The marathon is a fantastic opportunity to show off the beautiful Sunshine Coast to the thousands of competitors that participate every year, while helping the local area. I am actively working with the Government to get more Queenslanders to get involved in recreation and sport activities. It is important to give children access to sporting opportunities wherever they may be, which can be achieved by helping to support sport from the grass roots level. THE GUIDE Welcome to the second annual 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon & Community Run Festival. It gives us great pleasure to bring you yet another wonderful opportunity to enjoy everything the region has to offer while raising money for charity. Last year’s stunning debut attracted almost 5000 runners over five distances and $150,000 was given back to local charity groups including the event’s major beneficiary Ronald McDonald House Charities. In our second year we’ve attracted even more runners from across Australia and 20 different countries. The already scenic beachfront course has been extended taken out the back streets and corners making it even faster and more picturesque than ever. It’s also a fully recognised AIMS qualifying event allowing runners to submit their times to qualify for international marathon events such as the Boston Marathon. We’ve added extra events including Cricky’s Onesie Runsie and the Trade Secret Thong Run to provide families, businesses and the community to enjoy the evening atmosphere of the Sunshine Coast while raising significant funds for charity. We’re grateful for the ongoing support from our major sponsor partners including Channel 7 Queensland, McDonald’s and Westpac and recognise the essential backing of the Queensland Government, Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Sunshine Coast Destinations and the Sunshine Coast Airport in helping make this a must-do event and destination. It’s with this support we’ve been able to build on the event’s inaugural success to attract regional, national and international guests. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank new and returning competitors, their support crew and families, the hundreds of volunteers who make this event possible and the Sunshine Coast community, which has embraced this as an iconic event for its ability to show off the region as one of the country’s favourite holiday and now event destinations. I wish everyone an enjoyable run festival and the best of luck in your chosen event.

This year’s elite field has grown thanks to international recognition
Sunshine Coast attracts World’s best Speed, climate and atmosphere have attracted some of the world’s best distance runners to the second 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon. The course was recently certified by the internationally recognised marathon body AIMS and the prize purse also doubled helping to attract further enquiries from international and elite runners. “To receive such high levels of enquiry from elite runners across the world to come and compete at our event in only its second year is exciting,” Atlas Multisports managing director Jason Crowther said. “We want the course to be appealing to beginners and social runners who want to enjoy the spectacle and atmosphere but we also see it as being an enjoyable and fast course for professional and elites too.”
In the half marathon Brisbane runner Patrick Nispel, who set a new personal best of 1:07:37 at last month’s Gold Coast Asics Half Marathon, will use the event to further consolidate his preparation for the Melbourne Marathon in October and his long-term goal of representing Australia at the 2016 Olympics. Gold Coast-based Commonwealth Games marathon silver medallist Michael Shelley will add some extra speed and a little glamour to the 10km event with a personal best time of 27:59 and previous wins at the prestigious City2Surf and Gold Coast Half Marathon. Event organisers haven’t ruled out the potential of one day holding a race that attracts a calibre of runners that could challenge Australia’s best marathon time.
“There is no doubt that the course is fast and exciting. With the right conditions and Leading runners include marathoner, Kenyan temperature it’s not impossible to think that it Joel Kiplimo, who previously won the could one day allow a runner to break the Blackmores Sydney Marathon in 2011 and has a elusive 2:10 mark on Australian soil,” Mr personal best time of 2:11:54 for the distance. Crowther said. Fellow Kenyan Sam Kipkoech (2:13:01) who won the Brisbane Marathon this month in 2:31 is expected to be among the lead runners while in the women’s event Sunshine Coast runner Roxie Fraser hopes to defend her 2012 title.

