We are pleased to announce the launch of the first HDBaseT™3 matrix product to the market

Using HDBaseT™3 technology, these powerful HDBaseT™ matrix support uncompromised 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 resolutions over distances up to 100m over a CAT6A. The new HMX88-18G and HMX44-18G come into their own with advanced audio features specifically designed for maximising the integration of AV sources in the modern home. Enhanced audio routing is achieved through the integrated audio matrix. This enables the audio from displays (via HDMI ARC or Optical S/PDIF), and all other sources to be embedded and routed through the system at the users discretion. The inclusion of a 1Gb Ethernet channel allows for LAN serving to all HDBT outputs / zones as required, IR and RS-232 pass-through, advanced EDID management, and PoC provide the ultimate flexibility.

The combination of these technology features enable our installation partners the ability to create a truly immersive AV experience throughout the home.

ANCIENT PHILOSOPHIES FOR THE SMART HOME MARKET

In other life whilst completing a degree in ancient and medieval history, EI seriously considered becoming a history professor. Despite deciding against it, many things stuck. One of them being ancient schools of philosophy. Nobody can argue that running a smart home/AV/home cinema business in 2025 is like being an ancient philosopher, but it occurred recently that some of these ideas can be of considerable help today, in particular the school of stoicism. In fact, even if you have never heard of Zeno of Citium, you will be familiar with some of the ideas this school of thinking has produced. Today many entrepreneurs, thinkers and authors are influenced by the teachings of stoicism. Jack Dorsey (Co-Founder of Twitter), entrepreneur, Tim Ferriss and marketer and author Ryan Holiday, to name a few.

WHAT IS IT?

The Stoic school of philosophy was founded in Athens around 300 BCE by Zeno of Citium, and centres on the pursuit of wisdom and virtue as the path to a flourishing life. The school had many famous adherents in its earliest phases, some of whom are still widely known today. Don’t think so? Remember that bit in Gladiator when Marcus Aurelius’ son Commodus complains that his father wrote to him about ‘virtues’ and he didn’t possess any of them? (It’s the bit just before he murders him). That’s pretty accurate, you see Marcus Aurelius was a big believer in stoicism and based his life around its ‘virtues’.

The main principles established around stoicism include ‘Virtue as the Highest Good’, the idea that virtue (moral excellence) is the only true good. External things like wealth, health, status are ‘indifferent’—they may have value, but they don’t contribute to genuine happiness.

There are four cardinal virtues in stoicism: Wisdom: Knowing what is good, bad, and indifferent. Courage: Acting rightly in the face of fear or adversity. Justice: Treating others fairly and doing what is right. Temperance: Practicing self-control and moderation. Basing your approach to life and business around stoic ideas starts to make sense.

Some other stoic principles are also of interest. The concept of the ‘Dichotomy of Control’ is perhaps one of the most useful concepts in stoicism when applied to running a business.

This core principle involves recognising what is within our control and what is not. Our control only genuinely extends to our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Everything else—external events, other people, and outcomes—lies beyond our control. Effectiveness as a team member, leader and person, only comes from focusing on what we can actually control and accepting what we cannot. Not easy to do, but it does have real benefits.

Stoics advocate for living in harmony with ‘nature’; this does not mean encouraging you to go and live in a field, it refers more to both human nature (rationality) and the universal order, (the cosmos). This involves understanding how the world actually works and trying to align one’s will with it.

Stoics also saw ‘reason’ as a defining human characteristic. Stoics try to use reason to guide decisions and maintain emotional resilience. By developing a rational perspective, people find it easier to remain calm amid challenges in business and life. Related to this is the concept of ‘Amor Fati (Love of Fate)’. This means accepting events as necessary parts of the natural order and finding meaning in everything that happens.

There is a lot more to stoicism than we can summarise here, but adherence to some of its principles can provide a really useful framework for work and for life.

THE HOME CINEMA ALLIANCE PRESENTS INTERNATIONAL HOME CINEMA DAY

Taking place on October 26, 2025, International Home Cinema Day has been created to promote the concept of home cinema to consumers and related trades, such as interior designers. The initiative aims to underline the high performance and joy brought through the magic of a well-designed home cinema system. The day will be an opportunity for Home Cinema Alliance (HCA) members to promote themselves and their work, but the HCA is encouraging the whole industry—and anyone interested in home cinema—to get behind the initiative and elevate home cinema systems’ awareness and appreciation to the next level. The #InternationalHomeCinemaDay tag will be used in all posts relating to the event during its build-up and on the day itself.

With promotion taking place throughout the year leading up to the event, International Home Cinema Day will be celebrated across social media channels and in person via demonstration days. Installation companies and other industry stakeholders, such as distributors and manufacturers, will be encouraged to throw open their doors and engage with consumers so

they can gain hands-on experience of the latest systems and technologies by attending home cinema demonstrations.

Stuart Burgess, Director/Founder of the Home Cinema Alliance, says: “The aim of the HCA is to promote our industry in the best possible light and highlight to end users, as well as installation professionals, the power and potential of home cinema. Most consumers still don’t know just how good a home cinema can be and it’s our job to bring that excitement into their lives. I am already reaching out to trade

bodies such as RIBA and encouraging them to get involved, and this work will continue as we look to build International Home Cinema Day into a regular and powerful driver for the home cinema market.”

SOUND INTERNATIONAL ACQUIRES GOLDENEAR

Effective January 1, 2025, GoldenEar has joined Paradigm, Anthem, and MartinLogan and will operate under its new identity as GoldenEar Studio Inc. The brand will continue its legacy of delivering premium audio experiences while benefiting from PML Sound International’s expertise in innovation, engineering and manufacturing, said the brand’s new owner.

GoldenEar, known for its award-winning products such as the T66, Triton Reference, Triton One, SuperSub and other highperformance audio solutions, will become part of PML Sound International’s portfolio of premium audio brands. The acquisition leverages PML’s engineering expertise and manufacturing capabilities to enhance GoldenEar’s product offerings and market presence. smooth transition, GoldenEar temporarily paused business operations from January 1, 2025, to January 31, 2025. During this period, GoldenEar orders were not processed or fulfilled. PML’s business operations remained unaffected, and continued to deliver highquality audio products and customer service. While operations were temporarily paused during the integration, PML said customers can rest assured that their existing warranties and service support will be honoured. Normal service is now back up and running.

Building on the success of Niko Home Control

Built upon 100 years of experience in electrical solutions and 25 years in building automation, MOTIV leads the way in making spaces comfortable and smart.

MOTIV: ‘THE FUTURE OF HOME AUTOMATION’

EI spoke with Koen Pepermans, CEO of Wygwam, a recently created division within the Niko family, set up to promote the maker’s new home automation platform, MOTIV.

If a company were searching for a professional to head up a new push into the automated home sector, it would be a challenge to find a candidate more suitable than Koen Pepermans. In 1989, Koen launched his own installation/ integration company, which found success and after a merger with a U.S. company became Vantage Controls EMEA. This became part of the Legrand SA group in 2006, and Koen stayed on, leading the company. From 2017, Koen advised companies on cloud-based home automation and IoT and then took on a role as VP of Global Sales & Business Development at Coolautomation. In September 2023, he took on his new role at Wygwam.

Koen explains, “Niko is a hugely respected company with over 100 years in the market, producing first its high-quality range of switches and infrastructure products and then later becoming involved with automation via the Niko Home Control platform. In order to provide more speed and focus to the home automation side, a new division called Wygwam was founded.

“Our new identity as Wygwam enabled us to focus on adaptability and sustainability, meeting the changing demands of our customers while maintaining the reliability and quality Niko is known for. This new approach was needed to service the smart home market and expand our presence internationally with MOTIV. I am excited to be heading up this new venture as we firmly believe MOTIV has something new to offer and addresses many of the challenges smart home systems need to take on board.”

Koen argues that Niko’s time in the market and ability to deliver every part of a fully smart home—from wiring, sockets, switches, interfaces and home automation abilities via the Niko Home Control platform—make a big difference.

He says, “Whilst many home automation systems could be described as ‘front-end’, adding a layer of automation onto something that is already there, our approach is different. We build from the ground up, including complete systems that have intelligence built in even before the layer of home automation

is added. This gives MOTIV the power to be truly integrated into the way homes work and will develop in the future, making them more efficient and controllable.

“As new forms of power, such as solar and wind, come online, either created by the home or by the energy suppliers, homes need to be able to intelligently control power. This needs to happen automatically or give homeowners options to make choices in how their homes react to given situations.”

Koen explains, “MOTIV provides the ability to create efficiencies within a home, such as prioritising every system in the home. From a car charger to a pool heater to a cooker, MOTIV can instruct the home to draw the right amount of power at exactly the right time of day, creating truly efficient homes.

“MOTIV knows where you need to travel to tomorrow, knows that you are preparing a meal, knows what the temperature is outside, and automatically adjusts power scenarios to be super-efficient.”

Koen argues, “Home automation systems that sit on top of everything else struggle to do this. MOTIV, with its Niko Home Automation backbone, is sunk into the DNA of a building and can do it all. Perhaps it’s useful to think of MOTIV as a supercharged KNX. It can provide the backbone of a control system for a building. MOTIV then has its own automation abilities, but it is also compatible with systems like Control4, Crestron and others, if you have a customer who wants that interface. It’s a stand-alone system that’s easy to program, so we’re the perfect backbone for such front-end systems.

A mixture of wired and wireless options drawn from the MOTIV family—and indeed all of the Niko ranges—means installers have many options to suit each project. They can deliver control points both consumer-facing via wall-mounted interfaces, via the app on smart devices, or automatically via the maker’s range of sensors. The system is also billed as being very easy to install.

Koen says, “We know that some integrators prefer to leave the ‘infrastructure’ part of the installation to electrical contractors and then provide the automation element themselves. With MOTIV, you can confidently do that—any competent contractor can install the system’s backbone. However, for those installers who want to do it all, of course, you can do that. Electrical contractors who want to get into the smart home market also have a great friend in MOTIV.”

Koen has first-hand experience of how easy Niko systems are to install. “Recently, I had bought a new home. We had used KNX as we just wanted something simple and reliable. However, we were not happy with the level of control, so I decided to change it to Niko Home Control myself. We installed the new system in four days, which provided a much better experience—and this was before I had been trained properly on the system!”

But ease of install is just one side of the coin. Wygwam wanted MOTIV to deliver ease of use for users.

“Another strong point of the system is the ease of use,” says Koen. “I have had many potential customers say to me over the years that they don’t want home automation because it was hard to understand, and visitors could not work the system.

“MOTIV addresses this with new state-ofthe-art keypads that are aesthetically part of the infrastructure of the home but deliver genuine two-way, text-based interaction. The system tells people what is happening and what could happen, remaining melted into the background until someone approaches. These wallmounted units can also act as sensors, adding another level to their ability to feed information back to the users.”

So, MOTIV will come to market with considerable abilities. What about the future? Koen says, “We want to continue to add AI at a component level. The amount of connected homes we have in our home market of Belgium means we are learning exactly how homes are used, and the systems will learn with us

and deliver increasingly intuitive and natively automated results. We will also add to the systems that we are compatible with, such as multi-room music systems and other automation platforms. Niko is already compatible with over 100 brands, but we want to add to that.”

Koen concludes, “Ultimately, what we are talking about with MOTIV is a totally one-stop shop for building infrastructure and home automation. We will provide all the training and technical support needed to get on board, either direct or via value-added partners. Once integrators experience this new system, we are confident they will be impressed. We are here for the long haul to support the market. Niko is already over 100 years old; we will be around for a long time yet. We have the longevity and credibility to offer integrators something very compelling.”

MEET THE INSTALLERS

Taking stock and looking forward to another big year ahead.

A Saturday morning trip to the cinema seems like a treat that most people will have experienced in their lifetime, but for children with sensory, medical or mobility issues, this simple pleasure could represent a mammoth undertaking, one that might also be overwhelming for parents and carers. Witnessing the impact that a private cinema room can have on families meant that Ian Morrish was moved to make a positive change and Together for Cinema (TFC) was born. 2024 has been a huge year for TFC, with record numbers of installations taking place. Pairing integrators with local hospices and care facilities, is a very rewarding process. The impact that these projects have on the hospices and the people that use their services is immeasurable, but there is also a huge impact on the integrators and installers that work so hard to deliver for the children and families that rely on their care and support.

One such venue was Dougie Mac, a children’s hospice in Staffordshire. Dougie Mac offers many support services, including palliative care and focusses on ensuring that children, young

adults and adults with life limiting conditions can enjoy themselves in safety and comfort.

Families enjoying the new cinema room mention the freedom to relax without worrying about disturbing anyone and the space for wheelchairs that the new room provides. This has meant that they can all have fun watching a movie and relax together. The cinema room is part of a range of play and relaxation rooms available to families, and it has made a big impact since being installed by Andy Bell of Trusted Technology and Sinemas. For Andy, delivering these results was a chance to give something back to his local community.

“The team at the Hospice explained that the children loved to look at the stars through a skylight in the Hospice roof,” he says. “Hearing this struck a chord and we all decided to work hard to lower the ceiling height and install a Starscape ceiling in the cinema room. Everyone worked together and we completed the room in just four weeks, we know it is going to provide years of fun for everyone at Dougie Mac.”

