“I am never a stranger.”

y work is along two fields: theatrical photography and portraits. My techniques combine intense control of studio lighting with Photoshop based compositing techniques. With theatrical photography I’m given creative wings to dream up images as big as my imagination (and available props and budget) will allow. I love an elaborate production - fog machines, horses, a hippie village, snow machines, buckets of blood…ah, it’s a spectacle of grandiose proportion. But I also know that the primary asset of a successful photo is eliciting an authentic moment of emotion from my subjects. That’s the real magic. Actors, oddly enough, aren’t always comfortable having their photo taken. And often the positions I put them in aren’t the most natural to assume. There is often a request to shed clothing, to let me throw something at them or paint something on them. To shiver in the cold. To sweat in the heat. To cry. To R&J at Fabrefaction Theatre; scream. To let Shakespeare’s Photo by BreeAnne Clowdus go. These are never easy things for people to do with a stranger so I don’t ever let myself be one. I am NEVER a stranger. As Bruce Gilden said, “I love the people I photograph. I’ve never met most of them, yet through my images I live with them.” And boy do I love to shack up. It helps that I have a fully stocked bar in my studio. I’ve been known to ply nervous subjects with a tequila shot or two. But libation or not, by the time we are 10 minutes into a shoot, I usually have a good angle on the person in front of me and what I need to do to get them to relax, to open up and to become REAL for me. I call it the Pinocchio Effect. Almost everyone shows up made out of wood. It’s my job to sprinkle a little fairy dust and let them know it’s ok to be real. In fact, it is required. And that’s the magic. It’s not my lights or my camera. It’s not Photoshop or expensive lenses. These are not the things of great photographs. As Eisenstaedt said, “It is more important to click with people than to click the shutter.” I could not agree more. PINCH ’N OUCH THEATRE OFFERS YOUTHFUL ENTHUSIASM AND EDGY FARE By Holley Calmes “Edgy” is the best word to describe Pinch ‘N Ouch Theatre, a youthful group of dedicated actors shaking up the Atanta theatre scene since 2010. The unusual name is based on a quote from the legendary acting teacher Sanford Meisner, who guided students to act truthfully. Founded and led by Grant McGowen, this troop of youthful artists lives up to Meisner’s standards, earning them the title of “The Hippest Theatre Company in Atlanta” from “Backstage Beat” magazine. “Pinch ‘n’ Ouch Theatre produces exciting new plays that live on the edge,” says McGowen. “It’s a great place to bring someone who likes R-rated independent films or HBO series shows. We also offer some incredible adult classes for serious artists of all levels.” One such play is “Wall Street Wedding,” written by McGowen, which will be running from February 6 to March 1, 2014 at the group’s theatre located at 1085 Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta. “Wall Street Wedding is a satirical comedy about relationships on Wall Street just after the stock market crash of 2008,” McGowen explains. There are a handful of funny characters, a single woman who can’t seem to find a date to save her life, a bride-to-be who wants to rediscover her identify, a newlywed stockbroker who can’t get a break, and a loud mouthed divorcee who says just about everything he feels.” A writer who also acts in his own plays is a fairly unusual circumstance. “It’s really fun performing in something you’ve written, especially in the play ‘Wall Street Wedding’ because it’s funny, sexy, and I get to work with some amazing people. Every now and then I forget I am the writer and I think ‘wow, this line really feels like something I’d say!’” Teaching the craft of acting is another passion for McGowen. “First and foremost, I really try to encourage artists to create. More actors should write for themselves and others. That way they wouldn’t have to sit and wait in an audition room. Secondly, I really strive to enhance the power of the artist’s imagination, and that takes a lot of hard work and practice!” Acting classes are also a part of the Pinch ‘N Ouch experience. 6

n the newest work by the Pulitzer Prize winning author of American Buffalo and GlenGarry Glen Ross, Mamet leaves nothing unsaid in this no-holdsbarred suspense story that the Chicago Tribune dubbed “intellectually salacious.” Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company is thrilled to be presenting the Atlanta premiere featuring Atlanta’s own Andrew Benator in the role of Jack, originated on Broadway by James Spader. Here’s a quick Q&A with Andrew:

us). To date what has been your favorite role to play? A: My favorite role that I’ve played in Atlanta is Max in “Becky Shaw” at Actor’s Express. He was funny, smart, acerbic, fiercely protective of his family, and sometimes behaved like an absolute jerk. He was a blast to play. A: It’s all in the title: Jack’s relationships with Henry, with Susan, with the accuser and accused, and with the nature of the allegation. “FTC” NOW STANDS FOR FABREFACTION THEATRE CONSERVATORY SHAKESPEARE’S R&J; Photo by BreeAnne Clowdus