“These are ambitious yet achievable goals for this event, but it’s an exciting prospect. We hope it helps create an iconic community event that thousands of people continue to enjoy for years to come.”
Sunshine Coast joins list of BQ qualifiers The 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon is a qualifying race for international races such as the Boston Marathon. Race entries for the world's oldest annual marathon event are capped and require would-be competitors to complete a highly competitive application process. Ambassadors run for a reason For the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon ambassadors training for their “The event gives me an opportunity to promote exercise and get respective sports might be one thing but it’s quite another for those not involved in what has fast become an iconic community event,” Smith used to the mental and physical demands of endurance running. says. But it hasn’t stopped any of them from setting high expectations of themselves with surf life savers such as Josh Minogue and Jordan Mercer looking forward to the half marathon and 10km events respectively. Mercer, fresh from her third consecutive win at the world paddle board championships in July, even toyed with the idea of running the full marathon before opting to give her body a bit of a rest after the sixhour 52km paddling event. The current lifesavers join former Kellogg’s Ironman Hayden Smith and professional triathlete Casey Munro, who are relishing a speedy showdown with some of the coast’s young guns.
“I ran the full marathon at the inaugural event last year and loved it. I hope the event can help make Australians that little bit healthier.” Minogue, who has twice finished 3rd in the gruelling Coolangatta Gold, has expressed an interest in switching to the long course triathlon scene. He has entered the inaugural Sunshine Coast 70.3 in September and will use the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon running festival to test his legs. Other ambassadors include Active Living managing directors Dan and Nadine Sullivan, who have incorporated pre-dawn walks up Mount Coolum and Tough Mudder as part of their race preparation and upand-coming triathlete Rebecca Ohlwein, who will lead an all female team of elite athletes in the 5km event.
It’s the early bird that catches the fundraiser Getting up early is no problem for husband and wife personal trainers Dan and Nadine Sullivan. The directors of Activeliving The Wellness Company regularly incorporate challenging walks up iconic Sunshine Coast landmark Mount Coolum to take in the spectacular 360-degree views and sunrise. Recently they had an extra purpose, encouraging participants to donate money for Ronald McDonald House Charities. More than 55 people joined them for the walk, helping to raise $300 towards their $1500 goal. “If there weren’t charities like Ronald McDonald House all these children and their families would go through these traumatic events without any support,” Nadine said. “We’ve got about 60 people taking part in the event and there’s such a joyous feel about it. It’s not competitive, everyone just wants to be part of it because it’s local. It’s given them a goal and an extra purpose to get out, get fit and healthy and enjoy where we live. Seeing that enthusiasm from people is what inspires us to continue doing what we do.” PHOTO: Lisa Rosevear. The Active Living Wellness Team on top of Mt Coolum.

LOVE & PARTNERS CORPORATE CUP Corporate Need for Speed SPM Investment founder and director Mark Darling doesn’t run a typical investment company. The self-described sports fanatic may have worked 80-hour weeks for more than 20 years to build his business but his love for sports coupled with the Sunshine Coast lifestyle has seen him start to channel some of that intensity into health and fitness. In the inaugural 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon, Mark proudly led Team SPM to win the Love & Partners Corporate Cup with a combined time of 2:05:14. The team was made up of 13 competitors, including his three children all aged under 10 who placed highly in their age categories. “Having these kind of sporting outlets has not only helped me improve my health and fitness but it’s had a tangible impact on the business,” Mark said.

Kate's charity recognises the support the organisation provided her younger brother Freddie, who passed away in 1999 aged 11 from the debilitating disease. "I've got some great friends, family and colleagues and I think they see this as a way to pay tribute to my brother who so many had a lot to do with," she said. "I get quite emotional about it but it's happy tears. I think he's had something to do with it and my training. I am so excited about running my first half marathon. It's about doing something I've never done before. "The money raised can help so much. $1000 will buy someone with cerebral palsy a walker and $150 will pay for an hour of therapy. It's so nice to see how much that means and what that provides for people like Freddie."