For others, it is the escapism that makes a visit to the cinema room a must. In the Milton Hospice, part of the East Anglia Children’s Hospice group (EACH), the cinema room is used not only for films, but for music therapy, creating memories and providing a safe, welcoming space for everyone that uses it. Ian, Aaron and their team from thinkingbricks knew, as soon as they met the staff at EACH Milton, that the cinema room needed to be high-tech, but super simple. They went above and beyond to source equipment that would need minimal maintenance and simple button pushes to operate. It is a solution that has been a huge success, as Aaron explains.

“The room needed some upgrades, and we wanted to focus on making everything as user friendly as possible, so we added the option of the ‘Big Red Button’ remote,” he says. “This gives families access to the system in a very simple way. We have a single, laminated page of instructions, so now anyone can relax and enjoy The Den, it has been such a pleasure to work with everyone on this project.”

SPECIAL MEANING

Sometimes the installers are really local to the charities, so the projects take on even more personal meaning. For Team Jak’s new cinema room in Livingstone, Scotland, the installer was Stuart Lillis, who lived just a few miles from Jak’s Den and was very familiar with the story of the space and the work that they did, his daughter even owned merchandise! When the opportunity arose to help them, he jumped at the chance, completing the installation himself.

“I knew that the proposed deadline was going to be right in a busy time for Team Jak, so we shifted things up, the timeline made things a little more intense, but it was more than worth it,” Stuart recalls. “Being able to drop in has allowed me to see the impact of the space first hand and I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t shed a tear

or two on the way home, they really are bringing a little magic into people’s lives who need it.”

The AV industry is full of passionate people who go above and beyond to bring a project to a positive conclusion and our final installer is no exception. The ellenor children’s hospice charity in Gravesend had embarked upon a building project that would enlarge their facility and give them the space for a new cinema room. Working purely from the architect’s plans, installer Iain Martin, of iCubed Home Cinema was able to design a room that would meet the needs of the charity perfectly. In this case, that included a large 98in TV screen, shooting star side panels and top of the range audio. The room was the 50th completed project for TFC, making it even more special for the team who made it all possible.

“Being the 50th room made it even more special,” Iain Martin explains. “I can’t do what the amazing staff and volunteers do at ellenor, but I can do this and give the kids an opportunity to smile. It is so heart-warming to think of all the people across the AV industry that answered our requests for donations of time, equipment or materials with ‘how can we help?’ or ‘what do you need?’ I thank them all from the bottom of my heart for helping create this wonderful room.

If hearing these stories makes you think that you have something to offer Together for cinema, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. There are so many ways to help put a smile on someone’s face, and your own! From becoming a charitable partner, to assisting on a local installation, we would love to hear from you, so please drop Ian Morrish a line to find out more.

BRAVO FOR SONY BRAVIA 9?

Our intrepid trade-focused reviewer Richard Stevenson gets his hands – and eyes – on the much anticipated Sony Bravia 9 (VPL-XW8100ES) projector.

Sony’s previous generation VPL-XW7000ES projector put the brand head-to-head with JVC’s finest cinema beamers, thanks largely to the introduction of dynamic tone mapping to rival JVC’s best. It was a very good projector. I know, I bought one. Only marginally frustrating then, we bring you the latest VPL-XW8100ES as it upgrades pretty much everything.

OK, the case, remote control and fabulous all-glass lens assembly remain unchanged.

The shape gives the Bravia 9 Projector, as it’s known to friends and sales staff, the same endon-look as the back of a Star Wars Imperial Destroyer… which, we can all admit, would have been a better name than nicking a moniker from Sony’s TV range. The mounting points are also identical, offering a very simple upgrade for well-heeled customers, as the XW8100 has gained a significant £10K on its retail price.

Specification-wise, while 3D support has finally been deleted, you get twin HDMIs with 4K/120Hz compatibility and a low latency mode to keep gamers happy. This model gets another 200 lumens to raise the bar to 3400 maximum brightness, and a contrast ratio nearly doubled to 15000:1. Interestingly, noise is down to 22dB, from 26 dB of the 7000, and it’s noticeably much quieter than its predecessor

when the laser engine is cranked up to 100%/ maximum output.

That allows you to use more of the Bravia 9’s full brightness capabilities without the fans ramping up to take-off velocity, making that small on-paper jump in lumens considerably greater in practical reality. Moreover, in testing, at the same relative brightness, the XW8100 runs considerably cooler than its predecessor, which will be a boon to boxed projector installations or smaller well-insulated rooms where AV heat build-up is an issue.

Driving all these top-line performance enhancements is Sony’s powerful new XR Processor. With tech borrowed from the brand’s flagship TVs (hence the Bravia name), this brings features like XR Dynamic Tone Mapping, XR Deep Black and XR Triluminos Pro – all of which work to optimise HDR content, enhance black levels, and expand the colour spectrum very effectively.

On the control side, the Bravia 9 supports integration with the majority of mainstream home automation platforms, including Control4, Crestron, Savant and AMX, and Sony says IP control capabilities have also been improved, providing more robust and reliable network integration. It is fully compatible with

Domotz network management (for IT geeks) and Snap One’s cloud-based management and monitoring platform, OvrC (for integrators).

Weighing in at a svelte 14kg, the Sony is not onerous to mount and uses the same symmetric bolt pattern central to the lens for easy alignment. Not that this is an issue for getting the image to hit the screen squarely because the motorised lens assembly offers a whopping +/80% vertical and +/- 31% horizontal lens shift! Given Sony’s heritage in imaging, no surprise there is nothing but praise to be lavished on the lens cluster and its optical properties.

EVERYTHING BETTER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE

I said earlier that this model upgrades ‘pretty much’ everything… because the single 12v trigger is still only an output. That is great for triggering screen masking, which is used in very few installations. Yet it is absolutely useless if you want the projector to boot up automatically when the AVR is powered on. As there is no CEC control over HDMI either, unless the installation has a full home control system, then end users (like me) are going to be juggling multiple remotes at start-up. To quote my wife

prior to the technology and automation-themed Wallace and Gromit movie at Christmas, “Wow, 26 grand, and it doesn’t power on automatically”. She then gave me a Gromit-like raised eyebrow.

Out of the box, the ‘Preset’ RGB panel alignment needed the finest tweaking to bring the Red and Blue panels perfectly in line with the Green at the centre cross. Drift to the edges of the test pattern is barely visible on a 3m screen. Focus is fully motorised and nicely granular, but still requires good eyesight and your nose on the screen to get it pixel perfect. Going back to Sony’s imaging expertise, why there isn’t an autofocus system on a projector at this level is a mystery to me.

The set-up menus incorporate nine picture presets, including IMAX-Enhanced, and a userconfigured picture mode. All presets can be tweaked with variable gradation smoothing, gamma correction in 10 steps, and a suite of Sony proprietary twiddles. These include True Cinema (frame rate sync, reduction in motion interpolation and cinema-like picture), Motionflow (frame-by-frame processing to reduce motion blur and deliver cinema-like feel), Cinema Black Pro (Iris and lamp control to enhance black levels and contrast) and Sony’s Reality Creation. The latter is Sony’s take on 4K upscaling, detail enhancement and noise reduction… not bringing Jessica Rabbit to life in the room, which is a shame.

Many installers make additional revenue from calibration services, and for this Sony has no shortage of advanced picture-fettering options, allowing for anything up to full ISF goodness. I am not a huge fan of set calibration parameters, however, as I prefer the subjective approach to picture balance. After all, one man’s visual perfection may be another man’s oversaturated cartoon-like image.

Moreover, Sony baseline presets are perhaps the most balanced and usable ‘outof-the-box’ suite of image settings I have

seen from a projector. I could live with Cinema 1 and IMAX Enhanced without touching another setting. Even traditionally ‘out-there’ settings like Game is well-gauged and relatively restrained. Ironically, the only one I didn’t vibe with was Reference. After the frankly amazing brightness, natural colour and stunning contrast of IMAX Enhanced mode, Reference mode looks a bit, well, dull.

Overall the image quality is another solid step up in Sony’s video projection game, with near TV-like brightness, colour and contrast (in a dark room), silky smooth image processing and incredible detail even in the depth of shadow or super-bright areas. The image upgrade is most noticeable side-by-side with its forebear, which produces a more muted and slightly ‘greyer’ image by comparison. The reduced noise and reduced heat output from the vents are also a fabulous addition to its USPs, particularly when talking to potential upgrade customers with a 7000ES in place.

My micro-gripe about the 12v trigger aside, the Bravia 9 projector is as flexible as they come, supports all the mainstream formats (save Dolby Vision, and that is a moot point given the impressive native HDR and dynamic tone mapping), has upped its gaming game, and delivers a class-leading image at the price. I wonder if Sony will notice if I slip my old 7000ES in the sample return box.

LUTRON RADIORA3 LAUNCH IS MAJOR OPPORTUNITY FOR INTEGRATORS

Providing a new price point for high-functioning intelligent lighting and shading, RadioRA3 marks a major milestone for the company and offers huge potential for the expansion of the platform into many more projects. Pulse Cinemas explains the concept.

Offering fresh innovation for integrators, homeowners and related professions such as interior designers and developers, Lutron recently revealed its new RadioRA3 system at a packed event in the Science Museum in London. Many top Lutron executives from around the world involved in the development of the new product flew in for the event, joining the UK team and underlining the importance of this new initiative for the company.

This launch is a huge step forward for the UK’s retrofit lighting market as traditionally wired homes and high-end luxury apartments now have the ability to add whole home smart lighting control where either RA2 Select or HomeWorks wasn’t an option previously due to budgetary or other project-based reasons.

Providing a ‘middle ground’ for luxury new homes and renovations is designed to open the concept of intelligent lighting and shading to a wider audience with a distinctly UK/European angle to the style and approach of the systems.

Oliver Deakin-Faux, Senior Sales Specialist at Pulse Cinemas, says, “Lutron RadioRA3 is

the most exciting launch from the company in a very long time. The seamlessly elegant Vierti Hybrid keypad is not just your wall control but also your dimmer built in. This is a complete game changer and will open so many more opportunities for dealers, not only for whole home lighting solutions but also single room solutions such as media rooms and cinema rooms. We are very excited to get started and will be offering training and support to get dealers up and running.”

SYSTEM DETAILS

RadioRA3 has been created to sit between RA2 Select and the HomeWorks systems. Designed specifically for and only available to integrators, a major attraction of the system is its scalability. It can support up to 400 devices (200 Type A + 200 Type X). Like the Type A version of Lutron’s Clear Connect wireless technology, Type X is known for its reliability. First introduced in the U.S market four years ago, the full power of this Lutron technology is now available to Pulse Cinemas customers.

A major aspect of the new launch is the new range of elegant Vierti keypads. They look fantastic and deliver sleek, tactile functionality that homeowners and interior designers will love.

Vierti has been created with significant input from the European and UK market and has taken inspiration from luminaries such as the Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture. Fully embracing the Bauhaus concept of ‘form follows function’, the keypads offer a simple, authentic experience hitting key aesthetic principles such as remaining very close to the wall to deliver a sleek finish (just 3mm).

Vierti offers a range of attractive finishes, with two polymer options along with popular metals from the Alisse range that use a solid brass faceplate to give a premium and luxury feel. The choice of finishes and colours will provide any home, modern or period, with exactly the right look and feel. Vierti is offered in two options: a hybrid dimmer/keypad and a keypad-only model.

The hybrid keypad (with an in-built dimmer) is important as it offers the ability to retrofit with ease. Integrators simply swap out standard single toggle switches with the new Lutron system, with no major rewiring required, removing many of the common objections from end users who don’t want the ‘fuss’ of a major works programme. In some cases, days become hours. Vierti also delivers large, engraved buttons that offer intuitive and ergonomic use, complete with status LEDs providing clear feedback. Lutron is keen to ensure that all these new keypads ship with engraving already completed, so the order process involves signifying which options to include before the items are sent. Options include a set of ‘standard’ engravings, in either ‘Morning, Afternoon, Evening, Off’ or ‘Bright, Medium, Low, Off’ but, of course, custom engraving is offered as well.

Oliver adds, “The direction Lutron has taken with two options of pre-defined engravings is a bold one, but one I completely agree with. It eliminates the project delays over engraving conversations and gives the keypad a complete solution from day of install.”

FULL COLOUR RGB + TUNABLE WHITE LUMARIS TAPE LIGHTING

Another hugely important part of the launch is a first from Lutron. Lumaris is a native RGB + Tunable White solution and delivers impressive flexibility and functionality, with tunable white and RGB capabilities. This new set of options allows integrators and homeowners to create just the right mood for every room and occasion. For those who love the warm, cosy glow of traditional dimmed lighting, it also features warm dim functionality.

Getting an effective tape lighting system up and running can be a challenge involving products from different makers—power from one, tape from another, control from yet another. What is great here is that Lumaris offers a complete solution for all the components required, including extrusions, and is natively compatible with the whole of the RadioRA3 system. All integrators need to deliver is the mains power drop where the tape will be installed and Lutron delivers everything else. Each reel of tape also comes with pre-soldered leads and from there, solderless connectors make field connections simple and efficient. It’s also the first system from the maker delivering 0.1% dimming precision, offering smooth, precise control.

Programming Lumaris and the entire RadioRA3 system is done from Lutron’s PC-based programming software, and of course, there is a fully featured app to allow homeowners or integrators to make adjustments on or off-site, creating the perfect mood for relaxing, entertaining, dining, or any occasion. In a similar vein to the HomeWorks software, dealers can also deploy programming changes remotely from anywhere in the world saving time on site visits.

