History Dauphin County is one of the oldest counties in the United States. It was first visited by French and Swedish immigrants in the 1600s, well before William Penn received his grant from King Charles II in 1681, and then by permanent settlers who began arriving along the banks of the Susquehanna River about 1710 when Englishman John Harris chose to establish his trading post and ferry, known as Harris’ Ferry. At that point in history, Dauphin County was part of a very large Lancaster County.

In 1733, the Penn family granted John Harris 800 acres of

tillable land on what is now the site of downtown Harrisburg and the residential neighborhood of Shipoke. His son, John, Jr., born in 1727, operated the ferry and managed his father’s extensive estate after Harris’ death in 1748.

A leader in the movement to establish Dauphin County as a separate entity from Lancaster County, John, Jr. traveled to Lancaster in 1782 to argue his case before the Pennsylvania General Assembly. He pointed out that traveling to Lancaster County to conduct legal business was both inconvenient and impractical.

The General Assembly granted Harris’ request and established Dauphin County on March 4, 1785. It was named in honor of the eldest son of the king of France, who had visited the American colonies during the Revolution. The county’s seat of government was located at Harris’ Ferry on land donated by John, Jr. During the year the county was established, Harris and his son-in-law, Senator William Maclay, laid out a town at the site of Harris’ Ferry, using Philadelphia as a model. The town was named Harrisburg in 1791, after a brief stint as Louisbourg, named in honor of the French king.

Hoping that the General Assembly would at some point consider moving the state capital from Lancaster to Dauphin County, John, Jr. also donated land to the Commonwealth at about the time Dauphin County was established. He got his wish when state government moved its headquarters from Lancaster to Harrisburg during the War of 1812. The first Capitol, built in 1822, burned in 1897. After several years of construction, the current Capitol, which is considered one of the most impressive in the nation, was completed in 1906. Artistically represented in

this majestic structure are the steel, coal, and railroad industries, major highway construction and expansion, and the fields of education, welfare, and mental health.

In a very short time, Dauphin County became a central stopping place for travelers on their way east or west and, consequently, a major center of business and commerce. Brick yards, gristmills, and sawmills proliferated. Spurred by the establishment of the Pennsylvania Canal in 1828, the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1837, and easy access to major waterways, the region attracted a number of iron and steel-making factories and later manufacturers of railroad cars and steam engines.

Immigrants from a host of European countries began settling in and around Dauphin County in large numbers, giving rise to a number of smaller towns and municipalities within a short drive of Harrisburg, which was incorporated as a city in 1860.

Located only 40 miles north of the Mason-Dixon Line, the county served as a major hub for the assembly and dispatch of Union troops during the Civil War. In 1863, prior to the Battle of Gettysburg, rebel General Robert E. Lee specifically targeted Harrisburg because of its vast network of railroad yards.

Growth continued throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. The electrification of streetcars in 1891 increased mobility between municipalities. With mobility came more economic, educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities.

With a central and strategic location about 100 miles west of Philadelphia and 200 miles east of Pittsburgh – coupled with a well-planned, vast network of highways and air routes – Dauphin County has grown to be a major hub for business, industry, and government. s www.DauphinCounty.org Life in Dauphin County, PA

Government Dauphin County government provides a vast number of programs and services for its approximately 271,000 residents.

Under the Pennsylvania County Code, management of the county is the responsibility of a three-member Board of County Commissioners, whose members are elected at-large by county voters to serve concurrent four-year terms. They are assisted by a number of professionals, including a chief clerk/chief of staff, elected row officers, and solicitors.

Dauphin County’s leaders are directly responsible for tax assessment of all county real estate; maintenance of all real estate transactions through the Recorder of Deeds office; issuance of marriage licenses through the Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans Court office; maintenance and funding of county parks and recreational programs; administration of the county court and judiciary system; county prison operations; voter registration and election procedures; county social service agencies; and economic development programs and initiatives.

