Uncompressed 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 and 1Gb LAN
We are pleased to announce the launch of the first HDBaseT™3 matrix product to the market
Using HDBaseT™3 technology, these powerful HDBaseT™ matrix support uncompromised 4K 60Hz 4:4:4 resolutions over distances up to 100m over a CAT6A. The new HMX88-18G and HMX44-18G come into their own with advanced audio features specifically designed for maximising the integration of AV sources in the modern home. Enhanced audio routing is achieved through the integrated audio matrix. This enables the audio from displays (via HDMI ARC or Optical S/PDIF), and all other sources to be embedded and routed through the system at the users discretion. The inclusion of a 1Gb Ethernet channel allows for LAN serving to all HDBT outputs / zones as required, IR and RS-232 pass-through, advanced EDID management, and PoC provide the ultimate flexibility.
The combination of these technology features enable our installation partners the ability to create a truly immersive AV experience throughout the home.

These awards, renowned for honouring the best and brightest in the smart building industry, provide a platform to showcase groundbreaking projects, cutting-edge technologies, and forward-thinking companies that are shaping the future of intelligent spaces. The Farnborough Exhibition Centre provides a state-of-the-art setting, perfectly suited to celebrate the innovation and creativity driving the evolution of smart buildings and will put the Smart Building Awards on the right footing venue-wise for years to come.
To make attending the awards ceremony even more convenient, there will be a shuttle bus running from the Village Hotel (where many attendees and exhibitors for the show and the awards choose to stay) to and from the awards venue. This ensures that all guests can easily access the event without any hassle, allowing everyone to focus on celebrating the achievements of the industry.

AWE EUROPE ANNOUNCED AS UK DISTRIBUTOR FOR STEALTH ACOUSTICS
AWE has been announced as the UK distributor of Stealth Acoustics and hosted an exclusive preview of brand-new models at AWE Expo, which took place at the AWE Show Apartment in Epsom on May 15-16.
Stealth Acoustics is known for its highperformance audio and video systems designed with a sleek and minimalist aesthetic. Its range of flat radiating invisible or hidden architectural speaker solutions, with which Stealth is synonymous, were first released in 2003. At AWE Expo, visitors got a first look at the new generation of LineaRadiance invisible speakers.
Stuart Tickle, Managing Director at AWE said, “Invisible and discrete speaker solutions is a growing marketplace, and one in which AWE has been keen to offer a class-leading solution for. To be frank, our no-compromise approach meant that we have had to wait patiently for the right partner and product, and Stealth Acoustics’ new Gen 8 models with a 17-year warranty offers just that for our customers”.
Vice President of Stealth Acoustics, Brian Azzano, added, “I couldn’t be more excited about our new distribution partnership with AWE in the UK. We’ve had a great run with our long-time friends and partners there over the years, but AWE is able to bring a level of scale and service to our brand that we feel is necessary
for an ever-expanding product category such as invisible speakers. AWE is a leading specialist distributor for some of the industry’s most prestigious brands. It’s unwavering commitment to exceptional customer service truly sets the standard in the industry. This is evident through AWE’s state-of-the-art show apartment, awardwinning training programs, and top-notch technical support team. We at Stealth Acoustics are thrilled to be included in AWE’s esteemed portfolio, and we look forward to a successful collaboration in bringing our cutting-edge invisible speaker solutions to the UK market.”
LineaRadiance is the 8th generation and next evolution of Stealth Acoustics’ flat radiating diaphragm speakers. The line-up can be plastered up to, plastered over, painted or wallpapered over, among other options.

KARMA-AV PARTNERS WITH FOUNDRY AT THE APEX OF RP22 ASSISTED DESIGN
AV distributor Karma-AV has announced its involvement with an imaginative new cinema design showcase called Foundry, conceived and created as the model application of RP22 practice by the people who helped to define it.
Foundry was conceived during the fouryear creation of CEDIA’s RP22 Immersive Audio Design Recommended Practice and is the brainchild of Ben Goff of Cinema Lusso, Christiaan Beukes, owner of Cape Town based integrator Sphere Custom and Cinema Lusso Creative Director (now resident in the UK),
and Officina Acustica Partner and CEDIA/ CTA RP22 Chair, Peter Aylett. In the process of defining RP22 guidelines, which focus on objective performance, they recognised the importance of providing the industry with a demonstration facility that transcended the usual limitations of brand or budget.
Built by Cinema Lusso in partnership with Karma AV and Officina Acustica, Foundry comprises two rooms: an uncompromising cinema space and a luxury media room space.
“Foundry is not your average showroom. Not a space where you’ll see brand logos, lines of product or stacks of boxes, said Christiaan.
“Foundry is a space that’s been thoughtfully designed and ergonomically engineered with the aim of pushing the boundaries of performance and innovative aesthetics together in such an unobtrusive manner that it doesn’t seem designed at all…it’s as much an industry wide R&D facility as it is our showroom, office, design studio, training/meeting space and CPD outreach venue.”
From a global choice of speaker brands, the team at Foundry selected Perlisten Audio and Ascendo Immersive Audio from Karma’s line-up as having the performance and data quality necessary to complete ‘textbook’ RP22guided installations.
Said Ben, “Both rooms deliver the highest performance audio and video reproduction possible within their physical constraints using a free choice of products guided exclusively by our technical requirements. Speaker specification for each room led us in totally different directions to products from different continents but sharing a dedication to creating exceptional solutions to specific engineering challenges. Little coincidence that Perlisten Audio and Ascendo Immersive Audio also shared a partner in the UK, having chosen Karma AV as their distributor.”
Commenting on the partnership, KarmaAV’s Ian Severs added, “We’re delighted to have been invited by Foundry to supply speakers from our fastest growing high-end lines and we recognise the importance of solid engineering and the transparency of performance data to this choice. Perlisten and Ascendo allow us to offer integrators a great range of technically advanced products for the best product fit when designing truly immersive experiences in a wide variety of project applications.”

as the Made in Italy trademark, reflecting the heritage of both our brands and delivering our clients with a uniquely tuned in-car audio experience.”
The Lamborghini Revuelto sound system is a culmination of acoustical engineering and Sonus faber heritage, crafted to deliver natural, clear and detailed sound and give the listener the ability to experience audio in its purest form. The system features seven speakers in total, with one tweeter and one mid-woofer in each door, one full-range in the dashboard as centre channel, and two integrated full-range speakers with surround function, which are positioned right behind pilot and co-pilot enriching the sound experience by deepening its depth and enveloping occupants in an authentic acoustic environment, said the maker.
The centre channel speaker is designed and tuned to provide a distinctive sound experience directly in front of the pilot and co-pilot, helping recreate a very detailed soundstage with a masterful symmetry of sound.

There is no backlighting unit, meaning each TV requires fewer materials to produce than a conventional LED TV.
LG OLED also employs many components made from recycled plastics. These are shipped in eco-packaging made from recyclable materials and feature single-color printing.
OLED CARE
Designed to optimize the TV’s condition, OLED Care provides multiple features to ensure longevity and viewing optimisation. Among other simple corrective and diagnostic tool, the Memory Optimizer function will clean up unused apps or unnecessary memory, while the Screen Self-diagnosis can run a test to verify that the image signal is working correctly.
EXHIBITING NOW AT AWE

Industry joins together to celebrate a million pound worth of cinema room installations
“This wonderful evening was a celebration of an industry coming together. And, through the incredible generosity of those attending, Together For Cinema can further develop the good work that makes such a difference to those who use the rooms.”
Ian Morrish, togetherforcinema.co.uk
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF PULSE CINEMAS
Mike Beatty, Managing Director, and Kapes Patel, Business Development and Technical Director, co-founders of Pulse Cinemas, explain how the new company structure has freed them up to focus on innovation and support, offering even more added value for dealers.
Mike explains, “Our new company structure has shifted much of the day-to-day noise of running a busy company and has allowed both of us to concentrate on delivering the added value and dealer support the company was built on and that we both specialise in. These days we can focus all of our energy and experience delivering for our customers.”
Kapes adds, “We started Pulse Cinemas because we love music and movies and demonstrating the systems we help create to
dealers and end users through special initiatives, events and gathering together the best brands around. As Pulse Cinemas grew, we could see the time that we had to spend doing these core deliverables shrinking. The new structure means we can be laser focused on doing what we started the company to do in the first place.”
Mike continues, “We are becoming a better version of ourselves as we crystallise into the true version that we always wanted Pulse Cinemas to be. Every day now we get to work on
the business instead of working in the business. We are also able to support our team more effectively and help them deliver the very best for dealers and ultimately end users as well.”
Just one recent example of this freeing up of time is attendance at the recent High-End Show in Munich, meeting brands and dealers and interacting with the market. Both Kapes and Mike plan to be in attendance at many more events this year and into the future. More time to be proactive rather than reactive has allowed the planning and execution of a whole collection of events and initiatives already this year.
Mikes explains, “At Pulse Cinemas we have held a series of Trinnov Waveforming events, celebrated 50 years of Krix with a special BBQ, and we have also partnered with Invision and got out on the road with showcases for the AVA brand of smart remotes and toured the UK with the Source To Seat initiative that highlighted all the high performance home cinema equipment and systems available from Pulse Cinemas and Invision.”
Kapes adds, “We have also been able to make time to showcase to a large number of dealers the upgrades and changes we have made to our demonstration facilities both here at Pulse Cinemas HQ and at our other sites as well. The Pulse Cinemas technical team and I have been able to spend more time upgrading, tuning and working on our demonstration spaces
ESSENTIAL PULSE CINEMAS 18 JUNE 2024 /Essentialinstall @Install_mag /essential-install-mag essentialinstall.com
to make them more powerful than ever before.
“The Main Cinema now boasts WaveForming functionality and madVR processing partnering Sony projection; the performance in this space is best it has ever been. The Media Room has also had Sony projection added and is impressing visitors even more than before. We are also in the middle of planning upgrades for the Small Cinema and also new products and displays for the reception/kitchen and training room spaces. However, we are not stopping there; we have big plans for space that was used for warehousing in the past. Stay tuned because we have some really exciting plans for this part of Pulse Cinemas HQ. We are also working with our partners at Invision looking at upgrades for the Innovation House at Bracknell site. Exciting times all round.”
The duo has also found more time to spend time on other special projects such as Mike’s Legends podcast series. “This was something that initially I was a little reluctant to do. It was outside of my comfort zone,” says Mike, “but with more time to spend exploring new possibilities I have immensely enjoyed engaging with people from all walks of our industry, and some outside of it, learning from them and informing our own knowledge base and decision-making process. I have spoken with the immensely experienced Kevin Andrews, founder and creative director of installation company Ideaworks, the inspirational Priscilla Morgan, COO at Kaleidescape and industry veteran and founder of Together For Cinema, Ian Morrish. I also spoke with Ionit Sabatello, relationship healer and spiritual mentor to discuss mental health and wellbeing. We have more exciting people lined up for our podcast series as we explore how our sector really works and what we are about; not box shifting but servicing the needs and desires of our customers.”
Another area the new arrangement has allowed more time for is the DécorCinema concept.
Mike reveals, “We have big plans for this concept which is based around creating cutting edge interior design and high-performance home cinema and delivering something the market has not seen before in a repeatable and identifiable format. We will reveal more plans for DécorCinema very soon.”
Kapes adds, “For my part, an exciting part of the sector and what Pulse Cinemas can offer is in advanced window shading systems. We have a refocused and re-energised team able to deliver everything installers need via Lutron’s excellent range of systems, so get in touch if this is something you would like to include in more of your projects.”
Kapes and Mike also explain that both will be out in the field more often than before, supporting sales staff and dealers in order to discover the best solutions for projects and create more successful interactions between the company and its installation partners.
Training initiatives are also to receive a boost as the Pulse Cinemas sales team are now tasked with feeding back vital information to help shape the training offering right across the company.
Kapes reveals, “We are working on training programmes for Trinnov WaveForming, room acoustic treatments and automated shading. Working with our partners across our brands and with the Invision team, we are looking to
provide the very best training around to improve our dealers skills in some of the most crucial parts of the industry.”
Reaching out further than before is also a big focus for the Pulse team. Mike says, “We are making it our business to attract new customers into our industry. There has been a tendency right across our sector to perhaps rely on established customers, but for the industry to grow we are working on initiatives including DécorCinema to help make this happen. Our expanded and improved demonstration spaces are open for not only our own events, but for dealers to bring their customers and hold their own events, so just pick up the phone and talk to us and let’s plan something that will impress customers old on new.”
So busy times ahead and for a long time, as Mike underlines, “Both of us have been asked if we will soon be leaving Pulse Cinemas. This could not be further from the truth. We are both in this for the long haul and made the changes to ensure the longevity of the company, our own involvement and our ability to concentrate on our core skills. Neither of us can play golf, so our destiny for now and the foreseeable future is at the helm of Pulse Cinemas helping our dealers deliver the very best systems and support that they can. Speak to us soon and learn more about how we can deliver for you.”

