can claim to be the place where William Penn first stepped ashore in America, the landing that launched the Commonwealth. In fact, Delaware County has bragging rights to being the oldest settled section of Pennsylvania, with the first court, school and government office. History abounds here, as does great modern hospitality, dining, arts and entertainment, culture and sports. Delaware County Council works with several partners to ensure that people near and far look to “Delco” when they want to enjoy an outing with friends or family, or on their own. “In Delaware County, we are proud of our past, and energized about our future,” said Delaware County Council Chairman Tom McGarrigle. “We have everything here. You can see paintings by the Wyeths in Chadds Ford, Broadway stars in musicals at the Media Theatre, dine on Asian cuisine in Upper Darby or catch pro soccer action at PPL Park on the Delaware.” Delaware County Council is pleased to partner with the Chamber and the Delaware County 4

Conference and Visitors Center on many projects and campaigns to tout attractions from the scenic farmlands of Chadds Ford, to the tony Main Line, to the main streets of Media and Upper Darby. COUNTY COUNCIL HOSTS 225TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION This year, on

September 27, County Council celebrated the County’s 225th anniversary with a living history festival in front of the historic Courthouse in Media. Residents were encouraged to come out and join the fun, starting at 11 a.m. Chairman McGarrigle said it’s important for residents of all ages to embrace the rich history of the County. He said the 225th celebration hearkened back to 1789 with Colonial re-enactors, fife and drum music, a reading of the declaration that split Delaware from Chester County, information on historic sites such as the Lazaretto and Baldwin Locomotive Works, and theatrical vignettes about some of the citizenry that made Delaware County great. The 225th celebration was free and open to residents of all ages. Each guest received a free proclamation that declares Delaware

County’s independence from Chester County in 1789. DELAWARE COUNTY HAS GREAT FUTURE THANKS TO GLORIOUS HISTORY The

County’s history forms a strong foundation for the 21st century attractions that continue to make the County a vibrant, accessible, affordable place. “Delaware County is proud to have a strong economic landscape that fosters the growth of the arts, entertainment and hospitality industry,” McGarrigle said. He noted that Delaware County is home to fine hotels and charming bed-and-breakfast inns, providing travelers with many options for extending their stay in Delaware County. The County has many assets that support the hospitality industry, including an excellent network of transportation featuring the airport, regional rail, buses and trolleys and the riverfront. “Delaware County has the best of both worlds when it comes to proximity to the bustling city and all its attractions, while at the same time, having green acres of parks and open space,” he said. There are 12 county parks and

numerous municipal parks that provide residents with places for passive and active recreation. County Council is proud to present the annual Summer Festival of free concerts in Rose Tree Park and the annual Festival of Lights every December. A first this year was a free showing of the family film, “The Lego Movie,” on Sept. 19 in Rose Tree Park. FREE VIDEO ON CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS

To highlight the cultural attractions in Delaware County, County Council partnered with the BCVB to produce a short informational video that is available to residents. Delaware County Council filmed the video at the historic Rose Tree Inn, headquarters of the BCVB. The video details many attractions from restaurants to museums to wineries and arboretums. The brief video is available to groups or businesses that would like to share the message of county culture and hospitality. Discovering Hidden Gems

There are places in Delaware County that can add wow to any weekend, and turn any day trip into a grand adventure. So we’ve created a guide to some diamonds in the rough, some gems among the jewels, and a way to meet some new friends in a place the locals lovingly call Delco. So follow along as we find the surprises a stone’s throw from where you knew you wanted to be all along: Destination Delco.