The commissioners also oversee emergency preparedness, housing and redevelopment, solid waste management, senior citizens’ programs and veterans’ services. In addition, county officials coordinate activities and programs with Penn State’s Cooperative Extension office and are personally involved with farmland preservation.

ed and appointed officials who are responsible for managing a number of departments, known as “Row Offices.” The Row Offices record and safeguard official documents, collect fees for services and/or court-imposed fines, and aid in the administration of justice. Row Offices include the clerk of courts, controller, coroner, district attorney, prothonotary, recorder of deeds, register of wills and clerk of orphans’ court, sheriff, and treasurer. Voters also elect county judges, who serve 10-year terms.

The clerk of courts is primarily responsible for recording and maintaining the files and dockets of criminal and juvenile court cases.

The controller’s office manages the central accounting system of the county.

The coroner investigates sudden, unexplained deaths, accidental deaths, homicides, suicides, and deaths occurring during or following surgery but not typically associated with the procedure performed.

The district attorney’s office conducts criminal prosecutions.

The prothonotary’s office records documents on civil matters.

The recorder of deeds office records information on the buying and selling of real estate, information which is also available online.

whether a will is valid. The clerk of orphan’s court handles adoptions, guardianships, termination of parental rights, and audits of estate accounts.

The sheriff’s office protects courtrooms and judges, transports prisoners, issues gun permits, serves civil papers, and assists U.S. Marshals in executing warrants.

The treasurer’s office is custodian of county funds and is responsible for the collection, disbursement, and investment of the General Fund tax money.

Forty MUNICIPALITIES make up Dauphin County, including the City of Harrisburg, 16 boroughs, and 23 townships. All meetings of these municipalities are public and usually take place based on a predetermined schedule, at least once a month.

BOROUGHS

BOROUGHS are governed by elected councils and mayors and, in some cases, a professional manager. They may be structured to include a number of other boards and authorities such as planning and zoning, historic review, and water and sewer.

Members on these boards and commissions are appointed by the councils. The boroughs are Berrysburg, Dauphin, Elizabethville, Gratz, Halifax, Highspire, Hummelstown, Lykens, Middletown, Millersburg, Penbrook, Paxtang, Pillow, Royalton, Steelton, and Williamstown.

TOWNSHIPS are governed by elected boards of supervisors or commissioners and may also include a paid manager, an appointed planning commission, and other authorities. When you live and work in Dauphin County, you’ll find you have easy access to a high quality, ever-improving, transportation system. You’ll quickly learn that our streets, roads, and interstate highway system work especially well together. You’ll find your morning and evening commute to be relatively trouble-free, and you’ll appreciate that getting to our schools, parks, shopping centers, recreational facilities, and all of our arts and culture activities is quick and easy.

In addition to a well-designed highway system, Dauphin County residents have access to a wealth of Amtrak services, an excellent inter-city bus system, a superb local bus system, and a readily accessible, user-friendly international airport. Our

transportation network also provides fast and easy access to major markets, making it easy to grow or expand a business here.

The region’s network of roads includes three Interstate highways. I-76 (the Pennsylvania Turnpike) links Dauphin County to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. I-81 travels through the county, crossing the Susquehanna north of Harrisburg. I-81 offers us an easy way to get to Boston, New York, and the Shenandoah Valley. I-83 comes up from Baltimore, Maryland and crosses the Susquehanna just south of downtown Harrisburg. Route 283 connects with I-83 and I-81 just east of Harrisburg and provides a quick route to Harrisburg International Airport and then on to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Route 322 comes into Harrisburg from Hershey, making for a quick commute in both directions, and then Route 322 heads northwest from Harrisburg along the Susquehanna River to State College and Penn State football games. Route 581 in Cumberland County connects all the roads we have just mentioned to create what we call the Capital Beltway, a high-speed, four lane, circular route around the greater Harrisburg region.

Harrisburg International Airport provides quality air service to the traveling public in central Pennsylvania. HIA is a modern, post 9/11 airport. It’s conveniently located just a few miles south of Harrisburg in the small community of Middletown, thus its official designation as MDT. Harrisburg International Airport is currently served by Air Canada, Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines.

