A RAY OF HOPE!

EI was recently watching a repeat of a Ray Mears programme that focused on survival situations after accidents –shipwrecks etc., and also the ability to live in hostile places where others cannot. The one thing that all the people and characters featured in these stories have in common is a positive mental outlook. Maintaining a positive mental outlook can be applied to business and personal life. Sure, it is sometimes hard but it has scientifically proven benefits like clearer analytical thinking and inspiring others around you.

The ability to maintain a positive mental attitude is not just an abstract concept but a survival tool. Time and again, those who endure extreme situations, from being stranded in the wilderness to navigating economic downturns, cite optimism as a key factor in their resilience. This does not mean ignoring difficulties or pretending that everything is fine when it is not. Instead, it is about adopting a mindset that focuses on solutions, opportunities and the belief that challenges can be overcome.

Scientific research backs this up. Studies have shown that positive thinking can lower stress levels, improve cardiovascular health and enhance problem-solving abilities. In business, a leader or staff member who remains positive, even in the face of adversity, can set the tone for the whole team. A workplace culture infused with optimism is also more likely to foster innovation, motivation and collaboration.

This mindset is particularly relevant to our industry. The AV and smart home sector is constantly evolving, bringing both opportunities and challenges. Whether it is supply chain disruptions, changing customer demands or emerging technologies, there are always obstacles to navigate. However, viewing these as opportunities to adapt and innovate rather than insurmountable problems can make all the difference.

Practical steps can be taken to cultivate a positive outlook. One method is reframing challenges as learning experiences. Rather than seeing a project setback as a failure, view it as a chance to refine processes and improve future outcomes. Surrounding yourself with positive influences, whether colleagues, industry peers or even motivational content, can also help reinforce an optimistic mindset.

Another crucial but sometimes overlooked element is gratitude. Regularly taking stock of achievements, no matter how small, can provide perspective and counterbalance any tendency to focus on negatives. This does not mean ignoring genuine issues but rather ensuring that setbacks do not overshadow progress.

In essence, maintaining a positive mental outlook is a powerful tool in both business and life. It sharpens decisionmaking, boosts resilience and creates an environment where people thrive. In our sector, where change is constant, the ability to stay optimistic and adaptable is invaluable and of course, more enjoyable too! So, the next time you face a challenge, take a leaf out of the survivalist’s book –keep a positive mindset and you may just find the solutions you need.

AWE APPOINTED AS UK DISTRIBUTOR FOR KORDZ

AWE, specialist distributor to the custom install industry, has been appointed as a UK distributor for Kordz, a global player in professional-grade connectivity designed for integrators.

Kordz says it takes a unique approach to connectivity, driven by a team of former technicians in a process it calls ‘Kordzification’. Before designing products, Kordz identifies onsite challenges that could slow down progress, impact profitability or lead to failures and callbacks. These insights are used to develop solutions that prevent potential problems before they arise. Materials also play a crucial

role, with resilience, durability, flexibility, purity and pull tolerance all key considerations.

Stuart Tickle, Managing Director at AWE, said, “In a crowded market, finding the right professional cable brand that understands the needs of installers isn’t easy. This is why we are delighted to introduce Kordz to our portfolio, a brand that stands out by delivering on every aspect of our customers’ needs – with robust, fast and effective products that ensure optimum performance alongside ease of installation and use. Using advanced manufacturing techniques and highgrade machinery, Kordz’ production process is optimised to prevent inconsistencies and ensure tooling accuracy and cycle rates. Sophisticated soldering methods ensure uniformity and robustness while removing excess solder to deliver consistent, high-quality products.

James Chen, Managing Director of Kordz, added, “We are delighted to announce AWE as our newest distributor, expanding Kordz’ presence with some of the top dealers in the UK market. The survey, which asked over 300 tradespeople who had experienced workplace injury about the impact of workplace injuries and illness revealed that half of respondents had lost income or a contract as a result of their injury.

Of those asked, 35% miss one-to-two weeks of work a year due to work-related sickness or accidents. Based on the average day rate of £238, those that have had to take up to two weeks off work would be losing over £2,380 annually.

The study also explored the maximum amount of time tradespeople have had to take off due to an injury or illness, with the most common answer (23%) being four months. Based on the same day rate, those that had to take four months off for an injury could have lost up to £20,508 of income in that year.

Despite the risk of injury – and accompanying income loss – more than four in 10 tradespeople reported not having insurance to protect them against accidents.

As well as personal cost, the economic cost of workplace injury and ill health in the construction sector was estimated at £1.3 billion for the year 2021/22, according to Health and Safety England (HSE) data.

Faulty equipment, lack of PPE and poor site safety regulations are to blame for most injuries

The survey also explored the most common causes of workplace injuries for tradespeople, with 44% of tradespeople reporting that ‘faulty equipment or tools’ was the reason for their injuries in the workplace, whilst other reasons given were ‘Lack of PPE’ (38%) and ‘Poor safety regulations on site’ (36%).

41% of respondents who had experienced an injury reported that it was as a result of a third party (such as a co-worker), whilst a fifth of respondents reported not always taking the necessary health and safety measures at work, potentially putting themselves at risk of harm.

The most common causes of workplace injuries to tradespeople:

• Faulty equipment or tools 44%

• Lack of PPE 38%

• Poor safety regulations on site 36%

• Personal mistake 29%

• Mistake or fault of others 16%

• Injured while handling, lifting or carrying 13%

• Not adhering to health and safety regulations 12%

• Weather conditions 11%

• Slips, trips or falls on same level 10%

• Falls from a height 6%

THE ORIGIN OF GREAT AUDIO PARTNERSHIPS

Custom AV Distribution showcases the company’s blossoming relationship with innovative speaker-maker and industry trailblazer Origin Acoustics.

In the ever-evolving landscape of audio technology, strategic partnerships play a pivotal role in delivering exceptional products to consumers. A recent collaboration that exemplifies this synergy is between Origin Acoustics, the renowned manufacturer of highquality architectural speakers, and Custom AV Distribution (CAVD), a leading distributor of residential audio-visual products in the UK. This partnership was created to deliver a significant milestone for both companies and enhances

the UK audio market through CAVD’s new dealer store and dedicated dealer training programmes.

THE GENESIS OF ORIGIN ACOUSTICS

Origin Acoustics’ roots trace back to the early 1980s when its founders were amongst the pioneers of the concept of architectural audio.

The company introduced the first in-wall speaker, revolutionising audio integration in

living spaces. This innovation set the stage for advancements in the industry. In 2014, reunited with his original partners, Jeremy Burkhardt launched Origin Acoustics with a line of speakers aimed at redefining the category. With a mission to disrupt and innovate, the engineering team looked to reset the standard for architectural speakers, focusing on premium sound through in-wall, in-ceiling and outdoor solutions. Their products feature advanced technologies, such as the Director Series’ pivoting drivers for customisable sound direction and the Bollard outdoor speakers, blending performance with landscape design.

A PILLAR IN AV DISTRIBUTION

CAVD has established itself as a cornerstone in the UK’s audio-visual sector. Specialising in the trade-only supply of residential architectural AV products, CAVD offers comprehensive support services to custom installers across the UK. The company’s commitment to reliability, value, ease of use and high performance has made CAVD a trusted partner for integrators seeking top-tier products and seamless system synergy.

Dealers celebrate new relationships with Origin Acoustics
Jeremy Burkhardt, Co-Founder, Origin Acoustics

A SYNERGISTIC PARTNERSHIP

In July 2024, Origin Acoustics appointed CAVD as its exclusive UK distributor, marking a significant transition after a decade-long partnership with Invision UK. This move reflects both companies’ ambition to elevate Origin Acoustics’ presence in the UK market. Jose Coelho, International Business Director at Origin Acoustics, expressed gratitude towards Invision and welcomed CAVD as the new partner. Jamie Pullen, Director of CAVD, echoed this enthusiasm, stating that Origin Acoustics’ trust in them reflects the ambition and drive of everyone at CAVD.