TIME FOR HI-FI’S ULTRA TEAM TO ENTER CI
Focal and Naim, one of high-end Hi-Fi’s most celebrated synergies, now has a route into CI through CUK, says MD Stuart Thomson.
In a unique offer to integrators in the UK and Ireland, CUK is poised to unite Focal’s high quality architectural speaker line-up with a matching range of flexible, CI-facing amplification and source products from sister company Naim Audio. Designed to dovetail with Focal speakers, the newly arrived Naim CI Series comprises a streamer/amplifier called the CI-Uniti 102 and matching mono and eightchannel amp platforms, the CI-NAP 101 and CI-NAP 108.
CI SPECIALS
Even though two-channel Naim products have been available to integrators for a number of years, the advent of a truly CI-oriented range is a step-change for the company and a big plus for CUK, given our long-standing success with Focal in driving wider adoption in residential and commercial CI. Lending a powerful new brand chemistry to our offer, the addition of the Naim CI Series is a perfectly natural and exclusive fit for everyone involved, especially our customers: integrators and end users alike.
This is because the CI Series is specifically engineered to work with Focal CI/Integrated loudspeakers from the high quality 100 and 300 Series architectural speakers to the formidable 1000 Series in-wall/on-wall/in-ceiling models. Integrators deploying any of Focal’s solutions in residential or commercial applications can now further enhance speed of deployment and system performance by making them Naim powered. On the flip side, their clients get the very highest audio streaming quality for cinema/ media rooms, garden or distributed audio from a brand pairing globally recognised for audiophile fidelity and prestige.
DREAM STREAMER
Developed from the multi-award-winning Uniti Atom, Naim’s new source for CI is the CI-Uniti 102 streamer/amplifier. Sharing such celebrated technical provenance, the CIUniti 102 offers all the streaming capabilities you would expect: TIDAL, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, Spotify, UPnP, internet radio, Airplay 2 and ChromeCast. Hooking up via HDMI, Bluetooth, S/PDIF and RCA, this super compact design is also Dante enabled, allowing the CI-Uniti 102 to play audio sources
existing on the Dante network. Power is from a prodigious 2 x 150W amplifier (@ 8 ohms), and RCA outputs allow the CI-Uniti 102 to be connected to the CI-NAP101 and CI-NAP108 in larger deployments.
MONOMAGIC
The Naim CI-NAP 101 is a high-performance mono power amplifier perfect for home cinema environments when driving, say, the ultimate Focal 1000 IWLCR Utopia and 1000 IWSUB Utopia loudspeakers (as deployed at our Ascot showrooms), as well as a raft of more challenging drive scenarios, delivering a sizeable 800W into a 4ohm load and being stable at 2ohms for great versatility. Many commercial applications are also well served with a capability to deliver 240W on a 100V circuit, making the CI-Nap 101 ideal for driving Focal 100 ‘T’ series in ceiling and outdoor products.
STRAIGHT EIGHT
To further enhance system capabilities and integration versatility, the Naim CI-NAP 108 brings eight channels of 150W (@ 8 ohms) to the party, perfect for surround and height channels in small to mid-sized cinema rooms.
The CI-NAP 108 is equally at home in multizone residential and commercial applications, delivering world renowned Naim quality around the home and for high-end commercial projects especially in retail and hospitality applications.
UNITED BY EASY CONTROL
Enabling easy set-up, Focal/Naim CI systems share ‘Focal & Naim Manager’ software and a ‘Speakers Profiles’ feature, created to help you customise single or multi-room installations. It’s controlled through the ‘Focal & Naim’ app and also compatible with home automation drivers for Crestron, Control4, RTI, Savant and Elan.
It was only a matter of time before the combined force of Focal and Naim Audio, so dominant in two-channel Hi-Fi, took shape in CI. That time has arrived under the exclusive auspices of CUK, supported by our promise of market leading product availability and system design back-up. For an industry built on quality, performance and innovation, the timing, in fact, couldn’t be better.

THE ONLY WAY IS ESSEX AV
Tell us about your company. What do you specialise in? Who is involved?
Essex AV (EAV) began trading in 2020 during the lockdown largely due to the rise in sales of large screen TVs with few installers to fit them. It’s true to say that we Essex folk do love a larger-than-life TV!
I began the business alone, not necessarily expecting this to become a longer-term venture. However, with my 30-year AV career under the belt and a passion for all things residential, EAV quickly acquired glowing reviews and delivered some of the more challenging projects out there.
We offer three main service categories: TV Installation, Smart Homes, Home Cinema, this seems to simplify what for many consumers can be a complicated sales journey. The company has organically grown and serves throughout Essex and North London. The team includes three additional AV/ build engineers and an NIC Electrician. We often collaborate with trusted industry friends such as Cliff Stammers of CleverRooms and our friends at Sevenoaks Sound & Vision, whom we regularly install for.
Tell us about the projects you are working on right now
A whole house system comprising of 120in ALR screen, 75in TV screen behind media wall, Lutron lighting throughout, Unifi network, C4 control, Lilin CCTV and Entry Access systems; this project is scheduled for completion midsummer 2024. We are also working on several media walls range from 65 to 85in screens. We design and visualise these and then install using our own build engineers.
We are also currently fitting a 150in daylight screen with a Christie high brightness
companies. I believe that people have changed since the pandemic days and are now more discerning and selective on whom they invite to work within their homes. I also have an open conversation beforehand with each new client as it is vital to me that each new project is ‘the right fit’ for all parties involved. This model is working and I enjoy regular business which my team and I deliver mostly with a smile upon our faces.

What areas of the smart home and luxury AV sector need to improve and how?
AV distribution companies. I’ll be honest and in no way use this platform to launch an attack but must say that AV wholesaler/ distributors are the ones who on a weekly basis cause us the most frustration. Typically, most are quick to process orders, bank funds and then go on to break promises regarding stock-holdings and availability. I hear of similar experiences with other sectors such as home furnishings and it makes me wonder if the ‘distributor’ model should change. Perhaps one of your entrepreneurial readers might disrupt this market, maybe an organised buying group of respected installers; you have my fullest support!
Also, there is and always has been a ‘superior attitude’ worn by many in the industry. Clients don’t like this, however. I’m not too keen to change this as it makes our offering something of a fresh breath of air, so, thanks guys.
Do you think training needs to be improved? If so, how?
I think our industry does provide some good training, particularly the CEDIA model. I would like though to see some formal legislation in order to filter out the amateurs of which there are still a frightening amount of. I have recently been speaking with local authorities and schools in my area with a personal interest in raising awareness of our industry to appeal to the next generation. It would be good if our industry made it possible and engaging for those with a few decades experience to engage in such programs.
Is there a project you are particularly proud of?
Ocean Pearl – smarthome. I worked this project with my long-time industry friend Cliff Stammers. Together we designed, supplied and installed mostly Crestron AV/Control and lighting throughout the property which was used by a growing family including a young son with severe disabilities. This project made a difference to him, his family and carers. It made us work with passion and great desire to exceed expectations and has led to a friendship rarely
found between client and contractor. Cliff and I have laughed together, pulled hair together, screamed, cried and rejoiced. It’s a great project and one we will always be fond of.
Are there any brands or products you particularly like working with?
I’m pleased that in today’s marketplace there are few poor products, reliability and build quality is good even at relatively low cost and operating systems are now user friendly, led by the app driven market. We do have some favoured solutions and I’d suggest that where possible some consistency between projects is important. For example, we use Unifi IT networks, each one with cloud key access which we maintain remotely with failover backups where feasible. We’ve used most of the usual in-ceiling/in-wall solutions, most quite vanilla but recently used the Dali Audio upper end products and were smitten.
Sonos is hard to beat in terms of reliability, UI and ease of installation though we do like installing ports via a managed switch into a high-quality digital power amp per zone, thus enjoying audio performance with ease. We moved away from Crestron last year due to supply chain issues and are currently exploring other control solutions and are mid-way through a number of Control4 projects all going well. We should mention the advancement in home projection systems and have installed ALR screen and short throw systems from Hisense and LG, making 100/ 120in screens possible to a wider home audience which is fantastic.
What is the best and the worst thing that has happened to you on site?
Best: We recently re-built into a new property (converted barn) a client’s existing Artcoustic system. We built a media wall, new projector and lighting system. The client, quite typically cash rich but time poor came to me the following week on-site, face beaming as he opened up on really needing to gain quality time with his family. They adjusted the rooms’ lighting to a ‘cool pink’ and watched the Barbie movie with wife and daughters – “the best family time in
ages” were his words. A reminder that we sell more than ‘AV stuff’, we sell experiences.
Worst: Yo Cliff, it’s a quarter to five on Friday afternoon, let’s do an update on that processor…… We’ve all been there, won’t do that again!
What is the most unusual client request you have had?
I’m guessing you want a printable answer. Well, I did recently climb a customer’s tree to free up a bird-scaring drone the daft chap had been trying to invent! Lovely guy but I’m always wondering what’s next!
How do you see the sector changing in the future?
It’s known that I have a passion for the immersive technologies, in particular interactive content, the kind where the viewer chooses what’s next, which camera angle for sports etc. I expect XR will overlay the physical installation with enhanced digital experience. I’ve used VR to aid visualisation of the ‘unbuilt’. My belief is that we are still somewhat behind in the use of XR. These technologies will explode with the likes of Apple producing lighter, smarter, cooler user equipment and just as most AV engineers have by default become IT experts, anyone with knowledge of the immersive technologies will have something of a head start as AV/IT/XR all become a ‘one roof’ solution.
Are there persons/organisations/ companies that have been particularly inspirational in your work life?
Speaking honestly, my journey in the AV industry has been bumpy at times and as such I haven’t formed close friendships or looked to mentors or individuals for inspiration. I’ve not modelled us on other company patterns and I’m not entirely convinced our industry is a beacon of goodness. However, there are good people amongst us and what I endeavour to do with whatever time remains of my career is to be focussed, work hard, enjoy the ride and in turn hopefully inspire one or two others.
I will select a name, though not an individual I know but know of: Ian Morrish with his Together for Cinema project has to stand out as someone to take an example from. In a similar vein to the Ocean Pearl project, there is another level of satisfaction an inner worth that comes from giving to others. Ian, I do salute all of your work.
Away from work, what are you interests/hobbies?
My interests outside of work include playing guitar and piano (badly… but hey). I also kayak and live close to the sea. If I go for more than a few weeks without seeing a body of water I get twitchy so won’t be moving to mid-state US anytime soon. Another interest which keeps me in good shape is Kung Fu, or at least flying… as often I’m faced against a huge plumber who likes to see how far he can throw me!
COMMENT FROM THE COALFACE 24 JUNE 2024 /Essentialinstall @Install_mag /essential-install-mag essentialinstall.com
My greatest achievements though are not work related. I have four children I am immensely proud of and am now a grandfather to two boys and enjoy being the cool albeit naughty granddad who has so many tricks to teach these young’uns!
You have magic powers and get one wish concerning the smart home and luxury AV market. What are going to wish for?
This links to an earlier answer and its ‘better content, particularly interactive’. This would raise the game amongst AV installers as it might lend itself to a more immersive and engaging experience, moving us away from selling kit and into selling experience. Extended displays, enhanced lighting, motion / eye tracking. Imagine content dependent on these technologies becoming something we need to build into our solutions, cool!
Favourite music and movies? What are you watching/ listening to right now?
Just seen Civil War directed by Alex Garland. The first in a while of movies that provoked thought and some anxiety as it seems not too far from possibility along with a few jump out of skin moments – a fantastic soundtrack too. Typically, my choice of films as I’ve grown older is not the ‘crash bang wallop’ usually demo’d in dealer showrooms, though Dune II should be included here as a great film and awesome AV performance. I enjoy intimate storytelling and some notable movies of late I’ve enjoyed include One Life with Anthony Hopkins and Empire of Light, Olivia Coleman. Music wise, oh so much but as Radiohead have always been a huge inspiration I’ve been enjoying the new material from Johnny and Thom as The Smile – check them out.
You can invite three people (living or not) out for a meal/ drink. Who’s coming?
Prince. He’d sign my guitar and show us a few new tricks. I can’t think of anyone in recent centuries with as much in-born unfiltered musicality. A huge loss but what a legacy he’s left.
Stanley Kubrick, just to get a glimmer into what ran through that great mind of his, plus he’d probably scare the other guests which is a bonus!
Jimmy Carr, that’s my wildcard. I’ve always loved his humour but until recent podcasts hadn’t realised the depth of his intelligence and positive outlook. It’s been very helpful to me and I would love a chance to pick that brain of his. I reckon I’d make him laugh too!
We’d go to a shabby Wetherspoons, Jimmy could get a tax receipt, Kubrick would take inspiration from some odd-ball for a movie, Prince would cr@p himself – would be a night to remember!

SHOULD YOU TARGET LARGE OR SMALL PROJECTS?
EI’s resident data wizard, data solutions architect evangelist at D-Tools and ex- editor-in-chief at CE Pro, Jason Knott examines the impact of project size.
2023 Contract Sizes
Most integrators target having a mix of project sizes, but which are better for your business from a profit standpoint? One of the most insightful aspects of D-Tools Cloud is its ability to get a glimpse into how markets perform. Recently, we got curious and did a deeper dive into project profitability as it relates to contract size and the results are revealing. The data shows a vast difference in product margin on smaller projects compared to what integrators can earn on larger installations.
The D-Tools data is in U.S. dollars, but the general trend in terms of project sizes is likely similar for integrators in euros (€) or pounds (£). Based on data from nearly 50,000 contracts completed in D-Tools Cloud in 2023, the average breakdown of project sizes shows about one in five installations is less than $1,000. Meanwhile, more than half of all projects fall between $1,000 and $10,000. On the opposite end of the spectrum, 3% of projects are more than $100,000.
But the shocking element is when we look at the profit margins based on project size. Product margin on projects in excess of $10,000 – whether in the $10,000 to $25,000 range, $25,000 to $50,000 range, $50,000 to $100,000 range, or $100,000+ range – are remarkably consistent when it comes to gross margin. Equipment margins are consistently between 41% and 44% on all those larger contract sizes.
Interestingly though, equipment margins on smaller projects dipped considerably. On contracts that are less than $1,000, integrators are earning only 14% markup on their equipment. For projects between $1,000 and $10,000, the results are slightly better, with 31% equipment margin. It makes sense…
many of these smaller projects involve consumer-grade products like TVs, smart speakers and thermostats that have lower retail price points and are ‘shoppable’ by the customer. On the flip side, a large project that might include a projector, floorstanding loudspeakers, ornate lighting fixtures and lots of smart home controls offers integrators leeway to markup these expensive products.
So, if the product margins are so slim on smaller installations, why would an integration company ever want to take on a project less than $10,000, or especially one that is less than $1,000? There are some good reasons. Small projects are valuable for custom integration businesses because they keep the
crew busy. If you focus solely on large projects, there is the inevitable lull that occurs during the construction cycle. If another contractor on the job hits a snag or is running behind, it can often push you’re your scheduled time on the project. You still have to pay your staff during that hiatus, so that’s where the value of smaller installations come in. They provide much-needed cashflow for your business.
There is also the idea that integration companies that focus solely on smaller jobs – mounting TVs, installing thermostats, setting up soundbars and wireless multiroom audio systems, etc. – don’t require highly skilled, highly paid technicians. Indeed, if an integration company is shunning complex installations, they can possibly avoid having to hire positions like project managers and programmers. That reduces payroll and can boost overall profitability.
By the way, there is some positive news regarding smaller projects in terms of labour profitability. No matter what size the contract is, integrators are able to achieve solid labour margins between 51% and 56%.
The conclusion from this data is that larger projects are better for business profitability. Find your sweet spot and pursue clients and projects that fit. The little jobs that seem easy and provide quick cash may not make sense in the long run.