The reliever airport for HIA and the area’s corporate and general aviation facility, Capital City Airport, also serves residents of Dauphin County. It is located just five miles from downtown Harrisburg in Cumberland County. Both Capital City and HIA are run by the Susquehanna Area Regional Airport Authority.

From its hub at the downtown Harrisburg Transportation Center, Amtrak provides passenger service to major U.S. cities – east and west of Harrisburg. Amtrak offers hourly service from Harrisburg and Middletown to Lancaster, Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station (with connections to all the regional rail lines serving the greater Philadelphia region, including Philadelphia International Airport), and New York City’s Penn Station. Rail freight service is provided by Norfolk Southern. Motor freight services are available through a number of national and local carriers. Business Development Organizations The Dauphin County Department of Community & Economic Development In addition to providing a full array of economic development services to its clients, affiliates and the general public, the office acts as an advisor to the County Commissioners on matters of legislation, administration, and advocacy. The Dauphin County Industrial Development Authority DCIDA is the county’s finance arm. A major activity of the corporation is the implementation of the Team Pennsylvania program. The corporation is a member of SouthCentral Team Pennsylvania, Inc., which also consists of the economic development corporations representing neighboring Cumberland, York, Lebanon, Adams, Franklin and Perry Counties.

Education Colleges and Universities in Dauphin County

Dauphin County is blessed with a significant number of world-class colleges and universities, and is equally blessed with a large number of exceptional post-secondary institutions that are located in the immediate area. Anyone looking to complete a degree program, bachelor or graduate, will find just the right school, whether that’s a medical or nursing degree, an engineering degree, a law degree, or a teaching certificate.

The following higher learning institutions are located in Dauphin County (in no particular order): Harrisburg University of Science and Technology located in a 16-story office building in downtown Harrisburg, offers residents of central Pennsylvania the opportunity to receive specialized technical degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), while also working with a local business as an intern.

Widener University Commonwealth Law School offers law degrees from its campus, at 3800 Vartan Way. The 22-acre Harrisburg campus is located minutes from the state capitol and downtown Harrisburg. The campus is also home to the Widener Law & Government Institute, which specializes in the study and improvement of government law.

Penn State Hershey/The Penn State College of Medicine is Penn State University’s only medical school. The College of Medicine offers degree programs in anatomy, biochemistry and molecular biology, bioengineering, cell and molecular biology, genetics, homeland security, immunology and infectious diseases, integrative biosciences, laboratory animal medicine, microbiology and immunology, molecular medicine, molecular toxicology, neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology, and public health sciences.

Penn State Harrisburg is an undergraduate college and graduate school of The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), one of the largest and most widely recognized institutions in the nation. Penn State Harrisburg is located on a suburban campus in Middletown, eight miles from the state capitol. Penn State Harrisburg enrolls more than 4,000 students and offers associate, baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral programs as well as certificate and certification programs. Penn State Harrisburg offers the first two years of study leading to more than 160 baccalaureate majors offered throughout the Penn State University system. At the transfer level, Penn State Harrisburg serves students from all campuses of The Pennsylvania State University and students from community colleges and other accredited colleges and universities.

Dixon University Center, located on Front Street along the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg, is foremost an academic and governance center, providing Dauphin County residents the advantages of both public and private institutions and an expansive menu of undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs, professional development, and customized training that are offered on-site by a consortium of State System universities and private colleges and universities for adult students, in the evenings and on weekends.

Temple University Harrisburg, located in Strawberry Square in downtown Harrisburg, offers the resources of one of the finest universities in the Commonwealth to students residing in central Pennsylvania. Temple University Harrisburg offers degrees in education, business, and social administration.