Road Trip 1: Brandywine Country The Brandywine River Museum Ah, the star of the show, and our road trip. This old gristmill has been transformed into one of America’s finest creative experiences. The whole Wyeth clan – family, friends, mentors and protégés – is well represented here, as is the whole Brandywine ethos. It’s pure Pennsylvania, and we’re proud to say, the cream of the Delco crop. Make time to stroll the serene pathway along the Brandywine River just outside the museum. (Or float by on a tube or canoe when the weather’s warm and the water’s high.) And make sure you visit the studios of both N.C. and Andrew Wyeth, now open to the public. When you see where they worked, and how they did it, you’ll love the Wyeth art all the more. Media is a sweet little shopping excursion fueled by soul feeding meatloaf, a scoop or two of rum raisin, fresh fiddlehead ferns, Italian micro-brews and homemade gnocchi served by aria-singing waiters. The first thing we notice is what’s missing. There’s no Restoration Pottery, no Cold Stone, Applebee’s, no Cheesecake, Gap, none of the me-too shopping mall staples that make one American town look just like the next. Media is all charm with very few chains. More than likely, in any downtown shop or eatery, you’re one degree from the proprietor. And everyone’s got a smile to share and a story to tell. Best of all, virtually every downtown business in Media has embraced the concept of Fair Trade. Which means the stuff we buy in so many of the unique boutiques – coffee, handbags, scarves, jewelry, sporting goods, housewares – comes from companies that shun child labor, pay living wages and practice sustainable production techniques.

Road Trip 2: Downtown Media As American as Meatloaf and Micro-brews When the old time trolley pulls into Media, we expect to see Jimmy Stewart or Donna Reed get off at the corner of State and Orange. This little burg of Mom-and-Pop shops, tree-lined sidewalks and ice cream parlors has traditional Americana written all over it. But beneath the nostalgic surface is a modern, independent and deli6

This Golden Era gem is restored to full Roarin’ Twenties elegance, and packs ‘em in with boldface names like Andrea McCardle, Betty Buckley and funny lady (and Media resident) Wanda Sykes. Jesse Cline’s the artistic director, and has led this troupe for 20 years of standing-room-only. Young Austin Sterchele (rhymes with Churchill) Connors works the front of the house. He gives us the fifty-cent tour, backstage to balcony, and it’s clear he loves this place “My mother used to sew the costumes for the big productions here,” Austin says. Road Trip 3: Welcome to the Melting Pot

Upper Darby is a delicious mishmash of cultures

Crossroads of the World It’s the eastern most edge of Delco, and Upper Darby is where west meets the Far East, and the north lives south of the border. This old borough is a mishmash of cultures, and quite frankly, a delicious one. Upper Darby is home to folks from Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and who knows where else in Asia. And they sure can cook. The southern Americas are represented by Peruvians, Hondurans, Salvadorans and Mexicans with various taquerias and bodegas to satisfy your soul. Get a taste of Africa in stores selling palm oil, hot sauces and CDs of lilting Congolese rumba that set spirits soaring. This is a crossroads of the world, with travel agencies, nightclubs, beauty stores, day spas, food courts and groceries where English is a third language. And the shady sports bar with the Irish name has cricket on its TV. (But the tasty little hand-held cheeseburgers they serve are 100% USA.)

Dining Al Fresco in Media

First stop: H Mart This place is easy to miss, but please don’t. We walk right past the front door the first time around. H Mart seems to fill the hollow inside Terminal Square with countless square footage of fresh food from all corners of the globe, and all depths of the ocean. It’s Whole Foods combined with a Hong Kong marketplace packed inside an Acme from another planet. The H in H Mart is short for “Han Ah Reum,” which translates from the Korean to “An arm full of groceries.” Trust us, we need more than one arm to haul this bounty. The produce section is an encyclopedia of greens, melons, herbs and oddball squash we’ve never seen anywhere else. There are buckets of kimchee, the superspicy fermented cabbage that’s the kick-butt cole slaw of Korea. And a little window where we order steamed barbecue pork buns for a buck. Holy mackerel, look at this seafood section. All these brighteyed fish are so fresh they seem to still have their sea legs. Tiger prawns, croakers, porgies, sea bass, flounder, tilefish and wild salmon. Squid and oysters and clams and fresh whelks. Whelks! DestinationDelco.blogspot.com Road Trip 4: The Main Line More Neighborly than Most People Might Think At the northern border of Delaware County, about one and a half miles along Lancaster Avenue there is what is known with “clenched teeth” as the Main Line – from Haverford to Strafford. Wide lawns, large homes, a few colleges and several private schools are contained within the east-west roads of Lancaster Avenue and West Chester Pike (Route 3). Radnor Township and Haverford Townships contain most of this population with a little of Newtown thrown in. So we decided to take a tour of the area and get a sense of how the “rich folk” live. Our first stop was the Village of Wayne, a mile stretch of stores, spas, eateries, churches, and shops that could be more inviting if Lancaster Avenue wasn’t so wide. There’s a French pastry shop, Aux Petit Delices that also offers homemade candies, Wayne Sporting Goods, food shops and Blue Mercury, one of many spas in the area. Road Trip 5: Weekend Getaway Along the Riverside

