge of playing harder and harder music and seeing my friends each week,” said Antonia.
Impacting Futures: Will Weaver, a
senior at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, has been a violist with GYSO for the past six years. Currently a member of GYSO’s most-advanced Symphony Orchestra, as well as its Honors String Quartet, Will plans to attend college next year as a music major and credits his GYSO experiences as being influential in receiving several scholarship offers. “One thing I’ve really enjoyed about GYSO is how many different ensembles there are, so you have opportunities to focus on things that might not be offered in school orchestral programs, like chamber music.” What sets GYSO apart is its dedication to providing a nurturing and supportive environment for young musicians to develop their skills and perform at the highest level. Led by professionals in their fields, each ensemble works tirelessly to prepare for performances throughout the year, giving students a comprehensive music experience that fosters excellence on both an individual and collective level. Auditions are now in progress for the fall 2024 season. For more information about the GYSO program, audition process or need-based scholarships, visit georgiayouthsymphony.org.

About Actor’s Express
Actor’s Express was founded in 1988 by Chris Coleman and Harold M. Leaver. Originally located in a church basement on Clairmont Road, the Express soon moved to a location in Inman Park where it remained until 1994. Since that time, AE has been in West Midtown’s King Plow Arts Center, a sprawling complex converted from a former plow factory.
Founder Chris Coleman led the theatre until 2000. He was succeeded by Wier Harmon, who served as Artistic Director until 2003. Upon Herman’s departure, Jasson Minadakis took the reins and served until 2006. Since July 2007, Freddie Ashley has been serving as the theater’s Artistic Director.
For 35 years, AE has been considered one of the most daring, provocative and high-caliber theatres in Atlanta. The work continues to appear on local best-of lists and has garnered dozens of awards. actors-express.com.

Atlanta Master Chorale Celebrates our 40th Anniversary Season
Looking back at the past and forward towards the future
Alot has happened in the past forty years! 1985 was dotted with many notable events around Atlanta, from Chick-fil-A’s Dwarf House opening to the Prince and the Revolution and Grateful Dead concerts, to the advent of the first Sony portable Discman. Through all the countless events, Atlanta Master Chorale has grown and evolved, providing captivating and inspiriting music to the Atlanta community.
Now in our fourth decade, the chorale has crafted one of America’s finest choral sounds, bringing singers and audiences to a place “where music touches spirit.”
Under the exceptional leadership of Dr. Eric Nelson, our professionally trained volunteer community choir has been propelled to amazing artistic heights. And throughout the years, we have consistently brought something of beauty and lasting value into the lives of people who hear our music.
Even during the pause in live performances caused by COVID-19, Atlanta Master Chorale continued delivering on our mission to touch spirit. Through our Virtual Concert Hall, we remained connected with our faithful patrons and
drew a broader audience, reaching new listeners both nationally and globally. Our YouTube channel now has more than 2.5 million views, and Atlanta Master Chorale’s performances have been viewed in all 50 states and more than 100 countries worldwide.
As we celebrate 40 years of spirittouching music, we are thrilled to announce our 2024-2025 concert season. We begin October 18 and 19 with A Choral Tapestry, celebrating the beauty of each individual piece’s uniqueness while weaving an integrated tapestry through the program in its entirety. Then get in the holiday spirit with three performances of Christmas with Atlanta Master Chorale on December 13, 14 and 15. We continue our season’s journey with Pathways on March 14 and 15. Come along as we plot a course, blaze a trail, or maybe choose the road less traveled. And the season concludes with An Evening with Mozart, featuring Mozart’s well-loved classical works, Requiem and Coronation Mass
