Just as you wouldn’t handle complex plumbing or car maintenance yourself, your home technology deserves the same expert care. Here, we take a look at some of the incredible options available—how many could improve your home life?
Home automation and control
While often implemented during a renovation or new build, home automation can also be retrofitted to existing homes. These systems allow you to manage entertainment, lighting, heating/cooling, energy usage, communication and security through a single, intuitive interface.
Music and movies everywhere
With a home control system, you can bring all your favourite music and video content to any room, whenever you need it. Whether it’s streaming TV, accessing the web, or enjoying your personal music and video collections, this technology makes it all accessible
at your fingertips, wherever you are in your home.
Smart lighting and shading
Lighting control systems not only enhance your home’s security and energy efficiency but also allow
you to set the perfect mood and aesthetic. Automated shading works hand-in-hand with lighting to manage natural light levels, improving both the comfort and privacy of your home while contributing to energy savings.
Intelligent security
Advanced security systems offer precise control over access to your property, enabling you to view CCTV footage and manage access remotely from anywhere. Intercom systems allow seamless communication within large homes, keeping everyone connected even when spread out.
Outdoor systems
Don’t forget your outdoor spaces! Today’s technology allows you to extend your entertainment and automation/lighting experiences into your garden or terrace. Whether you want to enjoy music, movies, or ambient lighting outdoors, the possibilities are endless.
Home cinemas
Create the ultimate movie-watching experience with a dedicated home cinema. Whether designed for a purpose-built space or blended into your existing living area, home cinemas bring high-quality entertainment right to your doorstep. Enjoy concerts, sports, or films in the finest quality available today, with the ability to fully immerse yourself in the experience. Your system can either be integrated seamlessly into your room, only revealing itself when in use, or stand as a dedicated space that offers unparalleled escapism.
Hi-Fi listening rooms
If you’re a music lover, why not create the perfect space to enjoy your favourite albums? Expertly designed Hi-Fi listening rooms provide exceptional sound quality, whether you prefer vinyl, CDs, or high-definition streaming. With the blend of traditional audio craftsmanship and modern technology, today’s Hi-Fi systems offer a level of clarity and convenience that’s hard to beat.
Reliable networks
In the modern home, a dependable Wi-Fi or network is essential. Whether it’s streaming, gaming, or browsing, a fast and stable connection can make all the difference. Installing a robust network is key to ensuring your home’s systems run smoothly, allowing you to enjoy a flawless digital experience across all your devices. Say goodbye to slow speeds and buffering forever!
Pick what works for you
A whole-home system brings together cutting-edge entertainment, efficiency, and security technologies, making everything easy for your family to use and enjoy. However, it’s just as easy to start small and add individual systems like Multi-Room Music or Lighting Control. Talk to your installer to find the perfect fit for your home and budget— there’s a wide range of options available to suit your specific needs.
Lighting ControlThe Intelligent Choice
A smart lighting control system allows you to manage multiple light fixtures and even entire rooms with the press of a single button. Instead of relying on traditional switches for each light, a well-designed system will simplify your controls by using ‘scenes’—preset lighting configurations that fit different activities or moods.
Instead of having separate buttons for every circuit in your living room, you could have a single button
labelled ‘Relax’ that sets the room’s lights to a cosy, dimmed setting. Or, you could have a ‘Cooking’ button in the kitchen that brings up bright task lighting over your countertops, and another called ‘Dining’ to make eating your carefully prepared dinner much more pleasurable. The beauty of this is that you’re not just turning lights on and off—you’re controlling the mood, the atmosphere, and the functionality of your space.
The Role of a Lighting Designer
While many homeowners might consider setting up a lighting control system themselves or relying on an installer, the real magic happens when a lighting designer is involved. A designer doesn’t just think about where lights should go — they focus on how the lights are used, creating an experience that fits your lifestyle.
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make with lighting control systems is programming each button to control individual lights or circuits. This often results in too many buttons, which can make the system confusing. Instead, a lighting designer takes a holistic approach. By understanding how you live in your home — when and where you cook, relax, entertain, or read—they create tailored scenes that make the system intuitive. You’ll know exactly what each button does, because it aligns with your daily activities and needs.
What Should the Buttons Do?
When it comes to smart lighting control, it’s all about actions, not objects. The controls should be programmed around what you’re doing, not which specific light is turning on or off. For instance, instead of labelling a button ‘Pendant Light’ or ‘Wall Sconce’, it could be named after the task it’s designed for — like ‘Movie Night’, or ‘Relaxing’, and can include supplementary lighting from other circuits.
A good designer will start by understanding your routines and create scenes based on those activities.
The goal is to simplify your experience. Rather than making you think about which lights to turn on, the scenes do the work for you, instantly transforming your space to suit the task at hand.
The Advantages of a Designer-Led Setup
1. Tailored to Your Lifestyle:
A designer doesn’t just install a generic system; they get to know how you live, ensuring your lighting scenes are personalised to your needs. Whether it’s creating a ‘Morning Coffee’ scene in the kitchen or a ‘Bedtime’ scene in the
bedroom, every button is designed with you in mind.
2. Simplified Controls: A lighting designer avoids the confusion of multiple buttons controlling individual lights. Instead, they use a fewer number of buttons, each of which triggers a carefully thoughtout scene that aligns with your daily tasks.
3. Aesthetic Consideration: Designers ensure the control system blends seamlessly with your home’s decor. Whether that means choosing sleek keypads that complement your design or integrating voice control through systems like Alexa, a designer makes sure the controls don’t detract from the beauty of your space.
4. Energy Efficiency: Lighting controls aren’t just about convenience—they can save energy too. Designers can create scenes that automatically adjust based on the time of day, dim lights when they aren’t needed, or turn off lighting in rooms you aren’t using.
5. Future-Proofing: A well-designed lighting control system is built to last and adapt. As your needs change or new technologies emerge, a professional designer can help you adjust your system to keep it up-to-date.
Flexibility for the Future
A common fear with any smart technology is that it might become outdated. But when designed properly, a lighting control system is built to grow and adapt. Most systems come with apps that allow homeowners to make changes themselves—adjusting scenes or adding new ones as needed. Plus, with most professional-grade systems, making these changes is straightforward and can often be done remotely by your designer or integrator.
For instance, as the seasons change or your lifestyle evolves, you may find that you need different lighting settings. Perhaps a scene like ‘Morning’ needs a bit more light in the winter, or your ‘Reading’ scene needs an extra lamp turned on.
In short, lighting control is about much more than flipping switches—it’s about enhancing how you live in your home. When designed and set up properly, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Smart Home Improvements for Winter
Matt Nimmons, Managing Director at CEDIA (Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association), trade body for the smart home sector, takes a look at how smart homes can help tackle the issues home owners face in the darker months.
With the nights drawing in, homes face more risks than the summer months. In the UK, domestic burglaries are more common in winter. In less extreme cases, our homes also risk costing us more due to poor insulation or inefficient heating and lighting systems. This is where an investment in smart technology can improve our quality of life – not just by keeping us safe, but warm and comfortable year-round.
From smart temperature control to energy efficiency and security, here are the best house smart home improvements you can make this winter.
Smart heating solutions
While it may be tempting to leave central heating running all day in winter, this could lead to heat loss and higher bills. A well-insulated home is a great place to start, particularly when
we consider that heat can escape from walls, roofs and gaps.
But to take this one step further, home automation gives us full temperature control. A smart thermostat has a range of uses, from basic heating and cooling control to even dehumidifying and ventilation. The key feature, however, is that it works remotely – meaning you can turn it on ready for when you are home, as long as you have an internet connection.
Further customisability comes in the form of scheduling. For example, you might preset your thermostat to turn on the heating for when you wake up in the morning or turn off when you head out to work. In the same vein, you can improve your quality of life with lighting devices like smart blinds. Time these to open in line with sunlight hours to feel more rested.
Zone the heating in your home or just save energy. Some brands promise up to 30% lower bills with smart temperature control, so a small investment in these heating systems really adds up.
Smart heating solutions
Consider insulation and energy efficiency. While smart thermostats are a great way to save energy, we can always do more. Lighting accounts for more than one-twentieth of home fuel consumption, so it’s important to conserve energy here.
Like automated blinds, you can optimise your smart lighting to come on based on pre-set timers. Other triggers (based on an IFTTT system) include motion sensors. This ensures lights aren’t needlessly running all day, particularly when we consider that there can be as few as six hours of daily sunlight in winter.
Some smart home hubs allow you to customise profiles. For example, you may set up a ‘morning mode’ for lights to greet you as you make breakfast. With these remote controls, lights only operate when you need them –saving you crucial pennies on energy bills.
Another way to save energy is through insulation. Draft excluders may not be the most technologically advanced investments, but they stop crucial heat escaping through doorways. For something more modern, smart window coverings like automated blinds keep heat in, while working with your circadian rhythms (sleep cycles).
Security enhancements for winter
Smart lighting may improve your sleep, but it’s also essential for security. Motion sensor-triggered outdoor lights serve as a deterrent for intruders. If you’re looking for enhanced security, you can invest in a Smart PIR (passive infrared sensor) system. This integrates with motion sensors as well as two-way audio and CCTV – helping to scare off and detect intruders.
Other simple systems include video doorbells. These serve multiple purposes – primarily, they show you who is approaching beforehand and store the footage. But you can also
use them to speak directly to visitors such as delivery teams – ideal if you’re away.
Smart home automation allows for 24/7 monitoring, depending on your security needs. The strongest systems offer threat detection alerts and can even call the emergency services. Coupled with CCTV, this provides comprehensive security for deterring intruders, alerting police and safeguarding your home.
Remember that secure homes are less likely to be targeted and may have a higher sale value. Whether you’re simply lighting up pathways for dark nights or monitoring your property, a smart solution has the answer.
Invest in better smart home improvements with CEDIA
Smart home improvements can serve you throughout the year – but investing during winter months will make all the difference. Whether you’re just looking to lower your carbon footprint, or need to secure your property, you’ll need the right installer.
Choose a CEDIA integrator for a brand-agnostic installation to suit your needs. We’ll guide you on the best products to keep your home safe and comfortable throughout the chilly months.

