aunched in Hong Kong to rave reviews and sell-out crowds, Atlanta Ballet will present the North American premiere of Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion Icon from February 9-11, 2024, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Acclaimed Belgian-Colombian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s original full-length narrative ballet will delve into the complex life of one of the 20th century’s most intriguing iconoclasts. The woman who launched a global fashion empire, Coco Chanel redefined the world of fashion, and more than a century later her legacy continues. That legacy is defined in part by Chanel’s brilliant designs, shrewd business acumen, and glamorous lifestyle; it is also defined by controversy and opportunism in her rise to the top. Through Ochoa’s wide range of dance training and acclaim for depicting modern narrative scenes in abstract and concise movements, she portrays Chanel’s life and polarizing reputation through ballet. “I am interested in telling stories about strong historical women,” said Ochoa. “Behind the

Beauty Brings Baayork Back to Byers! The Broadway legend returns to City Springs Theatre Company

roadway legend and Tony Awardrecipient Baayork Lee has found herself a creative home in northern Atlanta. The star of Broadway’s original A Chorus Line has helmed productions of South Pacific, A Chorus Line, and Cats, for the Sandy Springs-based City Springs Theatre Company, and now she’s returning for a fourth time to direct and choreograph the stage version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. “It’s a delicate balance, directing a show that your entire audience already knows so well,” says Ms. Lee.. “Audiences have expectations. Little girls in the audience have even bigger expectations! I think the key is casting the show with talented, original performers, who will each bring something unique to what may at first seem familiar to so many.” “To call Baayork’s hands ‘more than capable’ is an understatement,” said CSTC’s Executive Director, Natalie DeLancey. “She delivers for us — and for audiences — again and again, working with the performers and the production team to create beautiful, memorable moments on stage. Patrons have often remarked that they felt

like they were seeing a show for the first time under her guidance.” Education is always on Ms. Lee’s mind. Since 2004, she has been the Executive Artistic Director of the non-profit National Asian Artists Project in New York City. That organization, which she co-founded, includes a robust educational program based in the Chinatown district. Down here in Georgia, Lee found a place for City Springs Theatre Conservatory students in her productions of A Chorus Line and Cats, and she will be again giving opportunities to select young performers during Beauty. “The talent the CST’s Conservatory is fostering is pretty remarkable,” said Ms. Lee, “and giving students the chance to work alongside adult professionals in these mainstage big shows — even if they are only in two or three musical numbers — it’s akin to the life-changing, and career-influencing chances I was given as a young performer in New York.” You can catch Baayork Lee’s vision of the modern classic when Beauty and the Beast opens March 8 at the Byers Theatre in Sandy Springs. he second half of the Alliance Theatre’s 55th season starts with the winner of the 20th annual Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition. Furlough’s Paradise is a poignant new play examining the dynamics that shape our lives and lead us to where we make our homes. Cousins Sade and Mina, raised like sisters but now leading very different lives, return to their childhood town to try to make sense of grief, home, love, and kinship. Furlough’s Paradise runs January 31-March 3, 2024, on the Hertz Stage. Following, a radical reimagining of the Charles Dickens classic, A Tale of Two Cities, runs February 21-March 17, 2024 on the Coca-Cola stage. kid, already grappling with some serious questions of identity, when the ghost of his father shows up at their backyard barbecue, demanding that Juicy avenge his murder. It is followed by The Preacher’s Wife, inspired by the beloved blockbuster film, on the Coca-Cola Stage, May 11 through June 9, 2024. The Preacher’s Wife features an original score by actor, comedian, and writer Titus Burgess (TV’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and a book by actress, producer, and writer Azie Dungey (TV’s Harlem). Founded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. ur March concert combines two especially exciting elements: performing pieces we have not sung before and collaborating with other artists. This timely program will include Reena Esmail’s This Love Between Us: Prayers for Unity, and Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, drawing on themes of loving-kindness and peace across religious and cultural traditions. The concert begins with the great Chichester Psalms, sung in Hebrew and accompanied by organ, harp, and percussion. The piece conveys a sense of a hallowed rite, and by combining the Hebrew language with Christian choral tradition, Bernstein implicitly issues a plea for harmony. The program will continue with Esmail’s piece, This Love Between Us: Prayers for Unity. In past seasons, Atlanta Master Chorale has performed with a range of guest artists on a wide variety of traditional Western instruments such as a jazz trio, brass quintet, large and small orchestras, and a bluegrass band. But we have never collaborated and performed with sitar and tabla, instruments commonly used in traditional Indian music.