It is also worth noting that RadioRA3 is compatible with all of Lutron’s wireless window treatments such as the Palladiom Wire Free and Triathlon range.

Oliver underlines, “When specifying smart lighting systems, window treatments are often forgotten or left out of proposals but are a vital element of controlling the natural light within a space to give a complete solution. Also, this is a great way to add additional revenue to any single room or whole house project. Speak to us about becoming qualified in Lutron’s window treatments.”

TRAINING FOR RADIORA3

Oliver explains, “The training programme for this new system has been carefully designed in full partnership with distribution channels, and we are very excited to start this path of giving more of our customers the ability to leverage this new platform.”

It’s important to know that all the training is done in-person and lasts a full day. Completion of the training delivers a basic RadioRA3 system to ‘live with’ and really get to know, providing confidence in the platform’s ability. Dealers who complete the course will be listed on a dedicated Lutron site for RadioRA3, helping to create new leads as consumers search for solutions for their homes.

The course costs are £450.00 + VAT for the day, however within this, dealers will also receive a starter kit that includes three circuits of lighting and control.

The first training date starts February 21 with additional dates in March and will be held at Lutron’s Experience Centre in London with regional dates to follow. Get in touch to find out more!

LOUDSPEAKER CATEGORY CONTINUES TO DIVERSIFY

Jason Knott, EI’s resident number cruncher, ex CE-Pro Editor and data solutions architect evangelist at D-Tools, takes a look at the speaker category.

It’s human nature to want the latest and greatest toys… the shiny new car, mobile phone, computer, etc. The same is certainly true in the smart home space. New categories of equipment, such as lighting, shades, automation and massive TVs, have sprung up over the past several decades to monopolise the home-technology limelight.

But through it all, the old mainstay category of audio, led by loudspeakers, has continued to be the bread-and-butter equipment category for many integration companies. Thus, the speaker category continues to be ‘sweet music’ to the ears and wallets of custom integrators worldwide. Indeed, many integrators can attribute demand from customers for a home audio speaker solution as a primary driver of new business. There is a reason that so many integration companies have the word ‘audio’ in their brand name!

But the loudspeaker category itself has also evolved and diversified. Years ago, if someone mentioned the word ‘loudspeaker,’ the only product that came to mind was a standalone freestanding or bookshelf speaker. While that subcategory is still vibrant, the advent of architectural loudspeakers -- consisting of in-ceiling and in-wall products -- followed by the development of soundbars and outdoor speakers has kept the loudspeaker category king of the hill.

NEW INSIGHTS

That is confirmed by new data taken from nearly 43,000 signed installation contracts in D-Tools Cloud software during a 12-month period from September 1, 2023 through July 31, 2024.

According to the data, architectural speakers now make up the largest audio subcategory sold by integrators. When you combine both in-ceiling (27%) and in-wall (12%), it equals nearly four out of every 10 speakers sold and installed. However, that percentage devoted to architectural speaker solutions is likely even higher because a portion of subwoofer sales are surely also in-wall solutions. (The data dump did not break out that distinction.)

The demand for in-ceiling and in-wall solutions indicates a preference for discreet, aesthetically pleasing audio solutions that integrate seamlessly into home designs without the need for visible speakers taking up floor or shelf space. The popularity of architectural speakers underscores a shift in consumer preferences toward hidden technology that blends with home décor while delivering highquality sound. Small-aperture and invisible speakers technology will likely continue to spur the demand for discreet audio solutions.

Remarkably, standalone loudspeakers, which typically are freestanding tower, floor or bookshelf units, still represent a big chunk of sales. In all, 28% of loudspeakers unit sales in the integration channel come from that freestanding subcategory, which also includes ‘other’ types of speakers such as portable solutions. This shows there is still strong demand for traditional loudspeakers, especially among audiophiles and customers who prioritise sound quality over minimalism.

Finally, the demand for subwoofers, soundbars and outdoor solutions is noteworthy. Subwoofers have moved beyond just being for a dedicated home theatre space to other rooms

of the home. Outdoor living was given a shot in the arm from the COVID pandemic and this segment can be lucrative for integrators. Lastly, soundbar demand will continue to grow as long as TVs get bigger. As one pundit said, “TVs have never looked so good and sounded so bad”. Soundbars solve that problem.

So, what does all this mean in terms of revenues for integrators? According to the D-Tools Cloud data derived from actual sales, integrators sold £1.74 billion pounds (or $2.16 billion dollars) in loudspeakers during that previously noted 12-month timeframe. Remember, that is just from speakers. The associated equipment sales from audio sources, amplifiers, acoustical treatments and audio distribution solutions spike the revenue from the overall audio category much higher.

The lesson for integrators behind this new data is not to forsake the tried-and-true, consistent demand that comes from customers for loudspeakers, even while you explore other avenues of equipment revenue.

A NEW WAVE IN SUPERYACHT SOUND

Nick Fichte, Business Development Director, L-Acoustics Home & Yacht, explores the latest trends in luxury marine AV systems and how cutting-edge technologies are transforming the superyacht experience.

Yachts have long been symbols of luxury and exclusivity, but their role in the lives of owners and charter guests is evolving. These vessels are no longer simply a means of travel or private retreats; they have become entertainment havens on a far grander scale. Superyachts are often staffed by dedicated teams to ensure they run smoothly and deliver an experience more akin to a luxury hotel than a home. When chartered, they become exclusive spaces for guests who expect a seamless blend of comfort, amenities, and entertainment.

Music, long a staple of yacht living, is moving from

providing a simple background ambiance to becoming a more versatile feature of the onboard experience for today’s yacht owners and guests. What better way to enhance the joy of music than by sharing it with family and friends, in a way that’s designed to deliver unforgettable experiences. Whether it’s live performances from bands or DJs, immersive movie nights, or creating the ideal conditions to give speeches at events, the expectation levels for audio have risen. These demands extend beyond traditional capabilities, with an increasing need for high-performance, adaptable sound systems that also integrate seamlessly into the unique environment of a yacht.

For example, a forward lounge might transition from a relaxed space for wellness or yoga to a dynamic venue for parties or a state-of-the-art cinema. In such cases, traditional audio setups often fall short, unable to accommodate the diverse needs of these multi-functional spaces.

Enter hyper-real immersive audio technology, such as L-Acoustics’ HYRISS (Hyperreal Immersive Sound Space). By offering adaptable soundscapes tailored to the use of each space, L-Acoustics can now bring unmatched flexibility to the on-board audio experience with this technology.

Integrating robust and reliable sound systems into marine environments poses unique challenges. Limited space, stringent weight requirements and the harsh marine climate all demand specialised solutions. Network-based audio systems are stepping up to address these hurdles. By adopting Audio over IP (AoIP) protocols, like AES67, integrators can streamline cabling, reduce installation time and optimise space usage. For instance, L-Acoustics’ LA 7.16i amplifier can handle 16 channels at 1,300W per channel in a compact 2U chassis. This innovation minimises weight and frees up valuable space on board, all while delivering the power needed to drive a sophisticated audio system.

ALL ABOARD!

Additionally, centralised or localised placement of amplifiers, enabled by networked solutions, allows for efficient audio distribution across the vessel. This approach simplifies installation and ensures the system is both user-friendly and reliable.

The success of any marine sound system lies not only in the hardware but in the expertise behind its integration. Advanced modelling

tools, such as L-Acoustics’ proprietary Soundvision software, allow for precise planning and calibration, ensuring every yacht space delivers exceptional sound quality.

“When choosing the best audio solutions for our most discerning clients, looking to our partner at L-Acoustics is an easy decision. Leveraging the AES67 protocol, we can keep all our audio signals in the digital realmsaving on valuable labour time whilst reducing potential points of failure in the signal chain.

Additionally, having 16 channels of highpower amplification in a 2U footprint allows us to commission a top-performance system with minimal rack space; a key factor in cases where rack space real estate is at a premium,” comments Jesse Berardi, Director of Design and Engineering at Audio Video Systems, New York.

“We put our confidence in L-Acoustics engineers to configure and calibrate their components, ensuring that the final product is a ‘factory approved’ end result, with repeatable and impressive capability each time,” continues Jesse.

By combining cutting-edge technology with expert support from L-Acoustics, integrators can deliver tailored solutions that meet the unique demands of marine environments. These systems not only provide unparalleled performance but also enhance the luxury experience for yacht owners and guests.

The luxury marine sector is embracing a future where audio-visual systems do more than simply entertain; they create unforgettable experiences. The modern superyacht is no longer just a vessel; it’s a destination. With innovations like HYRISS and advancements in networked audio, yacht AV is entering a new era of efficiency, flexibility and sophistication. Through collaboration and the latest in AV technology, integrators can help their clients craft spaces that redefine luxury and entertainment on the water.

MARINE AUDIO –WHERE LUXURY MEETS SIMPLICITY

Barry Sheldrick, Director of Sales at DbM and Jetty De Koster, Brand Ambassador for nexgentec audio, explain.

The marine market is an established one, where integrators have long been familiar with the complexities of installing systems on vessels. The challenges are numerous – from weight and space constraints to issues around heat management, serviceability and fire safety. With this in mind, the focus for integrators isn’t just about finding systems that work, it’s about sourcing solutions that are specifically designed to meet the unique demands of life at sea.

In high-end marine environments, users’ expectations go beyond functionality. The goal is to create a seamless, unified experience for guests. The reality is that guests want to watch TV, listen to music and control the lighting in their cabin with minimal effort, and they expect uniformity in how systems perform. If one room’s system lags behind, it can feel like something is broken, even if it’s just a minor delay. With audio over IP solutions, integrators can ensure a harmonious experience.

Another key point of focus is simplicity in control. The ideal system is robust, intuitive, and, above all, uncomplicated. It should be invisible in its operation, allowing the user to enjoy their environment without being bogged down with options that seem irrelevant. Nobody wants a system full of features they don’t need. Audio over IP offers the integrator straightforward configuration of the system to provide exactly what is required for each zone.

One of the luxuries of a high-end audio over IP system is that it can deliver exceptional sound quality, even at lower volume levels. In many spaces, like a cabin or a lounge, people don’t always want to crank up the volume. But with a smart audio system, you can still enjoy a full, balanced sound without needing the system to be at full power.

This fine-tuned audio performance is something yacht owners and guests increasingly

appreciate, even if they may not always notice it consciously. Just as we expect lighting to mimic the natural daylight cycle, there’s a growing desire for audio systems that provide a natural listening experience, no matter where you are on the ship. Whether you’re on the deck, in the saloon, or in a cabin, the goal is a consistent, high-quality sound experience that complements the environment rather than distracts from it.

In the fast-paced world of luxury yachts, time is of the essence. When something goes wrong, you can’t afford to wait for a technician to board the vessel and solve the issue. This is where remote support becomes a game-changer. With the advancement of audio over IP systems, integrators can offer remote diagnostics and support, saving owners and crews time and reducing costly downtime.

KEEPING PACE

Through remote access, electro-technical officers (ETOs) and integrators can detect problems before the owner or guest even notices them. If a fault arises, the system can alert the ETO, who can address the issue, ensuring that everything is up and running smoothly without the need for a physical presence on board. Additionally, if a new guest or charter group is about to board, the integrator can perform a quick remote check, verifying that all systems are functioning as expected. This capability greatly enhances the luxury experience for guests, who will be blissfully unaware of the behind-the-scenes troubleshooting.

The speed and efficiency of refitting are essential considerations for yacht owners. With vessels that travel worldwide and undergo frequent maintenance or upgrades, ensuring that systems are easy to modify is crucial. Audio over IP technology offers a significant advantage in this area.

In the past, refitting an audio system required tracing cables, replacing hardware, and potentially disrupting other systems on the boat. Today, with software-defined matrices and IP-based systems, integrators can easily map out and modify audio configurations from a simple network connection.

This process eliminates the need for complicated rewiring, significantly cutting

down the time and cost of refits. Systems can be customised and optimised according to the owner’s preferences without major disruptions, and new components can be integrated seamlessly into the existing infrastructure.

The marine market has seen a shift towards more efficient, reliable, and userfriendly solutions, driven by the adoption of audio over IP technology. This transition is

not only transforming the way audio systems are deployed on superyachts but is also laying the groundwork for similar innovations in the residential sector. As yacht owners and their guests demand higher levels of luxury and convenience, integrators are stepping up with systems that offer simplicity, quality and durability – all while ensuring seamless remote support and easy upgrades.

Efficiency, ease of use and off-board access are key deliverables
Fast refits are a major boon that integrators can deliver

CLEVER CLIMATES?

Eagled eared trade-focused reviewer Richard Stevenson takes a listen to these weatherproof indoor/outdoor speakers packed with clever installer-friendly features.

Monitor Audio has been in the on-wall indoor/ outdoor loudspeaker market for almost two decades, so it knows about rocking the patio or your local bar. The Climate CL2 series fetters that expertise into two new models based on a 5in driver in the CL2 S and the 6in driver CLS2 M we have here.

The glass fibre-reinforced ABS cabinet in matt white or matt black, complete with an IP rating and UV protection, is straight out of the outdoor speaker playlist. Yet that is where the similarities between the CL2 and the plethora of other outdoor speakers we have tested end. Their IP-66 rating is unusually high ingress protection for a speaker, the five-year warranty shows the brand’s faith in the product’s longevity, and they come supplied in pairs, making the £750 retail ticket for two of the CLS2 M’s something of a bargain.