Smart Homes: Simplifying life, saving energy, and enhancing comfort
Victor
Alonso, Managing Director of the Real Smart Home, explains the life-enhancing and efficiency advantages of an easy-to-use smart home system.
In today’s fast-paced world, technology has seeped into every aspect of our lives, transforming the way we interact, communicate, and even live. Smart homes, a relatively recent innovation, are at the forefront of this technological revolution. By integrating different devices and systems, smart homes offer a level of convenience, efficiency and comfort that was unimaginable not too many years ago.
How smart homes work
At the core of a smart home is a central hub that connects and controls the different devices. This hub is like the ‘brain’ of the house and can interact with and control all the devices. Through this hub, homeowners can manage everything from lighting and thermostats to security cameras and entertainment systems.
Simplifying everyday life
Imagine a home that anticipates your needs, adjusts to your preferences, and saves you money. That’s the power of a smart home. By integrating various connected devices and systems, smart homes can streamline daily tasks, reduce energy consumption and enhance overall comfort.
For instance, imagine all your lights, heating, TVs and other appliances switching off automatically when you leave the house. Or a home security system that alerts you about any unusual activity, like a camera detecting a person in your garden or driveway, a fire alarm triggered, or a water leak, even when you’re miles away. And these are just a few examples of how smart homes can improve your life.
Saving energy and money
One of the most significant advantages of smart homes is their potential to save energy and reduce utility bills. Smart thermostats can learn your preferences and adjust temperatures accordingly, while smart appliances can optimise energy consumption based on usage patterns. Additionally, smart lighting systems can automatically turn off lights in unoccupied rooms, further reducing energy waste. All of this can be combined with smart energy tariffs, allowing the house to consume most of the energy in the cheapest periods of the day, which can improve the savings while consuming the same amount of energy (just at a different time). Activities that are not timecritical, like heating the hot water tank or putting on the dishwasher, washing machine, or dryer, are perfect for this.
The importance of local control
One key advantage of a welldesigned smart home is the local control. Unlike cloud-based systems, local control improves reliability and ensures uninterrupted operation, even during internet outages. It also protects your privacy by keeping data within your home and removes the dependency on the servers of a third-party company that might not be available or willing to keep the same prices for their services in the future.
Enhancing comfort and convenience
Beyond energy savings, smart homes can enhance overall comfort and convenience. For instance, smart speakers can control your home’s devices with voice commands, allowing you to enjoy hands-free operation, and that´s just the beginning. A properly configured smart home will react to events and preset rules so that talking to smart speakers is not required in most situations, and only needed
in exceptional circumstances. For instance, motion and presence sensors can automate lighting, eliminating the need for voice commands in most situations, so saying ‘Alexa, turn on the lights’ becomes a thing of the past.
Smart locks can provide remote access and security, while smart curtains can create the perfect ambience for relaxation or entertainment.
Increase the value of your home
In today’s competitive real estate market, having a smart home can significantly increase the value of your property and help it sell faster when you decide to move. As more buyers look for energy-efficient, technologically advanced homes, incorporating smart home features can make your property stand out from the competition.
Benefits for landlords
Adding a smart door lock to your property can help you manage
access and remove the dependency on physical keys. Adding sensors and smart appliances will help you get insights into how energy is used and avoid wasting it. These will also enhance the security of your property.
Tips for embarking on the smart home journey
If you’re considering transforming your home into a smart space, here are some essential tips to help you navigate the journey:
1. Assess Your Needs: Determine your priorities and goals. Are you looking to improve energy efficiency, enhance security, or create a more convenient living environment?
2. Prioritise compatibility and local control: Ensure that the devices you choose are compatible with each other and with your existing systems, and look for devices that offer local control, which means they are not relying on your internet connection to work.
3. Get advice from a professional installer: In the same way that you wouldn´t fix your car yourself when there is an issue, you shouldn´t embark on a DIY smart home journey unless you have the knowledge required to do it securely. This includes knowledge about networking, encryption,
communication protocols, best security practices, and more. Most smart home companies offer an initial consultation for free where you can get an idea of what options are available and a sense of the cost, so there is nothing to lose if you contact them and get some free advice.
4. Prioritise Security: Protect your data by choosing devices and platforms with robust security measures.
This sounds interesting; who can I contact to get
some advice?
There are multiple smart home companies ready to answer your questions, and we recommend getting information from different sources before making a decision.
At The Real Smart Home, we follow all the principles mentioned above, and we’re dedicated to helping you create a smart home that simplifies your life. Our platform offers a new approach to smart homes, focussing on compatibility and integration. We seamlessly integrate devices from all brands and ecosystems into a single platform, avoiding the need to replace expensive devices and future-proofing your home, ensuring any new device or technology available in the future will be compatible with the system. Our personalised 3D floor plan allows you to control all your devices from a simple user interface that everyone in the family will be able to use without any previous training.
By following these tips and seeking expert guidance, you can successfully transform your home into a smart, efficient, and comfortable living space. The benefits of a smart home extend far beyond convenience, offering energy savings, enhanced security, and a more enjoyable living experience.