THE GOAT IS SHAVED*
EI took a trip to the newly created Artcoustic Showroom in the beautiful Essex countryside to discover a reimagined world demonstrating what the Artcoustic range and team can deliver to dealers and their customers.
First impressions on arrival are positive as the new site is situated in a roomy estate in attractive parkland, setting the tone for a luxury and special experience. Paul Cummin, Sales Manager at Artcoustic, explains, “We wanted our showroom and the Artcoustic brand to be at the forefront of industry thinking. This is towards correct project and system design, not just showcasing great products. “We made ourselves the client for the purposes of this showroom – what is the correct design and process for each brief? So, we started with the brief…what are we trying to achieve, and why? How can this translate to an installation company bringing a live project to us?
“We have created a beautiful showroom, in a stunning location, that enhances the experience for both dealers and clients. The outcome is a space that is designed towards supporting our dealers, giving them the best chance possible to win their next project.”
Paul adds, “Before taking the keys to the showroom, we had the drawings. Thinking
carefully about each area, we then designed each of the eight systems to meet the brief we set. Deciding what we wanted to show – a party system, a realistic TV system, an affordable highperformance cinema and flagship statement cinema were all agreed, then the design process started. This was treated as we do any client project, so the process is solid and proven.”
The spacious and easily navigable showroom offers a welcoming space, supporting the idea of a high-performance experience even before the systems spring to life.
Paul explains, “The design process that works for almost any system is based on three performance variables and three client lead factors. For performance, it’s taken from industry measurable standards of Dynamic Range, Spatial Resolution and Timbre Matching. The client choices are then either financial, practical or aesthetic. Or indeed a combination of these. We looked at each area with these all in mind, addressing potential client brief and likely realistic choices. The end
result is that we have commercial and domestic applications highlighted, with different levels of those performance criteria.
“Our uniquely scalable range is fully utilised here, with over 70 speakers all permanently ready to play. Artcoustic has a product specifically suited to almost any application –with a range of speakers that can play from 1m to 48m across the various RP22 levels!”
Design challenges are inherent in any endeavour looking to deliver at this level, but taking the right approach has paid dividends in the creation of the space.
Paul says, “Design challenges were all dealt with early on in the process, so by the time it came to installing products, it was straightforward. We have a low ceiling in the larger cinema room, but sight lines and practical issues were solved long before in conversations with Cinema Luxe, who assisted us in the design and execution of the space.
The Artcoustic showroom features: Rako, Screen Excellence, Barco, Sony, Anthem, Trinnov, PowerSoft, Silent Gliss, Hoody, Elan, AcousticBlok, Webro, Cinema Luxe, Design Flow, Bullet Train HDMI

simple
“Technically, we are blessed with a highly sensitive range of loudspeakers, so we have managed to have eight systems, over 70 speakers with 2km of speaker cable and only require one rack. We don’t need a lot of power, so a system with 9.1.4 or even 15.4.8 for our larger room, does not need huge power amps. We utilised PowerSofts’ excellent range of four channel power amps which helped a great deal, and Anthem’s AVRs and MDX amps which again take up very little space for what they can achieve with high sensitivity loudspeakers. The larger cinema room needed to be a statement from us. We believe this to be as good as anything else out there, with a 15.4.8 configuration. This goes beyond Dolby’s white paper guidelines, but as a select approved member of the Dolby DARDT
program, we were able to use that software to design the room perfectly. We trust and follow the process, letting the DARDT program tell us how many speakers and where they need to be. The end result is incredible, with a subtlety often missing in ‘cinema demos’ and a presence and power when required.”
Naturally calibration and system tuning have been part of the story as well, Paul reveals, “We use a Barco projector in the larger room and they made sure that was calibrated correctly. For the audio, it’s a huge part of our service and knowledge, so we spent time making sure each system was set up exactly as we wanted. We had previously simulated the bass response in each system, so we had no surprises with room modes. Once calibrated we checked each system with pink noise and independent
software to ensure the system was delivering what we expected. We are very well practiced in Anthem’s ARC software, as well as calibrating the Trinnov in the larger cinema perfectly.
EI was curious what part the CEDIA RP22 standards played in the space? Paul explains, “We are huge supporter of CEDIA’s RP22 document. We have been designing systems for many years to industry guidelines, but previously it has been disjointed and hard to translate to a client. RP22 is the first time we’ve had this information presented in a way we can discuss with installers and clients. Now, we can explain the difference between systems and client specifications in terms that mean something real – dynamic range, spatial resolution and timbre matching.

The space offers an easy to navigate and logical journey through the brand’s offering
“This is how we approached each system, to explain the difference between them in these terms, and so a client can see the link between what they experience here and what we are proposing for them. We think this is often missing at B2B showrooms where the emphasis is solely on the brand. We want the emphasis to be on the experience, and then the client chooses the experience they want. It translates in the sales process. It doesn’t end up with a demo of one system that is nothing like what the client will have. RP22 is a huge help for us to be able to deliver certainty to a client. We needed the same certainty designing the systems. By using RP22 standards and being able to measure and predict outcomes before the build
started is powerful. We had confidence in our own designs and knowledge of RP22, and the result was exactly as predicted.”
PARTNERSHIPS
The design of the space was created in partnership with Cinema Luxe, provider of bespoke design and interior fit out solutions to AV professionals. Paul explains, “Having worked with Cinema Luxe on previous projects, we understood what they bring to a project and the synergy between our services. The partnership was agreed early on and were all excited by the potential. We needed the cinema rooms to have the same wow effect as the performance.
“That ‘wow’ as you walk in is a vital part of the whole experience. We can then ‘wow’ with the performance of each system. Artcoustic is a speaker brand, we only do loudspeakers. But we understand that every project is a holistic combination of many factors. Cinema Luxe’s room design and delivery of them, is second to none. Cinema Luxe has a respect for the sound and picture quality required for these rooms, and bridge the gap between installation and the interior design world. The result is two cinema rooms that are completely on brand with our Scandinavian heritage, with different levels of experience and price points. We are really proud of how modern and contemporary the rooms look and feel, appealing to everyone in the decision-making process.”
Darren Barker, Design Director, says, “Cinema Luxe were delighted when approached to deliver both the design and fit-out of the cinema rooms at Artcoustic’s new HQ. With that privilege also came the responsibility of ensuring the brand was represented in the right way. “We called on our design experience to tread the fine line between sleek, Scandinavian design that reflected the brand’s Danish Heritage, whilst delivering a UK relevant showcase with minimal technical compromises. One of the biggest design successes here is how effortless this all feels. The due diligence in the background and attention to the details translates to rooms that not only perform superbly but align with Artcoustic’s core values and design DNA. I

am incredibly proud of our team’s delivery of this project and how it showcases our industry leading design and finish.”
A key message from Artcoustic during the visit is a strong commitment to genuine and holistic support for dealers and a promise of honesty, integrity and credibility.
Paul says, “Support for our dealers is our main priority. We want to empower our dealers with the tools to confidently present solutions to their client, with certainty and design integrity. Our presentation packs are second to none, helping to explain choices transparently. This is presented in a way a client can understand and make informed choices. The showroom is an extension of this. We tested this process on ourselves, we became the client, questioning each choice, seeing the technical evidence openly so we could be sure that each product was chosen for the right brief. It’s a delivery on our technical promises.
“The process is clear, transparent, and repeatable. It was followed here on every system, so there is an honesty when promising the same experience for the client. Dealers coming here are taken through the processes, seeing the transparency in each step, and empowering them to do the same for their clients. Dealers have found this a unique and refreshing approach. Technical measurements, see through marketing claims, and taking dealers through the simple calculator for any product can be enlightening. Seeing how much power is required for any speaker to reach a target SPL at a given distance is fact and its revealing to see if what you thought could do it, can actually do it. Our golf club analogy is an eye-opening moment here too.
Ultimately the purpose of this showroom is for dealers to showcase what’s possible for their clients. The outcomes Artcoustic is working hard towards include having dealers win more projects, more often with higher value, resulting
in happier clients and more referrals. Paul says, “Mutual success is the goal. We have been delighted how many integrators have been already, with quite a few seeing Artcoustic in a new light. We have come such a long way from the ‘picture speaker’ company and experiencing these systems has been a real lightbulb moment for those that thought they ‘knew Artcoustic’. That’s hugely satisfying for us.”
With such an all-encompassing project, it’s a challenge to select one part as a standout, but that lies in the success of this project in that it genuinely feels like a whole experience. The rooms are very pleasant to be in, even before the systems are demoed – it does feel like a very relatable space that customers will feel at home in. However, asked to pick any aspects that the team is particularly happy with since launch Paul underlines, “Experiences are designed, they don’t just happen. From a system point of view, it’s the party systems and the cinema rooms. They always put a smile on faces, and we get a kick from that. What we really enjoy though is playing the clips of movies and music that get real reactions. We’ve had (happy) tears, many jump scares and a room full of burly men singing
along to Barbie. The experience is everything, the technical processes are vital, but this isn’t a dull science experiment. It’s ultimately all about the emotions, the experience, the fun and the joy. To quote a recent client, “I had no idea it could sound this good!”
This is a really excellent space to add to the industry’s design, demonstration and dealer learning experience capabilities. The team creates really fun demos, understanding that movies are about telling stories that people relate to, not blowing people’s ears back. The use of music and concert footage in the demos is also excellent, adding another layer of excitement and appreciation of what can be experienced at home.

CEDIA NEXTGEN: INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION
Ben Jarvis, Sales Director at CEDIA member company ATI, underlines the impact of inspiring the next generation of smart home professionals.
As Sales Director at ATI, I’ve always been passionate about leveraging the resources and opportunities provided by CEDIA. From presenting CPD courses for design and build professionals, to embracing CEDIA activities and benefits, I’ve witnessed first-hand the impact these initiatives can have on individuals and the industry as a whole. However, my recent experience representing CEDIA NextGen at Chertsey High School’s career day opened my eyes to a whole new realm of possibilities and excitement.
CEDIA NextGen aims to ignite awareness and interest in the smart home industry among the next generation. This involves reaching out to local educational institutions and students, providing them with insights into the diverse career opportunities within our industry.
As the students (year 7 to year 11) navigated through various career options, from healthcare to the armed forces, I proudly presented smart home technology, armed with demos and enthusiasm. What struck me the most was the unexpected level of engagement, especially from the younger years. Contrary to my initial thoughts, these students displayed genuine curiosity and familiarity with the technologies showcased.
My NextGen Tech Kits provided the students with a mini demo set up - featuring automated blinds, music systems, Alexa demonstrations, and more. It was great to see how these kits captured their attention and how effortlessly many of them interacted with
these technologies, which showed the impact of growing up in a digitally integrated world.
I quickly realised that many of these students were unaware that a career in the smart home industry was a viable option. To them, it was simply a facet of modern life, readily available in most homes. Witnessing their positive reactions and genuine interest reinforced the importance of initiatives like CEDIA NextGen in bridging this gap of awareness and opportunity.
I firmly believe that utilising platforms like CEDIA NextGen equips aspiring individuals with the foundational knowledge and guidance needed to embark on a fulfilling career journey. By starting from the ground up, understanding the basics and exploring the vast potential of
the smart home industry, these young minds are empowered to shape the future of our industry. Supporting and nurturing the next generation is important for the longevity and evolution of our industry. As industry professionals, we must serve as mentors to foster a culture of innovation. Reflecting on my experience at Chertsey High School, I’m filled with optimism for the future of the smart home industry. Initiatives like CEDIA NextGen serve as a catalyst for change, inspiring and empowering the next generation of industry leaders.