PACING AND RACE ETIQUETTE
Pacers
Etiquette
Pacers may look like they’re having fun with their big smiles and bright balloons attached to their back while surrounded by a group of seriousfaced runners. But it’s a job that requires the utmost concentration and responsibility as they carry the goals and expectations of people around them, it requires some serious mental and physical strength not to mention a generous sense of humour.
When you are in a group around a pacer (pace bus) treat it like a football or cricket team. Everybody has the same goal, and like a team, everybody looks out for each other.
Among the pacers at this year’s 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon is renowned Brisbane distance runner Bruce "Digger" Hargreaves, 60, who will lead the 4hrs30min group in what will be his 125 marathon.
● Runners are encouraged not to jostle or push nearby runners.
Learn how to get the most out of following a pacer by using this helpful FAQ guide compiled by Bruce. Q: How do I find or recognise a “pace bus” on race day? A: Pace Runners can be identified by their “Pacing Flag/Balloon” which shows the pace group’s (pace bus) target time. You can find them positioned in an appropriate position in the start pack, which reflects their proposed finish time.
If you set a realistic goal and execute a suitable training program then a pacer will be an asset to you by stopping you going too fast too early (or too slow too early).
When running in a group remember:
● Give fellow runners enough running room. ● Try to avoid stopping suddenly or changing direction without warning to avoid anyone tripping and falling. ● At drink stations, particularly early in the race, it will be very crowded, but it’s important that not only do you get a drink, but your fellow runners get a drink. If you are close to the drink table take a drink in each hand and pass the second drink to a fellow runner who may have missed the table. ● Do not monopolize the pace runners’ time. All Pace Runners will talk to you and their experience will be helpful to you but be wary of sharing the brain’s trust around. ● You can help a pace runner by calling out kilometre markers when reached. ● Calling out that an aid station is up ahead.
● Remember pace runners are athletes just like you except they are there to help you achieve your goal. On rare occasions when they run into difficulty and can not finish the race if you are feeling okay don’t hesitate to share or take over his/her duties particularly if you’re running well.
Get to know your pacer
Q: Will a pace runner go by “gun” or “chip” time?

A: Where there are two pacers, the lead pacer will be targeting “gun time”, when the starting gun is fired. The second pacer will run according to “chip time” and will start their watch when they cross the timing mat at the start line.

A: No. There will be a delay when crossing the start line (this varies depending on the crowd size and start position). Once the field spreads out a pacer will run even mins/kms. In the marathon a pacer aims to get to the 30km mark with a small time buffer (one to two minutes) as a slowing in pace is expected during the last 12.2km. Q: Will the pacers help me achieve my goal? A: Pacers will encourage and help you towards your goal and that’s all they can do. Don’t use them as a substitute for missed training sessions in the build-up to the race, nor can you expect them to compensate for an overly optimistic opinion of your fitness and ability. If you set a realistic goal, plan and complete a suitable training program then a pacer will be an asset to you by stopping you going too fast too early (or too slow too early).

AID STATIONS
Aid Stations The multi-loop course provides several aid station opportunities for athletes no matter what their distance. There will be four manned aid/water stations in total, one every 2.5km. Volunteers will distribute water and Infinit Nutrition electrolyte. Please show courtesy to other runners and volunteers, be patient if the station is busy and call out clearly if you are in distress and need assistance.
Special Needs There will be one special needs table on course at Aid Station 1 (See course map). Runners who want to drop a bottle need to clearly mark it with their race number and leave it at the information desk on race morning no later than 5.30am. Special needs will be available on laps 2-4 of the marathon only (12km, 22km and 32km).
Prize Money Prize money for 2013 will be paid in equal amount for male and female competitors who place either 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the marathon, half marathon or 10km. An incentive will also be paid to the overall winner (male and female) in each event, if they complete the course in the times shown. Only one incentive is payable per event. Distance

