We will finish the season with the International hit musical, Mamma Mia!, featuring the songs of Swedish supergroup ABBA. Over 60 million people worldwide have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that make Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show. Featuring such hits songs as “Dancing Queen,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You” and “Waterloo.” Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s modern classic hits Sandy Springs in a colorful and elegant production! The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE: Keep Voices and Hearts ‘In Tune’ during the Pandemic

S

ince its inception more than 30 years ago, The Michael O’Neal Singers organization (MOS), based in Roswell, has provided a unique opportunity to the north metro-Atlanta community to experience musical presentations of engaging variety and artistic excellence. MOS recognizes the power vocal music has to connect and heal, and so offers choral opportunities to the community at large by hosting a non-auditioned Summer Singers program and an annual December Messiah Sing-Along. The COVID-19 situation prevents the 140-voice auditioned MOS chorus from effectively gathering and producing inperson choral events. The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE offers a way for choral singers to keep their voices in shape, learn and safely rehearse choral music with a choral “surround sound,” and visit with other singers in real time. Rehearsals are offered weekly via YouTube and are followed by Zoom social sessions for those persons interested in visiting with other singers. Those MOS ONLINE participants interested in also having a virtual choir experience can choose to participate in an optional ‘virtual audio’ performance. The Winter session of The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE is entitled Choral Classics: Music That Inspires and the YouTube videos will ‘premiere’ each Monday evening at 8 p.m. EST from January

27 – March 8 (they can also be viewed any time after each ‘premiere’ showing). There is no registration fee for participation, although donations are gratefully accepted. Singers may enroll from anywhere; MOS ONLINE currently includes participants from 25 states and eight countries spread over five continents. MOS hosts its 2020 Messiah Sing-Along virtually. In this video broadcast of our 2019 Sing-Along, the MOS chorus and 34-member Kaleidoscope ensemble, chamber orchestra, professional soloists, and Conductor Michael O’Neal will lead the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah, concluding with the famous “Hallelujah” Chorus. Use your own score, or download/print scores we provide, to sing along wherever you are. There is no fee to participate; donations are gratefully accepted. The Sing-Along will premiere at 3 p.m. EST on Sunday, December 20, 2020 on the MOS YouTube Channel. Then, at 4:20 p.m., all are invited to a live Zoom session with Michael and special guests. Visit www.mosingers.com/messiah2020 for information; visit youtube.com/ michaelonealsingers to watch on December 20. Visit MOS on the web at www. mosingers.com or call 770.594.7974 to learn more about being part of The Michael O’Neal Singers ONLINE.

Nature’s Great Pause: The Winter of the Arts will bring New Creativity Atlanta Master Chorale, Director Eric Nelson, Photo by Eric Richards

N

ature has the remarkable ability to survive long winters. Trees go dormant. Spring bulbs remain closed and safe a few inches beneath our feet. True, a few flowers thrive in the cold, but nothing compared to the explosion of colors in the spring and summer. Music and creative arts have the same remarkable ability to survive although our experience of the arts has shifted. While some organizations have been forced to go dormant, others have planted and nurtured more delicate and distanced art through our phones, computers and radios. During this intermission, Atlanta Master Chorale continues sharing our virtual library of performances in addition to presenting new content for our audiences. In 2021, another segment of our Virtual Concert Hall will unfold. The first two broadcasts of Spirited Conversations: Behind the Scores, will feature two Atlanta based “superstars”. Listeners can eavesdrop on live informal conversations revealing a behind the scenes look at the world of composition and performance with international opera mezzo-soprano, Jamie Barton on January 25 at noon and composer, Joel Thompson on March 8 at 7 pm. You are also invited to join us for a virtual Valentine’s Celebration on Friday, February 12 at 7:30 pm as we experience the beautiful emotion of love in the harmonious sound of our choristers’ voices. Visit AtlantaMasterChorale.org/Virtual for more information on upcoming events. This long winter of separation from

what we all love as musicians, performers, artists and audiences may also burst open a new canon of amazing art. Creative minds are working hard and synthesizing this current human experience into new works ranging from depths of sadness to overwhelming joy in imagining when we will be reunited with family and friends and how it will feel to return to live performance once more. With the time we’ve been given to reflect, societal shifts of justice and equity are also centering themselves in the stories that will be told on stages, on canvas, and in song. New harmonies will emerge. Some brand new and some long drowned out voices will come to the forefront. Art will not only survive this pandemic; it will help us through it and rejuvenate us when it is over. Meanwhile, during this period of “artistic winter,” be sure to continue experiencing the art all around you. Allow it to stir the soul and warm the heart until we can share space again.

