ARTISTRY OF FINE ARTIST VICKIE JOHNSON VJOHNSON PERCEPTIONS
rt is a powerful tool by which we impact the lives of others. This carries a great responsibility. I try to make every stroke that I create a present to the viewer—an expression of what I see and feel. It is a fulfilling connection when someone identifies with my perceptions and desires a piece of my expression as a part of their life. My relationship with art began with the mountains, trees, and brooks of Tennessee. Through this landscape I saw colors and shapes through a very textural view, capturing the “feel” of what I experienced as much as the color and emotion of the moment. I have since lived in many places, affording me an opportunity to experience the “feel” of the land and cityscapes of Central America, Europe, and North America through my painting. Since living in Atlanta, Georgia, I have been intrigued with its Birds of Paradise unique personality, and have painted many scenes from the color and texture I have viewed, both day and night. Cities have their own “energy”—a personality of their own, including all the elements I love—people, landscape, architecture, movement, and lines. I am a very “linear” person, as evidenced through my compositions. I see connections between everything I view—lines indicating edges, direction, unity, the flow of texture —they all represent continuity and a feel of life and energy. Teaching art, both in the public schools and privately, affords me the ability to travel during my summers in search of sights yet unseen and beauty yet unpainted. As an award winning artist and teacher I have come to understand the tremendous impact that an artist can make on the lives of people, both young and old. I choose to think of my art as a gift that comes with the responsibility to create something that pleases God, myself and others. A gift unused is a gift wasted. CREATIVE PROCESS:
ATLANTA ART LIVES HERE CELEBRATES THE REGION’S VIBRANT CULTURAL MILIEU
By Holley Calmes
“W
e want people to realize that they don’t need to travel across the country to experience high caliber performances and exhibitions,” says Atlanta PlanIt’s Operations Manager Kimberly Harbrecht. “One of the main messages we have been telling the community is that ‘You are where the art is!” “Atlanta Art Lives Here” is the energetic public awareness campaign that is celebrating its second year. It is a collaborative vehicle informing citizens of the Atlanta region that all types of fine arts are right here at home, reaching out to entertain, enlighten and educate them. 25 individual arts organizations have signed on for another year’s campaign, finding strength and encouragement in unity. “We realized that we could have a greater impact by pulling together all of our resources as one,” Ms. Harbrecht continues. “Atlanta PlanIt organized the campaign and leads the group’s efforts, which are chosen by the participating organizations.” Housed in the PBS complex with WABE-FM and TV channel PBA30, AtlantaPlanit has become a major resource for arts information in Atlanta. “Atlanta Art Lives Here” is perfectly placed for visibility and support. Most Atlantans probably aren’t aware the sizeable impact that the arts have on the area. “The ten county Metro Atlanta region is home to 15,326 arts-related businesses that employ 62,310 people,” states Ms. Harbrecht. “The arts generated $300 million in direct economic activity in 2010. In 2011, Governor

Deal signed legislation moving the Georgia Council for the Arts from the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget to the Georgia Department of Economic Development. This clearly shows that people are beginning to realize how much of an impact the arts make, and that tourism and the arts are closely related.” Although the economy has not helped the status of financial support, the banding together of individual organizations has definitely helped many participants. Ms. Harbrecht explains, “We have a number of arts organizations participating this year who dedicated a significant amount of their marketing budget to this campaign. These groups might not be able to afford some of the marketing tools on their own, such as digital billboards and print ads, but this campaign has offered them this opportunity, and they are getting a better ‘bang for their buck’ by pooling resources. This campaign reflects how the industry can work well together.” Funding for the arts is of concern to all. “Funding for the arts is something that everyone involved in this campaign is concerned about. Support for the arts goes beyond just a specific performance or exhibit. It reaches the local economy and provides jobs.” Hoped-for results for “Atlanta Art Lives Here” are being seen. “This year, we wanted to double our reach for the campaign, and we have greatly surpassed that goal already,” Ms. Harbrecht states. “Initial goals for this campaign were to raise awareness and adoption of all the arts and cultural groups in Metro Atlanta; educate the community of the breadth and impact of the arts; and demonstrate how the industry can work well together. “Now that we have established a strong foundation for the campaign, we are looking forward to an even bigger and better campaign for next year and for the years to come.” “Atlanta ShowGuide is proud to support the ‘Atlanta Art Lives Here” campaign by becoming its official publication and media resource.” For more info go to www.atlantaartliveshere.org

TALES OF POE — CHILLINGLY REALIZED FOR THE PUPPET STAGE
his February, Center for Puppetry Arts is pleased to present Tales of Edgar Allan Poe as part of the 2012-13 New Directions Series for Adults & Teens! In this performance, Poe’s tortured psyche is resurrected among the ruins of a fallen house where mysterious spirits bedevil the dead and it’s always a midnight dreary. Gothic designs, haunting music, and shadowy figures breathe life into Poe’s tapestry of terror, weaving his classics The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Bells, The Black Cat, and The Cask of Amontillado with his lesser known works, Berenice, The Oval Portrait, M.S. Found in a Bottle, and Lenore. These tales are removed from the shelf and chillingly realized on stage, giving life to the dead and leaving your heart pounding. Tales of Edgar Allan Poe is adapted by Bobby Box, in collaboration with Jon Ludwig, and directed by Michael Haverty. Puppeteers Luis Hernandez, Reay Kaplan, and Rudy Roushdi bring Poe’s infamous characters to life using a unique “table-top” puppetry style, in which live actors share the stage with the puppets on a multi-planed set. Music is performed live by Atlanta-based composer and percussionist, Klimchak, who uses unconventional and original instruments such as wine bottles, saws, and didgeridoos, to create a ghostly and tension-filled atmosphere. The show is recommended for ages 12 through adult and offers matinees and evening performances. Before the show, patrons may explore the Museum exhibits featuring beloved Jim Henson puppets such as Kermit the Frog, Cookie Monster, and Big Bird. During evening performances, guests may also stop by our beer/wine cash bar, Fortunato’s Tavern, so they can better get into the spirit of the evening. Valentine’s Day looking dreary? Bittersweet break-up? Is your love life “nevermore?” Or just looking for a different way to honor the day? Come celebrate an unconventional Valentine’s Day at the Center for Puppetry Arts during our “Oh, Poe is Me!” Valentine’s Weekend, February 14th – 17th, 2013 (evening performances only). During this bittersweet weekend, guests may post “broken-heart valentines” for all to see, professing their various emotions for the significant others of their past, present, or future. Whether you are in or out of love, this unique, tongue-in-cheek Valentine’s activity is sure to leave your heart yearning for more! 12

