hen Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre opened in September 2007, it was metro Atlanta’s first major performing arts facility in four decades. Its governing body, the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum & Exhibit Hall Authority had high expectations. For artists, entertainers and event booking agents, the new venue was a long-awaited addition to the South’s rapidly growing metropolis. With 2017 marking a milestone year, take a look at how far the Centre has come.
Exhibit Hall Authority, the governing body for Cobb Galleria Centre, Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, and ArtsBridge Foundation. “We knew that the Performing Arts Centre’s success would be determined by our programming and our outreach; therefore, we were deliberate in designing the venue to accommodate all facets of performing arts and entertainment—opera, concerts, dance, comedy, Broadway shows, family shows, cultural celebrations, awards events, corporate meetings, and social events.”
AN AMBITIOUS VISION Over the past 10 years, Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre has established a reputation as a premier, world-class arts and events venue not only in the region, but also nationally and internationally. It is home to two outstanding resident companies, Atlanta Ballet and The Atlanta Opera, and its arts education initiative ArtsBridge Foundation has become a national model for programming. “The CobbMarietta Coliseum & Exhibit Hall Authority’s vision was to partner strong civic leadership, powerful philanthropic values, and a committed passion for the performing arts and entertainment,” says Michele Swann, general manager and CEO of the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum &
EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS Tens of thousands of people from all over Georgia and neighboring states come to Cobb Energy Centre every year to attend performances in the John A. Williams Theatre as well as conferences and special events in the beautiful Kessel D. Stelling Ballroom. In 2016 alone, Cobb Energy Centre hosted 270 performances and events and welcomed almost 300,000 guests. Since 2008, the Centre’s first full year of operation, it has racked up more than 2,000 events, with more than two million people in attendance. The economic impact is impressive: Since 2008, Cobb County has seen nearly $132 million, and Georgia, close to $186 million.

CREATIVE PROCESS: Theatrical Outfit’s 2017-2018 Offerings Constitute a “Season of Character”
“Living life as though we all have a gift to give is a wonderful possibility.”

“I
n the theatre, our agenda is to successfully tell a story,” explains Theatrical Outfit’s Artistic Director Tom Key, one of Atlanta’s most prominent and philosophically driven artists. Theatrical Outfit’s 2017-2018 Season will realize this agenda by presenting plays based on high profile or otherwise strong characters as the main focus of each production. The personality of Quasimodo in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (in collaboration with Gwinnett’s Aurora Theatre) launches the season, and Lizzie Curry in “110 in the Shade” closes it. In between there will be a young boy who identifies as a girl, Elizabeth Bennett’s younger sister Mary, Billie Holiday, and a couple of couples who explore the possibilities of a “shared closet door.” Key describes the upcoming year as “a season of character.” He states, “When an audience member takes the whole journey with us next year, my hope is that they will understand deeply the truth of Heraclites proposition: Character is destiny.” By experiencing the various personalities and their struggles throughout the 2017-2018 season, Key belies that “We can witness the power of character to transcend. It gives
promise to the possibility that life itself is ultimately a ‘Divine Comedy.’” Key is also a proponent that Theatrical Outfit “start conversations that matter.” He says, “Every season offers a series of these ‘conversation starter’ stories, and we attract a diverse audience eager to find common ground with others through the art form of theatre.” Theatrical Outfit has a number of unique ways for participants to start conversations. An art gallery in the upper lobby, a ‘conversation corner’ bulletin board in the main lobby, post-show discussions and an online audience survey insure that those who experience the upcoming season’s character-driven performances will have ample opportunity for sharing their thoughts about what they have seen. The new season with its wide variety of strong personalities is also a type of gift to the community. Key says. “Living life as though we all have a gift to give is a wonderful possibility. When we commit as a team to a season of plays and musicals, I choose to believe that a gift has been readied and this chance to prepare it and to give it is a sustaining joy.”

T
he Atlanta Musical Theatre Festival, now in its second year, was born out of a desire to motivate artists to continue to write musical theatre. Benjamin Davis, Founder and Executive Artistic Director, and an actor and producer, inspired by his participation in the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2015, saw an opportunity to nurture the writing population in the Atlanta community. Davis set out with the following mission: to cultivate the next generation of theatre artists by mentoring talent, propelling new musicals forward, and celebrating the community in a supportive, nurturing, and creative environment. The inaugural festival in 2016 was a big success—the artists’ interest in submitting pieces, and the public’s interest in seeing the selections told Ben he was on to something. “This year, AMTF received submissions from all over the world including Australia, New Zealand, and Russia. It was stunning!” says Founder and Executive Artistic Director, Benjamin Davis. “Our selections committee set a three-night festival, featuring three diverse and eclectic new musicals. We are very excited to see how these new musicals will impact our community, and as always, we hope this experience is beneficial to the development of these pieces.” This year’s selections are:
In the Middle of the Ocean is a one-man punk rock opera adaptation of the myth of Orpheus, set in a pirate brothel in the Atlantic Ocean—equal parts fiery rock concert and virtuosic storytelling. Book, Music and Lyrics by Chris Alonzo. Cakewalk is a spicy satire set in 1917 Claxton, Georgia, with an eclectic score. The patriarch’s heated race for mayor is complicated by the unfortunate behavior of his family and servants. (The Clugstons of 1917 Georgia bear an uncanny resemblance to 2017 America.) Book and Lyrics by Beverly Trader Austin. Music by Bryan Mercer. Mother of God is the story of Mary’s journey, adapted from the gospels of Matthew and Luke, revealing the strength, sacrifices, and fortitude required to be the mother of God. Book and Lyrics by Christian Albright. Music by Christian Magby. Performances are at Out Front Theatre, in Atlanta’s Westside, on July 30, 31, and August 1, at 8pm. Tickets are on sale at www.TheAMTF. com, and donations and sponsorships are still available as well. Be a part of the future of musical theatre!

T
he Beatles! The legendary band was only together for a decade, but its music and message have had more impact on people of all ages—then and now—than probably any other band. Ever. The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus is excited to conclude its 36th season with two performances of the show Revolution at the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State in downtown Atlanta on Friday and Saturday, June 30-July 1. Tickets are now available through at Voices of Note website or the Rialto Box Office. Prices range from $15 to $35. The Beatles hit Atlanta on August 18, 1965. Many members of AGMC weren’t either living in or near Atlanta, some weren’t even born when the Fab Four came to the city. On August 18, 1965, the Beatles were welcomed by a screaming, appreciative crowd as they performed in the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Two months later, they were back in London to receive merits from the queen for their international fame and contribution to England’s financial health!
Kevin Robison, artistic director of AGMC states, “With the Beatles’ huge catalog of such popular music, we had a challenge to get everyone’s favorites into the show; we got many suggestions and ideas from audience members and singers. We just couldn’t resist building a show that adds many of the Beatles’ songs in a fast-paced, energetic performance that will be complete with multi-media, funka-delic lighting, colorful costumes, dancing… the works!” “The Beatles were brilliant in their work, resolved in their politics, and the message threading through their body of work makes a strong case for a non-violent revolution against the systems that were dividing society then—and are still at play today,” Robison noted. “‘Revolution’ is the message of hope, love and freedom that we all need. From “Imagine” to “St. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “All You Need is Love,” and much more. Revolution will be a fun, uplifting event that undoubtedly will have the audience singing along as they rock to the music.”