Gorgeous Georgian Town House Gets Smart
Professional smart installation company Inspired Dwellings carried out this beautiful and technologically advanced renovation project on this sumptuous home. Take a gander at this opulent and high functioning townhouse.
Rob Sutherland, Managing Director at Inspired Dwellings, explains, “Our client restored a neglected Georgian townhouse in London’s Belgravia, part of a Grade II listed early 19th-century terrace. Spanning seven floors, the property retains its original layout with rooms such as a grand salon and formal dining room, which was critical for preserving its character and meeting listed building criteria.
“The main challenge was integrating state-of-the-art technology into the highly ornate design. This was achieved by blending old and new elements, including invisible plasteredin speakers, TVs concealed behind mirrors, and hand-painted CCTV cameras to match each room’s décor. The cinema room featured a handpainted motorised chinoiserie screen and matching speaker grills.”
The install team explain that unlike most contemporary refurbishments, the house retained its multi-room layout, necessitating individual room controls and switches. Over 70 keypads, each customised to the

The small cinema room required mounting the projector vertically, reflecting the image off a mirror to achieve the desired range.

The system was customised with distinct functionality for family and staff, including fingerprint recognition with individual schedules.
Budget considerations focused on investing in proven technology to minimise future replacements and impact on the custom décor. The design aimed to create the ultimate integrated home with subsystems tailored to the client’s needs, each with standard characteristics and unique customisations.

