Robot Romance Nufonia Must Fall Highlights Georgia Tech’s Art and Technology Programming
A
rts@Tech presents Kid Koala’s magical, multi-disciplinary and theatrical adaptation of his graphic novel, Nufonia Must Fall, performing February 11-12 at the Ferst Center for the Arts. Striking in its presentation style and indicative of the unique and bold programming found at Georgia Tech, the charming story centers around a robot on the verge of obsolescence who falls in love with a customer. Directed by K.K. Barrett, Oscar-nominated for Her, this adaptation is told through a live silent film with live performance, live editing, live sound effects, and live music played by the Afiara Quartet and Kid Koala. The story unfolds via real-time filming of more than a dozen miniature stages and a cast of puppets, so that the audience is watching an animated film, and simultaneously sees puppets being filmed and projected in real time. Kid Koala is a world-renowned scratch DJ, music producer, and award-winning graphic novelist based in Montreal. Nufonia features both visual and musical humor — two of Kid Koala’s trademarks. “From the little robot sporting
headphones to the live music and the amazing work of the puppeteers. Nufonia is a multi-media performance unlike anything I’ve seen,” says Madison Cario, director of Georgia Tech’s Office of the Arts. Nufonia Must Fall is one of three offerings at the Ferst Center this spring that exemplifies the art and technology performances that Cario selects in programming the Arts@Tech season. The work on stage is of the highest artistry, and its creativity is at the intersection of science, engineering, art and design. Coming up March 10 is guitarist Kaki King, whose work takes storytelling by guitar to a new level. The groundbreaking performance uses projection mapping to present the guitar in a creation myth where visions of genesis and death are cast onto an Ovation acoustic guitar. Also this spring, An Evening of SEAD Artists on April 21 will feature the dance performance Time to Compile, a piece by roboticist Amy LaViers and choreographer/ technologist Catie Cuan. The Georgia Tech Women in Music Technology will also perform new works in electronic music. For information on all Arts@Tech performances this spring see www.arts.gatech.edu.

CREATIVE PROCESS:
Creating ‘A New Southern Theatrical Canon’ Is A Priority For Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s Rick Dildine By Holley Calmes
“I
will always be a Southern Guy,” states Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s new Artistic Director Rick Dildine. Born in Arkansas, the move to ASF’s Montgomery, Alabama home posed no psychological trauma for Dildine. He recently left another southern theatrical institution, St. Louis, Missouri’s Shakespeare Festival, with a fist full of awards for his leadership. Dildine arrived in Alabama in August. “This is the easiest transition I’ve ever made,” he explains. “The people are warm, kind, and so welcoming. And Montgomery seems to be a city on the verge of taking off, a city rich in history and ripe for storytelling.” Dildine’s era saw the St. Louis Festival’s attendance grow by 55% and revenues by 38%. A youthful, diverse audience and 300+ volunteers are further hallmarks of his Missouri accomplishments. Dildine expects Alabama to be as fertile a theatrical field to plow, especially in the artistic development aspect of the job. “The role of the Artistic Director is to listen to the community,” he says. “And especially in the South, relationships are everything. Since arriving, I’ve been out meeting people and getting to know my new home. The conversations and impulses of the city are leading me. We want ASF to be a part of this community in an authentic way.” Although the works of Shakespeare are the cornerstone of the organization, Dildine sees a future pairing these classics with developing “a new Southern Theatrical canon.” ASF’s Southern Writer’s Project will be a significant factor in this process. “The Southern Writer’s Project is a tremendous initiative and will play a key role in developing new work and attracting top-tier Southern playwrights to ASF. It’s important that we are not only producing excellent Shakespeare productions but contributing something new to the world,” he says. “I am in the process right now of bringing together a great group of Southern playwrights to join me in envisioning the next phase of this ‘new play program.’ The country is eager to hear about our region, especially the stories that can fall through the cracks.” In relation to this initiative he states, “We have something big in the works that we hope to announce in the Spring.” “Overall, my goals are to always be listening, to do authentic work, to make our stories relevant for today’s audiences, and to make sure we are portraying the complexity and diversity of life onstage. I want everyone to know they have a place here.”

Alliance Theatre will Produce Native Guard at Atlanta History Center
January LaVoy in the Alliance Theatre’s world premiere production of Native Guard. Photo by Greg Mooney.
T
he Alliance Theatre has announced its upcoming staging of NATIVE GUARD, the Pulitzer Prize-winning collection of poetry by former U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey. In NATIVE GUARD, Trethewey examines national memorials to the Civil War, how we remember history and who tells its story, and how that passed-on history affects our beliefs today. Directed by Alliance Artistic Director Susan V. Booth, NATIVE GUARD explores themes of history, identity, memory, and loss. NATIVE GUARD will be staged at the Atlanta History Center just steps away from its extraordinary collection of Civil War artifacts, January 13 – February 4, 2018. First adapted for the stage by the Alliance in 2014 to sold-out audiences, NATIVE GUARD was described as “an invigorating theatrical experience” and “thought-provoking” by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and as “a harrowing, beautiful and elegiac journey” by Atlanta INtown. “Natasha Tretheway’s breathtaking NATIVE GUARD has become even more relevant today than when the Alliance premiered it four years ago,” said Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director.
“Questions of how we remember and memorialize our national history have moved from the classroom to the street, from textbook to headline.” “The Atlanta History Center believes deeply that everyone has a story to tell, and that history belongs to everyone. So we saw a natural match when asked to partner with the Alliance Theatre in staging Natasha Trethewey’s NATIVE GUARD inside our Museum,” said Sheffield Hale, President and CEO, Atlanta History Center. “In combining the Civil War story of the Louisiana Native Guards, one of the Union’s first official black units, with her own story of growing up as the daughter of a then-illegal mixed-race marriage in 1960s Mississippi, Natasha wove a new narrative that brought the past alive in the present. We strive to do that every day at the Atlanta History Center. We hope the experience of combining Trethewey’s work and the talent of the actors in NATIVE GUARD with the powerful objects and stories in our Turning Point: The American Civil War exhibition will connect audiences with history in a vital new way.” Tickets and info are available at www. alliancetheatre.org/nativeguard

