QUALITY OF LIFE

The Essence of Tolland County By Drew Crandall | President, Keep in Touch

MY FIRST EXPERIENCE as a resident of Tolland County was in Storrs, as a student at the University of Connecticut. After I graduated, my career took me to Washington DC and Chicago, but there was something special about Tolland County that always appealed to me. I found my way back, and have lived and worked here for decades. As the host of Tolland County Economy, a weekly prime-time business TV talk show on Comcast, I’ve interviewed hundreds of local leaders in the business, non-profit, education, healthcare and government sectors. I’ve asked them, “Why do you choose to live and work here?” The overwhelming answer is summed up in three words, “Quality of Life.” People throughout the state, across the country, and around the world are choosing to settle here. Tolland County has a distinct country feel. For first-time visitors, or for people simply driving through on I-84 or Route 2, the County’s rural appearance can be deceiving. You won’t see big corporate headquarters or sprawling manufacturing complexes along the highways. But the reality is, “there’s a lot of life in these woods!” ROOM TO BREATHE: In Tolland County, you can buy a home with breathing room, instead of a postage-stamp lot. Our population density is 372 people per square mile, compared with about 1,200 in Hartford County and over 1,400 in New Haven and Fairfield Counties.

JOBS: Tolland County has about 3,000 worksites, employing over 41,000 people. Our employment rate is in the vicinity of 94%, better than the national average. A surprising number of our businesses have a significant regional, national and global impact in their niche markets. The County is also adjacent to major job markets including Hartford and Springfield. EDUCATION: In addition to our local schools, Tolland County is home to one of the highest-ranked public universities in the country, the University of Connecticut. You would be amazed how many Tolland County residents graduate from UConn and decide to live here. TRANSPORTATION: Tolland County has hundreds of miles of quaint country roads, but it also has highways that quickly link residents with points north, south, east and west. Bradley International Airport is just a short drive away, so residents can conveniently travel and do business around the world. HEALTHCARE: Tolland County is home to several hospitals and medical offices, complemented by major facilities in adjacent towns and cities. Access to quality healthcare is a major factor in the quality of life here. CULTURE: When it comes to music, the dramatic arts, visual arts, museums and 2015 COMMUNITY & VISITORS GUIDE 7

door health clubs and athletic facilities. It is home to nationally-acclaimed UConn Husky collegiate sports teams. Within a two-hour drive, there are also many opportunities to participate in professional sporting events from Boston to New York City.

historical sites, Tolland County has its share of fascinating venues. It is also within a two-hour drive of a potpourri of venues, from Boston to New York City.

NATURE: Tolland County has many scenic parks, hiking trails and places to swim, boat and fish. Within a reasonable half-day’s drive, residents can partake of the White Mountains, the Maine seacoast, Cape Cod, the Adirondacks, Catskills, Long Island Sound and more.

SPORTS: Tolland County residents love their sports! The County has many indoor and out-

SHOPPING: In Tolland County, residents can enjoy the best of both worlds: country living

and close proximity to major shopping centers in Manchester and Enfield. THE SEASONS: Once in a while, we get a record-breaking winter. Overall, Tolland County’s relatively moderate climate gives residents the opportunity to enjoy all four seasons without major issues. THE PEOPLE: With roots in agriculture and manufacturing, families in Tolland County tend to be hard-working, entrepreneurial, and down to earth. Whether a visitor or resident, all of these factors contribute to the unique, eclectic, and abundant Quality of Life in Tolland County.

WITHIN MANSFIELD’S ROLLING HILLS and river valleys are sixteen historic villages. The stonewalls throughout the town are reminiscent of Mansfield’s agricultural past. In 1881, Charles and Augustus Storrs purchased an abandoned Civil War Orphanage and presented it, with funds, to the State of Connecticut to found an agricultural school. Over the next five decades, this school blossomed into the University of Connecticut, one of the largest employers in eastern Connecticut and is rated top public university in New England by U.S. News and World Report. The Town of Mansfield owns and maintains over 2,000 acres of parks, preserves, open space, and agricultural land providing the residents of the Town and the region with numerous hiking, kayaking, canoeing, walking and biking activities. Mansfield’s parks and preserves range in size from 6 to 486 acres and offer trails wandering through woodlands, wetlands, river corridors, grasslands, rocky slopes, and scenic valley overlooks. Many of the Town’s preserves connect with natural areas owned by other organizations, creating a tapestry of rural Connecticut preserved for generations. Free downloadable maps of Mansfield’s Parks and Preserves are available online at www.mansfieldct.org/trailguides. Mansfield is home to a variety of restaurants and shops. The new downtown includes a Town Square with regularly scheduled events for all ages. See www.mansfieldct.gov/downtownpartnership for a list of on-going events on the Square and in Mansfield. 20 TOLLAND COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

UNION

a tiny, tranquil community in the “forest primeval”

WITH THE DISTINCTION of being Connecticut’s smallest town, Union was incorporated in 1734 and was the last town in Connecticut; east of the Connecticut River to be settled. It has the highest elevation in the state east of the Connecticut River.

Town Offices 1043 Buckley Highway, Union CT 06076 860-684-3812 Fax: 860-684-8830 www.unionconnecticut.org

Form of Government: Selectmen Population: 853 Area: 30 sq. mi. Schools: Union Elementary School K-8

One-third of the town’s area is state park and forest. Another one-fifth is occupied by the Yale School of Forestry. Nipmuck State Forest, Bigelow State Park and Mountain Laurel Sanctuary are the state forests and parks. The land in Union is mountainous and rocky with poor soil compared to the Connecticut River Valley. These conditions of ledge and clay make it costly and difficult for development, contributing to its continued rural character.

The primary industry in Union is forestry. There is a large farm and one restaurant. However, there are numerous cottage industries throughout town. There are no post offices or banks. There is a free public library, a town office building and highway garage, and a “Pavilion in the Grove” built by the townspeople where the annual Old Home Day celebration is held. Union built a new elementary school in 2010 that has approximately 80 students. It is not convenience or the cosmopolitan atmosphere that keeps Union’s residents and visitors happy and content. It is a quality of life with its simple pleasures, a slower pace of life, the ability to catch your breath after a whirlwind week at work that makes Union a wonderful community in which to live. 26 TOLLAND COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