THE NEW CAVD DEALER STORE AND TRAINING PROGRAMMES

To celebrate and facilitate this partnership, CAVD has unveiled a new dealer store showcasing Origin Acoustics products. Located in Marlow, the CAVD showroom offers integrators and clients an opportunity to experience the superior sound quality and design of Origin Acoustics’ offerings.

In addition to the showroom, CAVD has introduced comprehensive dealer training programmes, ensuring that integrators have the knowledge and expertise to install and configure Origin Acoustics products optimally. These training sessions cover product specifications, installation techniques and advanced system integration design. By providing hands-on learning experiences either at the CAVD facility or at the integrator’s premises, CAVD ensures that dealers can offer the best solutions to their clients, enhancing customer satisfaction and product performance.

The dealer training programme reinforces the partnership’s commitment to quality and market disruption, equipping professionals with the tools they need to succeed in the competitive AV industry.

WHY THIS PARTNERSHIP MATTERS

The alliance between Origin Acoustics and CAVD is more than a business arrangement; it is a fusion of shared values and a commitment to excellence, say the partners. Origin Acoustics’ legacy of innovation and market disruption aligns with CAVD’s dedication to providing integrators with reliable, high-performance products. This partnership has been created to ensure UK consumers have access to cutting-edge audio solutions, supported by a distributor that prioritises customer satisfaction and support.

LOOKING AHEAD

As the audio industry continues to evolve, the partners say that alliances like Origin Acoustics and CAVD set the standard for

how manufacturers and distributors can work together to deliver exceptional value to both integrators and consumers.

Jamie Pullen, Director, CAVD, concludes, “With a shared vision and a commitment to excellence, this collaboration is poised to redefine the UK audio experience, bringing unparalleled sound quality and innovative solutions to homes and businesses across the region.

“The partnership between Origin Acoustics and CAVD, highlighted by the launch of our new dealer store and training programmes, represents a significant advancement in the

UK’s audio landscape. It combines the rich history and innovative spirit of Origin Acoustics with CAVD’s distribution expertise and customer-centric approach, promising a harmonious future for audio enthusiasts and professionals alike.”

TFC: INSTALLER SPOTLIGHT

This month we focus on Iain Martin, designer and installer of ellenor hospice’s brand new cinema room.

This is the first in a new series of articles where we look at the work that goes on behind the scenes for a Together for Cinema installation. Providing completely free cinema rooms for UK-based charities is not just about sourcing equipment; hours of teamwork happen behind the scenes to ensure the staff and patients of each charity get exactly what they need from their new facilities.

Day to day, superstar Together for Cinema volunteer, Iain Martin manages iCubed, the home cinema company he founded with his wife in 2015. iCubed is based in Essex and is well known for exquisitely designed cinema rooms and smart home systems. With over 28 years of experience in the AV industry, Iain is passionate about the power of cinema and is a proud advocate. He used this passion and expertise to the fullest when he supported Together for Cinema with the design and installation of their 50th cinema room. The recipient was ellenor, a children’s hospice in Gravesend, Kent. This is not the first time Martin has supported Together for Cinema, in the past he has also been a Silver Level Charitable Partner.

“Not many people get to experience the amazing feeling of having a huge screen and fantastic sound in the comfort of their own home, so bringing that luxury to somewhere like ellenor is a real privilege,” Iain explains. “The kids can’t always get out to a cinema. They don’t often get the same sort of family time as other children because so much time goes to their medical care. Families can go into rooms like ellenor’s and experience a completely different environment from their usual one. We got involved so we could knowingly make an impact, and it was definitely worth it.”

Installers are involved early in the process, meeting with the staff at the hospice or care setting and getting to know what they require. Each venue is different, so understanding what the hospice hopes for from their new room is the first step in realising the brief. For ellenor, it was clear they needed the room to be a fantastic cinema for patients, families and staff, but versatile enough to be used for meetings, artsand-crafts sessions, and provide a welcoming space for staff gatherings. Delivering this sort of space would usually come at a prohibitively

high cost for a hospice or care centre, so ellenor hospice was delighted to be the 50th charity that has benefitted from a Together for Cinema donation. It’s not just the hospice that benefits though, there are many benefits for the installation team, too, as Iain continues.

“Selfishly, it felt great to do!” he recalls. “It was really heart-warming; kids go in there and the first thing they do is smile. I would recommend the whole process to any AV installer, it just feels so right. When the patients get to experience a beautiful room and enjoy a movie safely, it really tugs at your heart strings.”

Iain is no stranger to making an impact before working with Together for Cinema’s Ian Morrish – he worked to deliver another cherished cinema room for a charity in Colchester, providing end of life care for elderly residents. The hospice had been left a legacy donation and wanted to provide an experience for patients that would truly honour their generous patron but, as Iain explains, it hadn’t been as easy as they’d hoped.

“They had tried many other AV companies, but hadn’t found the right partners,” Iain recalls. “I was really touched by their story. In 2022, we got involved and managed to pull in a few favours. We spoke to all our suppliers to see what they could do for the charity. My brother even helped out and we managed to create a great room for them for much less than cost value and now it’s one of the most popular rooms in the whole place. It’s brilliant.”

There are many considerations to a project such as ellenor’s, but his industry experience meant Iain could fit the planning and adaptations for working in a care-giving facility alongside his iCubed business commitments.

“It’s not just making sure the room is accessible with things like ramps and handrails in place, so to keep the timescale as short as possible I prepped everything off-site which meant we could complete the bulk of the work in just three days,” Iain says. “Luckily, I have some amazing contacts who were all delighted to help out with the ellenor project. Alex Farmer of Farmer Electrical was only too happy to help install the electrics. Roddy Abbot’s company, Cinema Build Systems, supplied all of the fabric and tracking for the room. In a setting like ellenor, health and safety are paramount, so having knowledgeable people like Alex and Roddy by your side is key to a successful outcome.”

Knowing that the work you have done is bringing a moment of family fun and escapism to people who really deserve it has left Iain with a real sense of achievement. Completing projects like these requires a great deal of teamwork, but as he pushes into 2025, Iain is grateful for the experience and is excited to see what iCubed will do next.

“I would definitely encourage any AV installer to get involved with something like this,” Iain concludes. “Day-to-day we supply luxury items, especially in the residential market. Cinema rooms are a niche product that not everyone can afford, so knowing you can bring a reason to smile to someone who really needs it feels great!”

If hearing Iain’s story has left you wanting to know more about how you can get involved, please email Ian Morrish at Together for Cinema to find out more. ian@togetherforcinema.co.uk.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME?

Our trade-focused reviewer Richard Stevenson takes a listen to the Meridian Ellipse.

In a world full of affordable one-box streaming speakers, Meridian’s unique Ellipse stands out. Not least because, compared to models like the Sonos 5 or Bluesound Pulse 2i, it’s neither a box nor relatively affordable. It is, however, rather special.

Aesthetically, the Ellipse frontage is a 41cm wide ellipse (…see what they did with the name

there?) with a curvy and well-rounded rear (stop tittering at the back...). The price is a formidable £1,900.

That is a punchy price point, yet this is Meridian; a brand famed for unique design, wizard-level digital engineering, and acoustic performance that can make even gnarly old audio reviewers reach for the cheque book. See

our DSP9 review for the proof of that pudding. Like the DSP9 the Ellipse concept comes straight out of Meridian’s Extreme Engineering Programme, an ongoing R&D initiative at the forefront of the brand’s design philosophy.