BIG AUDIO DYNAMITE!
EI took a trip to Monitor Audio HQ to get the latest from this brand with big plans for the future, delivering high-quality solutions and support for dealers and installers. Check out our QnA with Michael Johnson, Global Marketing Director.
Describe the shift in approach the company has taken to the home cinema and smart home market.
The custom install market segment is a very important part of Monitor Audio’s business. We have grown within this segment significantly over the last decade as trends and technologies have progressed and end-customers have become more aware of the possibilities of smart home and AV options. Furthermore, we have worked hard on ensuring we have the right partner network in place.
We have always been very consistent with the product offering we have to support the requirements of whole house sound integration. Over the years the portfolio has grown significantly to ensure that we support the myriad of application based speakers, subwoofers and electronics, and that we have evolved the technologies to offer exceptional value, not only in terms of ‘pound vs performance’ but value to the integrator, ensuring that the products are robust, easy to install and are available as and when required.
Tell us about the main three brands in the group.
We have three British brands within Monitor Audio Group (MAG). Monitor Audio, established in 1972, which is very well known for its broad range of high-fidelity speakers. Roksan, established in 1985, that is known for its audiophile turntables and electronics (streamers, amplifiers and CD transports) and Blok, established in 2003, which covers Hi-Fi racks and furniture. MAG can offer a consumer a huge array of high-fidelity, complementary products to satisfy most audio applications.
Tell us about the new demo and experience space you have planned. 2024 is shaping up to be a great year for MAG. Shortly we’ll be embarking on the development and construction of our experience centre, which we’re going to call ‘Audition Room’. This is an anagram of Monitor Audio, believe it or not. It’ll feature, a lounge, showroom and presentation space, museum and first-class AV demonstration facilities. This will enable us to open the doors of MAG HQ to all our global and UK partners, as well media and end-customers. We’ll be able to offer more face-to-face training, hold events and it will allow us to showcase our products in the best possible way.
product design approaches are paramount ESSENTIAL MONITOR AUDIO 36 JUNE 2024 /Essentialinstall @Install_mag /essential-install-mag essentialinstall.com
Cinergy dedicated home cinema speakers Sophisticated
Home cinema/install products – tell us about the key offerings here.
Creator Series is our fourth generation of architectural speakers. Cinergy is our entry product line into fully integrated ‘serious’ home cinema speaker systems and Platinum Series, is a range topping two-channel and AV speaker series, that sits across CI and more traditional speaker applications.
Each range is concise and well considered. MAPP – the Monitor Audio Partner Programme, enables us to work with partners to understand wants and needs so we can deliver products that are precisely what are customers desire and utilise core Monitor Audio technologies, such as iterations of our metal cone drivers, something MA has pioneered over 40 years. They each hit key price points, enabling partners and endcustomers to have options, and significantly, they are designed and engineered at MAG HQ here in Essex, UK. All products are created under our ‘Transparent Design Philosophy’, which means, that whether you mix or match, products will not only physically integrate perfectly throughout the space, but deliver on the high-fidelity performance associated with the brand.
Associated electronics and streamers –tell us what you offer here.
MAG offers a range of amplifiers and streamers through its Monitor Audio and Roksan brands. The two are quite different. The first, through Monitor Audio are to support the Creator Series and outdoor speakers, the other, via Roksan are designed to support traditional two-channel applications.
As we have one team designing and engineering across all brands, the experience and learnings can be deployed across each product and brand – it’s a massive advantage – and the result are products that are extremely well considered.
There are differences between brands, within the Monitor Audio ‘Amplifiers 2G’ we offer significant options for system control integration, power-sharing and extensive configuration options – the industrial designs are more robust for installation. For Roksan,
the amplifiers and streamers are configured for high-fidelity usage, to be on show and allow seamless user experience through a more customer facing app we call MaestroUnite, which allows a huge variety of system configuration and personalisation but is very much focused on ‘stereo’ Hi-Fi.
Away from home cinema and trad Hi-Fi, tell us about some of the MAG’s key products.
The big news is Creator Series. They’re so significantly different to our previous architectural speakers, not only in terms of outright sonic performance but also in the way we’ve considered how they’re used. Before we had 49 individual SKUs in our line. Creator shrinks that to 19. Yet, we are still able to cover every application we covered before and, in some cases, innovate and offer more (T2-X within the Creator Series is a perfect example of this).
Our garden speaker systems continue to be popular and this year we welcome a third-generation design of our Climate Series speakers, which is a hugely anticipated and welcome update. The designs are fantastic and really represent what Monitor Audio is doing in the acoustic and design space.
Installers are increasingly specifying two channel systems, what can the group offer here?
Arguably, this is a specialty of the Group, as we have many options available from entry-level systems to almost ‘money can’t buy’ systems. Monitor Audio is famous for its clearly defined two-channel/ AV speaker series from Bronze, through to the flagship, Hyphn. Across the three brands there is significant diversity and, due to the approach we have as a Group, in the R&D of our products, integration, adaptability and total performance direction, sonic continuity is easily achievable inside and outside the home. It really comes down to what the end-customer’s budget might be, but rest assured we’ll absolutely have a two-channel system that can match the requirements.
What products/initiatives are you working on right now that will be available in the coming months?
We have five new launches coming this year across the three brands within the group. I’d probably say that all are important and significant to our business and are interesting to our partners’ businesses. They offer further innovative improvements and versatility to our growing portfolio of products – some new additions but also some evolutions and next generations! All are aimed at allowing us to improve where we’ve come from, and that’s not only in the products, but the levels of support we offer, which is why our commercial and service/support teams have all increased.
Explain your approach to designing a new product.
At MAG the R&D team utilise advanced simulation tools to allow total flexibility in the design process. Essentially, they allow design hypothesis directivity and enable us to simulate thousands of virtual changes to enable us to get far closer to the net result of what we want to achieve. Once we do this, we know that as soon as rapid prototyping starts, we aren’t miles away from where we need to be and it allows us to move forwards efficiently, having overcome any technology or design hurdles already.
The entire R&D team all work under one roof, within our newly created 6000 square foot, Creative Studio. This allows a constant dialogue to happen between acoustics, electronics, industrial and mechanical design. We also have the marketing department here, so from the start of the brief, the commercial inputs and consistent market feedback can be channelled into the process. It’s extremely efficient and is at the bedrock of our Transparent Design Philosophy.
What training/technical support is offered to installers?
We have a great technical service department who are available and manage day-to-day support for our partners. This has been working brilliantly, especially as we all know questions can come up on a job and answers are required quickly. A calendar of virtual training sessions is also being created and our commercial team, when out on the road, are taking time to train the trainers of our distribution partners and hopefully soon we can add to that with the development of our facilities, with the ultimate ambition of starting regular in-house training sessions.
Are there any special products/cultural crossovers you can talk about?
Right now, I must hold my cards close to my chest! We have a great CEDIA US Expo to look forward to, which will be the launchpad for a couple of our more significant launches, so watch this space.

CAN ZUMA BE A GAME-CHANGER FOR CUSTOM INSTALLERS?
Zuma, the pioneering speaker-light brand, has become a popular solution for homeowners seeking high-quality, smart home audio and illumination. But Zuma is so much more than just a great option for end users seeking a lifestyle lift from their lighting and listening.
Zuma can be a powerful addition to the product line of Custom Installers nationwide - either as an in-room system enhancement for large, whole home systems, or as a quick, dedicated install that delivers revenue in programme gaps on larger projects. Either way, Zuma delivers discreet, wireless sound and light your clients are sure to love.
In this article, we’ll dive into what makes Zuma unique in the marketplace, and discover how it can help open up new custom install audiences without compromising on quality.
WHAT IS ZUMA?
Zuma is a compact Hi-Fi-grade loudspeaker and an LED light, intelligently paired inside a single downlight unit in the ceiling. Installed in an array, Zuma bathes each room with immersive, spatial audio and intuitive, user-friendly lighting with a CRI of 90+ and hundreds of tunable warm to cool light settings. Zuma connects and operates wirelessly, minimising the visible footprint of your installations and saving space in your rack - whilst giving you a near invisible solution that delivers seriously high quality.
Zuma carries undeniably impressive design and engineering credentials. Its design team collaborated on leading products for Bowers & Wilkins and Bentley Motors’ in-car audio system, and was built by some of the engineering minds behind Vivid Audio, Naim Audio, Native, and more. Together, they have created one of the most compact and technologically groundbreaking Hi-Fi loudspeakers available on the market, paired alongside a premium LED light engine, and installed into the ceiling cavity for total design discretion. When multiple units are installed into the ceiling, the immersive audio experience created is unlike anything else
out there. Think of it like headphones for the room - the ‘sweet spot’ disappears, and in its place the whole space is bathed in immersive, spatial audio. In-room audio is elevated from a two speaker solution, to a whole network of connected speakers hidden away in the ceiling.
Zuma recently announced two new integrations that will serve to place it firmly on the radar of smart home specifiers nationwide. The first was with Rithum, introducing Zuma functionality into the popular smart switch’s wall-mounted control interface. The second was with leading lighting control specialists, Rako, opening up a whole world of compatibility through Rako’s comprehensive lighting system. Utilising either integration means Zuma can seamlessly sit alongside other household smart solutions like Philips Hue, Tado, BluOS, and more.
ZUMA & CUSTOM INSTALLS
Zuma is flexible enough to integrate into custom installation specifications of pretty much any size, scale and budget. For installers planning large-scale systems, Zuma has lighting drivers available for most major control systems (Control4, Crestron, Savant) and can offer effective support to many of the other electronics brands you may choose to employ. Zuma is a Roon Ready device, meaning it will work flawlessly alongside a broad range of high end Hi-Fi brands and audio components, all controlled via Roon’s popular music library and management system. As an AirPlay 2 speaker, Zuma can be paired with any other AirPlay 2 compatible speaker, including Sonos - these connectivity options mean Zuma can be utilised as part of a broad range of devices, potentially in rooms where conventional audio systems can be
found wanting. Zuma is particularly powerful in the kitchen and bathroom, where convenience and design discretion are important factors to consider. Bringing high quality audio to these two frequently-used home spaces often requires considerable budgets and design compromises - both of which are counteracted by Zuma’s discreet installation and comprehensive compatibility. Zuma allows installations to reach even further into the home than ever before.
OPENING UP NEW MARKETS
Zuma can also act as a great installation solution for customers with a more modest budget. With drastically reduced cabling, and no control racks or amplification required, Zuma allows custom installers to specify a premium-level sound and lighting system at a much more budget–conscious price point.
It means companies seeking new and more regular contracts can significantly expand their market reach and diversify their audience with a product that still delivers the level of quality their customers expect. And with Zuma’s wireless connection and straightforward installation process, contracts can be turned around at speed and at scale. Whether it’s just one room, or a multi-room, whole home sound and lighting system, Zuma is equipped to handle whatever is required.

JUNE 2024 39 COMPANY FOCUS: ZUMA essentialinstall.com /essential-install-mag @Install_mag /Essentialinstall
THE RESURGENCE OF RETROMODERN LOUDSPEAKERS
Anji Sosna, MD of Fyne Audio, examines the fusion of vintage aesthetics and cutting-edge technology.
In the ever-evolving world of home audio, a fascinating trend has emerged that marries the nostalgia of yesteryears with the technological advancements of today. The growing retro-modern movement in loudspeaker design is clearly captivating consumers who crave the charm of vintage aesthetics without compromising on the superior sound quality that modern technology offers. This trend is not only reshaping home decor but also creating lucrative opportunities for retailers and installers.
Retro-modern loudspeakers are characterised by their cabinet designs that harken back to the 1970s and 1980s. Head of Design at Fyne Audio, Dr Paul Mills, created our Vintage and Vintage Classic range aesthetic based on loudspeakers from his formative audio engineering years in the 1970s. He integrated these traditional cabinet styles with technology, materials, manufacturing and tuning know-how from our flagship F1 Series.
Designs like the Vintage and Vintage Classic, and models from the likes of Klipsch, JBL and Wharfedale to name a few brands in this retro-modern sector, feature elements such as wood veneers, fabric grilles and analogue style controls, reminiscent of the golden age of Hi-Fi. Despite their vintage appearance, these speakers are equipped with state-ofthe-art components, including high-resolution
audio capabilities, advanced drivers like Fyne’s patented IsoFlare and true audiophile enhancements like Deep Cryogenically Treating crossover electronics.
The resurgence of retro aesthetics is not limited to loudspeakers. It is part of a broader trend in home decor where mid-century modern and vintage styles are making a significant comeback. From furniture to lighting fixtures, the retro-modern look is becoming a staple in contemporary homes. This trend is driven by a desire for individuality and a move away from the minimalist designs that have dominated the market for the past decade.
Retro-modern loudspeakers are particularly appealing to consumers embracing this overall design trend. These consumers appreciate the warmth and character of retro design but also demand the impeccable sound quality that modern technology provides. It is a harmonious marriage of form and function that resonates with both audiophiles and interior design enthusiasts alike.
The growing popularity of retro-modern loudspeakers presents a significant opportunity for retailers and installers to expand their product offerings and cater to a burgeoning market segment. While black-on-black cinema installs are the core business for many installers, media rooms, smart home technology and whole house makeovers, create opportunities
to sell loudspeaker solutions that harmonise with the client’s decor choices as well as sound great.
For installers and retailers with showroom space, setting retro-modern loudspeakers in a living room context is sure to draw attention. It will help customers visualise how these products will fit into their own spaces and with a demo, highlight their dual role as both audiophile devices and decorative centrepieces in a room.
Offering expert consultations on integrating retro-modern loudspeakers into existing home audio systems can add value for customers. Installers can provide insights on optimal placement, acoustic considerations, and seamless integration with other modern technologies. An amplified high-res audio streamer/amplifier hidden away in the rack of a multiroom or cinema install offers all the functionality of modern audio, while retro modern loudspeakers deliver premium sound and classic 1970s style chic in the room.
We have found that emphasising the story behind the retro-modern movement in your marketing materials can resonate with consumers on an emotional level. Highlight the craftsmanship, design philosophy and nostalgic appeal of these products to create a compelling narrative.
Dr Paul’s journey in the Hi-Fi industry is well documented in our Vintage and Classic marketing materials. As a pinnacle of his desire to merge the look from speakers of his youth with cutting-edge performance, every speaker in our recently previewed (at Munich High End in May) Vintage Classic Gold SP range carries his signature on the front. It humanises the design concept, underpins Dr Paul’s passion and involvement with every model and allows Classic Gold SP models to become objects of desire to simply own.
The retro-modern movement in loudspeaker design is more than just a passing fad; it reflects a broader shift towards incorporating vintage aesthetics into modern living spaces. For retailers and installers, this trend offers a unique opportunity to differentiate their offerings and tap into a market that values both style and substance. By embracing the retro-modern movement, businesses can attract a diverse clientele and drive growth in an increasingly competitive landscape.

A GOLDEN AGE FOR AUDIO
We’re in a golden age for home cinema, media room and audio everywhere technology in the home, argues Kyle Basley, Area Sales Manager – UK South at Snap One.
CEDIA’s 2023 Professional Smart Home Market Analysis1 highlighted not just the volume of business currently being carried out in these areas, but also pointed to very favourable times ahead.
The survey valued the UK industry at £2.9 billion, with home cinema and whole-home audio system projects each representing an estimated £314 million, and media rooms accounting for a healthy £234 million of this total value. The analysis anticipated growth of 36% in both home cinema and media room categories in the year ahead and predicted an 18% increase for whole-home audio systems.
High-quality, streamed content is a key factor in this growth. Streaming and digital services increased sales by more than £800 million in 2023, according to the Digital Entertainment and Retail Association2 (ERA). The fastest growing sector in 2023 was video, up 10% to £4.9 billion, driven by subscription services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. Meanwhile, music sales were up 9.6% to £2.2 billion, the highest since 2002, as streaming services from Spotify, Amazon, YouTube and Apple increased subscription revenues by 9.8% to £1.8 billion.
Clearly, consumers are investing in their audio systems so that they can maximise their enjoyment of streaming services in their cinema or media room or relax to music throughout the home. At Snap One, we’re also seeing the dedicated cinema and media room taking priority as the first part of a technology installation before clients move
on to the rest of their home. Entertainment is driving our industry.
As a top five industry brand in each category, the Triad brand from Snap One offers a complete range of high-quality, architectural solutions that can meet the performance, budget and aesthetic requirements of all these applications.
The latest Triad PDX Series of architectural speakers provide the premium audio performance that Triad is known for with a simplified installation experience made possible by Push Lock by Swarm technology. Triad is also a brand that’s aligned with Dolby and has been for many, many years; and through this collaboration Triad is well placed to help Partners deliver a Dolby Atmos cinema.
To make installation a breeze for Partners, Triad PDX uses Push Lock, an exclusive toolless mounting solution. Since the speaker is secured with the simple press of a button for fast and secure installation, this proprietary technology allows for a quick and easy fit in any home. The series also includes helpful accessories like construction brackets that offer flexibility during a new build or install process, rear enclosures for all models that can control air volume and sound propagation to adjacent rooms, and replacement grilles for all models that can be painted and custom-ordered to match the project aesthetics.
These are exciting times in the world of professionally installed audio. Home entertainment continues to thrive as a sector and listening experiences are becoming more immersive, more richly detailed and more authentic than ever before. Right now, talking to clients about the possibilities available to them for capturing the best quality and performance in home cinemas, media rooms or throughout their home, is likely to be one of the most rewarding conversations Partners can have.