So, my wife and I navigate our 21-foot Chris Craft from Philly to the docking area at the Deck at Harbour Pointe in Essington, the view of the Commodore Barry Bridge and the majesty of aircraft landing and taking off at PHL in plain view. As we leave the boat we marvel at the broad expanse of the river and the pristine marina and docks hardly believing we’re in Delaware County. We book ourselves into a comfortable suite at the Holiday Inn Express 100 feet away and head to the Deck for a five o’clock cocktail while we wait for our friends to meet us and head on out for an evening of fun at Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino and Racetrack. The Casino is technically in Delco, as is the Airport and PPL Park, but Philly wants to own everything in its view. Harness Racing is scheduled for tomorrow, but tonight after drinks on the Deck, some video poker and slots at Harrah’s, and dinner at “The Cove at Riverside,” we’ll be off for some serious gaming. Fortunately the poker and slots brings us a few hundred to the good, so dinner’s a gift from the house. The Cove has a rich tradition of seafood and steaks and stunning views of the Delaware River. Though it’s supposed to be “business casual,” and we’re dressed like “boat bums,” the hospitality is great as is the food. We select the 32 oz. Prime Rib, Chicken Française and Flounder Française and a dessert (guess who got the rib!), and we’re ready to hit the poker and blackjack tables. We don’t do as well at the tables as we did on the floor (!@#$%&), and we set off for a nightcap on the Deck where our view is as nice as any view in the country. LET’S TALK TURKEY

Lois Margolet grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, and had a dream to open her own sandwich shop but knew she had to make it completely unique. In 1976, she quit her full-time job and purchased a building in Wilmington, where the original Capriotti's Sandwich Shop still stands. Alongside her brother Alan, she decided to open a sandwich shop named after their grandfather, Philip Capriotti, with an idea to capture the hearts of real turkey lovers everywhere. They roasted whole fresh turkeys overnight and hand-pulled the meat the very next morn-

ing to make all their turkey subs. Soon, they ended up cooking 10 to 12 turkeys per night just to meet demand. Lois says the history of the “Bobbie” goes back to her childhood when her Aunt Bobbie would visit for Thanksgiving and make sandwiches from the leftovers. Decades would pass before the memory would resurface and by this time, Capriotti’s was already famous for pulling fresh turkey from the bone and Lois decided to go one step further to add homemade stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayo. Fall is a wonderful season to get your garden on the right track for next year. Want to add plants to your landscape? Fall is a great time to plant perennials, shrubs and trees so get your shovels out and get digging! You’ll want to protect your new plants from deer and mice damage during the winter and can do so by putting chicken wire or guards around your plants, especially young trees less than two years old. Have unruly perennials? Many perennials tolerate being cut back so tidy up your garden beds by November for best results. Before you get cutting, consider what that plant may provide for winter interest or seed heads for wildlife. Instead of raking and bagging your fallen leaves, consider making mulch or compost out of this free organic material. Run your lawn mower over the leaves for an easy shredding technique. Local residents are passionate about their Wawas. Not just because the company is located here in Delaware County, but for the connections they have made with the chain. There are 1.2 million Facebook likes and over 44,000 Twitter followers. Howard Stoeckel, former CEO of the company, relates how this family business developed such a strong relationship with its customers. The roots of the company go back to early colonial times, where the Wood family began several successful businesses. The family established a dairy farm and then the first Wawa convenience store opened 50 years ago. Stoeckel explains how this private company takes a long-term view. Like the stores themselves, Stoeckels’ style is friendly and easily accessible. A recommended read for anyone wanting to improve customer loyalty.