Indian-American composer Reena Esmail deftly merges Western and Indian musical traditions into a mesmerizing piece for our times as sitar and tabla are joined by choir and a chamber orchestra. Each musician is asked to keep one hand firmly rooted in their own tradition and training while reaching the other hand outward to greet another musical culture. The piece is in seven movements, juxtaposing the words of seven major religious traditions of India (Buddhism, Sikhism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Islam), and specifically how each of these traditions approach the topic of unity, brotherhood, and being kind to one another. ArtsKSU Kicks off 2024 with Exciting Performances and Events

he College of the Arts at Kennesaw State University (ArtsKSU) kicks off the new year with events featuring the School of Art and Design, the Department of Dance, the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, and the Dr. Bobbie Bailey School of Music. Interim Dean Harrison Long said, “We invite patrons to join us for some truly remarkable events in January and February.” The School of Art and Design’s Zuckerman Museum of Art will present “Reflections: Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Future, Ten Years of the Zuckerman Museum of Art,” opening January 23 and running through May 11. Reflections features a thoughtful, careful selection of works from the Museum’s permanent collection. The Department of Theatre and Performance Studies will present a humorous and honest evening of storytelling from a collection of guest artists and KSU alumni in “Stories for a Winter’s Night,” January 19-21. Next, get ready for the raucous musical comedy of “Reefer Madness,” inspired by the original 1936 film

of the same name. “Reefer Madness,” slated for February 13-18, is a highly political satire that will go straight to your head and leave you wanting more! The Department of Dance will host Los Angeles-based BODYTRAFFIC on January 26-27. In pursuit of the most challenging, original, and diverse choreography in the field, BODYTRAFFIC has made waves from coast to coast with its far-reaching appeal to surprise and delight audiences. The Bailey School of Music welcomes Band of Other Brothers on January 19. The music blends a variety of influences: the gritty South of the Allman Brothers, the funk of James Brown, the eerie melodies of Pink Floyd, and the improvisation of The Grateful Dead. Led by renowned saxophonist Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band), this crossgenre supergroup also features drummer Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, Sting), keyboardist Jeff Babko (James Taylor), Will Lee on bass and vocals (David Letterman), and guitarist Nir Felder (Keyon Harrold). Experience Two Captivating Exhibitions at the Michael C. Carlos Museum this Spring

his spring, the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Emory University presents two captivating exhibitions that promise visitors a unique viewing experience in the city. Recasting Antiquity: Whistler, Tanagra, and the Female Form focuses on a series of works on paper by the American artist James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903), created in the early 1890s under the inspiration of the recently excavated Hellenistic Greek terracotta figurines known collectively as Tanagras. The first exhibition to explore this theme in Whistler’s art, Recasting Antiquity brings some thirty Whistler prints and pastels into conversation with ancient Tanagra figurines on loan from the Louvre Museum, and considers what the taste for Tanagras at the turn of the twentieth century reveals about changing attitudes to classical antiquity and conventional Western notions of femininity. From West End to Brookhaven: Oglethorpe University and Actor’s Express present “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie”

iscover Oglethorpe University’s thriving arts community! Here, it’s all about the experience — for our students and our audiences. Conant Performing Arts Center, the university’s premier venue, stages both student and professional theatre productions and music performances throughout the year. The new year is set to begin with an explosion of glitter and joy. Premiering Feb. 17 at Oglethorpe, “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” is a bombastic dance musical about a young teenager who must overcome his naysayers to become a fabulous drag queen. In this joyous dance musical — recently adapted into an Amazon Prime original movie — working class teenager Jamie dreams of being a celebrated performer. However, in his working-class town where the status quo is strictly enforced, his aspirations are stymied by bullies and bigots, including his own father. In this story of self-discovery, acceptance, and wild, ambitious authenticity, “Jamie” is a dazzlingly entertaining journey. This exciting endeavor marks the third consecutive year of collaboration between the Oglethorpe University and Atlantabased theater company Actor’s Express.

“Jamie” follows two immensely successful productions of “Heathers: The Musical” and “Urinetown,” which featured both professional and student actors performing together on the Conant stage. With this collaboration, Oglethorpe students are not only given the chance to work alongside seasoned actors, directors, and producers, but they also perform on their own campus — a remarkable experience that bridges the gap between academia and the professional world. “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” is directed by Freddie Ashley, who previously worked with the theatre to direct last year’s hit co-production of “Urinetown,” which ArtsATL called “Atlanta’s first truly must-see, 10-out-of-10 production of 2023.” Tickets for “Jamie” are on sale now at actors-express.com. Luscious Romance of “La bohème” at The Atlanta Opera

ne of the most popular operas ever, Giacomo Puccini’s La bohème (“The Bohemians”) is a transcendent yet tragic love story told through enchanting poetry and music. Our romantic imaginations are sparked by Paris in the 1890s as starving artists face hardship with optimism, love, and open hearts. The Atlanta Opera presents this beloved masterpiece January 20-28 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center. La bohème features an exceptional international cast led by soprano Gabrielle Reyes, hailed for her “lusciously-colored” voice, as the seamstress Mimì, and, as the poet Rodolfo, tenor Long Long, who has performed as a leading man in operas all over the world. The opera is sung in Italian with English supertitles and also features the Atlanta Opera Orchestra and Chorus. Production director Tomer Zvulun explains, “This is an opera for those who are in love, or those who have been in love — which means that it’s an opera for almost everybody.” At times Puccini, a master of composing brilliant and lush

melodies, seems to have direct access to our tear glands with his disarming honesty and deep human perception. In HUMAN, a curious seahorse named Nacci discovers a deserted submarine left behind by the mysteriously vanished humans, leading him on a journey to understand who the humans were and why they disappeared. Through puppetry, HUMAN explores humanity’s environmental and societal impact. A special exhibition of Amenii’s work will also be on display from January 18-April 28. From January 31-February 25, Ruth and the Green Book returns to the Center. Based on the book by Calvin Alexander Ramsey and adapted for the stage by the Center’s