The Ellipse’s new R2 Electronics Platform and all-encompassing Precision Sonic Transport concept have been trickled down from the brand’s full-size DSP-equipped speakers and optimised for this small speaker’s shape, driver complement and unique cabinet construction and materials. That construction and the notinsignificant weight make the Ellipse feel like the best-built small speaker on the market.

The industrial design is far from merely aesthetic, though. The shape minimises internal standing waves, reduces distortion and contributes to a cleaner audio output. The metal grille with elliptical holes is a nice touch and the three legs have tripod stability and nonslip rubber feet. There are boldly illuminated touch controls on top, should your phone have slipped down the back of the sofa. A choice of two optional Meridian remotes are available for terminally button-centric customers. They will still need the Meridian app for set-up and twiddles like the DSP controls.

While the Ellipse offers Bluetooth, analogue, optical digital and USB-C inputs, the real magic happens when streaming over WiFi or Ethernet cable. On the LAN, it has direct integration with AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect in full, glorious hiresness (with the right material). Should you have put in a Roon-based audio system for the main installation, the Ellipse is Roon Ready or can be used as a UPNP device directly from a PC or similar.

Out of the box, the Ellipse has a solid suite of third-party control drivers written and supported. These include integration with control systems from Crestron Home, Control 4, RTI and Elan. There is also a concealed IR input for use with either of Meridian’s optional remote controls or for alternative IR emitter control systems like Demopad.

The Meridian App has a familiar feel, with features much like the DSP speakers, including many of its bigger sibling’s processing features such as Image Focus, giving you very precise

positioning of the central image even if you are slightly off-axis. The effect is not quite as mind-boggling as with Meridian’s stereo speakers (where the imaging literally sounds like someone has shifted both speakers to the left or right) but it still works.

There is also a new Bass & Space feature that applies Ellipse-specific frequency and signal tweaking. This aims to widen the stereo image beyond the confines of its dimensions and does so exceptionally well. It’s a bit of a TARDIS in that respect, delivering a big sound that no speaker of its compact dimensions and internal volume has any right to manage.

Leveraging the Free-Q placement setting (free in our case, but wall, shelf, and corner are also available) and using a Hi-Fi quality feed from Tidal Connect, the Ellipse is stunning for its size. Bass and imaging are its most jawdropping facets, punching hard and creating a soundstage that many similarly priced stereo amp/streamer/speaker combinations would be proud of.

Playing a full gamut of music genres doesn’t faze the Ellipse. From Choral to Rap, this small speaker continues to deliver the goods with thoroughly engaging drive, rhythm and spectacular imaging for a single-box 2.1 speaker. Dig into the DSP features and the Ellipse has even more to offer if you avoid metaphorically winding some of the settings up to 11.

Bass & Space is a gem that makes the Ellipse sound bigger still, and has a Goldilocks Mid setting. The Min setting has an extremely subtle effect, while the Max uses some rather obvious psycho-acoustic processing. The Image Elevation (again, Min/Med/Max) is designed to lift the image vertically, should you place it on a low table. From our tests, this setting is best kept to Min, which delivers a little height lift and little change in balance. The Med and Max settings get progressively brighter at the topend frequencies, yet it is still amazing to track the image focus height by switching between the three options.

Not a brand to follow the herd, the Ellipse is delightfully different, delivering a stunning bigscale sound. The punchy cost puts it up against some seriously good packages combining an amplified streamer and a pair of speakers – such as our current favourite de jour, the Marantz M1 and Q-Acoustic 5040 for example. Yet the Ellipse is in a class of one when it comes to delivering, large, audiophile sound from a discreet box you could simply drop on a coffee table.

It’s not designed to be a soundbar, of course, but I can’t help thinking that for many second-room installations, it could be the perfect soundbar/audio system rolled into one quirky-shaped box. It’s not wall-mountable, and there is no HDMI input, but an IKEA shelf and an optical cable could make a damn fine workaround!

The Ellipse is a premium product that leverages advanced audio engineering and striking design to deliver something quite unique in the market. It’s not a budget solution, but for customers looking for large-scale, highfidelity sound from a svelte, single-box speaker for that second room - it’s perfect.

A NEW FOCUS FOR LEICA, PULSE CINEMAS AND INVISION UK

EI brings you the exciting news that Pulse Cinemas and Invision have added the Leica brand to the distribution portfolio, adding a choice of high-performance projection options with innovative use case scenarios in keeping with growing the home cinema market.

Leica Camera AG is an international premium manufacturer of cameras, lenses and sports optics products with over 150 years of company history. As part of its growth strategy, the company has expanded its business to include mobile imaging (smartphones) and the manufacture of high-quality eyeglass lenses, watches and is now represented in the home cinema segment with its own projectors. The year 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the Leica I. First presented to the public at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1925, it was the first mass-produced Leica 35mm camera. With its compact and handy format, it created new photographic applications and revolutionised the world of photography, giving birth to modern photojournalism and fine-art photography. However, the company does not only have an impressive record in still imaging.

Stephan Albrecht, Managing Director, Leica Smart Projection GmbH, explains, “The projection market is a familiar environment for us. Leica was bringing projectors to market as far back as the 1920s. Based on the company’s high level of innovation, many years

of experience and know-how combined with the highest demands on optical performance and image quality, our entry into the home cinema market was the logical next step towards new business horizons and represents a promising opportunity to delight new customers with our premium products. “Our growing range of projectors, utilising the high-quality Leica Summicron lens, gives the end customer unparalleled image and picture quality along with a user-friendly, feature-rich menu powered by VIDAA, our own smart TV operating system.”

So, what is special about the Leica approach to home cinema? Stephan explains, “The fact that Leica comes with a great back story, a wealth of knowledge, respect from within our industry and a meticulous approach to R&D provides a great platform from which to release quality products to the world. Using our unique design philosophy with great minds working behind the scenes, we can harness our work ethic and vision to be a success in the home cinema market. Our vision is to be an industry market leader.”

THE LEICA RANGE

After entering the home cinema market in the autumn of 2023 with the flagship Cine 1 ultra-short throw projector, the brand came to market with a vision for a four-year roadmap of products to be released regularly, offering different options for installers and customers. At this year’s ISE show, the company showcased the new Cine Play 1 long-throw projector to great reaction following the product’s official announcement in November 2024.

Stephan underlines, “Both projectors are feature-rich with innovative triple RGB laser technology for stunningly bright and vivid images, Summicron lens, Leica Image Optimisation (LIO) for superior colour accuracy, contrast and image sharpness all designed to Leica’s legendary standards.

“The Leica Cine 1 features Dolby Atmos surround sound, creating a true cinematic result and is available with 80, 100 and 120in screen

sizes. The smart TV functions include seamless connectivity with streaming platforms, voice control and Apple AirPlay, ensuring a fully integrated entertainment experience.

“The Leica Cine Play 1 is designed for ultimate flexibility, with wireless streaming options via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Apple AirPlay plus multiple ports for easy connectivity. Its compact size and low weight make it the perfect companion for home or outdoor movie nights, requiring no permanent installation.”

So, what was the reception for the products like at ISE? “In my opinion and overall, it was a great success,” says Stephan. “We were consistently busy at our booth, meeting with old and new potential dealers coming from all parts of the world. Our new deal with Pulse Cinemas and Invision UK as our official distributors for the UK was also of huge interest and attracted a lot of attention.”

Going into a little more depth on the products, Stephan reveals, “One of the outstanding features of the Leica Cine Play 1 is the stylish and timeless product design inspired by the Bauhaus school, with high-quality materials such as aluminium and an elegant glass front.