But before we dive into the speaker itself, let’s talk about the outstanding ‘Quik-Link’ bracket supplied. This is not something one usually gets excited about given the typical pressed steel U-bracket in this sector, but the Climate bracket is genius.

It’s a seriously robust aluminium casting that is powder coated for durability and has four screw mount points for serious ‘not-comingdown’ appeal. There is pre-wired internal cable routing with Wago-style speed clip terminals for the incoming signal, a rubber cover to seal the connections and a coaxial signal connector concealed in the pivot/mount. At the rear of the bracket there are multiple incoming routing options for incoming signal cables running through the wall or on the wall.

The speaker attaches to the notched pivot mount and is locked firmly in place with a long Torx T25 head bolt with a large pan head. The bracket can be mounted vertically or horizontally with the bracket pointing left, right, up or down, and offers 180 degrees of speaker ‘tilt’ in 11ish degrees steps. Simply bolt it on the wall, clip in the speaker cable, close the rubber cover seal, place the speaker, pivot to the desired direction, and tighten the bolt. Job done and it looks incredible. Brilliant!

The CL2 M speaker itself is not far behind in innovation, either. According to the paper specs, it is a two-way design with ABR porting to avoid

having a hole in the cabinet that could let in water or, speaking from experience, nest hornets.

Yet the drivers are MA’s bespoke 152mm RST II (Rigid Surface Technology) bass-mid unit married to an equally custom-designed 25mm C-CAM (Ceramic-Coated Aluminium/ Magnesium) Black dome tweeter. The unique ABR implementation is essentially the entire rear panel area with a suspended hex-printed (giving it RST-like properties) radiator plate.

AROUND THE FRONT

The front baffle has a neat step around the perimeter to match the step of the ABR roll surround groove, both highlighted in grey. The design is very slick, and the CL2 is the bestlooking multi-use speaker aesthetic I have seen. I can see the soft, cable-free look being highly appealing to residential customers and premium public venues.

The specification reads 42Hz -30Hz (on wall), 100W continuous/200W peak power handling, 85.5dB/W sensitivity, and a nominal 6-ohm impedance. The Maximum Peak SPL (AES75, Z-weighted) is an impressive 110dB.

The ABR, facing backwards and close to the wall, gives a good 3dB gain in the LF region, helping to provide the sound richness and punch - particularly useful in outdoor scenarios where LF seems to evaporate. Installed at a floor/ceiling junction indoors, it will double that gain, allowing these relatively compact speakers to deliver bass like a much larger unit. Ideal for pubs and restaurants? I think so!

Indoor/outdoor speaker tuning is always a balancing act. Outside, without walls or ceilings to bounce sound, you need a speaker with high HF output and wide dispersion. That combination can easily sound bright and lively indoors. With all, coping with indoor/outdoor

performance demands is a serious challenge – HF energy playing acoustic pinball. I have found dual-purpose speakers need an HF compensator switch to get the best from both environments. The Climate series does not have that facility… but doesn’t seem to need it.

I won’t lie; testing speakers outdoors in January’s arctic frosts wasn’t fun. So, I mounted a pair of CL2 M on lengths of 100 x 50mm timber with long cables so I could do the Hokey Cokey and test them in, out, in out – dodging frostbite and angsty polar bears. This left me frankly baffled about how MA has made a speaker that sounds so good in a room and on the patio without any HF tweaking between.

Indoors, the CL2 M punch well above their price point if considered a ‘bookshelf’ speaker, driving weighty bass tunes with impressive energy and dynamics. The HF is upfront enough to deliver in-fill and background at low levels but never aggressive at higher volumes, and the dispersion is wide enough not to cause hot spots. Give them volume, and the whole design works cohesively with the ABR, adding real substance to the sound.

Outside, they gain fabulously spacious air and imaging, and the HF doesn’t fade too much with distance from the speaker. Again, the ABR and close-to-wall location deliver decent outdoor bass and richness for music. The CL2 M keeps a nice balance at lower volumes if there is an issue of disturbing the neighbours. My neighbours never complain (because sheep like rock n roll, to paraphrase Keith Moon), so the CL2 Ms got some party-level action. They manage that remarkably well for a small speaker, keeping a good balance even at over 100dB @

1m sound pressure. You can’t say that about too many dedicated indoor bookshelf speakers at this price, let alone an IP-66, UV-protected indoor/outdoor one.

I can’t say I have ever seen a better designed, well-thought-through multi-use speaker - and certainly not one that sounds as good as the CLS2 M at their frankly ludicrous £375 each. This is at retail, including VAT and the best bracket in the business at any price! The smaller CLS2 S comes in at £300 each, but unless you are really tight for space on the project, the ‘M’ sets the gold standard for affordable indoor/ outdoor speakers by a country mile.

DBM DELIVERS IMMERSIVE AND HIGH-QUALITY OUTDOOR AUDIO EXPERIENCES

Barry Sheldrick, Director of Sales at DbM, and Jose Coelho, International Business Director for Ambisonic Systems, lay the ground work.

The two of us sat down to talk about this topic this time last year, and at that point, we discussed how many integrators weren’t considering outdoor AV for their clients. Things have since moved forward and we have noticed the growing trend of integrating outdoor audio into the full package of home automation and AV systems. Homeowners now expect the same level of comfort and sophistication they enjoy indoors. Whether it’s for relaxing by the pool, hosting a party in the garden, or enjoying a quiet evening under the stars, outdoor audio is quickly becoming a key component of the modern home.

In general, audio has started to be recognised as being just as crucial as lighting in creating the ideal atmosphere in homes and gardens. This shift in mindset sees more people appreciating the value of well-crafted audio systems that complement their outdoor environments. In the same way that you design lighting schemes using different light sources and colour temperatures to create mood and zone-specific areas, we can now set scenes with audio to enhance the overall experience in outdoor spaces.

For a long time, outdoor audio meant little more than a Bluetooth speaker placed on a garden table, which has always confused us as it would never be considered sufficient inside

the home. Thankfully, this has changed and now, as homeowners increasingly invest in high-end landscaping, swimming pools, outdoor gyms and play areas, they’re beginning to see the value of audio as a key component.

Once the idea of outdoor sound is introduced to a customer, the mindset – and budget – begins to shift. Homeowners who would never think of using a cheap Bluetooth speaker inside are now considering larger, more refined systems for their gardens. They start to understand that, just like inside their homes, the outdoor audio experience can be immersive, high-quality and tailored to their lifestyle. This is

the shift that has driven a significant change in our approach to outdoor AV.

Ambisonic and DbM find that the most effective way to showcase outdoor audio is through demonstration. While indoor showrooms are a staple of showcasing cinema rooms and AV systems, there are fewer options for showing off outdoor systems. That’s why we often bring our solutions directly to the client’s home – a simple 2.1 system does the trick. Standing with the customer and the integrator in the space where they will be enjoying the audio is far more impactful than anything we can demonstrate inside.

Customers are generally blown away when they hear the clarity and detail of the highperforming outdoor system. They can’t believe such rich, detailed sound is possible in their garden. More importantly, they begin to realise that outdoor audio can be just as sophisticated as the systems inside their homes.

GROWING CONFIDENCE

Of course, outdoor audio comes with its own set of challenges. One of the most important considerations is how to minimise noise spill into neighbouring properties. No one wants to create a disruptive experience for their neighbours and this is where choosing the right speaker technology becomes crucial.

The Ambisonic range offers specific directivity patterns. These speakers allow us to direct sound precisely where it’s neededwhile limiting the sound spill into other areas.

By using products that focus sound effectively, we can deliver high-quality audio without causing disturbance to those outside the targeted zones.

A key part of this is demonstrating the sound dispersion to the client. We show them how the volume levels drop off as they move outside the designated listening area, which gives them confidence that they can enjoy an amazing audio experience without worrying about their neighbours.

When designing outdoor systems, it’s important to approach the space with the same attention to detail as you would with an indoor system. It’s not about covering every square meter of the garden with sound; it’s about understanding how the client will use the space. Once we’ve identified these areas, we can tailor the audio system to match their needs through the DbM Design and Specification Service.

We typically offer three levels of audio performance:

1. Standard: This is ideal for background music, providing moderate volume with great fidelity. It’s a more cost-effective solution and is perfect for clients who want to create an ambient atmosphere.

2. Performance: For those who want more volume – maybe for hosting gatherings or small parties – we add additional speakers and subwoofers to increase sound coverage and bass response.

3. Reference: For clients who desire highperformance audio for large gatherings, we can scale up the system even further, adding more speakers and subwoofers to achieve full concert-level sound.

We also provide detailed wiring diagrams, as outdoor audio systems often require different configurations compared to indoor setups. This level of detail ensures that integrators can implement the design smoothly and that clients can visualise exactly how the system will work before installation begins.

We work closely with the integrators to ensure they fully understand what’s possible and how they can scale the system to meet the client’s needs. The goal is to offer a solution that balances budget with performance, ensuring the system delivers a high-quality experience no matter the size of the space.

IN THIS GARDEN

Will Uttley, Managing Director at ProofVision, examines the growth in exterior living.

Over the last few years, consumers have been extending their living spaces to include the outside, blurring the lines between the lounge, kitchen and garden areas and incorporating the latest technology to enhance their experiences.

ProofVision has over a decade of experience in designing waterproof and weatherproof electronics, with outdoor TVs, bathroom TVs, TV enclosures, and in-wall electric toothbrush chargers included in its portfolio.

ADVANCED FUNCTIONALITY

Outdoor televisions have improved significantly to match the functionality offered by the latest smart TVs that are designed for indoor usage. Premium outdoor TVs now benefit from WebOS-powered Smart TV functionality, meaning users can easily access a variety of apps such as Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+ and Amazon Prime. Additionally, models that boast IP control and drivers allow for a simple integration of the outdoor TV with other automation systems for the ultimate outdoor entertainment experience.

To ensure TV screens remain clear and visible even in daylight hours, outdoor models often benefit from anti-glare screens and higher brightness levels of up to 1,000 nits. Additionally, models with 4K UHD resolution provide four times the resolution of standard full HD for a much sharper image, while High Dynamic Range (HDR) support enhances the picture quality even further with vivid colours and improved contrast for a more realistic and dynamic viewing experience.

AV installation specialists should highlight the availability of smart outdoor tech to their customers, stipulating the differences between indoor and outdoor designs, to ensure they are considering the right technology for their project that has been designed specifically for the intended installation area. For example, unlike televisions designed for inside use, outdoor specific models are designed to operate in temperatures between 0°C and 40°C, and withstand up to 90% humidity. ProofVision models are also IP55 rated, which certifies that the televisions are protected against dust ingress, and low-pressure water jets from any direction, making them ideal for withstanding British weather. What’s more, due to the fact

that when outdoors, users might not always be sat directly in front of the television, certain outdoor TV models have a 178 x 178 viewing angle that ensures a clear picture for all viewers from various angles or at larger gatherings and in commercial settings.

INSTALLATION ADVICE

While outdoor AV installation projects offer exciting opportunities, they also come with their own unique challenges that must be carefully addressed to ensure client satisfaction. An IP rated mains power source is often required to prevent moisture damage and ProofVision recommends using a wired internet connection or a Wi-Fi extender to achieve the best streaming quality too. HDMI cables should be kept under 30 metres to maintain a strong signal to the outdoor TV, while the use of extension cords, and adapters, should be avoided if they are not designed for outdoor environments. Furthermore, where possible, utilise weatherproof junction boxes for power outlets, and implement drip loops in cables to prevent water from entering the ports. AV installers should also check that any additional cabling used is weather-resistant.

For the stability of the product and to ensure the safety of the end-

user, AV specialists should follow the specific manufacturer’s instructions. For its outdoor TV range, ProofVision recommends choosing a VESA-compatible, weatherproof support when mounting the TV that is sufficiently rated for outdoor use. Installers should make sure the mount can handle the TV’s weight and is placed to allow sufficient ventilation, as without airflow, heat can build up and reduce the product lifespan. ProofVision suggests mounting onto a wall, where possible, and for optimal viewing, choosing an installation area that is typically shaded or semi-shaded.

The growing demand for sophisticated outdoor living spaces presents a significant opportunity for AV installers. Furthermore, commercial settings are increasingly looking to differentiate their offering and meet the needs of modern consumers. Outdoor televisions can create a more engaging atmosphere in a pub garden, hotel courtyard or sports venue. Therefore, by including entertainment options designed specifically for outdoor usage in their portfolios, AV installers can tap into this lucrative market and attract clients who are keen to enhance their spaces with outdoor entertainment technology.

INNOVATIONS INCREASE OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Outdoor entertainment remains an important growth category for integrators, says Snap One.

The rise in outdoor living and garden rooms can be attributed to a powerful combination of factors, including a desire for a connection to nature, a focus on health and wellness, the changing hybrid working landscape and social trends. As a result, homeowners continue to invest in a whole range of features to help them extend hours of use and the enjoyment that an outdoor space can provide. Quick-drying, comfortable outdoor furniture, fire pits, lighting, outdoor office spaces and waterproof pergola roofs and canopies are all now potentially realistic investments.

Looking ahead to Summer 2025, it’s clear that homeowners are keen to create welcoming and functional outdoor spaces where they can relax, entertain with ease and move seamlessly between indoor and outdoor living. In this context, the trend for outdoor entertainment systems that can enable this lifestyle and make these ambitions a reality will continue its upward trajectory.

