City Springs Theatre Company Announces 2022-23 PNC Bank Season

T

his September, City Springs Theatre Company will kick off its fifth season of musicals at the Byers Theatre in the beautiful Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center. The company, which is led by Executive Director Natalie DeLancey and Tony Award winner and Atlanta native Shuler Hensley as its Artistic Director, has set a high standard for its productions, most recently mounting acclaimed runs of the musicals A Chorus Line and The Color Purple. The fifth season offers a mix of classics and more recent Broadway fare — three of which are Best Musical Tony Award winners! The 2022-2023 PNC Bank Season opens in September with the Cole Porter musical-comedy ANYTHING GOES (September 9 - 25, 2022), featuring timeless songs such as “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “You’re the Top,” “Friendship,” “It’s DeLovely,“ ”Easy to Love,” and the title song, “Anything Goes”! Then, it’s IN THE HEIGHTS (October 21 - November 6, 2022), the crowd-pleasing first Broadway musical from the Tony , Pulitzer and Grammy award-winning creator of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda. IN THE HEIGHTS tells the universal story

6

of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood — a place where the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. Back on schedule (after a 2-year delay by the pandemic) is the silly and sublime MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT (March 10 26, 2023), which retells the legend of King Arthur, his Knights of the Round Table, and of their search for the elusive Holy Grail. Assisted in their journey by the glamorous Lady of the Lake, the knights sing and dance their way through medieval England, encountering cows, chorus girls, a killer rabbit, and assorted French people. The season finishes on a high note as Tony Award-recipient Baayork Lee returns to direct and choreograph the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber musical CATS (May 5 - May 21, 2023). Based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot, this international hit musical features one of the most treasured songs in all of musical theatre — ”Memory”. New subscriptions will be available to the public beginning June 21, 2022. Complete details can be found at CitySpringsTheatre.com/subscribe.

SF will present two enchanting musical productions on the Festival Stage this summer. In May, The Marvelous Wonderettes take center stage with their 1958 Springfield High School prom and 10-year reunion. Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy have hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts. They’ll harmonize about their loves and lives with more than 30 classic ’50s and ’60s hits, including “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” and “Lipstick on Your Collar”. Wrapping up Season 50 in July and August, American Mariachi will bring family, tradition, progress, and the freedom to dream big to the Festival Stage. Lucha spends her days caring for her ailing mother. Yearning to break free from her

life’s monotony, she comes up with a wild idea: an all-girl mariachi band. But it’s the 1970s, and girls can’t be mariachis … or can they? “This is a really lovely romantic comedy about these young women who are pushing against a society saying they can and cannot do certain things,” said ASF Artistic Director Rick Dildine, “and the show has live mariachi music throughout the whole thing.” Also in July, the Southern Writers Festival of new plays will be held on July 16, and the Garden Glow outdoor concert series returns to the ASF Shakespeare Garden on Friday nights. Stay tuned for more details and be the first to learn about them by signing up for our newsletter at ASF.net.

Get ready — an exhilarating season is about to unfold for Atlanta Master Chorale!

W

hat a thrilling season it has been as Atlanta Master Chorale returned to the stage for live performances. We are grateful to our patrons who made our return to in-person concerts possible and excited to announce that the concert hall will be returning to full capacity for our 2022-2023 season. We can’t wait to see you there! The chorale has been touching our audience’s hearts and spirits with the transformative power of choral music for almost 40 years, and we are delighted to present another round of thrilling concert programs for our 2022-2023 concert season. We kick off our season on October 14 and 15 with a program titled In The Middle, a celebration of the joys found in the present moment. One of the pieces on this program we are most excited about is a work for choir and chamber orchestra on a Dylan Thomas text called “Fern Hill”. Next we get into the holiday spirit with three performances of Christmas with Atlanta Master Chorale on December 9, 10 and 11. We look forward to seeing you, along with your family, friends, and

neighbors as we sing music of joy and peace, of light and love. Our March 10 and 11 concerts, themed Magnificat, will feature choral works based on the ancient liturgical text that is both a hymn of praise and a prayer for justice. The program will include choral settings from the Renaissance to the present, culminating with the celebrated Bach Magnificat. We will conclude the season with energy and vitality on April 28 and 29 with a performance of the High Lonesome Bluegrass Mass, featuring the Chuck Nation Band. The concert will also include additional selections that are inspired by the folk songs and hymns that arise out of the bluegrass tradition. It will surely be an exhilarating season. Season tickets and other concert packages are available now, and individual tickets go on sale August 1. Our Atlanta ShowGuide patrons receive a $5 discount on individual adult concert tickets by using the code AMCShowguide at checkout. Alliance Theatre Opens Its 2022/23 Season with The Incredible Book Eating Boy

T

he Alliance Theatre will open its 54th season this spring on the Hertz Stage with THE INCREDIBLE BOOK EATING BOY, inspired by award-winning children’s book author Oliver Jeffers’ hilarious book about a boy named Henry, who loves books. But he hates reading them. Because books are so full of... words! Annoying, complicated, indecipherable words! Then one day he discovers the most amazing alternative to reading — eating the books

whole. By chowing down, chomping, and literally digesting the contents of whole libraries, Henry gets smarter, and smarter and smarter... until his tummy doesn’t feel so good. A story about literally biting off more than you can chew, this new musical celebrates the joy of reading and the insatiable appetite for knowledge. Soon to follow in September is EVERYBODY by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Obie Award winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, an irreverent, rollicking, uproarious ride that asks BIG questions of all who see it. Jacobs-Jenkins is described as “one of this country’s most original and illuminating writers” by The New York Times. School Street Playhouse Presents A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

34 Years of The Michael O’Neal Singers The Michael O’Neal Singers (MOS) organization launches its 34th concert season with its first inperson Summer Singers program in three years! Celebrate! Music for Joyous Occasions features a chorus of over 100 voices and a chamber orchestra performing music from Handel, Vaughan Williams, Mathias, and Rutter, among others, in a collection of celebratory music all performed for birthdays, weddings, and coronations. This performance will take place Sunday, July 24 at Roswell UMC in Historic Roswell, Georgia, and will be streamed as well. Composed of a symphonic chorus of 115 auditioned voices, the Kaleidoscope vocal ensemble of 36, and an annual community summer program, MOS provides a unique opportunity to metropolitan Atlanta and beyond (via the MOS ONLINE program) to experience choral presentations of artistic excellence and programmatic variety. Visit www.mosingers.com for more information about The Michael O’Neal Singers.

Presents A Funny Thing School Street Happened on the Way to the Forum is a fast-paced farce that promises to have audiences rolling on the floor. Taking straight from the roots of comedy, Forum combines the ancient comedies of Plautus with a vaudevillian delivery. Pseudolus schemes to win the heart of the beautiful virgin, Phelia, for his young master, Hero. In exchange, Hero will grant Pseudolus his freedom once and for all. Chaos ensues with hairbrained schemes, cases of mistaken identity, slamming doors and convoluted plot twists. One of the funniest musicals ever written, Forum promises: “Something for everyone: a comedy tonight!” For more visit www.schoolstreetplayhouse.com
