Star of the hit TLC TV series, Long Island Medium, and best-selling author of There’s More to Life than This and You Can’t Make This Stuff Up, Theresa Caputo communicates with the dead for a living. It’s a gift that she’s had from a very early age and over the years, has developed into a life-changing career, impacting millions of people. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Caputo’s “made for TV” with her big personality and flamboyant fashion sense; the camera loves her and vice-versa. And while some may take issue with the “reality show” aspect of Long Island Medium, for Caputo, it’s a natural progression. She started by giving individual readings and through word-of-mouth, built a huge following. In fact, before graduating to TV, her schedule was booked solid for up to two years. Now she simply broadcasts her gifts and reaches a mass audience every week. While filming another round of shows for TLC, Caputo kindly took a few minutes out of her very busy schedule to speak with News4U.
6 | April 2015
As a child, were you aware enough at the time to understand those early feelings and sensations? What did you think was happening and did you share your experiences with your family? I thought that everything I was sensing and feeling was normal! I thought everyone felt what I was feeling! I shared some of the things I was sensing with my family. After starting your career in such a low-key, wordof-mouth way, how daunting and/or exciting was it to broadcast your gifts on national television? It was very exciting to have my gifts shared on television, because my wish was to always help people. Now I am able to share messages that heal millions of people one episode at a time. Despite your paranormal day job, off-camera you live a very normal life. Do you ever bring work home with you, in a sense, or can you completely separate your two lives?
My life is no different than anyone else’s! We just have cameras that follow us now! Haha! You have moved so many of your followers/fans to tears and changed so many lives with your readings. Is there a particular individual that you’ve had an impact on that stands out? Honestly, every reading I have done is special to me because it has impacted someone in a positive way! Your TLC show has been a huge success. Where do you see your gifts taking you in the future? Who knows?! But at the end of the day, I’m just Theresa Caputo from Hicksville – mother, daughter, sister, wife and medium. – TE For ticket info, visit thefordcenter.com or theresacaputo.com.

Some of the best and most respected comedians in the world have come through Evansville over the years, including Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Cosby (currently not-sorespected, admittedly), Kevin Hart and Bill Maher just to name a few. But there’s something about Bill Burr’s impending arrival that has area comedy fans and aspiring comedians even more charged up than usual. No doubt, his loose tongue and cutting humor stand out in an overcrowded field of soft entertainers. Burr pulls no punches as he sets up biting punch lines that go for the throat and so often kill. Unlike so many people-pleasing comedians, the guy cares not one bit what you think – particularly whether or not you think he’s funny. FYI, Burr is hilarious. - TE Local comedian (and the subject of this month’s Local Talent article) Rachael

Goldman wholeheartedly agrees and was kind enough to share her thoughts about the upcoming show:
with it. That said, you may know him from Chappelle’s Show, Kroll Show, The New Girl and his recurring role as “Kuby” on Breaking Bad.
The show will be loud, unapologetically off-color and, above all else, hilarious. One should expect nothing less from the guy who began his 2014 Netflix special I’m Sorry You Feel That Way with the following disclaimer:
The evening promises to be an exciting opportunity to watch Burr as he works on new material for his next special. Don’t miss your chance to be in on the joke! – RG
“If you have strong religious beliefs, politically correct opinions, or are easily offended by crude language and sexual innuendo CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED.” Oh, don’t you worry, Bill. This is Evansville. We’ve heard a lot worse, and we were probably the butt of the joke. Burr has released three other specials, including You People Are All The Same, Let It Go and Why Do I Do This?. He has hosted the weekly, one-hour “Bill’s Monday Morning Podcast” since ’07. He’s performed for David Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon. s advertised, the 2014-2015 EPO season has featured an incredibly rich and diverse series of performances with something for everyone. But only a few opportunities to “Experience the Phil” remain, including this month’s The Ultimate Glee Club and Beethoven & Tchaikovsky and the grand finale, Disney Live in Concert: Pirates of the Caribbean, in May. Highly anticipated, The Ultimate Glee Club brings together American Idol finalists LaKisha Jones (2007) and Matt Giraud (2009) and the EPO’s specially auditioned high school show choir as they sing and dance their way through popular songs featured in Glee, the long-running Fox TV show. Highlights include Adele’s “Rumor Has It,” Coldplay’s “The Scientist” and “All that Jazz” from the musical Chicago. In addition, Jones and Giraud take turns showcasing their talents with unique interpretations of “Proud Mary,” “Georgia On My Mind,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” and “Sweet Caroline.”

A singer-songwriter from Michigan, Giraud’s career took off when he placed fifth on American Idol in 2009. His popularity with fans prompted the judges to use the “save” option for the first time, giving Giraud a reprieve and the opportunity to continue in the competition for several more weeks. A charismatic and accomplished performer, he continues to make strides in the entertainment industry, and The Ultimate Glee Club is further vindication of his Idol success. In 2007, Jones, also a Michigan native, made the top four on American Idol. Her early years included musical theatre and singing in church choirs – experiences that prepared her for the Idol spotlight. Now married and a devoted mother, Jones still has the vocal chops that put her on the map and this exciting collaboration with Geraud is the perfect vehicle for her undeniable talent. After the contemporary feel of Glee, prepare to revisit the classics with the EPO and guest pianist Adam Golka as they breathe new life into cherished works by the world’s most popular composers. Beethoven & Tchaikovsky features the Prometheus Overture, Piano Concerto No. 4 (with Golka) and Symphony No. 4 – all masterpieces filled with great drama and incredible energy. Don’t miss this grand salute to the giants of classical music. - TE For ticket info, visit victorytheatre.com or evansvillephilharmonic.org. Times: 4/11 (7 p.m.); 4/12 (2 p.m.); 4/25 (7 p.m.). Old Dominion is on the cusp of country music stardom. Made up of five veterans of the Nashville scene with a long list of songwriting credits for big names like Luke Bryan and Kenny Chesney, the band keeps winning over new fans with its current single, “Break Up with Him,” a shout-out to frustrated guys. But it’s only the beginning of what is shaping up to be a huge year for OD. On the road through the summer and beyond, the band is in high demand and will soon join Kenny Chesney’s “The Big Revival Tour” for 17 dates. Exposure on such a big stage should punch their ticket to national success – which makes OD’s show at Backstage Bar & Grill a must-see event. In between meetings and rehearsals for the big tour, lead singer Matthew Ramsey, multiinstrumentalist Trevor Rosen and bassist Geoff Sprung kindly spoke with News4U. Can you sense that big things are happening for the band – is it a tangible feeling? MR: Most of the time it’s after something happens, and we’re like ‘wow, that was a big moment.’ We don’t always realize the gravity of what’s happening, because it’s happening so fast. TR: We just played Joe’s Bar in Chicago, and we ended up selling it out which blew us away. But then to hear people singing all the words – that made us look at each other and go ‘man, what’s going on?’” GS: The moments that get me are when we’re with people in the industry with lots of experience that say to us ‘I hope you guys are savoring this moment, because everything’s going to happen really fast for you guys, and you’re going to blow up.’ It’s very sobering. These are people that know how this works.
12 | April 2015
• www.evansvillemediagroup.com
Why do you think “Break Up with Him” has resonated so strongly with country music listeners? TR: I’m not sure exactly, but our producer Shane MacAnally says it just has the “magic dust” – he can’t explain it, but he knew it the second he heard it. It’s an intangible thing that immediately grabs people’s attention and takes on a life of its own. MR: The challenge in all music genres is to say something that has been said a million times but in a different way. For some reason, I feel like with this song, we’ve found something that hasn’t been talked about a whole lot. And a lot of relationships have started that way (laughs). How are you preparing for the big tour dates with Kenny Chesney? MR: When you’re playing a stage that size, you have to upgrade. We had to get all kinds of new equipment and get used to that. We’re busy picking the songs to play and trying to decide how to get the most bang for our 25 minutes out there. Still, we can only prepare to a certain point and then once we step out on that stage a couple times we’ll know how to fine tune it. Finally, what can we expect from your set at Backstage? MR: We’re a new band, and we love playing a smaller place like that. It’s exciting and we bring the fire and try to have a lot of fun with each other and the crowd. We’ll play our songs as well as the songs we’ve written for other people. It will be an entertaining night. - TE For more info, visit olddominionband.com or follow them on Facebook. pproaching two decades together as a band, American rockers O.A.R. (short for Of a Revolution) made it the old-fashioned way: by playing live. When lead vocalist March Roberge and drummer Chris Culos came together in 1996, the digital era was still in its infancy; the only real option for a couple of young guys looking to make musical inroads was to form a band, record and perform. Bassist Benj Gershman and lead guitarist Richard On were brought onboard to flesh out the sound, and the quartet hit the studio. Featuring standout tracks like “Black Rock” and “That Was a Crazy Game of Poker,” The Wanderer incorporated elements of acoustic /folk rock and soul with a jam band approach (i.e., long songs) and appeared to be heavily influenced by the likes of Blues Traveler. O.A.R.’s sophomore album, Soul’s Aflame, saw the addition of saxophonist Jerry DePizzo – completing the lineup that remains intact to this day. With a solid group of songs and a beefed up sound, O.A.R. began expanding its tours, playing outside their home base of Ohio and slowly building a unique following of fans.
Lava Records – a decision that paid off with the band’s next release. Stories of a Stranger appeared in 2005, debuting at #40 on the Billboard 200 and producing one of O.A.R.’s most popular songs, “Love and Memories.” Whether a coincidence or not, the new partnership with Lava resulted in a more pop approach for the band: shorter songs, streamlined arrangements. The fan base clearly approved and live shows attracted bigger and bigger crowds, peaking with a sell-out at Madison Square Garden. 2008’s All Sides cashed in on the band’s newfound mass appeal with another huge single, “Shattered (Turn the Car Around).” The buzz surrounding the album and subsequent tour boded well for the follow-up, 2010’s King. It reached #12 on the charts, a high-point for the band and served as a good omen for a new partnership with Wind-Up Records. While 2012 saw the release of Live on the Red Rocks, a CD/DVD package documenting O.A.R.’s appearance at Red Rocks Amphitheater, it would be another two years before the band emerged with a new studio album. Finally, fans were sated with The Rockville LP in June of 2014. Featuring the single “Peace,” it stands as one of O.A.R.’s finest collection of songs to date. – TE
Ironically, the band’s third album, Risen, was released just six months before the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. 2001 may have been a black mark on American history, but it was a great year for O.A.R. Risen proved to be very successful and with the rise of the internet, the fans could communicate and spread the word about the band’s incredible live shows. The follow-up, In Between Now and Then, drew much attention from major labels, but though numerous For ticket info, visit thefordcenter.com or offers considered, O.A.R. ultimately signed with ofarevolution.com. 14 |were April 2015 • www.evansvillemediagroup.com