PRIVATE PARTY SPACES –THE ULTIMATE FREEDOM
The party room is an exciting opportunity for integrators to push the boundaries of the immersive audio experience. Nick Fichte, Business Development Director, L-Acoustics Home & Yacht, looks at the trend and the technology that can create these special spaces for clients.
For those with the means, creating a personal party space is a choice that grants the ultimate freedom: freedom from the ever-alert paparazzi, ever-present social media and the general public. What’s more, a private party space also grants the freedom to create the perfect ambience that brings personal happiness.
The creativity of our clients to create that perfect ambience is something that never fails to impress. An endless diversity of previously unused spaces - think barns, lofts, garages, basements, pool houses, and more - are receiving a new lease of life as imaginative clients transform them into intimate, dynamic gathering spaces that boast the absolute best that AV technology has to offer. These are spaces that attain the same level of audio performance you’d find in public nightclubs, bars and restaurants. And often, do it even better!
Already, L-Acoustics has provided incredible party room solutions for diverse projects across the US, Switzerland and the UK. These include a remarkable CEDIA Award-winning project from UK integrator Homeplay who transformed a traditional Cotswolds farmhouse into a nightclub-ready, state-of-the-art media room, with a golf simulator that doubles as a cinema, a DJ station, and a poolside immersive sound space.
Integrators call on us because we know how to create great audio solutions for nightclubs and other luxury hospitality environments. The
world’s top-rated nightclubs use L-Acoustics sound systems because they know that’s what the world’s top DJs want. It’s on their technical riders! Take venues such as Hï Ibiza, for example, which has held the top spot in DJ Mag’s prestigious 100 Best Clubs Poll for two consecutive years. Hï Ibiza is a 360o nightlife experience, featuring the world’s best DJs, incredible production, and, of course, an L-Acoustics sound system.
Our audio solution there is built on our K2 system, with additional out-fills and in-fills as well as Kara and X Series delays. The high output, sub-heavy main system provides the DJs with the tools they need to bring high energy music to the enthusiastic Ibiza crowd. Every bass note, snare drum, and high hat is delivered to the audience, in time and with the impact and definition expected of the best club in the world. One of my favourite parts of that sound system though is the L-Acoustics Syva speakers which are used around the DJ booth and in the VIP area. Both these areas can only be accessed by VIPs. We often put Syva or its newer counterpart Soka in residential projects and end-users love the fact they have exactly the same speakers in their home as can be found in the world’s most elite spaces.
It’s just a step further for integrators to work with us to create that top club feeling in your clients’ own home. We can support you in giving them the opportunity to be the DJ
they’ve always wanted to be or to bring a favourite DJ or band into their home for an unforgettable occasion.
But we don’t stop there, with solutions that use the L-ISA spatial audio platform from L-Acoustics, you can have a space that goes from club to home cinema to personal listening space without missing a beat.
With a 40-year reputation in professional sound, L-Acoustics is renowned for its natural, powerful, and realistic sound reproduction, all backed by its sophisticated design software. Thanks to the development of the dedicated Home & Yacht team at L-Acoustics, Integrators working in the luxury residential and marine sectors can access not only the L-Acoustics product range, but also Soundvision, our proprietary 3D modelling software and our calibration services at the heart of delivering these amazing, immersive environments. These tools allow integrators to design audio for spaces with scientific precision, in line with CEDIA’s Recommended Practice RP22 for home cinema applications.
Whatever the client needs, L-Acoustics can meet them. So, why not schedule a listening session at our newly refurbished Sound Space in Highgate, North London? Just be ready for you and your clients to fall in love with music like never before.

INTEGRATED V FLOOR-STANDING
Des Ford, Technical Marketing Manager at DbM, assesses the pros and cons.
In an industry where there are high-performing integrated speakers and statement floorstanding speakers, it’s important to understand the key factors that customers should be thinking about when they are trying to decide between the two options.
Aesthetics can easily override any potential differences in performance between the two approaches. Some customers want to revel in the appearance of their loudspeakers and they are keen to give them pride of place. The loudspeakers might be seen as high-quality pieces of furniture and are considered to be ornamental or even sculptural assets to the room. Other customers (and many interior designers!) abhor the idea of floorstanding loudspeakers, equating them to necessary appliances or equipment which should be kept out of sight. To borrow from Le Corbusier, they are simply just part of the “machine for living in”.
Naturally, the potential disruption associated with the installation of in-wall loudspeakers can be a showstopper. A room which is being built or refurbished lends itself to having loudspeakers built into the walls or ceiling far more easily than a beautifully decorated and finished space.
There are sometimes occasions when a customer is happy to consider either type of loudspeaker. In these cases, the performance can be compared. Some customers won’t even be considering in-walls, believing the level of performance they are after is available only from floorstanders. However, we’ve seen cases where such customers have performed a complete volte-face once they’ve heard a system using the very best in-wall offerings.
INTEGRATED SPEAKERS –PROS AND CONS
Integrated loudspeakers keep floors clear and therefore increase flexibility for the position of other items in the room, such as furniture and ornaments. When the loudspeakers are integrated seamlessly into the control structure of the home, everyone in the household can
benefit from their performance without having to ‘switch on the Hi-Fi’. Some users really like the effect of being immersed in sound without the obvious presence of large floorstanders; they report that it’s easier to disassociate what they are hearing from the kit that is producing it – always the aim for a good loudspeaker design.
The biggest issue can be the need to build integrated loudspeakers into the fabric of the house. Then, once installed, integrated loudspeakers are not easy to move! A decision that a TV would be better if it were on a different wall is complicated by the fact that the loudspeakers are likely to need re-installing.
FLOORSTANDING SPEAKERS –PROS AND CONS
It’s usually possible to fine-tune the positioning of floorstanding loudspeakers. This allows experimentation with spacing and toe-in to elicit the best possible sonic image at the listening position. Floorstanders can be moved
ESSENTIAL SPEAKERS 46 JUNE 2024 /Essentialinstall @Install_mag /essential-install-mag essentialinstall.com
within a room, or into another room should the need arise. Moving the loudspeakers may mean some work to relocate their connecting cables, but this is usually less onerous than cutting new holes into walls or ceilings.
However, floorstanders may be non-starters due to the notinconsiderable issue of personal taste in regard to aesthetics; some customers just don’t want to see the loudspeakers. This is particularly understandable for rooms with period décor. There is an old joke about a ‘Chippendale video cabinet’; well, have you ever seen a three-way bassreflex monitor in a regency style?! Another issue in some applications is that floorstanders are, well, on the floor! If the requirement is for sound to be produced at anything like head-height or above, almost all floorstanders literally fall short. Such use-cases can include the surround speakers in a cinema system, not to mention (obviously) any height channels. Similarly, in rooms where the seating or other furniture blocks the passage of sound to the listeners’ ears, integrated loudspeakers offer the option of getting the sound up into the air.

The eternal question, integrated or on-show?
LOUDSPEAKERS FOR US, BY US
Siya Fakher, MD of Broadtek, technology business consultants, intros an interesting direct approach to speaker design and delivery – direct to the end user.
Disassemble a pair of £20,000 studio monitors (don’t try this at home!) and tot up the cost of all the components and you will be lucky if they add up to £1,500 apiece, which means the designer has been obliged to make some pretty frugal component choices. Cyber-stalk the manufacturers of those same speakers on Google Maps and you are unlikely to mistake their carpark for a Maserati showroom, so aside from overheads, where did the rest of your £20k go? This is where traditional distribution channels are showing both their age and limitations. In the well-worn AV sales model, the distributor expects to pocket 50% for selling the goods to a reseller who in turn will seldom get out of bed for less than 30%. This model dates from a time when there were huge language and cultural barriers to overseas trade and when products were bought in bricks and mortar stores staffed by product specialists. These barriers crumbled long ago and the retail outlets are probably tanning salons, but the margins have remained stubbornly high. Now I am not looking to deny the sales chain and there are certainly value-added distributors which invest heavily in training, stock and support. Nonetheless, I am excited by the prospect of better, cheaper products, if we can only slip past
the gatekeepers and connect the brands with the people who love them.
I recently got a glimpse of the future (or a possible future at least) when I drove over to Essex to meet James and Mark from PresentDayProduction. I went to find out if their MUM 8 studio monitors lived up to all the online hype around them. What I came away with was a head full of questions about how our industry organises itself. Like many audio professionals, company founders James and Mark found themselves with time on their hands in 2020 and began sharing their expertise, musings and a fair dollop of humour through their PresentDayProduction YouTube channel. Some 260 videos and nearly 50,000 subscribers later, it would be fair to call the duo major influencers in our little AV world. Mark is a sought-after mastering engineer and in tandem with his YouTube journey he became a devout Dolby Atmos convert. As he began calculating what he would need to upgrade his mastering studio to the 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos standard, Mark found that the studio monitor speakers he really wanted would set him back a cool £120,000. Undeterred, James and Mark gamely decided to make their own, allowing them to hand-pick premium components and kicking off a year
long process of trial, error and learning-by-doing that eventually led to the creation of the MUM 8 speaker. Initially only made for their personal use, friends and clients began to ask where they could get their hands-on these new monitors, so what began as a passion project morphed into a fledgling manufacturing business, with the YouTube channel providing an invaluable hotline to potential customers. Rather than seeking traditional distributors to take on the brand, PresentDayProduction adopted a direct sales model, supplying, supporting, and befriending customers in 23 countries. For the customers this means they are getting an upgradeable product chock full of top-quality components which would be prohibitively pricey if it had passed through the normal distribution maths. Definitely worth a close listen if you are kitting out a top end Dolby Atmos home cinema. Is this approach infinitely scalable? Well, there may come a point where the chaps will not have the bandwidth to deliver and install all speakers sold in the UK in person, but for now at least they are growing nicely in a self-sustaining ecosystem that sits entirely outside the mainstream distribution model.
I am curious to see whether the PresentDayProduction model proves to be an outlier or a taste of further ‘for us, by us’ approaches to come in our industry. We have already witnessed a number of attempts to short-circuit normal channels by using crowdfunding campaigns to connect creators direct with consumers. The results have been mixed at best, but there have been notable success stories, including the Transparent premium home audio brand (also popular in the hospitality market) which was brought to life more than a decade ago by crowdfunding backers who believed in its circular economy ethos and super-minimal designs, allowing its founders to build a business with outlets in fifteen countries worldwide.
Should today’s market leading speaker brands be keeping a watchful eye on the DIYer start-ups in their rear-view mirrors? Maybe not, but forging new pathways to bring passionate creators together with equally passionate consumers can surely spice up our industry and create space for pioneering products that would never see the light of day under conventional business approaches and margin structures.

SOUND, AESTHETICS AND FUNCTIONALITY
Charlie Porritt, CEO at Russound, explores the evolution of loudspeaker technology.
Improvements in materials science, DSP, and acoustic engineering have revolutionised the capabilities of modern loudspeakers. Today, they benefit from innovative materials that enhance their performance. For instance, the use of lightweight yet rigid materials such as Kevlar and carbon fibre in driver construction allows for more accurate sound reproduction with less distortion. Additionally, advancements in enclosure design, such as the use of composite materials and sophisticated damping techniques, have significantly reduced unwanted resonances and coloration, resulting in clearer and more natural sound.
DSP technology allows for precise control over various aspects of sound reproduction, including equalisation, crossover settings and room correction. This enables loudspeakers to deliver consistent performance regardless of the listening environment. DSP can also be used to create virtual sound environments, enhancing the immersive experience by simulating different acoustic spaces or adding spatial effects.
Ultimately, the goal of modern loudspeakers is to create an immersive audio experience that transports the listener into the heart of the performance. This is achieved through advancements in various aspects, including high-resolution audio, surround sound and spatial audio:
1. High-Resolution Audio: With the advent of high-resolution audio formats, loudspeakers are now capable of reproducing sound with greater detail and clarity. To fully capture the nuances of the recording, high-resolution audio requires loudspeakers with extended frequency response and low distortion. This results in a more lifelike and engaging listening experience.
2. Surround Sound and Object-Based Audio: The development of surround sound technologies has redefined the concept of immersive audio. These object-based audio formats allow for sound to be placed and moved in three-dimensional space, creating a more enveloping and realistic soundstage.
Loudspeakers designed for these formats often include additional drivers or modules to reproduce overhead and ambient sounds, enhancing the sense of immersion.
3. Spatial Audio and 3D Sound: Spatial audio takes immersive sound to the next level by simulating the way humans perceive sound in the real world. Using advanced algorithms and binaural techniques, spatial audio creates a three-dimensional audio environment that can be experienced through loudspeakers or headphones. This technology is particularly impactful in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications.
DESIGN AND AESTHETIC CONSIDERATIONS
Today, loudspeaker design is no longer solely about functionality. Aesthetics and integration have likewise become crucial elements. As loudspeakers increasingly become integral parts of interior design, manufacturers are paying more attention to their visual appeal and how they fit into various spaces.
Modern loudspeakers are designed to be visually pleasing while maintaining high performance. Sleek, minimalist designs and a variety of finishes allow them to blend seamlessly with contemporary interiors. Some manufacturers offer customisable options, enabling consumers to choose colours, materials and finishes.
Architectural loudspeakers provide high-quality sound without compromising aesthetics. These speakers are designed to be unobtrusive, often featuring paintable grilles and slim profiles that allow them to disappear into the surroundings.
The seamlessness of where and how a loudspeaker is installed adds to its aesthetic integration. For instance, installers can ensure great sound quality by mounting a soundbar to the wall, but they need to get it perfectly centered with the TV, which can be a challenging process. Products like Russound’s soon to be released Cinema Bar 3.0 (pictured above), the company’s first-ever soundbar, feature
slide-adjustable wall brackets that secure the soundbar to the wall while allowing installers to make quick changes and effortlessly centre it under the display. The satin black soundbar also ensures high-quality sound without the need for a dedicated subwoofer — furthering the trend for elegant, unobtrusive integration of audio setups within modern interior design.
WIRELESS INTEGRATION AND THE FUTURE OF LOUDSPEAKERS
As part of a connected home, loudspeakers are no longer standalone devices but components of an integrated system that enhances the user experience. Primarily, the integration of wireless technology and smart features has further expanded the role of loudspeakers. Wireless connectivity allows for more flexible placement options and easier integration. As a result, the integration of loudspeakers into broader audio and smart home ecosystems has become a key trend.
Multiroom audio systems require robust wireless connectivity and compatibility with various streaming protocols and services. This connectivity allows loudspeakers to communicate seamlessly with each other and with control devices, such as smartphones and tablets.
Smart loudspeakers, equipped with voice assistants and AI capabilities, can adapt to user preferences and room acoustics, providing a personalised listening experience. The integration of AI in loudspeakers is expected to become more sophisticated, enabling more personalised and intuitive audio experiences.
As sustainability becomes a growing concern, the audio industry is also focusing on eco-friendly design and manufacturing processes. This includes using recyclable materials, reducing energy consumption, and creating products with longer lifespans.
The future of loudspeakers lies in their ability to adapt to changing technologies and consumer preferences, creating a harmonious blend of sound, aesthetic and functionality that elevates the listening experience to new heights.

