Join Schwartz Center’s 20th Anniversary Celebration at Emory

On February 1, 2003, the Donna and Marvin Schwartz Center for Performing Arts opened its doors, providing a focal point for the arts on Emory’s campus and filling a niche in the Atlanta arts scene for a mid-size concert venue to showcase internationally acclaimed classical and jazz artists. Offering a home for practice studios, classrooms, Tharp Rehearsal Hall, a Theater Lab, and a 125-seat Dance Studio, the center’s main attraction is the Emerson Concert Hall. An 825-seat hall with a choral balcony and flexible stage, the concert hall has welcomed performances ranging from a solo recital with pianist Hélène Grimaud to the 100-member New York Philharmonic. In celebration of this year’s milestone, the anniversary season features artists at the pinnacle of classical, jazz, and crossover music: the exquisite violinist AnneSophie Mutter on February 2 — followed by a post-concert celebratory toast; a new song cycle from Schwartz Artist-inResidence Lawrence Brownlee on March 17; and the masterful genre-benders Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain, and Edgar Meyer with flutist Rakesh Chaurasia on April 20.

“Coming together as a community for these world-class artists gives us all the opportunity to connect, to learn, to be inspired, and to be transformed through extraordinary performances,” says Rachael Brightwell, managing director. Other highlights from this season in clude the duo of jazz pianist Fred Hersch  and vocalist esperanza spalding taking the stage on Jan. 19; the West-Eastern Divan Ensemble with violinist Michael Barenboim on March 2; and pianist  Chad Lawson with Judy Kang (violin) and  Seth Parker Woods (cello) on March 25. Also celebrating a 20-year milestone, Director of Jazz Studies Gary Motley presents the Emory Jazz Festival on February 8–10. Motley will mark the special occasion with an all-star lineup of musicians performing and giving master classes during the festival. Featured artists include vibraphonist Warren Wolf, saxophonist Greg Tardy, drummer  Clarence Penn, and bassist Edwin Livingston.

Atlanta Master Chorale Presents Settings of Magnificat

A unique blend of a hymn of praise and a prayer for justice. March 10 and 11, 2023 at 8 p.m.

Atlanta Master Chorale’s March concerts will feature variations on the Magnificat, an ancient liturgical text that is both a hymn of praise and a prayer for justice. The Magnificat is attributed to Mary, mother of Jesus, upon meeting her relative Elizabeth when both were pregnant. It has fascinated composers for centuries, and there are hundreds of great choral settings of the text. One of the most famous is by Johann Sebastian Bach, calling for the full orchestra of his day — strings, flutes, oboes, bassoons, trumpets, and timpani, along with choir and soloists. Our performance will include such an orchestra, and a selection of other Magnificat settings from the Renaissance to the present day, including those of Byrd, Rachmaninoff, Stanford, Howells and Pärt.

Since its inception in 1985, Atlanta Master Chorale has grown from a community chorus into an exemplar of choral performance. Under the direction of Dr. Eric Nelson of Emory University and with an active Board and steadfast audience of arts patrons, Atlanta Master Chorale concerts routinely now include commissioned and premier choral works from vibrant young composers like Joel Thompson and Jake

Runestad, the area’s most talented orchestral performers, and soloists like the world famous mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton.

During the shuttered stages of the pandemic, we pivoted to serve audiences near and far, offering Spirited Conversations — a live interview series with composers, reaching over 1.6 million YouTube views worldwide, sending weekly email videos of past performances, and featuring holiday virtual concerts for patrons. Today, the Chorale’s organization and its artistry are models for similar groups.

We perform four times a year at the acoustically brilliant Schwartz Center for Performing Arts at Emory University. Many faithful donors support the Chorale, with ticket sales making up the remainder of our funding. A recent initiative offers complimentary tickets for teachers, students, and others who otherwise would not be able to attend a concert.

Visit www.atlantamasterchorale.org for additional information, tickets, or to donate. Our Atlanta ShowGuide patrons receive a $5 discount on individual adult concert tickets by using the code AMCShowguide at checkout.

Performances are at 1700 North Decatur Rd. Atlanta, GA. Free parking.

The

Atlanta Opera’s Don Giovanni dons Seductive Shades of Film Noir

The Atlanta Opera’s groundbreaking 2022-23 Mainstage Series continues with a scintillating film noir adaptation of Mozart’s Don Giovanni January 21 - 29 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Stage director Kristine McIntyre brings this imaginative production to Atlanta as bass-baritone Brandon Cedel, soprano Mané Galoyan, and mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano lead a brilliant cast of singers. The familiar elements of the film noir style present new opportunities to reexamine the traditional roles of characters in this storied opera. The cynical, ill-fated anti-hero presents a more stark reality of the consequences of the title character while the dangerous and seductive femme fatale reframes characters previously portrayed as lacking license and liberty. These familiar tropes take a story whose relevance may be lost on a new audience and reinterprets it through a quintessentially American lens. Friday’s performance of Don Giovanni will be streamed live on Spotlight Media, The Atlanta

Opera Film Studio’s platform for all-original content. The second of four Mainstage productions for the 2022-23 season, Bernstein’s adventurous Candide and Wagner’s epic Das Rheingold round out a transcendent season of opera at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. The Atlanta Opera’s Discoveries series will conclude this spring with The Anonymous Lover, an 18th century opera by trailblazing Black composer Joseph Bologne, and Chevalier de Saint-Georges, to be presented at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center at Morehouse College.