Albright College, based in Reading, Pennsylvania, offers an accelerated degree completion program from its Harrisburg campus at 800 Corporate Circle, Suite 200 Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Dauphin County is also home to two private, for-profit career/ technical schools – ITT Technical Institute, located on Eisenhower Boulevard in Harrisburg and Keystone Technical Institute, located in the foothills of the Blue Mountains north of the city of Harrisburg.

private, residential co-ed college of 1900 students. E-Town offers degrees in liberal arts, fine and performing arts, science and engineering, business, communications and education. Also nearby are Messiah College; Central Pennsylvania College, which offers associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in business-related fields, and Lebanon Valley College in Annville. Pittsburgh-based Duquesne University’s Capital Campus in Wormleysburg offers bachelors and master’s degrees. Several other private and public colleges and universities are also located in Gettysburg, Lancaster, Millersville, Shippensburg and York.

K-12 Opportunities Dauphin County is served by 10 public school districts, one science and technology high school, one vocational-technical school and a number of private and parochial schools offering comprehensive programs for all children. In addition, many of the districts offer extra-curricular and sports activities as well as adult education programs. More than 21,000 students are enrolled in public elementary schools, almost 17,000 students are enrolled in public secondary schools, and almost 7,000 students are enrolled in private and parochial schools in the county.

The districts – Central Dauphin, Derry Township, Halifax, Harrisburg, Lower Dauphin, Middletown Area, Millersburg, SteeltonHighspire, Susquehanna Township, Upper Dauphin and Williams Valley – are served, along with the private and parochial schools, by the Capital Area Intermediate Unit 15. The CAIU provides assessment and referral services and educational programs.

The Harrisburg University of Science and Technology High School, also known as SciTech High, is a regional math and science magnet school that attracts students from Harrisburg and neighboring school districts.

Beginning with the 9th grade, SciTech High prepares students for a university curriculum, studying toward degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

D auphin County Technical School is a full-time, comprehensive public career and technical high school serving Central Dauphin, Derry Township, Halifax Area, Lower Dauphin, Middletown Area, and Susquehanna Township School Districts. Students from other school districts may attend on a tuition basis.

Parents seeking a private or parochial education for their children have a large selection from which to choose. A number of non-sectarian private day schools provide small classes, focus on independent and creative learning and/or offer college preparatory classes. Parents in search of a Christian-based education for their children have many choices. Jewish students can attend Yeshiva Academy, a day school located in Harrisburg.

Finally, there is one more school in Dauphin County that needs to be mentioned. The Milton Hershey School is unlike any other school discussed here, and really, unlike any school anywhere else in North America. The Milton Hershey School was created by Milton and Catherine Hershey at the beginning of the 20th century as a school for young orphaned boys from central Pennsylvania who had nowhere else to go. Today, the Milton Hershey School provides free education, career training, housing, clothing, sustenance, health care, and counseling to more than 2,000 racially and ethnically diverse boys and girls who are in financial need and social need.

CLASSROOM TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM

Early on a rainy May morning in 2016, Cyndi Camp and her husband, Greg Silva, drove to Clark’s Creek in northern Dauphin County from their home in West Hanover Township to collect bugs (macroinvertebrate insects*, actually) which they planned to take the next morning to Dauphin County’s acclaimed Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art where they would meet about forty students from Harrisburg’s Marshall Math Science Academy. In addition to the hundreds of mayflies, stoneflies, caddis flies, and other assorted aquatic insects Cyndi and Greg were bringing with them to the Ned Smith Center, the middle school students and their teacher, Kelli Recher, and a few volunteers, were bringing a 5-gallon bucket with the brook trout fingerlings the students had raised from eyed eggs in their classroom aquarium. The surviving brook trout from a package of about 300 eyed eggs were to be released that morning into the Wiconisco Creek that flows through the Ned Smith Center as part of a statewide program called Trout in the Classroom (TIC), an educational program sponsored by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the Pennsylvania Council of Trout Unlimited, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and, in Dauphin County, by the Doc Fritchey Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

Cyndi Camp volunteered nine years ago to coordinate the Doc Fritchey Chapter’s participation with Trout in the Classroom.

