THE ARTISTRY OF MASTER Metal artist

Andrew T. Crawford – Iron is King By Alicia Jenkins, Photos by Erica George Dines “A gate is like an open palette. It’s space I can fill however I want. One beautiful thing, unlike a painting on the wall, is that you can see through a gate. What makes it beautiful is its setting. The gate functions as its own world. You can see beyond it or in front of it….The metaphor for a gate is that it is a passage.” – Andrew Crawford

Andrew Crawford was born in Chatham, New Jersey in 1970. He moved to Atlanta with his parents and two older brothers in 1971. Crawford’s youthful artistic endeavors included works in clay, drawing, and music. Andrew’s grandmother, recognizing his enthusiasm, encouraged him along with his parents who allowed him to set up a workshop in his home. Crawford attended the Rhode Island School of Design where he studied sculpture. After graduating in 1993, he returned to Atlanta and opened his workshop and studio, the Andrew T Crawford Ironworks. His goal was to create functional objects with an emphasis on blacksmithing. As Crawford built his business and his clientele, he continued to receive attention for his unique ornamental gates. This format has consistently been an identifiable trait throughout his career. Along with dozens of private commissions, Crawford has created ironwork and sculpture for schools, businesses, and municipalities. Some of his most prominent works have been for the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the City of Washington D.C. His works are also among the collections of several American museums. Crawford currently employs three full-time craftsmen who collaborate with him in making sculpture and functional objects of original design. He lives in a small in-town neighborhood with his two young children. Andrew Crawford’s garden gates are on display at the Atlanta Botanical Garden and The State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens. Please contact the Andrew T Crawford Ironworks for current exhibition and commission information. SERENBE PLAYHOUSE DREAMS BIG!

a

by robyn Young fter the astounding success of its second season, Serenbe Playhouse dares to dream bigger as they enter their third year with their aptly titled, Season of Dreams.

Serenbe Playhouse takes advantage of Mother Nature in ways other outdoor stage plays aspire to but seldom actually achieve. — Curt Holman, Creative Loafing

Founded in 2009 under the executive and artistic direction of esteemed actor, director, and producer Brian Clowdus, the critically acclaimed Serenbe Playhouse believes that theatre is an art form with a unique power to illuminate the human experience; and does so by producing artistically rich, open-air, site-specific theatrical performances. Deemed a “playhouse in paradise” by Atlanta Magazine, Serenbe Playhouse opened in the summer of 2010 to glowing reviews and high audience demand. In its inaugural year, the Playhouse successfully produced a diverse lineup of performances, including the childhood favorite The Jungle Book, the musical John and Jen, and the provocative Shakespeare’s R&J. Following up with 2011’s Season of Premieres, the Playhouse delivered a stellar second year with Ordinary Days (nominated for the Suzi Bass Award for Best Ensemble), an original adaptation of The Ugly Duckling, and Shipwrecked!. Clowdus is building a company of young actors, designers and technicians who clearly find joy in the natural possibilities of this environmental laboratory. — Wendell Brock, The AJC

In under three years, Serenbe Playhouse has exceeded all expectations and ascended to be among the top theatres in the Metro Atlanta area. The Playhouse is proud to be recognized as 2011’s “Best Place to See a Play” by Lifestyle Magazine and “Best of Atlanta: Stage Under the Stars” by Atlanta Magazine. With a dazzling lineup, this summer is sure to amaze as Serenbe Playhouse presents a World Premiere adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic Alice in Wonderland by Atlanta playwright Rachel Teagle (June 1 - July 28), followed by A Midsummer Night’s Dream (June 28 - July 15) as you’ve never seen it before, and concluding with the Regional World Premiere of the enthralling, new musical, Time Between Us, by Bret Schrier and Tess Barker (July 26 - August 18). by Michael o’neal and Cammie stephens he Michael O’Neal Singers join with the Tri-Cities High School Chorale, the Georgia Spiritual Ensemble, and professional actors and musicians to present Donald McCullough’s groundbreaking work, “Let My People Go! A Spiritual Journey Along the Underground Railroad. Celebrating two of America’s most venerable cultural traditions—the African-American Spiritual and the Underground Railroad—Let My People Go! explores the resourcefulness of slaves who cleverly created code songs by burying hidden messages within much of their music, which not only inspired fellow slaves to attempt escape but instructed them in how to use the Underground Railroad in their flight for freedom. The Visual and Performing Arts Magnet program at Tri-Cities High School has been an awardwinning program for almost 20 years. Known for its musical versatility, the Tri-Cities HS Chorale has been featured at numerous conferences, and conventions such as the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA), and the National Association of Black Educators (NABE). The Georgia Spiritual Ensemble was created to further the enduring legacy and tradition of the Negro Spiritual. The GSE sings traditional and arranged spirituals that have been popularized throughout the twentieth century. The Ensemble is dedicated to sustaining the tradition of the Spiritual by bringing to life the feelings, emotions and musical genius found in this uniquely American art form. The Michael O’Neal Singers organization is comprised of a symphonic chorus of 135 voices and a chamber ensemble of 28. Established by Dr. Michael O’Neal in 1989 and based in Roswell, MOS performs a diverse repertoire ranging from classical masterworks to jazz and musical theatre standards. This extraordinary collaborative concert takes place May 6 at 3:00 p.m. at Roswell United Methodist Church in Historic Roswell, and will be repeated in a free performance at Tri-Cities High School in East Point on May 7. CatCh Up with JUstin anderson