3rd Annual Color Me Fun 5K and Earth Day Bazaar on Franklin Street April 25 / 9 AM - 2 PM The “jewel of the west side,” Franklin Street keeps growing with new businesses and events added every year. In fact, the area has become so popular that even winter’s chill couldn’t dampen the spirit of Mardi Gras back in February – a testament to the hard work of the Franklin Street Events Association (FSEA) members and all they do to give back to the community. And now that spring is finally here, it’s time to get out and enjoy what is quickly becoming a beloved west side tradition: the Color Me Fun 5K and Earth Day Bazaar. This annual family-friendly event is the FSEA’s biggest fundraiser, helping to pay for all of the good work being done to promote the area (from movie nights to concerts, pub crawls to trick or treating) and provide a platform for charitable activities. Starting at 9 a.m., the celebration begins with “the most colorful and fun run to hit the streets of Evansville.” All participants are welcome: kids, walkers and runners of all abilities. Everybody can get in on the 5K action and have a blast getting (or staying) healthy. After the run, get ready for the folk-rock brilliance of The Giving Tree Band, back for a much deserved encore. The dynamic group from Yorkville, Ill. has been together for over a decade and is widely known for a homegrown sound created from acoustic and electric guitars, slide guitars, banjo, violin, mandolin and pedal steel. Comparisons include Neil Young, Bob Dylan and The Beatles.

In addition to the Color Me Fun 5K and concert in the park, the Earth Day Bazaar (on the lawn of the West Branch Library) will be in full swing all morning and afternoon, acting as a kick off to the Summer Bazaar that was so well-received last year. Look forward to earth science demos, seedling giveaways, input from local farmers and tons of earthy goodness! Come on out and support this great event and help the FSEA raise money to fund all the other activities that we enjoy throughout the year on Franklin Street. Everyone is welcome, so bring your family and friends and show your love for the west side! - TE To register for the 5K, visit riseupandrun.com/color-me-fun. Restaurant Spotlight 7700 Eagle Crest Blvd. / 812-476-7069 Just off of the Lloyd Expressway as you’re heading east towards Newburgh, there’s a tall business sign on the right with a giant martini glass indicating the home of Bar Louie, a “casual but upscale” restaurant. The name inevitably causes some confusion. Yes, there’s a bar inside (award-winning, no less), but in truth, it’s a family-oriented operation with two separate dining areas that caters to all ages. Despite the contradictions, Bar Louie has been a powerhouse since opening over five years ago. “Sales are up 10% annually – business keeps growing as word continues to get out,” GM Wesley Wright says. “We still have people saying ‘wow, I didn’t know this place was here.’” The Bar Louie concept took shape in Chicago, and the corporation (based in Texas) is approaching the 100 store mark. Impressively, the east side location is one of the most successful and one of the few that does 50% alcohol / 50% food sales (most do 60/40). “It’s important for us to try to the get that image out there to the community,” Wright says. “We’re not a true bar – it’s ok to bring your kids here. There’s no sign on the door that says we’re over 21.” Even a cursory look at the expansive menu should be enough to change minds. For starters, almost everything is made in-house (sans bread), even salad dressings. You can get any number of delicious appetizers like Chicken Nachos (#1 seller), Blackened Salmon Sliders and Adobo Shrimp Skewers, plus incredible burgers and sandwiches and amazing plates like Voodoo Chicken (#1 seller) and Sesame Encrusted Ahi Tuna. If you are 21 and over, the drink options include expertly made martinis, cocktails, margaritas and mojitos plus a wine selection to please even the most discerning patron.
As a corporation, Bar Louie always aims to stay fresh and modern, overhauling the menu every four to eight months. The latest rollout took place on March 25. “We’re trying to keep on the cutting edge. Some items stay, but there’s a lot of brand new stuff,” Wright says. “On top of that, we have seasonal rollouts. Every 90 days, the corporation introduces new food items and runs them for that period. The same goes for the drinks.” Best of all, Bar Louie has what are called “rituals” – incredible daily specials meant to satisfy the entire family. For example, Tuesday night (after 5 p.m.) is Dollar Burger Night; Wednesday night is Beer Night, featuring $5 buckets of beer and $5 martinis; Thursday night is Wine Night, featuring $5 glasses of wine (select glasses) and $5 off select bottles. There’s something happening most every day of the week. The recipient of countless Readers’ Choice Awards, Bar Louie’s secret weapon is their staff. “I love my people,” Wright says. “We have great, friendly service – and fast. At lunch, you’re going to get your food within 12 minutes.” With such a solid employee base and steady increase in business, it appears the sky’s the limit for the Official Sponsor of the United Leasing Championship. “Bigger and better things are on the horizon for this location – a lot of changes are coming in the next six months,” Wright says. Finally, in regards to the name… Contrary to popular belief, there is no “Louie.” He does not exist. “I tell everybody that it’s Bar Chris or Bar Paul or whoever walks in the door,” Wright explains. “I want you to feel at home when you come in. If you pull in the parking lot, the sign says “Bar You” – it’s your place.” - TE