Storybook Home
Winner of the Best Integrated Home (Level 2) at the recent CEDIA Trade awards for the very best projects around, this smart home project by De Opera Domotica is a dream come true for the owners.
Deep in the Netherlands, where the gentle rustle of a nature reserve’s foliage blends into the realms of human habitation, a villa known as the Storybook Home merges ecological sensibilities with the forefront of technology. This residence is a showcase of how modern innovations can integrate seamlessly into natural aesthetics to forge a living space that is both technologically advanced and organically alluring. Crafted by the expertise of integrator De Opera Domotica, and envisioned by Architenbureau de Vries-Theunissen, with interiors by DESIGNA, this project has earned its recognition on the merit of integration and design alone.
The genesis of the Storybook Home was driven by a vision to construct a villa that would resonate as an integral part of its natural surroundings, as intrinsic as the trees and wildlife adjacent to it. For the client, his wife, their 18-year-old daughter, and their two dogs, the challenge was to embed sophisticated security, audio-visual and energy management systems while adhering to an ecological ethos. The design stipulated the exclusive use of natural materials and finishes, with a categorical exclusion of synthetic acoustic materials. This requirement led to pioneering approaches to acoustics, often pushing beyond traditional boundaries.
The villa’s architecture is a reflection of thoughtful design and meticulous planning. The basement houses technical rooms and a dedicated space for the dogs, a ground floor that merges effortlessly with the landscape, an upper floor that cleverly conceals technical equipment within or above the bedrooms, and a welcoming pool house complete with a swimming pool and jacuzzi. Every space in this home is crafted with purpose and precision. The oak beams in the attic presented a unique challenge, limiting space and necessitating ingenious solutions for the placement of equipment.
However, the project’s trajectory was not devoid of challenges. The onset of the pandemic resulted in the client and his family being locked down in Indonesia, delaying the project until the end of 2021. This interruption brought significant alterations upon their return. Originally, a wall and a large fabric folding door were planned to separate the cinema from the dining room. These were removed during construction to create an open space, introducing new challenges for audio and video performance. The seating area, initially destined to be filled with hammocks and bean bags, was transformed into a custom sofa arrangement, partially obstructing the speakers.
Security was a paramount concern for the client, who frequently travels to Indonesia. The solution was a robust, multi-faceted system that ensured unparalleled security during their absence. The system was designed to allow their daughter to host pool parties while restricting access to the rest of the house. Advanced monitoring of visitors and packages via cameras, coupled with an alarm system that activates if paths deviate from the main entrance, provided peace of mind. Additionally, a specialised ‘Dog Mode’ was incorporated, allowing the dog walking service to access the property without compromising
security. In case of an alarm, provisions were made for the dogs to roam freely, ensuring their safety and the security of the home.
The integration of technology within the Storybook Home is subtle yet profound. Motorised electric windows in the daughter’s bathroom and bedroom close automatically when the security system is armed. The removal of suspended ceilings in the bedrooms required innovative integration of heating, cooling and home automation equipment. Wireless curtains in the kitchen, controlled seamlessly from hidden units, epitomise the blend of technology and design.
All the technology in the home serves to make family life more enjoyable and harmonious
De Opera Domotica’s collaboration with Monitor Audio and other partners has ensured that every technological element of the home enhances its ecological and aesthetic values. This villa serves as a vivid example of what is achievable when cuttingedge technology is employed to complement and enhance ecological mindfulness, creating a living environment that is not only futuristic but also intimately connected to its natural setting.

The beauty of concealed home entertainment
Pure Theatre, experts in home cinema and Hi-Fi support products, introduce the fantastic world of concealed home entertainment.
As modern families embrace technology, homes also need to adapt to integrate this technology. Whether it be watching movies, streaming a favourite show, gaming or just listening to music, home entertainment should immerse you in the action. The problem which many come across is how to intelligently incorporate technology without ruining the aesthetics of their home. Luckily there is a solution: hide everything away.
No more unsightly TV
The average TV size has more than doubled in the last 20 years, with the average household now sporting a 50in TV. Many homeowners are finding that incorporating a huge screen into their rooms begins to ruin the desired aesthetics of the
space. Concealed screens allow you to achieve a huge screen of 100inch or even larger whilst giving you the ability to hide it all away and take back your room.
This concept centres around using motorised projector screens that retract back up into the ceiling. When
Equipment only moves into place when required
you are not watching anything the system is almost invisible, leaving just a small slit in the ceiling. More design freedom is achievable as screens are able to be placed where televisions wouldn’t be, such as in front of windows, doors or over mirrors or artwork on flat walls.
Incredible picture, discreetly
Hiding away your huge screen solves the main issue, but what can you use the system for? Today’s 4K projectors offer incredible picture quality with impressive dynamic ranges and colour accuracy. Hooked up to an AV receiver, you are able to play all of your favourite devices including TV boxes, media players, streaming sticks and games consoles.
Projectors are in themselves quite large but even this element can hide away with the use of a projector lift. These mechanisms recess into the ceiling so that your room can be completely uninterrupted when you are not using the system. Connected
together, the screen and projector lift can move with just one button press or voice command if using a control system.
Amazing sound with hidden speakers
Creating an immersive entertainment space is more than just visual. Sound has a huge impact on our emotional connection with what we are watching or listening to. New technology means that you are now able to achieve incredible sound with Dolby Atmos without bulky speakers on show. The latest conceal speakers have a wonderful surface which you can paint or paper over, allowing
for a recessed installation without impacting on sound quality. Speakers can be concealed in the wall and ceiling, allowing for a full surround sound system. Even the subwoofers can be concealed to achieve a completely concealed sound system.
Technology in any style of home
One of the beauties of a concealed entertainment system is that it can make technology accessible no matter what style of home you have. For those with ultra modern homes, a huge screen may not look out of place, but for those renovating period properties, integrating technology can be a little trickier.
Opting for a motorised screen, projector lift and speakers means that you can have a completely immersive entertainment system at the push of a button. Then if you want to use the room for other purposes it can all hide away, revealing a beautifully curated space.

Home Cinema AllianceBetter Together
Members of the Home Cinema Alliance (HCA), a group of experienced home cinema professionals dedicated to promoting and marketing specialist home cinema companies, explain why an experienced, dedicated home cinema installer is always the best option.
Melanie Malcolm, Operations Director, Bespoke Home Cinemas, Stuart Burgess, Owner/Director at Immersive Cinema Rooms and Owen Maddock, Owner of Cinemaworks, are all highly experienced operators in the world of home cinema and are also co-founders of The HCA. The group was set up to promote the skills and wonderful experiences created and delivered by the group’s members, all high-quality home cinema experts.
Melanie says, “Designing, building and installing a home cinema is a specialist endeavour. There’s no doubt that the firms who specialise completely in creating these rooms take it more seriously, have deeper experience and ultimately deliver a better result for you the customer.
“The thing is our customers generally don’t have unlimited budgets. However, the cinema rooms we
create are genuinely transformative enhancing the lives of the whole family. Our philosophy is, why not keep audio visual systems for spaces such as bedrooms, study etc system a bit simpler and more affordable and put more of your budget where you’re going to spend the most time, where you can all experience great content together. Home cinema systems often become everyone’s favourite room in the house.”
Owen explains, “When we complete a home cinema project, the feedback is always, ‘we’re always going in there, we watch everything in there, we use it all the time, sometimes I just go and sit there to chill out after work’.
“You do see some ‘unloved’ cinema rooms, but our members do not create rooms like that. This only happens if your provider didn’t
research your needs correctly. Our members assess the exact needs of each customer and project, creating the perfect solution for the space and what it will be used for. Engage with an HCA member and you are assured you are dealing with a trained and qualified specialist.
“The main risks are either poor design, where the system doesn’t perform properly, or doesn’t suit your lifestyle, or ‘under-specification’, where the performance level isn’t good enough for the room, so it doesn’t engage you in the content you have chosen to watch. If the room is designed and installed correctly, you will feel right inside the film or the box set, if you are a gaming fan, immersion is next level. This level of complete immersion and enjoyment is what all HCA members aim to deliver.”
Stuart explains a little more about the practical advantages of seeking out and engaging a an HCA member, “It’s a bit like builders - imagine a general builder offers new builds, extensions, groundworks, loft conversions, kitchens and bathrooms. Now imagine a different builder decided several years ago that they were really good at loft conversions, enjoyed them and so decided to become a loft conversion specialist. Who would you call for your loft conversion and who’s likely to do a better job? That’s where HCA members come in. We are specialists, have the skills to get the job done and we love what we do!”.
Connecting with the design and build communities
Stuart continues, “Most of our projects are part of a wider build, so there’s usually a designer onboard. I reached out recently to make HCA a BIID Partner (British Institute of Interior Design Industry), connecting our specialty with the best interior designers. From there we can offer
training and support and increase awareness around working with a dedicated specialist. We also have discussions ongoing with RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). For an individual member to join these associations can get expensive, but together we can share the costs.
“We’ve also recently joined CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association) as an industry related professional supplier member - we’ve been busy active CEDIA members for years, they do a great job, but they’re not a marketing
agency. We are. Ultimately HCA members are dedicated to ensuring great results for you and your family and are also highly experienced at working in tandem and close partnership with other skilled trades such as interior designers, architects and developers. HCA members can be searched for on our website by region, so take a look and see where your local expert is.”