THE EXPECTATIONS THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’
Phil Pini, Director Residential Sales for Crestron, argues that demands on the humble in-home speaker has significantly altered.
From horns to dynamic speakers, from phonographs to iPods, loudspeakers and sound carriers have changed radically over the course of more than a century — and so has our consumption of audio and our expectations of the quality and ease of use. We all love to surround ourselves in music and if we could, we’d do it all the time. This is why we turn to multi-room audio distribution and high-quality speakers for accessible, immersive and engaging audio at home.
For the perfect loudspeaker installation, there are rules of thumb. For instance: How many loudspeakers does one need — and where does one put them? Even though it may seem counterintuitive, the more speakers you have, the lower you can keep the volume because the space is blanketed by audio more uniformly. Let’s take a large open space as an example, such as a kitchen. You want to target no more than six feet from one speaker to the next for an optimally performing distributed audio configuration. For media rooms — especially ones where movies are the primary content — we recommend a 5.1 configuration at a minimum. That’s three speakers in the front, serving as the left, centre (or ‘dialogue’), and right channels, and then two surround speakers, the ‘4 and 5’ in this mix). Then the ‘1’ would be the subwoofer that can be placed in a discreet location. Ideally, you want the surround channels slightly above the listening position
so they can create the optimal ambient immersive audio.
There’s also a general rule about what type of speaker to choose. In locations where wall space is very limited, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways, in-ceiling speakers are the best option. However, if the space is a dining nook, study, or location where the occupants are in a relatively fixed position, in-wall speakers are terrific.
But speakers cannot stand on their own. Our customers are using streaming services for their video and for their audio. As a result, the expectations are changing — which is why we invested heavily in our DigitalMedia range, which includes DM NVX — our AV-over-IP solution — and DM NAX, our highly scalable audio-overIP distribution platform. DM NAX is a native Crestron Home audio distribution system that also seamlessly integrates with custom Crestron home automation systems and Crestron residential speakers. That means that one amplifier can cover all sources: voice services, DM NVX AV-over-IP, traditional audio sources such as TVs and CDs, and streaming services.
To make it even easier to benefit from these sound systems — especially for Android OS users who don’t have the benefit of solutions such as AirPlay software — we recently launched a wall plate with Bluetooth connectivity and unbalanced analogue audio input and output. Simply put, it supports any audio source to bridge to DM NAX technology. Bluetooth connectivity
is a fantastic option to source audio to this wall plate. That’s just one of our four new audio edge devices — devices at the boundary of a network, acting as an entry point for data that are part of our DM NAX audio-over-IP range.
Other devices include a converter with Balanced Analogue Audio Input and Output which is perfect for connecting legacy devices into a modern, flexible ecosystem such as CD players, cassette decks and turntables. A converter with USB connectivity and the same input and output tech is a great way to bring PC or mobile device audio onto a DM NAX technology network and a Wall Plate with XLR Input and Balanced Analogue Audio Output can easily connect pro audio, high-end components, karaoke and DJ gear. (Although, in my case, I’m pretty sure that my family will beg me to use my headphones for karaoke instead of the speakers.)
No matter the source — and no matter how easy a system is to use — audio is only as good as the devices handling the amplification, processing and delivery of a signal to the human ear. That’s what sets end-to-end solutions like those Crestron offers apart: There’s a quality component at every stage in the chain, and each of those components — from preamp with DSP to power amp to loudspeakers — has been designed for optimum performance when they’re working together.

THE BUSINESS OF AUDIO
Stephen Rhead, Sonos Professional Manager UK & Ireland, explores how the humble loudspeaker could be the key to unlocking new business growth areas in light commercial environments.
Great audio is essential for creating the desired feel and atmosphere of a space. It’s a key part of our sensory experience, whether that’s attending a dinner party at someone’s home, working out at the gym, drinking coffee at a new café or popping into our local salon for a haircut. The associated soundtrack of each environment has a direct impact on how we connect with it on an emotional, often-subconscious level.
In a business environment audio is key for captivating our audience, creating memorable experiences and boosting brand recognition.
At Sonos, for example, we carefully curate brand soundtracks for every new product demo and event and ensure this is consistent around the world. It’s a reflection of how we want people to feel about our brand, the lifestyle it reflects and how we want to be perceived.
Put simply, audio is essential for shaping the personality of every business environment.
In the professional install market, there is now a significant crossover between residential and light commercial environments. We’re seeing Sonos speakers, particularly Era 100, increasingly appearing in premises such as
hairdressers, restaurants, beauty salons, retail shops, reception areas and cafes.
There are several reasons for this. In many cases, the crossover into commercial premises is down to business owners wanting the same system as they have at home, and based on this user experience they want to see these products brought into their business and installed by a professional. If it’s easy to operate, looks great and integrates easily – it’s a winning solution.
This is where a fantastic opportunity lies for residential installers who want to explore new territories. There is a growing number of hybrid installers that we are talking to - installers that work in both residential and commercial environments. In fact, you probably already have a wide network of clients that have an installed audio solution at home and also own business premises.
The potential is huge. An audio installation can open the doors to automation, lighting control, security, surge protection, remote monitoring, and so much more.
But is it as simple as going from one sector to another? It’s not a straight-forward copy a paste situation as a business has different
requirements from an audio solution to that of a homeowner. For instance, there may be multiple users operating the system during one shift or different audio zones required across one workspace such as a reception area, main lobby, toilets, bar area. And of course, a business requires a reliable network connection for its speaker system.
As the hybrid installer model grows, Sonos is recognising the need to tailor speakers and products so that professional installers can take advantage of these opportunities in the light commercial sector. For example, by incorporating features specifically designed for this market, which help with flexibility on site and ease of installation, whilst still delivering on signature audio performance and ease of use for end clients.
While we already have the skills available to capitalise on this fresh new market opportunity, the products too must be fit for business - this is going to be an exciting space to watch over next 12 months.
I think we’re about to see just how powerful the loudspeaker can be at unlocking the potential of this exciting new opportunity.

HOW TO REACH VANHALLA!
Tim Alcock, Head of OnLine at LeaseCar.UK, explains what to look for when choosing a van that is right for each business.
Choosing a new van for your business can feel overwhelming. It is a big investment and you want to make sure you are making the right choice. Contractors need to make sure they buy a van which is both comfortable and appropriate for their needs. It must have enough storage to accommodate all equipment and tools. There are a few factors to take into consideration when shopping for a new van, including racking requirements, weight allowance and electric VS petrol.
RACKING REQUIREMENTS FOR CARRYING/ PROTECTING TOOLS
A super important thing to remember when buying a commercial van is how practical it is going to be. Think about how you are going to need to use the vehicle in order to make an informed decision about what is best for you.
Some commercial vehicles can be fitted with racking systems, and some can even be converted for your unique requirements. If you require constant use of the same tools and lots of efficient space to make transporting equipment easier, this might be the best option for you.
CONSIDER ELECTRIC VS PETROL
The ban on petrol and diesel cars is approaching, so many contractors looking to invest in a new work vehicle may be considering whether to go electric. Although an electric van will cost you more money upfront, they may provide long-term savings. Saving on fuel, tax and maintenance could make an electric vehicle the best investment for you.
There are benefits either way - whether you go with a petrol or electric vehicle for work. Electric vans have fewer moving parts compared to petrol and diesel engines, making them cheaper to maintain. They tend to be more comfortable over a long journey and charging costs can be considerably cheaper than refuelling, so more beneficial for short distances due to range. However, you will need to check ahead of time to plan out charging options or install a home charger.
AVOID OVERLOADING
Workers should always consider the appropriate size when buying a commercial vehicle. Make
sure the van you purchase has enough capacity for all of your equipment and additional needs. Under action 41b of the Road Traffic Act 1998, it’s a serious offence to drive an overloaded vehicle which exceeds weight restrictions and requirements.
Those found to be breaking this law could land fines of up to £300 and receive penalty points on their licence, depending on the amount overloaded. Buying an appropriately sized van and spreading loads evenly can help to keep the vehicle steady, making sure nothing can slide too far out of position and using safety equipment like rope hooks to keep goods tightly secure.
Before setting off on the road, we strongly encourage all van owners to double-check that items are securely fastened into position and to invest in rope hooks for extra reassurance.
If you do find yourself on the road with a shifting load, first check your mirrors and begin to slow down. Then when it’s safe to do so, pull over into a suitable area where you can readjust the equipment and tightly secure it to prevent any moving loads.
All van drivers must take extra care and precautionary measures to ensure they aren’t breaking the law, prevent causing harm to other road users, and to avoid serious penalty charges
LEASING A VAN
It’s essential to select the right van for your business use, needs, budget and expectations. In this era of fast-moving technology, making a big purchasing decision on a commercial vehicle can feel daunting. That’s why we would suggest leasing.
Leasing a van for your business needs brings a huge host of added benefits. Not only will you be able to drive a brand-new van, ensuring a more economical and safe vehicle, but you will save on maintenance costs.
Once the lease is over, you hand the vehicle back with no strings attached and are free to find another (potentially better!) lease deal. You can make a truly informed decision for your business needs.
If you are leasing a vehicle exclusively for commercial use, it is possible to claim up to 50% of the VAT back on the vehicle and up to 100% of the VAT back for any maintenance packages you add to your lease. We recommend speaking to your accountant to find the best way to do this.

FOUR WHEEL FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Laura Batten of LB Designs, a creative operating in the AV and smart home sector helping businessess with their communications, marketing and design needs, offers some thoughts on making the right impression with your vehicle choices.
Whether you have one vehicle or a large fleet, as a business you need think about what that vehicle looks like. I don’t mean whether it’s a high-end brand or got all the body kit, I’m talking about branding and vehicle graphics. The vehicles within your business are like a billboard, promoting your company wherever it goes.
Getting your vehicles branded is especially important for ones that go to sites; these can be your biggest advertisements. Not only will your team look more professional turning up to your clients’ sites but the vehicles are there promoting your services and keeping your brand in the mind of potential customers. But why not have branding on sales reps’ cars?
The graphics don’t have to be huge – being subtle can also work
Think of the vehicles, especially ones that are used by engineers and installers that go out on site regularly, as a giant brand awareness exercise. Being on brand in all aspects of your business is really important and after the initial cost of getting the graphics done, the vehicles do the work for you, always promoting you without you doing anything extra.
SO WHAT AM I SUGGESTING YOU HAVE ON YOUR VEHICLES?
On vehicles that regularly go to sites, these should be impactful, full colour and should say what you do in a quick and simple way. Make sure you include:
• Your company logo on all sides of the vehicle –bonnet, sides and rear.
• Contact details – website and phone number are enough.
• Company tag line.
• Impactful graphics that will catch peoples’ eye. You need to be careful here that you don’t over power the important information.
For vehicles of employees who are maybe in sales, to keep them on brand you can just think about including the company logo on the front doors and tailgate. These could be really subtle, like a matte logo of a similar colour to the vehicle. These won’t stand out but will look really professional.
With there being lots of businesses around the country who are in the same line of work as you, marketing, branding and impactful design
are things that need to be looked at regularly to ensure you are one step ahead of your competition. Design and marketing doesn’t stop at printed media or social media, there are so many other ways you can promote your business. High quality, eye-catching vehicle graphics can be costly, especially if you have a fleet of vehicles, but as I previously explained once that initial cost has been spent you have a mobile advert, spreading your company message far and wide. However, vehicle graphics don’t have to be expensive. For a full wrap you’re going to be paying top dollar, but there are other options such as half-wraps, in-fill panels and simple cut-vinyl graphics. There can be an option for every budget.
Sure, you can have a plain white van and still carry out your work as normal, but is a ‘whitevan’ pulling up outside your client’s site going to shout about who you are and make you look professional and a set up from your competitors as much as a sign written vehicle? Probably not, but you can still do the work you set out to do without a problem. Just think about your brand image from logo to uniform, messaging to website, social media to vehicle graphics.

WIFI 7 ENHANCEMENTS OFFER SMART HOME OPPORTUNITIES FOR INSTALLERS
Gary
Newson, EMEA Sales Director at
A 2023 survey found soaring adoption rates across smart home categories. 70% of respondents now own a smart TV (up from 65% in 2022), while ownership of video doorbells and external security cameras jumped from 14% to 18%. Smart burglar alarms rose from 5% to 7% and even connected exercise equipment saw an uptick from 3% to 4%
However, as more and more bandwidthhungry gadgets and applications come online, the limitations of current Wi-Fi setups are being severely tested. Existing wireless networks are becoming congested and struggling to reliably support activities, particularly demanding services like 4K streaming, video conferences and gaming - especially when multiple devices are in use simultaneously.
Fortunately, a solution is on the horizon in the form of Wi-Fi 7 - the next generation wireless standard which promises powerful upgrades in speed, capacity and reliability.
CERTIFIED FOR RELEASE
The Wi-Fi Alliance officially launched its certification program for Wi-Fi 7 devices in January 2024. This is clearing the path for manufacturers to bring Wi-Fi 7 products to market this year.
So what enhancements can we expect from the new Wi-Fi 7 standard? For starters, it will deliver a blistering 4x increase in throughput speeds compared to Wi-Fi 6E. It also doubles available bandwidth by supporting ultra-wide 320MHz channels.
NETGEAR, offers his thoughts on next gen networking.
One of Wi-Fi 7’s most impressive capabilities is its ability to simultaneously connect multiple devices operating at their peak performance - even when families are streaming entertainment, working remotely, virtual learning and gaming simultaneously.
INSTALLERS CAN HELP UPGRADING HOMES FOR THE FUTURE
The Wi-Fi Alliance predicts over 233 million Wi-Fi 7 devices will be introduced globally in 2024 alone, eventually growing to a staggering 2.1 billion by 2028 as adoption ramps up.
With 8K streaming, extended reality (XR) and holographic video solutions being launched, Wi-Fi 7 will enable a new generation of immersive, ultra-high bandwidth experiences to become part of the home entertainment landscape.
To take full advantage of these multigigabit wireless speeds, throughput and connectivity, consumers will need to upgrade more than just their client devices. Optimising whole-home Wi-Fi coverage is imperative and specialist advice is needed, particularly when it comes to the installation of modern mesh systems. The NETGEAR survey found that 31% of respondents said it was likely they would buy or upgrade to a mesh Wi-Fi home solution if it could provide Wi-Fi coverage across their entire home and provide security to all smart devices.
RIDING THE MESH WIFI WAVE
Using multiple interconnected nodes, mesh Wi-Fi blankets entire properties in a seamless cloud of high-performance wireless connectivity - eliminating dead zones with the capacity of expanding the coverage on demand simply by adding another note. The latest quadband 6GHz mesh systems provide the solid foundation required to help homeowners realise their smart home ambitions.
By specifying cutting-edge mesh Wi-Fi solutions during smart home installations, integrators can futureproof their clients’ networks. This ensures a reliable, low-latency wireless infrastructure capable of handling not just today’s smart home devices, but inevitable ultra-bandwidth services that will shortly come onto the market.
What’s more, selected mesh Wi-Fi offerings integrate advanced cyber security. As the number of connected smart home devices multiplies, this helps prevent unauthorised access while protecting private data from threats.
With Wi-Fi 7’s groundbreaking capabilities removing the shackles of network congestion, residential integrators have a prime opportunity to elevate their service offerings. By designing, deploying and supporting premium whole-home Wi-Fi 7 mesh installations, they can deliver truly smart, seamless connectivity experiences that maximise clients’ technology investments.

