The company’s approach is epitomised with the recent launches of the Kanta No.2 floor-standing speaker and additions to the company’s 300 Series of flush-mount CI speakers. Both utilise Focal’s patented Flax technology for the mid/bass drivers, which ‘sandwich’ the flax-based eco-textile between two sheets of glass fibre for a very lightweight yet incredibly ridged cone. The use of this material across Kanta, the 300 Series and the company’s Aria ranges means that CI installers can mix and match products depending on the application. For example, a 5.1 system using in-wall centre channel and in-ceiling rear speakers with floor-standing left and right speakers can be created and still deliver the same high level of performance and the same ‘voice’ as a more conventional system made up of products from the same range. Crucially for 2018, Focal has focused its attention heavily on the CI market. At ISE 2018, the company introduced new models to its 300 Series mid-priced flush mount range (new models – IW6, IWLCR6, ICLCR5) whilst also launching an entry-level range called the 100 Series. The 100 Series range is composed of three coaxial loudspeakers, all of which can be used as either in-wall or in ceiling loudspeakers (100 ICW5, 100 ICW6 and 100 ICW8), one coaxial in-ceiling stereo loudspeaker (100 IC6ST), one in-ceiling loudspeaker (100 IC LCR5) and two products specifically intended for in-wall use (100 IW6, 100 IWLCR5). Mirroring the technology of the company’s Chorus 700 Series, which uses Focal’s Polyglass cone technology that is created by applying molten glass microballs to a cellulose pulp cone, the 100 Series is a comprehensive range of in-wall, in-ceiling, LCR and in-ceiling LCR speakers, all designed to integrate into any interior and offer the same levels of performance Focal’s home audio products are renowned for. As with all Focal speakers, the new introductions conform to the company’s signature sound due to extensive testing and auditioning. The Focal sound strives to be natural and faithful to the original recording. The range has also been designed to deliver a wide range of
applications through a relatively small range of products. The new ‘CI’ speakers are suitable for every room in the house, can cope with rooms of different sizes and are suitable for multiple uses (sound systems, home cinemas up to 320ft2/30m2). Thin bezels and high-power handling also add to their CI suitability. The 100 Series is equipped with Focal technologies including the aluminium inverted dome tweeter and all models are also suitable for a wide-range of applications, including humid environments such as bathrooms. The 300 Series range is made in France and features exclusive Focal technologies, such as its attractive Flax cone and the aluminium-magnesium inverted dome tweeter, designed to provide audiophile sound quality. The 300 Series also provides the EQI system which stands for Easy Quick Install. Whether they’re used as in-ceiling or in-wall loudspeakers, they require no tools to install. Focal adds that these new products also meet the most essential criteria regarding use and installation; frameless, adjustable tweeters and magnetic grilles. Other additional products (outdoor, subwoofer and amplifier) will be added to the CI in the coming months. The accessories required for installation, pre-mounting kit and fire barrier box, are already available. Release dates are all this year. The 100 Series hits this February, the 300 Series comes in May and come autumn the outdoor, subwoofer and amplifier become available. Thanks to the new introduction, installers can now call on the Focal sound for every project they are involved in offering a complete AV and install package from a maker with serious audio pedigree. Would you buy a car without a test drive? Probably not, so isn’t it curious that most customers will buy architectural speakers without listening to them first? Distributor Anatech thinks so and when customers buy without auditioning, they are trusting the dealer to be making a recommendation based on the client’s interests and not those of the seller. We betray that trust at our peril. Distributors for BluCube loudspeakers, Anatech provides (and positively encourages) such auditioning. In blind A-B tests, the company says it has discovered that customers frequently select BluCube as their preference compared to better-known-branded, more expensive, in-ceiling speakers. This price performance benefit means the customer can stretch their budget to accommodate more rooms of multi-room music. It shows their dealer is validating his trustworthiness which, in turn, improves the chances of the dealer winning the business. Obviously, such trust is not just about the speakers. Amongst other elements, the sound system driving them is just as important of course. Thankfully, Anatech also distributes the Bluesound and NAD brands including BluOS, the award-winning, high res (24/192 and MQA) multi-room audio system which offers a distinctive and quality choice in the wireless musicstreaming category. Speaker Fire Hoods and Building Regs Curiously, some buildings control officers insist on fire hoods for ceiling speakers and others do not. In light of recent tragic events, fire protection is a topic that is frequently raised and needs addressing. The advice is to err on the side of caution and fit them where there are occupants above. The objective of a speaker fire-hood of course is to maintain the fire integrity of a ceiling system after an aperture is cut to house a speaker. Until now, fire hoods have been notoriously fiddly to fit. In 2016, BluCube developed a new design of fire hood that provides fire protection in a one-size-fits-(almost)-all product that is designed to be fast and easy to install. Anatech says the design (in patent-applied-for status) has been furnace tested by a worldrenowned UK fire testing company in the most common ceiling system found in UK homes. Despite the speaker melting and falling out within the first five minutes of the test – rendering the aperture wide open to the inferno – the BluCube hood maintained the fire integrity of the ceiling system beyond the specification of that system, thus achieving its desired objective. The design features an inverted flange that allows a perfect seal to be easily made when seating the hood on the upper surface of the ceiling plasterboard. Monitor Audio goes super-slim A new super slim in-wall range opens up new installation possibilities thanks to a profile of just 50mm depth.
The form factor opens up install flexibility
The three-driver layout helps keep the frontal profile slender, but provides a similar surface area and performance to a typical 6½in driver, says the maker. All three models (good, better, best) in the family share the same footprint and pre-constriction bracket, providing simplicity, as well as the option of specifying a higher performance model in the range before completion. The entry-point WSS130 features MMP II cone drivers, augmented by a 25mm Gold Dome tweeter, and is well suited to home theatre and music applications. The mid-point WSS230 features Monitor Audio’s C-CAM metal cone drivers and is ideal for set-ups where more critical music reproduction is required. It offers a step-up in performance in increased precision and detailed sonic characteristics, when compared to the WSS130. Monitor Audio says the WSS430 offers supreme audio performance, drawing on design principles, and materials from the maker’s flagship Platinum speakers. Almost every component is unique to this model. Employing dished C-CAM cones, the WSS430 design ensures ultimate
diaphragm rigidity – the main aim here being to reduce distortion. High strength Neo magnets and larger voice coils provide high-level driving force, low magnetic leakage, and slim profile. The magnetic system provides an ‘under-hung’ motor arrangement, ensuring the coil stays in the gap, reducing distortion further and increasing power handling. The MPD high frequency transducer technology – also from Monitor Audio’s flagship Platinum designs – ensures low distortion, delivering clear high frequency to over 50 kHz. Remove the model’s magnetic front trim and you can rotate the tweeter to provide the optimum dispersion when using the model in a landscape orientation. Using the range, the possibility of operating in constructions featuring two inch studs slips becomes possible, as well as in areas restricted by AVC ducts, cabling or pipework. A further attraction is the WSS line’s ability to be installed between a standard 14in stud bays, when used in a horizontal (landscape) orientation.