Experience the Spirit of Hope and Love at The Historic Holly Theatre

The Holly Theatre in Dahlonega ventures on to complete its first full season in three years, following a successful season opener with “Into The Woods”. The Holly continues to showcase the regional talent in their 2022-2023 MainStage Season — “Hope Endures and Love Conquers All”, as they open their next show of the season, the musical “She Loves Me”, a hilarious and touching Christmas finale fit for December. Their season will continue in the spring with Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” just in time for Valentine’s Day, leading into the folksy musical “The Spitfire Grill” in the spring, and the beloved “Matilda”, which concludes the season.   With the new year approaching, the Holly is excited to welcome Taylor Jarrard as their new Artistic Director. Taylor has been a volunteer at the Holly for 12 years and The Holly is excited to welcome her into her new role. “It’s a privilege to lead the Holly”, says Jarrard, “The rest of this season is sure to be heartwarming, filled with stories of hope, some familiar to us and some new, but all equally lovable. We’re excited to share the rest of this season with our audiences!” (For show and ticket information go to hollytheater.com or call 706-530-5162.)

In addition to full-scale, main-stage

productions, the children’s program, Holly Performance Academy, is in full swing. Over the first weekend in November, youth performers put patrons into the holiday spirit with “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”. The delightful “101 Dalmatians Kids” will follow in March. In addition to full productions, the Holly performance academy also offers a wide array of camps in the summer. From playwriting to performance, the Holly Performance Academy has something for every child.  The historic Holly Theatre remains a staple in the North Georgia community. The beautiful and relaxed atmosphere of the Holly, with no seat more than 70 feet from the stage, offers an intimate and inviting setting for guests to relax and escape through the magic of theater.

ArtsKSU Begins 2023 with Strong Lineup of Events

The College of the Arts at Kennesaw State University will start the year off right with numerous ArtsKSU events, from innovative dance choreography to classical musical performances and engaging live theatre, and with inspirational art exhibitions.

Artwork from students in the School of Art and Design will be on display in the Zuckerman Museum of Art’s New Visions Annual Juried Student Exhibition, juried by Ben Butler. Patrons are invited to attend the free opening reception January 18 from 5 to 7 p.m.; the exhibition runs January 17-February 25 in the Fine Arts Gallery.

The Department of Dance welcomes New York-based company Boca Tuya and its production of “Amor.” Enjoy an evening of dance by acclaimed choreographer Omar Román de Jesús. “Amor” features breathtaking movement vocabulary, drama, fantasy, and humor. Elements of this work are derived from a long lineage of events and practices that may be tracked back to personal and collective experiences.

The Bailey School of Music at KSU will host Anthony McGill and The Pacifica Quartet on February 3. One of classical

music’s most recognizable and brilliantly multifaceted figures, McGill serves as the principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic — that orchestra’s first African American principal player — and maintains a dynamic international solo and chamber music career. Recognized for its virtuosity, exuberant performance style, and often daring repertory choices, the Pacifica Quartet has achieved international recognition as one of the finest chamber ensembles performing today.

In our world that is increasingly virtual, how do we traverse the devastating gap between our longing for love and our addictive need for information? Find out when the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies presents Caryl Churchill’s “Love and Information” February 21-26 at the Onyx Theater. In this fascinating kaleidoscope of 57 short plays, more than 100 characters try to find true human connection — and make sense of what they know and don’t know.

For more information on these events and to make reservations or buy tickets, please visit https://www.kennesaw.edu/ arts/concerts-events/index.php.

Alabama Shakespeare Festival Igniting Audiences with Jubilee and The Tempest

Alabama Shakespeare Festival kicks off 2023 with playwright and director Tazewell Thompson’s Jubilee on the Festival Stage in January. The innovative and heart-stirring score is an uplifting a cappella tribute inspired by the real lives of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. The world-renowned vocalists shattered racial barriers in the U.S. and abroad, entertaining kings and queens. For more than 150 years, the bold African American ensemble born on the campus of Fisk University, one of the nation’s premiere HBCUs, has blended their rich voices together to share a heritage of suffering, strength, and endurance. Featuring more than 30 uplifting spirituals and hymns, including “Wade in the Water,” “Ain’t That Good News,” “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen,” this performance will ignite audiences of every generation. Jubilee is recommended for ages 12 and older.

William Shakespeare’s The Tempest returns to the Festival Stage in February, directed by ASF Artistic Director Rick Dildine and starring ASF alumnus Greta Lambert as Prospero. The Bard’s final play is a story of adventure, magic, music, and forgiveness. Prospero has been exiled on an island with his daughter for more

than a decade when he conjures a storm that crashes his enemies on the island in a violent shipwreck. What follows is a story that asks, “How do we forgive and move on after we have been harmed?” The Tempest is recommended for ages 13 and older. Roswell Gets Back to its Roots

Roswell Roots is a community-wide, month-long festival that honors our diverse community and celebrates Black History Month, each and every February. Roswell Roots aims to educate, impact, and promote cultural awareness. Programs and events focus on welcoming all community members and offering an opportunity for all ages to engage and participate.

