ver since the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon was conceived in early 2012, we have aimed to make the event not only the fastest course in Australia but one of the most enjoyable. We have always strived to make this an event with something for everyone and in 2017 I believe we’re closer to achieving that dream than ever before.

the first time with their support crew to experience this incredibly special place we call home. I’d also like to wish the best of luck to more than 70 elite runners of all ages representing their state associations as they vie for not only podium honours in the Australian Half Marathon Championships but also the opportunity to pull on the green and gold to represent this country at the 2018 World Half Marathon Championships in Spain.

This year heralds an updated course, more interstate and international runners than we’ve ever had and we’re honoured to have been awarded the Australian Half Marathon Championships by Athletics Australia. The Sunshine Coast is an event destination known for its consistent warm weather, stunning beachfront scenery and flat roads it’s also the perfect winter running holiday. I’d like to extend the warmest of welcomes to the hundreds of runners who are returning to the Sunshine Coast or arriving here for

JASON CROWTHER ATLAS MULTISPORTS MANAGING DIRECTOR 7SCM RACE DIRECTOR

And finally I’d like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the locals and return runners. Along with our sponsors, major beneficiaries, volunteers and supporters cheering on the side of the course, you are the reason behind this event’s success, taking it from the streets of the Sunshine Coast to the world stage. Enjoy the new look courses of the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon 2017 and happy running.

s foundation partner of the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon we are thrilled this event continues to grow year on year, and with it, the funds back to our Sunshine Coast community. Now in its sixth year, the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon will reach new audiences as the event also hosts the Australian Half Marathon Championships. It’s the first time the Championships have been held on the Sunshine Coast coinciding with a doubling in the number of interstate and international runners, many of which will be bringing their support crew and staying on for an extended winter break. More than 250 interstate and 100 international runners will arrive on the Sunshine Coast for the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon adding to the impressive number of regional Queensland entrants and local families, schools and community groups already participating. This iconic run festival raises funds for more than 90 charities with 100 per cent of the funds being returned to the community. As well as our ongoing financial commitment, our Seven Queensland team have again committed considerable resources to ensuring the success of this year’s event. We look forward to seeing the 7 Sunshine Coast marathon ‘Come to Life’ in 2017. BEN ROBERTS-SMITH VC MG GENERAL MANAGER SEVEN BRISBANE & REGIONAL QUEENSLAND

elcome to the Sunshine Coast! Congratulations to all runners for committing to the 2017, 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon and Community Running Festival. If you’re in the Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km, 5km or the 2km event you can be proud of the contribution you are making to your own personal or preferred charities. This event has now raised over $1 million, whoa! I’m so very proud of our own born and bred Sunshine Coast Marathon, its OUR PREMIER community run event. The Sunshine Coast is the most beautiful region of Australia. Please take some time to get out and discover our beaches, small community’s and our Hinterland. Congratulations to my good mate Jason Crowther and his wife Lisa, the Sunshine Coast Marathons’ Event Manager/Directors. Thankyou so much for your vision, purpose and your delivery. Also a huge thankyou to all of the organisers and especially the volunteers, love ya work! Last year my Mum, Lynn O’Pray, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and that’s why I am taking on the 42km marathon with the “Rockers for Knockers” team, to raise awareness and a few bucks for the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Foundation, after all that’s what it’s all about. Good luck to all the runners. “Lovin’ the Sunshine Coast. CR JASON OPRAY Kind regards,

MAPS & START ZONES In 2017 we have brand new courses that have fewer turns and are easier to navigate making them faster for runners of all abilities. Over the next few pages you’ll find each event’s course. Large maps will also be on display at the race precinct. Please look over them carefully and note the start zones that will be clearly marked on race morning and will help you find the best starting position for your ability.

AUSTRALIAN H A L F M A R AT H O N CHAMPIONSHIPS

GREEN, GOLD AND PODIUM PRIDE ELITES 2017

I

t’s been voted one of Australia’s favourite running events and has been embraced by the local running community, but this year is the first time the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon has had the privilege of hosting a national title event. This year the Australian Half Marathon Championships overseen by Athletics Australia, offers elite runners the chance to duel not only for the top spot on the dais but also Priority Status for selection to compete in the green and gold at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships to be held in Valencia, Spain, 2018. 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon event director and Atlas Multisports founder Jason Crowther said the not-for-profit event had gained a reputation for being a well-organised event with ideal winter running conditions over a fast course. “To have been given the green light to host the Australian Half Marathon Championships in our sixth year speaks volumes for the quality of the course,” Crowther said. “The line up is the strongest of any half marathon held in Australia this year for both men and women and we expect the half marathon to be at maximum capacity with elites and amateurs, soaking up the atmosphere ready to achieve their own personal goal.” Top runners will also be competing for a chance to win a $25,000 incentive on offer for any male or female who breaks the country’s long-standing half marathon record.