J

ustin Anderson is an Atlanta fav. In 2010 and 2011, he directed the holiday hit THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER for Synchronicity Theatre. “It boasts a cast of 23 actors, including 10 children,” shares Anderson, “and while that many kids don’t quite add up to a Miss-Hannigan-type dilemma, there were several moments when bathtub gin could have been my best friend.” All kidding aside, Anderson loves directing this show saying, “It was a wonderfully satisfying project and simple, in a very rich way, which can be hard to achieve, especially during the holiday season.” This spring he’s directing John Glore’s adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s penultimate novel, A WRINKLE IN TIME, at Theatrical Outfit. “The novel is woven into the fabric of my childhood—I still remember the first time I read the book after purchasing it from the Scholastic Book Fair in 3rd grade”. When asked about the challenges of presenting an adaptation of such a beloved tale Anderson very candidly replies, “The task of bringing it to stage is both exhilarating and daunting because it is laden with so many expectations. And while no adaptation is perfect, I think folks will be floored with the magic we bring to this production. And for that reason, I cannot wait to share it with audiences.” And what’s up next for this can’t stop, won’t stop director? This summer you can catch his work at the Serenbe Playhouse, directing the regional world premiere of a new two-person musical called TIME BETWEEN US. He’ll utilize the Serenbe Stables as our canvas on which to tell this unconventional but deeply personal love story. When asked what about the love story is unconventional, the director lets us in on a little something, “The story is unconventional because it is not about a romance; rather, it is about a friendship, tested and tried over the course of thirty years, structured much like going through a scrapbook of memories and defining moments. The music is breathtaking, scored only with a piano and cello.” And who can beat that combination? 10

New Season, Fresh Start for Georgia Shakespeare in 2012

I

By Marci Tate

n this turn-around year for Georgia Shakespeare, the 26-year-old theatre company is presenting a diverse season of new musicals, bold interpretations of beloved classics, and the return of one of Atlanta’s favorite theatre traditions. “After our emergency fundraising campaign in the fall of 2011, we really wanted to show Atlanta that our artistic work would be just as strong, if not stronger, than ever,” said Producing Artistic Director Richard Garner. “Our upcoming season is a testament to our continued commitment to produce shows that entertain, ignite the imagination, and explore the journey of the human spirit.” With the help of a three-year, $300,000 grant from the Charles Loridans Foundation, Georgia Shakespeare is returning to Piedmont Park this year with their outdoor theatre event. Formerly known as “Shake at the Lake,” the event has been renamed “Shakespeare in the Park,” reflecting its new location at the Legacy Fountain in Piedmont Park. Shakespeare’s The Tempest will run May 9 – 13, with shows beginning at 7:30 p.m. and picnicking before and during the performances. The season continues in June at the Conant Performing Arts Center with the popular Summer Festival. Opening June 5, Illyria: a Twelfth Night Musical is an adaptation by John R. Briggs, the creator of the 2010 smash hit Shrew: the Musical. Next audiences travel to Italy with Shakespeare’s romantic comedy Much Ado About Nothing (June 21 – Aug. 4), directed by Garner. In July, the company will present The Importance of Being Earnest (July 5 – Aug. 3). This production will be the first time that Georgia Shakespeare has ever presented a play by Oscar Wilde, who is also the inspiration for the 2012 Bard’s Bash: A Wilde Night (May 4). The Family Classic Series also returns with the musical The Emperor and the Nightingale (July 14 – Aug. 3), adapted from the Hans Christian Andersen story. “We’re so incredibly grateful to continue to be a part of this city’s vibrant arts community, and we cannot wait to welcome Atlanta back to the Bard in 2012,” said Garner. Arrgh, mateys!

by daniel summers, Jr.