What ' s Cookin ‘ N
estled just outside of the heart of downtown Newburgh, Vecchio's Italian Market is not lacking in taste or charm. Owners Amanda and Dan Hancock have a one-of-a-kind establishment with riverfront views and a New England feel right here in the Midwest. The deli-style entrance is bursting with pastries, meats and cheeses and a wine room for perusal. Made up of cozy rooms with bar-style seating, the building even boasts a fireplace flanked by shelves of imported Italian pastas, oils and sauces for sale. The walls are decorated with posters of Italian art nouveau. Although there are some soda (with an extensive root-beer selection) and coffee lists hung about, flyers for specials and their everyday Stromboli and pizzas, you won't find a menu – their dishes are homemade and rotate daily. During my visit, pastry chef Anna was on duty and a very hospitable host. The first dish on offer was the Stromboli. Take everything you typically imagine about this sandwich and throw it out the window. Their gourmet version, loaded with sweet Italian sausage/ground beef, pepperoni, tangy homemade sauce and fresh mozzarella, is tucked inside perfectly seasoned, handmade dough with a crunchy outside and melt-in-your-mouth inside. Next up, I enjoyed a quiche layered with turkey, fresh spinach and artichoke. Quiche can be a difficult dish to perfect, but their recipe is flawless; the egg has an ideal, custard-like consistency, there's a sweetness in the flaky crust, and each layer is bursting with flavor. Served with a mixed green salad and their popular balsamic house dressing, the meal was light yet hearty. Finally, I tried a deli sandwich, the Redwood Original, with turkey, aged Swiss, a generous amount of bacon and honey mustard. The still-warm, homemade focaccia bread took it to the next level. A personal favorite are the uniquely delicious and sweet horseradish pickle chips served on the side. All sandwich specials come with chips and a homemade cookie of your choice. Open at 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and at 10 a.m. on Sundays, enjoy Vecchio's for an early brunch or early dinner. As everything is made fresh daily, be an early bird to make sure you don't miss out. For daily specials and availability, call ahead or follow them on Facebook. – Whitney Patterson

local chef spotlight chuck subra of tropicana Evansville “People ask me what’s the best thing I ever did in my life, and I tell them that I got out of New Iberia and moved to New Orleans to be a cook,” Chuck Subra, Tropicana Evansville’s new Executive Chef, says about his momentous decision to leave home in the early 90s for bigger and better things. Yet, he acknowledges that his small town upbringing and reliance on family made a huge impact, helping to both shape his character and ignite his passion for food. “I grew up in a very strong Louisiana household,” Subra says. “My grandmother cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. It was all about the kitchen and all the kids had a job – slicing turkey, ham or cleaning, etc. Food has always been a family thing.” Even Subra’s grandfather got in on the act. Primarily a shipbuilder, he created cooking techniques on the side that worked to restore nutrients and improve health. Growing up in such a food-centric family, Subra was eager to get involved in the restaurant business. He first landed at a catering company and after a period at the front of the house, eventually settled in the kitchen and “found where I really enjoy
being.” Looking to further his career, Subra attended a community college in Lafayette just long enough to convince his parents to support the big move to New Orleans. He was immediately in awe of his new surroundings. “The food is different, the culture’s different. You get up and go or you get run over. If you want something, you have to set your goal and go get it,” Subra says. And that’s exactly what he did. After receiving his Diploma in Culinary Arts, Subra took a position at the five-star Windsor Hotel – “a place where you start stepping up your game.” He advanced from cook to sous chef, developing his strong French influence under the tutelage of Master Chef Rene Bajeux and learning the “cooking from the earth” philosophy – using foods from the region of which they originate. From there, he upgraded to Executive Sous Chef at the Renaissance Arts Hotel, furthering his understanding of the corporate side of the business. It was the perfect preparation for his next big move. With such a fantastic resume, it’s no surprise that Subra got the call early this year to take over all culinary operations and kitchens at Tropicana Evansville. What is surprising is
that he left his beloved New Orleans behind, but the opportunity was too good to pass up. “I love the property, and the ability to have an influence on all the restaurants (Cavanaugh’s, Mama Mia’s, Max & Erma’s, Temptations Buffet, Diamond Deli, Riverview Coffee Company, Blush Ultralounge, Le Merigot Hotel Guest Room Service and Convention Services),” he says. In just his first week on the job in March, Subra’s presence was felt in the improved quality of the food and overall leadership. And he’s already incorporating his southern influence, introducing classic items like Chicken Blanquette and Beef Bourguignon, gumbo and even grits. “It may go over well, it may not – we’ll see,” Subra says. “I need to see if the locals like that kind of stuff.” Regardless, one thing’s for sure: Tropicana is lucky to have one of the most talented chefs in the region, a self-described “boy from Louisiana who likes food and the family spirit of the kitchen.” – TE Tropicana Evansville is located at 421 NW Riverside in downtown Evansville.

The Electric Owl is the kind of salon that you would find in a bigger city. From the moment the door opens, visitors are greeted with a curated playlist of indie rock, beautiful handcrafted jewelry, and rock ‘n roll posters. Owner and senior stylist Amy Walters has worked hard to make the atmosphere inviting by bringing personality to every aspect of her business. Known as a “color guru” by loyal clients, Walters created the Owl after working in high-end salons for years. The idea behind the salon is that no kind of art exists in a vacuum: she believes that fashion, music, and art—which includes hairstyling—all feed into each other. The result is a salon that doesn’t bear any resemblance to more pretentious, stuffy boutiques; the Owl is a comfortable and fun place to get a haircut, whether you want something cutting edge or more mainstream. In addition to Walters, the Electric Owl also features junior stylist Bethany Gillepsie. The salon is open to acquiring one (maybe two!) other groovy stylists to work in the artsy environment. – Katie Mullins
For more info, including pricing (starting at $21 for men, $38 for women), visit theelectricowl.com. You can find them on Facebook (Facebook.com/TheElectricOwl), Twitter (@ElectricOSalon), and Pinterest (pinterest.com/theelectricowl). The salon also has a contract with Davines hair products, a boutique organic line that focuses on sustainability and eco-friendly packaging. New customers get 20% off any color bookings.

It seems to me like everyone these days is rushing toward “local” establishments: farmers markets, restaurants and, of course, breweries. This, to me at least, is very refreshing. My wife and I try to “keep it local” with our friends whenever possible. Beer writer Stan Hieronymus recently gave a lecture in which he reported that for every $100 spent at a local establishment, $73 stay in your community. That, in itself, is the very essence of sustainability. Having recently taken over as head brewer at Evansville’s oldest operational brewery, I’ve reveled in the opportunity to immerse myself in this whole “local” thing and what it means for our city. Every morning, I get the privilege of waking up early, walking in the back door and brewing some of southern Indiana’s favorite beer. As a leader in Evansville’s local restaurant scene, we at Turoni’s are more than excited to continue offering our award-winning Honey Blonde Ale, our hop-famous Moose Squared Imperial IPA, and many other brews you’ve come to love and anticipate year round. We’ll also be trying a few new tricks and brewing some new styles. So, local, that’s what I was getting at, right? We are blessed with many local options in the area for great pizza and burgers and, of course, beer. I know people like to try new things and have favorite spots, but when you get a taste for our famous House Special pizza and an ice cold pint of fine, hand-crafted beer, we’ll be ready for you. Cheers! – Josh Pietrowski

In the Beginning… Four years ago, the producers of a History Channel documentary, The Epic History of Everyday Things, hired me to address the topic of the discovery of beer. An easy assignment, huh? We are accustomed to today’s version: a beverage made, in its most basic form, from water, yeast, a malted grain and possibly an herb, spice, fruit or vegetable. Although barley normally is that grain, rice, corn, wheat and other items can also be used. Early iterations bore no resemblance to what we currently enjoy, but evidence confirming barley, a substance that produces good beer but not so good bread, was grown 6,000 years ago in Mesopotamia does exist. Other cultures, such as that of the Sumerians, have left artifacts that affirm the production of beer. In some societies, beer served as legal tender. The people who built the Egyptian pyramids were given the beverage as payment, known as kash. It would be safe to say that the drink was accepted universally throughout the recorded history of mankind.
Beer, Water and the New World… Although a maize beer was created by Mexicans, brewing did take place in what would become the Colonies in the late 1500’s, years before the first settlement at Jamestown. In September 1620, the