BESPOKE HOME CINEMAS AND D b M TURN UNUSED GARAGE INTO A FAMILY CINEMA ROOM
Bespoke Home Cinemas and DbM once again partnered to work on a project that saw the team utilise Meridian and Trinnov to turn an unused garage into a six-seater cinema room.
As a longstanding Bespoke Home Cinemas client, this was the second cinema room that the integrator was going to build for them. The team originally created a retractable ‘stealth’ cinema in the lounge of the client’s previous home, as it was always his dream to have a dedicated cinema as a personal retreat from his stressful job.
Now, eight years later, the client wanted a cinema installed into his new six-bedroom family home in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Bespoke Home Cinemas had recently designed a stateof-the-art demonstration space, which features products from the DbM portfolio, including Meridian and Trinnov.
“When looking to create a new cinema demonstration space, we researched many brands,” explains Gifford Malcolm, Director at Bespoke Homes Cinemas. “Meridian has always been a brand we’ve followed and admired from afar. We were provided with several in-depth demonstrations at their UK showroom and a factory tour, which turned our heads. The dedicated demonstration spaces, listening rooms and the impressive technology built on-site, along with what goes on behind
the scenes in the factory, contributed to our decision to choose this brand. The dedicated team looked after us from the early design discussions to selecting the right products to demonstrate, making us feel we were in good hands. It was without question that Meridian was going to be our top choice.”
With this new showroom in place, the integrator invited the client to experience the cinema room. Having enjoyed the demo, their
minds were made up and he said, ‘I’ll take everything you have in here!’
Bespoke Home Cinemas was shown the space in the family home, which turned out to be a triple garage, with a structural dividing wall that couldn’t be removed. However, the team was able to utilise the entire space by building the cinema within the double garage area and adding a separate home office in the single garage area.
ESSENTIAL DbM 62 JUNE 2024 /Essentialinstall @Install_mag /essential-install-mag essentialinstall.com
The whole area was stripped back and the sloping floor was built up with a screed and floating insulated floor. Bespoke Home Cinemas then studded out the entire area to conceal existing services and filled all walls with ROCKWOOL RW3 and double dB boarding for sound insulation.
The client only wanted one row of seats so that the audio was focussed on this row. He wanted the room to be designed to specifically achieve accurate audio clarity without ‘chasing the numbers’ on channel count.
Having selected the products from the Bespoke Home Cinemas showroom, it meant that the cinema was a 5.2.2 set-up. It features three Meridian DSP750 in-wall loudspeakers for the left, centre and right channels, two Meridian DSP520.2 in-wall loudspeakers for the surround channels, and two Meridian DSP320.2 in-ceiling loudspeakers to provide the Atmos height channels. The room also included two Meridian DSW600 subwoofers.
“DSP loudspeakers have multiple benefits from massively enhanced audio fidelity, amazing dynamics even at lower volumes and also in hugely reduced rack space,” adds Gifford. “From a fidelity perspective, the DSP750 loudspeakers are hugely efficient. They deliver massive power at 500W per speaker and have infinite control over each drive unit as they have a dedicated power amp for each driver built into the speaker housing. This gives the client an exciting, dynamic, detailed and lifelike experience with zero fatigue and amazing immersion. It allows us to deliver incredible fidelity and thunderous low-frequency response without masking any of the fine details.”
The entire room was fabric wrapped to conceal speakers and provide acoustic treatments for a clean linear effect. This was further enhanced with numerous zones of DMX controlled lighting.
An awkward nib at the rear of the room was utilised to form a comms room, with access to the room via a ‘hidden’ door within the rear Accupanel diffuser wall. The comms room features a Meridian 271 Theatre Controller and a Trinnov Altitude16 Audio Processor.
The whole project took just six weeks to complete, which included the extensive building work that was undertaken to convert the garage to habitable rooms.
The room is used daily and the client has enjoyed building up an extensive collection of classic and cult films from the 80’s and 90’s on his Kaleidescape server.
“The client was thrilled to see the finished room,” comments Gifford. “They were highly impressed with the transformation and how quickly it all came together with minimal disruption. They praised our dedicated team for managing the entire project, making it much less stressful without involving other trades. Each day, we had to keep the clients away from the space as they were eager to see the daily progress. When we finally unveiled the room, it
exceeded their expectations, they couldn’t have been any happier.”

FAST. INNOVATIVE. SECURE
Robert Hallam, International Sales Manager at Erard Pro, explains the trends the equipment support market needs to follow for success.
A big integration project will always involve multiple screens, and the drudgery of fixing them, tying up manpower and increasing your costs. But as screens become light enough to be handled by a single integrator, the opportunities to save a big chunk of labour and swell your bottom line can be seized with the right choice of mount: one designed for single-person install. You’ll also be needing more versatile mounts as the property market develops to include more ‘zero-drill’ environments requiring no-fix solutions and a greater choice of tabletop hardware with the expansion of remote working, as well as ‘greener’ products using a rising proportion of re-cycled materials as the priority for more ethical manufacturing gains
momentum. And with lighter screens, you’ll need more agile mobile supports supplying security plus easy flexibility. In meeting the evolving demands of the CI marketplace for innovation in equipment supports, we argue Erard Pro is always a step ahead. Plus ça change? We say bring it on.
LIGHTER SCREENS SHOULD LOWER THE COST OF INSTALLATION
It’s important to not measure cost in materials alone, but carefully consider how we can reduce the time required to complete the installation. With screen weights plummeting, we figured that a better designed mount would facilitate swifter single person install, reducing cost and improving profitability. Features like our patented latching system, integrated spirit level and off-centre spacers to easily adjust for a miss-drill help improve installation efficiency when using our ‘Fixit’ range of wall mounts. We place a high value on our customer feedback, and enjoy the challenges this feedback generates. One such challenge was to produce a product that could support a screen against a glass partition, without the need for any fixings. Our patented ‘Standit’ range of floor mounts allows screens up to 50Kg to be mounted without fixings. This product not
only solves the glass partition issues, but also answers issues in listed buildings, again with all the benefits of single person install. Standit offers maximum flexibility for the end-user and has been deployed in tens of thousands of commercial and residential environments around the world, solving many challenges, including the need to avoid fixing to walls in rental homes and offices.
A surge in remote working is driving the need for more table top solutions both at home and in the office. Larger screens and dual screen set ups, as well as tilt and swivel requirements are gaining popularity and driving demand for different solutions. Erard has the new ‘Nextia’ range to cater for this demand, meeting most needs while offering maximum flexibility. Eighty percent of our products are manufactured locally in Europe, using high quality steel supported by recycled materials wherever possible for a lighter environmental footprint. Released in 2023, our ‘Kana’ range of sleek mobile screen mounts is a direct response to lighter and slimmer displays. Available in steel or wood finish, this range provides an opportunity to place the screen in many locations within the room environment. Supplied with both fixed feet and castors, Kana offers flexibility in room placement for both commercial and residential environments. Erard Pro is available to integrators from the UK and Ireland from CUK.

UNDERSTANDING THE INTRICACIES OF MOUNTING DVLED DISPLAYS WITH PRECISION
Tom Fenton, Director of Technical & Product Development, EMEA, Peerless-AV, explains.
The mount is the most fundamental element required in any dvLED video wall project, but it is also hidden out of sight. The mounting solution should never be an afterthought or the missing piece in project planning. Here are some tips.
PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME
The mount is truly the foundation behind a dvLED display and the failure or success of a project rests on the decisions made. Which is why it is important for the mount partner to be involved right at the beginning of a project, to talk about what works, what fits and how potential issues can be prevented. At the start of the project, we would request architectural drawings such as an existing ‘as-built’ (2D floorplan) or a conception drawing of a new space. We want to do everything we can to mitigate potential pitfalls.
Creating a plan that allows time for a comprehensive assessment of the space ahead of the installation is crucial. One way is to visit the installation site while the construction of the space is still taking place. This would include coming with elevation drawings to review the infrastructure, such as studs, framing, location of cable runs, mounting points and power connections. However, if the final construction ends up differing from the initial elevation drawings, the mount solution will need to be redesigned and re-manufactured to be properly installed, resulting in additional time and money.
Another way to conduct a site survey is to visit the site after the construction of the space is complete. Ideally, this would be prior to designing and manufacturing the dvLED mounting structure. This would allow for a comparison of the initial plans and the result of the construction. This then gives engineering teams the opportunity to adjust the original design and ensure the final mounting solution aligns with the space.
This allows the opportunity to take preliminary measurements, view the different lighting and angles that may affect the quality of the dvLED displays, and note any spatial challenges that need to be addressed. These aspects take time but are critical to ensuring the installation is efficient and accurate.
The site survey will also identify potential environmental considerations such as vibration dampening, snow load or seismic activity. Perhaps the desired location is next to an elevator shaft or near a transit terminal. In certain cases, building certifications may be required to demonstrate that a property is compliant with local building codes and regulations.
CONSIDER STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY
Try not to be so focused on the dvLED display resolution and built-in technology that you bypass how you are going to attach the display to the wall. The safety and security of a dvLED video wall installation are highly dependent on
the structural integrity of both the mounting system and any walls or surfaces it will be attached to. This means installation teams must consider the weight of the video wall in addition to any other components that will be used to support it.
Some other things to consider are the location of the video wall. If it will be placed in a high-traffic area, it may be necessary to implement additional safety measures to ensure the video wall is secure. A trim kit may be necessary to provide protection to the exterior sides of the video wall. To prolong the life of dvLED video walls, it is also vital to ensure accessibility for proper maintenance and serviceability.
ENSURE ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS
Having inaccurate measurements of the space, mounting systems, curvatures, or anything else pertaining to the overall video wall does not only negatively affect the installation timeline, but also poses a safety hazard.
It is key to triple-check all measurements to ensure precision when completing the installation. Ensure the wall surfaces and surrounding areas adhere to the guidelines of construction tolerances. According to the Handbook of Construction Tolerance, +/- ¼in in 10’ is ideal for light-frame construction. Additionally, walls should not be more than ¼in out of plumb for any 32in vertical measurement.
PLAN FOR SETBACKS
Installation teams know, no matter how much you prepare for an installation, there are bound to be slight challenges, delays and human errors. Accounting for this in the planning process (ahead of the installation) can guarantee enough time is available to deal with any issues that may arise.
WORK WITH A TRUSTED TEAM
All of the preparation, meticulous measurements and challenging configurations of a dvLED video wall can be overwhelming. Always default to a professional team who has the experience and expertise to address engineering, safety, or visual concerns efficiently.

WIN BIG WITH SANUS!
Sanus goes large in time for the Euros to capture the full stadium experience at home.
Ahead of the UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany this summer, Sanus is introducing an upgraded version of its popular VXT7-B2 Premium TV mount, to enable football fans to experience the full stadium atmosphere on screens up to 140in in size.
For the best experience, the bigger the screen the more it feels like being there in the front-row. The recently upgraded VXT7-B2 tilting wall mount now accommodates TVs up to a huge 140in in size. It provides up to 10 degrees of tilt to give the ideal viewing angle, avoiding screen glare – giving the Euros fans the feeling that they are among the crowd in the stadium.
“The Euros are sure to get the country in a football frenzy and glued to the TV for a month, with friends and family all cheering their favourite teams on,” says Dean Carroll, international sales director – consumer. “And to really get into the full-on stadium experience, now is the perfect time to get a very large screen TV mounted on the wall with one of our tilting or full-motion mounts.”
To give that stadium feeling to as many people as possible, the VXF730-B2 full-motion mount is the ideal solution. With its 55 degrees of swivel, 77cm extension from the wall and capability of mounting a 95in TV screen, it ensures everyone watching is right there, in the heart of the action.
Weather permitting, many fans will no doubt opt for an outdoor garden party to watch
the tournament with family and friends, and there’s no better way of fixing a TV outside than with the Sanus full motion or tilting outdoor mounts. The Large Outdoor Premium Tilt TV Wall Mount and the Large Outdoor Premium Full-Motion TV Mount accommodate screens from 37in up to 95in.
And should the British weather be less than summery, both the outdoor-rated TV mounts are rigorously tested and designed for any weather conditions, using corrosion-resistant coating and stainless steel hardware.
As with all Sanus mounts they are packed full of useful features, such as the company’s exclusive patented Virtual Axis Fingertip tilting technology, allowing for smooth, easy tilting motion and ProSet adjustment for quick and easy micro adjustments to height and level.
Dean, who is looking forward to watching the games outside himself, says, “The outdoor entertainment market has exploded, with new external TV models and homeowners investing in outside entertainment spaces. I hope, weather permitting, they will see a lot of use during the Euros.”
Regardless of the installation, indoors or out, with their easy installation and cutting-edge technology, the Sanus premium full-motion and tilting mounts enable football viewers to watch all the action from anywhere.
As so much of the thrill of the tournament comes from the roar of the crowd, a high performance soundbar will make the matches
come alive. The WSBWM1-B2 Universal Extendable Soundbar Mount maximises the performance of Dolby Atmos equipped soundbars by extending forward of the screen to get the ultimate immersive auditory experience from the up-firing speakers. Plus, on a Sanus full-motion mount, the apparently floating soundbar moves in sync with the TV, so everyone gets the benefits of a great picture and great sound.
The Sanus premium mounts and the Sanus universal extendable soundbar mount are available now in the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe through selected channels.