Volunteers More than 400 volunteers from the Sunshine Coast volunteer their time to assist with the setup, delivery and packup of the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon. A crucial component of the event and we would not be able to run it without their help. Community events such as this provide much needed funds to local organisations, schools, social groups and surf clubs who donate their time. In return for helping out volunteers receive a Ray White Volunteers shirt and a monetary donation that goes back into the Sunshine Coast’s community groups. Please show your appreciation on course if you receive care, attention and encouragement from a willing volunteer. They want you to succeed just as much as you do. This year’s volunteers come from: Atlas Multisports Training, McDonald’s Sunshine Coast, Johnson Control, Maroochydore SLSC Cadets, Lanhams Mitre 10, Ray White, Alex Rotary Club, Westpac, Alex SLSC and ADF Cadets.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ASK A SILLY QUESTION AND GET A SERIOUS ANSWER. For other event Q&A see Facebook or ask the information desk. Q: Can I change race distance? A: Yes until the field is full or up until the entry close date. Please see the late entry desk at registration. Q: How can I enter? A: All entries must be completed online before 5pm, Thursday August 22. Friday and Saturday entries will be taken in person at registration at Mantra Mooloolaba Beach. Q: Are wheelchair entrants allowed? A: Yes wheelchair entrants are able to take part in the 2km event and if needed can be accompanied by a helper. Q: Why are children under 12 required to be accompanied by a paying adult? A: For the safety of the child, other participants, the public and race officials all children under 12 will need to be accompanied by a paying adult. If you’ve already run a race there’s no need to enter again, just keep your race bib. Q: Why do adults accompanying children need to pay an entry fee? A: For insurance purposes all entrants/participants need to be an official entrant. Q: When do race entries close? A: Entries close at 5pm Saturday August 24. Q: Can I request a refund? A: As per the terms and conditions on the event website a refund may be applicable. Q: Can I transfer my entry to another person? A: No, transfers from one entrant to another are not allowed. Under no circumstances is another person allowed to run under someone else's entry. This voids your insurance and will result in both people being excluded from further events. Q: Are race packs mailed out? A: No, all race packs must be collected in person by the entrant or a friend or family member provided they have a copy of your registration confirmation. This can be a print out or email on a phone.
Q: Are there cut off times for the events? A: Yes, please see page 17 of the competitor guide or the event website for all cut off times for individual distances. Q: When should I get to the start? A: Runners are advised to get to the race precinct with at least an hour to spare before the start of your race. Allow enough to time find a park, walk to the start, store your bag, go to the toilet and warm up. Q: Where do I leave my gear on race morning? A: A gear tent will be provided. Please clearly mark your bag with your race number (this is the tear off tag on your race bib) and leave at the tent, which will be between the Alex Surf Club and the skate park. Q: Do I need to return my timing chip? A: No, we use a timing chip that is disposable so you do not need to return it. Q: What nutrition will be on course? A: Infinit Nutrition Australia is the on course nutrition. They will provide a custom-endurance blend for runners along with water. Q: Is the course on roads or the footpath? A: The entire race is on closed roads for maximum comfort and race enjoyment. Q: I’d like to have a gel or other nutrition can my family or friends hand it to me while I run? A: Yes runners are allowed to take nutrition from friends but it’s advised they pick a spot either side of the finish area as this area will be very busy with spectators. Q: My parents want to watch, where’s a good spot for them? A: There is a grand stand open to the public overlooking the finish area otherwise there are lots of parks, cafes and open areas along the course that make great vantage points. Q: Can I dress up and run in a costume? A: Of course you can! This year we have Storm Troopers, Super Heroes among others. Make sure you consider hydration as the morning will be cool but will heat up quickly. Q: Is this the best competitor guide ever? A: Yes.
Race day checklist ● Lay or pack your run gear, shoes, bib, nutrition, visor, sunglasses and suncream out the night before.
● Pin your race number to your shirt the night before.
● ● Work out what time your event starts and plan to arrive with an hour before the gun goes to allow yourself time to park, check in your bags, ● go to the toilet and have a warmup. ● ● Work out what you’re having for breakfast before the event (don’t try anything new on ● race day). ● Sip on water all weekend and a little electrolyte because it’s going to get warm. ● Take something old to wear over your run singlet to stay warm before the gun goes. ● Say hello to your fellow runners.
24
Make sure you know where your friends and family will be on course and how you’ll find each other afterwards. Double check your start time. Go to the toilet before you arrive. Go to the toilet again just in case. Carry some water with you before your event to avoid dehydration.
● Get in a light warmup and a couple of stretches. ● Enjoy the sunrise and think about how inviting the beach is going to be when you cross the finish line.