“Since I have a biology degree from Allegheny College and a life-long love of nature, biology, and the outdoors,” Cyndi Camp

said, “when our TU Chapter started to look for someone to serve as the liaison for Trout in the Classroom in Dauphin County I decided I wanted to be part of what I think is a unique classroom learning experience. I have been our TU Chapter’s liaison since 2006, and it is great fun and very worthwhile to work with hundreds of students and their classroom teachers, and help them raise brook trout in their classrooms in 55-gallon aquariums that have been provided by our Doc Fritchey Trout Unlimited Chapter.”

The Doc Fritchey Chapter, through Cyndi Camp’s guidance, works with seven classrooms (five in Dauphin County and two in Palmyra) to incorporate a hands-on, scientific learning experience that starts in early November when a package of eyed brook trout eggs is delivered to the classroom from the Fish and Boat Commission and concludes in the middle of May when the students take a field trip to a nearby state-approved trout stream to release their two to three inch fingerlings into the wild.

From November to May, the students are responsible for feeding their newly hatched brook trout (with a special feed formula supplied by the Fish and Boat Commission) and for monitoring the water quality in their classroom’s aquarium, which is equipped with a chiller to maintain trout-prime 52-degree water. Throughout the six months that the trout go from eggs to fingerlings the students daily monitor the aquarium water’s pH levels, and also the concentrations of ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates in the water.

Cyndi Camp visits each of the seven classroom several times in the first two months to train the students on how to take corrective actions when the water quality needs to be adjusted.

Cyndi Camp commented that she incorporates macroinvertebrates on the day the students release their brook trout because she wants the students to see the live insects the trout will eat when they have been released into a cold water trout stream. “I help my students feed their hatchlings and fingerlings with a special formula while they are living in the aquarium,” Cindy said, “but I think my students also want to know about the real world, and that real world is living on the bottom of the rocks in our trout streams.

Those nymphs, as trout fisherman call them, are what these brook trout will eat for the rest of their lives.”

Joe Kuhns, a success coach at Commonwealth Connections Academy Charter School in Harrisburg, another of the seven schools Cyndi Camp works with every year in the Trout in the Classroom program, commented the morning his sixteen students released their 187 fingerlings into Clark’s Creek that Trout in the Classroom gives his students access to something they would not have had access to in their daily lives; things they never would have known existed. “For the most

part, the students we work with are inner-city youth.

The farthest afield many of these kids get is to their summer jobs at Hersheypark,” Joe Kuhns said. “Look at them gathered around the trays Cyndi has set out this morning with freshly caught mayflies, stoneflies, caddis flies, and other insects.

These students have never seen insects like this, especially in this beautiful setting here along Clark’s Creek on a gorgeous May morning. This morning, along the stream means a lot to these students. Together, we raised these brook trout in our learning center, learned about water quality and how to maintain the proper environment to successfully raise trout in our classroom, and then we released them into Clark’s Creek where, hopefully, they will survive and grow up to reproduce on their own.”

*Macroinvertebrates are animals without a backbone that can be seen with the naked eye. These bottom-dwelling animals include crustaceans and worms but most are aquatic insects. Beetles, caddisflies, stoneflies, mayflies, hellgrammites, dragonflies, true flies, and some moths are among the groups of insects represented in streams. Macroinvertebrates are an important link in the food web between the producers (leaves, algae) and higher consumers such as fish.

Arts & Culture Wherever you go throughout Dauphin County, and at whatever time of year you chose to explore, arts and culture will be all around you. Harrisburg, obviously, as the capital city and the largest urban center, is the heart of the arts scene, but every community up and down the Susquehanna and into the countryside will offer you something significantly interesting that will capture your imagination.

The most popular of our many attractions is Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, located in downtown Harrisburg.

Whitaker Center was the first arts center in the nation where performing arts, science, and education take place under one roof.

Theatre Harrisburg, one of the oldest, continuously operating community theaters in the country, and the Harrisburg Opera Association, perform at Whitaker. In addition, the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet is the resident ballet company of the Whitaker Center. Market Square Concerts, which brings nationally known classical ensembles to the region, also performs at Whitaker and nearby at the historic Market Square Presbyterian Church.