The Privacy Trade-Off: Making Secure Smart Homes
Giles Sutton, smart home expert, installer and one of the key figures in CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association) the trade body for the smart home sector, explains how to ensure your smart home is a safe home.
Smart homes have transformed modern living, surging in popularity since the COVID-19 pandemic. With the touch of a button or sound of a voice, they offer comfort, efficiency and convenience. But for many, smart homes also raise concerns about data privacy and cybersecurity. Stories about hacked devices or behavioural data used for targeted ads have left some wary. Does embracing smart home technology mean sacrificing privacy? The good news is, with the right approach, you don’t have to compromise. A smarter choice for your smart home can offer both security and convenience.
What is a smart home today?
When you think of smart homes, you might picture gadgets—cameras, speakers, appliances and sensors—all connected to the internet. Increasingly, even everyday items like vacuums and fridges come equipped with Wi-Fi.
Most of these devices integrate with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, making ‘Works with Alexa’ a defining label for modern smart homes.
For millions, voice assistants are the entry point into smart living. Devices like Amazon Echo and Google Nest rose in popularity thanks to their low cost, innovative features, and easy setup. But the true value for tech companies isn’t in the sale of these devices—it’s in the data. Every command, query, or connected device feeds into a system that personalises ads and shares data across platforms.
Limited Benefits of Voice Assistants
Despite their widespread use, voice assistants play a surprisingly small role in smart home systems. A Deloitte report found that most users prefer controlling devices through smartphone apps (45%) or directly on
the device (18%), with only 17% using voice assistants regularly. They’re often limited to basic tasks like setting timers, checking the weather, or playing music.
Smart homes before big tech
What many don’t realise is that smart homes existed long before voice assistants. In the 1960s, motorised shades were already covering windows. By the 1980s, multiroom audio systems allowed for customisable sound throughout a house, and by the 1990s, whole-home lighting systems offered tailored mood settings.
These systems operated on closed networks without relying on the internet or cloud services. They offered the features we associate with smart homes today—like remote control of lighting or HVAC systems—while safeguarding privacy. No behavioural data was collected or shared.