“The projector is very easy to set up with automatic setup functions within the menu through the remote control. Thanks to its low weight, the Cine Play 1 can be set up almost anywhere without any need for permanent installation. The Floor Stand, an optional accessory, offers added convenience, providing a sleek and stable base while eliminating the need for visible power cables.

“The Cine 1, with its motorised dust cover and iF Design Award-winning aesthetics offering clean lines and premium materials, is an elegant design statement in any living space.”

Stephan adds, “The customer may choose to purchase a cabinet to house the projectors with a motorised screen or fixed screen depending on their preference. Also, within the Cine 1, there is a more in-depth menu for a professional setup. Both products combine innovative technologies with enduring design. With these first two introductions, you can see the approach we are taking with first-class performance and technical abilities married to strong aesthetics and installation flexibility.”

As well as the home cinema space, Leica delivers the ability to offer solutions for office spaces, bars, retail and other commercial spaces with the Cine Play 1. The Cine 1 ultrashort throw projector works best with an ALR screen for daylight viewing and is more geared for a fixed environment where it won’t be moved around, making it more focused on the home environment.

So, there are two attractive offerings already on the table, but there are more reasons to engage with the brand as Stephan explains, “We have a four-year roadmap which started in 2023. To date, we have released two projectors, so we are halfway through our product roadmap, which means there will be a new addition this year and then the same for next year. However, that doesn’t mean it stops there, so watch this space as we are here to stay and ultimately grow.”

Delivering this compelling offering now and for the future obviously required the support of a proven value-added distributor. Stephan underscores the importance, “I believe this partnership is huge in terms of what Pulse Cinemas/Invision has to offer for the Leica brand to grow within our sector. With their help, knowledge, expertise and drive, which has been fostered over many years within our great industry, it is a big boost. We at Leica Smart Projection believe together we can do great things and make Leica an industry leader and at the same time propel Pulse Cinemas/Invision to new heights in addition to all the great work they already do.”

Kapes Patel, Business Development & Technical Director, Pulse Cinemas/Invision, adds, “Projection/home cinema is moving into a new phase as we offer a wider range of customers different options from dedicated home cinema spaces to media rooms and other options in the commercial space. Leica has an incredible history and technical ability and has produced some innovative products that offer something truly unique, delivering to our customers a wider choice of options for a greater number of customers. All the usual excellent technical support, training and the ability to see the products in action are being added to the Pulse Cinemas/Invision infrastructure as we speak.”

CEDIA SUPPORTS UK LEGISLATION TO ENHANCE CONNECTED DEVICE SECURITY

Matt Nimmons, Managing Director at CEDIA EMEA, looks at some important legislation that will directly impact integrators.

The UK government introduced landmark legislation under the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Act, establishing vital security requirements for network-connected devices. This legislation represents a significant step forward in protecting consumers and ensuring safer smart homes.

For many years, products entering or accessing the UK and EU markets have had to comply with strict requirements on Health & Safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and performance. The PSTI Bill – which came into effect in the UK on April 29 2024 –means that all internet-connected or networkconnected products also need to meet cyber security requirements, as a new condition of market entry.

The PSTI Act addresses critical vulnerabilities in consumer IoT (Internet of Things) devices by introducing robust security measures. The law now requires manufacturers of UK consumer connectable products and businesses within the supply chain to comply with three minimum security requirements, including:

• Banning of default passwords: Products with factory-set default passwords are prohibited, as they pose an easy target for cyber criminals.

• Product vulnerability disclosure policy: Manufacturers must establish mandatory channels for security researchers to report identified vulnerabilities, enabling swift action to address risks before they can be exploited.

• Transparency around product security updates: If a product is supported with critical security updates, the minimum duration of this support must be clearly specified.

For CEDIA, this marks a pivotal moment for the smart home industry. Having supported this initiative alongside the Digital Television Group (DTG) and Safeshark – the PSTI and RED compliance specialists – we have played a role in advocating for the interests of integrators and homeowners.

The PSTI Act is a crucial development for our industry. These updated regulations

establish much-needed security benchmarks for connected devices, offering protection to both consumers and the industry at large. It underpins the importance of secure, well-designed devices in connected homes and highlights the critical role our sector plays in shaping the future of technology. By supporting this effort, we’ve helped ensure that the legislation aligns with the practical needs of our sector, providing clarity for integrators and fostering trust in smart technologies.

The new legislation enhances product credibility and consumer confidence as homeowners will benefit from safer, more reliable connected devices.

2024 REVEALS ‘GOLDILOCKS’ GROWTH RATE

Jason Knott, EI’s resident number cruncher, former CE Pro Editor and data solutions architect evangelist at D-Tools, examines the year ahead.

In 2024, the custom integration market experienced what is colloquially called ‘Goldilocks’ growth—not too hot, not too cold. Instead, the market moved ahead at a moderate but steady rate. That’s the conclusion based on the latest data from D-Tools, an end-to-end business management software provider that offers insights into the proposals being created and contracts being signed by thousands of integration companies worldwide.

MARKET PERFORMANCE IN 2024

How were 2024 sales for the average integration company? According to data from D-Tools Cloud, the average electronic systems integrator’s sales grew by 6.5% in 2024. This conservative growth rate signals that the system integration market continues its steady climb out of the turmoil caused by the supply chain crisis following the pandemic, which triggered global inflation. While the 2024 sales increase is not groundbreaking, the 6.5% growth rate is an improvement over the 4.6% increase recorded in 2023.

At first glance, the market appears to be progressing well, but is that really the case? Similar to trends identified in the D-Tools Midyear Report, sales growth among integrators is not being driven by an increasing number of installations but by larger project sizes.

INSTALLATIONS FLAT

Examining installation trends, the data shows that the average integration company in 2024 completed between 91 and 92 installations, a slight increase from between 90 and 91 projects in 2023. The flat rate of installations is not necessarily a cause for concern.

The continuing difficulty in finding skilled labour means that integration companies must be selective about the projects they take on. Without additional technicians, it is impossible to rapidly scale the number of installations. The fact that installations remain flat suggests that integrators are carefully choosing their clients rather than overextending their resources.

PROJECT SIZES ON THE RISE

Meanwhile, the average project size reached £14,147 in 2024, up from £13,333 in 2023, representing a 6.1% increase. Several factors may contribute to this trend. Firstly, integrators could be expanding into new service areas such as energy management, lighting and video surveillance. Secondly, inflation remains a significant factor. The impact of inflation on both product pricing and wages is unknown, but it likely plays a role in the reported growth rate.

While larger project sizes indicate positive revenue trends, they do not necessarily translate into higher profits for integration companies, especially if inflation is driving up costs.

PROPOSALS AND CLOSING RATES

The number of proposals created per integrator rose by 10% in 2024. On average, integrators produced 171 proposals in 2024, compared to 155 proposals in 2023. This increase suggests strong market demand and highlights the efficiency of D-Tools Cloud, which enables integrators to create proposals more quickly and effectively, potentially reaching more clients.

However, since the number of installations remained flat, the data suggests that closing rates have declined. The closing rate in 2024 was 53%, down from 59% in 2023, potentially reflecting increased competition in the market.

Furthermore, the average proposal value in 2024 was £29,919, yet integrators retained only 47% of their original proposal price in final contracts. This discounting trend suggests either stiff negotiations with clients or a strategic approach by integrators to present high-value proposals that stretch customer budgets, aiming to showcase premium equipment.

INDUSTRY DATA INSIGHTS

The data presented is compiled from D-Tools Cloud, the Software as a Service (SaaS) solution. The insights are drawn from more than 176,642 proposals and 67,095 signed contracts recorded in 2024 across over 2,000 integration companies using the cloud-based software. The dataset includes installations in both residential and commercial markets. No data from D-Tools System Integrator (SI), the company’s on-premises software solution, was included in this analysis.