But, to capitalise on this opportunity, the need for stylish, effective, sustainable and simple music and lighting technology solutions that enhance rather than overpower an outdoor space has never been more acute. The good news is that there is a growing choice of technology options that can make any outdoor space more welcoming, comfortable and entertaining. Launched at ISE 2025, we have significant additions to our Episode outdoor range to maximise the outdoor opportunity for integrators - the Episode Surroundscape Series and Episode Extreme Speakers.

Providing an upgrade on the Episode Landscape range, the Episode Surroundscape Series offers high-performance audio in various weather conditions, with the flexibility to create a concert-like experience outdoors with reliable performance and easy installation. The range includes Satellite Speakers, Burial Subwoofers, a Hardscape Subwoofer, and mounting accessories. Satellite speakers have expanded tap settings, wide sound dispersion and reformulated UV paint to reduce fading while the quick-connect mounting system features an integrated wiring block for fast and simple installation. There’s also improved reliability with a new aluminium design for the satellite speakers and stronger mounting options.

Episode Extreme is our innovative, purposebuilt weatherproof speaker, designed to withstand the extreme conditions for water, wind and temperature. With an integrated rear enclosure that minimises water ingress, this speaker is perfect for outdoor decking areas which may experience high winds, above average rainfall and storms during the year, high salinity coastal or marine environments and saunas. Available in 6in and 8in sizes with replacement grilles in black and white, these speakers include an integrated rear enclosure, sealed directly from the factory to minimise water ingress while speaker grille pins can withstand Cat1 hurricane force wind conditions.

CHOICES

Episode Surroundscape and Extreme Speakers join an extensive product range where innovation is already helping to grow the outdoor entertainment business for integrators. This includes Episode Radiance, our impressive, all-inone bollard-style music and lighting solution which removes many of the pain points associated with outdoor installations. The dual functionality of Episode Radiance is a big time-saver for installers as it only requires one, easy-to-fit two-conductor burial wire to produce high-quality audio and the perfect ambient lighting for entertainment. As customers increasingly want a simple solution with minimal impact on landscaped gardens, Episode Radiance is a key product that ticks multiple boxes.

Installation is further simplified as the full range of bollards within Radiance are designed for 70v amplification. Selectable 70v tap settings allow for detailed tuning and balancing of the sound at each bollard, which means the individual volume can be set while the entire system is adjusted as a whole.

This simplicity doesn’t mean the units lack power, however. The bollard speaker allows for a 360° radiating sound signature compared to the more focused directional sound signature of today’s landscape product offerings. The subwoofer utilises a 10in long-throw woofer mounted in a completely sealed cabinet, and, for a lifetime of dependable entertainment, each model is finished in a UV protected finish and is IP66 certified.

Shifting lifestyles means more opportunity for exterior entertainment

STAYING CONNECTED WITH OUTDOOR APS

Cody Crossland, VP of Sales & Customer Service at distributor Blackwire Designs, examines the challenges of exterior connectivity.

There’s no denying that staying connected to the digital world is an essential part of daily life, even when spending time in the great outdoors. Whether it’s streaming music, making video calls, gaming, or working by the pool, having reliable, high-performance Wi-Fi is a necessity. Additionally, a strong outdoor network is crucial for supporting devices like wireless doorbells, security cameras and pool controllers.

Not too long ago, installers would try to meet outdoor Wi-Fi needs by placing regular indoor access points (APs) on patios. The problem? Those devices weren’t designed to handle extreme weather or temperature changes, which led to a multitude of headaches — dropped connections, unhappy users and costly service calls. Thankfully, things have come a long way. Today, specialised outdoor APs are a must-have for delivering reliable, seamless Wi-Fi in outdoor spaces. Paired with other modern solutions, they’ve become the go-to for keeping residential outdoor areas connected and frustration-free.

To solve the problems with using indoor APs outside, manufacturers have created specialised outdoor APs designed for front

and back yards. These devices are built to handle tough weather conditions, with sturdy enclosures that protect against dust, moisture and extreme temperatures. By using these weather-resistant APs, installers can skip the headaches of indoor APs failing outdoors and instead provide their clients with dependable Wi-Fi and peace of mind.

To further enhance coverage, outdoor APs offer a range of antenna options, enabling installers to customise coverage to suit the unique requirements of each setup. For instance, omnidirectional antennas are ideal for broad coverage, while directional antennas focus signals over longer distances. Carefully selecting and positioning antennas helps installers ensure strong Wi-Fi coverage across the entire property, eliminating dead zones and keeping connectivity at its best.

For larger projects or those needing detailed coverage planning, some installers and distributors offer predictive heat-mapping services. Using advanced software, they analyse the property layout to create a heatmap showing expected Wi-Fi coverage. By considering factors like distance, obstacles and signal interference, installers can strategically place

outdoor APs to ensure consistent coverage. This proactive approach helps reduce service calls and connectivity issues.

Beyond residential use, outdoor Wi-Fi networks deliver significant benefits for commercial environments. Businesses can offer customers and employees reliable, high-speed Wi-Fi in outdoor spaces, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for their devices. This is particularly valuable during large events, where reliable connections enhance the attendee experience and support various interactive applications and services.

Building a strong and reliable Wi-Fi connection is now essential for outdoor spaces. With outdoor access points designed to handle tough weather, optimised antennas for customised coverage and predictive heatmapping for precise planning, installers can provide dependable signals for a variety of outdoor applications. Whether for residential use, commercial spaces, or large events, a well-designed outdoor Wi-Fi network eliminates connectivity problems, enhances the user experience, and ensures seamless access to the digital world — even in the great outdoors.

ACHIEVING SEAMLESS OUTDOOR INSTALLATIONS

For installers looking to grow their outdoor installation business and deliver flawless outdoor audio-visual experiences, careful planning and ongoing support are essential to ensure client satisfaction and long-lasting results:

1. Evaluate the Environment

Assess site-specific challenges such as intense sunlight, salty air or unpredictable weather. This will help you to select the most suitable weather-resistant equipment with appropriate IP ratings and durable finishes.

2. Plan for Integration

Work with clients to discreetly integrate speakers, displays, and wiring while preserving the aesthetics of the outdoor space. Early collaboration with landscapers or contractors can help to ensure optimum product positioning and embedded wiring and components, for a polished, unobtrusive look.

3. Focus on Scalability and Infrastructure

Installing a robust infrastructure from the outset makes future upgrades far simpler and avoids the need for disruptive rework. Running additional cables or conduits during the initial installation, even if not immediately required, can save both time and expense later. This avoids the need for disruptive modifications later—after all, you don’t want to disturb a beautifully landscaped garden or patio twice!

4. Offer a Maintenance Contract

Outdoor systems require regular upkeep to maintain optimal performance. Offering an annual maintenance contract for tasks like cleaning speakers, inspecting wiring, and updating software ensures systems stay in peak condition. This proactive approach not only keeps clients happy but also provides installers with recurring revenue opportunities.

THE FUTURE OF HOME ENTERTAINMENT

As homes continue to serve as entertainment hubs inside and out, outdoor AV is becoming a must-have feature for clients. Installers who position themselves as experts in this field can help clients realise the full potential of their homes, beyond the backdoor, while securing new clients and lucrative revenue streams.

TAKING INDOORS, OUTDOORS

Michael Johnson, Commercial Head, UK & Global Marketing Director at Monitor Audio looks at the issues surrounding maintaining audio quality for exterior applications.

Let’s face it, replaying music outdoors is really quite difficult. Not only do you require a loudspeaker that will withstand the elements and continue to work flawlessly, it also needs to be of relatively discrete stature and retain its appearance, regardless of what the elements throw at it. Most importantly, it has to perform in the open air and deliver a wide frequency response across all volume levels. Simple, eh?

Herein lies one of the most complex design conundrums for the loudspeaker designer.

Every detail has to be painstakingly researched to make sure that it reaches the required specification for the job. In addition, it needs to offer the high level of construction and ease of installation that CI integrators as well as customers require/expect.

At Monitor Audio, we have been creating outdoor speakers for a number of years, starting with the original Climate speaker in 2008 and moving on to the more recent next gen Climate range in 2015. However, we have always felt

that we could create a speaker that combines the ruggedness of an outdoor speaker with the performance quality and industrial design more suited to indoor usage. Or the Holy Grail of speaker design, as it were…

As with any new design, we utilise our Transparent Design Philosophy and our first priority is the drivers and crossover, as these are the essential elements for any speaker. For any speaker to withstand the rigours of surviving outdoor conditions, these elements have to be rugged and perform across a wide-range of temperatures and environments. Having widely utilised our C-CAM metal domed tweeter through our custom installation ranges, we knew it was rigid enough to withstand a wide-range of applications. For outdoor usage, we created a special finish that further protects the delicate dome from the elements, without losing any of the performance dynamics and precision. This was twinned with an RST II (Rigid Surface Technology) metal coned mid/bass driver, which offers the perfect pistonic motion for total realism and clarity. When connected via the dedicated crossover, we knew we had the successful performance combination we were looking for.

Crucially, the industrial design needed to be fit for purpose, yet offer the user a delicate product that would blend into any environment. To achieve its IP66 weather-resistant rating, we couldn’t use a port, which traditionally enables a small speaker to sound bigger. Also, for outdoor use, there is no acoustic boundary, such as a room for the speaker to interact with and, therefore, control bass response, so we had to be more creative. This led to research into ABR (Auxiliary Bass Radiator) drivers, which work in unison with the powered driver to offer improved low-end performance in a sealed enclosure. The resulting design is a one-piece cabinet made from dense ABS and reinforced glass fibre, the rear panel of which is an entire ABR, tuned perfectly to work with the mid/bass driver to work just like a sealed port tube. As well as preventing ingress from the elements, the ABR allows the bass to reach

lower frequencies and deliver a satisfyingly full low-end performance, in the same way as would be enjoyed from a traditional ported design, whilst the cabinet material offers a long-lasting finish that can be easily cleaned.

MARKET FEEDBACK

We always consult with our CI integrators to understand what they require when it comes to installation requirements, and first and foremost they request easy installation. Taking our proprietary flush-mount Quik-Link technology to a new level, we developed a die-cast aluminium bracket that is installed along with the cable terminations prior to the speaker fixing. When installing the speaker, a single bolt holds both the speaker to the bracket as well as making the electrical termination, making it simple to install in any environment. The speaker can be positioned horizontally or vertically and can be rotated by

up to 180 degrees, allowing the speaker to be aimed at the required position.

Designing a speaker to be used outside isn’t quite as easy as it might seem, even for a loudspeaker maker of 50 years experience. The resulting product range is the Monitor Audio Climate 3G, of which there are two models – the Climate Medium CL2M and Climate Small CL2S, with the mid/bass driver and cabinet size being the difference between the two. Deployment in any environment is simple, and performance is exactly as we want, whilst the timeless design blends with any architectural feature.

To say that we are proud of these speakers in an understatement. Packed full of dedicated engineering utilised to solve multiple issues, we feel we have finally created the perfect utility speaker – one that performs as well outside as it does inside.

HIGHLIGHTING THE HOSPITALITY INFO SUPERHIGHWAY

Stuart Lockhart, Managing Director of support product specialist Vision Audio Visual, examines how information systems are helping hospitality venues hit the right tone.

The hospitality sector has always been a playground for innovation, with digital signage playing a central role in transforming customer experiences. With global digital signage revenue expected to reach $31.71 billion by 2028, the opportunities for integrators and installers to create impactful, tech-driven experiences are immense. Hospitality businesses are under pressure to deliver exceptional, tech-driven experiences that stand out.

WHAT’S HOT IN HOSPITALITY?

Competitive socialising is redefining the customer experience in hospitality. Trends like live social walls, interactive content and community-driven activities are becoming essential in creating memorable experiences. Imagine turning digital screens into dynamic hubs of interaction—displaying real-time Instagram feeds shared by diners, enabling live voting for event playlists, or showcasing user-generated content that fosters connection and excitement.

For integrators, this represents a golden opportunity to transform venues into digital playgrounds. By incorporating creative applications into existing digital signage networks, businesses can drive guest engagement and boost brand loyalty effortlessly.

STRATEGIC PLACEMENT

The effectiveness of digital signage depends not only on compelling content but also on strategic placement. Flexible mounting solutions are essential for optimising both space and visibility, allowing businesses to create impactful displays without compromising valuable retail or lounge areas. Properly positioned digital signage ensures maximum engagement by delivering messages directly where customers are most likely to see them.

Vision’s Tilting Mounts (VFM-W4X4T, VFM-W6X4T) are ideal for flat panel displays, enabling businesses to position screens for wayfinding, promotional content, or branded messaging. These mounts maximise floor space and offer visibility from multiple angles, ensuring that guests can easily interact with and absorb the content.

For innovative use of overhead spaces, Flat-Panel Ceiling Mounts (VFM-C6X4/V2) provide a unique solution. Hotels, for example, to highlight sustainability initiatives, such as renewable energy efforts or recycling programs, creating deeper connections with eco-conscious travellers. Ceiling-mounted displays offer a fresh and engaging way to communicate important messages without taking up valuable floor space.

When it comes to large-scale installations, Vision’s Video Wall Mount (VFM-VW6X4) is the perfect choice for seamless and perfectly aligned setups. These video walls deliver immersive displays, making them ideal for hosting karaoke nights, trivia games, or themed parties. By incorporating vibrant digital backdrops, venues can captivate audiences and elevate their events to extraordinary experiences.

