COMPETITOR GUIDE

This iconic community run festival raises funds for more than 90 charities and this year we’re making it a million dollars back to charity to help people in need.

SEVEN QUEENSLAND IS A FOUNDATION PARTNER OF THE 7 SUNSHINE COAST MARATHON AND WITH THE EVENT NOW IN ITS FIFTH YEAR, WE’RE THRILLED YOU’VE JOINED US IN 2016 FOR THIS FANTASTIC COMMUNITY RUN FESTIVAL.

As a foundation partner of this community event, Seven Queensland has made a considerable investment and commitment to ensure the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon’s future success.

Whether you’re here to set a new personal best or you’re participating in one of the run events because you enjoy the fun of the day, the fact is you’re with us on this journey and that’s what counts. The 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon attracts more than 10,000 competitors and spectators to the scenic Alexandra Headland course each year. It’s a must-attend event for Sunshine Coast locals but is also extremely popular with people from all over south-east Queensland

and our regional city centres of Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, central Queensland, Wide Bay, Toowoomba and the Gold Coast. Such is the calibre of the event we receive a large influx of interstate visitors and elite overseas athletes who are attracted to the world fast-paced course.

We hope you have a fantastic day out on the course and whether you’re participating or spectating, we thank you for joining us for the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon in 2016. BEN ROBERTS-SMITH VC MG GENERAL MANAGER SEVEN BRISBANE I REGIONAL QUEENSLAND

WELCOME RUNNERS

IT’S AN HONOUR TO CELEBRATE FIVE YEARS OF THE 7 SUNSHINE COAST MARATHON.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that we started planning our first event in 2012. The momentum the event has gained and the support it has received from the Sunshine Coast community has been overwhelming. As a Sunshine Coast local it makes me particularly proud to see runners from Australia and overseas take part each year, setting themselves health and fitness goals and supporting charity and community groups in the process. When we started in 2012 we set ourselves an ambitious goal to raise $1 million for charity within five years.

This year we will reach this target, immeasurably changing and improving countless lives for the better in the process. From a simple idea that stemmed from a love of running and a desire to give back to the community, we always hoped this would become an iconic event for everyone. Thank you for your ongoing support, without runners, volunteers and sponsors this would never have become one of Australia’s favourite running events. I’m already looking forward to the next five years.

Atlas Multisports managing director Jason Crowther and two close friends, themselves handy runners Gary Binet and Greg Biggs, were in Las Vegas in 2011 for the city’s famous Vegas Rock n Roll Marathon, a heady, music-filled, nighttime run that takes over the main strip. Its atmosphere, energy and dedication to raise funds for charity, inspired the trio to create a similar event on the Sunshine Coast. Binet and Biggs, McDonalds licensees, recognised an opportunity to raise serious funds and awareness for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), which provides much-needed accommodation and support for Sunshine Coast families of sick children who travel to Brisbane for treatment. In less than 12 months the first 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon took place at Alexandra Headlands with almost 5000 runners turning out for the perfect winter’s day. “It was an incredibly successful first event, the whole place was buzzing and we knew we had created something that the community could support and be proud of,” Crowther says.

ONE NIGHT IN VEGAS IT WAS A LIFECHANGING TRIP TO LAS VEGAS IN 2011 THAT INSPIRED THE FIRST 7 SUNSHINE COAST MARATHON FIVE YEARS AGO.

In the past five years the event has grown and improvements made so runners keep returning and its status as one of Australia’s favourite events continues. Course tweaks have been ongoing to ease congestion and retain atmosphere, while keeping it flat, fast and scenic.

Everyone“ deserves the right to feel like a rockstar when they cross the finish line. “ New additions such as on course entertainment and the rockstar finish chute have been well received and were always part of the Crowther’s long-term plan. “The biggest thing I took out of Vegas was that you have got to have entertainment – every mile had a band belting out rock’n roll,’’ Crowther says.

Sunshine Coast residents and local franchisees Tim Banks, Randy Birmingham and Gary Binet.