SEAHORSES: A COASTAL HAVEN ENHANCED BY SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY
Using Niko Home Control as the basis, this striking cliff top new build embraced the 21st century with easy to use and fully supported home automation woven expertly into the fabric of the building.
Perched along the Southwest Coast Path in Maenporth, Cornwall, Seahorses looks to deliver a fusion of coastal elegance and cuttingedge technology. Nestled near Falmouth, this new build (which replaced an existing bungalow) was created under the guidance of architect and designers, Iris Projects. The home was created to be the owner’s retirement home, but also needed to accommodate fee paying holidaymakers in the high-end holiday let market when the owners were not at home. At the heart of the home lies the Niko Home Control system, orchestrating each aspect of the home’s functionality.
Andy Moss, owner of Moss Technical Services, official distributor for Niko in the UK, explains, “Ultraline sliding doors are a major part of the home to take advantage of the amazing views. We supply smart locks for the company, and it was they who introduced us to the home’s owner.
“He wanted to create a retirement home, but also be able to rent the property out when he was not staying there, so the system needed to be very simple to use and be able to switch modes from ‘renting’ to ‘at home’ mode.”
Andy adds, “In renting mode, the system restricts access to certain areas and aspects
ESSENTIAL CASE STUDY 70 JUNE 2024 /Essentialinstall @Install_mag /essential-install-mag essentialinstall.com
of the home such as the customer’s personal areas like their wardrobe. We can also access the system remotely to update functionality, and check system health at any time, making the system flexible, efficient and reliable.”
Andy also explains, “This Niko Home Control installation is a BUS wired full installation, but because the use of the property was changed to become a part time holiday let after the house was finished, we were able to provide the locking of the wardrobes and various other additional control elements by adding Niko Home Control wireless Zigbee controls to provide a seamlessly integrated addition to the BUS system already installed.”
Integrated lighting in the home and in the grounds is controlled with internal and external wall controls and easy to use interactive touch screens. Discreetly integrated motion and presence detection (including exterior IP rated units) ensures that much of the lighting functionality is automated and based on whether the space is occupied or not.
Niko’s Pure range of wall controls and interactive touch screens provide the intuitive and attractive control points, offering easy and fast access to the home’s different settings and moods. Seven-inch interactive screens are available to control video entry and delver deeper into the home’s abilities should the need arise.
With 12 underfloor heating zones and towel radiators managed by Niko Home Control, Seahorses ensures optimal comfort year-round. Residents can adjust temperatures to suit their preferences, creating a cozy retreat regardless of the season.
From automated blind adjustments to ventilation regulation, Niko Home Control
also empowers the owner to optimise natural light and airflow, fostering a pleasing indoor environment tailored to individual preferences.
Video gate entry, door locking mechanisms, fire alarm, and intruder alarm systems also integrate with the Niko Home Control ecosystem, safeguarding Seahorses and providing residents with peace of mind.
ELEVATING ENTERTAINMENT AND CONNECTIVITY
The home also offers various entertainment options. A Sonos Multi-Room Audio system provides music for every mood. The Sonos system also works with Amina speakers in the main entertainment/gaming space.

Niko Home Control offers a wide range of options to stay in command
With centralised SkyQ and CCTV distribution courtesy of HDAynwhere, Seahorses also ensures that residents enjoy seamless access to their favourite entertainment options and can access feeds from the security cameras too. High-speed wireless and wired networking, both indoors and outdoors, courtesy in the main by Netgear and Ubiquity, ensures that residents remain connected to the digital world, allowing residents to work, play and stay connected.
SEAMLESS INTEGRATION, EFFORTLESS CONTROL
Despite its advanced technology, Seahorses remains user-friendly, thanks to its full app and voice control capabilities. Whether adjusting lighting, setting the temperature, or queuing up a favourite playlist, residents can manage every aspect of their home environment with a simple voice command or tap of their smartphone.

CHOOSE STRONG RACKS AND MOUNTS
With its Strong brand, Snap One is focused on developing rack and mounting products and solutions that marry design, functionality, and product innovation to make life easier for installers and their customers as technology continues to evolve.
Take TV displays as an example. Screens that feature enhanced aesthetics, such as picture frame TVs and slimmer TVs challenge installers to consider how they’re going to perform and fit most neatly within the design of the space. Solutions must meet the requirements for functionality, yet also support these screens, their cables and accessories in a way that is visually pleasing to the client.
The Strong range includes a range of dealerinspired racks, TV mounts, unique backboxes and accessories, designed to make equipment faster and easier to install and simpler to service, as well as offering great solutions for the delivery of a clean, aesthetically attractive interior finish. There are a wide breadth of products and flexible solutions provided that offer protection as well as ensuring installed equipment looks good and is easy to access and service for maintenance.
The purpose-built line of recessed VersaBoxes can be used to hide media extenders, power conditioners, or an AppleTV, creating a pristine set up with all the benefits of easy installation and serviceability. With a specially designed removable panel on the VersaBox Pro, the Compact WattBox which powers the gear whilst saving ample space, can be easily ‘dropped in’ for a fully integrated solution.
GETTING STRONGER
Snap One also offer Strong In-Cabinet Slide Out Racks. These simplify access with a revamped design that’s more space-conscious and doesn’t require the sacrificing of rack space for a slider base. The wide range of sizes makes these racks easy to integrate into any room and project, while the 136kg capacity and premium steel hardware of each model guarantees rock-solid long-term performance. Each model features a 48cm slide out with locking 180-degree rotation, and both the slide and rotation can be unlocked using convenient foot pedals that enable single-person operation, even in confined spaces. The rotation can be locked into multiple different positions for optimal accessibility and to ensure a stable rack platform for AV equipment, whatever the rack location.
Snap One’s philosophy is to make life as easy and efficient as possible. Whether that be options for mounting larger, slimmer screens, more discrete, advanced cable management solutions, or easier-to-access racks, Snap One are focused on supporting installers with solutions that always adapt to the ever-changing market and continue to meet needs.
The Strong range of dealer-inspired racks, TV mounts, unique backbox solutions and accessories is available from Snap One to make every installation and maintenance project as smooth and straightforward as possible. Strong

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT
SONY BRAVIA 9 SERIES NOW AVAILABLE
This summer, step into a new realm of realism with Sony BRAVIA 9 series, the maker’s brightest 4K ever, and experience sports with immersive picture quality, unparalleled brightness and incomparably beautiful colours, says Sony.
Sony says this new offering redefines the viewing experience by delivering extraordinary picture quality as well as an expanded colour volume that keeps images vivid and saturated even at high brightness levels, so pictures are produced just as the creators intended. The BRAVIA 9 series incorporates XR Backlight Master Drive, inspired by the backlight control core technology in Sony master monitors, offering superior contrast with a unique dimming algorithm that precisely controls thousands of LEDs.
With higher luminance than ever, the series has been designed to faithfully reproduce detailed scenes, even in the brightest daylight, ensuring every image is rich in detail and depth.
At its core is the XR Processor, designed to deliver strong realism through a scene recognition system that detects and analyses data with high accuracy, optimising the picture. The XR Clear Image technology employs a custom database to convert favourite content to near 4K quality. Additionally, XR Motion Clarity analyses movement across
several frames and synchronises the backlight with on-screen motion, ensuring clear and bright images even during fast-moving action scenes.
The BRAVIA 9 series is the also world’s first TV equipped with Beam Tweeter technology. This innovation, combined with Acoustic MultiAudio+, has been created to deliver theatre-like sound. With Beam Tweeters at the top and Frame Tweeters at the sides, the sound comes from the right place and is synchronised with the visuals, providing an immersive audio-visual experience.
Via the Google TV platform, user can also enjoy a library of apps and content.
Sony says these large screens ensure users can enjoy the full impact of the BRAVIA 9’s picture and sound quality, whilst helping reduce your environmental footprint with the Eco Dashboard.

STEINWAY LYNGDORF RAISES THE BAR
Steinway Lyngdorf has announced the launch of the first Steinway & Sons Model S Soundbar. The maker says the Model S Soundbar redefines the audio performance of a soundbar, delivering extraordinary clarity, outstanding musicality and exceptionally powerful bass, combined with the signature design, materials and craftsmanship of Steinway & Sons. The Model S Soundbar is driven by powerful digital amplifiers, while the innovative RoomPerfectTM technology calibrates it for any room and placement.
A high-performance design with two powerful woofers, three Air Motion Transformer tweeters and three midrange drivers for clarity and detail, the product is powered by four digital amplifiers with a combined 1.600W. The rigid and heavy enclosure is made from machined solid aluminium front and back panels, housing a low-resonance MDF frame with five acoustically separated chambers inside. Its creator says this provides the ideal foundation for the loudspeaker drivers and ensures the purest sound from the highest to the lowest notes.
The Air Motion Transformer tweeters with Kapton foil and the midrange drivers with anodized aluminium cones are powered by strong neodymium magnets. The left-centre-right configuration allows a stable centre soundstage and imaging, either in stereo or with centre
8K ALL THE WAY FROM JVC
JVC has anounced four new high-end D-ILA home projectors. The DLA-NZ900/ DLA-RS4200 and DLA-NZ800/DLA-RS3200 all feature new third-generation 4K D-ILA devices with increased brightness that enable users to experience enhanced 8K images.
Also new is JVC’s proprietary BLU-Escent Laser light engine, which increases brightness and luminosity. The maker says users can experience higher definition images through the vastly improved performance of these projectors, achieved through 8K input and display, and the expansion of dynamic range by improving contrast and brightness.
There are two in the Precision Series, DLANZ900/DLA-NZ800 and two in the Reference Series, DLA-RS4200 and DLA-RS3200. All models are capable of inputting and displaying 8K images with enhanced performance. Sharper images and ultra-high contrast ratio are achieved with the third generation 0.69-inch native 4K D-ILA device, JVC’s proprietary 0.69-inch native 4K D-ILA device has been refined to its third generation to offer 1.5 times the native contrast ratio compared to the previous model. As a result, DLA-NZ900/DLA-RS4200 can achieve a native contrast ratio of 150,000:1 (100,000:1 for the DLA-NZ800/DLA-RS3200).
JVC’s original BLU-Escent Laser, which uses a blue laser diode as a light source, has been optimised to achieve exceptional brightness of 3,300 lumens on the DLA-NZ900/ DLA-RS4200 and 2,700 lumens on the

channel up-mixing / multichannel downmixing in the digital Steinway & Sons processor. The two 10in woofers are a high-excursion design with a four-layer voice coil, anodized aluminium cone, neodymium magnet and an ultra-rigid cast aluminium basket. The result, says the company, is an exceptional bass performance.
The black front is complemented by signature gold-plated tweeter frames and bronze-gold lacquered sides with black strings. Every Model S Soundbar is assembled and finished by hand in Skive, Denmark, made to the same quality standards as a Steinway & Sons piano. Customised lacquers and finishes are available on request.
The Model S Soundbar is part of the company’s Integrated System Approach, ensuring all parts of the system work perfectly together as one.

Following much speculation and anticipation, Sonos has made its headphones debut with Sonos Ace.
Sonos is now using its audio and design expertise to transform the way users listen on headphones, says the company. The premium over-the-ear Bluetooth headphones feature lossless and spatial audio, high-performance Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Aware Mode, as well what the company is calling the most precise and immersive home cinema experience possible using Sonos’ new TrueCinema technology.
Sonos says users can savour every second of a favourite song, podcast or phone call thanks to two custom-designed drivers that render each frequency with precision and clarity. Sonos Ace also lets users enjoy a surround sound home cinema experience while giving the household the gift of quiet. Instantly swap the TV audio from a compatible Sonos soundbar to Sonos Ace with just the tap of a button.
Coming later this year, Sonos’ all-new TrueCinema technology precisely maps the owners’ space then renders a complete surround sound system for a realistic listening experience. With Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), or activate Aware mode when more awareness of surroundings is required, users have options for listening in different environments. 30 hours of
battery life is included with Ultra-fast charging ensuring three hours of life with a quick threeminute charge using the included USB-C cable.
Sonos says Ace was made to look and feel as good as it sounds with a distinctive, slim profile created to blend metal accents with a sleek matte finish. The product also uses lightweight, premium materials for an airy fit that gently hugs the head. Its pillowy soft memory foam interior is wrapped in vegan leather, while a custom headband and ear cups that hide the hinge have been incorporated to create an acoustic seal without catching on hair. Sonos Ace’s fold flat design also fits snugly in its lightweight travel case.

Q ACOUSTICS LAUNCHES 3000C LOUDSPEAKER SERIES
Q Acoustics’ latest affordable, high-performance loudspeaker series, featuring C3 Continuous Curved Cone design is now officially launched.
Building on the legacy of the 3000i - Q Acoustics’ most popular and decorated speaker series –the company says this new range continues an unwavering track record of delivering a sonic performance and high-quality design and build way beyond its class.
The 3000c is described as the perfect entry-point into a modern audiophile world or as a cost-effective speaker upgrade.
This new speaker series features a C3 Continuous Curved Cone mid/bass driver design, first introduced in award-winning 5000 series and the M40 powered micro-tower speakers. Q Acoustics says its latest technical platform elevates the 3000c above its peers to deliver a sound defined by an articulate and fast midrange, controlled but powerful bass dynamics and nuanced and detailed high frequencies, alongside an exceptional soundstage not previously experienced at this level. The 3000c family is comprised of the 3010c bookshelf, 3020c stand-mount, 3030c larger stand-mount, 3050c floor-stander, with the 3090c centrechannel completing the line-up for a home cinema speaker set-up.
3000c series audio innovations include a new ground-up C3 (pronounced ‘C-cubed’) Continuous Curved Cone mid/bass profile for superior bass
dynamics and smoother integration with the high frequency driver. Also featured, a hermetically sealed high frequency driver unit is mechanically isolated from the baffle, preventing modulation from the mid/bass driver. The range also offers low colouration cabinets with P2PTM (Point to PointTM) bracing, minimising low-end reverberation to improve the stereo image and soundstage.
HPETM (Helmholtz Pressure EqualiserTM) tubes disrupt the build-up of standing waves, smoothing the frequency response and reducing distortion (3050c model only) whilst the range offers a clean and contemporary aesthetic with sophisticated satin metallic driver trims. The family is available in four new finishes: Pin Oak, Claro Walnut, Satin White, Satin Black.