INVESTING IN KIOSKS FOR FLEXIBILITY

The integration of kiosk technology is a rapid way to deploy and flexibly manage digital signage for hospitality venues without wall mounting and with the ability to utilise displays to suit each event type. Cutting-edge solutions like the 55in 4K Digital Signage Kiosk (DSD55) can be redeployed for directional signage, to provide branded content or to upsell in

various places throughout a hotel, pub or club. These kinds of displays are increasingly popular as the casing also ensures they are enduring in high footfall environments.

This thinking can also be applied to displays in meeting and presentation environments, putting them on wheels rather than wall mounting so they can be swapped between rooms as required. This lowers the initial cost output for the client and gives time to create proof of concept for investments in your customer’s digital signage estate.

TO TOUCH SCREEN OR NOT TO TOUCHSCREEN?

When deciding whether to integrate touchscreens into a hospitality estate, height and accessibility should be at the forefront of your considerations. Touchscreens can enhance guest experiences by offering intuitive and efficient interactions, but only if they are accessible to all users. Ensuring the screens are installed at an appropriate height and designed for ease of use, including for individuals with mobility challenges, is crucial. By prioritising inclusivity and ergonomic design, integrators can determine if touchscreens are the right choice for each establishment, ultimately creating a more welcoming and functional space for guests.

MAXIMISING

HOSPITALITY AV PERFORMANCE WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK

Jonny McKee, VP Product Management at Amino, specialist in video and digital signage, offers some insight for success.

The hospitality AV sector is a fascinating ecosystem – its budgets may not rival stadiums or corporate flagship stores, but its requirements for high-performing, adaptable systems are just as demanding. Bars, restaurants, gyms and entertainment venues must deliver flexible, reliable solutions to an increasingly tech-savvy clientele. From managing live TV and digital signage to ensuring seamless performance across multiple sites, hospitality businesses need cost-efficient, scalable systems that deliver without fuss.

These environments don’t have the luxury of failure. AV systems must be as easy to deploy as they are to maintain, all while meeting high standards for uptime, security and adaptability. The key? Purpose-built solutions that anticipate the unique needs of hospitality environments – solutions that don’t just get the job done but create new opportunities to engage customers and optimise operations.

THE REALITIES OF HOSPITALITY AV DEPLOYMENT

Deploying AV in hospitality spaces is anything but straightforward. Bars need video walls for live sports and dynamic ads. Restaurants require screens that adapt seamlessly from breakfast menus to live promotions during the rest of the day. Hotels increasingly use touchscreens and video walls for guest information and wayfinding, ensuring the experience is as intuitive as it is engaging.

This complexity demands systems that juggle physical installation, networking, content creation and security while keeping budgets in check. Too often we see solutions relying on general-purpose devices that fail to deliver long-

term value. Focusing instead on purpose-built devices is key to addressing four fundamental requirements: adaptability, simplicity, security, and scalability. These pillars ensure that hospitality AV deployments don’t just meet today’s expectations — they exceed them.

ADAPTABILITY IS THE CORE ADVANTAGE

If content is king, then adaptability is the crown jewel of any AV system. Content quality and flexibility drive the customer experience, so creative teams need to be able to push boundaries without being limited by the platform.

Digital signage remains a cornerstone of hospitality AV, but our customers often discover new use cases after deployment. For instance, one restaurant chain using our managed media players for customer-facing digital signage realised the same system could deliver encrypted live TV alongside digital content –without additional hardware or engineering. Thanks to the factory-provisioned security keys in our devices, this transition was seamless. This kind of adaptability isn’t a one-off. Bars, gyms, and similar venues often begin with basic AV requirements, only to later unlock the potential of content management platforms for signage, streaming, or interactive applications. The critical point is that hardware should support all common use cases from the outset.

By investing heavily in software capabilities, a new wave of devices can support graphically intensive applications, live TV, streaming services, and content management platforms – all from one platform. The result? Futureproof systems that allow hospitality businesses to adapt to new demands without overhauling their AV infrastructure.

FASTER, SIMPLER, BETTER DEPLOYMENT

Cost efficiency is always a top priority in hospitality AV, but it’s not just about the price of the media player. Deployment costs – including engineering time and on-site visits – are a significant factor.

Zero-touch deployment models allow devices to be installed in minutes: mount the unit, provide power and networking (ideally via a single powerover-Ethernet cable), and connect HDMI to the screen. Job done: no complicated configuration, no specialist staff and once installed, the media player’s software, applications and settings can all be remotely configured.

REMOTE DEVICE MANAGEMENT IS A SECRET WEAPON

Remote device management is the unsung hero of hospitality AV. It’s not just about rebooting devices from afar – it’s about transforming how systems are deployed and maintained. Every device is configured centrally, automating tasks like operating system upgrades, application deployment and configuration setup. This slashes on-site technician time and eliminates human error during installation.

Once deployed, managing AV systems across multiple locations then becomes effortless. With real-time diagnostics, remote troubleshooting and rule-based content management, engineers no longer need to visit sites to resolve issues. Emerging capabilities like live on-screen previews also allow administrators to see exactly what’s being displayed on any media player and take control if necessary. Not only does this reduce operational costs and downtime, but it also aligns with sustainability goals. By minimising travel for on-site maintenance, businesses can significantly reduce their carbon footprint while managing budgets.

THE FUTURE

Customer expectations are rising, and hospitality AV systems must keep pace. The future lies in platforms that seamlessly integrate live content, interactive signage, and data-driven management tools – all while championing a more proactive approach to security that elevates standards and moves security from afterthought, to core feature. I’m passionate about leading this charge and seeing hospitality customers and the wider industry win with better connectivity, sustainable hardware re-usage practices, or intuitive features like presence sensing – enabling businesses to track customer movement and optimise venue layouts and content placement.

The future of hospitality AV is one of adaptability, efficiency and responsibility. Businesses that invest in advanced, futureready technologies today will not only deliver exceptional customer experiences but also position themselves as leaders in cost management and environmental sustainability. Today, the industry has the tools to rise to the challenge – all without breaking the bank.

HOSPITALITY HEAVEN

Michael Short, Senior Director of Marketing Operations and Residential, Crestron, takes a seat at the hospitality table.

From a global pandemic to inflationary pressures, the bar and restaurant industry has faced five solid years of challenging times. Many of the pubs and eateries that survived realised that a prime differentiator was their ability to create the perfect atmosphere. Think of beverage-forward bars that centre their entertainment around sports or intimate dining experiences that provide the perfect ambiance with music and lighting.

Proper control, lighting and shading, and content delivery systems are vital to achieving the right results. The best systems can set the scene with a single touch – or no touch at all. When staff needn’t concern themselves with technology, they can focus all their attention on providing outstanding service to their guests.

DISTRIBUTING CONTENT

The rise of AV-over-IP solutions (which, of course, includes Audio-over-IP) makes it easy to curate and send streaming video and music to any display or speaker on a network with a single cable. Its near-zero latency and scalability make AV-over-IP technology a solution that’s commanding the marketplace. When you add the available power and flexibility of edge devices, you’ve got the audio equivalent of a Swiss Army knife.

For our part, Crestron rolled out a suite of audio edge devices with connectivity for everything from turntables to Bluetooth to XLR

jacks for pro audio applications (DJs, karaoke applications, mixing board and so on). We’ve also rolled out an eARC bridge device that allows the user to distribute television audio to anywhere in a space via the network. With a blend of all these solutions, any zone in a pub or restaurant could have audio and video tailored to the space’s specific needs at any given time of day – sports by the bar, light classical music in the dining area and so on.

CONTROL AND AUTOMATION

In the most recent issue of our Crestron magazine – Smarter Spaces – we spoke with Zak Gulling, CIO of the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno, Nevada. Zak told us how their intuitive control system took their hotel spa to the next level.

Zak says, “Our spa, Spa Atlantis, is Forbes Four-Star rated – one of just a few in the world with that designation.” The systems in the spa can be set to provide the perfect environment for a massage or treatment with a single tap. Zak explains, “The therapist just hits a start button and the room knows what type of massage and how long it should last, so the lighting, audio and climate automatically adjust.” Video displays will present cozy firelight scenes in winter or Hawaiian beaches for a Lomilomi massage.

“Our watchword is consistency. Our audio’s consistent, our lighting’s consistent, the video’s

consistent, so it’s repeatable every single time, and we run all that through Crestron. That extends to the Forbes Four-Star-rated Atlantis Steakhouse. A staffer simply hits the ‘open’ button, and the restaurant is set: lighting, video, audio – everything,” explains Zak.

THE ULTIMATE EXPRESSION

The integration of all of these technologies into the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa is the realisation of a true, end-to-end hospitality technology installation. One of the biggest of these types of ‘total technological ecosystems’ can be found on the Las Vegas strip at a new resort called Circa. In addition to its lobbies, bars, luxury guest suites and restaurants – all outfitted with zone-specific control and content options, there’s an outdoor pool amphitheater dubbed Stadium Swim, which features six pools, private cabanas, and a 143-foot HD LED screen. Circa is also home to the world’s largest sportsbook, which features a 78-million-pixel screen spanning 145 feet and room enough for 1,000 guests on three viewing levels.

While Circa is a unique case – at an incredible scale – the lessons that one can take here by utilising everything from the Crestron Home OS to Crestron custom solutions is that any hospitality venue can set itself apart with the right mix or content, control and automated systems.

WOW IS WHERE IT’S AT

Scott Normand, Pro AV Sr. Director at ADI Global Distribution takes a seat at the bar.

There is a growing expectation from customers and end-users in the clubs, bars and restaurants sector of the hospitality industry to experience a ‘wow’ factor from the venues they visit. In an increasingly competitive industry, these high expectations leave integrators well-positioned to capitalise on the latest technology solutions and add value to their installations by designing and implementing premium audio and video solutions. Outdoor video solutions are gaining tremendous popularity and are driving the entertainment factor for these applications. Rugged displays from SunbriteTV are innovating to support integrator-friendly features, such as built-in storage, as well as, smart apps built into the displays to support these customer’s needs.

With these premium solutions, however, comes the challenge of making these complex systems simple to operate and customise for staff and managers who work in the various clubs, bars and restaurants. In order to see success, it is crucial that integrators have a deep understanding of each of the products available to them on the market, and develop a strong expertise in configuring them to meet the customer’s needs in a seamless way. Developing, fine-tuning and exercising these skills and expertise can take place through resources and training courses offered by industry manufacturers, such as Snap One

and ADI, who provide sales engineering and design engineering resources to ensure proper system designs, deployment and functionality of these systems.

In addition to a deep knowledge of the products available, truly well-rounded expertise requires integrators to always have a pulse on industry trends and to know where the industry is heading. As with every industry, the dynamics of the hospitality space are fluid and constantly shifting based on modern lifestyles and trends, but the core systems always remain intact. While some deployments are more video-focused and others may be more audio or networking-focused, the main systems and the integration of these remain paramount in customer satisfaction.

One emerging market segment over the last decade has been the MDU space, which has a slightly unique set of needs from a management perspective. Familiarity within the MDU space can provide integrators with a competitive edge and a greater ability to exceed customer expectations. Snap One offers a number of solutions to facilitate these unique spaces. Access Networks offers enterprise-grade networking designs and ongoing support, as well as a revenue extraction model where the MDU managers can provide and charge for the broadband internet connection. Snap One also offers a range of audio, video and innovative

storage infrastructure to support these systems where equipment storage for every room presents a challenge for the integrators.

Recognising and acting on emerging opportunities for growth is of the utmost importance within the custom integration industry. Integrators in the hospitality sector can find these opportunities for growth in providing control, user interface and backend support, as these trends continue to solidify themselves as key pillars to a successful deployment. A beautiful, user-friendly UI is critical to the system’s functionality and user satisfaction, while a great ongoing support model is key to the long-term success of the system. We’ve seen many examples of these in the market, as well as Control4’s development in these areas, such as the successful rollout of Connect & Assist and the complete ecosystem to support the distributed audio and video systems. With Control4’s Connect and Assist, the end user can make changes to their systems without the integrator’s involvement, and they can also get support for their systems when needed, solving many of the pain points of traditional control systems. This, coupled with Snap One’s cloud management platform, OvrC, means that integrators are fully empowered to support their customers and ensure maximum uptime and satisfaction levels.

OFFICES THAT ADAPT: THREE PREDICTIONS FOR THE WORKPLACE IN 2025

Simon Watson, Global Head of Innovation at AV installation experts Kinly, takes a look at the future of work spaces.

As head of innovation at Kinly, I’ve spent the past year keeping an eye on the progression of workplace technology and its impact on how we work. If 2024 was a transitional year, where hybrid working cemented itself in modern working culture, 2025 will be the year we move from adapting to innovating.

Many businesses are still grappling with a critical question: how can we make the office a space where employees want to spend any time? For some, the answer has been to mandate a return to the office. But this approach

misses a deeper challenge — the office needs to evolve to meet the expectations of a modern, hybrid workforce.

A key part of this will be the development and use of AV technology that is designed around the wants and needs of employees. These systems will need to help make the office environment more efficient, more sustainable, and more personal. With that in mind, here are my predictions for how AV will shape the workplace of the future:

SMART SENSORS WILL DRIVE WORKPLACE EVOLUTION

The employee experience will be a top priority for organisations in 2025, with HR roles increasingly focused on enhancing it. As such, companies need to think about how they can make the office more enjoyable through personalisation — with AV playing a critical role in this shift.