This year’s Roswell Roots Celebration presents a variety of events covering a wide range of subjects, including Health & Wellness, Sports, Literature, and History. Music and poetry take center stage on January 29 with Lyrics and Lyre: An Evening of Poetry & Music. Featuring performances by poets Ashlee Haze, Adán Bean, Mia Willis, & Jon Goode, this one-ofa-kind experience will showcase musical accompaniment by cellist Okorie “OkCello” Johnson, harpist Rayn, bassist Téja Veal, and violinist Carey Durham. Merging literature and music, this evening is sure to elevate your senses and engage you with stories from a lineup of artists living and working in the metro Atlanta area.

Headlining the music and theatre portion of the 2023 series will be Black Opry Revue and Leslie McCurdy’s powerful and personal one-woman show, The Spirit of Harriet Tubman. Black Opry is home for Black artists, fans and industry professionals working in Country, Americana, Blues, and Folk Music. This stellar line-up of performers brings the long-overlooked contributions of Black Country artists to the forefront in a celebratory evening of music and storytelling. Running in rep with Black Opry Revue, Leslie McCurdy invokes the ‘spirit’ of Harriet Tubman as she portrays the famous Underground Railroad conductor, recreating stories familiar and some rarely told, using words said to have been Harriet Tubman’s own. Through it all we learn of the faith and conviction that drove Harriet Tubman to follow her dreams; the spirit of the past connecting with the present, inspiring her charges to have the courage to do the same in envisioning their future. A Small University with a Dynamic Lineup: Oglethorpe University Presents its 2022-23 Arts Season

Discover Oglethorpe University’s thriving arts community! Here, it’s all about the experience — for our students and our audiences.

The university’s premier venue, the Conant Performing Arts Center, stages student theatre productions and music performances throughout the year. The Oglethorpe University Theatre production of Shakespeare’s classic play “The Tempest” is on stage October 21-30. A fantastical story of magic and mystery, “The Tempest” is one of the Bard’s final tales.

Following last fall’s co-production of “Heathers: The Musical,” Actor’s Express and Oglethorpe are partnering once again for a 2023 production of “Urinetown.” In the not-so-distant future, a twenty-year drought has depleted the land of water and all citizens must pay the corrupt “Urine Good Company” megacorporation for the privilege to pee. When a young idealist decides enough is enough, he leads a ragtag revolution to reclaim their right to pee freely! The show will run February 2-19 on the Conant stage and will feature OU Theatre students alongside professional actors.

On November 4 at 8 p.m., Oglethorpe’s student music groups will take the Conant stage for a Fall Music Gala, featuring the OU Symphony, OU Singers and Chorale, and the university’s jazz ensemble, The Jazzy Petrels. A sweeping display of musical talent, the concert will feature

music by both classical and contemporary composers, from Brahms and Mozart to Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. The Fall Music Gala is free and open to all.

Located in historic Lowry Hall, the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art hosts free exhibitions throughout the year, plus concerts, lectures, and workshops. The current exhibition “Mattie Lou O’Kelley: The Long Journey to Success” presents the works of the self-taught Georgia folk artist.

A small museum dedicated to serving a wide community, the museum recently announced a commitment to accessibility, including a partnership with local health or ganization Art Pharmacy. As a cultural partner with the organization, the museum is now included on a registry of locations around Georgia that may be prescribed to help man age stress, anxiety, and sadness, while offer ing a way to connect with community.

Seasons of Love

Pinch ‘N’ Ouch Theatre will present Jonathan Larson’s iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning musical that shaped a generation of audiences and taught us all to measure our life in love. Grant McGowen is a Founder and Producing Artistic Director of Pinch ‘N’ Ouch Theatre. He has produced theatre and films in Atlanta for the past 12 years. He is currently directing and starring in RENT, performing at 7 Stages this holiday season.

A note from the Director: The holidays are a time to reflect and reconnect with our chosen families. On the east coast, it’s cold. We bring blankets to the homeless, wondering if we’ve done enough. We light candles and set our sights on the new year in hopes of something better. RENT celebrates a diverse culture of artists who fight for their individuality while navigating through a scary world

of violence, discrimination, and a deadly virus. The characters in RENT want to form deep emotional bonds and save their neighborhood from gentrification, all while facing the very real threat of AIDS, that has taken the lives of so many in their community. I discovered the word ’rent’ means shredded in grief or rage. It means split apart when it describes communities, families, or other relationships — something nearly every character in the show feels. RENT glimmers with magic on stage and gives us a perspective on the value of time, but perhaps what I find most meaningful is that it reminds us that the holidays are in fact a season of love. On behalf of the cast & crew, we hope you will share your holiday season with us in celebrating this masterpiece by the late Jonathan Larson. Viva La Vie Boheme!
