Sign up for The Atlanta Opera Film Studio channel and binge watch great opera through your favorite streaming service for free! Just like Netflix or Disney+, the Atlanta Opera has its own online channel. However, unlike those channels, The Atlanta Opera Film Studio offers great content at no charge. The channel is stuffed with video treats including interviews with performers and the creative team members, charming character profiles, 5-minute summaries of operas (both new and traditional), selected aria performances, and best of all… free, full-length opera performances by The Atlanta Opera.
“The Opera’s Film Studio is for someone who’s simply curious about opera as much as for someone who really loves it already,” says Tomer Zvulun, Atlanta Opera’s Carl W. Knobloch General & Artistic Director. “Our Film Studio productions capture the full stage view, but also the close-up details of the singers that carry the deeper emotions of a performance.”
Six livestream replays will be available on the free service, plus the cinematic film version of The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, with more features to come. The free
livestream replays include Bluebeard’s Castle by Béla Bartók, Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini, Don Giovanni by W.A. Mozart, The Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini, The Anonymous Lover by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, and Das Rheingold by Richard Wager.
The upgraded premium service for this channel includes even more full-length operas to watch. At $5 per month, you unlock additional titles of fully produced cinematic operas in HD. Those titles include Julius Caesar by George Frideric Handel, The Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert & Sullivan, and creatively staged pandemicera productions of Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo, The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht, the intensely moving chamber opera The Kaiser of Atlantis that was created in a Nazi concentration camp by Victor Ullman, and a sizzlingly creative adaptation of Bizet’s Carmen titled The Threepenny Carmen.

Every year, the nation’s dance community comes together for an inspiring and invigorating national conference, and a highlight of the gathering will be the recognition of individuals who have made indelible marks on the dance profession. This June, the Dance/USA Conference will be held in Atlanta, and three of the honorees are long-time Atlanta Dance Luminaries: Nena Y. Gilreath, Waverly T. Lucas II and Douglas Scott. They, along with Virginia Johnson and Judy Tyrus, will be celebrated for their lasting impact on the national dance “ecosystem”.
Atlanta has long been a center of dance, but without the vision, commitment and passion of the three honorees, the local and regional dance landscape would look very different. Through their own performing careers, and by founding and directing nationallyknown dance companies, they have created dance opportunities for the traditionally underserved, including people of color and those of varying physical abilities.
Married dance professionals Nena Y. Gilreath and
Waverly T. Lucas formed the professional ballet company Ballethnic in Atlanta over 30 years ago to create visibility for Black and Brown Dancers. From the beginning, Gilreath and Lucas focused on increasing equity in mainstream ballet by providing professional-level training and performance opportunities. The company is known for its original productions, blending ballet with African dance concepts, and for its highquality dance training through the Academy of Dance, Youth Ensemble and Danseur Development Project. www.ballethnic.org
Douglas Scott, founder and artistic director of Full Radius Dance, has redefined the boundaries of dance by bringing together disabled and nondisabled dancers through performances, education and advocacy. His professional modern dance company, Full Radius Dance, integrates dance movement with wheelchairs, resulting in dynamic and exhilarating dance performances. Scott first began exploring physical movement integration through a partnership with VSA of Georgia, Shepherd Center and Special Audiences. As he taught people with physical disabilities, he began creating an inclusive and challenging modern dance technique for all physical abilities.
Today, his work is known for its distinct style, artistry and inclusiveness. In addition to his work as a performer and choreographer, Scott is the founder of the Modern Atlanta Dance (MAD) Festival.

Following on the heels of acclaimed, recent productions of Monty Python’s Spamalot and Cats, the announcement of Jersey Boys is a mammoth win for
City Springs Theatre Company, and is a must-see for fans of both musicals and of live music. City Springs Theatre Company brings the Mega-hit Jersey Boys to North Atlanta for Summer 2024!
February 9-11, 2024 Choreography by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, North American Premiere
Launched in Hong Kong to rave reviews and sell-out crowds, Atlanta Ballet will present the North American premiere of Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion Icon from February 9 to 11, 2024, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
Acclaimed Belgian-Colombian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s original full-length narrative ballet will delve into the complex life of one of the 20th century’s most intriguing iconoclasts. The woman who launched a global fashion empire, Coco Chanel redefined the world of fashion, and more than a century later her legacy continues. That legacy is defined in part by Chanel’s brilliant designs, shrewd business acumen, and glamorous lifestyle; it is also defined by controversy and opportunism in her rise to the top.
Through Ochoa’s wide range of dance training and acclaim for depicting modern narrative scenes in abstract and concise movements, she portrays Chanel’s life and polarizing reputation through ballet. “I am interested in telling stories about strong historical women,” said Ochoa. “Behind the surface of a strong woman, there is always a hidden emotional story full of hardships
and flaws.”
Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion
Icon will portray the essence of Coco Chanel’s life, highlighting her innovation in fashion, rise from poverty, and colorful love affairs in an almost mythical rags-to-riches and often complicated story, complete with theatrical effects, stunning stage designs — staircases, mannequins, workshop tables — and exquisite costumes featuring the infamous sleek hats, bouclé jackets and pearls.
The North American premiere brings together an award-winning creative team, with artistic collaboration by Nancy Meckler, set and costume design by Jérôme Kaplan, and original score by Peter Salem.
Described by the Hong Kong Economic Journal as ‘’an excellent creation; thoughtful and original, deeply expressionistic and theatrical,” you will not want to miss this opportunity to see Atlanta Ballet bring Chanel’s glamorous yet turbulent story to life.

Essential Theatre has given Georgia playwrights a voice for over 20 years, producing 40+ World Premieres and helping launch the careers of nation-wide successes like Lauren Gunderson and Topher Payne. The 2023 Essential Play Festival features two world premieres: Matthew Hoffman’s THE MANUSCRIPT, a compelling psychological drama about what we owe to those we’ve lost, recipient of the 2023 Essential Theatre Playwriting Award, and the co-Winner of the 2020 Playwriting Award; THE WISHING PLACE by Beverly Austin, a poetic drama about two families in 1960s rural Georgia, one black and one white, trying to find their path and keep their dreams alive. The Festival runs August 11-September 3 at 7Stages Theatre. Performance schedule and other details at www.EssentialTheatre.com.