Privacy-focused smart home solutions
Today’s professionally installed systems, from brands like Control4, Crestron and Lutron, continue this legacy of privacy and control. These systems run on secure, in-home networks, ensuring your data stays private. Unlike off-the-shelf gadgets that send constant streams of data to the cloud, professionally installed solutions prioritise privacy while delivering advanced functionality. Certified smart home professionals, also known as technology integrators, tailor these systems to meet your specific needs. They also install commercial-grade networking equipment to enhance security and prevent vulnerabilities. This reduces the risk of hackers accessing critical systems like lighting, HVAC, or security cameras.
Rethinking the role of voice assistants
Voice assistants have encouraged a piecemeal approach to smart homes, where consumers add devices one at
a time. While convenient, this method prioritises platform compatibility over homeowner needs. Each new device feeds into a growing data ecosystem, raising an important question: Who benefits more from your smart home—you or the platform?
Professional integrators view voice assistants as one of many options for homeowners to consider along with remote controls, touchscreens and apps, when it comes to controlling their technology.
Upgrade your smart home, not your risk
Smart homes don’t have to come with a privacy trade-off. By choosing professionally installed systems and working with trained integrators, you can enjoy a smart home experience that serves your needs—not a datacollecting platform’s goals. The next time you consider an upgrade, choose one that safeguards your privacy and your comfort.
Movie Night Magic
This stunning home cinema combines cutting-edge technology, expert system design and careful installation.
As part of an extensive renovation to an exceptional London home, awardwinning installation company Imagine This was commissioned to design and install a state-of-the-art private home cinema for a customer who demanded the very best in audiovisual performance. Understanding the requirements for this project, and the products that would be needed to deliver such a result, Imagine This selected products from the likes of Barco, Meridian and Trinnov, all big names in the world of home cinema and luxury audio visual systems.
The home was being lovingly refurbished to provide a London base for the client’s family. With meticulous planning, and an unrelenting eye for detail, the customer and his team were focussed on creating an elegant and lavish home, with all the modern benefits of the very best in home electronics.
The primary goal was to create an immersive, luxurious experience that surpasses the audio and visual quality of commercial cinemas. The client requested uncompromised audio quality with precise sound reproduction and support for multiple formats, including Dolby Atmos and high-resolution music playback.
Product Selection
Meridian Audio was selected as the speaker brand for this project, due to a reputation for delivering outstanding audio quality and innovative engineering. Known for their Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology and active loudspeaker designs, Meridian speakers offer supreme accuracy and performance.
The selected system components included three ultra-shallow Meridian DSP640.2 loudspeakers for the left, centre and right channels. These speakers were chosen for their powerful output, clarity, and ability to handle the dialogue and high-energy sound effects. To create a fully immersive Dolby Atmos experience, Meridian DSP320.2 loudspeakers were used for the surround and height channels. These models offer exceptional accuracy and seamless integration with the front channels. To provide an understated aesthetic, the height speakers were painted
with the ceiling fabric pattern and the rear speakers were mounted within bespoke artisan side-tables. Two Meridian DSW shallow depth, digital active subwoofers were installed to deliver deep, impactful bass.
“The Meridian speakers deliver crisp, clear dialogue, and a powerful, balanced low end, fully immersing the audience in music and movie soundtracks,” comments Guy Singleton, Managing Director of Imagine This. “The surround and height channels provide the enveloping sensation the client desired, making them feel as though they are truly in the middle of the action.”
To integrate all the digital active loudspeakers, Imagine This selected a Meridian Digital Theatre Controller, the 271. This high-resolution interface is equipped with Meridian’s (MHR)
High Resolution Audio output and a simple control interface for the Crestron home automation system which was also included in the wider renovation of the property. A Trinnov Altitude 16 processor was used for the cinema processing, providing a Dolby Atmos immersive audio experience.
A 4K Barco Balder projector and acoustically transparent bespoke screen were installed to complement the audio setup with a highperformance visual experience. To provide a discrete solution for the projector, the Balder was installed within a in-ceiling mount, which lifts the projector away into the ceiling when not needed. The mount was painted with the ceiling fabric pattern, to ensure that it was unobtrusive when not in use.
The room was also treated with acoustic materials to optimise sound performance and Trinnov’s Optimiser system was employed to finetune the system, compensating for acoustical anomalies in the space.
Precise Installation
The installation was carried out in close collaboration with the client’s interior designer, cabinet maker and building contractor. The Imagine This team carefully specified the components to ensure that the technology complemented the aesthetics of the room, whilst not compromising on the technical performance. Every detail, from the placement of the seating to the speaker axes, was meticulously planned to create an exceptional experience for all listeners.
This home cinema space embodies comfort and sophistication, centred around an unusually constructed sunken seating area, thoughtfully designed to immerse viewers in a luxurious and intimate environment.
“This exceptional project showcases how Barco, Meridian and Trinnov products can be the cornerstone of a luxury home
cinema installation,” concludes Guy. “The combination of cutting-edge technology available via DbM, our expert system design, and careful installation resulted in a cinema that not only meets but exceeds the client’s requirements for both performance and aesthetics. This project stands as a testament to what is possible when the highest
standards in audio engineering, system design and expert installation come together.”

Magnificent Belgravia Mews
for a customer moving their family
A client moving from Australia was looking for a property in London that met the standards they were
accustomed to. After finding the perfect property, they went about turning it into a beautiful home with
the help of a variety of professionals. Working with architects, interior designers and a home automation and AV specialist (Link It Solutions), the homeowners wanted very specific quality and style to match the value and standards of a home in Belgravia.
They particularly wanted a smart home system that enhanced their daily lives.
One of the requirements was that the system, although sophisticated and dealing with a complexity of needs, had an easy-to-use interface and was completely intuitive. Reliability, security and entertainment were also important factors that came to play in the decision on what system to use.
The Smart Solution
The homeowners had used the Nice Home Management system in the past and were really impressed with it and wanted it as the core system running their home. After discussing with a variety of smart home installers, Link It Solutions were selected due to their proficiency with the Nice Home Management system, having installed multiple systems over the years.
Steve Itoje, Director, Link It Solutions, says, “In close consultation with the homeowners, we embarked on designing and implementing a smart integrated solution that integrates the multi room audio, multiple TVs, and a sophisticated heating and cooling system.
“Nice has been ahead in the industry when it comes to integrated surveillance security systems. With the Nice integrated CCTV system, the client needs only one app to watch live CCTV video, using the same app to download or review archived footage. There is also the intelligent analysis that differentiates between people,
vehicles and general motion natively in the Nice home management system.
Steve adds, “For lighting we installed and integrated a Rako-based lighting solution, the combination of value for money, ease of use, reliability of the Rako system and the aesthetics of the switches made Rako an easy choice for both the homeowners and the interior designers. We carried out our usual ‘day in the life of a homeowner exercise’ when deciding the locations of switches and the creation of various lighting scenes during the Rako smart lighting system design.
“Following numerous consultations with the building contractor, interior designers and the meticulous installation, we tailored the system to the homeowners’ specific requirements whilst also being sympathetic to the architecture, interior design and location.”
For the audio solutions in the home the install team chose products from Origin Acoustics and Gallo Acoustics, two luxury AV speaker makers only available to smart home installers.
Steve enthuses, “The result is a bespoke, modern envy. A delicious blend of design and technology providing a comfortable and enjoyable home for our client. The home meets the standards of its value and location and the homeowners are in love with its ease of use and reliability. The security system integrates the door entry, CCTV and alarm in one easy to use app, allowing the homeowners
access locally and away from home, with the same user interface on the phone, wall pads or remotes.
“This project showcases the seamless marriage between technology, user experience and design. Our solution highlights not just the sophistication of the technologies implemented but also our commitment to creating spaces that resonate with clients’ values, vision and expectations.
“By cooperation and working closely with the architect, interior designer and building contractors; we have been able to give the homeowners a solution that is greater than the sum of its parts.” More Information