Artistic Director Jon Ludwig, this exciting Family Series show follows eight-year-old Ruth and her family as they travel from Chicago to Alabama in the 1950s. The family faces hardships and discrimination as they are turned away from hotels, gas stations, and restaurants. The introduction of “The Green Book,” a guide created to navigate the challenges of travel for Black Americans in the Jim Crow South, becomes an indispensable tool for Ruth’s family and many others, providing a safe and welcoming route through segregated America. Finally, Packrat takes the stage in February as part of the Center’s series of adult performances. This visually stunning puppet-forward play set in Sagebrush Desert follows a rodent who contemplates humanity’s relationship with the natural world. he Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University continues its Rialto Series season, Holding the Light, illuminating the winter months with warmth and joy through the arts featuring stellar performances by Grammy Award-winning artists—a cappella groups TAKE 6 and The King’s Singers, and two-time Grammy and Oscar-winning singer/songwriter/producer Peabo Bryson. The New South Festival Singers Committed to African-American Music for Four Decades

he New South Festival Singers have enjoyed an affection for music of the African-American experience since their first performance in May 1985. The commitment of the Festival Singers to scholarly, historically informed performances of music from the spiritual and gospel traditions has been a part of almost every performance, recording, and broadcast of the choir. The first recording of the Festival Singers, My God is a Rock, released in 1987, was entirely the music of African-American composers and folk traditions. For many years, the Festival Singers’ annual Black History Month Concerts were given in collaboration with groups such as the Morehouse Glee Club, the Spelman College Glee Club, the Atlanta Public Schools Honor Elementary Chorus, the Choirs of Grady High School and numerous African-American church choirs. The Festival Singers have welcomed world-renowned AfricanAmerican guest conductors, including Moses Hogan, Dr. Norma Raybon, Dr. Andre Thomas, and Dr. Anton Armstrong. The 26 recordings of the Festival Singers, including Legacies of Light, just released December 1, 2023, testify to the commitment of the Festival Singers

to music of the black experience.  In recent years, Music Director Lynn Swanson has changed the name of the annual February concert to “A Tribute to the American Black Composer.” While continuing scholarly performances of spirituals and gospels, the concert now places a special emphasis on music by African-American composers, especially those of our own time. Atlanta composer and musicologist Karen Bank’s setting of Pacem received its world premiere in Atlanta last February, was performed at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, and is featured on the new Legacies of Light recording. On Sunday, February 11, 2024, at 4 p.m., at The Church of St. John in Atlanta, the New South Festival Singers will perform the 2024 Tribute to the American Black composer with an innovative and powerful major work, Changed My Name by composer Linda Twine. The story includes modern interpretations of spirituals and newly composed music woven with the words of Sojourner Truth, played by Norma Raybon, and Harriet Tubman, played by Henrietta Andrews.

The Michael O’Neal Singers: Engaging, Educating, and Enriching for 35 Years

ince its inception in 1988, The Michael O’Neal Singers organization (MOS), based in Roswell, has provided a unique opportunity to the north Atlanta community to experience musical presentations of engaging variety and artistic excellence. Music has the power to inspire, uplift, and bring joy to people of all ages and backgrounds, and MOS is committed to sharing this powerful art form with as many people as possible, leveraging not only a programmatically varied live concert season but choral outreach programs to seniors, students, and distanced singers. Over the past several years, the MOS organization has faced new challenges due to the pandemic, including cancelled programs, reduced audience sizes, and higher operational costs. However, MOS didn’t allow these setbacks to stop the organization from sharing our music. Instead, the group pivoted to create new and innovative programs to reach audiences, no matter where they are. One of these programs involves outreach to senior living centers via video recordings of MOS concerts, which are made available to residents who may not be able to attend live performances. Heartwarming responses from residents and staff members of the more than 50 metro Atlanta senior

centers who have been touched by the music of MOS remind us that this connection is more important than ever, as seniors continue to need the engagement, connection, and healing that choral music provides. With an eye toward fostering a love of music and song in young people, in summer 2023 MOS launched a Choral Scholars outreach program, bringing talented area high school choral students into its Summer Singers chorus at no cost to them or their families. In addition to local outreach programs, The Michael O’Neal Singers organization has also created ONLINE MOS programs for distanced singers and previous choral musicians now unable to attend in-person rehearsals. These programs allow MOS to connect with and serve singers from the U.S. and beyond, who depend on MOS to provide a high-quality choral experience that may not be available where they live. Though this program was born from necessity during the pandemic, MOS is grateful to continue to provide this opportunity to our new choral community around the world.