The numbers suggest a market that is steady but evolving, with integrators focusing on larger projects while navigating labour shortages and increasing competition. Looking ahead, firms that adapt to these market dynamics by expanding their offerings and refining their proposal strategies may be best positioned for continued success.

A GREENER WORLD: HOW TO REDUCE ENERGY COSTS WITH COMFORT AND SAFETY

Paul Jones, Sales Director UK & Ireland at global lighting controls manufacturer B.E.G., explores why every large building project should integrate an automation system.

Buildings account for 35% of global energy consumption and 38% of emissions, making them the single largest contributor to climate change, according to the UN Environment Programme’s Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction. The need for environmentally friendly energy solutions is greater than ever.

Despite this, investment in energy efficiency within the building sector remains minimal. Achieving climate neutrality demands rapid, intelligent solutions, many of which already exist and are both cost-effective and easy to implement. One of the most impactful is the intelligent control of LED lighting, which, when combined with sensor-based systems, can significantly reduce energy use. Studies show that lighting energy costs in commercial and public buildings can be cut by an average of 50%, with savings reaching up to 80% in certain spaces. The investment in occupancy detectors is quickly recouped through lower energy bills and extended luminaire lifespan, while also enhancing comfort and safety.

Public buildings, particularly their corridors, are often lit continuously during operating hours, an unnecessary waste of energy. Motion detectors provide an effective solution, activating lights only when needed by detecting infrared radiation from moving bodies. These sensors ensure that lighting is only used when a space is occupied, helping to cut costs and improve energy efficiency. The added benefit of automated lighting control is improved hygiene and convenience, as there is no need to manually operate switches.

Occupancy sensors take this a step further, particularly in areas where people remain for longer periods, such as classrooms, offices, nurseries and conference rooms. These sensors continuously measure ambient brightness, adjusting artificial lighting accordingly. If sufficient natural light is present, the system dims or switches off the artificial lights, even if the room is occupied. The impact is substantial—public toilets, for example, can achieve up to 80% energy savings, while office spaces can see reductions of around 50%.

THE CLIMATE DILEMMA: ARE SMART BUILDINGS TRULY SUSTAINABLE?

Ryan Ovens, Founder and CEO at control specialist Rithum, explores a pressing issue.

The built environment is evolving at an unprecedented pace. Smart buildings promise to optimise energy use, reduce waste and improve occupant comfort, offering a potential solution to the 35% of global emissions that stem from energy supply. However, there is an uncomfortable paradox at play. The very technology that makes buildings more intelligent—sensors, screens, processors and cabling—comes with its own significant carbon footprint. As the industry moves towards smarter cities, this challenge must be confronted to ensure a truly sustainable future.

THE HIDDEN CARBON COST OF SMART BUILDING TECH

For every kilogram of electronics manufactured, approximately 25 kilograms of carbon emissions are generated. When multiplied across the billions of devices required to enable intelligent automation, climate control and monitoring, the environmental cost is substantial. Yet, it is not just the devices themselves that contribute to the problem.

Cabling infrastructure is another overlooked factor. The carbon footprint of laying kilometres of copper or fibre cabling in large-scale developments is considerable, particularly when redundancies are built into the design to accommodate future upgrades. Retrofitting older buildings often results in further material and energy waste. In some cases, smart buildings may even require more cabling than traditional ones, as an increasing number of systems connect to centralised control units. The key question is how to reduce the carbon impact of smart building infrastructure without compromising functionality.

DOING MORE WITH LESS: CONSOLIDATION AND CABLE CUTTING

One solution is device consolidation, combining multiple functions into fewer devices. A single, well-designed interface could control lighting, heating and energy monitoring, replacing the need for separate systems and their associated wiring. Fewer devices mean fewer resources consumed in manufacturing and fewer emissions across the supply chain.

Reducing reliance on extensive cabling is another critical step. Wireless technologies such as mesh networking, Thread, Zigbee, or LoRaWAN can significantly cut cabling needs, lowering both installation costs and emissions. These solutions are particularly beneficial

in retrofit projects, where rewiring can be prohibitively expensive and carbon-intensive.

This is not to suggest cabling has no place. Security, bandwidth and system design considerations mean that wired connections will always be necessary in certain applications. However, a moderated approach, balancing wired and wireless solutions, could make a significant impact.

Decentralising data processing to the edge—keeping decision-making local rather than centralised—also improves energy efficiency. By reducing network bandwidth demands, edge computing lowers energy use while enhancing privacy, making it a win-win for both sustainability and user experience.

BALANCING THE EQUATION

The goal is to ensure that the benefits of smart buildings outweigh their environmental costs. Energy savings from optimised systems must be considered alongside the entire lifecycle of the technology, from raw material extraction to disposal.

To achieve this balance, manufacturers should prioritise modular, upgradable and recyclable designs. Developers must consider a wireless-first strategy where appropriate, minimising unnecessary cabling. Policymakers also have a role to play, incentivising lifecycle assessments and low-carbon innovations.

Most importantly, the industry must shift its perspective. Smart does not necessarily mean more technology—it means better technology, designed with sustainability in mind.

THE OPPORTUNITY AHEAD

As the smart building revolution continues, there is an opportunity to rethink how technology integrates with the built environment. Addressing hidden carbon costs now will ensure that these systems deliver on their sustainability promise without unintended consequences.

How can the industry better balance innovation with environmental responsibility? The conversation is far from over.

TANGO FOR CASH?

Richard Stevenson, our trade-focused reviewer, plays host to the REL T/9x SE subwoofer, a colourful addition to the bass specialist’s line up.

In a world where subwoofers are usually dressed in sombre shades of black to blend into your cinema-noir installs, the REL T/9x SE (£1549.00 retail) crashes the party with luxury automotive coachwork in Italian Racing Red, Le Mons Yellow, or Tangerine Dream – (AKA bright orange). Look no further if your customers have a penchant for something a little different and visually striking.

Yet, the T/9x SE is more than just a pretty face. It’s a high-performance, high-margin and conversation-starting addition to any home cinema or two-channel system. Drawing on REL’s extensive sub-bass expertise, the sonic chops are pretty much assured even before we plug it in. Yet, we can safely say that on the customer menu here is aesthetic Marmite.

The T/9x SE stays true to REL form with Class A/B amplification, all analogue filter networks, high-level inputs and rotary knobs. Yes, those twiddly control things for gain, frequency and phase are rather inconveniently around the back rather than on a smart device interface for set-up. Conversely, you have far

more chance of setting the REL up correctly and staying that way without the consumer messing around with the app from their sofa.

The SE version is essentially the wellregarded T/9x with fancy paint and some rather lush trim details. Those include a large carbon centre cap on the main 10in driver replacing the branded aluminium cap of the original, a fancy carbon surround on the top badge and larger, luxury chrome-blinged feet. The main driver suspension gets some light tweaking for the new cap weight difference and, underneath, the 10in down-firing passive with REL logo remains unchanged. Power is supplied by a 300W class AB amp.

Connectivity covers mono LFE RCA, which bypasses the low-pass filter in favour of AVR bass management, mono line level in RCA, and stereo speaker level input using a Neutrik connector. The REL analogue filter network handles the line-level frequency integration with the main speakers.

The cabinet is the existing heavyweight and braced MDF unit as supplied on the nonSE version, with the whole unit weighing in at a substantial 19kg. This series forgoes REL signature side handles, so have a polishing cloth handy when you have finished shuffling it around for peak position. It comes supplied with a basic cloth grill mounted on lugs. With the grille

off, the lug holes let the cosmetic side down a bit, particularly in the lighter yellow version. Conversely, do the lugs add to the design’s raw automotive engineering style charm? I said the look was polarising; I can’t even agree with myself.

