True Colors’ Artistic Director Jamil Jude “Strives to Thrive” Championing a Season Filled with Accomplished Women
“I
By Holley Calmes
n college, I fell in love with the power of theatre to create conversation and increase empathy,” explains Jamil Jude as he enters his first year as Artistic Director of Atlanta’s prestigious True Colors Theatre Company. Women, particularly Black women, are rarely the topic of plays, and the contributions of female production artists are seldom mentioned. Jude has therefore dedicated the 2019-2020 Season to theatre that puts Black women in the spotlight, both onstage and backstage. “The American Theatre does a poor job of representing Black women and their stories,” Jude says. “Less than 4% of produced plays are written by Black women and an even smaller number of Black women are represented as directors, designers, and backstage crew.” Looking forward to 2020, Jude says, “We will feature Black women as directors, designers, cast and backstage crew. Our production of Marie and Rosetta includes a cast, creative and support team of all Black women.” The upcoming production of School Girls; or The African Mean Girls’ Play will be performed February 11th through March 8th. This work explores the challenges of imposing beauty standards on women. “I fell in love with the comedic writing of playwright Jocelyn Bioh,” says Jude. “Her wit is impeccable, and she is able to make an old idea, (mean popular high school
Artistic Director, Jamil Jude, Photo by Lelund Durond Thompson girls,) feel altogether new.” Marie and Rosetta, performed June 16th-July 12th,” will explore unsung heroes in Black history. “Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a rock-androll legend that I knew very little about until I read this play,” Jude explains. “I hate that her story isn’t more widely known, and I’m happy that True Color’s audiences will get to learn more about her. The music from this show will rock the house every night!” Jude does proudly cite the contributions of his True Colors Theatre Managing Director, Chandra Stephens Albright, one the few Black women leading a theatre locally or nationally. Themes for Jude’s second season in 2020-2021, although not completely set, are brewing in his mind. “I am considering the concepts of Joy and Pain,” he says. “The dual masked faces traditionally associated with theatre suggests that these things are opposites and one and the same. I’m thinking of a few shows that will address these ideas and can’t wait to announce the season in April!”

oin the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) this winter season for a flurry of musical thrills. From high-flying Cirque acts to David Bowie rock tributes to rhythms of Latin America to iconic film scores from a galaxy far...far... away, there’s plenty happening at Atlanta Symphony Hall. On December 17 & 18, Cirque de la Symphonie brings the magic of cirque to the music hall. The show features an elegant fusion of cirque and orchestra, adapting the stunning performances of cirque artists with the majesty of the ASO. The program showcases many of the best cirque artists in the world, thrilling the audience with aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers, balancers, and strongmen. Experience a symphonic musical odyssey of David Bowie’s music with Conductor Brent Havens, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and a full rock band on Friday, January 24! Broadway star Tony Vincent and Windborne Music’s exceptional musicians combine with a full orchestra to present Bowie’s hits including
“Space Oddity,” “Changes,” “Under Pressure,” “Heroes,” and more, performed as you’ve never heard it before. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in Concert with ASO will take over Symphony Hall on March 13 & 14, 2020! As part of the Movies in Concert series, the Star Wars: Return of the Jedi will be displayed on a 40-ft screen while the Atlanta Symphony performs John Williams’ iconic film score live! Rise to your feet and dance to the rhythms of Latin America in Presto Mambo on Sunday, March 22! Produced by the Platypus Theatre, the family program will take an unexpected turn when Max — an energetic but impulsive young boy — makes his way onto the stage to “help” the orchestra. Soon Max is on a whirlwind adventure that takes him from the concert hall to the vibrant lands of Latin American culture where — with the help of his new friend, Mambo the dog, the orchestra and the audience — Max learns the magic of Latin rhythms and how to “dance” with the music! Tickets and information regarding these shows and more at Atlanta Symphony Hall can be found at ASO.org.