The Rialto Center for the Arts: Hope in the New Year

ike many organizations in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rialto Center has been closed since last spring and needed new ways to engage audiences. Our initial response to the challenges brought on by COVID-19 was to become a source of hope and support to the community by showcasing local and emerging artists. During Georgia’s shelter in place mandate, the Rialto Center introduced free virtual programming: Feed Your Senses Livestream performances, the Rialto Homegrown Artists Series, Live at the Rialto and Crucial Conversations. Our signature monthly lunch-andlearn series, Feed Your Senses, now features live performances streamed from the Rialto stage to Facebook every third Wednesday at noon. We launched the Rialto Homegrown Artists Series, a variety of short, virtual performances presented by local artists, from their homes or other locations, every other Thursday at noon. We’ve connected with partners in Atlanta and beyond for our Live at the Rialto series, including performances by Russell Gunn and the Royal Krunk Jazz Orkestra, broadcast live from the Rialto for the Blue Note New York, with an expanded recorded version premiering for ELEVATE Atlanta; and Kevin Bales’ Beyond the Neighborhood: The Music of Fred Rogers for the South Carolina Jazz Festival. Crucial Conversations,

hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Douglas Blackmon, is a televised series of civil, nonpartisan discussions focusing on racial equity, reconciliation, and solutions. Crucial Conversations airs monthly, the second Sunday and Wednesday at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., on GPB TV, Xfinity Channel 246 and on Facebook. As a result of our new virtual offerings, the Rialto has reached over 44,000 via Facebook from April to November 2020. Our virtual programs are available for viewing on demand at rialto. gsu.edu on the Rialto Performance Archives. As winter gives way to the new year and renewed hope, we long to welcome audiences back to the Rialto Center for the world-class, live performances we are known for. As we implement measures to ensure the health and safety of our patrons, we stand ready to welcome you to the Rialto. Until then, join us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @RialtoCenter and Keep Hope Alive!

Lawrenceville Performing Arts Center is set to take Center Stage as Expanded Home of Aurora Theatre

Main Theatre, Photo by Stevens & Wilkinson

T

he highly anticipated Lawrenceville Performing Arts Center is set to take center stage in the heart of the city’s Historic Downtown District with construction currently underway! The City of Lawrenceville and Aurora Theatre celebrated the Lawrenceville Performing Arts Center (LPAC) topping out milestone — during which the final structural beam is put in place — with a small gathering in November 2020. The impressive $35-million facility broke ground in June 2019 and is scheduled for completion in summer 2021. Located across the street from the city’s Historic Gwinnett County Courthouse grounds, the new 56,000 square-foot venue will house a state-of-the-art 500-seat mainstage theater; two-story lobby; Cabaret; indoor and outdoor civic spaces; gallery space; and rooms for office and educational programming. The new arts and cultural center — an expansion of the existing Aurora Theatre — will transform downtown and attract visitors, residents, artists and students to the heart of Gwinnett County. The multifaceted and unprecedented partnership between Aurora Theatre and the City of Lawrenceville furthers each organization’s investment in the future of performing

arts and will drive powerful economic development and downtown revitalization. Aurora Theatre is home to the highest level of artistic excellence in the region, serving communities and offering performing arts experiences that nurture a love of theatre in a multigenerational space. Leading the way as a top performing arts non-profit in the state despite industry challenges posed by the 2020 landscape, the regional theater has managed to find new platforms and open-air venues to host meaningful events at a safe distance. Gwinnett County’s only professional theater continues to engage with audiences through alternative programming, including its Our Stage Onscreen performance initiative. Theatergoers can choose their own holiday adventure with a variety of performances at Aurora Theatre! Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol,’ a solo performance starring Anthony Rodriguez, returns to the Aurora Theatre mainstage Dec. 16-23 with reduced capacity and safety measures. ‘This Wonderful Life,’ a one-man stage adaption of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ starring award-winning, Atlanta-based Jeremy Aggers, will steam Dec. 17-Jan. 1.

Tune in to the spring concerts by purchasing a Virtual Membership, which provides extended viewing windows for one month after each premiere and access to the ASO Tech Squad for account set-up and virtual concert viewing assistance. Concerts may also be viewed with pay-per-view access. “In this challenging and uncertain period, I am so grateful that we have been able to find new avenues to continue our commitment to presenting great symphonic music,” said Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Music Director Robert Spano. “We are thrilled to be able to share the talents of these composers and performers, and connect to our listeners, who are as important to musicmaking as the performers themselves.” For more information about Virtual Memberships to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s reimagined season, visit aso.org/memberships

I WOULDN’T BE HERE WITHOUT GRADY. I WAS JUST GOING TO VISIT MY BROTHER. I was coming around I-285 and was involved in a tragic car accident. I had more than 25 broken bones and life-threatening internal injuries. The paramedics got me to Grady and the doctors started working on me. One looked me in the eyes and said “I can fix this.” Thank you, Jesus. I was def initely in the right place. I’m lucky to be alive. I give all that to the grace of God and Grady Hospital.