Get ready to hoist the mainsail on adventure with a buccaneer twist on a classic fairy tale. This June, the Center for Puppetry Arts is proud to present The Little Pirate Mermaid by Jon Ludwig. But, just what is a “Little Pirate Mermaid” and what makes the story exciting for the whole family? Well, in this marionette extravaganza, audiences will be engulfed as the Sea King’s daughter falls in love with a swashbuckling pirate, after saving him from a terrible battle. Her only chance to win his heart is to make a deal with the evil Sea Hag: she can become a pirate and join her fair captain, but only if she surrenders her voice and if he falls in love with her. Sound familiar? It should as Center for Puppetry Arts Artistic Director Jon Ludwig took Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, The Little Mermaid, but set the story in a nautical world. It seems that though everyone loves a good pirate story, some young audiences aren’t always as ready to admit loving a good mermaid or princess story. By casting the show with some good-humored pirates, Ludwig hoped to capture the attentions of both girls and boys (not to mention Mom and Dad). Ludwig’s gambit paid off; the show premiered in 2009 to rave reviews and even garnered a well-deserved UNIMA Citation of Excellence, considered to be the “Oscar” of Puppetry. Creating a world premiere puppet show could call for rough seas, but the artists at the Center for Puppetry Arts know how to keep things shipshape. Puppet Designer Jason von Hinezmeyer led a crew of talented artisans as they handcrafted over 40 puppets, mostly marionettes (string puppets), which are a perfect medium for creating a sense of weightless, “underwater” floating. The story is complete with colorful creatures such as a talking parrot, a dolphin, other sea dwellers, and of course lots of pirates! Audiences all agreed that Ludwig’s creativity and direction crafted a fishtail worthy of attention. This June’s show promises to be just as great a spectacle with something for everyone and an allages appeal. The Little Pirate Mermaid plays June 14 to July 15 at the Center for Puppetry Arts. n the fall of 1916, a 925-seat theater, the Southeast’s largest movie house, opened in the Central Business District and the original theater district of Atlanta. The theater’s name was the Rialto, which is defined as exchange or marketplace. The Rialto continued to operate during the Depression and at one point in its history boasted the largest electric sign above the marquee south of New York City. In 1962, the original theater was torn down and a new 1,200-seat Rialto was erected on the same site. It was the first movie theater to be constructed in downtown Atlanta in 35 years and stayed open until 1989 before falling victim to a declining downtown economy. In 1991, Dr. Richard Koehler, then director of the School of Music at Georgia State University, was approached by real estate consultant David Haddow about relocating the School to several vacant buildings in the block bounded by Forsyth, Luckie, Fairlie and Poplar streets. As an advocate for a downtown performing arts center, Dr. Koehler quickly sized up the opportunities offered by a move to the historic district. Here was a chance for Georgia State to make a major cultural contribution to the city with a firstclass performance hall and, at the same time, the university could further weave itself into the fabric of downtown Atlanta. Following a very successful $14 million fund-raising campaign, led by Georgia State University president Carl V. Patton and A.W. “Bill” Dahlberg, a GSU alumnus and president of the Southern Company, construction began in the fall of 1994 on the old Rialto Theater and the historic Haas-Howell and Standard Buildings. Extensive renovations were needed to make the Rialto a state-of-the-art concert and performance hall. The Rialto Center for the Performing Arts now boasts superb acoustics after the theater’s roof was raised 12 feet. Interior renovations include a larger lobby to handle patrons, box office facilities, ADAaccessible improvements, new stage with proscenium, orchestra pit and 833 new comfortable seats. The eight-floor Haas-Howell Building houses the backstage facilities, the Dahlberg Room (our Green Room), and administrative offices for the Rialto Center on the second and third floors. In March 1996, the reopening of the 833-seat Rialto Center for the Performing Arts marked a turning point in the revitalization of the historic Fairlie-Poplar District of downtown Atlanta. Since the reopening of the Rialto, more than 600,000 patrons have experienced performances ranging from theater to dance to music offerings including jazz, blues, rock, and classical. The old Rialto Theater has been successfully transformed into a first-class performance venue and, true to its definition, the Rialto is once again a place where ideas and experiences in the arts are being exchanged. XANADU Brings ZanY, 80s fUn to aCtor’s eXpress May 12-June 16 (Previews May 10 & 11) by Jenny Costantino anadu, that campy, cult-y over-the-top homage to that campy, cult-y Olivia Newton-John 1980 movie by the same name, opens May 12 at Actor’s Express under Sherri D. Sutton’s meticulous direction, and choreographed by the inimitable Ricardo Aponte. Lindsay Lamb Archer is our Greek demi-goddess, Clio/Kira, opposite Sonny, the would-be ‘artist in chalk’, portrayed by Jordan A. Craig. The uproarious musical is set in 1980, a posited cultural turning point and the year “Xanadu”, the movie, dawned. Clio, our heroine, roams Venice Beach, California, and ultimately lends her super-power support to hunky Sonny, our chalk-mural artist, who’s long on looks and short on talent, and who dreams of having his own roller disco. Yes, that’s really the premise, tongue-in-cheek though it may be... Oh! And there’s a lot of really awesome 80s music. The surprise hit of the 2007-08 Broadway season, Xanadu roller skates its way into the closing slot of Actor’s Express’ incredible comeback season. A year after teetering on the edge of collapse, Actor’s Express finds itself in good stead, with a solid season and a wealth of positive reviews and new patrons under its belt. Xanadu looks to be a deserved, rollicking good time for the company. “We are so excited about having a houseful of fun every night as we close out this fantastic season!”, says Artistic Director Freddie Ashley. “Doing Xanadu is something we’ve toyed with over the years and it turns out that this celebratory season is the perfect time for it.” There is an onstage dance party with the cast after each performance—and the music will have you shamelessly singing aloud—you don’t want to miss this one! The show opens on Saturday, May 12, with previews on May 10 and 11, and runs through June 16. Tickets start at $25 and are going fast! Visit www.actorsexpress. com or call the box office at 404-607-SHOW (7469). The company will announce its 2012-13 Season during the run of Xanadu.