The Michael O’Neal Singers: Song for Everyone
T
he Michael O’Neal Singers organization (MOS), based in Roswell, is now midway through its 29th concert season. The 150-member symphonic chorus, known for its agility and variety, will perform A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms in January, and partner with the Burke Connolly Academy of Irish Dance for a Saint Patrick’s Day celebration, Return to Old Ireland, in March. In May, MOS collaborates with Georgia Philharmonic to present the Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony. Since its inception in 1989, MOS has provided a unique opportunity to the north metropolitan Atlanta community to experience musical presentations of engaging variety and artistic excellence. Recent concerts have included Beethoven and Bruckner masterworks, Broadway hits, favorites from the Great American songbook, opera choruses, bluegrass and gospel music, and Beatles ballads. Dr. Michael O’Neal, Founder and Artistic Director, guides the organization with his vision for attaining the highest standards of choral excellence. O’Neal’s work with Robert Shaw evoked the following from the late Mr. Shaw: “Michael…always
manages to see that the music comes first.” Committed to musical outreach, The Michael O’Neal Singers organization has produced a CD entitled MOS Remembers, and distributes this recording at no charge to those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or age-related dementia. MOS also live-streams many of its concerts in order that those who are no longer able to attend live choral performances may still experience the power and healing that choral song provides. MOS recognizes the power vocal music has to connect and heal, and so offers choral opportunities to the community at large by hosting an annual December Messiah Sing-Along and a non-auditioned Summer Singers program. In addition, MOS provides opportunities at many of its concerts for the audience to become part of the music-making and sing along with the chorus. The full chorus now has 18 recordings to its credit, including recent releases Amazing Grace: Bluegrass, Spirituals and Gospel and Christmas Through the Ages. Visit MOS on the web at www. mosingers.com or call 770.594.7974 to learn more about these CDs, the MOS Remembers project, and the MOS 2018 season.

Theatrical Outfit Brings Two Diverse Productions to the Stage this Winter
Alliance Theatre Actress Terry Burrell, 2016 SUZI award winning production ETHEL, Photo by Greg Mooney
T
his winter, Theatrical Outfit proudly continues its captivating 20172018 Season of Character with two unique plays that take visitors back to the 1950s and explore extraordinary individuals living extraordinary lives during a time of great social evolution in our country. Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill (January 11 – February 4) stars Atlanta (and Broadway) favorite Terry Burrell (The Alliance Theatre’s Ethel) and is directed by Eric J. Little (The Outfit’s Thurgood). Lady Day invites audiences into a south Philadelphia bar in 1959 to experience one of legend Billie Holiday’s last solo performances, given four months before her death at the age of 44. Full of heartmelting numbers like “God Bless the Child,” “Strange Fruit,” and “What a Little Moonlight Can Do,” Billie shares with us her loves and losses in this award-winning musical fresh from its recent Broadway and London revivals. Pull up a chair and grab a drink for an intimate and epic evening with one of the greatest jazz and blues vocalists of all time — a riveting portrait of the life, the icon, and the unforgettable music that is “Lady Day.”
Next, travel back to Washington, D.C. in 1950 as Senator Joseph McCarthy’s Red Scare “witch hunts” loom large and two State Department coworkers receive orders to expose “moral turpitude” within the government. But, loyal employees Bob and Norma are both gay and have married each other’s partners, Millie and Jim, in a Perfect Arrangement (February 22 – March 18) of domestic, mid-century bliss separated, literally, by a shared closet door. Inspired by true stories of social survival chronicled in the book and documentary film The Lavender Scare, this bubbly cocktail party-meets-TV sitcom simmers into poignant realism as the four mates face scandal and a future more gray than Technicolor. Theatrical Outfit presents the Atlanta professional return of this runaway hit play and 2014 American Critics Association Osborn Prize winner by prolific local playwright-actor-director Topher Payne. Adam Koplan (The Outfit’s The Dancing Handkerchief) directs an all-star local cast featuring Ann Marie Gideon, Clifton Guterman, Joe Knezevich, and Courtney Patterson as the four mates. Outfront Theatre Explores The Mystery of Love and Sex Charlotte and Jonny definitely do love each other. But not that way. Or maybe that way. They’re in college and have been close friends since they were nine. They might be in love. They might be getting married. Or they might not. Also, Charlotte wonders if she might be gay. Or maybe bisexual. As does Jonny. Deeply insightful and very funny, The Mystery of Love and Sex captures both the aimless yet headstrong swagger of the twentysomethings, as well as the guarded, practiced veneer of their parents. They’ll all find out eventually that the path forward is not always the one right in front of you. Outfronttheatre. com