Pilgrims set sail on the ship Mayflower from England. The 102 people on board (only 35 of whom actually sought religious freedom) simply wanted to leave England for a new life in America. The 2,000-mile voyage took over two months to complete. Aboard the ship were items such as bread, fruits, dried meats, cheese and beer. Unusual, you say? The notion of including beer on sea crossings was common practice in the years prior to refrigeration, as fresh water would go bad quickly. (Remember, this is before chlorine and filtered water.) With its alcohol content, the beer remained potable longer than water. Additionally, there are records indicating that the Pilgrims landed on the shores of Massachusetts in part because of a lack of beer. Had there been more beer on the ship, might they have landed on what now is New York?
Breaking the Color Barrier… Porter, a dark roasty style of beer that was extremely popular in London, typically was the beer sent to India. Regrettably, it arrived tasting stale and sour. Also, the dark ales plainly were not as satisfying to the colonists now living in the warmth of their new country. The solution came from a brewer living in London. Until this time,
most brewers were trying to alter their methods, in an attempt to turn out a more stable beer. George Hodgson, however, created his India Ale, a derivation of his pale ale. Hodgson’s ales were among the first beers that were not brown or black. What separated India Ales from all others was the increased alcohol content, a primary weapon against spoilage. Brewers also recognized the preservative factors that hops offered. Consequently, Hodgson added an additional dose of hops (and more sugar) to keep the yeast functioning during the lengthy voyage. The end result was a bitter, bubbly pale ale that successfully survived the long trip. Hodgson became a folk hero. Within 25 years, beer shipments to India increased fivefold. India Pale Ale or IPA remained an export-only drink until a ship heading for India was demolished. Its cargo was sold and Britons were exposed to this beer’s existence. It became enormously popular locally and soon spread throughout much of Western Europe. These were powerful beers indeed, approaching 10% ABV. Before the end of the 19th century, all that changed and India Pale Ales became remarkably weaker.
Within a few generations, improvements in transportation changed people from hesitant to enthusiastic travelers.
America the Brewtiful… Beer has been popular in the United States since the country’s inception. There were more breweries in the late 19th century than exist today, but there are different concerns. Obviously back then, access to a variety of beers was limited because transportation simply didn’t allow for extensive distribution. Certain key events that took place in that decade still resound today. 1976 is considered a landmark in American beer history, as it was in October of that year when the first modern microbrewery, New Albion Brewing Co. of Sonoma, California, was incorporated. Keep in mind that the working definition of a “microbrewery” signifies a company producing up to 15,000 barrels (17,600 hectoliters) of beer annually. Today the use of the word “microbrewery” has evolved into “craft brewery,” an independently owned business turning out up to two million barrels of beer a year. Near the end of the 1970’s, there were fewer than 50 breweries in the entire country. Contrast that with a hundred years prior when close to 3,000 breweries existed nationwide. Although New Albion lasted only six years, the wheels were in motion for an increased interest in full-flavored beers.
Food for Thought…
Keeping It Cold… Mechanical refrigeration was the single most important innovation that changed the brewing industry by allowing beer to be moved worldwide. The invention of the microscope meant that yeast action could be studied and improved. As the drinkability of the beverage increased, so did the distance that beer could be successfully shipped.
In the 1980’s, a splinter to the micro, the “brewpub,” came into being. What distinguished it from a brewery was the fact that food was served in the place where the beer was made. Although the handcrafted beer remained the primary attraction to those who frequented the brewpub, as time progressed emphasis was given to food preparation. Today, any good brewpub will feature an extensive array of beers and a bill of fare that complements the house brews. There are brewpubs that have received recognition for excellence from prestigious culinary publications. The trend to more flavorful drinks, now known by a number of names, including “craft” and “boutique” beer, expanded Cont. on page 58

Cont. from page 57 geographically when the Manhattan Brewing Co. became the first brewpub to open in the East, in New York City.
Still the King… Make no mistake about it, despite the enormous surge in the popularity of handcrafted brews, sales of the beverages made by the giants of the trade continued to flourish. Well into the 1990’s, the “Big Three” of Anheuser-Busch, Coors and Miller Brewing produced three of every four domestic beers. In fact, AnheuserBusch had surpassed the billion mark in
Tastes Great… and It’s Good for Me?! According to the Brewers Association, moderate beer consumption (no more than two drinks a day for men, one for women) may be able to: 1. Lower rates of heart disease by 30 to 60 percent; 2. Aid in bone formation. Beer contains silicon, a mineral that helps to build bone mass; 3. Prevent cell damage that can lead to cancer and heart disease. Two ingredients in beer, hops and malt, are supply much needed antioxidants, known to fight disease. Beer contains polyphenols, also found in berries, tea, grapes, wine, olive oil, cocoa, certain nuts and other fruits and vegetables; 4. Reduce incidences of diabetes; 5. Protect against certain types of strokes, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Lastly, beer contains no fat or cholesterol. The calories come principally from the alcohol.
Going Out on a High Note…. The End cases produced worldwide. If you think the popularity of these “new” beers, now given the term “boutique” or, more popularly “craft,” spelled the death knoll for the large breweries, nothing could be further from the truth. In 2013, Bud Light and Budweiser alone sold 400,000 cases of beer to American consumers. That translates to dollar sales of over $8 billion. Coors Light brought in close to $2.5 billion.
Finding a Niche… Over the last few years, there has been an influx of more unusual beer flavors, incorporating atypical ingredients. Take a look at Dogfish Head Brewery as a prime example. At any one time, you’ll find beers such as Festina Peche, a Berliner Weisse made with peaches; Chateau Jiahu, an ancient Chinese re-creation using rice flakes, Wildflower honey, Muscat grapes, hawthorn fruit and Chrysanthemum flowers and sake yeast; Fort, a raspberry infused fruit beer that tops out at 18% alcohol-by-volume (ABV); and Midas Touch Golden Elixir, a hybrid based on findings of the funerary feast of King Midas. Midas Touch contains elements of barley (beer), Muscat grapes (wine) and honey (mead). To top things off, saffron, one of the most expensive spices in the world, is added to the mix. You don’t think the introduction of those beers didn’t excite beer drinkers?

It’s the best time in history to love beer! I’ve been saying this for a while now and I truly believe it. It took a long time to get the current craft beer love affair going, but now it’s in full swing. Let me start by saying that I am no expert on craft beer. I do not brew beer, and I did not go to school for beer, but I have picked up a lot of information in my time with it. Simply put, I am a craft beer enthusiast. A beer geek? Maybe. A beer snob? I try not to be. When I started bartending at the Gerst Haus almost 15 years ago, it changed my view on what beer actually is. I began tasting the German and Belgian beers we had on tap (25 when I started) as well as in the bottle. I was amazed by the character and taste of those beers and especially fell in love with the sweet, funky and complex Belgian styles. I went on to add four more taps and to experiment with some of the newer microbreweries that were being distributed in our area (Schlafly, Stone, Bell’s, Goose Island, Leinenkugel) with varying degrees of success. It was very hard at that time to get people out of their habits, but I kept pushing. Many years and converts later, craft beer was finally here. More of my draft lines were switching to craft and with enough hand selling and coaching people, things started to take off. Then along came Tin Man Brewing followed shortly thereafter by Carson’s Brewery and FINALLY we had a couple of local distributing craft breweries in Evansville. The craft beer boom had arrived. That’s when I decided to add 16 taps dedicated to craft (and with the four from Tin Man) and expanded my draft to 49.
On a nationwide scale, craft beer is looking like it will have a never ending exponential rise to the top. With new craft breweries opening up almost every day, as well as brewers reviving old beer styles and inventing new ones, it seems the sky’s the limit. Just one problem: there’s not enough shelf space! Unfortunately, with so many new products to sort through, I seldom get the chance to drink many of the beers that I fell in love with so many years ago. There are so many good beers available on the market today and even more excellent ones being brewed. In short, the competition is fierce. Evansville is still a very young market when it comes to craft beer. The majority of the craft beer drinkers in the area have only been into the scene for about two or three years and have not had the history lesson that comes with drinking the 1000+ year old tradition of German and Belgian beers. Along with the English brews, these beers started all of this. Know your roots! I poke fun, but we have a long way to go as far as craft beer education is concerned. To the people who are knowledgeable and well-versed in craft beer, I know who you are (I see most of you on a weekly basis!). Keep up the great work. Try not to be snobbish or condescending to those who aren’t in tune with craft beer; instead, offer them a taste. Craft beer is a community, and one that has to keep its gates open for all. So tell a friend, have a beer tasting, explore new styles; but most of all have fun and enjoy it! Sincerely thirsty, Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • April 2015 | 59 Paul Ankenbrand
Garlic, Salted, Beer-Baked French Fries Ingredients • 1 bottle craft beer • 3 russet potatoes • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 3 Tbsp olive oil • 1-1 1/2 tsp salt • 1/4-1/2 tsp black pepper