TEAM WORK

Exemplary fit and finish aside, with a fully manual setup via classic analogue crossover, volume, and phase controls, the installer’s expertise is going to play a crucial role in extracting the best performance from the system. There’s no software to update, no frustrating calibration

menus, no getting the laptop out and no app to download and log-in to. Like many REL subs before it, the T/9x SE offers an intuitive setup and an installer-tuned bass experience that rewards careful positioning and adjustment.

It’s far less ‘user plug and play’ than almost all of its competition at the price, creating a handy demand for installer expertise. Offering additional setup services, acoustic treatments, or even recommending multiple subs for a smoother response across the room can be an easy upsell for installers who know their craft.

The trouble is, I am a bit out of practice and a sonic dog’s dinner in the new testing room ensued. A quick word with REL’s Rob Hunt put things back on the right path. A while later, I ended up with corner placement, combined low and high-level inputs from the Marantz M1 streamer/amp and, after much jumping up and down from the sofa, reaching around and knob twiddling, a superbly integrated sound.

Coming straight after the excellent Velodyne MiniVee X, the REL delivers deeper, smoother bass that feels more integrated into the music mix. It goes plenty loud for LFE activities with gizzard-wobbling LFE and digs bass depth seemingly beyond its spec sheet. The little Velodyne packs a faster punch in my room, but that sub feels more like a Ford Focus RS Asbo than the REL’s muscular classic racing car to which its lush paintwork eludes. The T/9x SE adds depth, warmth and realism without a trace of bloated or artificial bass – a trick ably demonstrated to the customer by turning it off.

While it requires a little patience to set up and lacks the convenience of remote adjustments and EQ, the T/9x SE offers a sonic return that is organic and handson, rewarding the installer rather than an anonymous software engineer.

It is an exercise in analogue bass engineering and sumptuous build quality, combining exceptional performance and bold personality. If you need a traditionally unhidden product to leap forward and be the focal point highlight of any system, the T/9x SE lives up to its suffix as a Special Edition.

LUXURY HOME CINEMA SEATING: ELEVATING COMFORT AND EXPERIENCE

The home cinema and media room market has never been more dynamic. As clients push for high-end, fully personalised experiences, integrators must consider every element of design, not just screens and speakers, says Ray Bohringer, CEO, Pavone Designs.

Seating is no longer an afterthought—it is the foundation of comfort, aesthetics and functionality in a luxury home cinema. At Pavone Design, the demand for bespoke seating solutions is shaping the industry, with clients expecting seating that is as meticulously designed as the rest of their home.

Gone are the days when home cinemas simply replicated commercial theatre seating. Today’s clients expect seating that seamlessly integrates into their space, both in terms of design flexibility and technical innovation. The ability to customise everything from sizing and finishes to integrated technology is what sets a premium home cinema apart.

Custom sizing is a fundamental aspect of any well-designed home cinema. Not all spaces are uniform in size or shape and seating must fit perfectly within the available space while

maintaining a balanced layout. Adjustable seat width and depth allow for personal preference and ensure the right fit for any room. Armrests and consoles can be resized to create a seamless flow and flexible configurations enable integrators to design tiered seating arrangements or unique layouts that align with the room’s architecture. This level of precision ensures that every cinema project feels purpose-built rather than a retrofit solution.

A truly luxurious home cinema should reflect the homeowner’s vision, which means seating must be as adaptable as the overall design concept. Pavone Design champions modularity, allowing seating arrangements to be tailored to the space. Individual components can be added or removed to achieve the perfect layout, while seat placement can be adjusted to enhance both aesthetics and acoustics. Whether the

goal is a traditional theatre-style row or a more intimate lounge setting, flexibility is essential in crafting a seamless experience.

Luxury is often defined by the quality of materials and in high-end home cinemas, upholstery plays a crucial role. Clients are no

THE EVOLUTION OF AV CONNECTIVITY: USB-C AND HDMI LEAD THE CHARGE

James Chen, Managing Director of Kordz, addresses some of the sector’s most pressing challenges.

AV technologies continue to advance at an astonishing pace, pushing bandwidth capacity and performance to unprecedented levels. While cutting-edge product innovation drives this evolution, critically, as the arteries of any system, the foundational cabling must also keep pace to allow today’s devices to deliver on their potential.

To meet these evolving requirements, manufacturers must closely monitor the advancements in AV technology, changing customer needs and market trends to ensure their cables not only support the latest performance standards, but that they are also equipped to help systems integrators navigate shifting goal posts. Today, two key connectivity standards stand at the forefront of this transformation: USB-C and HDMI.

Recognising the importance of quality USB and HDMI cables in optimising AV performance, the notion of seamless interoperability and streamlining installation is one thing—delivering on your promises is quite another. As a company run by seasoned former integrators that know all the frustrations that come with the job, Kordz focuses on quality, reliability and performance

in its design and manufacturing processes, following precise engineering principles, utilising premium materials, and applying advanced production techniques to develop certified, standardised cabling and connectors that support today’s demanding AV systems.

In our quest to stay ahead of the USB-C and HDMI curve, we consider our solutions more than just links between point A and point B. They are meticulously designed and engineered to ensure fast, efficient, and long-lasting connectivity—all while supporting these current and future performance specifications. Let’s take a look at this in more detail.

THE RISE OF USB-C: A UNIFIED AV CONNECTIVITY STANDARD

USB-C has become one of the backbones of next-generation commercial AV solutions and the latest iteration, USB4 v2 has pushed data transfer to 80Gbps. This massive bandwidth, along with support of Thunderbolt tunnelling and DisplayLink compatibility unlocks the ability to transfer raw video footage, stream uncompressed 4K or 8K video and handle high-

speed data applications with minimal latency. At the same time, USB-C’s power capacity has increased to 240W, allowing it to power AV equipment directly via a single cable. This eliminates the need for separate power supplies and reduces cable clutter, making installations cleaner and more efficient. USB-C’s reversible connector design enhances its practicality by eliminating the frustrations of traditional USB-A and USB-B connectors that required specific orientation. Whether in a crowded equipment rack or behind a display, USB-C ensures quick, hassle-free connections and seamless interoperability of diverse AV components.

As USB-C continues to gain traction, its cross-device compatibility will only expand, offering businesses a viable future-ready networking solution.

THE EVOLUTION OF HDMI: A LEGACY OF INNOVATION

Since its inception in 2002, HDMI has revolutionised AV connectivity, with nearly 12 billion HDMI-enabled devices shipped worldwide. Over the years, the standard has evolved significantly, introducing numerous updates to accommodate higher resolutions, faster refresh rates and greater bandwidth. This ongoing advancement has led to a complex landscape of versions, numbers and abbreviations—each requiring corresponding enhancements to HDMI cables to maintain seamless performance. In 2003, the Standard HDMI Cable debuted alongside the HDMI 1.0 specification, supporting transmission rates of up to 4.95Gbps and 1080p resolution. Since then, HDMI technology has advanced dramatically, culminating in today’s Ultra HighSpeed HDMI cable. The current HDMI 2.1 specification supports an impressive 48Gbps transmission rate, resolutions as high as 8K and 10K and refresh rates up to 120Hz. Now,

the industry is setting its sights on the next evolution: HDMI 2.2. What will HDMI 2.2 bring to the AV landscape? While full details are still emerging, Ultra96 certification—expected to validate HDMI 2.2’s support for 96Gbps bandwidth—is anticipated to enter the market by 2026. Several key advancements are expected, including increased bandwidth and higher frame rates, beyond 120Hz. This could further refine HDMI’s suitability for next-gen gaming, AR/VR and other highly immersive AV applications. However, there is still work to

be done. Testing and certification procedures must be fully implemented, and updates to physical cabling must be applied before HDMI 2.2 becomes a true, tried and tested reality. Designing systems around standards that are not yet fully established would be premature. We’re already seeing this play out as the industry slowly transitions from 4K to 8K. While building AV networks around 8K may seem like a forward-thinking choice, in many cases, a more stable, reliable and thoroughly vetted 4K solution remains the smarter, more practical approach. If in doubt, ask your distributor.