“G

et ready for the next level,” says Christina Hoff, Founding Artistic Director of Fabrefaction Theatre Company (FTC). Their mission: cultivate the next generation of theater patrons through diverse professional seasons and elite performancebased training programs for elementary-college students. After four seasons of tremendous growth and extraordinary critical acclaim for productions including Sweeney Todd, Titanic, Assassins, and Urinetown, the West Midtown non-profit is excited to announce groundbreaking plans to revolutionize FTC! In 2014 FTC will become Fabrefaction Theatre Conservatory. Seasons will include four productions that combine top professional theater artists with FTC’s conservatory students. Students cast will receive a full semester of dedicated “triple threat” conservatory classes and more! This will allow FTC to infinitely expand their distinct philosophy of “performance based” training. FTC’s summer series will continue to be dedicated to intensive 2-week student productions. The Conservatory will launch this spring with productions of Shakespeare’s R&J and Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka the Musical. On Valentine’s Day, FTC will open Joe

Calarco’s Shakespeare’s R&J. Set in an all-male Catholic prep school where Shakespeare is forbidden; four students begin reading the banned text. Perceptions and understanding are turned upside down as the fun of play-acting turns serious and the words and meanings begin to hit home as universal truths emerge. Featuring a dynamic cast with FTC student understudies, Director Brian Clowdus describes R&J as, “a groundbreaking adaptation that gets to the heart of Romeo and Juliet. With four powerhouse actors playing every role embrace the angst, lust, and forbidden circumstances of the story. This is NOT your Grandmother’s Romeo and Juliet!” Shakespeare’s R&J will run Thursdays-Sundays February 13th(preview)-May 2nd. In April FTC will fully realize their new structure with a scrumdidilyumptions production of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newly that is sure to delight everyone’s sweet tooth. This musical adaptation features a new score and favorite songs from the classic film. FTC’s production will star 2013 Suzi Bass Winner Craig Waldrip as Willy Wonka. he Atlanta Opera’s 2013-14 season opened this October with murder, mayhem and “a production to make Atlanta proud” (examiner.com) in Puccini’s dark thriller, Tosca. he lovable story of a dweeb, his crush, and his man-eating plant makes its way to Marietta this January as The Strand Theatre kicks off its 2014 season with LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. A down-and-out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Audrey IIâ&#x20AC;? grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination! One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time, this affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies has become a household name, thanks to the highly successful film version starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, and Steve Martin. erenbe Playhouse was just an idea six years ago, but in the days and months since it has catapulted its way to the upper echelon of the Atlanta theatre community. Audiences have stampeded to the bucolic setting of Serenbe to experience a headless horseman, a rabbit that came to life, hippies and countless other memorable characters. Now, as the playhouse prepares to enter its fifth season of shows, excited theatre lovers can expect to journey over the rainbow, back home and to the American frontier. During the 2013 season, Serenbe Playhouse received unparalleled praise for the three productions that made up the “Season of Change.” Caroline Huftalen from Busking at the Seems said “You want to be the top dog in Atlanta theatre? You have one hell of a man to beat then. Brian Clowdus has taken Atlanta theatre out of the city, off the stage, and into a brand new world.” Bert Osborne and Wendell Brock, both from The Atlanta Journal Constitution called A Walk in the Woods “Ingenious” (Osborne) and said HAIR was “A Triumph!” (Brock.)

For the first time in the playhouse’s history, a full-scale production was presented in the autumn. The Sleepy Hollow Experience was staged in the horse stables at Serenbe, and broke all previous box office records for the company. Due to the mind-blowing success of the production, Serenbe Playhouse will make the show a Halloween holiday tradition and audiences can expect the Headless Horseman to return in 2014! The 2014 season has been titled “A Season of Journeys,” and audiences are sure to be transported to new levels of elation with everything that Serenbe Playhouse has in store. Beginning on May 30th a childhood classic will take a heartwarming and exciting trip over the rainbow when a new adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Following close on it’s heals, opening on June 12th, will be the World Premiere of Ten Mile Lake by Tira Palmquist.