In a large bowl, soak the cut fries in 1 bottle of beer 4. Let soak for 15min, tossing 1 - 2x. 5. Drain beer and toss with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper, until well coated. 6. Pairing Craft Beers and Summer Foods By Jason Watson of Liquor Locker
W
arm weather has finally returned and as summer draws closer, we know the heat will hit and hit hard. But we’ll fight back with evening pool parties, by perching on the porch with fans blowing or by just enjoying a frosty adult beverage. Yes, many of us will cool our days with cold brews - and the tasty treats they complement. To make sure you pair the right beverage with your favorite foods, there are some simple tricks you can learn that will help satisfy the pickiest of peeps you may entertain or merely make your calmest evening at home a delicious one. Let me start by saying, if you like it, you should
eat and drink it. Just because I like sushi, doesn’t mean you have to like sushi. The same holds true for those around you. Just because you like big, bold IPAs certainly doesn’t mean your company will, and it doesn’t make them wrong, either. Don’t assume that your opinion on what is delicious is fact; it’s just simply what YOU enjoy. Balance is the key in pairing beer and food. Keep your guests’ opinions in mind when trying to cater to them, and I guarantee you will have a time they won’t soon forget. So let’s get down to brass tax. One thing you must understand: the craft beer world is ever changing and always evolving in its flavors, styles and origins. We’ve gone from IPAs to White (wheat) IPAs, Czech style pilsners, multiple Shandys and beers brewed with herbs, spices, peels, seeds etc. Just when you think you know what’s going on, everything has changed again. Sure, it’s a little scary, but there’s a sure-fire way to find the beers you want and enjoy:
TRY THEM!!! Stores like the Liquor Locker and other local businesses do weekly beer tastings. Who passes up the chance to try a beer they’ve never had? No one in their right mind, that’s who. Also, many liquor stores and grocers allow you to purchase single crafts rather than a whole six-er, so you can figure out what you and others like without having to drop a twenty on something you hate after one sip. Take advantage of these opportunities, and you can make educated decisions without wasting your kid’s college fund. Ok, so how and what to pair? A basic rule of thumb when pairing any food to sprits, wine, or in this case, a tasty brew: light flavors go with light flavors, big and bold goes with big and bold. So, I’ll give you some basic ideas, and you can take the rest on yourself. We shall go by courses. Salads and appetizers, especially in the warmer months, are generally light, somewhat acidic and full of flavor. Shrimp Scampi is a mainstay year round, great for summer evenings, as well as cold winter nights. Scampis are simple and light but give tons of flavor from their garlic, wine and lemon juice. To pair, we need something like Boulevard Wheat, a crisp wheat beer with a little citrus. The citrus will complement the white wine and lemon, while the wheat packs enough punch to cut through the garlic. Bell’s Oberon would also be a nice choice with its pungent wheat and mild, fruity aromas. Now let’s consider a summer classic: the Cobb Salad. Cobbs are chopped full of greens, bacon, avocado, bleu cheese and tomatoes and usually topped with a simple vinaigrette. With a salad full of acid from the dressing and ‘maters and a little funky from the cheese and savory from the bacon, you need a beer that’s light but yet doesn’t fall short on flavor. Great time for a Leinenkugel Grapefruit Shandy; this shandy provides plenty of citrus from the grapefruit to balance the bleu cheese while being light enough to not take over the bacon. Plus, it’s still acidic enough to blend with the tomatoes and vinaigrette. And if you are fortunate enough to find a Three Floyds Gumballhead, its wheat bite, citrus grapefruit tones and clean finish are a perfect pairing for many summer salads. How about main courses? If you’re like me, grilling a nice steak
is a pleasure any time of the year but especially during the summer. Perhaps you like to match it up with a cheesy macaroni gratin and some sautéed green beans. Founders All Day IPA is a session brew with enough hop forward taste to stand up to the char of the beef, but it finishes light so as not to overtake subtle cheeses or veggies. Another great pairing would be Victory’s Prima Pils; a smooth, clean pilsner that hits strong with hop notes but finishes crisp without linger. Maybe some sticky BBQ is in your foreseeable future, graced with its sweet, smoky, succulent goodness. You’re going to need a brew that complements the smoke and can cut through the sweet. Red ales and ambers can do just that with their roasted malts providing natural sweetness to combat the BBQ’s sugars, while adding complexity enough to stand up to the smoke. Tin Man’s Rivet Red and Carson’s Red Dawn both provide these characteristics and keep you shopping local to boot. For you dessert lovers out there, what could be better than a rich, thick, chocolaty milk shake with Left Hand’s Nitro Milk Stout? With a little chocolate ice cream, a bottle of the stout and a blender, you may think heaven came to you. The bottom line is: TRUST YOUR PALATE! The seasons of life are much too short to worry about whether you’ve paired the perfect brew to your late evening pasta party. Eat and drink what you enjoy and let others do the same. Good times aren’t about the food or beverages, they are about the people you spend them with, so relax and enjoy. – Jason Watson

Tyler Nicely is an up and coming racer from Owensboro. Just 18, he began racing at the age of 12 in Go-Karts and after just a little over a year, moved to a limited modified. Nicely has raced an average of 60 nights over the past three years in 10 different states from Pennsylvania to Florida (home to his favorite track, Volusia Speedway Park in Barbourville). In 2014, he captured some of the biggest wins of his career, racking up over $15,000 in just three races! All total, Nicely has 25 career feature wins – 10 in 2014 alone. Catch the #25 at a track in the area during 2015. OW!! After all these years and here I am back in good ol’ News 4u! It is an honor to be asked once again to keep the community up to speed with all things racing. During the next few months I’ll be providing you with information and news from area race tracks and/or racers. I hope you enjoy the column and look forward to seeing you at one of our local tracks this season. Now, let’s touch base on the area tracks that will be open for sure this season beginning with Chandler Motor Speedway in Chandler, Ind. Kevin Bayer has been busting his tail at the speedway over the winter making massive improvements to the racing surface and facility. Make sure to “Like” Chandler Motor Speedway on Facebook and follow along with their updated schedule and improvements. Kevin and his crew have some big shows planned for the racers and fans this season! The “Class Track” Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind. will host 12 unforgettable events featuring mainly non-wing sprint cars and UMP Modifieds on the high-banked 1/4 mile track. The annual visit from
the World of Outlaw winged sprints is on the list of MUST SEE events along with the UMP Summer Nationals for the super late models. Tommy, Loris, Blake and the entire Tri-State Speedway family do an amazing job at their facility. They produce a track surface second to none, a family friendly environment and exciting side by side, wheel to wheel racing no matter what the division. Now, on to the Bluegrass State… Kentucky Motor Speedway in Whitesville, Ky. will mix it up this season with a few Saturday night shows as well as their famous Sunday races. The 3/8 mile asphalt track is the ONLY asphalt track in the state that runs a weekly program. The CRA Street Stocks Triple Crown event will make a return for 2015 along with the Kentucky Asphalt Championship plus ARCA Trucks and many other special events. Be sure to check out the track that has produced so many of the area’s NASCAR drivers and crew members. Western Kentucky Speedway in Nebo, Ky. will kick off another season this month under the leadership of Mark French and family. Mark’s 3/8 mile dirt track has seen some additions such as a go kart track in the infield. The karts will be racing on select nights and in 2014, saw some great success. The return of the America Modified Series seems to be a given for the season plus many other specials for the weekly divisions. Cedar Ridge Speedway located in Morgantown, Ky. is also a 3/8 mile dirt track with a unique design. The track is built in what I call a “valley” and you view the races from a hillside. It has seen visits from the American Modified Series, UMP Crate Late Models and many more traveling series. Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City, Ky. was re-opened last season after sitting idle for several years. Hopkinsville businessmen, Ronnie Jones and Jim Hale invested their time and money to open Cont. on page 72 Call for Advertising Information (812) 426-6398 • April 2015