The Power of Combining Smart Lighting with High-Performance AV Experiences
Joe Carri, Director at Prestige Audio, one of the UK’s most respected award-winning home cinema and smart home specialists, explains how light and entertainment experiences combine to create something truly wonderful.
In smart homes, technology is not just about convenience—it’s about creating immersive and memorable experiences. Skilled smart home and AV installers can integrate smart lighting with high-performance AV systems, transforming everything from home cinemas to music listening spaces. This combination of lighting and entertainment not only enhances the functionality of a space but also enriches the overall experience for users.
Mood-Enhancing Spaces
One of the main areas where smart lighting makes a significant impact is in home cinema installations. A well-designed home cinema is more than just a screen and speakers—it’s a complete sensory environment.
Lighting plays a vital role, especially in setting the scene before the movie begins. As people enter the cinema room, soft, ambient lighting helps them find their seats, grab snacks and settle in comfortably. This welcoming atmosphere is a key part of the pre-movie experience.
Once everyone is ready, the lighting transitions, slowly dimming to build excitement and anticipation as the movie starts. This isn’t just about practicality; it’s about setting the mood. If the film is paused for any reason, whether to take a break or get refreshments, smart lighting can come back up to a comfortable level. This ensures there’s enough light to move around safely without disrupting the cinematic environment. These lighting transitions happen seamlessly, making the movie-watching experience even more immersive.
Lighting to Elevate Music
Smart lighting also transforms how we listen to music. While music affects mood, lighting plays an equally important role. Combining these two elements can create an environment where listeners fully lose themselves in the sound. For instance, dimming the lights while playing a favourite album creates a focused, intimate atmosphere. Some homeowners might prefer a more dynamic experience, where the lighting reacts in time with the music pulsing, shifting and enhancing the emotional connection to the sound.
These ideas extend to multipurpose media rooms as well. Coordinating lighting with what’s on screen or with the music playing can elevate the experience of concerts, sporting events, and more. Imagine
watching a live concert in a media room where the lighting washes the room in colours that match the performance. This feature can make it feel as though you’re at the venue. The same is true for movie nights, where a well-designed lighting system can enhance specific scenes or help viewers become fully immersed in the action.
‘Nightclubs at Home’
A growing trend in high-end smart homes is the ‘nightclub at home’ experience. By combining powerful sound systems with carefully programmed lighting, homeowners can transform spaces into vibrant party environments. Installers can set up lighting that syncs with the music, creating a full sensory experience that rivals some of the best nightclubs—without leaving home.
Skilled AV and smart home installers combine technology, design, and creativity to bring these experiences to life. By integrating smart lighting with high-performance AV systems, homeowners not only gain functional solutions but also spaces that inspire, entertain and elevate enjoyment. Whether it’s watching a movie, listening to music, or hosting a party, lighting and AV work together to create something truly special.

Multi-room music systems open up a huge range of entertainment experiences throughout the home
The Joy Of Multi-Room Audio!
Mike Bonnette, Product Director for Connected Distribution, a supplier of high-performance music and audio playback equipment to professional installers of multi-room music systems, demystifies the subject.
At its most basic, multi-room music is about having the flexibility to play the same, or different sound in separate rooms or zones within your house. If this is something you want to achieve in your home, there are a number of ways of achieving this to suit your particular circumstances, building construction and requirements. Generally, we refer to the solutions as centralised or decentralised systems, and there are advantages and disadvantages to each. So, let’s take a look at each one.
Centralised systems
Centralised multi-room audio consists of a specially designed ‘distributed audio’ amplifier that can send a signal to loudspeakers installed in each of the zones within your home (we refer to zones instead of rooms as a zone could be made up of multiple rooms, for example in an open plan house). Connected to it are your audio sources – such as a streamer for your
music from Spotify or other streaming service, a radio tuner (DAB or FM) or maybe the audio output from your Sky Q box if you want the TV sound to come from your in-room speakers.
The distributed audio amplifier is often situated in specially created cabinetry, existing furniture or sometimes in an equipment rack located in a utility space in the home. The aim is to have the equipment out of site and provide control via wall mounted and hand-held devices such a smart phone or dedicated remote. From the keypad you can select the source you want to listen to in that area and adjust the volume to your liking, with some systems you can even Bluetooth to the keypad as a local source from your phone. It is also
possible to control the entire system using a dedicated app on a phone or keypad – choosing what plays in what room and even combining them into what’s called ‘party mode’ to play the same content all around the house.
To install such a system you’ll need the help of a specialist installation company as they require careful planning and programming. It’s necessary to run ethernet cable (CAT6) from the location of the distributed audio amplifier to each wall mounted keypad, and speaker cables to each room. For this reason, it is often easier to install a centralised system during the construction or renovation of a property. But being a hard-wired solution, it is the most reliable – we all know how Wi-Fi can drop out!
Centralised systems, such as a Russound MCA-88 multi-zone controller amplifier, can provide audio from up to eight sources to eight separate zones. It can even be scaled to 48 zones using multiple units, making it useable in even the very largest of properties.
De-centralised systems
A much easier solution for use in existing properties, the de-centralised approach uses a streaming amplifier in each zone – think Sonos or one of the more specialised brands. It is hard-wired to the speakers, so you still need to run speaker cables, but these only need to go the short distance from the in-room amplifier, not from the central equipment room, which makes installation much easier. Most people run these on Wi-Fi, but if you have an ethernet network in your house it is always better to connect them this way as wires don’t drop out like Wi-Fi can!
They are generally only app controlled, although some do also work with keypads and can be
used just like a centralised system, with each room playing something different or combined into the party mode. They provide access to most of the popular streaming services and often include Bluetooth, Apple Airplay2 and Chromecast and the ability to work with voice control, so they are very versatile.
Some products, such as the Russound MBX-Amp, can also be connected to the TV in the room to provide much better-quality sound than the built-in TV speakers. As soon as the TV is switched on it automatically outputs the sound through the speakers and then reverts to being a streamer once the TV is off.
Installation is a much easier process than a centralised system and, with a little knowledge of networks and audio, it is possible
to install such a system yourself. However, we would always recommend you use a trained installer to ensure everything is done to the best standard and the installation is covered by a warranty.
Whichever solution you go for, multi-room audio is a very convenient and discreet way of providing entertainment around your house, without the need for piles of Hi-Fi electronics and speakers, plus it gives the flexibility to play whatever source material you want, wherever you want it – in one room or throughout the whole house – at the touch of a button.