JACQUAY WALLER OF DREAMCATCHER PRODUCTIONS REFLECTING REALITY ON STAGE
D
reamCatcher Productions is a theatre and film company that seeks to inspire, challenge and impact its surroundings by addressing issues that go untouched through various artistic outlets. It is an organization that strives to provide opportunities for others to “Catch their Dreams”. The visionary behind DreamCatcher Productions is Jacquay Waller. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Jacquay believes that “the stage should be a refection of our reality”. In other words, he believes that “the stage should mimic real life”. His training in classical music began at a young age and his acting career began as an adolescent. These talents awarded him vocal and academic scholarships to Tennessee State University (TSU), where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. Upon leaving TSU, Jacquay took his first job in corporate America as rocket scientist for Raytheon Missile Company in Tucson, AZ. Although successful there, he knew that his calling into the ministry could not be ignored and Jacquay enrolled in Candler School of Theology at Emory University. His love for the Arts was re-awakened while attending Emory. In his last year of seminary, Jacquay produced and directed the show “Coming From Where I’m From.” This directorial debut was the catalyst for launching DreamCatcher Productions in Atlanta, Georgia. After obtaining his Master’s of Divinity (M.Div.) from Emory University and his Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Troy University, Jacquay remained compelled to nurture his artistic talents and spiritual goals. He became an accomplished member of AmeriColor Opera Alliance. Some of his performances with them include, “Madame C.J. Walker,” “Porgy and Bess,” “King Solomon” and the play “Unspoken”. He is also the recipient of James A. Hyter award. While honing his skills through avenues such as opera, local film, and stage performances, Jacquay continued to build DreamCatcher Productions. The company serves a conduit for developing and producing fresh content for the stage and screen. Jacquay serves as actor, writer, director and producer for DreamCatcher Productions. He is the creative genius behind the “Black Man-O-logues” series of stage plays. Other titles from DreamCatcher include, “Black Knight”, “The E.N.D.”, “Fading Flowers”, “Squeeze Pleeze”, “Unhappily EverAfter”, “The Wishlist”, “Race Me”, “Bullied”, “Traffik”, “Suspended”, “Gangs & Greeks”, “Smoking Gun”, “FatherHood”, and “Choices.” Jacquay recently established the DreamCatcher Collective; non-profit arts organization designed educate, immerse, and support emerging artists. One of his most popular productions, “the Black Man-O-logues” will run February 9-10, 2013 at 14th Street Playhouse. For more information, please visit www.catchingdreamz.com. 14

CAPITOL CITY OPERA TO PREMIERE NEW WORK BY LOCAL COMPOSER
T
his season Capitol City Opera Company is enjoying the rare opportunity not only to present the world premiere of a new work, but also to champion its mission to elevate local artists in the process. Capitol City Opera will present The Secret Agent, an opera by Atlanta-area composer Curtis Bryant, March 15-17, 2013, at the Conant Performing Arts Center. Based on the 1907 novel by Joseph Conrad, The Secret Agent is full of themes that resonate with modern audiences today: anarchy, conspiracy, terrorism, betrayal, and murder. “Set in 1930s London, the opera will have a gritty, atmospheric feel to enhance the turbulent action on stage and the urgent, neoclassical orchestration,” said company Artistic Director Michael Nutter. “Audiences can expect many tension-building twists in the tale leading to the dramatic final scene.” The opera will be performed with full orchestral accompaniment. Artistic Director Michael Nutter is assembling a cast of local operatic talent, including veterans and rising stars, for principal roles including baritone Wade Thomas as Verloc, tenor Keith Lee as Vladimir, and countertenor Chase Davidson as Stevie. Catherine Giel is Music Director and Michael Giel is Conductor. Curtis Bryant has composed extensively for choirs, film and television, and his first opera, Zabette, was presented at Atlanta’s Rialto theatre in 1999. To create The Secret Agent, Bryant collaborated with New York forensic psychiatrist Allen Reichman. A long time opera lover, Reichman had nearly finished work on a libretto adaptation of The Secret Agent when he began his search for composers. He selected Bryant from a list of composers of recent operas who had submitted works to the New York City Opera’s Vox Reading Sessions. In the stack of scores was Zabette. Bryant recalls, “An email led to a several more exchanges and finally a phone call.” Their new collaboration was underway. “The Secret Agent is the perfect story for an opera,” said Reichman. “After all, it has an accidental death, a maternal obsession, a murder with a pointed weapon, a betrayal, and a death by suicide.” 16