Cont. from page 71 the 3/8 mile dirt track located just five minutes from Kentucky Lake. Boasting some of the highest purses available for weekly classes, the track looks set for a great 2015 season, and the KLMS crew will have a special event nearly every weekend. Paducah International Raceway was saved by the Mason family last season. Working hard on promoting the track, they were able to complete their season and start fresh for 2015. This track is rich in racing history that dates back to the 60s. Annual events that many have on their must see list are the UMP Summer Nationals and the Lucas Oil Late Model Series visit. These two events see teams and fans travel thousands of miles and they get their money’s worth every time! Beacon Dragway located in Benton, Ky. will again be open for those who want to get their NHRA weekly drag racing fix. The track is located just across the road from Paducah International Raceway and is a former airport. This track has seen massive support since opening and they continue to add special events to their schedule. They have hosted Jet car races, the Division 3 NHRA Jeg’s Super Quick Series and many other special events. Beech Bend Raceway Park located in Bowling Green, Ky. will also be holding their weekly drag races on their famous 1/4 mile strip. BBRP is known for their remarkable facility that not only has a race track and camp grounds but an amusement and water park. How freaking cool is that? BBRP has several National events during each season which includes the NHRA Sportnationals, NHRA Super Quick, Hot Rod Racers Reunion, Harley Drags and so much more. Now, that’s our list of area tracks in a nutshell. If you are a diehard race fan and want weekly updates on results, upcoming events and to hear some of your favorite drivers after their weekend racing, tune in to my weekly radio show, Regional Motorsports Power Hour. The show is broadcast LIVE every Tuesday night from April-October on 102.7 The Game and simulcasts on 94.7 WBIO in the Owensboro area. You can also tune in by downloading the iGO Radio app for your apple or android devices, then search for 102.7 the Game. Not ready to download the app? Head on over to owensbororadio.com and click on either of the stations, then the “Listen Live” tab. Until next month, always remember... Smash the Throttle and your mind will follow! Peace! localtalent talent Rachael Goldman
aking people laugh may look easy, but any comic will tell you that there’s an awful lot of pain involved. Surely, it’s no coincidence that bombing on stage is often referred to as “dying.” No wonder then that it takes a person with more than just a sharp wit and commanding stage presence to succeed in the business – it also takes guts (and a few drinks don’t hurt, either). Locally, the number of comics with the right stuff is on the rise as evidenced by the popularity of comedy nights at places like Bokeh Lounge where Rachael Goldman (of Goldman’s Pawn Shop in downtown Evansville) told her very first joke just one year ago. “I had no interest in doing stand-up,” she recalls. “The only reason that I started is because Mike Millard (Bokeh Lounge owner) asked me to host his open mic which I’d been attending as a customer.” Adamantly opposed to the idea, Goldman eventually caved after four bourbons. Just 30 days later, she performed her first set. “It went ok – nobody threw anything,” she says. “My goal was just to not totally embarrass myself. But people laughed – it was shocking.”
M
As the weeks went by, Goldman – who describes herself as “cocktail party funny” – continued to hone her “off-thecuff” comments, slowly shaping the material into jokes that landed more often than not. She also continued to host Comedy Night (nine in all so far) and make some very important connections. “From Bokeh Lounge, I met Big John Richardson who is a comedian from Louisville,” Goldman explains. “Thanks

to him I got a spot that takes place once a week on Thursdays at Impellizzeri’s Pizza and a spot at open mic every Wednesday at a comedy club there called the Laughing Derby.” A (short) career highlight took place at the latter when she warmed up the crowd
for nationally known comedian Brian Posehn. With more high profile experiences under her belt, Goldman has been able to expand her comedic horizons, scheduling recent appearances in Indianapolis, Dayton and

Chicago. In fact, she’ll be back in the Windy City for a show at the Wip Theater on April 25 – her first feature set. “20 minutes – that’s a lot of time…and crickets,” Goldman laughs. Chances are she’ll do great, especially considering that the week before she’ll open for yet another successful comedian, Stewart Huff, at the Historic State Theater in Elizabethtown, Ky. It’s often said that it takes at least 10 years to master the craft of comedy, but Goldman is certainly on her way, gaining invaluable experience on stage and continuing to draw from her personal life. “Working at Goldman’s is kind of a good training in comedy,” she explains. “I come from a very funny family. Every night at the dinner table was good practice.” Locally, look out for Goldman at the next Bokeh Lounge Comedy Night on April 30 (8:30 p.m., $3). And there should be more opportunities to catch her act in town to come. Despite making great strides and getting increased attention, Goldman’s motivation is not to leave Evansville and join the comedy circuit but to simply improve. “In a million years I never thought I was going to try this, but now it’s one of the first things that I’ve tried in my life where I really want to get better. I don’t really want to do this professionally. I just want to be as funny as humanly possible.” – TE Follow Rachael Goldman on Facebook and on Twitter @rachaelgoldman.
Left to right: Grayson Adams- sax and bass, Lauren Terry- vocal, accordian and ukulele, Benjamin Jenkins- vocals, guitar and banjo, Thomas Dupont- vocals, guitar and banjo
There’s a lot to be said for the confidence of youth and Benjamin Jenkins, lead singer for local folk group The Commoners, has got it in spades. The 18-year-old Castle High School senior is obsessively goal-oriented, perhaps to a fault. But nothing will stop him from achieving his dream of traveling the world playing the music he loves. It’s that singular focus which accounts for the incredible musical strides he has made in just two years, having literally started from scratch. “At the beginning of my sophomore year, I started playing with my now partner-incrime, Thomas Dupont, who had just moved from Louisiana,” Jenkins explains. “We knew nothing. I pushed notes on a keyboard and hoped for the best. It was really a tragedy (laughs).” The turning point for Jenkins came when, of all things, he got suspended from school. He spent his unexpected free time shopping for a ukulele. “That’s what really got me into music, and I learned my first song, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” he explains. Next, he acquired an electric guitar on loan and formed a Christian rock band (Life Left Behind) with Dupont. The results were
slightly less tragic. “Nobody knew we existed, but I started to learn what it’s like to be the head of a band which has ultimately become my life,” Jenkins says. He also learned how to write songs, adapting a “no covers” policy that continues to this day. Post LLB, Jenkins began making the rounds as a solo artist. Slowly, but surely, word got out about a young kid with a golden voice who played various stringed instruments. He secured repeat bookings at places like Greek’s Pizzeria, eventually inviting Dupont back into the fold. “We hadn’t played with each other for some time, but he’s my best friend by a long shot,” Jenkins says. “We never had to practice, because we just click musically.” The renewed partnership stoked the creative fire, and the songs flowed – catchier, more mature tunes that drew immediate attention. After a potential signing with a Kentucky-based label turned into a comedy of errors, Jenkins and Dupont independently recorded Breaking the Cage (mixed and mastered in Jenkins’ bedroom, no less). Featuring beautiful, delicate tracks like “Matches” and “Little Bird,” the EP made a real connection with fans. “My music is so
soundboard
personal to me, and you can tell by the things I say. I think that’s why people like it,” Jenkins says. Itching to fill out the sound that he and vocalist/guitarist Dupont achieved on Breaking the Cage, Jenkins brought in frequent collaborator Grayson Adams on bass and sax and newbie Lauren Terry on vocals, accordion and ukulele. Dubbed The Commoners, the quartet crystallized last November. “It was really natural the first time we got together – this is what music sounds like,” Jenkins says. “I finally found a band that is exactly what I know will succeed in music.” Apparently, he isn’t alone in his assessment. The Commoners are currently fielding offers from numerous tri-state labels on the heels of performances on UE radio, Live Local 7 and the Really Big Show. An EP is in the works and a full album (to be recorded by local ace engineer Scott Brown at Ashbrook Studios) should arrive by late summer or early fall. Naturally, Jenkins has even bigger plans. ”We are pursuing music on a global level. I said to my band ‘commit to this with everything you’ve got, and I promise it will be the craziest, most epic ride of your life.’” – TE