The surprise hit of the 2007-08 Broadway season roller skates its way onto the Actor’s Express stage in a frothy explosion of camp, comedy and disco! Xanadu pays hilarious homage to Olivia Newton-John’s notorious 1980 film of the same name. A feather-haired Greek muse with an Australian accent descends from Mount Olympus to modern-day California to help a hunky young man open a roller disco. onstage atlanta presents tony award drama, doubt: a parable

Human connections, be it brief or long lasting, random or planned, have the potential to lift awareness and shift perspective, creating a new sense of balance amidst uncertainty. The constantly evolving energy of urban consciousness and the vastness of these personal exchanges therein provide the inspiration behind... EQUILIFTRIUM. Choreographed by Cherrise Wakeham. Dancers: Mary Frances Doss, Caroline Fagan, Torrie Gold, Sam Janus, Ashley Watson, and Adrienne Hicks (understudy). Music by Nathan Fake, James Blake, Bjork, Zoe Keating, The Album Leaf, James Vincent McMorrow, Regina Spektor, Imogen Heap and more. July 20 and 21, 8:PM at The Balzer Theatre @ Herrens, 84 Luckie Street, Atlanta, GA 30303, 1-877-725-8849.

When Sister Aloysius, the principal of an inner city Catholic school, suspects their progressive, new priest of an improper relationship with the school’s first African American student, she takes matters into her own hands. But is Father Flynn guilty of misconduct, or is he the victim of misguided suspicions? Mystery reigns as doubt thwarts all assumptions of certainty in this Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning drama set against the backdrop of the civil rights era. ©2012 Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Porsche recommends seat belt usage and observance of all traffic laws at all times.

Same principles. New weight class. This isn’t just a new 911. It is the ushering in of a new era of the sports car. The history-making begins with 90% new or fundamentally revised materials. 400 horsepower from a powerfully efficient 3.8 liter engine in the Carrera S. And even the interior breaks new ground, with an elevated center console, inspired by the Carrera GT, connecting car and driver like never before. These are the things legends are made of. Even if it’s becoming a legend all over again.

The new era starts with a test drive. Call today.