THE FUTURE OF AV CONNECTIVITY: CHOOSE PROVEN QUALITY

As society shifts to a digital infrastructure and AV ecosystems grow increasingly complex, the need for faster, more efficient and more reliable connectivity solutions will only intensify. Whether leveraging USB-C’s universal power and data capabilities or embracing HDMI’s continuous evolution, AV professionals must carefully select cabling that ensures peak performance and full compliance with the latest standards. The best practice, regardless of performance specifications, is to partner with manufacturers and distributors dedicated to quality and continuous innovation—those who uphold the highest standards through precision engineering, premium materials, rigorous thirdparty testing and industry-leading expertise.

Demand for faster, more reliable connectivity in homes continues to rise

PROCELLA AUDIO: BETTER BY DESIGN

Company co-founder Anders Uggelberg

explains the history and heritage of Procella Audio and what makes the brand unique in the world of home cinema and AV performance.

With a new management team pledging to further raise the profile of the company, comprising Ignace Rombaut, CEO, and Wim Buyens, Chairman of the Board, Procella Audio is also keen to emphasise that the brand’s heritage remains fully intact. Company cofounder Anders Uggelberg continues to lead product development and production.

Anders enthuses, “I am really happy to stay on, looking after the development of future products and, of course, exploring upgrades for existing ones, an area we have always been strong in. It’s an exciting time for the brand as we expand our presence across the sector.”

Anders’ interest in audio goes back a long way. He reveals that he was just 15 years old when he designed his first speaker. This early passion only grew as the young audio enthusiast matured.

Anders explains, “At around the age of 18, I found myself in Stockholm after completing my

military service. I began studying mathematics, physics and architectural acoustics at the Royal Institute of Technology. This obviously deepened my understanding of what makes audio and design work. During this time, I also worked as a projectionist at a local cinema. This was the beginning of my deep interest in cinema design and how to achieve the best performance.”

Following this, Anders also studied Industrial Design at the Swedish Institute of Arts and Crafts. More crucially, he co-founded his first company with Tobbe Benckert.

“Both big music fans, Tobbe worked in a shop selling musical instruments in the late 1970s, and we thought it would be a great idea to build our own touring rig to rent out and take on the road. So, A&T Ljudproduktion AB was born, and we had a successful period touring with many artists. We even worked with Eurovision.

“However, staying on the road for too long wasn’t for me, so I pivoted back to speaker design and began consulting on systems for commercial cinemas. It was during this time that I developed a strong interest in THX and the company’s approach to not just speaker design but overall cinema design.”

In 1990, Anders became one of the first European designers to graduate from THX training. The training was led by none other than Tomlinson Holman, the inventor of THX.

Anders recalls, “Shortly after, I designed and project-managed the first THX-certified cinema in Stockholm. It was a huge success, paving the way for an even closer relationship and collaboration with THX.”

Anders continued to use THX technology for the backbone of many of the cinemas in the early days. Working closely with the company Anders delivered over 100 THX certified commercial cinemas in Scandinavia.

Anders’ success in cinema design continued. With a total of over 300 installations under his belt, his growing reputation earned him the role of Director of Cinema Products for DTS Cinema Division in Europe in 1998. While still in this role, the seeds of Procella Audio began to sprout when Anders was invited to design a new DTS cinema at DTS Europe headquarters in Twyford, England, in 2005.

Anders explains the considerable requirements for the cinema:

“It needed to seat 30 people and deliver the best audio and video performance across a variety of sources—not just 35mm film, but e-Cinema and DVD in every existing DTS surround sound format. The space also needed to be future-ready for playback of the Digital Cinema (DCI) standard, as well as HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc, which were just around the corner.”

Anders continues, “At this point, I began collaborating with Procella Audio co-founder Gerben Van Duyl, who was also working at DTS as Director of Business Development for Consumer Content. We took on this challenging project, which required the highest standards. We visited many speaker manufacturers looking for something suitable, but we concluded that there were none that would work for what we were trying to achieve. The solution? Design our own, of course!”

CINEMA DNA

Using principles that still define Procella Audio today, Anders and Gerben created the first true Procella Audio system. The design considered both cinema and home entertainment requirements, employing thorough acoustic design, top-tier components,

mathematical modelling and meticulous testing and optimisation.

Another successful collaboration with Gerben followed: a 7.1 DTS room for BAFTA in London. This project brought Procella Audio even closer to becoming a reality.

Anders reveals, “The DTS and BAFTA screens were a huge success and word spread about the system’s performance. It seemed logical to design a system for the wider market. I left DTS to pursue this project and create commercially available speakers based on true cinema design.”

One of the first outings for the new project was a room sponsored by DTS at the Hi-Fi News Show in Heathrow, London, in 2006. Anders recalls, “The system comprised three P815 screen speakers, six P8 surround speakers and six P15 subwoofers. The event went so well that

we received the Best Demonstration in Show award. This success gave us confidence that there was an audience for what we were doing and led to the establishment of the original Procella Audio factory in Sweden.”

In later years, the success of the brand has led to other high-profile projects including being asked to contribute to the THX certified CEDIA Showroom at the organisation’s HQ in the U.S. Described by many at the time of its launch in 2017 as, “the best cinema demonstration space in the world,” Procella was invited to provide the audio elements by Dennis Erskine, then Chairman of CEDIA, as well as being CEO and Founder of the highly respected Erskine Group, specialising in architectural acoustics – a very real endorsement of what Procella Audio had set out to achieve.

MAKING THE PROCELLA AUDIO DIFFERENCE

Meticulous design and dedication underpin Procella Audio’s concept. However, Anders believes what sets the brand apart is its approach.

“My earliest audio experiences come from live sound and rock and roll. Many of our competitors approach the market from a Hi-Fi perspective, adapting products for jobs they weren’t designed to do. From day one, Procella Audio products have been purpose-built for their intended roles, with cinema in their DNA. This really shows in their performance.”

Anders adds, “Dynamic range is another of our USPs. We lead in this area, ensuring every part of the playback, from the loudest to the quietest, is handled with care. This is evident in products like the P815, one of the first speakers we ever designed. It’s still in the range today, now in version 6.1, as we continually find ways to improve its performance.

“The range is accessible, too, because each product is designed to suit specific room sizes. All models share the same voice and high performance, but they’re tailored to provide the appropriate sound levels for different spaces. Simply know your room size and you can select the correct Procella Audio system for your project.”

Respecting content is also key. Anders says, “THX, as a concept, was created by George

Lucas and Tomlinson Holman to protect the integrity of George’s work. This principle has been central to Procella Audio since the beginning—respecting the creator’s vision and bringing it to life.”

Because of the close collaboration and respect for the THX concept over the years, from the current range, the P815, P8 and P18 Procella Audio speakers are all THX Certified.

Anders highlights other key performance features, such as uniformity of voice across the space, closed-box cabinets for superior transient

response and group delay, a constant directivity waveguide and carefully matched crossovers for superior dispersion characteristics.

Ultimately, Anders’ story underscores that Procella Audio is rooted in a deep understanding of and dedication to cinema sound and design. It’s in the brand’s DNA and this expertise is embedded in every Procella Audio system.

A JOURNEY OF INNOVATION – D b M

Since its launch in 2017, DbM has continued to evolve and thrive. Explore its journey and discover the value of our brands, services, and dedicated team.