Other important performing arts groups include the renowned Concertante chamber music ensemble, the Susquehanna Chorale, the Harrisburg Choral Society, the Wednesday Club for the Performing Arts, which is the oldest continuously operating music society in the United States, the Susquehanna Folk Music Society, the Chamber Singers of Harrisburg, and the Harrisburg Singers.

Open Stage offers dramatic works geared toward attracting the region’s diverse population. The Gamut Theatre Group is the combined Popcorn Hat Players and Harrisburg Shakespeare 28

Festival. The Leavitt Pavilion in Harrisburg’s Reservoir Park offers free concerts, plays, and cultural performances under the stars during the summer.

The newly renovated and revitalized Forum, a splendid concert and lecture hall owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, with almost 1,800 seats, is well known regionally for its Art Deco decor, and its starlit ceiling depicting the constellations. The Forum is home to the highly acclaimed Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra.

Hershey Entertainment and Resorts, which owns and operates Hersheypark, provides the area with three outstanding entertainment venues, one indoors and two outdoors. The Giant Center, located on Hersheypark Drive just west of the amusement park, is the indoor venue for some of the finest international entertainment available anywhere – think Cirque Du Soleil and Sir Elton John.

Within the confines of Hersheypark, you’ll find Hersheypark Stadium, the most prominent outdoor stadium between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, which can hold 30,000 fans for concerts. In past years, the Stadium has hosted Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews Band, Alabama, U2, James Taylor, The Who, and Willie Nelson’s annual Farm Aid concert.

The Hershey Story on Chocolate Avenue in Hershey is a hands-on museum devoted to the life and times of Milton Hershey and the town that bears his name.

Rose Lehrman Arts Center offers concerts and stage productions throughout the year. Other performing arts facilities include the Scottish Rite Cathedral, and the Zembo Shrine Building/Zembo Mosque. Although there are many multiplex movie theaters throughout Dauphin County, our community is extremely fortunate to also feature an impressive independent movie house – The Midtown Cinema at 250 Reilly Street in Midtown Harrisburg brings the most innovative independent and foreign films to Harrisburg and Central Pennsylvania.

Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz is one of the largest organizations of its kind in the nation. “Friends” offers a monthly concert series that has become a popular attraction in the Central Pennsylvania region. Friends of Jazz also presents an annual festival in June. Hershey’s cultural attractions include the historic Hershey Theatre, which offers first-run Broadway touring company shows, renowned entertainers and classical music and dance. The Hershey Symphony, based at the Hershey Theater, presents an annual concert series.

In addition to offering splendid views of the Susquehanna River and the surrounding mountains, the National Civil War Museum in Reservoir Park is the largest museum in the world dedicated to the presentation of a balanced portrait of both the Northern and Southern points of view of the American Civil War. The John Harris/Simon Cameron Mansion, which dates to the mid-18th century, features historic collections, a gallery and rotating exhibits. The Pennsylvania National Fire Museum displays permanent and rotating memorabilia including fire apparatus, engines and artifacts.

Fort Hunter Mansion and Park, operated by the Dauphin County Parks and Recreation Department, located on a bluff high above the Susquehanna River, dates back to the early 1800s. A number of cultural and recreational activities take place at the mansion and on its grounds.

The State Museum of Pennsylvania is a circular, six-story museum featuring Pennsylvania artifacts, historic documents, an art gallery, a planetarium, a gift shop and café, and exhibits of Pennsylvania’s industries and natural history.