Two-time Olympian Collis Birmingham and Breaking 2 pace runner has his eyes on the men’s record of 1hr01min11sec set by Pat Carroll in Sydney 23 years ago. He will be pushed the entire way by sub 65 minute runners Isaias Beyn and Mitchell Brown. The women’s half marathon will be hotly contested by any one of several female runners including the in form Victorian marathoner Virginia Moloney. New course changes, which have removed four u-turns could amount to as much as a 40second saving across the already fast course. Loops at McDonald’s Mooloolaba, Cotton Tree and Picnic Point have also been removed as the course has been extended to Fishermans Road, Maroochydore. “That will mean significant improvement from someone going for an Australian record and for the general runners that are going to run some fast half marathon times,” Crowther said. The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) certified course means runners can submit their times for qualification into the Boston and New York marathons. Leading marathoners and 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon regulars Clay Dawson, Roxy Fraser, Dion Fioncchiaro and Andrew Kimanthi will all be on the start line again in 2017 for the blue ribbon event, which is expected to sell out with a capacity of 700 runners.

Check the start zone maps, respect each runner and choose your start position that best reflects your ability.

Rio Olympics Rugby 7s Gold Medallist Emilee Cherry will start the Westpac 10km and take part in the 5km run.

SISTERS S REACH OUT

Sunshine Coast sisters Ashleigh and Jaine Morris are running the McDonald’s Half Marathon together to raise money for Reach Out.

UNSHINE COAST sisters Ashleigh Morris, 29, and Jaine, 30, hope by running 21.1km on August 20 they’ll be the rainbow in someone else’s day. For the past few months the sisters have trained together as they raise awareness and money for Reach Out Australia, helping young people get through difficult times. By speaking openly about their own tough times, their goal is to inspire others to talk about what they’re going through and not be afraid to seek help. “For a long time I was down and out, didn’t have a place to live, I felt lost, derelict, an outcast,” Ashleigh said, after first experiencing suicidal thoughts at 10 and leaving school at 14. “It was my sister who told me she believed in me and inspired me to apply to uni to do what I love – environmental science.” “It took every inch of strength I had to show up and do the pathway course to get in. I went through uni and have been incredibly successful because I found what I loved. I will be forever grateful to the teachers and people who supported me and made me see a new light.” Jaine too has gone through her own tough times, working and playing hard in her teens and early 20s. “I was a party girl but always held respectable positions and was high performing in my job. But in my down times, I turned to alcohol and substance use as a coping mechanism,” Jaine said.

“I worked in an isolated community for a few years, became burnt out and being so far away from my family and friends, I turned to substances. I soon found myself on a slippery slope of addiction that I could not get off. “I eventually asked my family for help and I entered a residential rehab program here on the Coast. It changed my world. I now feel like I’m finally in a place where I’m starting to collect healthy coping skills and tools to deal with life and realise that I’m not a bad person.” Jaine and Ashleigh want to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage people to seek help.

We have to start talking about it and we want to get people to realise that there is hope at the end of the tunnel. “So many people get the point where life is hard, miserable, hopeless, and they feel like taking their own life is the only way out. We have to start talking about it and we want to get people to realise that there is hope at the end of the tunnel,” Ashleigh said. “It’s really concerning that here on the Coast we have one of the highest rates of suicide in the country.”

We’ve got your back. It’s our way of giving back. 18-20 August, 2017 raywhitemaroochydore.com.au raywhitesippydowns.com.au raywhitebuderim.com.au

hen the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon began in 2012 the goal was to raise $1 million in fundraising for local community groups and charities within five years. With your help we did that, and more, making a difference to more than 90 different charity and community groups including our major beneficiaries Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland and Westpac Foundation. In 2017 our top fundraisers are individuals and teams running for causes that are close to their heart. We encourage you to read their stories, click on the links, find a few dollars for them and cheer them on come race day as we set our sights on our next goal, $2 million.