he Alliance Theatre will present the American premiere of the AwardWinning new musical, Maybe Happy Ending on the newly renovated Coca-Cola Stage, January 21 through February 16, 2020. The production is Directed by two-time Tony Award Nominee, Michael Arden (Once on this Island, Spring Awakening) with Book, Music, and Lyrics by Will Aronson & Hue Park. Looking past our era of technology-driven detachment, this award-winning musical celebrates a magical and bittersweet reawakening to the things that make us human. Written in two versions — Englishlanguage and Korean-language — the Korean-language version had its world premiere in Seoul, Korea, in 2016, where it won six Korean Musical Awards including the awards for Best Book, Lyrics, and Music. The English-language version was awarded the 2017 Richard Rodgers Production Award and will have its American Premiere at the Alliance Theatre. Set in the not-too-distant future in Seoul, Korea, two obsolete helper-bots are living an isolated existence in a robots-only housing complex on the edge of the city.
Oliver is waiting expectantly for his formerowner to come looking for him, and Claire is just… waiting. When the two discover each other in the hall, they have a surprising connection that challenges what they believe is possible for themselves, relationships, and love. Maybe Happy Ending features Kenny Tran (Regional: Vietgone, Men with Money) as Oliver, Cathy Ang (Regional: We are the Tigers, KPOP) as Claire, Dez Duron (TV: The Voice) as Gil Brentley, and John Haggerty (Regional: You Never Touched the Dirt, Henry VI) as Man. ur second season kicked off with the practically-perfect musical version of the beloved 1964 Disney film Mary Poppins. The phenomenally talented cast performed to sold-out shows for two weeks and critics across Atlanta praised the performances. Next up this December is Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn tells the story of a song-anddance man who leaves the bright lights of show business to settle down on a Connecticut farmhouse. When he meets a spirited schoolteacher with talent to spare, they turn the farmhouse into a fabulous inn with dazzling performances to celebrate each holiday. Based on the classic film, this joyous musical features laugh-out-loud comedy and a parade of hit Irving Berlin songs! A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder was the surprise hit of the 2014 Broadway season and the winner of four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. This murderous and hilarious story about the heir to a family fortune who sets out to speed up the line of succession by using a great deal of charm — and a dash of murder — is filled with unforgettable music and non-stop laughs. Sister Act is the feel-good musical-comedy smash based on the hit 1992 film that had

Broadway and London audiences jumping to their feet! Featuring original music by Tony winner and eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, this uplifting musical was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Musical. Lovingly ripped-off from the classic 1975 comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python’s Spamalot retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they are charged by God on a quest to find the elusive Holy Grail. This 2005 Tony Award winner for Best Musical features a memorable array of musical numbers and gut-busting laughs.

A True Must-See: Shen Yun at Cobb Energy Centre
I
f you can make it to only one show a year, let Shen Yun be your show of choice. And for people who live in Metro Atlanta, the company’s 10-day run at Cobb Energy Centre in January is the best time to see this one-of-a-kind performance. Shen Yun Performing Arts is a nonprofit company based in New York. It was formed in 2006 by artists from around the world who came together with a mission — to show the world what Chinese culture once was. In China, this traditional culture has been devastated over 70 years of communist rule. In fact, Shen Yun is not even allowed to perform in China today. But worldwide the company gave 500 performances in 150 cities last season alone. Across the United States its performances were regularly soldout. With breathtaking dances, gorgeous costumes, live orchestra, and dynamic backdrops, this is a show brimming with themes of courage, hope, and triumph of good over evil. Each year, the company debuts a new lineup of original music and choreography, ranging from classical Chinese dance to traditional ethnic and folk dance styles to
theatrical depictions of beloved stories. At the performance’s core is classical Chinese dance. This is the same richly expressive art form that had once been performed in front of emperors in palace halls. Today, it has evolved into one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world. Shen Yun features hundreds of handmade costumes — showcasing apparel from China’s 5,000 years of history. Their exquisite colors blend seamlessly with the animated backdrops, instantly transporting the audience to another world. The animation also contains a few surprises, but those are best left for the performance. At the beginning of 2020 when air often feels quite chilly in Metro Atlanta, Shen Yun’s warm embrace of this ancient heritage is a great way to welcome in the New Year, and is a highly accessible, enlightening, and entertaining experience. Shen Yun will be performing at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre January 3-12, 2020. For tickets and more information, visit https://www.shenyun.com/atlanta.