In the next year, personalised office spaces will become the norm, with smart technology at their heart. For instance, office sensors will monitor temperature and air quality, automatically adjusting conditions based on user preferences or occupancy levels. Similarly, workplace applications will gain momentum, guiding employees through their day – from locating available desks or meeting rooms, to finding colleagues, and book parking spaces before arriving at the office and more. This also extends to the evolution of intranet tools that will deliver tailored updates to employees and ensure they stay informed with role-specific content.

But this technology doesn’t stop at the office door. According to Kinly research, twothirds (65%) of enterprises admitted that their office spaces are not fit for hybrid working, and over half (57%) said poor hybrid workflows are

What takes place in office spaces is changing; installers can offer a range of solutions

damaging staff productivity. Tackling this issue needs to be focus in 2025, primarily through smart conference rooms with advanced video conference capabilities, allowing in-office teams to seamlessly work with remote and international employees.

We’ll also see rapid adoption of extended reality (XR) technologies, which will transform how teams collaborate. XR will go beyond experimentation, driving real value through immersive 3D virtual meetings, virtual site tours, and more engaging all-hands meetings, events and training sessions. These tools will foster creativity, innovation and teamwork, delivering measurable benefits across all industries.

REAL-TIME DATA WILL POWER SMARTER DECISIONS

Almost every office environment can enjoy the benefits of smart technologies, and specific use cases can be implemented depending on the business’s needs. But to understand how to integrate these technologies, and to fully take advantage of them once installed, organisations need one crucial thing — data.

Real-time data will become the central resource for decision-making, helping organisations optimise office layouts, energy use and resource allocation. Moreover, this data will power AI-driven systems that control and enhance smart office functions. In 2025 we will see growing adoption of other AV technologies such as IoT sensors as a key enabler – providing occupancy, environmental and usage insights to ensure organisations have the information they need to make smarter decisions.

This result is a powerful feedback loop: sensors collect real-time data, which feeds into AI models to improve the office environment. In turn, the improved systems generate new data points, continuously refining and enhancing the workspace. This cyclical approach will not only make offices smarter, but also increasingly efficient and responsive to employees’ needs. However, organisations need to be strategic in how they introduce these technologies. Starting small with outcome-focused projects that clearly demonstrate value, such as pilot programs or targeted applications of AI and XR – such as automating energy use or creating immersive training environments – ensures that everyone is comfortable and confident in the new technology.

As with any disruptive technology, addressing employee concerns will be crucial. Companies that provide education, support and clear communication around the benefits of smart office technologies will set themselves apart in 2025. By prioritising transparency and showcasing early wins, organisations can build trust and confidence while driving adoption.

AI WILL LEAD ADAPTION

Smart office technology presents businesses with a solution for how to maximise the potential of their spaces in the coming year. For those eager to bring employees back into the office, personalised experiences and streamlined workflows make it a significantly more attractive option. And for those who are looking to augment their hybrid workflows, smart technology facilitates seamless collaboration for both in-person and remote teams.

These advancements are being driven by rapid progress in AI and data capabilities. In the year ahead, as these technologies continue to evolve, smart offices will only become more intelligent, adaptive and responsive to employee behaviours and preferences. This shift will push organisations to strike a careful balance between innovation and adaptability to ensure that their office spaces continue to work for employees.

So, in 2025, companies that embrace these trends will unlock smarter, more efficient workplaces that prioritise both technological and human needs.

CONRAN’S QUEST!

EI spoke with Conran Mas, founder and owner of renowned Hi-Fi brand AVID, as the company is celebrating 30 years of manufacturing in 2025!

How did you become interested in AV/Hi-Fi in the first place?

From a young age I was listening to music and I would often listen secretly when I was supposed to be asleep. However, the real spark came when a friend introduced me to a record player he had built himself. That moment ignited my curiosity and set me on an obsessive path to explore ways to refine and enhance audio performance.

Tell us about how the company was set up and what the first few years were like.

I never originally intended to start my own company, with the initial idea simply to design something for myself. However, personal circumstances and the exceptional quality of my design led to the founding of AVID in 1995 (we’re celebrating 30 years of British manufacturing this year), launching the Acutus turntable.

The early years were challenging, particularly in the conservative home market, compounded by limited resources. Despite these hurdles, we

focused on export markets, and over time, the company gained recognition for its innovative engineering and uncompromising sound quality.

If people are unaware of the company, could you sum up what AVID delivers and what is special or different about it?

AVID offers a complete range of high-fidelity analogue audio systems, from entry-level to esoteric, delivering precision engineering, exceptional performance, reliability and easy installation.

What truly sets us apart is our unique design features that enhance sound quality and the fact we design and manufacture almost everything in-house here in Britain, ensuring unparalleled quality control and continuous innovation.

Your company is known for creating its own manufacturing solutions, tell us about this and what it brings to the brand.

Our design philosophy is rooted in the pursuit of perfection, ensuring our products

embody timeless quality rather than builtin obsolescence. By creating our own manufacturing tools, we achieve flawless repeatability in production. This guarantees that every product is crafted precisely to its original blueprint, offering each customer unparalleled quality and consistency.

What is a typical day like for you at work?

No two days are the same: I might be designing new products, meeting with distributors or press, addressing production challenges, or simply ensuring factory maintenance. It’s a mix of creativity, problem-solving and management.

What are the founding principles of creating a good turntable product?

A great turntable must eliminate unwanted vibrations, maintain precise speed stability, and allow the cartridge to accurately track the record groove. It’s about engineering precision, material quality and understanding how every component affects the final sound.

Has the so-called vinyl revival helped the company at all, and if so, how?

The resurgence of vinyl has introduced a new, younger generation to the joys of analogue sound. However, as our products are typically considered investments, we’ve experienced the most growth among mature audiophiles, those returning to vinyl and transitioning away from other formats. However, we do have a complete entry-level turntable for £1,500 called the Ingenium Plug&Play which has everything a newcomer needs, including arm and cartridge.

Do people have different expectations or demands from Hi-Fi products than they did when the company first started?

Yes, expectations are constantly evolving. Today, people demand not only exceptional sound quality but also products that make a design statement and blend into their living space, and increasingly, an emphasis on ease of use. Despite changing trends, the majority of our customers still prioritise an engaging musical experience above all else.

Tell us about the Acutus; what are the most important aspects and characteristics of the product?

The Acutus represents the pinnacle of our design and engineering. Its unique features include a resonance-transfer clamp, an exceptionally effective suspension system and perfect speed accuracy. Every detail is designed to reduce the noise floor and allow the cartridge to extract the finest nuances from a record and provide realistic musicality.

Are there any other products or innovations you are particularly proud of?

The aforementioned Ingenium Plug&Play turntable stands out for offering world-class performance at an accessible price and incorporates technology trickled down from the Acutus. Our loudspeakers are also gaining accolades and feature in-house designed technology to eliminate unwanted vibrations.

What is the company working on right now?

We’ve recently introduced a refined bias compensation mechanism in our tonearms to further enhance sound quality. As we enter our 30th anniversary year, we are gearing up for a series of product launches that will outline our development roadmap for the next decade.

How is the AV/Hi-Fi sector doing in general?

Despite challenges like economic pressures and shifting consumer habits, the enduring passion for high-quality audio continues to drive demand. AVID’s success lies in offering lasting, well-reviewed products backed by a heritage of exceptional sound quality.

Do you sell turntables to many home cinema/installer/smart home companies?

We do work with some smart home and installation companies, but there remains significant untapped potential, as many overlook the opportunity to offer high-quality vinyl systems for ‘man caves’ and dedicated listening spaces. As more people integrate audio into their homes, these companies have a unique opportunity to introduce real high-fidelity to new audiences, showcasing the unparalleled experience of exceptional analogue sound.

Will people still be listening to records in 50 years’ time?

Absolutely. Records provide a pure, authentic connection to music that digital formats simply can’t replicate. Analogue playback captivates listeners, encouraging them to experience entire albums rather than skipping tracks. Like any mechanical device, future advancements will enhance musical enjoyment, while the enduring appeal and tangible nature of vinyl ensure its relevance for generations to come.

What are your personal musical tastes? What are you listening to right now?

My musical tastes literally span everything from classical, jazz, rock and electronic. Right now, I’m revisiting some classic albums from Pink Floyd whilst working on a new design utilising our 3D CAD software.

Away from work, do you have any other special interests or hobbies?

I enjoy motorsport track days and engineeringrelated hobbies as they resonate with my interest in precision and performance. I also love spending time outdoors cycling and relentlessly working through climbing the Wainwright’s in the Lake District.

TOM TELLS IT LIKE IT IS

Tom Helm, Director at install company Ribble AV, takes on our tough-mudder of a quiz.

Tell us a little about your company; What do you specialise in? Who is involved?

Our company is called Ribble AV. We are a small AV and integration company based in the Northwest of England. We predominantly work in the high-end residential sector, but recently have been taking on more and more commercial work which we have been loving so far. We specialise in KNX, Lutron and Control4 systems, which work great for us!

What are you doing today work-wise?

Today we are working on a KNX lighting panel build in our new HQ, ready for one of our whole home projects on the Fylde coast coming up.

Tell us about the projects you are working on right now?

We currently have quite a few projects with a March / April deadline that we are working towards. These include a new build home in Lytham St Annes, a full home renovation and

extension in Liverpool, a sports bar in Norfolk and a five star hotel in the Swiss Alps!

How do you feel the industry in general is going right now?

For us, last year was quite slow, with a lot of projects being pushed back, but now, everything is looking really good and we are finding that projects are coming in regularly and being agreed quickly, which is great!

The impressive White Horse project has featured in Essential Install

What areas of the smart home and luxury AV sector need to improve and how?

For me, I would love to see more regulation of the industry, much like the electrical industry is. Unfortunately, we still see a lot of work that just is not good enough, which results in poor experiences and it hurts the entire industry. Things such as CEDIA membership should involve site visits to ensure standards of work. I could be wrong, but that’s my two penneth on the matter anyway.

Do you think training needs to be improved. If so, how?

As a small business in the Northwest, I think accessibility to training needs to be improved, as the vast majority of courses are London centric, which vastly increases the commitment in both time and money for us and the majority of all other Northern businesses.

Is there a project you are particularly proud of and why?

We carried out a full AV, control, security and network package for a bar and restaurant last year in Norfolk called the White Horse, the case study of which can be found on our website. It had quite a vast scope of work, and add in the challenge of the distance involved, I couldn’t have been prouder of our small team who delivered the project exceptionally well, and all done in house.

Are there any brands or products you particularly like working with, and why?

We tend to build all of our new build projects on KNX. For the simple reason that it just works. A service phone call for an issue with KNX, 99% of the time is that an electrical breaker has tripped somewhere. The vast amount of manufacturers of equipment for KNX also helps as it allows you to tailor to different budgets and needs, and it also helps if there are any stock issues, as we can simply use another manufacturer if required.

We also love working with the guys over at Artcoustic for a lot of our sound systems. We just love the product as it sounds great, it’s completely scalable, interior designer-friendly and the support we get from them is second to none.

What is the best and the worst thing that has happened to you on site?

The best thing is probably getting to ski in the Swiss Alps whilst working on our Swiss hotel projects. The worst is probably getting stuck at customs for 11 hours on our way out to the same Swiss hotel project!

What is the most unusual client request you have had?

I’m not actually sure if I can share it here…

How do you see the sector changing in the future?

I think our scope will start to get smaller and systems will become more and more decentralised. We are already seeing a rapid decline in video distribution with most preferring local streaming on the in-built apps on TVs. We also seem to be doing more locally-based systems to the rooms; one of our latest was a full 5.2 surround system, network and control all hidden behind a 77in TV, as opposed to being in a rack.

Are there persons/organisations/ companies that have been particularly inspirational in your work life? Why?

I owe a lot to Ian Kinsella at Bang & Olufsen Manchester. He has been such a good person to help me on my way with business, how to plan and ultimately how to sell systems and turn a profit. He has done incredibly well out of the industry, and is someone who I certainly get a lot of inspiration from. He’s also just a super nice guy, which always helps!

Away from work, what are your interests/hobbies?

I played and coached ice hockey in Blackburn for a long time, but I’ll be honest I haven’t played in a number of years now but am trying to get back on the ice again. I try to get outdoors as much as possible, whether that be on the mountain bike or walking. I also try my best to get some skiing in each year. If I’m not doing any of that, I’m at home spending time with my wife Hannah and four-month-old son George.

You have magic powers and get one wish concerning the smart home and luxury AV market; What are you going to wish for?

For all products to just work and stay that way!

What are you watching/listening to right now?

My music taste is pretty eclectic, in a day I can go from Slipknot to 50 Cent, then from Sade to SHY FX.

For TV we have just watched the latest Squid Game on Netflix – that was pretty good! Although I’m finding it harder and harder to find the time for TV with the baby at home.

You can invite three people (living or not) out for a meal/drink. Who’s coming and why?

I would say, my dad for one because he’s not around anymore and I’ve plenty I want to tell him about. Then I would probably say Ozzy Osbourne because I just think he’s hilarious and will have plenty of stories to tell, and then probably someone like Jordan Belfort, again just for the stories!

Tom is partial to Slipnot and Sade all in the same day

INSIDE DBM

Consumer technology journalist Chris Haslam visits DbM to discover

why the company

is the distributor of choice for custom installers.