Red Hook Apple
Lagunitas Pilsner
Sierra Nevada Hoppy Lager
Daniel Knight • 2.5 Red hook has a long history of making respectable ales. This one deviates from the norm as it’s a fruit/vegetable ale. It pours up a clear, light yellow straw color with a very brief one finger head and carbonation that sparkles at first but dissipates pretty quickly as well. The smell is subtle, somewhat bready, and if I didn’t know it was an apple ale, I probably wouldn’t have noticed that faint flavor in there. Otherwise, I find the flavor follows the smell and although it’s not bad, it doesn’t call me back for more.
Daniel Knight • 3.5 This one pours up a crystal clear, golden yellow color with loads of airy white head that settles to a white ring and actually leaves a little lacing as it goes. Smell is grassy with sweet bready malts and honey. The flavor follows along pretty much perfectly with a mild hop bitterness in the aftertaste. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp and smooth mouthfeel. As one who admittedly isn’t a big fan of pilsners, I find this one pleasantly drinkable.
Daniel Knight • 3.75 Here’s a twist… Hoppy Lager (specifically pilsner). It pours an inviting dark honey color with a hearty two finger head that slowly settles leaving lace as it goes. The aroma is subdued with hints of spicy hops and some malts. The flavor is not subdued as far as hops are concerned, at least. The overall taste experience is lacking a bit, though. Frankly, I think it’s because it’s a hoppy lager anyway you cut it.
Paul Bragin • 3 A thin white head forms on this beer and disappears quickly, leaving a very pale golden ale behind. The scent of apples dominates the nose. The taste contains more apple flavor, but otherwise tastes like most mass produced lagers. It might pair well with apple desserts or possibly be used to cook apple desserts. It might also work well as a refreshing treat after working outdoors during the summer. Other than that, look for something else. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a clear amber beer, and I was expecting the hard apple cider flavor that everyone seems to be jumping on board with. I would consider this more of a wheat-flavored beer with a hint of apple, but I was glad it was something unexpected. The apple flavor was present but not very strong and complemented this beer.

Paul Bragin • 4 A thick white head tops this pale golden beer. The scent contains a nice balance of malt and hops. Hop notes on the tongue first come when tasting the beer, followed by more of the malt notes in the aftertaste. This beer tastes the way a proper pilsner should. Pair it with appetizers like brie cheese, Serrano ham and sliced apples, or other lighter cheeses like mild cheddar. Jabez Martinez • 3.5 This is a clear amber colored beer looking a shade darker than a Bud. It did have a light sweetness brought on by the hops but no overpowering flavors. I would consider this an average pilsner. I have never heard of them but a little better than average.
Paul Bragin • 4.5 A thick white head crowns this amber beer. A mixture of pine and citrus notes from the generous amounts of hops used fills the nose when smelling the beer. The hop flavors continue when drinking the beer, followed by a hint of malt, with the citrus notes coming through again in the finish. This is a limited edition beer, so hop lovers will definitely want to pick up this one before it’s gone. Jabez Martinez • 3
This was another clear amber beer, and I could taste the sweet hops flavor. It had the average IPA flavor that numbed your tongue so I couldn’t really taste anything else. I love other Sierra Nevada beers but this one was just average and a little disappointing coming from this brewery.

Dogfish Head IPA
Daniel Knight • 3.5 One never knows what this brewery will create next. Sixty-One marries their famous 60 minute IPA with syrah grape must to produce an IPA/wine hybrid. It pours up a dark amber color with an airy, faintly purple/pink head that recedes promptly. Smell is of malt, subtle citrus, and some subdued grape and wine aromas. Like the smell, the taste has subtle musty flavors of red grapes along with some hints of sweetness yet a slight amount of hoppy bitterness at the finish. A must try.
Paul Bragin • 4.25 A thin white head that evaporates almost immediately tops this beer. What’s left behind is a beer that seems to have pink undertones from the grapes used in the brewing process. Fruity notes from the grapes highlight the scent profile, with hop notes also present. The first taste highlights the beer flavors with some wine flavors from the grapes in the finish. Pair this one with pork or cheeses like gruyere or young Gouda. Jabez Martinez • 4 This is a semi-cloudy amber colored beer. Though it’s an IPA, it’s a little on the light side, which I liked. I noticed it has a 6.5 ABV. It says it was brewed with Syrah grape must, so it was supposed to have a wine flavor. I really didn’t taste any wine, but I did think it was pretty good.

As a kid, my mom would have me repeat the mantra “sticks and stones...” when I would get my feelings hurt. Did it make me feel better? A little bit. Pushing 30, do I still let what others say affect me? Of course. We try not to, because in all reality, what others say in a hurtful manner is merely a projection of their own insecurities, but sometimes that’s difficult to remember. Specifically, let’s talk about slurs. You know what they are. I don’t need to list them. What I encounter the most, often daily, are slurs used for members of the LGBT community. If you’re guilty, raise your hand. Nah, just keep reading. Like I said, as adults, even though we may still be sensitive to others’ words, we are much less susceptible than children. To me, this is where the issue lies. I’m a big girl- I can take it. Some 12 year-old-boy, however, who’s standing in line with his dad at the grocery wondering what’s going to happen if he comes out to his family, may not be so immune to your words. LGBT youths are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers, and those suicides occur daily across the globe due to harassment and fear of rejection. experiencing. Be kind- you have no idea what someone else may be battling. In short, if you want to call your friend an a-hole because they’re being one, do it. Award-winning TV special recorded live at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in 2012. Housebound (NR) The Netflix horror game is often a crapshoot, but every once in a while there’s a gem amidst the rubble, and it’s usually foreign. Enter Housebound, the SXSW comedy/ horror film from New Zealand’s Gerard Johnstone. After attempting to rob an ATM, misanthropic misfit Kylie (Morgana O’Reilly) is sentenced to eight months of house arrest and forced to serve her sentence in her childhood home. Less than pleased to be sharing quarters with her paranormally paranoid motormouth mother (Rima Te Wiata) and stepfather (Ross Harper), who she describes as a “cabbage in a polar fleece,” Kylie quickly gets bored with beer, smoking, and daytime television. After experiencing a few bumps in the night, she begins to wonder whether there is some merit to her mother’s ghostly views. When researching the history of their home, Kylie finds that it was never a bed and breakfast but rather a halfway house for violent teens and the site of a gruesome murder. Hell-bent on getting out of the house, she enlists the help of Amos (GlenPaul Waru), the bumbling security guard in charge of her house-arrest ankle bracelet, who also moonlights as an amateur ghost-hunter. The two become an unlikely team, and history belonging to both Kylie’s family and the house itself begins to unravel, leading to a silly turn of events saved by humanity, dry humor, gore, and excellent acting.
Big Hero 6 (PG) Walt Disney Pictures Without a doubt, Big Hero 6 is the best “family” movie of the year (I’m an adult with no children and would gladly watch it at least 100 more times). It is the first Disney film with 3D animation to feature Marvel Comics characters, and an Academy Award/ Golden Globe winner. The story follows Hiro Hamada (voiced by Ryan Potter), a “botfighter” whose robotics genius is wasted on illegal betting in futuristic “San Fransokyo.” With encouragement from his older brother, Tadashi, Hiro visits an elite robotics school where he forms friendships with Tadashi’s classmates and meets Baymax (Scott Adsit), a healthcare robot designed by Tadashi, and ultimately decides to channel his talents into his education. For entrance into the school, Hiro creates microbots: swarms of tiny robots that link together and can be controlled by his mind. His invention attracts the attention of a less-than-trustworthy corporation and is believed to be destroyed after a fire breaks out in the school, killing Tadashi and his professor. When a masked villain appears using his robotics technology, Hiro enlists the help of his friends, and Baymax comes to Hiro’s rescue in more ways than one. An action packed film with state-of-the-art animation, Big Hero 6 is also a heartwarming lesson in grief, friendship, non-violence, and forgiveness. – Whitney Patterson