“It’s a lot easier and enjoyable running a marathon if you have something to take your mind off it.’’ Sunshine Coast companies and organisations will be responsible for the entertainment at each aid station and Hot 91.1FM will be providing a “Marathon Mashup” with music, bands and DJs every few kilometres along the course. The signature purple and green pompoms of the award-winning dance and acrobatic group, the Sunshine Coast Cheerleaders, will again line the red carpet to bring runners home. “This has always been, and always will be, a Sunshine Coast community event,” Crowther says. “Yes we offer incentives for elite runners but it’s the mum and dads, the new runners, the beginners, the people who didn’t they could do it, the runners ticking off their bucketlist that we want to encourage. “Everyone deserves the right to feel like a rockstar when they cross the finish line. Every finish is a major accomplishment and worth celebrating.” Taiwan’s Dale Huang enjoys the on course support for his 104th marathon in 2013 (top) and Kenyan Andrew Kimanthi crosses the line in the marathon (bottom)..

When the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon began in 2012 the goal was to raise $1 million in fundraising for local community groups and charities within five years. Taking into account entries and Everyday Hero donations to date this event and its participants have worked together to raise $905,078. We’re confident with your help we’ll reach $1 million on August 21. Funds raised have been shared among 70 different charity and community groups including our two major beneficiaries Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland and Westpac Foundation.

A FAMILY FUNDAY

There’s no excuse for leaving the family behind during the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon with a whole area dedicated to Family Fun.

Prams are welcome and picnic blankets are mandatory in preparation for a family weekend that celebrates community involvement, health and fitness. Don’t miss the Free Friday Night Movie, on August 19 starting at 6pm from the Race Precinct, in front of the Alex Skate Park. Enjoy animated adventure-comedy Rio, chosen in celebration of the 2016 Olympic Games. Sunday’s lineup includes a visit from 2018 Commonwealth Games mascot Borobi, Ronald McDonald, music, face painting, pony rides, food and much more. See the events timetable for the full weekend schedule. 2018 Commonwealth Games mascot Borobi will be cheering on runners as they cross the line for the 5th annual 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon on Sunday August 21.

MAPS & START ZONES

The 5km, 10km, 21.1km and 42.2km events each have recommended start zones. Zones will be clearly marked and we ask that runners start in the zone that best reflects the time they will take to run the distance. This system helps stronger runners have clear passage while protecting other runners from being trampled. Please respect each runner and choose your start position that best reflects your ability.

HAPPY LOOK FOR INNOVATION PODIATRY IN THE RACE PRECINCT FROM 5AM ON SUNDAY AUGUST 21 FOR YOUR PRE-RACE STRAPPING AND POST-RACE INJURY AND BLISTER CARE.

Picking the correct pair of running shoes isn’t a matter of getting whatever your friend or foe is wearing or opting for your favourite colour combination. Running shoe trends come and go just like the latest fashion. But whether you like or loathe what’s currently available, you’re best off asking for advice and getting properly fitted by the experts according to Innovation Podiatry owner Vanessa Ng. “The most common problem we see in the injury tent after a big event is runners with ill-fitting or worn out shoes,” Vanessa says. “Runners need to get fitted on suitability and not necessarily by us but also by the footwear specialist who sells the shoes.” Having worked as a podiatrist for 12 years,

with three-time marathon winner and brand new mum Roxie Fraser returning to her hometown race to face Brisbane’s long distance specialist and coach Clare Geraghty. Fresh from impressive back-to-back City to Surf wins in Sydney will be Cassie Fien in the half marathon, against Brisbane’s Emily Donker and TV star Dani Byrnes. Czech professional triathlete Radka Vodickova is expected to lead a strong field in the 10km as several multisport athletes sharpen put the finishing touches on their Half Ironman 70.3 World Championship preparations, being held on the Sunshine Coast on September 4.

Vanessa says the current footwear trends were “extreme” ranging from the minimalist shoe to the heavily cushioned runner. Vanessa says it’s crucial to take into account running technique, terrain and distance when shopping for new shoes. “The most common injuries we see as a result of incorrect footwear are heel pain, shin splints and burning at the ball of the foot,” she says. “A shearing, burning sensation at the joint of the foot can be caused by running in the wrong shoes. Swelling in the joint can lead to bursitis and overloading in one area can result in some serious pain. Spending money on high quality and appropriate shoes now will save you in the long run by reducing the chance of injury.”