It’s rare to find my tongue-tied, but after listening to the Meridian Audio DSP9 reference speakers, words don’t seem to do the experience justice. I’m with Barry Sheldrick, Director of Sales for premium AV distributor DbM, who smiles broadly at my reaction. “If your client isn’t getting goosebumps, we’re doing something wrong. Thankfully, we have the very best brands and engineers to do just that.”

Established in 2017, DbM (Distributed by Meridian) specifies and designs the most desirable high-performance AV solutions, from showstopping stereo speakers, whole house integration and the finest in-home cinema. Having a legendary audio brand like Meridian as a calling card for prospective brands and clients is certainly an advantage. “Thanks to our audio engineering background, we start any new conversation with an implicit understanding of the technology involved,” explains Barry. “We understand every link in the chain, and as a result can offer the same level of knowledge and service across all our brands.”

I’m at DbM’s Huntingdon headquarters being treated to a tour, and aside from all the goosebumps, I’m here to get a better

understanding of what a premium AV distributor can offer both for the integrator and end user. It’s clear that the breadth of brands on one roster and implicit understanding of each, is invaluable to integrators. Whether you’re starting from scratch with a developer and need multi-room audio and visual solutions, or just want to reinvigorate an existing setup, it’s clear they have the options to assist.

Ambisonic’s outdoor speakers give the opportunity to even take high-resolution audio into the garden. Listening to a pair of Ambisonic Landscape Ribbon Six speakers (LSR6) with the 360-degree firing architectural Bollard 10, and both the directional precision and surprising level of musicality was impressive. For a moment I forgot I was getting rained on in a Cambridgeshire car park.

“Ambisonic is a perfect fit for DbM,” explains Barry. “They’re versatile, stylish, and we love the reaction clients have when they experience great outdoor audio for the first time.”

DbM’s experience centre allows integrators and clients to experience the latest products from their partner brands. It’s an invaluable resource, and while there’s nothing unusual about product demonstrations, it’s the team’s ability to convey complex information in real-world terms that impresses.

For AV integrators and prospective clients, the two cinema rooms give the opportunity to experience just how good home cinema can be.

A fantastically complex action sequence from Spider-Man: No Way Home, streamed using the Kaleidescape server, rattled my senses in the reference cinema.

The smaller media room is a more versatile space where the distributor can showcase a wide range of AV options including Lumagen’s video processing systems, Trinnov’s processors and amplifiers and Barco’s peerless Hodr projector.

While I was there, I was fortunate enough to listen to Meridian’s latest speaker, the Ellipse. This compact one-box Hi-Fi might seem at odds with premium custom AV solutions, but with technology distilled from the DSP8000 XE and DSP9 loudspeakers, it’s every inch a Meridian. The fact it is also made in the factory

next door - ask for a tour, it’s a fascinating space - makes it all the more remarkable.

From my time at DbM, what’s clear is the team’s implicit understanding of what the integrator and client wants. They’re never happier than when showing just how phenomenal custom installation can be, and don’t shy away from explaining why the best comes at a premium.

UPLANDS LANDS A SMART BUILDING AWARD!

Darren Barker, Design Director, Cinema Luxe, gives an interior designer’s view of ‘Uplands’, an impressive home cinema installation and winner of the Best Home Cinema Project Under £50K at the Smart Building Awards 2024.

Darren explains, “The client approached Indigo Zest late 2023. They had formed a cinema room as part of the house build several years earlier and it was now the time to both fit and kit out the space. Indigo Zest approached Cinema Luxe to collaborate so the project could be offered to the client as a comprehensive delivery of design, technology, interior design and fit-out.”

Darren adds, “The client was engaged from the start and receptive to the ideas and comments from the Indigo Zest & Cinema Luxe team. Artcoustic produced an excellent technical design, which then ring fenced the AV parameters for the room design. In a way this project was textbook in terms of process, with diligence at each stage resulting in a predictable outcome and finish to the project.”

All projects of course have their unique challenges and issues. This space was no different, as Darren explains, “The biggest challenge of the room was the design, to ensure the room did not look ‘added to’, due to the time that had passed from when the shell was formed and the fact that the design was only now being truly considered. There was also existing cabling infrastructure to

consider, which needed moving and adding to accommodate the system requirements.

“Cinema Luxe’s concept was to create a floating wall design so that there was minimal contact between the room fit-out and the existing room structure, ensuring that we could then control the details. This also gave flexibility on speaker positioning and apertures, acoustic treatment installation and cable run freedom for the Indigo Zest team – all whilst being non-destructive to the existing room shell. The finished result is a room which does not feel retrofitted and entirely cohesive.

PROJECT DETAILS

The team explains that the install process was very concise, just five days for both the room and technology installation from start to finish. This was aided by the fact that the room shell was already complete. Due to this, a large proportion of the construction was done offsite at Cinema Luxe’s fabrication workshop, so as to cause minimal disruption to the client. Close collaboration between site teams ensured a cohesive delivery of interior and technology. Some effective teamwork meant any minor technical issues were ironed out. Darren

explains, “The existing projector aperture was made too small for the suggested upgraded model, which was required for the screen size and thrown distance. Indigo Zest leant on Cinema Luxe’s Bespoke Fabrication Department to manufacture a bespoke projector flange, enabling successful installation without being overly disruptive to the existing room.”

Some nifty footwork was needed to accommodate an upgrade in the projector

This fast-paced project needed to deliver on many different levels and the ability to build off-site was particularly attractive for the client in terms of cutting down on the disruption, but in terms of any favourites aspects for the team, Max Carnegie-Riviere, Senior Designer, Cinema Luxe, says “What I valued most throughout the design process and even after completion, was achieving a balance between aesthetics and functionality. Although we were brought into the project later than usual - a situation that can sometimes challenge the outcome, here it felt as though we had been involved from the very beginning. The selected materials and colour palettes not only complement the existing structure, but the fit-out also ensures the system performs exceptionally well. This is

the goal we aim for in every brief and it stands as a testament to the efforts of both our design team and our integration partner.”

Summing up, final word goes to Darren, “The entire team did an outstanding job on this project. The fact that the room seamlessly blends into the space is a testament to the strong collaboration between our partners— Indigo Zest, Artcoustic and the expertise of our senior designer, Max Carnegie-Riviere, who delivered a design scheme perfectly suited to this award-winning project. Moreover, the swift installation and snag-free delivery further demonstrate how each partner enhances the others’ capabilities, resulting in exceptional outcomes for our clients.”

ORIGIN ACOUSTICS LAUNCHES AMBISONIC SYSTEMS BRAND

Origin Acoustics has announced the launch of a new high-performance audio brand called Ambisonic Systems aimed at the European market.

Ambisonic Systems by Origin Acoustics represents the pinnacle of high-output, audiophile-quality sound reinforcement loudspeakers and is now available in Europe, says the maker. This milestone is made possible in collaboration with Genesis HTA, European distributor of premium CI brands.

With ready-to-listen, semi-custom and fully custom loudspeakers for residential and professional installations, Ambisonic Systems has been created to offer a diverse and versatile portfolio of sound solutions that blend harmoniously to create listening experiences of extraordinary quality and scale. Each product features the brands’ proprietary Planar Magnetic Ribbon driver technology, delivering high-output yet silky-smooth sound that is evenly controlled throughout the listening area, say the maker. A unique waveguide design allows for wide dispersion with excellent stereo imaging, while efficient, high-impact subwoofers contribute to full-range sound reproduction.

Together, Origin Acoustics and Genesis HTA will introduce Ambisonic’s latest outdoor luxury

landscape speaker collection at ISE 2025. Each speaker will feature Ambisonic Systems’ proprietary acoustic technology and a new hexagonal modern design to compliment any residential or commercial outdoor space.

The Ambisonic Systems Landscape Speaker Collection is comprised of Bollard and satellite speakers in three sizes, a surface mount speaker and subwoofer.

The Bollard landscape speakers come in three sizes—ALSB106 10in subwoofer with 6.5in driver, ALSB85 8in subwoofer with 5.5in driver, and the ALSB64 6.5in subwoofer with a 4.5in driver. The Satellite landscape speakers

arrive in three sizes—3 ½in driver, 5 ¼in driver and 6in driver whilst the Surface Mount landscape speaker delivers a 6 ½in driver. The Landscape Subwoofer boasts an 8in woofer.

Ambisonic Systems speaker sleeves are crafted using premium aluminium for its superior acoustic properties, ability to withstand harsh outdoor elements while maintaining the aluminium’s natural beauty, and sustainability benefits for the environment.

DYNAUDIO DEMOS SYMPHONY OPUS ONE

Dynaudio showcased its updated Symphony Opus One immersive soundbar design concept at CES.

After a debut at CEDIA Expo 2024, the company further developed the concept and demoed the latest version, which now includes electronics inside the soundbar itself, in Las Vegas.

Symphony Opus One is a preview of Dynaudio’s vision for the future of all-in-one home audio, explains the maker. The high-design solution has a 73in wingspan, so it integrates

with large screen TVs and houses cutting-edge Dynaudio sound technology for music, movies and gaming. Symphony Opus One has 72 motorised wooden fins that move independently to display the current listening mode and serve as a striking and unique design element.

Behind these fins are 24 drive units—six soft-dome tweeters, 14 mid/bass drivers and four innovative dual-diaphragm force-cancelling subwoofers. The drivers are powered by a meaty 1500W of digital amplification and processed by proprietary Dynaudio spatial-

audio processing algorithms. This custom DSP expands the soundstage and creates a wraparound spatial effect that envelopes every member of the audience in immersive sound, says the manufacturer.

The big difference between the new updated version of the Symphony Opus One concept and the previous iteration is that all of the amplification and processing is now included inside the soundbar. This design enhancement has been made to deliver a more straightforward installation process, as it eliminates the need to buy, house and connect external components, thereby reducing the complexity of dealing with additional wiring.

Listeners can enjoy Symphony Opus One with everything from regular stereo music to fully immersive movie and gaming experiences. And they’ll get a premium Dynaudio experience with whatever content they’re enjoying thanks to four separate sound modes.

Its aluminium-alloy frame is covered with a tactile, Nordic-inspired fabric to blend in with modern homes and listening rooms, and its individually motorised white-oak wood fins are designed for a sleek, modern look and feel.

LUTRON INTRODUCES RADIORA 3

Lutron Electronics has announced the launch of the wireless RadioRA 3 lighting control system. With a portfolio of controls, intelligent lighting and automated window treatments that communicate wirelessly, RadioRA 3 has been created to deliver exquisite, intuitive home control to a growing market segment, says the maker.

With price points designed to sit in-between the HomeWorks and RadioRA2 systems, Lutron says RadioRA 3 will empower smart home professionals to deliver personalised, scalable solutions that transform and simplify how clients experience their homes.

The integrated control system arrives alongside the Vierti keypad, described as a timelessly modern control featuring a hybrid load control option, and Lumaris RGB + tunable white tape light, Lutron’s first internationally available intelligent light source.

“RadioRA 3 makes this suite of state-ofthe-art products easily accessible for AV and home integration professionals looking for opportunities to bring an elevated level of craft and design to their projects,” says Javier Segovia, Vice President of Sales and Services for the UK and Europe.

By unifying intelligent lighting, lighting controls and window treatments into a single system, RA3 makes advanced control accessible, says the company. Lutron’s Clear Connect RF wireless technology streamlines installation—whether for new builds or retrofit projects. No new cables to pull means no construction is necessary, allowing homeowners and integrators to start small and expand and avoid many of the objections of disruption that can hamper the sale of integrated systems.

Connect the system to the rest of the smart home to integrate control of temperature, audio, security and lighting. With Lutron’s LEAP API,

integration with leading smart home brands has never been more responsive, reliable, or secure, says the maker.

Backed by the cloud-powered Lutron Connect system management platform, installers can design, program, install and support custom solutions. And with remote servicing, it’s easy to offer customer support in real-time and without extra trips to the job site or additional fees.

GO WITH THE FLOW FROM ANTIFERENCE

Antiference has announced the introduction of the Clear Flow Cloud (CFC), a cloud-based control system giving the ability to remotely manage networks. The CFC has been designed to work with Clear Flow systems, but is not limited to these system types specifically, explains the company. The Antiference development team has come up with a solution which enables cloud-based control of many other network devices if required.

These types of devices could be (but probably not limited to) CCTV NVR/DVRs, managed Ethernet switches, routers, commercial signage systems and other similar use case scenarios. Basically, anything which can be networked and has an on-board GUI can work with the Clear Flow Cloud.

Dan Winterton, Sales and Marketing Director, Antiference, says, “Clear Flow networking products have proven a popular

and reliable wireless solution for creating and extending Wi-Fi networks and now a new addition to this range will enable remote cloud control of these systems.”

Dan adds, “The Clear Flow Cloud (CFC) has been developed for commercial or domestic installations where the integrator or client wants an improved service by adding a remote cloud-based control system giving the ability to identify network issues should they occur.

“As technology moves on and the world we live in changes, the services and products we offer must and have to change to adapt to the demands and expectations of the market.

“The Clear Flow Cloud system is all managed via our secure portal and with a set of unique login credentials, users can have access to their installations, make changes, update firmware etc or simply access devices remotely and securely via the cloud.”

Antiference provides the cloud portal services for free as part of a commitment to the industry and the market ensuring customers get the best possible solution.