Smart home technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace and integrators need the right partners to stay ahead. Recognising a gap in the market, Meridian launched Distributed by Meridian (DbM) in 2017—not just as a distributor, but as a partner to integrators delivering luxury, high-performance audio and video solutions.

CURATED SOLUTIONS FOR INTEGRATORS

DbM’s journey began with a partnership with Barco Residential, a premium market leader in high-end residential projection systems. This collaboration marked the beginning of a series of partnerships that would further enhance its offerings to the market.

Reflecting on this time, Barry Sheldrick, Director of Sales at DbM comments, “We started from there and grew respectfully, taking our time and never pushing or taking shortcuts. We slowly began to grow and build momentum and started to add other complimentary brands

where we identified a need. These partnerships have not only expanded our product portfolio but also ensured an excellent footprint in the UK market.”

DbM is committed to delivering unique solutions through a carefully curated portfolio of premium brands, including Ambisonic Systems, Barco Residential, Lumagen, Meridian and Trinnov Audio. Each brand aligns with its ethos of excellence and innovation. This selection process prioritises performance, design, ease of installation, and value, ensuring that every product meets the highest standards.

Barry says, “The brands we work with cover a breadth of price points, with even the more affordable product installations still receiving the same high standard of service, support, demonstration options and design options. These products require a depth of engineering behind them and a reason for every aspect which makes up the product. This ensures that we have measured and engineered solutions that come across over the whole DbM brand.”

Moreover, DbM ensures that every detail of the product information is readily available to integrators, enabling them to make informed decisions and deliver exceptional results for their clients. This transparency and accessibility make integrators want to work with DbM, as they know they will have the support and resources they need for successful installations.

SUPPORT BEYOND DISTRIBUTION

DbM is more than a distributor—it’s a solutions partner. Integrators benefit from a range of services, including:

• DbM Design & Specification Service – Creating detailed documentation to streamline project planning and enhance client presentations.

• Technical Support & Training – Providing hands-on expertise to simplify integration.

• Calibration & Commissioning – Ensuring optimal performance and client satisfaction for home cinema installations.

“We find it so important to collaborate with our customers,” adds Barry. “Integrators have a myriad of tasks to handle during the final handover to the client. We want to be able to alleviate some of this burden by offering services such as the calibration of Barco projectors, creating a ‘tah-dah!’ moment that

leaves a lasting impression on clients. Our aim is to deliver spectacular systems that not only meet but exceed client expectations, leaving both the client and integrator thrilled with the end result.”

INDUSTRY RECOGNITION & FUTURE GROWTH

DbM’s approach has earned it the Distributor of the Year title at the Smart Buildings Awards, recognising its commitment to excellence.

Looking ahead, the company is expanding its infrastructure, enhancing its demonstration space and bringing exclusive new brands to the UK market.

BMT ELECTRICS DELIVERS THRILLING THORPE THEATRE

When an architect client approached BMT Electrics about adding a cinema space to their home, there was bound to be more to the project than a traditional basement theatre space. The end result was a showcase for both the integrator and the client – and arguably provides some classic takeaways on best practices for any home cinema project.

The first takeaway surrounds the importance of aligning priorities.

From the start, this project required the BMT team to work closely with the client on top priorities for the space, with holistic design in mind to ensure this space not only delivered for cinephile performance, but also provided practical function. Breaking with tradition of

a cinema in the basement or another similarly isolated space, the clients wanted a cinema on their first floor. Not only that, but the room selected was directly beneath with their children’s bedrooms and boasted beautiful bifold glass doors that lead to the garden. For the client, this flexible floorplan was ideal for entertaining, allowing the room to be useful

for football watch parties and other garden gatherings as well as movie nights. BMT recognised the potential acoustic challenges, but forged ahead undaunted.

Bryn Turk, founder of BMT Electrics, approaches projects with the mindset that aligning your work to a client’s priorities is non-negotiable. For example, if they value an

impressive-looking showpiece over technical performance, adjust your recommendations and budget allocation accordingly. If your client seems unclear on their priorities for their project, Bryn has found success using examples and stories to help the client explore their priorities.

“Explain projects you’ve completed for others, or challenges you’ve overcome in the past to help the client understand what you can accomplish and what they value most,” says Bryn. In this case, the client valued creating a space that would be used daily and enjoyed by guests and residents alike, over acoustic isolation. Bryn aligned his design with the clients’ needs, ensuring this cinema would suit its primary and secondary use cases without disturbing the rest of the household.

Lesson two concerns getting real about the budget. It can sometimes be hard for new clients to understand how far their budget can really go on a project: they may not have taken into account those behind-the-scenes pieces like wiring, acoustics, calibration and labour that have to happen to create a great home cinema experience.

On this project, the BMT Team was working with a modest budget, but the expectations were high. To ensure the company could deliver the core-cinema experience the client was looking for, the team was intentional about their budget spend on equipment, prioritising those foundational pieces that would continue to impress even if other aspects of the cinema were upgraded over time.

A high-performance projector and a 7.1 immersive sound system became the backbone of the system. The projector—a Sony 4K VPL—was selected for its strong brightness and clarity, ensuring that even in high ambient light conditions, such as when the bi-fold doors to the garden were open, the visuals remained crisp and vivid. By spending on this foundational piece, the cinema could deliver stunning visuals from day one, with no compromises during critical viewing moments.

Similarly, the choice of a 7.1 surround sound system emphasised immersive audio in the main seating area. Beale Street Audio’s Sonic Vortex technology provided precise, directional sound that enhanced the cinematic experience. This configuration also ensured the system could adapt to more casual settings, such as when entertaining guests.

When it came to selecting content sources, the team deferred to the client. Video sources like an Amazon Fire Stick and Xbox, which, while functional for streaming and gaming, are easily replaceable. This approach offered the client immediate usability without committing budget to items that could be upgraded later without significant cost. By prioritising highimpact components and leaving room for future enhancements, the BMT team delivered a system that exceeded expectations for performance while remaining adaptable to the client’s evolving needs.

three covers collaboration driving creativity. Any integrator reading the description of this room can picture the challenge of lighting and sound isolation for that space, but BMT was undeterred. “You can create impressive immersive experiences in a wide range of spaces and constraints,” says Bryn.

Working closely with the client on the design the team selected, BMT recommended interior design details that would mitigate the worst of the acoustic challenges: heavy blackout curtains to block light and prevent harsh acoustic reflections from the glass bi-fold doors and thick carpet to provide additional sound absorption.

When it came to deciding on the sound system that would bring the theatre to life, BMT enlisted the support of U.K.-based distributor

Dizzyfish. The design needed to balance exceptional sound clarity for cinematic moments with ambient sound coverage for more casual settings, such as when the theatre’s bi-fold doors were opened to the garden. Additionally, the team needed to consider the best solution to offer quality sound, but not reverberate through the children’s bedrooms. Vanco’s Beale Street Audio line was chosen to deliver the full theatrical experience. “Beale Street products are incredibly versatile and provided the perfect solution for the 7.1 surround sound system, offering superior sound isolation at a price point that fell nicely in line with the client’s budget,” says Dave Wilson, Director at Dizzyfish.

To achieve the 7.1 surround sound system the team used in-wall LCR speakers and a subwoofer positioned behind the screen to maintain the room’s aesthetics and save space, with four in-ceiling speakers placed strategically to focus on the main seating area. This layout ensured clarity and immersion during movies while leveraging the directional properties of Beale Street’s Sonic Vortex technology to minimise sound bleed into those other rooms.

The Thorpe cinema balances aesthetics, practicality and performance, delivering a space that functions as both a high-end home cinema and an entertainment hub. The clients have been so thrilled with the end result that they find themselves using the space on a daily basis, a true testament to the importance of aligning priorities and budget and what a successful collaboration can look like.