Jenny's Bay Hair Day When Jon Kern, Steve Tyner and William Lendrum created Jenny’s Bad Hair Day (JBHD) in late December, none of these musicians thought it would be more than a side project. However, JBHD has become a coveted cover band in the tri-state. With styles ranging from rock to funk to jazz, JBHD provides a show for every age, gender, and taste. Their ever-growing set list includes Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” “Ramble on” by Led Zeppelin, and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” “We want people to have a unique experience at every show,” explains Steve Tyner, lead vocalist and guitarist. When asked what artists influence their unique style, JBHD doesn’t initially mention historic musicians or even underground national bands. They credit local artists like Katie Watts, Andy Jones, and others in the Evansville area for inspiring them to create their own style. With the support of these local artists both during gigs and online, JBHD has been able to grow quickly and happily into the local music scene. Since January, JBHD has played at TJ’s Stockyard Inn, Lyle’s Sportzone, Greek’s Pizzeria, the Deer Head, Bokeh Lounge, and most recently their first out of town gig at Tequila Sheila’s in Grayville, IL. If interested in the band’s future gigs, search for Jenny’s Bad Hair Day on Facebook to find their schedule through March. The page is littered with personal jibes and posters of their disgruntled mascot Jenny, proudly claiming in the about section: “We’re awful. You won’t like us.” Sorry, Jenny, looks like people like ya. -Katie Miller
cd reviews Richie Kotzen Cannibals Self-Released
From Poison to playing for Mr. Big to opening for the Stones, Richie Kotzen is not a newbie. His chops have long been established with his own recording studio and production company, and on his 20th solo album, Cannibals, Kotzen’s eclectic experience and influences are right there on his sleeve. The album tumbles and weaves from rock to soul to choral 80’s hair band to funk and back to blues. There’s a bit of a late eighties/early nineties B-movie soundtrack feel, with Kotzen’s Axl Rose-meetsMotown vocals, Vaughan Halen (yeah, I went there) signature Fender noodling and occasional George Michael belting. According to Kotzen, “much of the material is comprised from recordings that are as old as 10 years,” which is obvious in the album’s authentic dated feel. A departure from the rest of the tracks, “You” is an absolutely gorgeous piano tune co-written with his daughter, August, and a smooth transition into “Time for the Payment,” the inevitable artist’s career introspection with an almost-awkward hint of Spanish guitar, which is saved by his crooning vocals and inflection. Cannibals is definitely a “leftover day” album from a seasoned artist often on the outskirts, but the leftovers were cool enough not to spoil.
Broken Water
Wrought Night-People Records It must be the stately evergreens poised in the gray mist against the chopping waves, or just a good god-damn gene pool, because Olympia produces some amazing music. Always right ahead or perfectly behind, meeting in the middle somewhere, the sounds of the Puget are just real. Amidst the bearded folk bands, the purposely-worn Vans of chillwave and the ever-redundant radio pop, are these tucked-away bands that are perfectly happy being tucked away, and not in the hipster sense. Broken Water is a bed of grunge nostalgia, fuzzy in more ways than one. Wrought isn’t what you’d hear today; it’s not clean, and it’s not going to sit well with your Swift-loving little sister. I adore it. It’s muddy and sad and reminiscent and apathetic with a hint of a sneer: shoegaze for adults in 2015. Track order is significant for this album, with shared vocals between the three members: Jon on guitar, Kanako on drums and cellist Lori Goldston, who’s also recorded with Nirvana. The flow crests and bottoms out and peaks again, so there’s no room to be bored. Think of a murky conglomeration of Mazzy Star, Blonde Redhead and Sleater-Kinney (yeah, I like SK a lot, get over it). Favorite track: “1984.” Right on.

cd sidebar Brandi Carlile
Sufjan Stevens Carrie & Lowell Asthmatic Kitty
The Firewatcher’s Daughter ATO Records Although she was born and raised in a small town just outside of Seattle, Brandi Carlile’s music often screams Appalachia, at least on The Firewatcher’s Daughter. After the success of The Story back in 2007, she’s been going strong, but on the sly. Less rock-pop than previous releases, this album feels more authentic, circling back to an adolescent Carlile who grew up singing country with her mother. Familiar are the vocals- high with seemingly effortless vibrato, and a clarity that quickly spirals into a profound rawness that is all her own. What is new, however, is the harnessed maturity of her voice. The opening track is old Brandi; “The Eye” is an introduction to the best parts of the album. It’s country from back when country was good- not the pop/hip-hop fusion drivel that has commandeered the radio. It’s June Carter and Bonnie Raitt and the Judds and Tanya Tucker and if the harmonies don’t give you goose bumps, you better check your pulse. The cello and finger picking on “Wilder (We’re Chained)” are absolutely gorgeous. Impressive as well is her Reba-like ability to fit so many lyrics into a song without it sounding rushed; the growling, titular lyrics of “The Stranger at My Door” belong in a smoky Southern juke joint. Carlile’s come out again, but this time as a country queen. Best album of 2015 thus far.
Imagine Dragons
Smoke + Mirrors KIDinaKORNER/ Interscope Records In the midst of struggling to remember which juggernaut single belonged to Imagine Dragons, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that perhaps they would not be a 1.5 hit wonder after all. The Vegas band stormed onto the scene recently with enough ammo to stay in the game for maybe one more round. Although struggling to be cohesive, Smoke + Mirrors has a couple more tunes for the masses, and a few surprisingly good tracks that are for those of us who like music for... well, music. It starts off with “Shots,” an 80’s dance tune with electric riffs, synthed to hell and back, not incredibly unlike MGMT, but more solid somehow. The next track is “Gold,” and it is just that. The percussion is immaculately placed, and although the lyrics aren’t deep or terribly original, the hook makes its point, and the music is just tight (as in timely). The title song is pretty, a sort of 80’s/Coldplay/industrial spawn, and “I’m So Sorry,” is a real-life, actual rock song, which surprised the hell out of me, because let’s be honest... The most popular track on iTunes is “I Bet My Life,” a disappointingly tired Edward Sharpe regurgitation. Best of: “Polaroid.” It’s like panning for gold, but knowing there are at least some ruby chips in the stream. -Whitney Patterson
2010’s The Age of Adz found Stevens at his most experimental, but he has returned to his folk roots with Carrie & Lowell. Arguably his most personal album to date, nearly every song documents Stevens’ childhood trips to see his titular mother and stepfather. All of the songs on the album are good (my favorite is “Eugene”), but the overall tone of the album is a little stagnate. Carrie & Lowell is just fine for fans like me, but others may find the soft, quiet songs repetitive and monotonous.
Modest Mouse Strangers to Ourselves Epic I’ve waited eight years for this and though Modest Mouse’s new album Strangers to Ourselves is only “okay,” I’m not disappointed because I didn’t have my expectations high. That being said, it isn’t bad by any means. It is a very lengthy album, so there is plenty of material to sift through and figure out which tracks are best. But because the album is simply average, the lengthy listening experience becomes quite tedious. There are lots of good songs though, so give the album a chance if you’re a Modest Mouse fan.
The The Soundtrack to Hyena Matt Johnson hasn’t released a proper The The album in 15 years (a new recording is at long last in the developing stages), but he’s kept busy producing wonderfully moody music through Cineola, the independent film soundtrack company that he formed in 2005. The third in the series, Hyena perfectly captures the grit and grime of the crime world with a slow-paced, haunting collection of instrumentals that, like Johnson’s two previous soundtracks, works with or without the visuals.
Chuck Sanders Daydream Sundae Killer Robot Chuck Sanders’ single “Daydream Sundae” is a fun trip down memory lane that evokes Peter Pan fantasies in its listeners. If you need to escape from your boring job for four minutes, take a bite out of this “Daydream Sundae” and taste the nostalgia of your childhood dreams. -Russell Finn