Network Essentials For The Best Home Entertainment
Audio expert and luxury audio visual industry veteran, Alan Ainslie, Managing Director of Audiophile Digital Music Masters, explains why the best home entertainment experiences need a strong home network.
Most people would think that as long as their home network streams content to their TVs, allows the kids to watch YouTube and enables Alexa to tell you that your shopping is arriving shortly, then it is working and up to scratch. In many cases, this would be the case, but were you to want to stream music to a half decent
audio system and/or watch high-definition TV on a big display, then you would want to achieve the optimal performance, wouldn’t you?
Let’s face it, if you are looking to stream music via a discreet audio system, such as in-ceiling or in-wall speakers, within your home, you will want it to deliver the very best
performance capable. To achieve this, your network plays a much larger role than you might think, as regardless of the fact that it might well be ‘working’, the reality is that even a simple residential network can quickly become complex and cluttered, due to both wired and one or more Wi-Fi networks competing for bandwidth. Ultimately, your audio devices will only perform at the level of the delivered data, so if this is compromised in any way, so will the performance.
Let’s start with a simple statement: To get the best audio performance over a network, a wired network must be used. Controversial to many, but ask any audio expert and they would agree. Albeit that a good Wi-Fi signal can be generated around the home to deliver huge amounts of data quickly, audio and video data is by far the most sensitive to being impacted by a poor performing network.
Our home cinemas and smart home installations go beyond just amazing 4K picture and immersive Dolby Atmos sound. We design personalised theater experiences that prioritise your comfort and enjoyment. This includes installing the perfect lighting, comfortable seating, room acoustic treatments, and an intuitive control system from Savant, Crestron, or Control4 – and that’s just the beginning.

As well as having to compete against significantly larger data files for bandwidth, audio and video devices also have to compete with additional devices jumping on and off the network, all of which can have an effect on the integrity of the stream, which will reduce performance.
So now we have established that it is better to run audio and video over a wired network, we can improve performance further by using a specially designed managed Switch, such as a Melco S100. A normal Switch, such as in the back of the router or even bought as a high-performance audio router for a few hundred quid is NOT managed - this means that all data on all ports is sent to every device on the network, which is not what you want to achieve the best AV performance. A Switch designed specifically for this application treats AV data with respect and protects the connected AV devices from being flooded with unwanted data from other services. The result is simply much better AV performance, even from streaming
services. The beauty of using a managed Switch like the S100 is that it is a plug-and-play solution, with no prior networking knowledge required to set it up. Additional improvements include system stability by managing DLNA control in conjunction with the Router and the Wi-Fi. This means that sensitive data, such as music and video, can pass over the network without compromise, improving performance.
A further way to enhance performance is to isolate the audio connection to the network. In a nutshell, residential network wiring acts like a big antenna, collecting garbage and interference from PV panels, TV switch mode power supplies, domestic appliances etc. Yes, using the latest spec screened Cat 6 cable can improve things, especially for a new build or renovation, but, as up until recently, most houses were pre-wired with unscreened network cable, and air bound interference can cause significant performance issues. The trick is to use fibre connectivity, as
electrical interference cannot travel on fibre. What could be seen as a black art is made super simple by complete kit solutions such as ADOT, which would be connected between the main network and the audio system. By offering total isolation, the kit rids the connection of any interference, offering additional performance gains to the audio and video.
So in practise, the perfect audio and video installation would take a feed from the home network, run through an ADOT into a dedicated managed switch (Melco S100) and then onto the AV system. The performance improvements are quite obvious, even for smaller audio installations. But don’t just take our word for it. For a relatively small investment, try it for yourself. We feel you will be very pleasantly surprised and your AV system performance will perform to the level it was intended.

The Beauty of Light and Shade
Ryan Sheppard, Director of KNX Ireland, a distributor of design-led building automation solutions, explains how intelligent lighting and shading can transform your home.
Smart Lighting is not a new concept, it has been around for decades with demand higher than ever and fuelled by several core factors including convenience, delivering control of your lighting from mobile app, voice assistant and/or motion detection. Systems also offer improved security as they can simulate presence whilst away by replicating your usual interactions with lighting inside and out of your home. Scene setting is a very popular feature, creating lighting scenes for different tasks such as reading, watching a movie or hosting guests. With energy saving high on the agenda, automating your lighting with motion detection or other timed features is also very popular. .
Smart choices
Most homes in the UK feature some form of lighting control whether it be a simple Wi-Fi plug, smart bulb or a professional lighting control solution such as ‘KNX’. The importance of a professional solution cannot be underestimated, with KNX offering a holistic approach to control of all lighting types but also shading, heating, cooling, audio visual and more. Furthermore, the open-source standard of KNX is supported by over 500 manufacturers who produce more than 8000 certified KNX products catering to both functionality and aesthetics.
The demands of modern control continue to drive innovation with advanced functionality such as ‘Human Centric Lighting’ (HCL). The basic principle of HCL is to improve mood through altering of the colour and intensity of light over the course of the day, otherwise imitating a natural light environment. The entire process of HCL can be automated through solutions such as KNX.
With natural light being as important as artificial light, architects are keen to design properties with glass facades that although aesthetically beautiful, presents the issue of overheating due to solar radiation. This fact has been the major driving factor in the motorised shading industry with manufacturers producing wireless and wired solutions for internal shades, external shades and curtains.
Through a professional shading control solution, it is possible to carry out a function known as ‘Sun Tracing’ that uses a combination of calculated and recorded data to trace the path of the sun through the sky. Shading motors will in turn respond dynamically to deflect solar radiation in an effort to maintain the desired room climate or at least limit room overheating from solar gain. For roller shades, this response is a simple raise/lower whilst Venetian type shades offer the ability to raise, lower and tilt the slats therefore allowing natural light into the room whilst carrying out a climate related function.
Sun Shading doesn’t need to happen inside the property, the same methodology can be applied to externally mounted Venetian Shades and even awnings. By deflecting solar radiation outside the building, the glass doesn’t get the chance to heat up and the effects of solar gain are even less so.
Of course, the benefits of sun shading in the summer months can be made somewhat equal in the winter months by allowing solar gain to heat a room during the day and trap generated heat by night. In summary, automated sun shading is not just for convenience but caters to reduce running costs of your Heating and Cooling Systems.
At KNX Ireland, we work with architects, designers and engineers to design and specify quality solutions for residential, commercial and industrial projects.