Several public and private art galleries attract visitors from throughout the region. Among these are the newly located Susquehanna Art Museum at 1401 North 3rd Street in Midtown

Harrisburg exhibits nationally and internationally recognized artists to educate, inspire and foster creative exploration, collaboration and public engagement. Galleries also operate at the Historical Society of Dauphin County, the Rose Lehrman Arts Center, the Governor’s Mansion, the Jewish Community Center, Historic Harrisburg Resource Center, and the State Museum of Pennsylvania. The Art Association of Harrisburg hosts an annual September Sunday afternoon Harrisburg Gallery Walk with many participating venues in and around the Capitol. In cooperation with the Patriot News/ PennLive, the Art Association of Harrisburg presents one of the largest and best attended Memorial Day weekend art shows (The Artsfest) in North America.

3rd in the Burg is Harrisburg’s answer to “First Friday.” 3rd in the Burg happens every third Friday of the month. From 2nd to North 3rd Streets in Harrisburg, shops and galleries participate from 5 – 9 p.m., hosting bands, lectures, films, or craft demos. Since its inception in September 2009, 3rd in the Burg has grown in size, with a number of galleries popping up and shops remaining open after hours. s

Shopping, Dining &Lodging Shopping The bustling streets of downtown Harrisburg include shops offering unique women’s and men’s clothing and shoes, gifts, antiques, crafts, museum pieces and artwork and jewelry.

Strawberry Square, located across the street from the State Capitol, features an enclosed shopping and dining complex – 170,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space that offers everything from designer apparel and electronic equipment to mouth-watering snacks and meals. The complex is linked through enclosed walkways to the Hilton and to the Whitaker Center.

Just a few blocks north of the Capitol you’ll find Midtown. Along i t s clean and comfortable streets, you’ll find antique shops, galleries, The Susquehanna Art Museum boutiques, cafés, an extra special arts cinema, and a one-of-a-kind used book store (owned by Harrisburg’s mayor) and a new destination restaurant and art gallery known as the Millworks. The neighborhood is anchored by the Broad Street Farmers’ Market, the oldest continuously operating market in the United States.

Dining Just as with hotels and motels, Dauphin County is also filled with high quality dining options. There may be a national chain restaurant that does not have a presence in Dauphin County, but we cannot think of its name. You’ll find what you are looking for, and much more, when it comes to dining in and around Dauphin County. Harrisburg’s justifiably famous Restaurant Row on Second Street offers a diverse selection of dining options. We recommend you park your car at a meter and walk along Second Street on a summer evening. You’ll find contented diners seated “al fresco” on the sidewalks enjoying the company of their friends and neighbors.

Lodging Thanks to the presence of Pennsylvania’s Capital in Harrisburg and the attractions in Hershey, Dauphin County is filled with quality hotel selections. Downtown Harrisburg features two excellent destination hotels – The Crowne Plaza and the Hilton. Hershey offers one of the great resort hotels in all of North America – The Hotel Hershey. Hershey also offers the largest meeting and convention property between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh – The Hershey Lodge and Convention Center. Recreation

Although there are lots of places to start when it comes to having fun in Dauphin County, perhaps the most famous “fun spot” is Hershey, home to the world’s largest chocolate factory and home to a wealth of recreational facilities and activities.

Hershey’s biggest attraction, Hersheypark, is filled with coasters (13 as of the summer of 2016), water rides, family rides, and a boardwalk. In addition to enough rides to keep a family busy for days, the park offers almost non-stop entertainment, great food, and, perhaps most important of all, an environment that is fun to look at and enjoy. Hersheypark offers fun for the entire family, especially if you spend the day enjoying the Boardwalk and the water rides. Speaking of water, the Hershey Lodge recently opened the all-new Hershey’s Water Works at Hershey Lodge, featuring 30,000 square feet of family fun including a strawberry slide down Twizzlers Twists water slides and a chocolate peanut butter adventure across Reese’s Water Walk!

Immediately adjacent to Hersheypark is the Hershey Company’s Chocolate World, one of the world’s most popular corporate visitor centers. Admission and parking are free. You’ll start your Hershey Chocolate World visit with an interesting and fact-filled ride through an imaginary chocolate factory and end up knowing a lot more about cocoa beans, sugar, and dairy cows than you ever thought possible. After the tour, you and your family are

set loose among retail shops featuring all of Hershey’s delicious products; you can even create your very own chocolate bar.