Season 38 - Memories, Passion, and Family Atlanta Dance Theatre is excited to stage our 38th season. We kick off our performances with visions of sugar plums in the timeless tradition of The Nutcracker, artfully choreographed by Shelley Grames. The spring brings an exciting performance of Aladdin, choreographed by Kassandra Taylor Newberry. Our remarkable
group of ADT dancers, complimented by the high caliber, professional guest artists, Jonah Hooper, Nick Hagelin, Lonnie Davis, Robert Chabot, Erick Jackson, Eric Nash and Katherine Ricardo, never cease to amaze us with their collective athleticism and artistry.
Each new season brings creative opportunities and unique memories. Whether it’s a first performance as a little gingerbread in The Nutcracker, to a final, feature role in a spring production, there is great anticipation. For parents, there is such joy and pride in seeing our dancers’ dramatic performances as growing artists and witnessing the amazing people they’re becoming. We all know it happens with countless hours of rehearsals and dedication that build discipline, respect, patience and teamwork, all under the stewardship of our Artistic Director, Shelley Grames and her team. In addition to these seasonal performances, ADT dancers perform at the RDA/Southeast Ballet Festival. The many performances and training are part of ADT’s well-rounded program that also encourages giving back through volunteerism to the community off stage. These young artists learn how to succeed in their daily commitments and balance their lives inside and outside the studio.
They say, “…it takes a village,” but we think, “…it takes a family,” our ADT family! From our passionate Artistic Director, staff, and costume makers to our make-up artists, props crew and everyone in between, each
performance is a wellchoreographed production on stage and off. These skills, experiences and opportunities serve our dancers well wherever life takes them. They’re forever part of our “ADT family” as we happily recall the many seasons we’ve watched our impressive artists excel. We hope you enjoy our 2019-2020 season. We welcome new dancers and patrons to be a part of our growing “ADT family”. Follow us online at: https://www. facebook.com/AtlantaDanceTheatre/

Kennesaw State Department of Dance Receives Gift from Yunek Family Donation will support annual choreographic residency at KSU Dance
K
ennesaw State University has received a $541,000 donation to the Department of Dance in the College of the Arts. The Eleo Pomare–Glenn Conner Dance Endowment will be used to begin the KSU Choreographic Residency to bring two nationally curated choreographers to the Department of Dance each summer to create two world premieres. The annual choreographic residency honors the late benefactors who were luminaries of the dance world. The gift from Jay and Debra Yunek, the Eleo Pomare–Glenn Conner Dance Endowment, honors their late uncle, Glenn Conner, and his partner and choreographer Eleo Pomare. Pomare, who passed away in 2008, was known for developing innovative choreography that deals with social inequality and injustice. The funds will be used to promote and preserve Pomare’s legacy through the cultivation of new choreographic voices. Ivan Pulinkala, dean of the College of the Arts and the founder of KSU Dance, announced the major gift at the opening of the student dance performance “Slang” at the KSU Dance Theater in Marietta. “We are grateful to the Yunek’s for
their generous donation to KSU Dance in honor of Glenn and Eleo,” said Pulinkala. “The KSU Choreographic Residency will help support the careers of emerging choreographers nationally and give our students a unique experience of collaborating with professionals in the field.” Combined with a previous gift received in 2018, the Yunek family has given almost $1 million to support dance at KSU. KSU Dance will create a summer course in which students accepted by audition will have the opportunity to work with one of the nationally curated choreographers. The Department of Dance began at KSU in 2005 and has flourished into the largest collegiate dance program in Georgia. Every year, over 100 students competitively audition to be dance majors at KSU. KSU Dance has received regional and national attention at the American College Dance Association and been invited five times to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The Dance Theater on the Marietta Campus, the performance home of KSU Dance, is Atlanta’s first theater designed specifically for dance.

Theatre Buford Brings Comedy to the Stage this Year
Capitol City Opera Presents Roméo et Juliette
Theatre Buford brings Oscar Wilde’s most renowned comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest, to the Sylvia Beard Theatre stage February 14th through March 1st. The tale of two bachelors who create alter egos to escape their tiresome lives, The Importance of Being Earnest ridicules Victorian sensibilities with some of the best loved characters to be found on the modern stage. Tickets are available at www.bufordcommunitycenter. com or by calling the box office at 770-9042740.
This spring, Capitol City Opera will present Gounod’s five-act opera, Roméo et Juliette, based upon the play by William Shakespeare. Roméo et Juliette tells the story of two rival families, the Capulets and Montagues, consumed with hatred for one another and yet somehow love emerges between two of the youngest members. Love does not triumph in this tale, only tragedy as revenge, murder and misunderstandings lead the lovers to die in each other’s arms. The opera will be set in 14th century Verona and performed in French with English supertitles. March 6-8, 2020 at Conant Performing Arts Center. Tickets at www.ccityopera.org
