This family’s ordeal began with what they thought were fireworks on an ordinary February morning near their flat in Kharkiv, but soon Irina Nikolaieva and Yurii Nikolaiev realised that the rumours of a Russian invasion were true.

First they ran to a cramped basement with all the neighbours. But it was winter and after a freezing night they decided to return to their flat to shelter in the bathtub with their son swept in duvets.

After days of terror with lethal blasts shaking their home, they concluded that their only hope was to flee. In March they began their journey into the unknown.