Sharing the same gigantic parking facility as Chocolate World and Hersheypark is the exceptional Giant Center, the winter home of the Hershey Bears AHL professional hockey team. In addition to being the home of great hockey, the Giant Center is a superb entertainment complex. If you can think of it, it’s probably available at the Giant Center – rock concerts and symphony orchestras, Disney on Ice, the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, and holiday concerts. Giant Center is also home to a variety of Pennsylvania high school sports championships.

Just up the hill on the other side of Hersheypark Drive (look for the giant Welcome to Hershey Sign) is the Hershey Gardens.

Mr. Hershey’s spectacular formal garden, overlooking the town of Hershey, features a breathtaking assortment of flowers and shrubs, a stately collection of rare, signature trees, and various programs designed to delight visitors of all ages. The new Milton & Catherine Hershey Conservatory, which opened during the summer of 2016, is one of only 25 year-round tropical butterfly atriums in the U.S. You’ll also find in Hershey one of the premier antique automobile museums and car shows in North America. The Antique Automobile Club of America operates a spectacular

antique automobile museum, and also hosts their Eastern Fall Meet during the first full weekend of October.

The fall meet takes up every available inch of ground on or adjacent to Hersheypark and the Giant Center and attracts thousands of collectors, car fanciers, and tourists to Dauphin County.

Just west of Hershey you’ll find the Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad where you can board a 1920s era passenger car for an 11-mile round trip ride through the countryside. Indian Echo Caverns in Hummelstown offers your family the opportunity to “go underground” on a guided tour to view stalactites, stalagmites, lakes, columns, and flowstones.

Golf is big business in Dauphin County, and most of our golf courses are affordable daily fee golf courses. The exceptions are the resort and country club complex owned and operated by Hershey Entertainment and Resorts (Hershey Country Club’s renowned East and West Courses) and the Country Club Continued

Harrisburg’s City Island is filled with recreational opportunities.

The north end of the island features a swimming beach on the Susquehanna River. You’ll also find volleyball courts, a football/soccer field, boat launches, a miniature golf course, a mini-steam train, an arcade, shops, food stands and horse-drawn carriage rides.

The Pride of the Susquehanna, an authentic paddle wheeler, is docked at City Island. City Island is also home to the impressive 6,187 seat FNB Field, the home of the Harrisburg Senators, the Class AA minor league baseball affiliate of the Washington Nationals.

Wherever you go on the western edge of Dauphin County, you’ll encounter the Susquehanna River. For more than 225 years, the big river has been part of our community and our lives. Today, as it has been for decades, the river is a prime source of recreation. We run along it, we canoe and kayak on it, we fish up and down the length of the river, and we sit on its bank and listen to music, watch fireworks, and reflect on

the day just passed as we watch the sun set in the west over Cumberland County.

Dauphin County is a nature-lover’s paradise. More than 25 miles of the Appalachian Trail run through the county.

Wildwood Lake Sanctuar y, minutes north of downtown Harrisburg and adjacent to HACC, features 210-acres of woodlands, marshes and trails in a riverine setting. The sanctuary’s Benjamin Olewine Nature offers lectures, and bird and wildflower walks.

Dauphin County’s Fort Hunter Mansion and Park, upstream from Harrisburg on a lovely bluff overlooking the Susquehanna, just south of the Blue Mountain Range, offers a yearround collection of activities – a maple sugaring festival, harvest festival, Christmas programs, lectures and exhibits.

We highly recommend several “out-in-the-country” activities in the northern part of Dauphin County. The 949-acre Boyd Big Tree Conservation Area is one of the newest of Pennsylvania’s spectacular state parks. You’ll find it on Fishing Creek Valley Road. Not too far from there is the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art in Millersburg. Ned Smith provides access to hundreds of acres of meadows and forests and is a great place to spend a couple of hour’s bird watching. Further to the east you’ll find Lake Tobias Wildlife Park in Halifax, a for-profit zoo and safari park. s
